We were wandering the downtown area and admiring all of the new businesses popping up and bringing life to this area and being it was Sunday, several restaurants were closed. We came to Family Cafe and my buddy mentioned that him and his family come here quite often. And yes, they did recognize him when we went in.
Family Cafe is a small Iraqi restaurant that serves coffee, tea, smoothies, breakfast, lunch and dinner items. My friend typically comes here for breakfast and an item called the Beef Mix. We opted for a light lunch and some of their wonderful pastries.
The spot itself is tiny with maybe five? two tops, but they just constructed a shelter outside for spring and summer seating. Everywhere you look there are signs of middle eastern culture, including many items for sale like necklaces, teapots, mugs, and hamsas (a small symbol that is a hand with an eye within it in middle eastern and Israeli culture).
As for the food and drink? I had a milk tea which was quite pleasant with a strong touch of cardamom and my buddy had Turkish coffee. We each got a wrap, one beef and one lamb that are each cut into four pieces, so we swapped two so we could try both. The beef was seasoned with Iraqi spices (per the menu) with cheese and veggies and the lamb was gyro lamb strips. Both came with a very flavorful dipping sauce.
We had to get some pistachio baklava (they also have a walnut version) and that was flaky and sweet and nutty. There were a few other dessert and pastry options too including some savory ones that looked tasty.
Overall a great experience and I'd like to go back for more. Very friendly family and I got the impression that Family Cafe has been here for quite some time.
Enjoy and as always, support our local businesses!
