The Best Halal Food in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Just a stone’s throw from Rehana, diners will find another Iraqi-owned halal delight in the aptly named Family Cafe. Here find a selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items that transcend cultures from items like mushroom omelets and pancakes to more unexpected combinations like eggs with figs sampled during a recent visit. The menu is rounded out with a selection of sweets including baklava and halawa, as well as Iraqi tea and strong Turkish coffee." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Best Dishes Eater Portland Ate in January, 2025 | Eater Portland

"Owned by a family hailing from Iraq, it describes itself as an American and Arabic restaurant, serving Turkish coffees and Iraqi tea alongside smoothies and an egg-heavy menu. Erin DeJesus, Executive Editor, writes: "The recent meal I can’t stop thinking about was also maybe my simplest. On a clouded weekend morning (emotionally, if not literally), I stopped in for breakfast. I ordered something I’ve never seen before — eggs cooked with figs — and the sweet round of omelet that emerged was delightfully unexpected (add the housemade hot sauce for a sharp acid contrast, mop it all up with warm pita). Paired with the chicken sausage, mushroom, and tomato pastry — which tasted like the best version of a Hot Pocket that one could imagine, I mean this as a true compliment — it was the exact kind of experience that brought a moment of cheer to a grey day." - Brenna Houck

Yeah, this place is outrageously good. Haven’t had Turkish-style coffee for years and it’s excellent. The lamb and eggs are off the charts good, the dates and eggs were a fantastic surprise I’d never had before. The halawa is awesome too, literally didn’t put a foot wrong the entire time 😋

A lovely and quaint spot right here in Beaverton. The food is great and very reasonably priced. The family who runs this spot are so nice, too. You can tell that everything here is made with love for their culture and we are grateful to be able to experience it. We will definitely be coming back and are so thankful to have such a standout local option 💐

Google
This is Arabic island in Beaverton. We were for breakfast. Food is tasty with unique flavor. Turkish coffee was so tart for me, but tea was perfect. I really liked pastries there. The price is also reasonable

Google
A wonderful Mediterranean restaurant. Fabulous, friendly service. Interesting and delicious dishes. I had the lamb and eggs which looked small, but salad came first with white coffee (very sweet, very delicious). So the lamb and eggs were just the right amount. So yummy! Inside the shop was a small boutique of jewelry and coffee-making paraphernalia from the Middle East. Beautiful displays. I bought a cute and casual necklace for five dollars. And another white coffee! We ate outside in a delightfully built shelter. So decorative, so nice. I will definitely be going back!

Google
You have to try this place. Some of the most flavorful eggs I've ever had. The Turkish coffee is a great way to get your mornings started as well.

Google
It was absolutely divine. The Turkish Coffee and Iraqi tea were enjoyed immensely by my companion and myself, and we both greatly enjoyed the Eggs with Chicken Sausage. The baklava is killer as well. Everything was fresh and delicious, affordable and delightful. The service was lovely and hassle-free; they anticipate needs and wants and make special note and care of dietary restrictions. We will be back soon!

Google
I saw reviews saying the lamb dish was delicious, so I decided to try it. It was delicious, make me finished all. The milk tea was also very interesting I am first time having mike tea like that, and it is $3.50, you get refills. The owner was very friendly, and I'll definitely be back to try their other lamb dishes.

Google
If I lived close this would be my weekly treat. Great people, great food. Had the "lamb dish". Sooo good. Turkish coffee and a cheese filled bakery item. Everything delicious! 💥🙌🏻😋

Yelp
What a hidden gem! My wife found this place on Yelp during our current trip, walking distance to our hotel in Beaverton. We shared the lamb shank, which was so tender and flavorful. We also had the Turkish coffee which was delightful. Lastly, we shared a baklava and it was wonderful. The service was excellent and friendly. We sat outside in covered seating and it was perfect. Five star rating is well deserved! Highly recommended!

Yelp
We sat outside for about 25 minutes give or take before we even got water or menus had to go inside and ask for menus. So the management offered up a free salad and then offered up my parents a salad to split for free due to some understanding of the fact that their customer service at that point was not at a high level. How about you do thing correctly and you won't have to give away free things that is the indication that there is a failure in Food and or Service
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
People were so sweet and service was great. We sat outside and they have wind screens all the way around. As for the food...well...it might literally be the best food I've had. Not just Mediterranean. I had the lamb dish, and the meat was so soft I thought it was going to melt on my tongue. Rice is rice, right? No. I'm the person who eats the rice sometimes. I usually just eat around it for the most part. I ate every single bite. I will be back. Probably far too often.

Yelp
We had an amazing breakfast here!! The owners were lovely and made us feel right at home. Adorable intimate space inside. Plenty of covered seating out in front. We loved the flavors of the middle eastern dishes. Definitely coming back soon to try the lunch menu.

Yelp
Plan some time for your meal. The taste is so worth it. We ordered the omelet and the beef dish. I am a huge fan of vegetables at every meal so the side salad was spot on. Homemade bread to accompany the beef dish. So good. The spices used are generous and delicious. A few tables inside, most of the seating is outside. Looking forward to going again!

Yelp
First let me say this family owned restaurant/lounge is the hidden gem! We had the pleasure of having Leslie, daughter of the owners, and her sister's daughter-in-law serve us. (This is a family owned, family run place.) Both ladies were so sweet! And mom was working too!!! Okay, on to breakfast. Coffee was good black. No bitterness. Cinnamon roll was not too sweet so easy to eat as a side. Eggs were cooked to order and done perfectly. Country potatoes were seasoned just right. Biscuit was soft and not dried out. Hubby said the side is gravy was really good! Sausage was tasty. We could not eat it all so took over fifty percent home for lunch. Like I said, this is a hidden gem that you would not expect breakfast from. And service is top notched! So glad we stopped in! We'll be back.

Yelp
Amazing yummy food, cute little space with nice owners and great service. Nice family owned restaurant.

Yelp
A small family-run business with some great food! I had the Fava Beans dish and it was delicious and filling, and the bread at the bottom soaked up the sauce quite nicely. This was my first time having a Turkish coffee. It had a fruitier taste than I usually go for but I still enjoyed it. Overall a great place that I will be visiting again.

Yelp
This is a cute little cafe a friend and I stumbled upon in Beaverton. The aesthetic is stunning and the service was amazing! The woman at the cash register was sweet and the food came out fast. I had the Baklava and Iraqi chai and it was amazing! Definitely worth the visit

Yelp
Great service and food, we ordered the beef dish and it was delicious, the meat was so tender and flavorful . The outdoor covered seating area is so cozy

Yelp
We were wandering the downtown area and admiring all of the new businesses popping up and bringing life to this area and being it was Sunday, several restaurants were closed. We came to Family Cafe and my buddy mentioned that him and his family come here quite often. And yes, they did recognize him when we went in. Family Cafe is a small Iraqi restaurant that serves coffee, tea, smoothies, breakfast, lunch and dinner items. My friend typically comes here for breakfast and an item called the Beef Mix. We opted for a light lunch and some of their wonderful pastries. The spot itself is tiny with maybe five? two tops, but they just constructed a shelter outside for spring and summer seating. Everywhere you look there are signs of middle eastern culture, including many items for sale like necklaces, teapots, mugs, and hamsas (a small symbol that is a hand with an eye within it in middle eastern and Israeli culture). As for the food and drink? I had a milk tea which was quite pleasant with a strong touch of cardamom and my buddy had Turkish coffee. We each got a wrap, one beef and one lamb that are each cut into four pieces, so we swapped two so we could try both. The beef was seasoned with Iraqi spices (per the menu) with cheese and veggies and the lamb was gyro lamb strips. Both came with a very flavorful dipping sauce. We had to get some pistachio baklava (they also have a walnut version) and that was flaky and sweet and nutty. There were a few other dessert and pastry options too including some savory ones that looked tasty. Overall a great experience and I'd like to go back for more. Very friendly family and I got the impression that Family Cafe has been here for quite some time. Enjoy and as always, support our local businesses!

Yelp
Family Cafe is a tiny shop in central Beaverton. They offer American as well as Arabic food. I ordered a light lunch of delicious baklava, and large portion of fruit salad, and a Turkish coffee. The coffee was such a treat, great flavor. Even though I usually add milk to my coffee, this did not need it. And a lovely presentation - I should get similarly intricate serving ware for home so I can delight in the ritual of drinking coffee even more! Would love to come back for a larger savory meal. It's truly a family run business, and the family is from Bagdad. They are really sweet people, you can tell when you interact with them behind the counter or when they bring your food. Their website says they want customers to feel like they're part of their family. Just a few tables inside (four I think) so seating is limited and there isn't much standing room either. Looks like they have some outdoor seating in nicer weather. They've got a small area with cute merch for sale too. They operate Thursday through Monday, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Yelp
Year Update Review! I'm very happy to write that everything here is just as exceptional as it was the first time we visited, and now they have their very own homemade hot sauce which has earned a dedicated spot in our fridge! The stuff is awesome on anything and everything. The staff are still probably the nicest people in the neighborhood, providing excellent and attentive service, but more than that, really making us feel like family every time we stop by. Plus, they now have a really nice outdoor dining area that's charming and matches the vibe inside. I really can't say enough nice things about this cafe, it is truly exceptional.

Yelp
This review is going to echo what many other folks have said. The family that owns and runs the cafe are so warm, you feel like you're eating at a friend's house. The Turkish coffee is perfect - strong, richly flavored with cardamom, and served in a charming set. The lamb and eggs consists of three beaten eggs baked with strips of shawarma and seasoned with za'atar, a side salad with a sweet/savory dressing, and fresh samoon (flatbread). Flat out delicious.

Yelp
Once you overcome the challenging parking then you're in for a treat. The service was top notch friendly and attentive. Seating in a cute and cozy interior is very limited. Iraqi tea was satisfying, they refilled it once. The veggie plate was good, a bit light on spice, but worthy nevertheless. Cheese pastry, halawa, and baklava are all future reorders. Oh, and the dessert that looks like a caramel layered parfait, ya get that. Almost every customer that frequented during my visit was Middle Eastern: a good thing. And many ordered juice smoothies so they must know something. One guy brought his own dates and snacks so it's a place where we people come to socialize. The owners are the type you root for.

Yelp
Such friendly service and flavorful, authentic Iraqi dishes! Seating is cozy and warm either inside our outside. Our family have become big fans.

Yelp
Food: Delicious. Service: Extremely friendly. Ambiance: Coziest place I've ever been. I was so happy the first time I went, I spent a bunch of time planning what I would eat at my next trip there. Serves easily the best cup of tea I've ever had.

Yelp
A true hidden gem. My family and I loved the food, the service and the ambiance. We went two days straight while we were in town visiting from California. The food was delicious. I just ordered what they recommended and everything was fantastic! Worth going out of way just to eat here. To top things off, the owners make you feel welcome. 5 star reviews fall short, you'll have to try it for yourself.

Yelp
Small business running a cozy and unique cafe. You can see how they prepared your order. Servers are friendly and cheerful. Good milk tea and Nescafé! We enjoyed the food too.

Yelp
This place is amazing! From service to food everything was great. Nice big serving sizes everything tasted great! Nice little place with inviting aroma of spices, small quaint tables inside. Definitely will return!

Yelp
True to its name, Family Cafe is completely run by an Iraqi couple. Their store is small but cozy. There are a couple tables inside and benches outside. The couple takes turn cooking and waiting so please be patient. You can definitely guarantee to get the freshest of dishes. We got the Lamb Shank dish and Mortadella and Egg to split. Both came with a plate of salad that was full of spices. The Lamb Shank dish was a spectacle when they pour boiling butter on top of their succulent lamb shank, making the dish sizzle. The dish came with lots of herby rice full of chickpeas and almond as well. You also get a side of consume to pour on top of your rice and lamb for extra flavors. This was an amazing dish. It's the pricest option on their menu but well worth it! The Egg was unique. It reminded me of Khai Jiew, a omlette dish in Thailand. Super well-salted. The Chicken Mortadella worked great with the eggs. The dish came with a side of fresh bread, a perfect pairing. We ended the meal with some Turkish Coffee and Pistachio Baklava. Let me tell you that I absolutely loved their baklava! I've never had one that was so full of pistachios and not completely droused in syrup so the phyllo pastry was still flaky and crisp. I much prefer this variation -- would totally just buy a box of their baklava. The coffee was nice and floral, very unique Couldn't be happier with the meal. A great spot to come take your time and enjoy good food and treats.

Yelp
Loved it here!! The vibes are immaculate. Cozy spot without feeling cramped at all given the decorations and the wide windowsill seating. The owners were so welcoming, and it truly did feel like a family's living room cafe. The food was good! The bread was pillowy, soft and nicely flavored, and the dipping sauce was addicting. The lotus cup was a little sweet for me but still delicious and it brightened my day. Can't wait to come back and read by the window with a cup of tea :)

Dan

Yelp
Stopped here with my kiddos.. we all loved our food, the Iraqi tea was amazing. Such kind people, too. Very refreshing. Thank you, we'll be back =)

Yelp
Numnumnumnumnummmmm What? I can't post a review with numnum sounds? Fine! Here is the review in English! I have passed by this little restaurant many times and always wanted to give it a try. Today I got some extra time for my car service, so I finally took the plunge! When I entered the shop, the owner acknowledged and seated me right away. I told him it was my first time and had no clue what to order. He then went thru the menu patiently and explained what everything was. Then my eyes traveled to one of the other tables and saw the lamb shank platter. Right then I knew that's what I wanted. On top of the lamb shank dish, I also ordered a Turkish coffee as well. The owner ask if I'd like to watch him making the Turkish coffee, and of course I say yesss! He then brew the coffee in the hot sand and explained his Iraqi coffee is different than Turkish style coffee because it has cardamom. He then presented the coffee in a very lavish setting of silverware, which felt like a treat! Then the soup and salad came. The soup was savory and the salad was refreshing. The dressing was slight sweet and tangy, reminding me what I used to have in Asia. Then the lamb shank came, once again the owner told me to watch while he poured hot ghee onto the lamb shank, which created a crackling sound and flavorful aroma. He then garnished it with some freshly picked mint. The lamp shank was tender and delicious, and the rice and bread were the perfect companions as they soaked into the flavorful gravy. The portion was very generous and I found myself taking most of it home. Overall, I was very happy that I gave the family restaurant a try as I got not only the delicious food, but also quite some entertainment from the owner as well! Ps. I heard they also have delicious breakfast crepes and can't wait to give it a try next time!

Yelp
An absolutely fabulous spot! The food is incredible and the service is top-notch. I highly recommend- and don't forget to order a Turkish coffee!
google avatar

Yelp
First time here and what an amazing experience! The Turkish Coffee was so good. We ordered two breakfast plates, Chicken Sausage and Beef mix. Both outstanding. The Bread Pastry with dipping sauce was my favorite. We ended the breakfast with their amazing Pistachio Baklava. You can tell it's family owned and the service was so friendly. We will be back and will tell our friends and family.
google avatar

Patrick W.

Yelp
There is so much to like I have a hard time organizing my thoughts. Quaint and small space with lots of character. The daughter / father team (on this night) are just delightful, friendly people. Chicken wrap was simple and delicious with a nice crisp wrap. Enjoyed the omelette as it was nicely and uniquely spiced. The highlight for us was the lamb shank that can easily feed two. Not gamy at all and fall off the bone. Accompaniment soup and salad makes for a nice balance. If you are a lamb shank lover like I am, you must try it. I'll be back... what a lovely, tasty, Middle East cuisine escape.

Yelp
Food was amazing and so flavorful. Love all the spices, was not over powering at all. Tried 3 different dishes, Turkish coffee and some tea. I would highly recommend and I will go back again!
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
Customer service is excellent! Food was a lovely experience of Turkish food. Coffee was amazing and it was neat to see the young lady make my Turkish coffee. Love this place will come again.
google avatar

Jez V.

Yelp
Didn't expect much from this place but was pleasantly impressed with the service, food, and coffee! They have limited seating indoors but the wait time wasn't too bad on a Sunday afternoon. We got Turkish coffee and it was set up so nicely for us. I got an omelette with toast and it was delicious. It seems to be a small family business and everyone who served us was so kind with excellent service! Please support this local business :)
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
Another winning meal in the books! I've been wanting to visit this place for a long time but wanted to enjoy it with my wife. She's the less adventurous, foodwise, between the two of us. But today, she has an open mind. A big score for us as we add Family Cafe to our list of local, favorite eateries. It's a quaint little spot on Broadway where parking might be scarce. So if you live nearby, just walk over. They have ample seating, though it might still feel a little cramped in the small dining area. The proprietors are busily preparing meals and interacting with customers. They're very friendly and we felt welcome the whole time we were there.

Peyton S.

Yelp
Incredible restaurant and lovely people. My favourite place to eat. My heart and tummy always leave so happy.
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
We came here to try something new and it was fantastic. We got there right as it opened and the place is so cute and small and has really fun decorations. The people who work there are great and very kind and the food was delicious. We got the tea service which was so good. I would 100% recommend going here and maybe a little bit early cuz it does get quite busy since it's small. In the summer they have outdoor seating too
google avatar

Becky G.

Yelp
We had a lovely time visiting Family Cafe for brunch last weekend. It was such a cozy environment and the staff were all very welcoming. The menu had a variety of Arabic items, along with several American options. I ordered the sakshuka with a fresh juice and my boyfriend ordered the lamb plate with Turkish coffee. The sakshuka was very good, especially with the fresh bread. I loved the taste of the middle eastern spices. My boyfriend said the lamb plate was good, but he would probably order something different next time. Unfortunately, there are only a few indoor tables, so we had to sit outside when it was a bit chilly. Next time I'll definitely have to order some of their desserts to go. Everything on display looked delicious.
google avatar

Octavia J.

Yelp
Amazing and flavorful food! Warm service and ambiance provided. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
The food was bomb, service was fantastic and the ambiance was a vibe. I was full and happy and warm with heater that was on at the outdoor seating. The owners are really kind and considerate and you can tell they are authentic. Awesome place 100% coming back.
google avatar

Taylor W.

Yelp
Food is tasty -- though I wouldn't say 5/5 stars on Yelp tasty. Be aware that it's a very small place - most of the seating is outside. Covered w/ heating, but not for everyone during winter.

Paula W.

Yelp
We just stumbled on this tasty cafe. New to Oregon so trying different places. I must say I loved Turkish coffee and I didn't even use sugar!!! It was delicious I had the dates and eggs which was different for me and it was delicious! my fiancé had a lamb omelette and really enjoyed it! Now Food is one thing. the customer service was superb. they actually take pride in their quaint restaurant and they make you feel welcome. the pistachio baklava was delish too! We will be back. When in Beaverton area give them a try! They won't disappoint
google avatar

Melissant B.

Yelp
Great food! Such nice, sweet people. Cute and cozy. Wish I had tried this restaurant years ago! Definitely will return.

C R.

Yelp
Amazing delicious food, wonderful, rich Turkish coffee. Beautiful peaceful ambiance. Wonderful service. Try the Fava Beans lunch and the Mixed Beef breakfast. I'm so glad we decided to try this place. It is the best! If I could give this place six stars I would.

Alex D.

Yelp
This place was incredible, from the incredible friendliness of the owners and staff, from the flavorful healthful food. We came for the authentic Turkish coffee and food, we stayed for the genuine kindness and joy they show to their patrons, adults and children alike. We will be back and letting friends and family know about this gem!

Noah C.

Yelp
Truly one of the best cafes/restaurants I have ever been to. Food is phenomenal, Iraqi tea and Turkish coffee were real standouts as well. Shocked I have not heard anyone recommend this place. Have dreamt of their pastries and will be recommending this place in the future.
google avatar

Sharyn A.

Yelp
Cute small cafe serving breakfast and lunch all day. We had the dates and eggs, halawa and savory pastries. My husband has turkish coffee and I had pineapple orange smoothie. Incredible food, service and atmosphere!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Delicious, adorable, and affordable! Tried three dishes: the lamb rice, fava bean plate, and beef mix omelet, and each had such complimenting flavors and textures! I don't typically like lamb, as it's too gamey for me--but I really enjoyed it and all the dishes! Was thoroughly impressed. The Turkish coffee and milk tea were lovely too, as was the presentation for each drink. After just taking a few bites of just the salad that came with the beef mix and lamb rice, I said I wanted to bring my husband here and definitely will. Service is super friendly and down to earth too. They deserve their almost 5-star rating!

Bess H.

Yelp
I can't recommend this place enough. Everything we had was incredible. The Turkish coffee and fava bean plate were absolutely stellar. The ambience was warm and cozy, and the service was outstanding. We all walked out talking about how lovely of a lunch it was all around. I can't wait to go back and I can't recommend eating here enough.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
What a treat! We just had breakfast at The Family Cafe in old Beaverton and it was really excellent. They don't do anything flashy on the menu or website so we didn't know what to expect, but the food was terrific and the Turkish coffee was delicious and gorgeous. The "family" vibe seemed authentic. Not a lot of indoor seating so go on a nice day and enjoy the cute outdoor booths. Middle eastern flavors well crafted and yummy. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
I really wasn't expecting to like this place so much! My husband surprised me with a brunch spot and didn't tell me about the spot until we got there. It's very small inside but it give a very cozy homey vibe. The Turkish coffee had a very powerful but soothing scent. The tea cups delivered in it was very esthetic! Living in the world of social media and influencers, having esthetic dishes makes small things like this very "instagrammable", which is very good for business. The tea was light with the option of adding sugar cubes to make it taste more sweeter. I am a big supporter of small businesses especially family businesses. Unlimited bottled water was already a win for me. I ordered the Beef dish and my husband ordered the Omelette special! We went halvies on both meals because everything was flavored so well. My dish came out in a skillet pan and it kept the food warm for so long! I have to say, I did not expect this Sunday morning brunch to turn into a new favorite local spot. I definitely felt like I was dining elsewhere and not just in my local neighborhood. I plan to come back again just for that Turkish coffee.

Yelp
Food 6.0* Service 6.0* Ambiance 6.0* We had the Fava beans, chicken wrap, lamb shank, Hawala and baklava. Everything was amazing, we will be back!

Yelp
Excellent food and service. I loved this restaurant. I went for the first time and immediately felt in love. I felt so welcomed and the service was amazing. Very sweet family/people, super cozy atmosphere. I loved the food, great options and variety of foods for everyone to enjoy. I highly recommend it, can't wait to go back !
