Eight Excellent Restaurants and Places to Eat Between LA and San Diego | Eater LA

"A multigenerational, family-operated farm located amid upscale Rancho Santa Fe neighborhoods that supplies pristine produce to chefs and the public; the on-site farm stand offers exemplary strawberries and tomatoes alongside rarer items like Chinese winged beans, French black turnips, and golden snow peas. With a long local pedigree and notable chef patrons, it’s a reliable source for fresh snacks and specialty ingredients to take home." - Eater

Google
I had been wanting to stop by Family Farms, my cousin just lives down the road so we decided to buy some fresh and delicious strawberries. We’re making a strawberry pie. Let me state that the only place you’re going to find sweet strawberries is at farms like this also they let you pick the strawberries at certain times of the week, speaking time the best month to get the sweetest strawberries is July. Family Farms also have fresh vegetables and fruit. They grow mostly everything at their plots and what they don’t have is Shipped mostly from Santa Maria California. I gave this farm five stars all around for the customer service, and the produce they produce it takes hard work and dedication to maintain farms like these, which are very rare. we also picked up a fresh sweet mango and avocado.

First time here picking strawberries. It’s small strawberry patch but there’s plenty of strawberries to pick. We went on a nice day so it was enjoyable and not a lot of people. You get a small box for $10 to fill with strawberries along with scissors for cutting the stems. There’s also a veggie and fruit stand.

First off staff here are very rude, they yelled at my kids, ohh and my kids cried after, staff takes advantage of elderly. Personally I feel some rules are extra. Pipes are exposed I slipped on one and the staff said don't touch the strawberry beds. Ohh I'm sorry for sliping on the pipe and falling on the bed. Post a sign if you don't want us to walk in the rows Also many mud puddles my daughter step in mud puddles. Also if it is a self pick I feel that the rows should be a little wider, they are very narrow. Equipment was also left there I can not get past. I had to walk back to the next row. But they yelled at us for walking back. Just because of my daughter braking one rule on accident the staff just kept staring and us. They said if you brake the rules 3 times they will kick us out. Train your staff to be polite talking to adults and children. I would give it zero out of 5, 0 out of 10 recommend. I hope to hear back.

Google
A really nice selection of produce. Lasts a good time in the fridge. Berries last longer than store bought for sure. Nice to see families bringing their kids to pick their own strawberries and show kids what work is. Kids love taking pics on the tractor.

Google
I just wanted to thank you! My students loved going there. They were even asking to go back next year. They loved making the flower arrangement :) You guys are doing amazing!!!

Yelp
I went with my friend in May for strawberry picking. $5 for entrance and another $5 for a regular small container. There was a lot of strawberries that are ready to be picked. The strawberries were really sweet and juicy, some were extremely large. The smell of the strawberries were amazing. It is a great place for children especially. They also sell other fresh fruits and vegetables in the front. * They ONLY ACCEPT CASH or Venmo. There's enough parking spaces in the front as well.
google avatar

Yelp
It's a small farm, but it gets the job done. $10 for a box of self-picked strawberries is a great deal. Just be sure to go for the darker ones--they're the sweetest. My only gripe is that you can't easily cross between rows without having to backtrack and loop around.
google avatar

Vienna Q.

Yelp
All the pro slept really good really fresh obviously it's comes from the farm behind them. The guy at the stand definitely is not the right type of customer service. They need there which I thought was funny. Def not a sales man asked him how the watermelons were. He said they're OK and then that was it. I just thought that was funny. I still bought one, but I'm hoping for the best. It's super heavy, dark green, somewhat solid lines well no solid lines so hoping for the best. Otherwise they truly don't need a salesman. They produced us sell itself. I just thought it was funny his personality. Would definitely come back. It was super chill. Obviously you get a shop as you please.

Yelp
Fun, family run strawberry farm. $10 for a small 1lb container, $20 for a large 2Lb container including admission. They have a tractor you can take pics on, and lots of other produce for purchase. Love you can go strawberry picking in Feb!

Yelp
Strawberry picking has always been a cute date idea and that's exactly what this was. We came on a typical Saturday seeking for the largest and sweetest strawberries. We were surprised to have so much fun, making memories and sharing laughs with each other. Family Farms in Chino has a place in our hearts. Strawberries are priced well but the enjoyment is really picking it on your own.

Yelp
Fun family outing spent at Family Farms! I loved that this place isn't too far from LA and OC counties. Not too far off the freeway too. $10 pays for entrance fee and a plastic container you fill with the strawberries you pick. There's tons of strawberries to pick from. Make sure you stay within the paved walkways and off of the black tarps. The fields are well maintained. The recent rain helped! Currently $4.99/lb so the prices are fair in my opinion. We had a great time here and look forward to visiting again in June when they have yellow watermelons to harvest. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This was a very fun and affordable activity! Pricing: - $5 admission (no box for strawberries) - $10 admission + small box of strawberries - $15 admission + large box of strawberries Experience: - you pay (card or cash) then get the rules explained to you - no jumping over the strawberry rows, no eating, etc - there are long fields of strawberries so there aren't any gaps to cross another side of the strawberries. You have to walk all the way across or back. - there is no shade so dress according to the weather! Tip: Walk towards the back since people tend to get all the good strawberries towards the front of the fields Have fun picking!

Yelp
Great selection of veggies and fruit, poplar with the locals and service is perfect. Larger than normal street side fruit stands. Grounds are well kept and host strawberry picking when in season. Picture opportunities for your Instagram or Tik Toc profile. Wholesome garden vibes.

Yelp
Strawberries were delicious!! Sweet and juicy strawberries. I went with my little cousins and they enjoyed the experience of picking their own strawberries. It was a $5/person fee plus $5 for a regular strawberry container to put your handpicked strawberries in. They have a cute photo spot and restrooms(port-a-potty) with an outdoor sink which is convenient so you can wash a strawberry and eat it. We also stubbed by the little market with fresh fruits and veggies. Everyone we came across was nice. I will be coming again and again every strawberry season!

Yelp
Fun filled day for the family to enjoy. We paid $10 per person. Enough parking. People are coming and going so wait isn't that long for parking. Some of the strawberries were over ripe and some were dried. I think we might of came on the wrong day. Also, after getting home and washing they were really soft and not so pretty. We also notice they weren't as sweet as they look. We made a strawberry aqua Fresca.
google avatar

Sparkles D.

Yelp
We had a great family day picking strawberries I luv that there is a station to wash them. There's a store on the side with other freshly picked things. The only thing is if you decide to buy strawberries and not pick them it's still the same price. The customer service was friendly. The outside was definitely family friendly for sure.
google avatar

Tatiana D.

Yelp
Delicious produce. I go weekly. My family loves the food. I have been letting all my clients and friends know about this place. You can also pick strawberries.
google avatar

Vivian I.

Yelp
My daughter wanted to celebrate her birthday picking strawberries with her besties, and Family Farms was so accommodating! It's a family run farm and they helped reserve a few tables for us, saved a couple aisles for our families to pick strawberries and even gave my daughter a little gift. The strawberries we all picked were so yummy and the farm itself is cute and quaint. They also have a small fresh produce store out front where we picked up a few vegetables and a strawberry potted plant to hopefully grow in our own little garden at home.
google avatar

Messy P.

Yelp
I was a little anxious looking at pictures online. I wasn't sure if they had a lot of strawberries to pick. It's a small farm in a residential area but there are plenty of strawberries! It's $10 per person that includes the box to fill with strawberries you pick. The box must close! They have limited dirt parking in the front but there is plenty of street parking near by. They also sell various vegetables, fruits, and plants! Oh, and the strawberries were delicious and super sweet. I can't wait to make some strawberry bread :)
google avatar

Charles P.

Yelp
Forget buying strawberries from the market, buy them fresh hand picked by you! 1) Park: parking free in front which is mainly gravel or dirt. 2) Admission: $10 admission because each person gets a small box plus scissors. Or buy 1 large box for $20 which allows 2 people inside. 3) Rules: No "eating" lol while picking and the boxes must close fully when you walk out. 4) Picking: Recommend coming with your tennis shoes or shoes too don't mind getting dirty since the ground can be muddy. I noticed everyone tend to go all the way to the back as they assume there will be more ...we figured out that many people skip the front. 5) Store: strawberries are $7-12 for the boxes in the front along with other item. $3 more for a box with stems. 6) Time: 30 -40 min should be the max time . It's not a large place but your kids will have fun!

Yelp
I stopped by here on my way home from errands. I was going to buy strawberries at the grocery store but then I remembered my friend had posted on her Instagram that she got her order from this place. All of the fruit /produce looked amazing. I opted for Two bundles of strawberries and one raspberry. She allowed me to mix and match for a total of $12. I was happy to support a local farm! When I got the strawberries home, I soaked them in vinegar, water, and baking soda. Then after they were all cleaned off, we ate some. We finished off the raspberries right away and ate several of the strawberries. My kids loved them. They were so sweet and delicious. Will definitely be back and try some of their other produce! If you're in the area, I'll be sure to stop there and grab some goodies! They have honey nuts, and any kind of produce you can think of really!

Joey C.

Yelp
We took our 4-year old strawberry picking here and she LOVED it. Ive never tasted fresh strawberries. Unbelievable flavor like candy.
google avatar

Tammi J.

Yelp
Love this place. I serve their strawberries at my restaurant. We love supporting local. All the produce is fresh.
google avatar

Salina G.

Yelp
Love the experience ! And the strawberries are very tasty! It's worth it to check this strawberry field out. Can get a little busy so try to get there early

Yelp
Been going to family Farms for years. Recently my wife and I visited the farm to purchase some items. Not sure what's going on, but the prices have gone crazy. I understand them going up because of inflation, but I can now buy the same items at my local Stater Bros for a cheaper price. I will also say that the quality of the items sold there have decreased.
google avatar

Ebony H.

Yelp
Drove from Orange County for fruit and it was very underwhelming. Strawberries were NOT good and the customer service was awful.
google avatar

Melissa Z.

Yelp
The owner was extremely warm and welcoming. The fruit and veggies are priced perfectly. Family & I had a great time, can't wait to be back!!

Lilli W.

Yelp
Family farms has the best strawberries I have ever eaten and all the workers are supper nice!
google avatar

Tammy N.

Yelp
Love this farm! Strawberries are delicious! Was able to walk in the back to look at their garden. It's a small place but loved it! Plenty of freshly veggies and fruits to buy! Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Amber Ashley T.

Yelp
If you are itching to go strawberry picking this season in the IE, then come here! I have never been so we were looking for a place that was nearby and found this gem! Strawberry Picking- There's a little stand outside that you go up to and ask for the little containers to put the picked strawberries in! It's $10 for each container. Then you go to the field in the back and pick until you fill up your container! Definitely recommende the strawberries were juicy, fresh, and had quite a bit. We got two containers filled! There are areas to wash your hands and the fruits if you can't wait to get home to eat them like I did! You can also purchase other fruits and veggies from the stand! They have quite a selection from pineapple and other berries to cilantro and lettuce. I bought mangos for $2 each! Parking- There's limited parking on the little gravel area so be mindful of that! Highly recommend for the location, price, and selection!

Yelp
I've heard so many good things about this lil farm stand. I decided to stop by this afternoon. I used to buy veggies here years ago under a different owner. It was very clean and they had a variety of fruit & vegetables. Everything looked so fresh. I bought a head of lettuce, honey dew melon, jalapeños, mini cucumbers, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower & 2 lemons. I'm so glad I decided to stop and support my local business today. Thank you for the fresh produce & good prices! I will be back!

Erwin M.

Yelp
I had a similar experience as others where I was charged more than expected by a gentleman. He charged my card $38, and when I questioned the price, he seemed very confident until he looked at the items again and apologized. He then gave me a $20 cash refund. How can you misprice things so badly? Additionally, I've been coming here for a while, but the prices have increased significantly. You'd be better off going down the street to a local supermarket.
google avatar

Vika S.

Yelp
Sweet strawberries. It's $5 for a plastic basket. Like in the store but the taste is completely different, tastier. They also sell a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits and everything is clean on display. You can also come to pick if you are interested and wash and eat it immediately. The vendor is friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Yujia F.

Yelp
Their strawberries are SUPER SWEET! I can't stoping eating on the way back home. It is a good place to bring your kids to embrace nature and pick the strawberry by themselves. Currently they close at 5PM. $4 per person to enter and $4 per pounds for strawberry. Only the men who probably owns the farm is very rude. We paid all we get and watching kids walk around the strawberry sign but the men insisted that we didn't pay.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Be alert and aware when ringing up your order. My family has been coming here for a couple years and I don't believe it is a coincidence anymore that there have been "mistakes" when giving us our total price. A gentleman has provided us with multiple totals that were no way close to our actual price. Today, he told my mother she owed $38. When questioned, it was then $20. Then, when questioned again the correct total was 17.50. I am now second guessing all those times I left thinking the price sounded a little off, but paid and left anyway not wanting to be negative. Just be aware from now on.
google avatar

Gisselle L.

Yelp
They are NOT organic so I have been paying high price for pesticide for years??? Been a local customer for YEARS and never asked due to trust, but someone asked recently and I overheard them say they are not organic. Don't believe me? Ask them the same question and see what they say. Watch they might even delete this comment so I will screenshot it im case lol Welp the search for organic farms continues...
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
{Admission} $10 per person (this includes admission and a box (or clamshell) for you to fill with strawberries) - If you want extra strawberries or pick lots of strawberries and your clamshell won't close, you'll have to purchase another clamshell at $5 each. {Service from staff} - Super kind! They teach you how to pick strawberries and are super mindful of the number of people present. They try their best to make sure we do not clash into each other. - One thing that really stood out was when a staff member asked what language we preferred and proceeded to provide us with translation using Google. I thought this was super thoughtful and sweet of her as I don't often see people putting in this much effort to ensure their clients understand and have an enjoyable experience. {Parking} - Free - Cars park on the gravel/sand. Spots are limited. - There's additional parking just pass the stoplight on the side of the farm. {Others} - They have a small stall right outside where they sell super fresh fruits and veggies! I bought a bag of oranges ($7) and some super sweet green grapes ($6-7)! I visited twice, once on Sat and another on Sun. I recommend going to the farm around 10-11 am as they tend to run out of good strawberries in their field/fruits in their shop by 2 pm (in which case, they may decide to close early too). Happy picking!

Jeannette J.

Yelp
This is HANDS DOWN the best place to buy produce. Nothing is more fresh and the taste of the fruit and veggies are amazing. Yes amazing! I've never had sweeter strawberries from anywhere. The jicama is sweet. I can honestly say that in all my years I have never had a jicama that tasted like anything but here is perfect. I usually stock up on a Sunday to get me through the week and pop in again if needed. Because everything is super fresh you really need to plan ahead and decide on what will be eaten first. It's crazy to see that celery from the farm goes limp in 3-4 days and when I buy it at regular grocery store is lasts for weeks(weird, what's in it??) You have to make this your regular produce stop. You will definitely taste a difference and your body will thank you TRUST ME. Plus it's a family owned establishment and no one workers harder than a farmer. I respect that. They also offer strawberry picking on the weekends. It's a great place to take the family.

Lorraine C.

Yelp
Love the produce and they also have organic produce too. Perfect for my mother in law and other families. These fruits and veggies are delicious and you and see. I love how cute they have organized the food and made it for other families to shop. The service is amazing! I had problems paying, and the lady said, it's ok. Come back next time to pay. This is how people should be. Trusting, understanding & humble. I have paid my debt. They will always have my support.
google avatar

Rowena R.

Yelp
It was a beautiful Saturday morning and perfect weather for strawberry picking! Arrived at 8:30 am and had almost the whole field to ourselves. So many selections of strawberries, I couldn't decide which ones to pack in our baskets they all look delicious! This was our first visit here and we were introduced by welcoming friendly staff. They directed us and we're so so helpful. We can't wait to come again hopefully before the end of the strawberry season. I definitely recommend, the strawberries were delicious and the kiddos had fun picking them out as well!
google avatar

Sinai R.

Yelp
Something relaxing and enjoyable with the kids, they definitely get excited, feel helpful and accomplished as they're finding the right strawberries to fill their basket. The lady upfront who let us in had manners and was helpful with explaining how to strawberry picking worked she was attentive. Also they sell fruits and veggies upfront and they're so rich in flavor, better than store bought! They have a big bag of oranges for $8 and big big watermelon for $15 ect.. they also have homemade strawberry jam and honey along with other treats. When I was paying locals were stopping by just to buy fruits and veggies and leaving, made me wish I could live closer so I could also do that! I took my 7year old daughter who always has too much energy to sit still and she enjoyed it and was calm for a bit hahaha and I also took my 14 year old brother who has autism and always play video games and never wants to get out his room, he also enjoyed it and was laughing at the shapes of certain strawberries he found making jokes and references to what they resembled to him we all enjoyed it and were definitely looking forward to going again

Sally R.

Yelp
Great time picking strawberries with the family. We found a new family tradition. I thought it was only a strawberry farm, but I was pleasantly surprised to see all the produce and flowers. It's a must.
google avatar

Jennie W.

Yelp
Fresh fruits and vegetables, had so much fun taking my family out there and the stuffs nice and friendly
google avatar

Kanokpech N.

Yelp
The strawberries were so juicy and sweet. Great place to bring family to enjoy picking own strawberries

Victoria G.

Yelp
They aren't transparent about what they are selling. I have asked in a personal message as well as a comment under their post if their stuff is organic and instead of answering they removed my comment under false allegations that I was posting for "likes/shares" that seems shady and I wouldn't buy fruit/veggies from a place that isn't honest about what they are providing. I would still consider going there if it wasn't organic for the experience and just do a deep wash on everything but now I won't since they want to dodge the question, seems suspicious... no thanks. Full transparency about what people are consuming is appreciated.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
Did pick your own strawberries. Low key, friendly people, nice picking. Good for kids. The strawberries were a little expensive.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Went there excited to go strawberry picking with my 2 year old daughter for the first time. The front lady is not welcoming. She told us that the entry was $10 for the small container & I said okay. I asked her if my daughter had to pay & she said "yes, she has to, she's already walking". Could've just say yes instead of making that comment. As my daughter & I were inside picking our strawberries, we saw an older lady & her grandson picking strawberries that came after us as well & they only seemed like they paid for one entry because I saw both of them picking strawberries & only had one clear container just like we did. I also felt watched the whole time, because as soon as we entered the front lady went to some other farmers & were just keeping an eye out on us until we left, they went somewhere else too & not stayed where they were watching us from. Never coming here again!
google avatar

Lawrence S.

Yelp
This was so much fun for my younger daughter! We came early on a weekday to try and avoid any crowds It was a nice cool overcast day as well. I showed her how pluck the strawberries and we went to town picking them! She had a ball! They had some really nice juicy, plump, thicc strawberries. When we got home and tried them, they were really delicious too! I'll be back her for sure!
google avatar

MFace ..

Yelp
Will never go here again. I use to go weekly here to purchase my fruits/veggies & green chilies for my salsa. Went back three times to get some chilies- unfortunately ( for me) they had been sold out. Gave it one more shot on Sunday morning and was ignored and trumped by a ONE time strawberry gathering customer! Do not ignore your "REGULARS" they are regulars BECAUSE they return, often !!!
google avatar

Deena I.

Yelp
Strawberry picking for the family. Fun Sunday morning activity. Outdoors. Ended up with containers of strawberries like from the grocery store and with an added activity- strawberry picking Staff by gate to check folks in. Sounds like you can make a reservation. We didn't make one and were in after about 5 minutes. You basically have a 30 minute window to walk down a row and pick strawberries. Since it was a Sunday morning it seems crowded. We had to wait to walk down the row because there were too many people picking strawberries. You just walk down the entire row and walk out the other side to pay. You get a plastic container to fill with strawberries and you can fill the container as long as it closes. They also have a produce stand but there was a long line to get in so will be back to get some. Kids had a lot of fun and so did the adults.

Huma W.

Yelp
Such a fun way to spend a weekend morning! We went strawberry picking as a play date group with kids and grandmas and everyone had a great time-- and fresh strawberries to boot. The staff even surprised my mom with a gorgeous sunflower bouquet as we were leaving. She's visiting me from out of town so their kindness was that much more meaningful for both of us. There's a cute produce stand close by that is sourced from another farm they own right down the street, and pretty paintings for memorable photo ops for the family spread throughout the area. All in all, highly recommend this experience.

Natalie S.

Yelp
I tried to contact the owner to ask if the strawberries grown there are organic, which I had a feeling they weren't, which is ok , but what type of product was used. Do they use , herbicides ? Etc.. my phone calls were ignored. We have another farm that was shut down by the county here in Chino , because they were not following the rules and using one that was not allowed . How many places are doing this in the city of Chino. They should be answering these questions and not ignoring the customers. Do they have something to hide? Well they lost my business. Won't be back . I want to know what is on my produce/food. Some of these products are cancer causing chemicals. Glyphosate on strawberries is really bad for your health.
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
Family Farms is a good place to pick strawberries by yourself and a good place to spend time with your family and friends. Children like here very much. Strawberries are fresh and the price is reasonable. It's worth visiting.

Steve M.

Yelp
This was a one-time experience for us. Brought our kid to pick some strawberries and were thrown off by how expensive this "experience" is. $5 entry per person (regardless of age or if you're there simply to supervise your child) plus the cost of a strawberry container ($5-$15). So, at minimum, a family of 3 is down $20 for what ends up being a small plastic container of berries. Which, by the way, aren't even very sweet. "Farm" environment isn't quite there either... small field is surrounded by a bunch of buildings. Pro-tip: create a small garden bed and plant your own Strawberries at home. Less expensive and kids can learn how to plant from start to finish.
