15 Great Takeout Options To Eat At The Beach - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"This old-school fish counter is in a strip mall across from the StubHub Center in Carson. It’s Louisiana-style, meaning you’ll pick between snapper, sole, catfish, or shrimp, and they’ll fry it right in front of you. Everything is available a la carte, but we like the combo specials, which get you several pieces of fish and two sides (you want the hush puppies) for under $10. From there, it’s only about a 15-minute drive to Redondo Beach." - brant cox

11 Great LA Seafood Markets For Pick-Up & Delivery

"It’s all in the name at Family Fish Market, the family-run seafood spot in Carson. They’re probably best known for their excellent Louisiana-style fish fries, but you can get great prices on fresh seafood here, too. They’ve got catfish, tilapia, and red snapper, all for under $10. And even if you’re just picking up fish to cook at home, we highly recommend coming back for their fried shrimp and hush puppies sometime very soon." - brett keating

I ordered the 5 shrimp and 2 piece fish (red snapper) with the Mac n cheese and okra. I could not eat the okra because it was to salty. The fish and shrimp was great ! Loved it yummmy. The employees were super friendly !! Will return again soon

Have been going here for over 20+years good still taste good. But the phone service can be a little annoying at times when you call. Update →(concerning the annoying comment, the girl that was working there is now gone and making a phone order is much easier now) But honestly it's much better to place your order over the phone and driving down to pick it up. Because it takes at least 15-20 minutes for your order to be cooked if you order at the market. Looking at some of the reviews concerning the pricing I just updated the pictures with the new menu prices since the pics on Google maps were the older menu prices that people would assume they are correct if it's your first time going. Hopefully these new menus will help those looking to place a phone order but unsure of the prices! Enjoy 😊

Google
The fish was just okay. It was fried to perfection, but it had no seasoning. The flavor was bland. But obviously, judging by the crowd of patrons, my opinion may be in the minority. The staff, on the other hand, was great. No Dine-In. It's Take-Out only. And they tack on a surcharge for credit & debit cards.

Family Fish has long been my favorite fish market in the Los Angeles area. The catfish, oysters, and slaw are great, and I've been phoning in my orders for many years, despite living in various cities and counties. My church and many friends are right around the way! 👌🏾

Google
I ordered cat fish steaks should have followed my mind and not get any. It was the last few pieces after getting home taste it and it tastes spoil should have followed my mind. The catfish filet I ordered was good. I should have drove back to get my money back but I didn't feel well so it was a waste of money.

Delicious every time, bring them cash if you can, but they take card with no problem, it’s simple they don’t waste your time, GOOD FISH GOOD SERVICE 👍🏽

Google
Excellent customer service. They have all kinds of good fish. You buy it. They will cook it for you. I only went to buy Hush Puppies.

Google
Fresh, crispy and delicious. They are always crowded because they never disappoint. Takes 20-30min but definitely worth the wait. I usually call my order in ahead of time. My favorite is the dinner combo with filet sole. It comes hush puppies, shrimp, oysters and 2 sides. I get double fries.

Yelp
I will start by saying this. I have been going to family fish market for YEARS..as far as I can remember. At least for 25+ years. I would always go with my grandmother and she would order the same thing I order now Fried Catfish tail dinner fried hard with 2 sides. Actually, I prefer to come to this market instead of going to Anne's fish marked down the street because FFM almost always have catfish tail in stock and when Anne's would have it, they would say "oh we can't sell you the tail because we have a customer that likes to buy the catfish whole" (crazy. I know) Anywho, Family Fish Market used to be so flavorful and delicious however after my purchases in the last few months and most importantly, this week, I don't think I will be purchasing from there any longer. I ordered by phone a Fried Catfish tail dinner that came with 5 pieces (that's a lot and I love that part) and I asked for it to be cooked hard which means fried a bit longer, maybe 5 minutes longer. Then I was told it would take about 20 minutes. Well I arrive to pick up my order 35 minutes later and it's not ready. Ok, no worries because good food takes time right? Cool so I wait...and wait...and wait and I don't end up leaving the store until at least 45 minutes after I placed my order...ridiculous. With my catfish, my sides were French fries and macaroni salad. I promise you everything was bland as if salt never touched any of my food. Not the fish fry, not the French fries and not the macaroni salad. Nothing had seasoning which is disappointing because the fish was fried to perfection! But who is eating fried fish with NO seasoning in or on it?? Certainly not me! Family Fish Market has dropped the ball with the quality of their product as of late and it sucks because going here brings back so many memories from when I was a child. Do better.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer of Family Fish Market for over 10 years+. For most of that time, this was my go-to spot, and I would visit at least once a month. However, last year's visit left me disappointed, and today confirmed that I will never return. I ordered the 20-piece shrimp and tilapia combo with coleslaw, red snapper (fried hard), and macaroni salad, as well as a side of fillet. Unfortunately, the quality has completely gone downhill. The shrimp and tilapia were salty, soggy, and overly greasy. The fries, which I specifically asked to be crispy, arrived limp and soggy. The macaroni salad tasted sour, and the fillet was both fishy and salty. While the flavor was there, the overall execution and quality were severely lacking. It's heartbreaking to write this because I absolutely loved this place and used to rave about it. But after today's experience, I've decided to take my business elsewhere. Family Fish Market has lost its touch and a loyal customer. We ended up tossing our food Waste of $55 hurts my soul! I absolutely don't like wasting food

Yelp
They still have amazing , consistent service and food here. Best to call before you order, or else you will be waiting around for awhile. A #1 Combo will now run you about 20 bucks
google avatar

Yelp
Still the best fish market around. Folks travel from near and far to get fish from Family Fish Market. You can get catfish steaks, filet sole, and individual sweet potato pies. All orders come with a good amount of hot sauce, tarter say, pickles and peppers. Fish is fresh, not smelly, and seasoned mildly.

Yelp
Is really good and service is amazing food is delicious, ambiance is so kind and nice I would definitely recommend this place

Yelp
Stopped here randomly after getting my dog vaccinated since it's somewhat close by. Called for pick up on a Friday at 10:03am and I can tell this place gets busy. Nicely asked me if I can hold, waited only like 2 min he was taking an order from a walk in. While on hold the phone rang again for another pick up order ! This place must be good! Greeted right when I walked in, got here like 15 min to early so I didn't expect it to be ready. I ordered the cat fish, shrimp with macaroni salad and cole slaw. I wanted fries but fried fish at 10am was already a lot lmfao I'm trying to be a little bit cautious of my arteries . Also cute little spot, very clean, no seating area so it's pick up only. It didn't smell fishy when I walked in which is great! The smell of uncooked seafood can be overbearing. Food: Catfish -Seasoned and fried perfectly ! The tarter sauce is bomb as well. More on the sweet side which is great. Shrimp- med size, seasoned and fried perfectly as well. Hush puppies- ain't nothing hush about these! realllyyy good! Should've ordered more Macaroni salad- it's decent but I liked the Cole slaw better, it has raisins in it but I don't mind, some people hate raisins in there Cole slaw Everything was really good and the service was great! They charge an extra 50 cents if you use a card, so bring cash if you want to avoid that fee.

Yelp
I was so disappointed today. I went to another fish market a few days ago and it was ok, so I decided to get fish from my "go to" familyr fish. It was awful the fries were soaked in oil; the shrimp were fried so hard they were just cornmeal, and my fish was tasteless. I knew it wasn't right when I opened the bag, it didn't smell good. I came all the way from the airport. $17 down the drain. Trashed it when I got to work. What is going on Family Fish? You were the best; my lunch was gross.

Monica B.

Yelp
I ordered the food over the phone. I was told 20-25 minutes the food would be ready. When I arrived about 22 minutes later the food was ready for pickup. The fries and hush puppies were cold and I noticed a smell when I went to use the napkins that are included with the bread and fork, it smelled mildewed! I smelled the bread it was in fact mildewed! I was disgusted! The fish was ok. I most definitely will not return.

Yelp
I love this place! Excellent food & sides, They really load up your plate. I recommend the catfish. It is always worth the wait.
google avatar

Shanell C.

Yelp
Super tasty shrimp and fish. Been going here for YEARS. Always fresh. The owners are friendly and food is always HOT. The lunch specials are the best. Very reasonably priced fish and shrimp combos. I go for the fish and shrimp lunch special. I also grab a 20 piece shrimp for 8 or 9 dollars. Such a great deal. This is Def enough for 2 people to share. They also have a 40 piece shrimp in medium and large that can feed a family. Be sure to say "well done" when you order to make sure everything is crunchy and cooked thoroughly. If in Carson, CA definitely try Family Fish Market
google avatar

Jp M.

Yelp
I can't believe this place was crowded. The fries were cold, stale and flavorless. Not a lick of salt. The coleslaw was terrible and the tartar sauce was a basic watered down mayo and mustard sauce without the relish. Terrible. The best thing honestly was the fish. Well cooked and lightly seasoned. Definitely won't be going back.

Rona M.

Yelp
Good fresh food, I have been a customer for years ..... You will not be disappointed... Plenty of parking... Busy on Friday in the late afternoons

Yelp
I visited Family Fish recently. It was okay, but not as good as it used to be. The service was okay. The guy almost forgot to include my pies. It's a good thing l asked about them. Unfortunately I went near closing time. I also didn't realize l was being charged an extra 50 cents on my debit card until l was already charged. I was a bit irritated about that because l could have paid cash had l known, but now l know if l should return and l know to let others know as well.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
The catfish fillet was cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back for more. Also liked that they made sure to ask me if I needed any extra sauce before walking out.
google avatar

Yelp
You buy fresh fish, seafood, and they fry. They are fast and provide great service.. This is not a restaurant to sit and eat. You can call place your order via phone and by time you drive there your order is ready. There are many types of seafood, side dishes and deserts. Yummy!
google avatar

Lorenzo B.

Yelp
Just had a shrimp combo dinner, 12p medium shrimp and I have to say it was disappointing, the batter had no favor. I got get with fries and hush puppies, they. Best thing was the fries, never got going again, I've tried them several times over the years and was never satisfied with the food!
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
I've heard so much about this Fish Market so I decided to grab lunch after the movies.. Ordered 20pc. Medium shrimp with small fries. Get home only to bite into UN-DEVEINED SHRIMP what a damn disappointment just because it's fried DO NOT mean you don't have to clean them!! YUK!! 1ST AND LAST TIME.. I'd go back to the FISH GRILL!
google avatar

Supajok C.

Yelp
This is still the best fish in LA County. However, 20 minutes on call in orders should not be 40 minutes. If your good cook is off, allow time for the 2nd team in your ETA.
google avatar

Donna R.

Yelp
Customer service & food-YUMMY!!!!! Never disappointed no matter what I order!!!! Call ahead to place order especially on Fri & Sat
google avatar

Jacy H.

Yelp
Really good fish and seasoned perfectly. Call your order in advance. it is always packed with people.
google avatar

Erica J.

Yelp
The fish is pretty good. They seems to be busy in there. Once I placed a large order including the fried oysters and after calling it in, going there to wait to pay and pick it up. I get home and the oysters are not there. So I call back to tell them and the guy insinuates that I'm lying about not having the oysters. It was quite off putting but he did eventually tell me I can come at anytime to pick up the oysters.
google avatar

Belinda D.

Yelp
Family fish is my favorite local fish market! Call ahead and place your order if you can because this place is so popular that they are typically very busy
google avatar

Yelp
Sometimes with a new restaurant you proceed with caution: you assess the situation first and decide whether or not you want to over commit or not. For me that's exactly what I did when I tried their plate. I went with the whiting fish + shrimp dinner that came with hushpuppies and fries. I hate when things are over fried, so I have to always specify for a light fry. The clerk was like " so you want us to make it how we usually do" I was like "if it's not a hard fry then yes" And how they usually do it was really good. It made me wish I had of gotten more food, but I guess there's always next time. I realized the wait would be longer waiting since I didn't call it in but this was my first time so I went inside to avoid things possibly getting lost in translation. There always seems to be people waiting for their orders and the lines can get a little bit long so keep that in mind when you visit. This seems to be the neighborhood spot.

Yelp
First off Everytime you do a phone order it's wrong. Check yo Shit! I been going for years and the Past 5 years they been Doing stuff there way although your the customer. Its about the family business gone down hill fast. They are just open to get your money, Not keep you as a custom. They change Employees ever other 4-5 months, So the service and the are how can I say, Umm like a Pissed off McDonald employee on Fries for 5 years. Make sure you check your food before you get home so you dont made when you try to enjoy your meal. I never have the Problem at James Fish on Avalon & Elsegundo and better Variety of FISH (BUFFALO DAILY) But it goes fast usually by 2/3!

Gemin I.

Yelp
I've been coming here since this place opened. I was so looking forward to my fish order when I popped in the other night. Normally, our orders have alway been called in so we can just pay and grab so there's no wait. This night I was craving some fish and had plenty of time to place my order and wait inside. So I placed my order and was waiting in line to pay for it. Another patron walked in and we greeted each other and he stood next to me comtemplating his order. We were both facing the fish display as the Asian gentleman who took my order and I assume was the manager/owner behind the counter proceeded to grab my fish order with some thongs and place it in a basket and put it on the counter behind him, so it could go to the back to be cooked. Upon completion he accidently dropped the thongs on the floor and you could here them flip flop on the ground. The gentleman next to me under her breath said, "Well I know he's not going to put that back in there" and I responded with head nod of agreeance like clearly there's no way this would happen especially since it was all clearly visable. In disbelief and we see the same guy, pick up the thongs and immediately tossed them back into the display case on top of the fish like that was the normal thing to do. In response, we both gasped out loud in unison in disappointment with a "NO". Then the guy who did it, looks at us and instead of acting with any remorse, he proceeds to close the display further shut because he left the door ajar. He looked at us in the eyes like we were the one's in the wrong. Still in disbelief and more importantly in disgust, I turn to the gentelman next to me and I said, yeah I'm good. I then proceed to turn my ticket in to the guy and tell him to cancel my order. I was not only disappointed but heartbroken and walked out. There was no questions asked because I know he saw that we saw what transpired and there was not one lookd of remorse on his face. This let me know that if a person is comfortable doing this in front of your face, what are they doing in the back when you are NOT watching. The heartbreak comes because I have fond memories associated with ordering their food for tons of gatherings and such. But when you see this type of conduct and you care about food handling you know that you can't possibly have any trust on confidence in their ability to be sanitary. Like there's no excuse. When I got to my car, I looked up and saw the other gentleman who had witnessed this incident walked out. I yelled to him if he ended up placing an order and he responded with no, he was done with them as well. I eat at lot of various places and regardless of setting, safe food handling is inperative. If you are bold enough to be unsanitary, then that's an easy no from me and my health and money. I don't care how tasty the food has been in the past. Times have changed and it's so easy to be sanitary. Who has time to deal with a food borne illness in today's world? Not me. I'll find some other place to order from in the future. If you still decide to eat from this spot I suggest you come in and place your order and wait inside so you can see how they run their business. Yes, they fry for free but it comes at a price of being unsanitary.

Yelp
MY TO GO FRIED FISH FIX!! I'm sad I no longer live close to get some fried fish as much as I'd like because I have yet to find a place as food! Love Family Fish!
google avatar

Shanea W.

Yelp
Some of the best fried fish in Carson! I like to get a mixture of the different fish types and the fries are really good. The service is always polite and quick, I typically call in my orders ahead of time to avoid long lines. There is plenty of parking outside as well.

Rubirtha F.

Yelp
I lived in the neighborhood before family fish. I started buying their fish when they first came to this city, it was so delicious I kept buying my fish there. They get to know the customers and always do great service. The fish is always fresh and delicious. I have relatives come from Los Angeles just to buy the fish.
google avatar

Harris S.

Yelp
Greasy, but pretty good! We had catfish, sole and red snapper! The sides were just alright.

Billy H.

Yelp
We had the red snapper Medium shrimp and fries Everything was fresh and good Could have a little more seasoning on the fish
google avatar

Iamdiva00 S.

Yelp
Services is mediocre if ur not serviced by the owners, always call ahead so ur not waiting 25 mins. 50 cent charge if u use a card on ur transaction

Louis T.

Yelp
Great fish. I drive from Inglewood to Carson to get the combo #1. And the prices are reasonable. If you're ever in Carson and want great fish, pop in you will not be disappointed. The service is great, and the wait is not long.
google avatar

Jasmine B.

Yelp
Kind of a long wait for mid fish and fries. Decided to try this place after suggestions on one of my tik tok reviews of another fish place. Ordered the catfish (fried hard) lunch with shrimp and fries. Fries were soggy, fish wasn't seasoned enough for me and the tartar was a bit watery. This place costs almost 4- $5 more than my usual, go to fish market for mediocre food, but I told everyone I'd review it. I wouldn't come back though. I think it's great for those who can't really have their food seasoned much (not being funny)
google avatar

Anthony J.

Yelp
I've been looking for a good fish fry place being new to the area and Family Fish Market is the place. You must get your order early, my visit last night hearing a call that red snapper was sold out. The bars on the door for a first time customer

Byron B.

Yelp
Good food great service and all the staff were very friendly. They asked if you needed forks spoons hot sauce, everything.

Verita D.

Yelp
Tried this place yesterday and was very disappointed! I would have returned the food if I have checked my order before I left the restaurant! The fries were so soggy soaked in oil(bad oil I'm imagined) and not seasoned I could not eat them! I ordered filet sole but I think they mixed it with catfish. The fish and shrimp had no flavor/no seasoning! The tiny shrimp they give you is a joke! I paid $18 and will never return! I don't understand how this restaurant received high ratings---it's the worst fish, shrimp and fries I ever tasted. I threw everything in the trash--it wasn't worth putting in my body! The guy who took my order was nice and accommodating but food is garbage!

Sugar K.

Yelp
Wowzers. First glance at this restaurant, I was impressed. This place is filled with all sorts of cuisines. But what truly sets Family Fish Market apart is their commitment to quality. You can taste the difference in every bite, knowing that the ingredients are sourced with integrity and prepared with passion.

Angela E.

Yelp
Best Fish ever! I tell everyone about this place. I go out of my way to get the 5 piece dinner. Always fresh and hot. I haven't tried anything else, because I don't get out there much. My go to is red snapper!
google avatar

Sgt S.

Yelp
Food is normally very good but I'm very disappointed the last few time I ordered food here. The fried shrimp was over cooked and dry. They changed the hot sauce and are getting greedy with the tartar sauce. Not sure if they change ownership or have different people running it.

Dimitrias S.

Yelp
Service is very slow, I ordered a shrimp plate and before two people after me gotten thier food before me. So unprofessional and disrespectful
google avatar

Richard B.

Yelp
I dont get the hate for this place. Sure it isn't perfect, but it isn't like Carson is the culinary center of the universe. Family Fish Market is a good fried fish joint. It is consistantly busy. They have a nice, flavorful, crisp breading. A wide variety of fresh fish. Orders come out hot and the staff will generally set you up. Could their sides be better, definitely. Could they have online ordering or a better phone reception, yeah. But everyone hating on this place, giving 1 star is crazy.
google avatar

Rena S.

Yelp
My family, my friends my teachers have all been coming here since I was a baby and now I come on Fridays with my babies lol we get our fish then walk down to Kens and grab some home made ice cream. The fish is always cooked to perfection, the line is always out the door so order ahead. This place is a true Carson staple, and the best part? They are never stingy with the hot sauce!!!
google avatar

Gregory W.

Yelp
Hands down the best fish from carson to OC. The carry a large range of fish. We get the Cat and Sanddabs . Call a head. The wait can be long. Tip: Some time we May over by to eat later. When we do this we would let the fish cool on top of paper towels and trans trader to a zip lock bag a place in the fridge. The key is to warm it up in the air fryer after taking the fish out the frigid for 10 to 15 minutes. That
google avatar

Keisha F.

Yelp
Service is great. Owner knows his regular customer by name. Fish is always great and prices are reasonable. My family goes 2 to 3 Fridays out the month

Duffia G.

Yelp
The food is good enough that I drive 10 miles, and pass many fish places to go to this one.

Tee F.

Yelp
Been going for years. They are consistant and clean. People that work there are polite. I recommend calling ahead to place order.
google avatar

Lowell E.

Yelp
A nice NEW PLACE to eat soul fish an it's a young couple doing it... When You get a chance if you in East Long Beach Ca. Don't take my word for it try it yo'self..
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Phenomenal fried fish!! The fish is fresh and delicious. It tastes as if the oil is changed regularly leaving the fried fish flavorful and fried to perfection. The tartar sauce is homemade and goes well with the hot sauce. Don't forget the pickles! Family Fish Market knows how to take care of their costumers and their staff. It is obvious that this family business is being ran with care and expertise.
