Phoenix’s Best Chicken Sandwiches - Eater Phoenix

"Famous 48 Local Chicken & Bar is known for its comfort food classics and the Havasu Chicken Sandwich is no exception: This crispy fried chicken treat is made with a special recipe hot sauce and topped with shredded lettuce, a light layer of mayonnaise, and dill pickles on a toasted brioche bun. Most importantly, each sandwich comes stacked with a seriously generous portion of chicken. Famous 48 offers in-restaurant dining, takeout, and delivery options." - Jamie Killin

We were visiting with family. Came to celebrate birthdays. Lexi, our server, was wonderful and on top of everything. Salmon was delicious, as were the fish and chips. Great vibe with outdoor seating. The desserts, though! Yummo!

Here's a different type of review compared to the usual for this venue (which I would also give 5 stars for by the way...): We hosted a party of 90 people on their patio and the night was executed flawlessly - there's no other way to put it. The patio is spacious and well lit for night events. They also gave us the back section of the interior area and set up our food buffet style that they kept replenishing. The staff were incredible, easy to work with, and went above and beyond. The food and drinks themselves were great. Planning with their management team ahead of time was incredibly easy. All in all, this restaurant group knows what they're doing and truly want their customer base to enjoy their experience. It's not every day you host near triple-digit people, but was I ever impressed with how the night turned out. Give these guys a shot for your larger/corporate/happy hour gatherings... you won't regret it.

Visited on a Friday evening and it wasn't too busy. The parking lot was insane and we parked almost five stores away. The server was nice and helpful. The food came out fast and was delicious. I ordered the egg roll app as my meal. The vibe was fun and I would definitely return and recommend.

Google
Absolutely thrilled they’ve brought over the delicious SWEET POTATO FRIES from Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers (same owners)! The wine menu here is fantastic, too. Big thanks to the amazing staff—we love coming here during the week and for football games!

We had a party and made a reservation. We were seated outside, we had our privacy. The food was delicious with the right portion. I couldn't take pictures of the food cos we were hungry. The drinks were great too. It's a great spot to eat when you visit Arizona.

Really enjoyed my time here! My husband and I are new to the area, been trying out some places and meet new people. Our bartender was amazing and the food was great. I recommend the dip trio and frozen whiskey and coke!

Google
Ordered the Grilled Drumettrs teriyaki flavor. They were very small. 5 Wings for 11 dollars. Wings where literally the size of my pinky fingers lol. Great service though and wonderful atmosphere

Our waitress Sedona and the manager Matt were Great. Sedona was attentive to my large party of 6 children and 4 adults. We sat outside on the patio area. Nice vibe to chill and have drinks without the kids. We ordered the Famous Cornbread, freaking delicious, flat bread pizza, taco pizza (great combination) fried chicken, Nashville Hot chicken, Border Bowl and Salmon with mashed potatoes and broccoli. We literally had NO COMPLAINTS. Everything was just right. This was my first time visiting Famous 48 and Arizona but when I come back I will definitely be heading to this restaurant. Everybody did a great job.

Yelp
We are visiting from out of town, the food here was fantastic! We had Asian salad, ribs, fried chicken, all enough for sharing. The service was quick and friendly, responsive. The night we went margaritas were on special for $6! Ambiance was casual and not too noisy. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This was our first time here. Our local friend Cindy recommended this place for pizza and reserved our table for ten family and friends, including three preschoolers. We arrived on time and were seated at our table of ten. I enjoyed my two spicy margaritas with Don Julio Blanco Tequila, Agave Nectar, Ancho Reyes Poblano, Lime Juice, Chile Rim on the rocks for $14 each. I shared and enjoyed the Margherita pizza with Grilled Tomato, Basil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil for $16.95. I also shared and enjoyed the cheese pizza for $14.95. My total bill for the ten of us was $313 before our discount. Our friend knows the owner and had a 20% discount coupon. After the 20% off food discount our dinner was reduced from $313 to $255 excluding gratuity. Antwan served our table very well despite our three preschoolers. We will likely return here if our friend Cindy still has her 20% off discount coupon.

Yelp
It's you're in to watching multiple hands simultaneously, this spot is for you. The bar had outdoor abs indoor stools. As well as patio seating. I tried the fried pickles and the chopped salad. They weren't bad choices. I was pleased. Accessible parking and entrance.

Yelp
We may have found our football Sunday spot or sports bar in Famous 48! Famous 48 has several TV's inside and out. I don't think there is a bad seat in the restaurant. The patio is perfect for groups or couples. They have couch seating, fire places, low tables and high tables. The bar is inside and out. There are also several heaters on the patio if the nights are chilly. Sunday Dec 15th we sat outside at a four top and our server was Sophie. Sophie is very nice as were the other servers and bus staff we interacted with. I think they were a little understaffed but they did the best they could to keep on top of the service. I don't think the management likes the staff to change the TV channels to different games, at least in our experience, but there are enough TV's so you could move to a different area if needed. Let's talk menu. The Four Peaks nachos with ground chuck and the buffalo flavored grilled drumettes were tasty. We also ordered the southwest eggrolls. These were our least favorites. We didn't care for the flavor or texture so didn't finish them. Sunday Dec 22nd we sat outside at the bar. Our bartender was attentive and friendly. We ordered the fried pickles which are fried with panko vs breading and the famous 48 pizza which is pepperoni, sausage and onions thin crust pizza. Both were very crispy and delicious. Famous 48 is nicer than some of the other sports bars I've been to in the metro area. Give it a try.

Yelp
Girls night out and these sandwiches did not disappoint! From the BLT to the prime rib! The bread was great and the meat was jammed pack with flavor. My favorite was the horseradish sauce it was tangy and had a good zing to it. The server was a little uneasy with a large group but I think they were still new which is totally okay! I loved the sports bar feel as it's great for a fun casual night out. Will be back for that prime rib sandwich and horseradish sauce!

Yelp
Another awesome day on the patio. We love to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful day. Refreshing and yummy Scottsdale chopped salad and fried chicken entree, as always friendly service. Never can go wrong with this place

Yelp
Another great experience at Famous 48 in Scottsdale. We decided to have the trio dip & warm chips and the Famous 48 skewers. The skewers were chicken and beef with a dipping sauce along with cilantro rice. Both dishes were on the Happy Hour menu 3 to 6. Margarita was also great at a reduced price. Staff was very friendly and got another bowl of chips for us. Inside and out dining with a large bar with many TV's .

Yelp
Ok, this is the epitome of the "neighborhood bar", but done right! Their outdoor seating is awesome (hello fire pits!), but we stayed inside for the evening. It had TV's, but not an overwhelming amount. It just "hit the mark." They had an old fashioned as their drink of the month for $10, and it was fabulous!! Just a great drink. Their burgers were good. Both their fries and tots hit the mark!! Sometimes you want a really good burger with really good fries in a good location, and this was perfect. We had really great service as well. Definitely recommend for a week night when you want a really decent burger!
google avatar

Yelp
We visited for the first time for Arizona Restaurant Week and it was a great deal! Southwest Eggrolls were delicious, we also got prime rib which was a 3.5/5 and the dessert was amazing! They have a great HH menu, which I plan to go back for.
google avatar

Yelp
Highlight were the egg rolls and the cornbread...really good stuff. The fish n chips is good, not great, needs more crunch and am used to coleslaw with them. The fries were pretty great, nice and crispy. Nice spot, great to watch the game and very friendly people. I'll definitely come by to check out their happy hour next!

Yelp
I've been to Famous 48 twice now, and it was great on both visits. I was staying down the street at the Hyatt and it's a very short walk to Famous 48. Drinks: They have a great beer selection and cocktail menu. My favorite is their Snowbowl Whiskey and Coke. It's basically a coke Icee/Slurpee with Buffalo Trace Bourbon. It is ridiculously good, and I never order frozen drinks. I've also had the Old Fashioned. It comes with a big cube and is solid. Wings: They're called grilled drumettes here. I get the Buffalo sauce. It comes on the side. They come grilled and they're on point. I like that they have a half order option, so I can have a few wings and not fill up. Prime Rib: They offer Prime Rib daily and it's really good. I've had it twice and it's been cooked a perfect medium rare both times. It comes with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Service: I had great service on both visits. Final Thoughts: Famous 48 is a great option when in The Gainey Ranch area of Scottsdale. Super convenient if you're staying at The Hyatt Regency. The menu has lots of choices and great drink options as well. I would definitely return to Famous 48 the next time I'm in Scottsdale.

Yelp
THEY HAVE REAL STEAK TIPS! As long as I've known my Bostonian husband, he's been going on and on about how he wants real steak tips like back home. Apparently these aren't the same as beef tips that are smothered in gravy. It's been over a decade and we stumbled across this place when in Scottsdale. The look on his face was enough. They were really good with nice dippers. Along with that we had the deviled eggs which were great too. My kiddo loved the grilled chicken sandwich. They have a pretty sweet happy hour as well. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a few times over the years, and it suits the bill for a neighborhood sports bar and restaurant. The have a large bar and indoor and patio dining with plenty of TVs. I really like their chicken nachos. The beer selection is good and Church Music or Tower Station IPAs are always a good call. On this last visit my friend enjoyed his Athletic Brewing non-alcoholic IPA.

Yelp
Gluten free and dairy light eater. There is a great sports bar and relaxing hangout vibe going on here. I liked how large it was. Sit down tables, high tops, and outdoor seating. Our waitress was helpful and got our orders in quick. I ordered a Cobb salad and a side of fries. My mom ordered the Cesar with chicken. My husband ordered a famous burger. My salad was pretty decent, enough for two meals. But it wasn't exciting. I enjoyed it and a three rating for me is decent. I'd come back for the salad. My mom liked hers but the same as mine nothing exciting. My husband got their notable burger and it was over cooked and just basic. The food was definitely not bad. Just average. I'd have to come back again and try more options. Another small issue I had. As a gf eater it's a pain for me to always ask the wait staff what is gf. Or how can it be made gf. The menu was not helpful. If I was going to order take out from here I would have to ask questions about all the menu. Sometimes I may know but always better to ask. So if the menu online was more clear on how to make things gf or what can be with a substitute then it's helpful for other gf people like me.

Yelp
I don't typically complain. Very disappointed. We are from Casa Grande. The fried chicken was way over cooked and very greasy. I was told maybe they forgot to drain it. Was not worth the wait as the menu stated. My stomach hurts from all the grease. The fries must have been refried. I never had greasy crinkled fries. Yuck!!!

Theresa V.

Yelp
Loved the food. The cornbread with sauces can't be beat. Great casual environment. There was something for everyone in my picky family. We will definitely be back!

Skyler S.

Yelp
Went here last night with friends. Served us water that tasted like bleach/cleaning supplies. So I spoke up just asked them what is going on. Ordered a beer, it's fine. I ordered a burger to eat, didn't end up eating it so gave it to my friend and the server says, the server, with shock on her face says, "oh that wasnt for you?" Come to find out he would wake up at midnight with food poisoning to deal with all night and morning. I'm not saying they are purposely poising people, I'm just making everyone aware that this establishment can't be trusted. This place used to be a vibe and great place to eat and watch sports :( hope they can get it together. Be famous for good reasons!

Yelp
My fiancé and I came to Famous 48 for arizona restaurant week. The deal was too good to pass up!!!! $55 for an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert. We ordered the southwest egg rolls as our starter - there was great flavor inside the actual egg roll - there was a delicious sauce inside with a kick. It had corn, beans, and chicken. It was served with a salsa verde sauce. We both got the fish n chips. The fish was fried perfectly - the batter was a little thick but the fish was nice and moist inside and the tartar sauce was delicious. The side of fries was also good - salted enough and very crispy but soft in the middle. The entree was so big that I only finished about half of my fries. We finished the meal with a skillet cookie. The cookie is thinner but covers a good area. The gooey cookie paired perfectly with the vanilla ice cream. Will definitely be back for a sports Sunday with all of their TV's around! And their food was great too
google avatar

Judith L.

Yelp
What happened? We used to eat here all the time. Love their drumettes and onion rings. The last few times have been spotty. Can't get service to even acknowledge you and seems to have an exceptionally high staff turnover rate. I ordered the prime sliders this time and they came on break-apart dinner rolls with an addition of unwanted bacon. I know they say everything is better with bacon but these sliders were terrible. I asked the waitress if they had changed the recipe and she responded with, "you must be thinking of some other place ". I have had these sliders here many times. Never with bacon and always on brioche buns. Won't be returning any time soon.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and just pass on this place. Within 5 minutes of sitting down I saw a server snap at a manager and then I overheard her say (at the host desk), "We'll, it's not my fault." Turns out she was our server and apparently was overly busy. Not a warm welcome for our first time here. The table was all wet, the booth had crumbs all over the bench seat, and the rolled linen napkins were dirty. The food arrived quickly even though it was crowded but maybe they precook and reheat because nothing tasted fresh. The layout is actually nice. There were 9 large TVs within my view at our table but personally I'd choose O.H.S.O or Twin Peaks over this restaurant since the hosts, servers and bartenders at both are much friendlier and the food is better. No plan to return.
google avatar

Frank V.

Yelp
Always have a nice meal here. Can't go wrong anytime. It's good to reserve a seat in advance if you want a booth but not necessary. The bar high and bar seats are good too. Service is sometimes slow but the food comes out fast. Solid place to bring a group, especially if all of the other places have a wait. I've never gone wrong with a burger here, they are good to the point where you want to eat everything (even if you're full).

Yelp
First time at Famous 48. We arrived around 8:00 and were the only customers in the restaurant or bar. Multiple TVs were on showing different channels and the Diamondbacks game was playing loudly. The food was just ok or average at best. The baby back ribs tasted good but there was little meat on the bones. The fish and chips were good with a nice beer batter. Overall, there was nothing that made the menu or the bar special. There are many other options around Scottsdale.
google avatar

Abby F.

Yelp
I like the drink options that we have and the food is great too. I ordered a salmon dish and it was very good. As are their desserts. Great place to get together. Friendly service too.
google avatar

Nina T.

Yelp
First time here for restaurant week Sunday night - not really busy.. Deviled eggs consisted of 5 1/2 eggs.. with bacon. The grilled salmon was good and hubby said the baby back ribs were good. The BBQ pizza was a bit dry... the worst part was their service. We hardly saw our waitress and we're left sitting there waiting for quite a while waiting for our food or when we were ready for dessert or when we wanted another drink... Maybe the waitress had an off day, will have to try again since there are so many good reviews.
google avatar

Norma S.

Yelp
F48 was amazing I had the fried chicken and Mac a cheese it was so good my friend had the cornbread and the humas the cornbread was fabulous!!! Prices are very reasonable happy hr prices super great !! Waitress was on point.. will visit here again next time we are in AZ
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
NOT AS GOOD AS THE REVIEWS!! Went in when they opened and a pretty good amount of people were there which got my hopes up. Got seated right away. The waitress provided adequate service. I ordered the skewers with all chicken. These did not have great value at $16. Two little skewers of bland chicken with cilantro lime rice. Chipotle blows this place's rice out of the water. Overall, I won't be coming back and don't recommend trying it.
google avatar

Deborah C.

Yelp
A "meh" rating is probably generous for overpriced food and mediocre service. Staff could be more personable and food more palatable. Plus they tend to "surcharge" for minor items.
google avatar

Priscilla K.

Yelp
Headed out for some food and found ourselves with a craving for steaks. This was a great choice! It was that perfect time after lunch but before the dinner rush so our food was prompt and our server was attentive. We both ordered the prime rib, medium rare, and they were both succulent and meaty. I had the creamiest mashed potatoes as a side and hubby had a very cheesy Mac and Cheese. We also split an order of grilled asparagus and they were perfectly charred. Unfortunately, we didn't have room for dessert but we'll come back to try the crumble for sure!

Pat B.

Yelp
Ordered 2 Aperol Spritz. Hardly any Aperol in the drink. Asked them to correct very nicely and they brought a shot of Aperol. Ordered a second and the waiter asked if we wanted the same way. I did. The good news was the drink now tasted perfect. The bad news is the $13 poorly made Aperol Spritz now cost $17. Really? Come on Famous 48. Just make the drink correct and stop with the nickel and diming.

Debbie B.

Yelp
We were spending the night near by and tried Famous 48. He had a beer and I had the house Old Fashioned which was excellent. We shared a full rack of ribs with the macaroni and cheese which we thoroughly enjoyed. My only issue was the sound level was very loud but after all it is a sports bar. We would go back.
google avatar

Georgie M.

Yelp
Famous 48 is a HDTV heavy, sports bar with terrible acoustics. What? I can't hear you! The food however is quiet good. If you've been to Warm Beer & Cold Burgers, it very similar. Of course the owners are the same, which begets the question -what is the difference between the two? I don't know. Famous 48 feels larger and has more TVs I guess. After waiting 10 minutes, I had to point out the free table to the zombie hostesses with iPads. They kept trying to look busy, but didn't notice the free table 10 feet away. LOL What are those iPads for exactly? We started some with appetizers and wine, then moved on for some burgers. Both were good and cooked as ordered. The dessert as very tasty. Three and a Half Stars, "A-Okay."
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
We came her for lunch. It was great! The service was fast and good! We got the fried pickles, babyback ribs which fell off the bone! The BBQ sauce was good too. The Mac and cheese was ok. The bathrooms are very clean and modern. I got a gin, mint, cucumber cocktail.
google avatar

Ta'Brechi H.

Yelp
Sports bar If you're looking to watch the game and eat bar food, then this is your place. Typical fried foods and beers with an abundance of TV's

Yelp
We just arrived in Scottsdale and after over six hours on the road I needed something other than Denny's, Taco Bell and Cracker Barrel that I'd been endlessly passing on the highway. A quick tour through Yelp and we decided on Famous 48 (random factoid - 48 is a shoutout to Arizona being the 48th to join the USA). The food is a slight step above your usual bar fare and includes appetizers (Southwestern egg roles - chicken, black bean, corn, pico, and cheese is notable) salads, sandwiches, pizza and burgers. Along with the egg roll we ordered the Famous Burger (a straight forward burger you can get anywhere), the Havasu Hot Chicken Sandwich and sides of fries (terrific fries!). Overall the food was well executed and we were satisfied. A fine choice given our circumstances (tired, hangry and in need of easy sustenance). The service was fast and friendly and the make a great Old Fashion.
google avatar

Shannon D.

Yelp
We went on a friday nite and no wait, lots of empty tables and nice looking inside so really wanted to like it. The $20 turkey club sandwich was coldcut turkey. For that price i was expecting actual turkey, not a cancer sandwich. The prime dip meat and ribs also tasted to not be made on site. Onion rings dry as the dessert. The food would be okay for half of what they were charging. Spicy margarita was good, though. It's a one and done for us.
google avatar

Kelli V.

Yelp
Service was extremely slow. The food was good so if you are needing something and every place else has a long wait this is a good option.
google avatar

Jeffery M.

Yelp
Food was actually really good. Wife had ribs and chicken, which chicken on bbq plates can be difficult to get and keep moist but this chicken she had was spot on. I had 10oz prime rib. Very good top choice beef. Ambience was a sports bar and grill so not much to say out of the ordinary except that we were outside and it was a bit more enjoyable on the patio then squeezed inside with sports fans cheering and bumping into each other. Service was horrible and lost this restaurant two stars. It was at least 15 mins after seating to get just water even and then it seemed like we were being punished for asking for our drinks and appetizers to be brought out before we ordered entrees. The waitress took another 15 mins and believe me the wife and I look carefully to notice if a server is being overwhelmed by crowd or lack of staffing and it simply was not the case here. We spotted her at least three times sitting at the bar herself just staring at the game or chatting it up with bartender. Made the whole experience bad. But we want to eat here again and give it a second chance.
google avatar

Candy D.

Yelp
Cooper was an excellent server and had awesome recommendations. The famous burger with tots was excellent!

Dennis B.

Yelp
Horrible experience . Came from out of town ordered online ,said it would be ready at 6:55 planned my night according to that . It was ready 25 min early got there food was semi warm still even tho they didn't keep to there schedule . Get back to rental home for week the burger was still mooing . Would not recommend spending 80$ for two people at this place especially if your from out of town don't waste your time or money.
google avatar

Jenifer R.

Yelp
Awesome find. Prime rib sliders were bomb. Fried chicken dish was AMAZING. Patio has awesome seating and misting system. If you haven't been here. Try it!!!!
google avatar

Drew A.

Yelp
This place is a nice bar & grill in the heart of Scottsdale. Our server was fairly attentive, I did have to ask for more ice twice before I got it. Otherwise, she did pretty well. I haven't been out in a while, hence no reviews, so I totally spaced taking photos. I ordered the Scottsdale chopped salad and it was tasty and very large; I left really full. I would definitely come back if I was in the area.
google avatar

Teresa A.

Yelp
First time trying this place. We went for happy hour and I never know how hot or spicy toppings can be so I always get everything on the side. Thank you Famous 48 for doing that for me. Their skillet cookie (pizookie) was what caught my eye from another review and I wanted to definitely try it. It was delicious and I appreciate the staff for trying to write happy birthday for me for my birthday! They said their usual baker/writer was not in and I would have to give them "A" for effort. Would definitely like to come back to try their other foods.
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
Food was great! Place was still fairly new so there were some hiccups with service but we definitely would come back. We tried all of the desserts and loved the apple pie the best!
google avatar

Sandy C.

Yelp
Went for brunch with friends. I did make a reservation for 11:30, walked in and the place was empty, so didn't really need the reservation. Sat in a booth and waa immediately asked received menus & asked for our beverage orders. We all decided to share starters instead of ordering separately. I think this was a good choice, as everything looked good. We ordered the eggs, sliders, eggrolls & cornbread. I only got pics of the eggs. It was all delicious. In my opinion, the restaurant gives off a "millennial" vibe. Probably a good place for drinks/hanging out for a younger crowd at night. I 'm glad we were there early, because by the time we left, the younger crowd started to pop in. Good food, good service.

Yelp
St. Patty's Day green beer, college basketball, sliders, and fun outdoor patio setting! Giddiup! This could have not been the more perfect place to sit a while, enjoy some delicious bar food and watch everyone's college basketball bracket blow up before our eyes! The green beer flowing helped ease everyone losses. This patio setting at Famous 48 was perfect! Sooooo many TVs! We could watch whatever NCAA game we wanted and enjoy all the misery our fellow fans were demonstrating. Now mind you, if you hate basketball last night was not the place you wanted to be. We enjoyed green beer, sliders, ribs, chopped salad grilled asparagus. Just everything was hot, served quickly and by fun wait staff. F48 is located in Scottsdale. Plenty of free parking I think near the Gainy Ranch-McCormick Ranch area. For game night, I would highly recommend this place! Go Zags!

Shelbie P.

Yelp
My coworker and I came over here for happy hour after work and we really enjoyed ourselves. The service was great and our appetizers and drinks were delicious. It's great because it's so convenient to walk over from our job at the Hyatt resort. Will definitely continue to stop over and enjoy what the restaurant offers!
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
I just came from a late lunch meeting at Famous 48. We totally missed the lunch crowd and had most of the patio all to ourselves to enjoy perfect AZ weather and delicious food. We enjoyed the deviled eggs and SW egg rolls. Both were superb. The portions were good for the egg rolls, which are cut in halves. The deviled eggs come with 5, which with 3 people seemed weird. The portions in general are on the large size. My club sandwich was tall and the side caesar salad was on the larger size. The other people at my table thoroughly enjoyed their pizza and sandwich. Attentive staff, great patio with lots of space, solid location and tasty food = I'm definitely adding Famous 48 to my stable of go-to spots.
google avatar

Yelp
We went here twice over the last two days and most everything was excellent. The baby back ribs were $30 for a full rack, but easily made my top five rib list. The meat fell off the bone and the sauce was tangy and delicious. Also enjoyed both sides, with the bacon and corn edging out the Mac and Cheese. The house burger at $16 was cooked well done and tasted great as well. The next day, we split a giant plate of nachos which had all the ingredients you would expect, but these nachos used a cheese sauce instead of real cheese. The added chicken was nice white meat pieces. The only miss the banana bread pudding which used cooked bananas and didn't taste good at all.

Yelp
I enjoyed Famous 48. The food was flavorful. The service was timely, and the drink was delicious and potent. The menu was plentiful. It was a cool atmosphere. The indoor and outdoor seating was nice. I sat indoors and enjoyed the TVs. If I'm in Phoenix again I will eat at Famous 48.
