Vegan comfort food and artisan cheeses with a full bar

"Fancy Plants Kitchen is Lincoln Park’s vegan powerhouse. It serves vegan pastries, croissants, sandwiches, and coffee drinks during the day, and fine-dining vegan meals at night. One of those sandwiches is a vegan Italian beef sandwich and it’s delightful." - Ashok Selvam

"After expanding its hours to the morning and afternoon while adding breakfast and sandwiches to its menu, Fancy Plants Kitchen is closing. Owner and chef Kevin Schuder announced via Facebook on Tuesday. Fancy Plants Cafe in Lakeview remains unaffected. It’s a sad state for vegan restaurants which loses an ambitious dinner option that provided the community with more than the junk food meat substitutes that chains offer. Their last day will be Sunday, September 10. Schuder tells Eater that he’s open to new opportunities, to perhaps give a seasoned restaurant company wanting to open a vegan restaurant some advice. Stay tuned." - Ashok Selvam

"With a handsome interior and pretty outdoor patio, Fancy Plants has a lot going for it but nothing upstages the food, crafted with true attention to detail. An extensive drinks menu is also impressive. Definitely try the Housemade Artisan Cheese Plate, rich, complex, and cultured nut-based cheeses with perfect accompaniments." - Marla Rose

"On Grubhub, Kevin Schuder’s vegan restaurant assumes the personality of FP2U, a fast-food joint that serves plant-based versions of all the favorites — burgers! fries! chicken nuggets! even a reuben! — thereby proving once and for all that vegans enjoy their junk food, too." - Shanti Chu, Eater Staff

"Fancy Plants Kitchen, a vegan restaurant in Lincoln Park near DePaul University, has pushed through the pandemic since opening in August. Though it was a bumpy start with staffing and securing a liquor license, owner and chef Kevin Schuder is feeling comfortable and is trying out two new gimmicks: a 'convert a carnivore' night with a special menu and a vegan happy hour." - Ashok Selvam
