New Restaurants and Developers Are Gentrifying Chinatown Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Seen by many as the site of Chinatown’s recent commercial transformation, Far East Plaza has hosted Chego and other notable tenants; George Yu, who is president of the Chinatown BID and vice president of the investment company that owns the plaza, acts as an unofficial gatekeeper overseeing incoming and outgoing tenants and disputes claims that newer businesses are displacing legacy ones." - Cathy Chaplin

Chill place to hangout for 40+ years for me and where I did my first property management internship under far east. Used to be a place for all the streetwears and hangout for old kids like us. Now it still a trendy place but more cluttered to suits everyone needs in a mall well positioned in orchard road. Many shops selling luxury watches, street fashion, delicious old & famous restaurants, cafes, facial/hairdresser/tattoo and even massage. Very old mall but still very enjoyable few hours here always when in orchard area.

Far East Plaza is an old shopping mall. There is plenty of shops and restaurants. Mostly hair salons, facial beauty, Eyelash extension and many other shops and a food court opened few months ago... Nice selection of menu..and of course 711, KFC...

This seemingly old mall is just so pleasant to be in. It's full of people, yet it gives off a peaceful atmosphere. The mall is packed with a variety of shops, and the food options are amazing. You can find something to suit every taste and preference. Despite being crowded, the mall never feels overwhelming. Instead, it's a place where you can relax and enjoy your time. The combination of shopping, dining, and atmosphere makes it a great destination for anyone. Whether you're looking for a specific item or just want to browse, you'll find something that catches your eye. The food stores are especially noteworthy, offering a range of delicious options to satisfy any craving. Overall, this mall is a hidden gem that's definitely worth visiting. It's a place that will leave you feeling satisfied and eager to return. With its unique blend of peacefulness and activity, it's a must-see destination for anyone in the area.

So many shops that sells everything from watches, shoes, clothes, bags and so much more. Here is several small eateries, hair dressers, nail salons, gym etc. You can also get a tattoo here, new soles on your shoes among other things.

Nice mix of clothing stores, nail parlours, luxury watches, foot reflexology and some affordable eating places on Level 5. Very good chicken rice and cheap fruits on level 5.

A walk down memory lane coming to Far East Plaza, having been here often as a schoolboy. Awesome to know some of the outlets are still around like the chicken rice restaurant upstairs! Lots of affordable and competitively priced options for fashion, hair, and nail care here. Eatery options aplenty too. Short walking distance away from Orchard MRT only!

It's been four decades since they first opened and I remembered coming here since I was a kid. Through the years they passed through many phases and brought back many memories. Today though it is an aging mall, it is still an old favourite with many interesting stores and good eats. More than half of the stores are fashion, hairstyling and nails. Though it's also becoming sort of a used luxury items and watches hub. Be careful if you're out shopping for used luxury watches, a bit of due diligence and you will see some of the watch stores had bad reviews or press. Just be sure you know what you are buying. Food wise, the ayam penyet, Thai food Nana and Krapow, Nanbantei, and the Chicken Rice you can't go wrong.

Google
You want to buy luxury watches, this is where you go. If you want luxury bags, or jewellery or other branded goods, you will find plenty of options there. If you are in need of a manicure, pedicure, hair spa or hair treatment, you go there. In short, you want a good deal, you will probably find one there

Yelp
A popular teenage hangout area, "Level One", ironically located in the basement, has many shops selling fashionable clothings and footwear. From the first to fifth floor, you see a tonne more of clothings, accessories, beauty shops, although they are less "trendy" than those in the basement. I found out that the higher you go, the cheaper things get, most probably due to cheaper rent. Shopping experience here is a little like shopping in Hong Kong/ Thailand, except that it is cleaner, less cramped, and walkways are bigger. There are some restaurants in the basement too, but you pay "Orchard prices" for the food there. Go up to the fifth floor, and you get more affordable chicken rice, yong tau foo, etc. Manicure/ Pedicure services are also aplenty, but as I mentioned, gets cheaper as you go higher up. I frequent the fifth floor for manicure, and it can go as cheap as $5 for express manicure. FEP can get a little dingy at times, especially if you wander into corners, but if you keep within the main row of shops, you should be fine :)

Yelp
Back in the day when I used to live in Singapore, this place was a fucking dump. It was kind of dirty and pretty much a cesspool full of shops selling cheap, crappy shit (although it had a decent food court upstairs, which is still there for the most part). Then came the renovation and to this day somehow this mall has managed to maintain some semblance of dignity. The lower floor is now a series of hipster stores catering to young folks (then again this place always did lean towards younger shoppers for the most part). Whenever I'm back I still enjoy taking a quick stroll downstairs to see what kind of interesting items (like t-shirts, bags, shoes etc) that they sell there. The main floor floors are a mix of standard clothing shops along with some random stores that sell all sorts of nicknacks, toys, video games and other items. Upstairs there are still several food stalls that folks can eat it. It's impossible to miss as the smell of the food easily wafts to the lower floors. There's also a few other stores that you can get your hair done etc. All in all I'd say it's not a must-see for visitors, but it's still a decent, clean place to kill some time or buy some shit you don't really need.

Yelp
"I-I-I'm huntin', looking for a come up, this is f!@#ing AWESOME." No, there aren't any thrift shops in Far East Plaza. But with so many stalls and the variety of tenants, it's a great venue to wander around and find some hidden gems. You can find everything from swimsuits and booty shorts to legit ball gowns and designer knockoffs. Need to get your nails done or your hair did? Good luck finding a place because there are so many to choose from! Some definitely look better than others, so choose wisely. There are makeup shops, jewelry/accessory shops, mobile phone case shops, beauty supply stores, tattoo parlors, massage parlors, tailors, and of course, food & beverage establishments. I truly believe The Sushi Bar (#04-28) has the best value for money chirashi in Singapore, and you can join the long queue tucked away on the 4th floor to see for yourself. A lot of the stalls have dainty, Korean style clothes which I'm not too much a fan of, but occasionally you'll find stalls with some edgy or trendy threads. My latest discovery is Yacht 21 (#04-124A) a preppy brand that's locally designed. I love their line because their clothes are light and meant for year-round summer weather! Only got $20 in your pocket because all those atas Orchard malls took your money? You might be able to stretch those dollars here! May the odds be ever in your favour. :)

Yelp
Although I'm way past the median age of people that frequent this mall, I still enjoy going down to Far East Plaza to 're-live' my youth and check out what the latest trends are. Love that there are a fair number of independent shops here selling unique one of a kind pieces, and at the same time lots of shops that bring in cheap clothing from China and Thailand. There are also some that are linked to online stores and let you try and have a look at the sizing and material being used before purchasing. Lots of manicure and hairdressing salons around here as well - and as they target the students, prices are usually better than elsewhere in town.

Yelp
The changing tenant listings of Far East Plaza are always a good reflection of the cultural trends among the younger crowd. I remember coming here to while away my afternoons when I was much younger but few of the shops then still exist today. Aside from the chicken rice stall on the top level, I still come back here to shop from time to time. There are a couple of independent designer shops mixed in with street style from Korea as well as the cheaper mass produced stuff from Thailand and China. I always make it a point to drop by alodge on level 3 because I like their collections that focus on simple lines with a hint of deconstruction. Another interesting place to pop by would be func deco on level 2 where they have a ncie eccelctic mix of clothes, bag, accessories and curios.

Yelp
I only come here for Qisahn on the 5th floor. They have the best selection of video games on most platforms at decent prices, and a pleasant and knowledgable staff. Thus the stars. Aside from that, this place is a little bit creepy. It has very little traffic, and a few people who just seem to linger in the corridors and stare. If Qisahn were to relocate, I would have no reason or desire to return to this particular shopping centre.

Yelp
Like many malls developed by the Far East Group (eg. Lucky Plaza or Far East Shopping Centre on Orchard), Far East Plaza is among the older, less visually attractive, and more downmarket shopping malls in its neighbourhood. Like Lucky Plaza and definitely unlike other Orchard Road malls, this one is more functional than aspirational. Actually, of the three Far East malls in the area, FEP is the most 'diverse': stores for teenagers; many nail shops and hairdressers; a shop selling good-value crocodile bags and belts; lots of decent clothing alteration stores; a second-hand bookstore; several second-hand watch stores; even some decent eateries. You used to have to pay to go to the loo, but not anymore, although they did upgrade the toilets!

Yelp
Far East Plaza is the shopping centre of my youth, but it has changed mightily since then. I kinda like how the shopping centre straddles old and new - the basement, or more accurately 'Level One' is an 'edgier' and cleaner small-shop style of shopping teenagers fancy. Upstairs on levels 2-4 is where you find a whole array of tiny fashion shops, some so narrow they're only one-person's width. You could totally get lost here and find some hidden gems too! I enjoy just poking around to see what's up here.

Yelp
Bangkok has platinum mall, Shanghai has Qipu Lu and Singapore has Far East Plaza. Yep, this is where you can get a vibrant selection of trendy (and not so well-made) clothes at affordable prices, though perhaps not as cheap as about five years ago. There is an interesting mix of vintage, korean-inspired, hong kong-inspired and pure street wear within the walls of this five-level shopping mall, as well as some cheap eateries and hair salons on the top floor. I usually stick to a standard route around Far East Plaza that brings me to all the shops I want while skipping the ones that tend to stock boring and aunty-ish apparel. The stores along my route includes Func Deco, A Lodge, Spellbound (level 3), exhibit, My Room and the Attic (level 4). These stores feature products that are more interesting and quirkier compared to the rest of the mall. I don't visit level one and two because I haven't found anything good there in years. Make sure you try the famous chicken rice on level five before you leave!

Yelp
Great Indonesian food on the 4th floor- Yusof Arni's. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Yelp
best bang for the buck on souvenirs to bring home to friends and family. typical Asian outlet mall with all sorts of different shops and dining options of your local variety.
