A Main Street staple near MTSU for decades, Far East serves a broad Chinese menu alongside Thai dishes. Covered by Murfreesboro Pulse and noted by locals for generous portions, quick service, and a real sense of place for students and alumni alike.

I ordered the chicken with broccoli and my husband ordered the sweet and sour sauce. I have never seen such water clear sauce in chicken and broccoli. Literally did not taste anything. I do not recommend. I only gave them 2 stars because the sweet and sour chicken was decent. Such a shame.

Our first time dined at Far East. They have a mix combination of Lao/Thai and Chinese food. The restaurant very pleasant and nice decor. I had Lad Nah Noodles with veggies delicious and savory. The portion size was generous. My husband had salt and pepper shrimp with rice. The shrimp was crispy and tangy. We love both dishes. We will definitely order these dishes again for our next visit. Just found our new favorite place to enjoy. The service was very friendly and efficient.

I do not normally review food places, I have better things to do with my time, but hand was forced on this one. DO NOT get your Chinese food from here unless you prefer to eat what seemed to be frozen dog food. I wouldn’t even feed this to a dog, it went straight in my trash can. You cannot call this lo mein. I tasted it even though I didn’t want to and believe it or not it tastes worse than it looks. If I could rate it zero stars I would, unfortunately I have to at least click one to make a review. No seasoning, clearly frozen “veggies”, and I’m not completely convinced that the meat was real (straight rubber). And even though the food seemed to come from a frozen box it was not even cooked all of the way. Even the fortune cookie was stale, talk about a complete disappointment. Save your time and money and eat somewhere else :)

Placed order on Line for pick up, brought order for the pepper steak home when I received it the gravy was all water. It wasn’t thick and brown like it was prior order called and spoke with the manager. I did not ask for a refund. I just wanted them to give me a another dinner at a later date, she told me that I had to come in today for a replacement meal although I explained to her that I cannot drive at this time. This is why I have someone else to come in and pick it up so she wasn’t willing to give me replacement dinner for A later date and for this reason, I think that’s support service. I give them a one star.

From the moment we arrived at Far East, we knew we were in for a treat. The ambiance was inviting, with a perfect blend of modern elegance and cozy charm. The soft lighting and tasteful decor set the stage for what turned out to be an exceptional evening. The menu offered a varied selection of dishes, each more enticing than the last. We started with the spring rolls, which was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. For the main course, I chose the Pad Thai, and it was nothing short of perfection. The dish was cooked to perfection, and the combination of flavors was truly remarkable. My dining companion opted for the Lad Nah, which was equally impressive and had us both raving. What really stood out was the service. Our server was attentive without being intrusive, providing excellent recommendations and ensuring our glasses were never empty. The staff genuinely seemed to care about our experience, which made us feel valued as customers. The Thai Tea was the perfect way to end our meal. It was indulgent yet balanced, leaving us with a sweet taste in our mouths and smiles on our faces. Overall, Far East exceeded our expectations in every way. The combination of delicious food, outstanding service, and a lovely atmosphere made for a memorable dining experience. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic meal. We will definitely be returning soon!

Google
Far east restaurant seems like a great fine- affordable and tasty. I love their delicious stir fried vegetables noodles and pepper steak taste good as well. I’m sure I will return and people there are so friendly.

Google
As of July 1st they are under new management. The extra large egg rolls are now normal size. The cream cheese wontons are now crab rangoon. Few changes here and there. Menu is now more what you'd expect from a small take out place. Some of the items seem to have increased in price. The staff is different, but they are very friendly. We ordered a few things to try out. The fresh rolls has fresh herbs and were very tasty. They let us try their coconut ice cream. That was excellent. Overall happy with the food and service.

The food was great! We all got different things, and everyone loved what they had. The service was just as amazing! They were so genuinely nice and constantly made sure that we had everything that we needed. I can’t wait to go back! I hardly ever leave reviews, but my family and I had a great night and dinner here. Definitely check them out!

Yelp
"Just go back from the Far East..." I have eaten here a few times, but always at lunch - when you get your food cafeteria style from the steam table. Good selection, but a steam table is a steam table - dependent on how busy they are as to how fresh your food will be. Can't say I have ever had a bad experience, but what I didn't know... In the evenings you order off of a menu. There is a MUCH larger selection than the lunch specials. I had never been at night and was expecting the same few choices. There were eleven of us - friends/family was getting together to celebrate a birthday. Turns out - this is where they always celebrate birthdays - a family tradition for years - much like ours is usually Omni Hut. As in both these places - the décor probably hasn't changed a bit in decades - that's what helps make it a tradition. Great dining tip to know - I assume they offer this to all diners and aren't partial to them since the parents have been coming here since they met a MTSU - let's just say - some time ago. (Hint - they were celebrating their sons 29th birthday - you do the math). Oh - sorry - the tip: They have a dinner for 2 that includes 2 of any of the $7.95 entrees, 2 eggrolls and 2 bowls of soup all for $17.95. It's is listed on the menu, but only shows like 4 entrée selections. You can have the entrée either with noodles or fried rice or half and half. Noodles are ramen done right and taste great as does the rice. You get more it appears with the half and half. It saves a couple of bucks. Their General Tsu's chicken is phenomenal as is the roasted pork. The pork is SLOW roasted in a Thai sauce (gravy). The sauce poured over the rice is delicious! Egg rolls are vegetable and proclaimed favorite eggroll ever by my wife. Make sure you ask for the house made hot mustard - the sweet and sour sauce is good for dipping, too. I ordered Chicken Seguan which was billed a spicy, but wasn't really. If I get it again I will ask to make it much hotter. Is it rundown as mentioned in prior reviews? Yeah - so... The wallpaper has definitely seen better days - even peeling in places...so There have been obvious leaks in the roof that have left stains in the tile...so I would have to say the most off-putting part is how it looks from the outside. "Don't judge a book by its cover" would apply here... Is it dirty? I think run-down and outdated was being used interchangeably with dirty - it didn't feel dirty in the dining area...there again...so Go to your made from fieldstone restaurant with shiny glass and chrome, tile floors, framed artwork and rich stained wooden booths and tables - there still probably going to give you a paper napkin - we got cloth! As most places - you pay for the décor by overpaying for food - we got out for less than $20 a couple - not counting tip of course - so they can't afford new wallpaper...

Yelp
We wanted some good Asian style food, and I was craving some Pho. We had a party of 7, we came here and there was absolutely no wait. The I ordered pho beef, steamed rice, and 3 chicken egg rolls. My sister got pho chicken, my S.O. Got Thai fried noodle. We didn't wait long, the egg roll was very good, I think it had noodle in it, but it was very light and crispy. My pho bowl was HUGE! I got food with it because I was thinking it would be Small like the pictures. The pictures don't do them any justice. Needless to say, I ordered way too much food, yet again. But the pho was extremely tasty! Everyone at the table highly enjoyed their food. Hands down the best Thai food we've had since visiting Tennessee! I would highly recommend trying this place out! The food wasn't heavy at all

Yelp
Ordered food to go... drunken noodles, pad thai, and wonton soup for lunch. The dishes had good flavor, good portions and good pricing for what you get. Definitely will be coming back here to try more items.

Cathy C.

Yelp
The food was fresh and seasoned well. The restaurant was clean and the employees were very friendly.

Yelp
EXCELLENT RED CURRY!! The staff left a wonderful impression. They were so nice and welcoming, and excellent at making you feel right at home. Lucky for me, I'm walking distance from this glorious mom-and-pop joint, so I'll be coming here as frequently as possible. If you're a student, you CAN USE YOUR STUDENT DISCOUNT HERE! Happy dining.

Tiffany G.

Yelp
BEST noodles in Murfreesboro. Their crab rangoons are also great. It's our favorite and a staple for us. They're always fast and efficient. The food never disappoints. And those egg rolls? YES. Also best in town.

Eddie K.

Yelp
Wife and I stopped by for supper and have to say it was outstanding, she had the General Tso chicken and I had the Pepper Steak both were hot and fresh. The Hot and Sour soup was delicious it lives up to it name. Service was great, we'll definitely be going back.

Yelp
Food was by far the worse thing ever! I ordered an egg roll and general chicken with fried rice... as soon as the food came to my table the rice had this awful smell to it that after a bite I couldn't stomach it any more... the general chicken was just basically sweet and sour chicken mixed with the general sauce... and the egg roll was literally nothing but cabbage... and then if you want a drink it's $2.50 and all you get is a can of soda no refill... NEVER WILL I RETURN!

Yelp
We were asked if we wanted to order from the menu or from the buffet area. We chose the buffet to try a few different entrees. The term "buffet" is a misnomer at this establishment. When we got our lunch bill, we saw that they charged by the plate and charged extra for egg rolls, etc. When I questioned if the total was right (no buffet price), I was told that yes, they charge per plate. Not happy to have lunch for four people cost $90!!! We could have had a better lunch for far less at any number of nice restaurants here in the 'Boro. We won't be back.

Yelp
I've lived in Murfreesboro for the last 18 years and tried Far East today for the first time. Very delicious! I'm looking forward to eating there often!

Mark H.

Yelp
Our food was very good. The service was great and very friendly. We will definitely return. The environment was nice and clean. Thanks

Natasha E.

Yelp
One star is too much for this establishment. Don't believe those rave reviews. Food was super salty. Ordered large wonton soup amongst other things. It consisted of a pint of broth with small lumps of dough with unidentified bits of something inside, that had absolutely nothing to do with real wontons, as well as the egg rolls with just cabbage, not even a carrot in there. We went to this place based on a bunch of great reviews. They definitely would not apply to our meal.

Yelp
I always call in my order, pick up, and enjoy. Today, I brought my friend to the restaurant for lunch. I've raved over the veggie egg rolls and fried mushrooms. We get there, take a look at the buffet, then decide to order from the lunch menu. My friend orders the shrimp lo mein, and tells me she doesn't like how the noodles taste. I call the gentleman over to inform him. He starts yelling , and I immediately say to him his yelling is unnecessary in an appropriate tone. He responds, "The food is how we cook it...do you want for free?" I told him I didn't want anything free, but wanted my friend to have something she liked to eat. After he left the table, we decided to go to the register, pay, then leave. While paying the bill, I told the guy that I'd never experience the type of treatment EVER, when I ordered take out. I was extremely embarrassed by you yelling at my friend and I, as his behavior was inappropriate while patrons looked on. I am a small business owner and know customer service is key to your business thriving. I will not return to Far East Restaurant to be mistreated again!

Amy A.

Yelp
Great food and choices to select from the menu. Enjoy eating in or take out. Always good.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in Murfreesboro. The ladies who work there are so sweet! The food is great and comes out fast, and it is extremely low-priced. Tofu is not on the menu, but you can sub for any meat, which I like to do. However, m the pork is awesome so I get that sometimes. They have the best red curry I've ever had anywhere.
google avatar

Yelp
I went in for a meal and came out with so much more ! They are truly under new management they were extremely nice and welcoming and also they also gave us samples of the new menu while we waited! And the food is delicious!!!!

Reginald G.

Yelp
There are 2 places to get GOOD Chinese food and this is the FIRST place you should go. Great food, huge portions and most of all GREAT customer service.

Jeremy H.

Yelp
Hands down best Chinese food in Tennessee!!! Better than any buffet or take out spot. You will not be disappointed!!

Reginald W.

Yelp
Had the roast pork, General chicken, mixed vegetables, rice and noodles, egg roll, spring roll, and sweet and sour chicken off of lunch buffet. Food was hot and fresh. Only complaint was noodles were a little dry. Love eating there. So glad the former owners are back and the food taste as good as it used to.
google avatar

Yelp
They have changed owners again. Not the same recipes. Generals chicken hard and could not even chew and the roast porlwas Not the same.

Yelp
So, so good. Never mind the low ratings you might have seen on Yelp. I've been eating at Far East since they first opened and I can tell you the food here is incredible. Mr. San came here from Thailand years ago and opened this place back in the early 80s, I believe. It's one of the first two "Chinese" joints to appear in this town. I like it for lunch. They have a small serving line from which you can choose 3 items for like 7 bucks, I think. Order more if you like! And, boy do they load your plate down. Now, let me be clear about something... I go to Far East for 3 things, and three things only. If want something else, I'll go somewhere else - as I am not interested in any other items there. Here's what I love, love, love: The Roast Pork. Out of this world! The recipe is unique to Far East and folks from all around visit this place just for a taste of it. Make sure you ask the person serving you to pour some of the juice over your rice! I always get heaping sides of "Lunch Noodles" and Fried Rice - my other two favorites. See you soon, Mr. San!
google avatar

Johnny M.

Yelp
The chicken fried rice was extremely mediocre. Had an okay flavor but it was not fried at all. Boiled rice and pre cooked chicken pieces with half cooked onion slithers. Never had Fried Rice like it. Don't mind if I never have it again.
google avatar

Luke M.

Yelp
Finally a place that has good green curry without breaking the bank. Amazing customer service as well

Erika B.

Yelp
I am always scared to try new things and I have absolutely fell in love with this place. From the outside you wouldn't guess the amount of culture you are about to take in. I was allowed to taste test before I ordered and when I tried it the meat melted in my mouth I was not disappointed at all. The service is great the people are so kind. I would HIGHLY recommend!!!

Ana G.

Yelp
I went for shrimp lo mien and it was the best lo mien I've ever had. The staff was nice and the food didn't take a long time to come out. It's a small place but many customers seem satisfied, which I don't blame them because the food is good.
google avatar

Yelp
Far East has been a staple eatery in Murfreesboro for over 30 years. I have enjoyed it over the years, but never as much as I did last night! The food was superb!!! Everyone's food looked so good, I had to "taste test" everything! It was literally the best pho, Sweet and Sour chicken and Red Curry Chicken I've ever had. Bar none. They are under new management, run by a sweet family! Seriously, give them a try! You will love them!!
google avatar

Shawn D.

Yelp
My new Go To Thai restaurant...Far East Cafe is under new ownership and it is the hidden best Thai food in town. I have yet to have any of the Chinese dishes but I can vouch that I have had many of their Thai dishes and it is the best in the Boro that I have tried. If you want great Thai food at a very economical price with plentiful proportions then give Far East a try. Pad Kee Mow (Drunken Noodles), Tom Yum Soup (Unbelievably Awesome), Red Curry and Pad Thai that is the best in town. I don't want to say that it meets the requirements of the quintessential hole in the wall Asian restaurant, but don't let the exterior turn you away. The inside is clean and the new ownership has taken great care to provide a clean atmosphere to dine in. Everytime I eat at Far East now I can't wait to go back and try something else and so far it has all been so good.
google avatar

Shaala M.

Yelp
I've been going to Far East Restaurant for 5 years now. However, last week I tried calling in and no response. I ended up driving there because who knows maybe their having phone issues. I pull up to find that Far East is under NEW management and ITS AWFUL. I was directed to a buffet line, which if they continued their old management, they would've let me order off the menu and wait. So, I went through the buffet line and even with some of the same items on the menu the food DID NOT taste the same! HORRIBLE! Far East, WHY?! Go to Oriental Express, there right up the street and there food is 10x better.
google avatar

Heather G.

Yelp
To whoever recently bought Far East - you have ruined it! I have eaten at Far East for years and now its over. Rice is awful, you mixed cooked chicken with sauce right before putting it in my to-go box...my bag was full of sauce by the time I got to eat it. No egg rolls at lunch time? Really poor service - so disappointed. We have a good run Far East - farewell!

Rilyn M.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend order takeout from here every week! It isn't super expensive and honestly tastes great. They are also always super polite and always have my order ready early!
google avatar

A P.

Yelp
This was the worst Asian Food experience I have ever had. The sweet and sour soup I had must have been a week old. The place is old, dark and dirty! Some of the food served was simply not edible. the rest was so-so at best! I was invited to go to this place and that will be the last time for me.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Eek! Methinks not! The noodles are nothing more than Ramen noodles soaked in soy sauce. Any of the take out Chinese places one mile down the road are so much better. There is one on Middle TN, another on Memorial and another off of Lascassas Hwy. Some people say it's good, but I just can't get into it If you only have a day in Murfreesboro and want good Chinese/Thai, please don't judge our restaurants on this one.
google avatar

Alexander M.

Yelp
If you love great Asian cuisine then this place is a must try. The environment is decent but the food is a true winner. The ingredients taste fresh and the dishes have that home cooked Chinese feel. I really like the customer service. The people there are really nice and make you feel at home. They don't use that process junk you find at most Asian dinning areas. The sesame chicken I had was huge chunks of fresh chicken breast. I only wish the servings of rice were larger, because I usually order 2 scoops of rice to get me by, but still definitely worth It. The only problem I really have with this place is that it's hard to locate. If you blink you'll miss it. Still it's worth finding this hidden gem.

Melissa T.

Yelp
The last few years every time I eat here I swear I won't go back; today sealed the deal. The noodles taste like Chicken Ramen from a plastic bag. The generals chicken is stringy, tough and not edible. The rice is bland at best. They are close to my office so it's easy take out BUT.......not worth even that effort.

Renee M.

Yelp
The menu has totally changed and it's quite expensive now. I wanted egg drop soup and they don't have it anymore so I had to get wonton soup. I wanted Chinese, and there is now only about 4 Chinese entrees. A pint of soup, an egg roll and I can't even remember which Chinese entree I selected came to $30.00 with to tip. I won't be returning. If the food had been really outstanding it would be worth the price. I got a to go order in the evening so I don't know if they still have the lunch buffet.

Callin S.

Yelp
Some of the best curry in Murfreesboro for sure, great service, great pricing, and great food! They even gave us complimentary shrimp chips!

Tian F.

Yelp
Who commented the food here is good must have never tasted any authentic Asian dish whatsoever.

Mike H.

Yelp
If you haven't eaten here in a while, you have to try them again. New owners have cleaned it up and the food is incredible!

Holly S.

Yelp
They have changed owners and the prices have gone up but still delicious!!! Also the walls are green now instead of red and gold hahah!! Maybe they updated a little!
google avatar

Spencer B.

Yelp
I found out about this place from locals it has apparently been here since the beginning of time it was incredible the staff the owners the food and the people that showed up! This is the only Chinese place I would eat out at in Rutherford county!

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Far East has been one of my favorites for over 30 years. We ordered to go for dinner tonight and the prices have increased quite a bit, the portion sizes have gotten somewhat smaller and they now charge an extra $2 if you get fried rice or noodles instead of the steamed rice. My husband has always gotten the roasted pork. He said this is pretty good, but not the same or as good as it used to be. I had spicy chicken and broccoli stir fry and it was fine. I ordered noodles with mine and received fried rice instead. Not a huge deal, but I was looking forward to the noodles. 2 1/2 stars because it wasn't horrible overall.
google avatar

Danyell B.

Yelp
Nastyyyy as h*ll! Lo mein noodles were dry as hell with no flavor! The rice and chicken had a wierd smell to it and didn't taste how it should have! This was my first time ordering from this place and it will definitely be my last!!!!! The Food was just horrible!!!!! Runnnnn far away from this place!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
This place has great food. They have a lunch buffet with your choice of two entrees, fried rice or noodles an egg roll and a glass of tea for just over $8.00. I used to eat there all the time when I was in college and I still stop in every chance I get.

Teresa B.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite asian restaurant, the spicy beef, the cashew chicken, the roast pork. I found out today the cashew chicken is the same sweet basic chicken at most chinese places, it used to be simple chicken, onions, and enough spice to make your mouth burn, no spicy beef and the roast pork was so tender it fell apart. No longer, the pork was tough and very dry. Very disapointed. I wont be back. WHAT HAPPENED???

Marianne W.

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday to get our dinner and was shocked to see that evidently they have changed ownership again. Our favorites "spicy beef" and "noodles" were not on the menu any longer, and the General Tso's chicken did not look the same. Prices had increased also. Why did they have to ruin a good thing? Won't be going back.

Pam F.

Yelp
It's not pretty outside never had been but the food was wonderful until this last ownership change. This is not the good Far East food we know and love. So sad I used to love the egg rolls but now they have a lot of black pepper in them. I asked for the sweet and sour chicken that used to be the big strips that sat with the egg rolls but was given General Tsos and told that was the sweet and sour chicken. We won't be back. I wish they still cooked like when Tam owned it
google avatar

Cayce S.

Yelp
This place has awesome food. Not pretty to look at on the outside but the people that work here are very nice and take care of you.

Yelp
Great new owner with terrific recipes . Highly recommend you give it a try! Ask for the MTSU discount!

Yelp
Loved this place when I was in college. I always loved the roasted pork and noodles. Yes they look a lot like ramen noodles but they are sooooo good. Sweet in flavor and like nothing I have ever found anywhere else. I'm giving it 5 stars because the food was always fresh, good and reasonably priced. I have tried every Chinese spot here in MD and nothing comes close to the food that I crave from here.
