Where to Buy the Best Bread in Philly | Eater Philly

"This is where to go for dense, old school Sicilian-style bread out of a wood-fired oven. Does the wood fire matter? It does. The rough-hewn texture feels like access to a Sicily (and Philadelphia) of another age." - Dayna Evans

Google
Faragalli's Bakery is a must-visit for anyone who loves a hearty Italian bread! My family and I have been going there for over 50 years, and we've never been disappointed. Their Easter bread is a must-try. Their bread is excellent for dipping. Bernadette is always friendly and greets you with a smile. Highly recommend!!!

The tomato turnovers are delicious and unique! Rich and full of flavor but made without cheese. I bought them to serve with lentil soup for out of town guests and they were a great hit.

My husband and I LOVE Faragalli's bakery! Since moving to the neighborhood, it has become a habit! We love their fresh turnovers. (I like the chocolate, my husband likes the spinach). They are really kind, friendly people too! It is a small storefront with so much South Philly classic character. Definitely worth the trip!

Google
The best Italian bread in South Philly. Large & small rounds and long loaves, seeded and unseeded baked in wood burning stove by local family. Whole wheat loaves available on Fridays. Once the baker gave me loaf straight out of the oven - amazing!

Family Business. 3rd Generation. Fine People who sell Quality products. A Warm Friendly Atmosphere permeates the Establishment. Great Bread.Home made dough is available. Easter Bread is Without Peer! One of the Last Brick Ovens left in all of Philadelphia.

Google
Best bread in Philly Disregard any of the low star reviews - this place is third generation authentic old world moved to new world Italian bread making. It’s famous for the family recipe “loafs” - that means the large long bread which you can see in the picture. The original recipe didn’t have seeds but if you like seeds the seeded loafs are nice. Yes the bread has a hard crust. It’s not made for grandmas without heavily glued dentures or those looking to satisfy a sweet tooth. If you are looking to power up before the championship softball game so you can jack a homerun 400 feet into someone’s window this is your spot. The bread is intended to be dipped in “gravy,” spread with a bunch of butter, or dipped in “sauce” or “dressing” (think salads, Turkey drippings, or bruschetta). The thickness of the bead nicely sops up all delightful savory flavors. Btw it’s closed sundays and Mondays and cash only

I always get bread but their loaves are great too! cranberry, banana chocolate chip, peach, apple, and a moist pound cake. Yum!! Can't forget their fried dough, and the cherry bites and apple bites too.

Bread is super hard. Not many varieties

Yelp
Their powdered fried dough is sold only on Saturdays and you better believe that they are sold insanely quick! I came at 10 ish and there were only two left. The dough consistency is perfect with the powdered sugar on top. I love supporting small businesses who are true to their roots and ingredients while staying affordable. The young lady working upfront is always there and a hard-working one! When you want to skip out on chemically made bread at the store, come check this place out!

Yelp
Only tried the sesame Italian bread. At first, I was concerned the bread was moldy. The taste was unusual. I did not enjoy the sourness, especially combined with the smoky odor on top. It felt like an attack on the senses. I forced myself to finish the rest, but wouldn't recommend it. Otherwise, very nice texture: crispy on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside. I can see why people like it. Just not my cup of tea.

Yelp
Best bread in the city, been a customer for years. So delicious I caught my boyfriend breaking off hunks and slathering it with butter at 3am.

Yelp
Everything tastes like cigarette smoke, which is what it smells like when you walk in. Disappointed.

Yelp
It's a small bakery at the corner of 13 and Reed. Not many bread options. Seeded, not seeded, round Italian bread. There are some pastries, bread, donuts, and heated fried dough. Bread is cheap $2.50 for long bread. Very nice lady. The Italian bread unfortunately is very hard. The crust is thick and hard, the bread itself is on the dry side. Chocolate pastry is ok, not much filling.

Yelp
Amazing bread! The rounds are delicious and the pizza dough comes out perfect every time. This bakery has been a staple in the neighborhood and our family loves their bread. Kind owners too.

Yelp
Faragalli's bakery has the best Italian bread and pizza dough in Philly! It's delicious.

Yelp
This is a delicious dense peasant loaf that is perfect for dipping or dunking. Having it once you will be able to identify it at your favorite restaurants. I was at Kitchen Consigliere(delicious dinner also) last night in Collingswood NJ and I knew immediately that they got their bread here. It's that good and it's that unique-I could have eaten a whole loaf. When you are ok with splurging on bread you should make Faragalli's your choice - it's that good.

Yelp
This place has the BEST Italian bread in the City... They also make the BEST EASTER BREAD you can buy! Been eating their breads for 46 years!

Yelp
This local bakery is a few blocks from my apartment and is one of the best Bakeries in town. Delicious bread and incredibly low priced. It's a tiny little shop on the corner and they have weird hours. If you are in the area when they are open, I would highly recommended stopping by! They only have a few different selections of breads but all are freshly baked. Definitely worth the trip.

Yelp
Peeked into the kitchen, and it was nasty looking. They only make bread, which I've never tried, because each time I tried to buy something they had closed early. Clientele is rough, and the owner is nice. (If you want the good, authentic, old-world type of Italian bread bakery that has a cleaner looking kitchen, try Villari Brothers Bakery.)

Yelp
Best bread this side of Italy, warm friendly atmosphere, outstanding service. The quality of the bread and rolls is exceptional and the prices are very reasonable.

Yelp
Small, old-school bakery with very limited selection. When we went they were out of the touted donuts and cinnamon sticks. All they had were loaves of bread and small bags of cookies to choose from. We tried a loaf of the bread and found it to be pretty mediocre at best. Maybe one too many visits to Metropolitan has unknowingly turned us into bread snobs? Anyway, the next time we are in the area we will see if Faragalli's has any donuts or cinnamon sticks and will give them a try. Addendum: ignore the donut and cinnamon stick comment. They don't make them here. Apparently the place that has them is Frangelli's.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Does not follow COVID guidlines of wearing masks while preparing or delivering food. Incredibly rude. They also use pre-treated wood in their ovens, which is incredibly toxic. Avoid like the plague.

Yelp
I love this place. Small neighborhood bakery, specializing in Italian-style breads, baked on premises. Surprisingly wide variety. I love braided Italian with sesame seeds, that chewy loaf with pointed ends, and whole wheat (on Fridays only)! I'm neither Italian nor Catholic, so their many holiday specials are new discoveries to me. Retail business plus they supply a couple restaurants. Reasonable prices. They're opposite the SW corner of Columbus Square (aka Passyunk Square). You'll see Mrs. Faragalli sitting in the front window. UPDATE: From the Phila Inquirer: "Marie 'Maemoe' Faragalli, 86, owner of the venerable Faragalli's Bakery in South Philadelphia, which lays claim to the only wood-fired open-hearth oven in Philadelphia, died of breast cancer Sunday [June 29, 2008] at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital." Great story about the family and bakery ( http://www.philly.com/philly/obituaries/22802524.html ).

Yelp
Absolutely delicious bread with a rich, unique flavor and very chewy crust - perfect for sandwiches. Also pretty inexpensive at $5/dozen for big (4"?) dinner rolls. A few almost grievances: 1 - Out of every dozen (I buy a lot) - at least one is burnt/cooked to an inedible point 2 - If the lady's not at the counter, it's usually a grouchy dude. I'm trying to support your family business, guy, cheer up. . 3 - They don't have defined closing hours, so they might be open til 2, 3, 4... who knows? And they're not there Sundays - when I'd really like fresh bread. EDIT! Just got 4 dozen DEEELICIOUS looking rolls this morning. The super nice lady Bernadette behind the counter told me they were placing bets on who the crabby guy I was referring to is in my review! We had a laugh. Love that place... crabby overheated dude or not. :)

Yelp
Old-time classic little corner bread bakery. I love their hearty round or long loaf bread which gets served in many restaurants city wide. Get it plain or seeded. Perfect for dipping in olive oil or butter or just by itself. They have fried dough (add powdered sugar if you like) and other tasty specialties too!

Yelp
This family still makes real Italian bread for Manny of the best restaurant in Philadelphia. It is made by hand and baked in a wood burning brick oven. you get so much flavor in the crust and the receipt has come from the old world and is still made with love.

Yelp
The most perfect Italian bread in the city. Chewy crust, dense moist crumb with the right amount of airiness. Very Italian, small bakery attended by pretty much just the locals. Great deal too, four sandwich rolls here (perfect for a real Philly cheesesteak) were $2. Molto benissimo!

Yelp
I was driving in S Philly during a two day layover this past summer and found this bakery. I bought several loaves of Italian bread and brought them to dinner at a friends house. It was outstanding, nice and crusty and the right amount of chew. Nice people with a great product. The owner gave me a piece of cornbread on the house before I left. Just authentic people who care about their customers and who take great pride in delivering a quality product. I bought the long loaves, btw.

Yelp
If you liked the bread at Little Fish, this is where they get it. I'll be there. Soon. Yum! Dense, flavorful, the right amount of chew....mmmmmmm

Yelp
I had a loaf of fresh bread from Faragalli's for the first time today. I ate the whole loaf without any olive oil or butter. It's that good. Great balance and flavor.

Yelp
Faragalli has delicious bread with a nice denseness and a great crust. I love that they do not slice the bread for you. I usually get the high hat rounds and this is the only bread that taste even better after a few days in the fridge. Just slice a few pieces, pop in the toaster and onto sandwich heaven. Once you have this bread you will never forget it. When I am in a restaurant I always recognize Faragalli's bread - it is that unique. Great family run business.

Julie B.

Yelp
Simply awesome. There are no words to describe their donuts and cinnamon sticks. And the prices are great. Go now! Oh, and the staff is super nice too.

Mary E.

Yelp
I make hubby stop here on his lunch break once a week and buy several loaves for me at once. I have a freezer in my basement so I cut it up, ziploc it and pop it in oven to warm up again when needed. It's delicious even after freezing/thawing. My kids are addicted to their breads! I dip them in garlic olive oil. So yummy!

William P.

Yelp
Since currently not working in the City, when I do have an excuse to travel in town, Faragallii's is the reason for my excuse. The bread is so distinctive that when eating out, I can identify their bread. It is second to none, crusty without being doughy, firm dense texture and no air holes in the bread. While a trip from the Valley Forge area, the visit is clearly worth and justifies the excuse to visit the City.

Rose B.

Yelp
By far, this bread is the best in the city. Customers come from the suburbs and stock up. All you need is a freezer! But, there is nothing like it if you happen to come by and the bread is coming out of the oven right into your arms -- especially this time of the year. Family owned and everyone is helpful and nice.
