40 Years of Growing Grapes and Making Wine with Tom Farella

"Rooted in the Coombsville AVA, this family vineyard and winery began when Frank Farella bought a 56-acre site in 1977 that many didn’t consider grape-growing friendly; vines—Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay—went in, the first wines followed in 1985, and, as Tom Farella puts it, “It was always about preserving the place.” Today it’s planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; about 80% of the fruit goes to more than a dozen revered Napa wineries, with the rest becoming roughly 2,000 cases under the Farella label. Tom’s winemaking chases age-worthy balance—acidity, tannin and fruit—eschewing the early-2000s temptation to let fruit “hang,” always asking, “What defines ripeness?” Farming follows a minimum-inputs, maximum-outputs approach akin to lutte raisonée: modern tools are used judiciously (even a little Roundup from an ATV at the right time) to reduce passes, compaction and pollution, while he argues that strict organic or biodynamic regimens can unintentionally increase inputs. After 40 years in Coombsville, he believes “less is more”: winemaking is stewardship of terroir, an almost anthropomorphic relationship with the vines, and in his self-contained, backyard-like operation, that simplicity is the ideal." - Erin Brooks

Wow! What a stunning winery with wine as perfect as the views! Hidden in the Coombsville AVA, this Napa winery is reminiscent of earlier Napa. No bells and whistles, just pure old school. The wine educator Rod is the best in the area. The winemaker Ryan is also a wealth of knowledge. We spent an afternoon in this little slice of heaven. We will be back!

Yelp
We came for a tasting at Farella and had a terrific experience. Ryan gave us a tour of the vineyard and walked us through their process. He was engaging, and we tasted a variety of delicious wines. Their Sauvignon Blanc was refreshing and perfect for a summer afternoon. I really liked their 2014 Merlot and their 2019 Farella ALTA. Overall great experience.

Yelp
This my favorite winery. Everything is estate vintage. Cabernet sauvignon is fantastic.

Yelp
Tom Farella is the real thing. Some people go to Napa just to spend a lot of money on wine. You won't find Tom putting high prices on wine just to make you feel secure about your purchase. Tom doesn't want to grow his business, he just wants to make a few cases of wine himself each year and share it with those who appreciate the European style of wine--smooth for an almost daily tradition vs the big alcohol taste. Tom took 3 hours out of his day to sit down with us for 3 hours to discuss everything from his values--what he puts into his wine. Don't come here expecting fancy labels, marketing clubs and a lot of Yelp reviews. If you want to see fancy vintage race cars then go to a big, famous winery and join the crowd. If you want authenticity, you may want to stop by Farella-Park.

Yelp
Great spot. Located in the quite country of the Napa Valley, the Coombsville. Small production winery with fantastic Syrah, Merlot and a show stopping Sauvignon Blanc for $15! Unreal deal! This place is cool. Running creek, views, oak trees, and a laid back atmosphere. You need a wine tour guide to get to this place. Not open to the general public. I highly recommend this one. Barrel tasting was a blast.

Yelp
We came here looking for an off-the-beaten path winery experience in Napa, and that's what we got. It was a lovely afternoon - a private tasting with the winemaker, including barrel tasting, while his kids played in the yard. This is the place to go if you want to meet the person behind the wine, hear about the process, ask questions, and get away from the usual winery crowds.

Yelp
I almost didn't want to write a review. I'm afraid that it might get too popular. His wine is excellent, and the setting was beautiful. You need to call ahead and make a reservation, but I'll tell you it's definitely worth it to make a stop here. It's hard to see the sign from the road, but as you drive up the path to the winery, you suddenly realize how tranquil and private the experience will be. As I walked towards the door, Farella himself shook my hand and welcomed me and my friends to the winery. He shared his various wines, which were all excellent and well priced, and toured us around the building. If you want a true Napa experience, stop by Farella's and you'll spend a couple hours enjoying great wine and great stories.

Yelp
We've been to Farella Park vineyard on 3 occassions. The first was with a small group of friends (total 7 of us) and we loved it. The experience held true to every idea that I thought wine tasting should be....it was like spending a couple of hours drinking, learning about the wine and simple conversation with friends. The coolest part was that the winemaker, Tom Farella, was the host! First impression is everything, but every return visit has yielded the same experience.

Yelp
This is what Napa should be about, learning about winemaking!! Tom spent 4 hours with us, telling about the heart and soul that goes into his wine. The vineyard is gorgeous and the wine is fabulous. The most interesting tasting I have been on.
