Farina Bakery

Such a special place! They recently expanded and there is now lots of space to sit and enjoy some coffee, tea, cake, pastries, or macarons. They have the best macarons in Portland hands down and are my favorite place to get cake by the slice, too. They also sell whole cakes! They have wifi so you can sit and get work done while enjoying your treat.

Stopped in to reserve a 1/2 dozen cupcakes for a small celebration the following day. Staff were friendly and efficient, gave the attention to detail as though I was placing a large order. At pick up the cupcakes were packed in a container that kept them pristine all the way to destination. Got a mix of salted caramel, lavender vanilla, lemon, and strawberry chocolate. Each one delicious but lemon was outstanding, delectably tart and sweet. Highly recommend Farina, for top notch customer service, and stunningly good cupcakes.

Only street parking available Friendly staff. Ordered glazed cranberry hand pie, white chocolate peppermint scone, and marionberry pop tart. The pop tart was my fave!

I knew when I opened the door and smelled that lovely sugared aroma that this shop would not disappoint. I purchased macarons and a slice of the vanilla almond raspberry cake (a very generous portion, btw). I shared with the young woman servicing me that I was visiting from NC. I didn’t realize until later that she added some extra macarons for me! So kind, thank you! The desserts were wonderful and I especially enjoyed the vanilla and blackberry rosemary macaron. Thank you for a memorable experience!

I don’t get to come here often due to the drive and location but always feel like a kid in a pastry store when I do. I originally found Farina when moving to Portland and looking for Macaroons. While their Macaroons are heavenly (and keep me coming back for more despite the 30-45 minute drive) - they have a great assortment of other pastries and goodies too! Price wise they are a little spendier but I’m okay paying it to not only support the good work that the employees of the bakery (and in some cases their artistry of what they make like wedding cakes) but also the taste/quality. Taste is huge! They do have in location shopping available as well as work with companies like door dash and grub hub if you want to have your driver pick something up. Due to the nature of this business their mornings are typically the busiest and sometimes run out of key items before 11-12noon. So if you have your heart set on something order ahead or go in early. I also love that they change their seasonal macaroon offerings and keep that section lively. Great job Farina and thank you 🙏🏻 😊 ❤️

Got the chickpea and sweet potato hand pie 🤌🏻 so delicious! Flaky dough, flavorful without being over spiced. Perfect lunch snack! Can't say how much I appreciate that they offer *multiple* savory options. Friendly staff! Appears to be predominantly a production site with counter service, which is fine by me! Have not tried something I did not love. By far, these are the most delicious bakery treats I have tried! They put care and detail into their treats. Always something unexpected: like the coffee aroma and crunch in the brownies and the crust on the cheesecake....the BEST!! The pop tarts are devine. Seriously, please enter a baking contest and win some major awards. You deserve it!

Raced to get to the bakery before closing, we drove from Ridgefield Washington, arrived 15 minutes before their 7pm close time on a Saturday. When we walked in, they didn't seem happy to have us there, in fact they seemed rather annoyed. No greeting, no smiles, the lady gathering items we were ordering wouldn't even make eye contact. It was so off putting. I just want them to know that every customer visit should count. Should've been grateful we decided to spend our time and money coming to visit your business. We spent 40 dollars on treats and they were good, but the piss poor interaction left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe they were exhausted, maybe they had a bad day, not sure what the issue was, but we didn't have good experience. There are so many amazing bakeries in our area, we won't be back to Farinas. Unfriendly and some not so sweet vibes.

Last Friday I stopped in to visit Farina. Upon entering I realized I had tried their macarons previously at Elephant's Delicatessen. Their shop feels like it's mostly a working bakery and I didn't see any interior seating area (although it looks like they own the adjacent building also so maybe there is seating and I didn't see it because I was so distracted by the pastries). Cupcakes are my nemesis so I had to get some. I don't love their buttercream (seemed butter heavy and flavor light) and their cake was very light and spongy but lacking depth of flavor for me. Overall they weren't my favorite cupcakes (but @hungryhero has my heart there). That being said, their orange cranberry cupcake was a stand out! The orange flavored buttercream was light and delightfully orange flavored. The inside of the cupcake and delicious, tart cranberry that offset the orange cream fantastically. It was original for a cupcake and definitely a standout. Their macarons were quite good. They were a nice size and achieved the marshmallowy goodness that is expected with authentic flavors coming through. Especially good were the pistachio and apple cider. The raspberry was good, as was the chocolate but did not beat out our favorites at @laprovence. The woman who took our order was not unfriendly but did not particularly engage with us. Overall I would stop in for their original macaron flavors in the future.

Stopped by here on a whim as I was passing by and suddenly had a craving for a sweet treat. The chocolate cake was good but the cupcake I had was amazing. I will definitely be coming back. However, I wouldn't say anything special stands out from the many other bakeries in town.

I ordered a cake for my father's birthday. It was ready on time, looked beautiful, and was well packaged. Even after a 2 hour drive to Newport, a day in the fridge, and a 2 hour drive to Seaside, followed by two more days in the fridge (plans kept changing), the cake was still great, and the packaging held up. Also picked up a marionberry pop tart as an impulse buy; glad I did. It was amazing. Service was friendly and the website was easy to navigate for online ordering.

For such a large space, they could do more with the interior to make it more comfortable and inviting. Their baked goods are delicious and presented well. Unfortunately I will not be back as I found the customer service to be cold and unfriendly. I hope they were just having a bad day or something cause if this is the level of "friendliness" they normally are.....then damn maybe just hire a front of the house person who is good with customer service.

Macaroons are tasty but the staff was not friendly. I will go back and try again because they were tasty.

5 stars for some of the best macaroons I have ever tried. They could sell these in Paris, they are that good. 2 stars for the almond cake with white frosting. Flavor was good, but dry cake is a turn off. Service was friendly and prompt.

We stopped by here on our way home, and we will definitely be stopping again. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable. They were very kind to my young son, and answered some good questions. The decor is very sweet and the food is delicious. We are excited for the expansion. This is a great local spot. It is on Hawthorne which is great and they usually have parking relatively close by.

This place is amazing! I ordered a cake from here for a family members birthday. The cake I ordered was the pistachio raspberry, and not only was it beautiful, but extremely tasty too! Their frosting is nice and light, and the cake just melts into your mouth. When we picked up the cake we received friendly service and are looking forward to visiting again.

This was such a nice New Years Day treat! The macaroons were awesome. We go at a lemon and a pistachio. Two of the best I've ever had from anywhere. We got a lemon cupcake. That was alright. The frosting on top wasn't overly sweet so that was a plus. We also tried the caramel mocha cupcake. That one was incredible. Easy 10/10. It was filled with gooey caramel which made it that much better.

You just must go... You'll thank me. Try the macarons, they are the best I've ever had. Don't stop there though.

Ordered a couple cake slices to go. The icing had broken on one of them, which was pretty unpleasant to taste. However, the flavors were good and, based on other reviews, this doesn't seem to be a common issue. We'd come back to try this place again.

I guess this is not the bakery to order a custom cake from. We go in for their slices all the time. I can't eat dairy so I always get their vegan option. Lately they have only been doing chai which is too spiced and unappealing to my taste so no cake for me. My husband called a week in advance to order a whole vegan vanilla cake for my birthday. They told him no. They will only bake the chai one... Wow. What a disappointment.

Macarons are difficult to get right. Farina Bakery's macarons are more than worthy and quite good

A friend of mine got me macrons from this bakery and I'm not lying when I say they were the best I've ever had and I've had them all over the world. I was in love! I can't wait to go back and try all of the things. What a great gift idea. Instead of bringing wine to dinner parties, I'm going to start bringing a set of 6 macrons for the host to enjoy.

I think this place is pretty solid. Their pastries are darker then most. They are baked longer and so the crust is really flaky and a bit nutty. There macaroons are on point with a crusty outside and that chewy inside. They use bold flavors that compliment a nice cup of coffee.

Wonderful and delicious vegan cake! Made my birthday special. You are our new go to bakery for special occasion!

Magnificent Macarons! The outer shells of the airy meringue sandwiches were smooth and crispy and packed with the chewy flavors. We received a gift box of a dozen assorted Macarons and all of them tasted amazing! The packaging is also so pretty! Next time you visit someone, take this box of Macarons with you along with the bottle of wine.

Had the pop tart. Straight I believe the woman's name was Abby she was very caring and sweet. Ambiance was peaceful. Noticeable right when I walked in.

I ordered a dozen cupcakes for my boyfriend's birthday but wasn't on-site to receive the order. They were very communicative, order arrived on time, and the cupcakes were delicious!!! Caramel mocha and chocolate raspberry flavors were a hit!!!

I went in here twice on my visit to Portland staying off Hawthorne. Once I went in and left because the woman manning the counter/bakery completely ignored me. There was no one else in the entire place and she didn't even lift her head up- no "I'll be right with you" or anything. I looked around waiting patiently before leaving. I figured I caught her on a bad day so went again another time and the same thing happened! She was so standoffish. I finally said something to engage with her and asked her opinion between two cake flavors and she rudely told me they were different flavors so couldn't really compare. I got one anyway desperate for dessert- a slice of the raspberry almond cake. It was ok but the frosting was pretty thick and buttery, would've been nicer to be more fluffy/moist. Decent prices though.

The Vegan cakes are good! Not my favorite frosting but it's still pretty yummy. My go to is the vegan chai carrot cake

Love, love this little business on Hawthrone! The place was small but full of characters with mismatch tables, antique lamps, and colorful background. There wasn't many seating area so if you want to settle here for a bit make sure to come early (My favorite is the window sill table!). There selection of baked goods and pastries may not be vast but they're VERY GOOD. I split a Savory Chickpea and Sweet Potato Hand Pie and a Everything Bagel Gallette with a friend and they're phenomenol. Warmed, the pastries were crumbly. The Chickpea and Sweet Potato turned out to be a great flavor combination, perfect for the gloomy weather. The Gallette certainly reminded me of an Everything Bagel. The creamcheese fillling was well-balanced and not overwhelming. I certainly will be back to check out other goodies here!!

Meringues!!!! go. Spend three dollars. It's worth it. You will get to the car and then go back inside and buy five more. Pinky promise

Went here for this first time yesterday because I'm a huge macaroon fan and theirs were probably the best I've ever had!! So crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside and the flavors are amazing! Will be going back for sure!!

I want to start this review by first thanking Farina Bakery for pulling off the impossible - not only delivering on our last minute order of 240 macarons, but also doing so with incredibly kind customer service. For some backstory, we had ordered custom cookies for our wedding over a year in advance. Fast forward to 4 days before our event and the order fell through. After some furious Google/Yelp searching, we came across Farina Bakery and sent a desperate online query for a last minute order. Thomas kindly responded promptly and after checking with the team offered a solution to meet both our order quantity and timeline. In the span of about 24 hours, they had everything ready for pick up and even took the extra step to keep all of the cookies frozen so that they would be perfect for our Sunday wedding. As for the macarons themselves, I would be remiss if I did not mention that they were absolutely delicious! The outer shell was delicately crisp, while the first bite had the perfect amount of chew, and the filling was the burst of flavor that completed the sweet treat. If you find yourself in Portland, I highly recommend that you check them out - whether you're looking for 1 macaron or 240!

I saw a cake from another bakery that used fresh strawberries and lemon, and my heart was set on it for my birthday but that bakery wasn't taking orders. We looked around for a bakery that would use fresh berries, and Farina did not disappoint. The frosting is SO good, the cake was a perfect texture and balance of flavors. Everyone was so friendly as well. I grabbed a hand pie for a family member who doesn't like cake and they said the pie was great too. We will definitely be ordering from this bakery for future holidays!

Macarons are delicious but the social media team is very rude. I asked them if they wanted to collaborate after purchasing a large box of macarons and they were very rude about it. When I asked them to treat me with respect because I am a paying customer they blocked me on instagram. I'm guessing they blocked me so I couldn't tell the public about how rude they are. Well, thank goodness for yelp. I'm so sad because the macarons are so good but how can I support a business that blocked me on instagram just for asking them to treat me with common curtesy?

The Earl Grey shortbread cookies were amazing! What a wonderful place. I'd love to stop in again.

Their macaroons.. like, what in the actual f is in those recipes, because you couldn't possibly choose a favorite. And they add those teeny sprinkle balls to some of them, which gives it just something a little extra. This place is everything.

Awesome macarons! My BF and I have been obsessing over macarons, waffling between making them as a pandemic baking challenge or just buying them and calling it good. We chose to purchase and Farina was the place we found to get them from. Happy we did! Great flavors--my favs were the salty caramel, raspberry, and lemon. Oddly enough, raspberry and lemon generally are not among my top flavors, but this time they were. The lemon tasted like fruity pebbles. Check them out! They also deliver.

My sister had her wedding cake done here and the whole family loved it. She choose strawberry creme and I could have eaten the entire cake. We decorated the cakes in babys breath flowers but even without them, the cakes were beautiful. I highly recommend this bakery if you're needing any cakes, worth the price. They know what they're doing.

These people are perfectionists. Not a place for a big breakfast, but for a little mid-morning snack it doesn't get much better. I had a mixed berry hand pie (turnover), and my wife had the cinnamon roll. Mine was made from a substantial puff pastry with a nice filling. The roll was not a Cinnabon - not monster-sized but a great cinnamon flavor and dusted with streusel. Coffee was great, and is a bottomless cup. I have to come back and sample the macaroons, they look fantastic!

My step sister got her wedding cakes from Banquet(?) that is out of Farina- they were really good so my finance and I got several samples to test for our wedding cake. They gave us cupcakes and we thought for sure the lemon raspberry flavor was going to be our favorite so saved it for the last- it was so hard and dry it was our least favorite of all the samples. It is impossible to get an accurate idea of what a cake will taste like from a dry previously frozen cupcake sample. Bummer

Service was amazing. Warm and casual atmosphere. I'm primarily gluten free but occasionally I break the rules . I was getting my RecumbentPDX repair and found this place by chance. I had their gluten filled cinnamon roll and if it's wrong I don't want to be right. Amazing! Laura was incredibly nice and very helpful. Thanks!

I was the wedding planner for a wedding where Farina provided two cakes and a macaron tower. Beyond making delicious desserts, I was really impressed with the team's communication before and on the wedding day. I could tell they take pride in their business and they were a pleasure to work with. Recommend!

I cannot say enough amazing things about Farina Bakery to really capture how great my experience was. First, everything was easy. In a handful of emails I was able to discuss design, flavors, order, and pay. I worked with Destini and she was so fun and professional the entire time. We had the cake delivered to Guardian Games for my husband's birthday and it was perfect. The cake was so delicious and looked amazing. Our guests all had to take pictures of it before we cut into it and everyone said it was the best cake they had ever had. Can't wait to order from Farina again.

Great customer service from Stephanie and the team to pull together a cake for my micro-wedding. Brought in my own flowers to have flexibility in choosing my own color pallet on our pink champagne cake and strawberry buttercream.

One bright spot in these strange times is that you end up finding great new things when COVID forces you to change your plans. Farina is definitely one of these finds. We were sad that Jaciva's, who made our wedding cake, had decided not to reopen, since this was our first anniversary back in Portland since getting married here some years ago. This meant finding a new bakery that could meet a pretty high standard. To start, I think Farina's reponse to COVID deserves some praise. The ordering process was super easy, and pickup was well-organized and felt very safe. Everyone was super friendly and helpful, and the handoff was pretty seamless. When I picked up the cake, they also had some fresh pastries I decided to buy on a whim. This was a great decision, as they were very much a step above the standard Portland fare. The poppy seed muffin especially was light and fluffy, and the flavors were wonderfully balanced. As to the cake itself, I don't feel I can really review it fairly--we didn't eat it when we had planned to, and it sat in the cooler for longer than it should have. I hope the kind people at Farina won't be offended to hear this--something that carefully put together certainly deserves better! That said, when we did get around to eating it, it had held up remarkably well, despite traveling about 200 miles in a bouncy car. All in all, I don't think we could have found a better substitute for our anniversary, and I really appreciate the care Farina is taking to keep everyone safe. I do feel bad that we sort of ruined their cake. On the other hand, we have a birthday coming up soon, so...

100% A+++ We are in LOVE with the food in this bakery. The chickpea handpies are beyond tasty. This is our bakery of choice when we have birthdays or special events for a reason. Thank you for being such a remarkable offering in Portland.

I only had the chance to get some macaroons because at the moment I was not attracted to the few bakery items available. I really wanted to try a slice of cake since I heard they are sold by the slice on weekends but I didn't see any for sale. The macaroons were puffy, firm, soft, a bit of crisp, tasty. No complaints and will buy again. The sea salt caramel is a rich buttery cream filling - I personally really like that! I tasted real bits of pistachio for the pistachio flavor. A few more flavors to go for an updated review. $1 extra for the box. I shouldn't have gotten the box because it's not a gift and will become a waste. (I kept my Louie Bottega macaroon box because of the sturdy hard cardboard, foil print and cute design). It's a decent size place that can seat 20+. Large open kitchen. It's on Hawthorne, so parking is tough! Not to mention Farina is only opened til 2 pm, so Hawthorne is busy with the coffee, breakfast and brunch people already. I hate driving on Hawthorne bc the road is narrow - and despite the lack of parking....I will come back for more macaroons and hopefully some cake if I'm ever up in time to make it by 2 pm.

We placed an order for cake, macarons, and cupcakes with matching color scheme for my son's first birthday. They were easy to work with, very pleasant over the emails, and the treats were delicious! Especially the chocolate cake with Marion berry jam (we constructed the macaron tower out of styrofoam cone & toothpicks )

Everyone at the bakery is amazing. Great customer service. I have had personalized cookies done and they have always exceeded my expectations. I absolutely love their macarons, they are delicate, sweet and elegant. This is by far the best bakery in town. I highly recommend

Firstly, I feel guilty for leaving it so long to leave this review as, Laura and Farina Bakery were so helpful when other bakeries were so difficult to work with and the end product I received from Farina was amazing! My wife and I live in Vegas and decided to go to Portland and Seattle for her 30th. My parents wanted to surprise her with a cake. We were leaving Portland a couple of days before her 30th, so planned to order a cake to pick up in Seattle, however it appeared no one in Seattle wanted our Business, as they were so difficult to work with, making me feel as if I was an inconvenience for wanting to order from them because I'm not in town, or were absolutely extortionate! After exhausting my avenues in Seattle, I thought i would contact some bakeries in Portland and just pick it up a couple of days earlier. After emailing a few companies, Laura and Farina Bakery replied with so much enthusiasm for my project! I wanted a small (as it was only for me and my wife), two tier cake, themed on the opening credits of Sex and the City as my wife had only just discovered the show and was obsessed with it. After a little back and forth of suggestions of how to get the desired look, we agreed on a design, they sent me an invoice and I was good to go. When I went to collect the cake, my wife loved the quaint premisses and girly interior of the bakery/cafe. The staff greeted us with excitement, with a real sense of pride in their work. Being English, they knew who I was before introducing myself, which made the experience even more personal and the surprise better for my wife, as they presented the cake to her, without me having to say "i'm here for the birthday cake" in front of my wife! We left the flavors of the cake to them, as they are the experts, and were extremely happy with the Pink Champagne Cake with Strawberry Buttercream and Vanilla bean for the other layer they chose! My wife also got a couple of complementary macarons too, which she loved! One last thing to add; The Price. I've just checked the email exchange and couldn't believe how little I paid! Absolutely amazing!!! I won't put the price on the review as I know cakes can be pretty custom and vary massively with slight changes, however, I paid around 25% of what one company in Seattle quoted me! Thank You again Laura and Farina Bakery for helping to make my wifes 30th so special... I look forward to visiting again when next in Portland!

Service was so friendly and the macaron selection looked so good - fun flavors including seasonal ones, and a bunch of other baked goods that looked good. Also beautifully decorated cakes on display. My husband really liked his hand pie and oat bar, but I thought the macarons were overly sweet, stopping just short of sickly. The filling is really light and creamy, which is lovely, but the flavoring is too subtle. The passionfruit flavor is kind of there, but it's like LaCroix - a whisper, no sharpness. Same with the other fruit flavors and earl grey; you can tell it's something but you can't identify what it is because it's barely there. Chocolate cherry is a great concept but just tasted like a nice milk chocolate. Buttttt they give sample macarons - it's test flavors and the broken ones that can't be sold. Love that! This bakery is so close to greatness.

Where do I start? The exemplary service or the amazing food? I suppose the most important aspect is the food, so let's start there. I walked in and was overwhelmed by amazing smells. I immediately asked the nice woman behind the corner what this beautiful smell was, and she told me bacon. They were in the process of making their savory hand pies and a crucial part of these is bacon. Wow. I'll have to come by later in the day to try one of these because I can only imagine. I was there for macarons. My mother-in-law told me she'd never tried one and I'd sampled one of Farina's at Zupans and knew what I had to do. I told the woman why I was there and asked for recommendations, and boy I got what I wanted. She picked her six favorites and filled the box. We then of course picked our own macarons for ourselves because duh. Here's where the service went from good to great: she offered to write the flavors on the side of the box (in the most adorable handwriting ever, I might add) for my mother-in-law to follow. That was perfect. We will never remember the flavors. Here's where the service went from great to exemplary: we started talking about how we churn our own custard-based ice cream and constantly toss out egg whites, and given what a macaron is, they have the opposite problem. She volunteered to give us egg yolks whenever we needed them. WHAT?! That is so cool. In the past they apparently had relationships with other restaurants to trade yolks and whites, but that isn't happening at the moment and they always have extra yolks. Not only would this be doing us a big favor, but it also shows that she cares about what her customers say, and likes her job. There was no 'move it along I just want to be done with this.' She was happy, committed, and great to work with. The storefront is small, just 5-6 tables with only one or two open at 9:30am on a Saturday, but that seems suitable. I love that all the baking takes place in an open kitchen feet behind the register. I was about 10 feet and no walls from a woman filling hand pies. I always include a note about service in my reviews. I like good service, but this place goes truly above and beyond. Not only do all of the baked goods look and taste amazing, but the service is bar none as well. New favorite bakery. Farina: keep doing what you're doing. It works in every way.

I swear Farina and her staff are the the absolute sweetest people in the macaron making world. Not only are her $2 macarons are a steal, they are some of the most delicious ones I've had in my life! Who needs to go out of town for Laduree when you've got Farina? I came in on a Saturday morning for a box of six: - Meyer Lemon - Marionberry Chocolate - Sea Salt Caramel - Vanilla Bean - Chocolate Hazelnut - Blueberry And every. SINGLE. ONE. was AMAZING. Perfect texture, and nails it on each and every flavor. Make sure that your macarons are consumed within 24 hours (and refrigerate them if you aren't eating them immediately!). I would definitely highly recommend a box of Farina's macarons as the perfect gift for a girlfriend, mum, mum-in-law, etc. - you just can't go wrong.
