2023 Vancouver MICHELIN Bib Gourmands

"Farmer's Apprentice is a true neighborhood gem. This tiny space with rustic appeal brings people together over innovative dishes like shrimp-crusted striped bass with XO sauce or radish and Sieglinde potato salad with chili-miso-tamarind vinaigrette. Fresh sourdough bread is baked daily— served with chicken asiento, it's a can't-miss. Local produce is feted, as in kale rapini with lush vadouvan butter, accompanied by lemony labneh, smoked pickled raisins and toasted hazelnuts. On weekends, Chef Alden Ong switches gears and serves Basta Barbecue at lunch, inspired by Tausug-Filipino cuisine. The 63 Acres beef cheeks with buttery lettuce leaves, nouc cham and sunchoke kimchi will have you planning a repeat visit before your plate is clean." - MICHELIN Guide

Had a wonderful meal at the Farmer's Apprentice. We had some pleasant cocktails, but really enjoyed the super fresh, farm to table feel and tastes. The King Salmon was cooked perfectly, and had some wonderful accompaniments w sauce compliments. The Lamb portions were also very tasty with excellent saucing and greens accompanying it. Even the nice sourdough breads (almost essential to sop up some of the delicious sauces) was excellent, and it came with a unique coffee butter as well! We will come back someday to enjoy the far again!

Love this restaurant! Asian spices and flavors used to create innovative and one of a kind dishes. The flavors are strong, really stand out with each bite. Yum, so good! Fresh ingredients to create the perfect dishes! Service was friendly and fun!

FANTASTIC FOODIE FIND This casual yet sophisticated spot has so much to offer. They have a chef’s menu and an a la carte menu to suit your appetite. We’ve dined here twice when visiting this city and have loved each experience. The chef mingles flavors and textures in some really outstanding ways. We were delighted with the rösti sandos and crispy mushroom rice from this most recent visit. Our cocktails were well-crafted and the gin n tonic was especially wonderful. Service is approachable and knowledgeable. They could use some more comfortable seating and getting their doors fixed to up their guests’ comfort.

Google
Had an amazing dining experience. When it comes to fine dining, I get extra picky but this place delivered on most part. The egg yolk & rosti sando was perfect. I had zero complaints. Crispy mushroom rice had a really good texture/flavour. Although it was a bit too strong on seasoning/salt and hid a bit of the natural flavour of mushroom. If they tone that down, it'd be perfect. Lamb chops were also one of the best I had. Cooked right with good amount of flavour and the sauces complimented the meat well. Overall, I'd be back again and personally would give 4.7/5! Thank you for an amazing night :)

My friend and I dined here recently. We ordered the sweet potato sourdough bread, the beet salad, the celeriac dish, the cauliflower dish, and the pear dessert. The food is delicious, the portion sizes are small. The pear dessert is amazing. The bathrooms are clean. The celeriac dish is OK but we preferred the cauliflower dish. We recommend ordering 3 to 4 dishes to share for two people because of the smaller portion sizes. The servers are quick and attentive, and the food is delivered quickly. Our bill was $48 plus tip each.

Mostly vegetarian or vegan options. There was only salmon for non-veg option. We got beetroot salad, rainbow carrot and something rice. All with a lot of distinct flavour and texture. Relatively small sized, but both of us were full to our surprise. Service was good. Atmosphere was good. Gives a cozy neighborhood restaurant vibe, unpretentious.

Farmer’s Apprentice is a charming little gem in Vancouver—small but warm, with an intimate, rustic vibe that feels like a hidden treasure. The flavors here are truly unique; every dish feels thoughtfully curated, bursting with fresh, seasonal ingredients that shine. If you love inventive farm-to-table dining, this spot delivers on creativity and quality. That said, portions lean petite, so don’t come *too* hungry—generous servings aren’t the focus here. While the price point feels a bit steep for the quantity, the quality and artistry of the food do justify it for a special occasion or culinary adventure. Perfect for foodies seeking something different, but be prepared for a premium price tag. Would return for the unforgettable flavors and cozy atmosphere! 🌱🍴

The tasting menu at this restaurant is absolutely perfect—every dish is filled with creativity. It def is a flawless dining experience from start to finish. We loved every single dish in the menu! The flavors are unique and truly memorable. I celebrated my birthday here, and it couldn’t have been a better choice. The attention to detail and exceptional service made the evening feel extra special. Highly recommended for any celebration or a night to indulge in an incredible culinary journey.

Yelp
We came here for Valentine's day and had their tasting menu of roughly 8 courses. It was our first time here and the place is small and intimate. We were sitting by the door which seemed a bit odd as it was more of a waiting area but I could see they tried their best to close the door once it was opened as it was very cold outside, and encouraged people who arrived early to go next door for a drink instead of waiting and standing in front of our table. We got their daily cocktails and the food starting coming out shortly after. The food was excellent. There were a couple memorable items and the flavors were fresh and new. The reason for the 4 stars was that I thought it was over priced at $140pp plus 20% gratuity that I had to prepay when booking the reservation. At the end I didn't feel that full. Many of the courses were single bites and it was mostly meat or vegetables except for 1 slice of bread. I would probably go back and give them another try.

Yelp
One of the best meals I've had recently My friend and I had the tasting menu. Every dish was thoughtfully executed - really feels like you can't go wrong. Loved the sea bream and duck. The hibiscus sorbet was one of the best desserts I've had for a long time. Extra fun is the ability to order Grapes and Sodas cocktails during your meal. Ambiance is intimate/cozy, service was excellent. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
Quite disappointing experience. I should first start off stating the food is the only reason why this place didn't get a 1 star. The rating is simply the service. We came here for the tasting menu and it was about 10 courses. We were immediately rushed. Right when we sat down, we were asked if they could start appetizers when we haven't even ordered cocktails. The first few appetizers were placed one after the other and the server rushed through her explanation of the courses talking really fast and in a monotone. I didn't understand why the rush. We had to ask her to slow down so we weren't quickly finishing our bite before the next course. Secondly, I know this may sound snooty but if I'm paying for tasting menu, ($125 pp party of 4) I expect the utensils and plates to be changed out so the sauces and spices doesn't interfere with the next dish. To be fair, for the most part the dishes were changed out by the hostess and server but a few times they weren't and it was due to the manager. He didn't seem like a regular server. The tables were incredibly close together. The place was just small and intimate. As for the food, it's okay. Some dishes were too salty but it's okay. Corn tamale, kingfish, and chicken were tasty. I'm not quite sure if I would recommend to be honest. The food didn't wow us. It was just decent.

Yelp
The yellowtail was the best. The whole dish worked well so together. We also tried the the sourdough bread with leek green garlic spread, the pasta dish, the rice balls, and the orange yogurt rhubarb dessert. To say everything was perfect would be an understatement.

Yelp
Small intimate venue. Easy online booking. Service was friendly. Food is good, but nothing to rave about. We shared the sando, radicchio salad and a pork chop. The best part was the pork chop. The salad was on the bland side. The sando was too small and would not recommend.

Yelp
The food here is really tasty!! We were both pleasantly surprised by how much flavour both our dishes had. The kale salad was so refreshing and the red cabbage schnitzel was really satisfying. Also the bread with the grape/nigella butter is BOMB. Ate it before taking a picture! Resto vibe is nice too - small and cozy. There's an open kitchen which is fun to watch. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
The boyfriend and I are fine diners. And oh boy, what an amazing farm-to-table dinner we had here! Vancouver surprised us in many ways and this was the best surprise. Everything was tasty, flavorful and BEAUTIFUL. The chef was amazing, chatted with us and explained where the food came from. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Yelp
The food here was amazing and delightful. Our waitress gave fantastic suggestion and we followed her lead. Be prepared for robust flavors that you don't always think will go well together, they'll surprise you. Everything about this restaurant was spectacular.

Yelp
Some hits and misses here tonight! My friend and I started out with the bread and a kohlrabi dish - picture ravioli made of thinly sliced kohlrabi, with some sort of cream cheese inside. (Sounds weird right? It was.) My main though was excellent - duck confit with beets, farro, fig, and arugula. Loved that the richness of the duck was balanced out with some more summery ingredients; they all worked together fabulously. The service was not amazing. Throughout the evening we had two servers, which in itself was a little confusing, and neither of them were super warm or friendly which was a little disappointing. The restaurant is lovely and cozy with a nice atmosphere. Overall a nice evening out with my friend but a few things could have been a little better.

Yelp
just ate there. It was delicious and different. different flavors different combinations of ingredients and so damn good. never write these but the meal inspired me to share. dig it

Yelp
The food is great no question. But service is SLOW, small portions (and I don't like lg servings) , and pretty expensive, especially as vegetarians. Also if the portions are small and you have a table of three, maybe let the table know to order more when they place the order?? Won't be back.

Sharon R.

Yelp
Have always walked by this interesting location and was curious about the concept. So, on a whim, booked a table for three for my two friends and me. It did not disappoint! What could have been a casual lunch, turned into a "performance of tastes and textures". It was truly an experience to entertain my two friends, who gave me full credit for picking such a unique tasting experience. We went with the recommendation of the excellent server and it did not disappoint. A delightful way to spend a Friday afternoon for the food and for the show.

Yelp
First time here and we tried their 6 course tasting menu on Valentine's Day. Great portion and execution on most of them. I love the salmon dish with citrus dressing, very refreshing and flavourful. Duck breast was moist and skin was super crispy, sign of kitchen actually rendered the fat well! This dish is on their main menu too. Our server was attentive and polite. The only small thing we didnt know is that the tables are very close to each other. This means that most likely your neighbors will get all your jokes. Other than that, I must say I am a big eater but I left very well fed.

Yelp
Came here for happy hour. They have happy hour from 3:30 to 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays. We had the bottled daily cocktail which was delicious. It had calamansi and grapefruit soda. Would definitely recommend it if you want something light and refreshing. For snacks we had the blistered padrons and cauliflower. The blistered padrons went really well with the horseradish aoili. They were very smokey and meaty. Strangely addicting. The crunch of the almonds paired really well with everything and balanced out the bitterness of the padrons. The roasted cauliflower with the walnut muhammara was equally as delicious. They cooked the cauliflower so that it made it somewhat meaty and gave it some bite. Both snacks were great and paired well with the drinks. The service was also great. We sat for around 1.5 hours and weren't rushed out or anything as the dinner reservations started to come in. Would definitely recommend them for food and drinks. The place isn't very big so make reservations or come early

Yelp
Honestly this was the best lunch I have had in years. We made reservations for 1ish on a Tuesday but it was only 1/2 full so no fear if no reservations are in hand for at least the early week lunchtime. Close to Cheesecake Etc, the location is convenient and the interior is light and welcoming. An open kitchen lets you see the chefs in action, and the waiter was friendly and unobtrusively attentive. Ordered the 3 course set menu which lets you choose 1 from each of the selection of 3 small (appetizers), 3 large (entrées) and 2 desserts. My wife had the roasted squash and burdock to start, followed by the monkfish and for dessert the apple crisp. She has a small appetite so this was quite filling, I had to volunteer to help with the appie and the dessert, life is tough sometimes.. My order was the carrot soup that came with a delicious rustic sourdough bread and butter, the monkfish and the apple crisp. Monkfish was nicely proportioned and served with some roasted potatoes. Seasoning was spot on, could not have done better myself! At $40/person the set menu is on the pricy side for lunch but it was well worth the price and made for a great lunch date. We were so full we could only have a light supper.

Yelp
Fresh, flavourful food served in a cozy restaurant space. The menu rotates frequently but you can check online before you go if you're picky. Ingredients are all top quality. We split the smoked Berkshire-Tamworth ham, and pulled pork meals. The house-fermented mustard was unreal. Sprouted lentils: delicious and not something I could easily reproduce at home. Oh and both meats were tender, not overcooked, seasoned and garnished very well. The space is cozy and deceivingly large, particularly with the patio open. There isn't a ton of space between the tables, so don't expect much privacy. Other guests were friendly though :) Service was warm and friendly. I was seated before my friend arrived, and they offered me a blanket for the patio and took my drink order. Prices were reasonable for the amount and quality of food. If you're a big eater, you'll probably need an appetizer or bread as well. Overall, fantastic brunch spot!
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Been here a couple of times now. The menu always changes so it will be different when you go. They create their menu for the day or the whole weekend ( brunch ), depending on the ingredients they get. I had the mushrooms on brioche, poached eggs and salad. It was light, flavourful and well balanced. Just perfect after a cardio class. They don't put a lot of sauces so you can really taste the food/ingredients. If you like to add sauces, then you may not like this place. Also the portions are okay size, they focus more on the food, than size of their dishes. If you want to get stuffed, then this place isn't for you. If you want to have great food, then come and enjoy. They have a small patio to enjoy the sun.

Yelp
You know for me, despite the local ingredients and the top quality with which everything is prepared from farm to table. The best thing for me was the bathroom doors and the record player and the amazing Motown choices of music that was playing that night. The Service very good and the flavours of each dish were executed well enough that each bit did leave a smile on my face. The only problem with my meal was when my dinner friends got their meat dish. I pretty much got about 4 leaves of cabbage fancily grilled around the edges with some nuts and a very nice sauce. Yes, I got the Vegetarian set dinner and yes I just compared it to my friends dual omnivore dishes which was served at the same time as mine. I couldn't help but to feel like I was the one at a loss then and there. For the price of a paltry $65.00 for a 6 course set dinner, I felt a bit like wanting to shout out #metoo!? What's a girl got to do around here to get something of more or equal substance? So like any above middle aged woman would do. I accepted my terms and made the best of it and told myself how lucky I was to have had my cabbage. I told myself not only was it organic and locally grown and harvested by the farmer, but it was delivered by a Tesla in haste so as to not diminish the freshness of a freshly plucked cabbage no less than 4 hours old from harvesting. Alas, we came to the desert which I had none of that and instead requested if they had any cheese of the stinky variety that could make your breath overpower a dragons flame or like the sock that was worn during 10 consecutive gym classes to develop the malodorous scent of blue cheese fresh from it's brine. Yes I like things like stinky cheese, of the goat or cow variety. Most especially sheep. It came presented simply and without pretense as one slice on a wooden board with a dollop of honey and a side of shaved sourdough crust like scabs. You might not think so, but this was my creme de la creme when it came to finishing off any set course meal that I am able to sink my teeth into. So how was my meal? I had the Vegetarian Set course dinner for $65.00 and excluding the price for it's portions, it was very good. Factor in the price and I would simply opt for a salad elsewhere. I'm just being honest, no filters here. I did enjoy it and I would really want to come back and try the four course meal but something with a bit more substance next time. I think if were anymore like Oliver Twist, I too would be asking "Please, sir, I want some more." All jokes aside. I really did enjoy my meal and the food was spot on in flavour and the service informative and professional. On a nice summer evening, I would love to enjoy a simple meal here. The ambiance can be quite impressionable for a couple looking to have lovely wine pairings and a twinkle in each others eye for conversation. As I always end with each review. Typo's are free of charge because I'm all thumbs when it comes to typing things with my toes.

Yelp
I was hoping that The Farmer's Apprentice would be the highlight during my Week in Vancouver as it was recommended by a local friend and several food bloggers, but I was just so disappointed. It might went down in my "travel to eat" memoir as One of the Top 10 worst set menu meals I ever had. Booking via Bookenda was easy and we got an instant confirmation. I already knew there are only set menu options with "omnivore" $55 and "herbivore" $50. Since there were 2 of us, we ended up ordering both to share. All I had to say that the chef worked too hard trying to bring different flavours and elements together without any balance in taste. I really appreciate how local and seasonal ingredients are used to create each dish. But the bottom line, the food has to taste good. I think the portion was fine as a taster menu as too much mediocre food just means too much food. During the meal, we just kept asking ourselves why? why we paying for these? why we ended up eating here? Did the chef taste the food? Maybe we just not have the sophistication to understand? The only thing we enjoyed was our dessert.... Beewax Ice Cream, Mutsu Apple, Milk was just so clean tasting and refreshing! Service was attentive and I love the small cozy vibe here. I just wish the food taste better.

Yelp
I like it here. A friend of mine took me here for lunch as I wanted to eat something clean. He said he usually comes here for brunch on the weekend so the menu is very different. They dont have a big selection. 3 mains, 3-4 salads, 3-4 appies. They do have a combo of appie, main and dessert for 27. They come by and ask if you want distilled or sparkling water to start. We ordered the potato and leek angloti and chicken legs. The potato and leek angloto was delicious! It had greens in it and the sauce was amazing. Not too much sauce, but still saucy enough for the anglotti to have flavor. I will definetly be back for this specific dish. The chicken leg had polenta and side greens. Its not as savory and flavorful as the anglotti, but it was either this or the salmon dish which is lighter. We ate this dish first as we both enjoyed the anglotti more. Will be back for the anglotti for sure!

Yelp
We have been going to the Farmer's Apprentice since it opened but stopped going the last few years when the set tasting menu format was introduced. Thankfully, they are back to a la carte and just as awesome as ever! We were seated at 8:30 pm on a Wednesday table for 2 in the corner. Lots of privacy. The cocktails were excellent. Our rad waiter recommended a red wine by the glass and it was the perfect pairing with our meal. Had it not been Wednesday I would have ordered another. We started with the red fife country bread and spruce butter and god damn, best bread in a long time. We were eating vegetarian so had the charred treviso with anchovy vinaigrette , romaine caesar with nori mushroom crumble and ate every morsel. I always remembered pasta here being top notch and handmade and yep, killed it. Potato agnolotti with cherry, smoked mushroom and sour cream. I love that they support local farmers and have tons of veggie options. We will definitely be adding Farmer's back into the rotation!

Yelp
For dinner, this restaurant only offers a set menu. Either a four course at $43 or six courses at $58. We chose the four course experience. I listed my food allergies (dairy, gluten, sesame...) and awaiting my doom or delight. The environment was great but I was still hungry after my bill came. They didn't have gluten free substitutions that day so I missed out. I will not be returning for dinner. Menu: The dishes were not listed on the menu so every dish was a surprise. We were given the option to choose the fish, meat or vegetables. I chose fish. The first course was the heirloom tomato salad with diced plum and greens. It was topped with a light dressing which was delicious. The dish included green tiger tomatoes which I grew in my garden this year. Next was the fish. It was pan fried and came with a side of beet compote. The beets were bland. The fish was cooked beautifully but the chef didn't cook my fish in butter due to my dairy allergy so my fish very bland and under salted. I should have mentioned that butter is an exception. My friend had her fish the regular way and her fish was very flavorful. The next course was a tomato and green bean stew. This dish was meant to be served atop sprouted grains with fresh bread on the side. Being gluten-free, I received neither and wasn't offered an alternative so I ate the veggie stew and started to think about the fries that I was going to have after this meal. The restaurant had gluten-free crackers but they contain sesame seeds which I'm allergic to. The stew was very delicious. The green beans were seared and were still firm. My friend was extremely pleased with the bread and sprouts. I had food envy. My friend saw the envy in my eyes and asked the waitress if I was getting anything else since I didn't get the bread, she assured us that more is coming. The 'more to come' was a mint sorbet with berries that was made specially for me. The regular dessert was ice cream which was topped with grilled corn and served with berries on the side. The ice cream was delicious. My mint sorbet was sightly grainy in texture...as though there was some sort of powder added to it that never dissolved. We received the bill and I asked if there was anything with starch that they could give. My bill was over $80 and I was still hungry. I noticed the patrons at the table beside me had a corn dish earlier that night so I asked if I could have it as well. 10 minutes later I was gnawing on grilled corn with a side of sun-choke and root vegetable puree. Yuummm! Each course was paired with wine. At $28, this was a very expensive wine paring but the variety of wines and the fact that these wines are rare and natural made it worth it. The wine pairing for the six course meal is slightly more expensive. Overall, I wouldn't return to this restaurant because the ingredients they use are seasonal and the menu varies everyday. The element of surprise is not something that a person with food allergies welcomes. That day, their only starch was sprouted grains. If I had come on a quinoa week, my experience would have been different.

Yelp
I read some reviews were pretty good and foods were great, however, my experience was totally nay! I tried to find out the menu on the website, however, it didn't seem like update after July. In addition, the menu items are so limited. I still like to check it out. We went there for brunch on Sun and our disappointment started right we arrived. The waitress told us around 20 mins wait and eventually we waited for 50 mins! Our coffee was disgusting! Any gas station coffee would be better than them! I had steak n eggs, the steak was cold and chewy. My hubby got pulled pork with poached eggs which shoddy! Pork benny so dry and tasteless! They indicated local farm support and care of quality of food on website, however, I didn't see it on our food. Probably won't coming back again!

Yelp
The Farmer's Apprentice prides themselves on organic, local, and fresh ingredients. Everything is from Canada and they even tell you on their seasonal menus. They also opened Grapes and Soda which is right next to Farmer's Apprentice with more snacks and cocktails. This is fine dining so don't expect big portions. Enjoy the flavours and it'll eventually sit in. They have an omnivore and herbivore prix-fix menu so we got the omnivore menu. Overall, great flavours and lovely presentation but I don't think I would be paying this much for such incredibly small portions of vegetables with minimum wow factor.

Yelp
Cute small place.. come early to get a seat! I arrived as they were opening the doors, I totally understand what the other reviewer were saying very limited seating but I came early so plenty of seats when I arrived. I was greeted by a lovely lady sat me near the front. As I sat and waited for my lunch date, I had sometime to observe and look around. Cute place, open you can see the cooks and staff working in the kitchen I love that! I ordered the smoked castelvatrano olives to start as recommended by other reviewers. Omg delish must try even if you are not an olive lover! For lunch we ordered the five spiced pork terrine and the roasted coconut chicken salad. It was both pretty tasty and portions were good. The presentation was simple, the terrine came with small pickled veggies and the salad came with a very light lemon vinaigrette. Great little place!

Yelp
We visited Farmer's Apprentice for our date night out while visiting Vancouver and had a nice evening there! We did the demi tasting menu, which is 4 courses rather than 6, with the wine pairing. The tasting menu consisted of a salad, a main course (duck for me, stuffed pasta for my dinner buddy), a vegetable (asparagus for us), and the dessert, along with freshly baked bread with smoked paprika hummus (they accidentally gave us double the bread). The food was all tasty (I especially enjoyed the duck with morels) and fresh, although I wouldn't go so far as to say it was mindblowing. The wine pairings actually ended up being the highlight of our meal, and I am now a natural wine convert. The atmosphere was lively without being overwhelming, and the staff were really lovely. I will say that the ventilation inside the restaurant could be improved, as everyone more to the inside of the restaurant got really warm, whereas we near the door (which was kind of broken and would swing open everytime someone entered and wouldn't close unless someone, usually me, pulled it closed) were freezing cold.

My friends and I ordered three different dishes yesterday. I tried the pulled pork with buttermilk biscuits and fried egg and my two friends tried salads. All of the food tastes good and fresh. Knowing that the food was organic. I did not feel special about eating the food though. For my dish, it surprised me that their can pulled pork was not too salty. Buttermilk biscuits were great. My friends were late, so I had to wait for them sitting at the restaurant by myself. A staff asked if I would like to drink something else until my friends arrived. I ordered a cup of coffee. The coffee was Elysian. It was alright. The kitchen was open and clean that customers could see everything inside. Many chefs and helpers as well as waitresses were working together.

Yelp
I likey. It would probably be 5 stars if it was named Farmer's Padawan. This was my first of what I intend to be more visits. We arrived late (I called to let them know) because I had to change a flat tire for my date and they still had our table when we arrived. Granted it wasn't super packed but they rolled very well with it. I like the decor, it's rustic and they have an open kitchen. It adds kitchen cred. They might be a farmer's apprentice but they are well past kitchen apprentice. WARNING: they bring out the items with the intention of sharing so 2 mains will not come at the same time. There is no "my main, your main". We split a few dishes and they were all very nicely done. I think the menu is frequently changing so items listed in here might not be in the restaurant next time. To finish off with the bill were 2 freshly made caramels, keep your napkin handy because these suckers are oily and goooooey good.

Yelp
I hate giving out low scores on places I want to love. I saw the chef at Pecha Kucha and liked the guy,.. I liked everything he said, philosophy, everything. Organic, farm to table - awesome. However, the food I had for my lunch was tasteless, and pricey - a bad combo. The space,.. awesome. I love it when someone takes a chance to setup in an unclaimed area food-wise,.. but I just can't look past the food. I'm afraid I cannot understand the 5 star ratings of other reviews. And before you go thining I'm some burger and fries kind of guy that doesn't "get it" - I'm completely into this kind of place,.. it just has to taste better (or at least more interesting).

Yelp
We had the tasting menu + wine pairing as part of our super indulgent anniversary trip. The wines were incredibly paired with each dish. Don't skimp just do it. I told them I loved orange wine but not a huge fan of white and she adapted the tasting without batting an eye. The wines poured were outstanding. Service was top notch. It's not in a particularly happening area so we didn't luck out trying to find a cocktail/wine spot after dinner. Not a deal breaker obvi but good for you to know. Then the food was great. Truly exceptional. The menu is seasonal. The fish was excellent. Pork neck was inventive and delish. But then we ended on a navy and string bean salad which we thought was a bit odd. A 5 course tasting with only 1 protein seemed a bit of a letdown. But the whole experience was worth it. Def a must try. We may come back on our next trip and just keep our fingers crossed navy beans aren't the closer ‍

Yelp
No joke, this was the best meal I've ever eaten. My husband and I both got the tasting menu with wine pairings - I got the omnivore version and he got the vegetarian version. Everything I ate was bursting with flavor and just tasted so fresh and so good. My husband also loved his - we only had a few overlapping dishes so he had a bunch of different things going on. I would HIGHLY recommend the wine pairings, especially if you're going for a special meal. We tasted some really cool wine that we probably wouldn't have ordered on our own. By the end of the meal we were stuffed and had to (*gasp*) turn down the cheese course before dessert. We also had amazing service the entire time and felt super cozy and relaxed the whole time. If I lived in Vancouver I would definitely go back here often.

Yelp
Came here 6 months ago and I have to say the dinner was awesome. Ordered the poached egg, albacore tuna, dry aged angus strip loin, and other things as well. I have to say this place is super small and super busy. It came to about $60 per person. Its a place where you get tapas size but not tapa size price. Food was delicious except at that time, the poached eggs had a piece of nasty hair in it. However, the server was really nice and offered us a free dish of octopus (which this is no longer on the menu now). I don't like octopus but according to my friend it was delicious. Service was pretty good. The place is a open concept meaning you can see the chef cooking and it makes you feel nice to know that everything is fresh and the kitchen is clean. I would come back on special occasion.

Yelp
We had arrived in the afternoon for brunch. Oh what a delightful place! The sun was shining through the window, restaurant ambient was up beat with love songs from the 90's ..a bit too romantic and awkward for our liking...but we're here for the food. So here it goes...my dinner companion had the beef tongue hash ( yeah..sounds not so delicious, however it was quite well done! ). I had the pink albacore tuna on a bed of quinoa topped with soft boiled eggs. He ordered a third dish and it was the beef carpaccio...not sliced, but mince. It was different nonetheless very fresh. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Probably one of the newest interesting place to try! The farmers apprentice does live up to its name. What you get in this small but wonderfully decorated place is a great friendly bunch of staff who makes sure to always accommodate you. The food you order are set menus which change as the season change. Why? Well there dishes are composed of what creative dishes the chefs can create from the vegetables that are in season or pickled! I know, so different. Also everything is locally grown another plus for fans of keeping local farms surviving.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it ! Between the two of us we ordered 4 dishes. The potato bread as a starter was warm, crisp and delicious - also quite filling ! We also tried the unagi octopus, smoked trout and the compressed kohirabi, treviso and grilled sunchokes dish (I had no idea what these veggies were but they were quite tasty !). All the dishes were very artisan style and had distinct flavors that blended very nicely together. Each dish is in the $10-$14 range and the dishes are meant to be shared. Instead of bottled water, they offer distilled water for $1 which is a nice touch. The desserts were not too tempting so we opted to go to cheesecake around the corner instead. The menu changes daily so the dishes I mentioned may or may not be available. The menu is divided into 3 sections - vegetables, seafood, meat. So there are options for all kinds of picky eaters. They also make dishes gluten free is required. The staff was very knowledgeable, attentive and friendly ! I had been to this place before when it was Todd's and the new owners have completely transformed the venue ! It has a very nice vintage country ambiance now and looks very high-end. Plenty of cheap street parking available nearby ($1.50 per hour on the meters).

Yelp
If the rating was purely based on the food, I would have given 4 stars, but since it's an overall rating I'm giving Farmer's Apprentice 3 stars. Service is terrible here. Rude little Asian lady needs to learn how to smile and I wish they wouldn't push the whole "everything is for sharing so you should order at least 4 dishes". Bf and ordered the foie gras, gnocchi, quail, pork belly and pear tart. Foie gras was better than Chambar's but still not much difference, gnocchi was too soggy and the tart was meh. However, we were blown away by the quail! To our surprise, it was very moist and tender. Pork belly was fatty, but it's pork belly, so we knew what we were getting ourselves into.

Yelp
Original chef is gone , service and food quality is gone... three pice of dessert for 5 people party to share on a 500 dollar plus dinner... not going back

Yelp
Not sure why this place seems to polarize customers so much, as can be seen by the varying reviews. I'd highly recommend going in and trying it yourself, there is a very good chance you'd be pleasantly surprised. I didn't get a pretentious vibe, restaurant had a warm and cozy atmosphere. Head chef/owner brought out our dishes and finished them at the table (eg pouring consommé over the dish before serving) and gave us an explanation of the dish too. The food was amazing. They really let the fresh & unique ingredients shine, but get in the way just enough to create dishes that have been clearly thought out, with the goal of balancing out flavors and having fun with your tastebuds.

Yelp
Herring on toast with soup. Just the right proportion of food. The food was wonderful on the palette, unique flavours and approach to presentation. Even the dishes the food was served was had crafted by local potters. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Definitely a unique place that will keep me coming back to see what the kitchen will dream up next.

Yelp
Food is consistently somewhere between strong and amazing. There's a little bit of pretentiousness here (with the rotating menu that tends to neglect things we regularly come for like, an omelette or pancake). Servers are generally very professional though sometimes a little chilly -- I'm still trying to figure out their vibe and where it comes from. Qualifying as an item on their menu requires having at least one word that native English speakers are unlikely to know. And they change their hours occasionally without updating the website, which tends to, you know, strand people. But dammit, it's pretty awesome almost every time. Standby favorite items are the biscuit and jam, and the cappuccino. If there's pork belly on the menu, get it.

Yelp
Do you enjoy flavors and combinations you've not had before? Are you easily board and are looking for something new? Is that new thing gong to be prepared in a creative way? If you are answering yes to these sorts of questions then you need to come here. If you are more of the type to order the one reliable thing at your favorite local, then this is probably not the place for you. But for me, this was a couple of amazing dinners. I was in town for a couple of weeks and this is the only restaurant we came to twice. Both times it was creative, flavorful and amazing. I get why some people rate this lower, but if you answer yeas to my questions above, there is no reason why you won't love this place. I'm sure they may have a dish now and then that is a miss, but for me we loved each thing we had. This is a set menu, so be prepared for that. I performed not to ask or read about what that nights menu would be to ensure the the joy of surprise helps develop the apatite. Local sourcing, some foraging, nicely paired wines, creative use of ingredients were what I experienced at the Farmer's apprentice. Both nights we had the omnivore menu, which I think is very reasonably priced for the ingredients, the creativity, and the technique you are benefiting from with this meal. There is also an optional cheese course if you are interested. We did it one night but not the second, but enjoyed it never the less. I could give you a run through of what we had but since the menu is always changing, not sure what the point will be. Although the soux vide pork belly with oyster mushrooms is something to beg for, just like the ling cod with the yellow tomatoes. Just know I went away very happy after both meals and me and the DC are still talking about this place! Probably good that I don't live close by as I would be eating here way too often for my own good!

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FOOD Nothing would have made me happier after driving up from Seattle than sitting here and tasting this wonderful meal. It is a course menu, so you do not pick the entrees. However, I have zero complaints of the food that was given to me. The first course was made of carrots, dried carrots, and a yogurt topping. You could taste the farm to table freshness. The second course was a lamb tartare that was aged for three weeks. It sat upon a bed of greens in a sauce that melded all the delicious flavors together. With this, there was a sourdough bread with a special butter. Amazing. The third course was a beet salad that was to die for. One of my favorite courses in the set, the beets were fresh and impossibly sweet, especially the dehydrated beet that was hidden in. The fourth course was a skate wing with a potato purée and crab accents. This may be the first time I can say that a fish was flaky, but still soft enough to fall off the bone. The purée added a great texture to the overall dish. The final course was made of einkorn wheat, wild garlic, and nettles on top of a risotto with butter. Words cannot explain how delicious this dish was. The vegetables were amazingly crisp and the risotto with the butter cooked was absolutely incredible. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and all my friends. Thank you for a memorable time I had at The Farmers Apprentice. It will be a great memory of my trip to Vancouver.

Yelp
Chef David and his team are at the forefront of sustainability in the Vancouver food scene. He is incredibly mindful about his impact and influence through his cooking and it shows. I had a fantastic lunch that featured local ingredients showcased wonderfully. The kitchen is able to coax so much flavour yet still maintain the ingredients integrity. I hope to return soon to do the omnivore tasting menu

Yelp
One of the best meals I have ever had. The food and the service is exemplary. The food was all local farm to table and highlighted local taste in unique and amazing ways. They have non alcoholic fun drinks and a off the beaten path location with a charming patio.

Yelp
Read about The Farmer's Apprentice in a book on urban farming - had to check it out! Definitely a surprise with the revolving menu as you'll not ever get bored with the selection. Love the presentation of each dish, especially the colorful additions that made each dish pop. I have celiacs and they were very careful with food prep, ensuring each dish was gluten free for me. Do the wine pairing with the meal. Bradley took great care to select a great wine with each course as well as explaining why it was selected. Oh, and they got me to do something I don't normally do, eat mushrooms!!! If you're looking for eye catching and tongue pleasing food; a charmingly delightful, with simple elegant fun atmosphere, then The Farmer's Apprentice is your place. It felt right like home in my Mema's kitchen while I was here. Looking forward to our next trip to Vancouver just to visit The Farmer's Apprentice again.

Yelp
My wife and I had the 6 course tasting menu last week. We had some lapses in service - a missing fork that took a while to replace before we could eat our first course and a 30min wait between finishing one course and being served the next - but overall we thought the food was petty good until we noticed something late in our meal. This is a small restaurant with an open kitchen so many diners get a view of the food preparation. As we watched the head chef at the pass, we noticed that he would use one spoon to taste multiple sauces from multiple dishes as he was plating the food. So we spent the last part of our dinner watching this spoon go from a plate, to the chef's mouth, to another plate. We watched this happen over and over with dish after dish right before they were served to diners. I don't care whether I'm at a fast food joint or a Michelin starred restaurant, I don't want the chef's saliva in my food.

Yelp
I've probably eaten here about 4 times and have seen it progress from an a la carte to a prix fixe menu. Coming from Los Angeles, I think I have an idea of what this restaurant is trying to say. Farmer's Apprentices comes in the style of a farm-to-table restaurants. What this means is the restaurant typically cares about the sourcing of their ingredients from local farms. In Southern California, this is much easier because have an abundance of farms and produce with the sunshine and seasonality to give a large variety of produce. However in Vancouver, there are particular challenges here because during the winter time you have less ingredients to work with. The dishes work in a progression and serve to highlight vegetables and seasonal ingredients. So for example, you won't see tomatoes in the winter (they are a warm weather crop unless grown in a green house). From what I see, the courses progress from vegetable, to protein, to bread, finishing with dessert. First off, the first interesting thing I see is the bread course is in the middle of the menu instead of the beginning. And in one sense I appreciate that because there is more focus on the taste of bread. In our last tasting, they were serving bread made with Red Fife which is an artisansal whole wheat grain being resurrected in North America. The vegetable dishes are prepared with the intent of keeping flavors intact. For example sunchokes might be roasted over high head to bring out the sweetness paired with some sauces. To get the most out of this restaurant, I think it is important to know that this restaurant cares about their sourcing and how they prepare their food. For every ingredient, you could ask the waiter which far it came from and they would have an answer. Contrast that with other restaurants, and they would just say they bought their food from a local grocery market. I think every dish is really well thought out with intentional flavors. Generally speaking, I see their philosophy to cook vegetables enough to bring out complex flavors. Now is the food worth the price? It depends if you consider paying top dollar for farm to table type food. In one sense it brings up an elitism issue whether these types of restaurants are accessible, but from comparing the price of Farmer's Apprentice to one of our farm to table restaurant's in Santa Monica (such as Rustic Canyon), the price is definitely reasonable.

Yelp
Called. The don't do take out so we drove to the place to eat there. Asked if they were open until 2pm and the. Drive there but they were closed 1 hour early. Never mentioned this on the phone. Not nice in a rain storm.
