A Popular Orange County Restaurant Is Opening Inside LA’s Gorgeous Descanso Gardens | Eater LA

"Set to open inside Descanso Gardens at the end of the year or the start of 2025, the Farmhouse at Descanso spans roughly 6,700 square feet with an open kitchen, a bar made from the garden’s fallen trees, and an expansive patio; it takes over a meeting room inside Van de Kamp Hall directly off the gardens’ courtyard, and admission to Descanso Gardens is not required for dining. The menu’s ethos will reflect Richard Mead’s dedication to farm-to-table cooking but won’t be a replica of what he serves in Orange County, and earlier critical notes of his work include praise for the daily wood-fired pizza and the soppressata-topped pie alongside a critique that the restaurant’s signature seasonal vegetable bowl can be “a dense, sluggish welter of fibrous things.”" - Cathy Chaplin

Ten Great Places to Avoid The LA Rams Super Bowl | Eater LA

"Head farmer Nathan Peitso runs his family farm and the Beverly Center’s Farmhouse, where the meals are as fresh as one would expect. And while the brunch menu is a respectable choice, so is the $32 weekend buffet brunch with options like fig and ricotta toast, pizzas, enormous and fluffy buttermilk biscuits, and croque madame." - Mona Holmes

Enjoyed lunch here! So glad to have a nice space and good restaurant in La Canada! Restaurant was really cute, modern farmhouse chic. Food was tasty, really enjoyed the mussels with a side of fries and a bottle of rose. Husband enjoyed the roast pork tenderloin! Lots of vegetate selections too, keeping with their farm to table vibe! Beet salad was gorgeous! The passion fruit cheesecake was a great finisher!

This restaurant is fantastic! My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here and because the food and atmosphere was so good, we definitely will be going back. We started with our cocktails, the Petal & Thorn and the Palm & Prophecy which were excellent (very sweet!) We split the pizza of the day which featured prosciutto and peaches and we hope it becomes a staple because it was our favorite dish. Then for our entrees we had the grilled albacore tuna sandwich that came with the best version of sweet potatoes I’ve had in a long time, and the spaghetti squash enchiladas which was fantastic. The staff were also very nice! Highly recommend!

We couldn’t make reservation online and dined as walk in. The host was kind enough to seat us outside. We ordered jidori chicken, roasted fingerling potatoes, coriander and cumin spiced carrots, and wild mushroom with braised greens and three cheese gratin. Jidori chicken’s skin was nicely roasted and we had to ration the skin. All the dishes are charming and delicately flavored.

A perfect farm-to-table finish to a day at Descanso Gardens Follow on IG: the_hungry_emil Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens is a stunning new venture by the chef behind Farmhouse at Roger’s Gardens in Corona del Mar. Nestled in the tranquil hills of La Cañada, adjacent to one of Southern California’s most beautiful botanical gardens, this spot is a true gem—especially after a long walk through Descanso’s blooming trails. We started with the Pizza of the Day: a beautifully balanced creation of prosciutto, harvest peaches, mustard greens, and a touch of balsamic glaze. Sweet, salty, and perfectly charred—every bite was outstanding. The Coriander & Cumin Spiced Carrots were another highlight—earthy, vibrant, and expertly paired with burrata and mint. The Cauliflower Steak impressed with pine nuts and a herbaceous, smoky flavor from its rub and herb sauce. For mains, the Grilled Hoisin Soy Glazed Pork Tenderloin was juicy and rich, with a potato purée and almond crumble that showcased responsible sourcing and culinary care. The Seared Salmon was perfectly cooked, but the real standout was the unique, hearty texture of the Tehachapi Grain Project Sonora Grains underneath—a detail that showed how deeply the kitchen cares about its ingredients. We also tried the much-talked-about Roast Spaghetti Squash & Braised Greens Enchiladas, and they did not disappoint. It's an inventive twist on comfort food, with squash, enchilada sauce, and cauliflower rice bringing together farm flavors in an unexpected way.

First time we came for  dinner we sat at the bar; the bar staff was engaging with everyone, super informative and attentive. Seemed like they didn't stop for a second but made sure everyone enjoyed themselves. Darren, especially, was an amazing bartender. He told us the story about the fallen oak trees in the park and how they used a lot of them and made the bar top and all the  table tops. Looking forward our next visit as there (thank you Darren!) we will be back soon!

We went here for my birthday. My mother loves vegetables and small plates and the menu was great for this. We had a selection of different plates to try. The staff were charming. It's only been open a few weeks so they are still working things out and it lacks a little polish but the charm and kindness of everyone easily makes up for that. The only disappointment food wise was the mushroom gratin, the wild mushrooms just seemed like generic mushrooms when I had hoped for something a bit more adventurous. The use of wood from the garden for the furniture and interior was spectacular. The wooden tables were beautiful. The space is quite cavernous but nicely finished.

I thoroughly loved everything about this place. Natalie our server, the nicest and super patient with us. The drinks were so fresh. The food was amazing. I can’t wait to come back.

Our family of five had a wonderful evening. The waiter, Jeff, was warm, funny, and knowledgeable. Everything he recommended surpassed our high hopes. The kids mostly ate from the main menu and found foods that they wouldn't normally eat to be delicious. We were impressed with the local red wine selection. And in addition to the service and the food, the atmosphere - eating outdoors on a warm June evening as the sun set across Descanso Gardens - so special, possibly even epic. Strong recommend.

Yelp
I visited The Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens and had such a memorable meal, thanks in large part to our incredible server, Prizzy. From the moment we sat down, she was warm, attentive, and so knowledgeable about the menu. She recommended the pizza with prosciutto, pesto, and peaches--a combination I wouldn't normally think of, but it was absolutely delicious. We also ordered the DG burger, and it was perfectly juicy and full of flavor. To pair with everything, she suggested a glass of Sancerre wine, which was light, crisp, and paired beautifully with our meal. Prizzy made the entire experience feel personal and welcoming. If you're dining here, I highly recommend asking for her--you'll be in great hands. We left happy, full, and already talking about coming back!

Yelp
What a lovely setting, lots of integration with the outdoors including reclaimed wood tabletops. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive; she made several great suggestions. I loved the carrots with herbs and pistachios, as well as the cheese board. The bread was delicious, but I miss the bread at Roger's Gardens! The pastry chef is talented and I recommend ordering the specials before they sell out

Yelp
Located just inside the entrance to Descanso Gardens, this restaurant is a true gem. From the moment we arrived, I was struck by the warm professionalism of the entire team--from the hostess to the bartender and our server. It's rare to encounter such consistently attentive and polished service across the board. Despite the restaurant being fully booked (reservations are definitely recommended), the service remained efficient and friendly throughout our visit. I ordered the grilled albacore tuna sandwich, which was flavorful and well-prepared, though a bit messy--eating it with a knife and fork worked best. My friend had the DG Burger and described it as exceptional. The drinks menu is extensive, and their martinis are expertly crafted. With a seasonal, farm-to-table menu that changes regularly, I'm already looking forward to returning and trying new dishes.

Yelp
This restaurant is located outside the entrance to Descanso Gardens, meaning you don't have to pay for admission to the Gardens in order eat at the restaurant. But you absolutely should make reservations. After spending time in the Gardens, my wife and I had lunch here. We had made reservations a couple days prior and were seated immediately at our designated time. The interior is on the small side with a covered patio attached. Walk-ins can sit at the bar, which is enormous, if no tables are available. We decided to order two dishes to share: the Asian Chicken Salad and the pizza of the day, the latter recommended by both the hostess and our waitress. I also asked for a house-made lemonade. The lemonade was excellent, a perfect mix of sweet and sour. The pizza was made with pesto, prosciutto, balsamic, and sliced peaches with a good amount of arugula on top. It sounds odd but it was really good. It reminded me of a Hawaiian pizza but the peaches added a more subtle sweet flavor than pineapple (and less acidic). All the flavors combined for a tasty pizza which I really enjoyed. The crust was soft but crisp around the edges and had great flavor. I had to use fork and knife for the first piece until it cooled a little and the crust stiffened up. The salad was excellent. The shredded chicken pieces were tender and flavorful. The finely chopped ingredients - cabbage, red peppers, carrots, red onions, baby bok choy, sugar snap peas, cilantro, mint, mandarin oranges, and crispy wontons combined for a wonderful blend of flavors. A sesame vinaigrette was the final touch to make it a perfect salad. Service was personable and attentive, and the prices were, happily, quite reasonable. Our only issue was what can often be expected when you are seated on a patio - an uninvited, occasional pesky fly. Luckily, one of my manly skills is swooshing away flies.

Yelp
Farmhouse is the latest iteration of a sit-down restaurant at Descanso Gardens and the best so far, in my humble opinion. I was fortunate enough to be treated to lunch by my friend for a special occasion and was impressed. We scored seats at the bar, where our delightful server Morgan kept us in drinks and conversation. We started out with cocktails; my Peach Margarita, the seasonal offering, was outstanding. The peach garnish was perfectly ripe, with a dash of Tajin, and the tequila/peach combo worked well. We then moved on to a non-alcoholic drink created by our server, Morgan: The Watermelon, made with fresh watermelon and a melon basil shrub (shrub is also known as a drinking vinegar). It was perfectly refreshing and delicous on a warm summer's day. We split the pizza of the day (peach/prosciutto) and a market salad. The pizza crust was absolutely delicous, yeasty and chewy; the toppings screamed summer and were perfectly seasoned. The salad ingredients were fresh and lightly tossed with dressing. A perfect summer lunch. We finished with a Meyer lemon tart, which was just okay but arrived with a candle to be blown out. Once it became known that we were celebrating my birthday, more restaurant staff came to express well-wishes and to verify my astrological sign. Now, this is California, and so there are many people that believe in astrology; I am not one of them. I didn't make a fuss, though; my friend wisely commented that the staff was just trying to make a connection. Point taken. Reservations recommended. Free parking in the lot.

Yelp
Located at the Descano Gardens, this restaurant offers a refreshing taste of healthy food! The style seems to be a farm-to-table type, and the name suits it. You should make reservations if you are coming here on the weekend. The inside is so pretty with wood interior and hanging lights. It feels like you're in a huge cabin. Overall, the food and the vibe here make me wish I lived a lot closer so I could enjoy a nice meal! The salad that we ordered was nice and refreshing, the sweet potato fries were gigantic, the chicken was delicious and of course, you should order the mussels! Our party of five enjoyed everything and we shared all the food. Would come back and would recommend it.

Yelp
My partner and I ended our Saturday with a late afternoon stroll through Descanso Gardens and decided to try the new restaurant, Farmhouse. I'd been excited to experience this new farm to table spot, and it did not disappoint. After walking among the roses, we arrived at a beautiful, chic space, a stylish lounge with an oak bar made from a tree that had fallen during a storm in construction. The service felt handpicked, thoughtful, attentive, and clearly from people who know exactly what they're doing. And the food left us wanting to try everything else on the menu, especially those carrots again. We started with the coriander & cumin spiced carrots, which our incredible server Franny told us was her favorite dish. I don't even like carrots that much, and I couldn't get enough. They were absolutely divine. We also had the French fried satsumaimo sweet potatoes, perfectly seasoned and delicious with the papaya mustard dipping sauce, and the mussels, which were solid. My partner had the DG Burger and really enjoyed it. The drinks? Wow. Both the cocktail and the mocktail we ordered were some of the most beautifully balanced drinks we've had, layered, complex, and genuinely memorable. Huge thank you to Franny for her warmth and great recommendations, and to Carol, the general manager, whose presence and care made the space feel truly special. We can't wait to return, and yes, we'll be ordering those carrots again.

Yelp
Came to visit the gardens on a Tuesday and it was surprisingly busy! We were there by 11am Restaurant opens at 1130am and and my girlfriend and I were able to snag the last couple seats at the inside bar, which is first come first serve. I had reservations at 1230p just in case, which was the earliest available a couple days before so definitely plan ahead if you are not flexible on the time. Once seated our bartender was very knowledgeable and explained that the menu is seasonal and changes often. I opted for gin based cocktails on this day and all were delicious but the petal & thorn was my favorite; a little sparkly and citrusy which are two of my favorite things. They offer an extensive drink menu with many tea and non alcoholic options. The bartenders description of the seasonal pizza had us hooked so we ordered the peach, prosciutto and pesto pizza and it was a 10/10 absolutely delicious. I would definitely order that every time it's offered. The menu is so good and different that you could probably try something new every time you visit, which I love. The inside bar looks out to the entrance of the garden which offers a beautiful view and it's just a different vibe than anything around. You do not need an admission ticket to visit the restaurant and parking is free so if you have not visited this hidden gem you must!

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL NEW RESTAURANT AT DESCANSO GARDENS ============================================= Descanso Gardens members were given the opportunity to make reservations on Open Table before they opened up reservations to the public. I think the restaurant opened at the end of May and I made a reservation for Monday, June 2nd, for lunch. The hostess took my friend and I to a big booth for six in the corner of the bar area. Next time I would like to sit at the bar right at the corner. John, the head bartender, told us that was the most popular location so far. My friend and I both ordered a salad. I chose the Farmhouse Market Salad for $17. There were lots of things inside. See my photo of the menu. It was really good, but it seemed like the salad had salt on it. This was without the dressing that I held on the side. I don't salt many things, so I noticed that. My friend chose the Roasted Beet Salad for $17. She really loved that, however they brought her salad out ten minutes after they brought mine out. Both should have been delivered at the same time. I ordered a Stone Delicious IPA and they brought out a can. I guess this one was not on tap. They just opened and I am sure they are working out the kinks.

Yelp
I'm a member of the gardens and I was PUMPED for Farmhouse to open. After about a year or more of anticipation, Farmhouse finally opened its doors in May 2025 to members only, followed by to the public in June 2025. For those who are slightly turned off by their not-so-elaborate menu, don't give up on them just yet! Their menu may not be the most exciting but their food is fresh, tasty, and worth the visit. We asked the staff whether they plan to expand, and they said they eventually will, so I will continue to keep them in my rotation of local restaurants. Farmhouse is beautiful both in the interior and exterior. They have a good amount of tables both inside and outside, and I bet it'll be very cozy outside during the warm summer nights. The interior has tall, farm-like ceilings that feel very inviting, along with hand-painted murals of different trees on the walls. It's truly stunning! I liked how the bar area connected the inside and outside. They played volume-appropriate easy-listening tunes and it was easy to have a conversation. Ambiance was casual yet chic, intimate, and rustic. I absolutely loved it! Here's what I ordered: - Asian Chicken Salad - what a pleasant surprise! This was fresh, flavorful and a good size. I loved the wonton crisps and the dressing was spot-on. I also hear that the Farmhouse salad is worth a try. - DK Burger - cooked perfectly medium, burger was very good! Can't say it was the best I've had, but worth a try. I liked the house-made ketchup and really enjoyed the pickles! The fries/potatoes were slightly undercooked in my opinion, but not a big deal - (Cocktail) Palm & Prophecy- recommended to me by our lovely bar lead, this gin-based drink was what I was hoping for. Pineapple-infused but not too sweet, it was a wonderful blend of gin and sweetness of pineapple. I enjoyed this! The only few disappointments were that there were quite a few items that were sold out, including the 'pizza of the day' and certain beers. But given they just opened two weeks ago, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and realize that they are still figuring things out. Gives me another reason to come back :) The staff here are friendly, attentive and helpful. They checked in at the right times and items came to our table in a timely manner. Way to go Farmhouse! I look forward to seeing what additional items you'll add to your menu :)

Yelp
I came here with my girlfriends to check out the new restaurant at Descanso. First off, as stated above, the restaurant is located at Descanso, which is already an automatic plus in my book. As expected, the restaurant is beautiful, airy, and a great place to meet up with friends or perhaps have a celebration (like a bridal/baby shower... if they allow that). Second, the food is actually pretty good! My friends and I went on the first day for members and we thought the food was quite yummy. I hope the food stays consistent! :) The price is a little on the high side for what the food is, in my opinion, but I assume we're paying for ambiance. I got the chicken (very juicy). My friends got the burger and tuna sandwich, and we all were satisfied with our meal. Finally, bc this is at descanso, parking is free and plentiful!

Yelp
Super cute ambiance and simple decor allowing nature to be part of the experience. Cauliflower steak was very tasty, Burger was ok and natural cut fries were ok and I love fries but these were alil too burnt. My friend said salad was ok, would try something else next time. I love farm to table experiences and so expected better tasting food for the pricing.$$$

Yelp
This review is long overdue, but here we go -- because our experience at Farmhouse was honestly unforgettable! I had the most beautiful girls' day with my mom and sister at this stunning new restaurant tucked inside Descanso Gardens. The location is dreamy -- you feel like you're dining in the middle of a secret garden. But let's talk about the food... because wow. We started with the farmhouse charcuterie board -- flavorful, balanced, and perfect to share. The coriander and cumin spiced carrots were such a surprise -- bold, earthy, and perfectly roasted. We also had the cauliflower steak which was my favorite, full of flavor and beautifully plated. The roasted beet salad was another standout -- fresh, vibrant, and to die for. For drinks, I had a glass of the Adelaide Cabernet Sauvignon (delicious and smooth), followed by one of their coffees -- which, by the way, comes from Jones Coffee. My mom and sister tried a couple of their cocktails and were so happy with everything. Dessert? Don't leave without ordering the cheesecake (creamy heaven) and the warm chocolate truffle cake -- rich & melty. And honestly, what made this experience truly special was the service. Our server, Prizzy, was an absolute gem -- kind, attentive, and just made us feel so taken care of. I'd come back just for her! All in all: amazing food, stunning location, and 10/10 service. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
We had dinner here with our kids and they were very accommodating. Kids menus, kids cups, special requests catered to etc. our kids had butter noodles with Shirley Temples and said it's the best butter noodles they've ever had! My husband and I sampled at least 5-6 different cocktails from the bar, all of them were absolutely delicious. Very well balanced drinks, not too sweet or too strong with fresh ingredients and house made shrubs and syrups. I appreciate they do not batch make their drinks. For food we tried the cheese platter, charcuterie plate, beet salad, DG burger and the Grilled Asian Beef short ribs. We really enjoyed all the food but my personal favorite was the fries that came with the burger, they were potato wedges with a house made ketchup. And their Beef Short Ribs. The beet salad was very flavorful and delicious. The cheese & charcuterie were good, I wish there was an option that offered cheese and meats together so we didn't have to order both separately. My husband loved his burger so all around we were very happy with the food. The ambiance is very airy and light which suits the garden atmosphere. Their AC was out but we were there late enough it started to cool down. Hopefully that will get fixed soon. It didn't take away from the experience and I would highly recommend this place for a date night, girls night or family dinner.

Yelp
As much as we enjoy being members of Descanso Gardens, it has always lacked good food options, so the news of a new restaurant was exciting. The place was nice - open, airy, and very much rustic chic, which matched the garden vibe perfectly. The food was mostly good. The soup and pizza of the day were both delicious. The roasted chicken was a bit on the dry side. Overall, the meal was satisfying, though nothing felt particularly special. The service, unfortunately, was the biggest downside, and it was mostly due to one staff member. I can still picture how her expression changed right before we entered our tip at checkout and immediately after. It felt like watching someone perform a play right in front of us. The 180-degree shift from the biggest, sweetest smile to an icy cold nothingness was quite striking. And in case you're wondering, we tipped about 22%, so it wasn't like we were being stingy. Overall, I'm not sure I'd want to go back, considering the sour taste the experience left. Everyone else was nice, and the food was decent, but it's unfortunate that our first visit didn't live up to expectations.

Yelp
A highly anticipated lunch date as it took two weeks since opening to secure a reservation for noon. The weather was perfect, not too hot with a subtle breeze made the patio a choice place to be seated. We just had water to start and ordered the Farmhouse salad and Pizza of the day based on the recommendation of Carol who works there. Today's Pizza of the Day was fantastic! A light and thin, but crisp enough crust to hold and sustain the toppings of pesto, prosciutto, grilled peaches drizzled with balsamic and topped with arugula. I memorized it because I'm going to recreate it at home. $22 The Farmhouse salad was OK. Greens were fresh but leaves were gigantic instead of torn into bite size pieces. For $17 I'd go with a different selection. Since my friend and I were sharing we save room for coffee, Jones coffee, $5 each (no refill) and the Apple Crisp based on our server, Jonet's recommendation. He by the way was so sweet and delightful. The dessert was just meh, I found the sweetness over powering and lacking depth of flavor. Basically the dish tastes and looks like some apples sautéed in brown sugar topped with granola with a dollop of vanilla ice cream the size of the small side of a melon baller. I think adding some orange zest, cinnamon, orange or fresh lemon juice with some freshly sliced slivers of basil would make this dessert better to cut the grainy textured brown sugar sweetness. Lunch for two with tip was $80. One thing to note, there was a very long wait from when we ordered to when the food arrived. I suspect it's to allow guests to enjoy a glass of wine prior to the food arriving. We had enjoyed a lap through the gardens ahead of our reservation and had skipped breakfast to full enjoy the experience, so the delay was quite noticeable, at least 30 minutes.

Yelp
We were really excited to check out Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens for a late weekend date night. The setting is beautiful, naturally, though the interior of the restaurant feels a little cold, kind of like a cafeteria with very bright lighting and a weird early '00s pop playlist. On the whole the service was somewhat uneven. Our servers were great, and everyone was friendly, though there is a lack of professionalism from certain staff members, which for the price and setting feels off. The host joking that we couldn't have a table while staring at a sea of empty seats was tone deaf and lacked hospitality. Also-why are there 3 hosts for an empty restaurant at 7PM on a Sunday? As far as the food, it was a mixed bag. The pizza of the day was peaches, prosciutto, and pesto and it was fantastic! The burger was very good, served with thick, skin-on steak fries. Though the homemade catsup served on the side was a sugar bomb. The other food was really underwhelming. We had a few cocktails and they were delicious, and they have a decent beer and wine selection. This is a newer spot, and I hope things fall into a groove, but for about $100 per person with drinks it is too pricey to be this mid.

Yelp
What a wonderful spot. Food is excellent and it's beautiful. The tables and bar are made out of wood from trees that fell down in the gardens. Adam the head chef is very nice and charming. I might just get a gardens membership because of this place

Yelp

Yelp
Great restaurant idea/pairing for Descanso Gardens. A carefully curated menu. Imported cheeses, fresh peaches and housemade Pesto on pizza, the DESSERTS were so good. Went there for a cousin meetup and it was the perfect setting. Very serene- staff was so welcoming and made sure to check on us. Even other staff members passing by would stop just to see if we were enjoying ourselves. Great place to have drinks and little nibbles, if that's what you're into. A MUST TRY!! Everything was perfect. Chef's Kiss!

Yelp
No captain running the ship sums things up. TLDR: They were out of the items they were known for, slow service and unable to make basic items like a sandwich on time. We came here on a Friday night after attending an art opening at Descanso Gardens, meaning there was a larger than normal crowd. It doesn't appear the Farmhouse did any coordinating with DG because right when we sat down we were informed they were out of the short ribs and that they couldn't offer sweet potato fries with the tuna sandwich. Ordered: Bottle of Brut. No ice bucket was provided had to track one down on my own. Cauliflower steak (Nice flavor with vinegar, rosemary and pine nuts) Roasted carrots (Nice recipe but the carrots themselves lacked any sweetness) Tuna sandwich (Kitchen was backed up so we had to order to go) I was shocked how unprepared the restaurant felt for a Friday night service. Not a good look.

Baron V.

Yelp
Great location, the ambiance is great. Open and airy. All the counters and table tops are from reclaimed oak trees from descanso gardens. The service was great. Very welcoming. Jeff is just the best. The food is good but don't expect a huge menu. We plan on taking friends. A walk through the gardens and then dinner. What a nice addition to the community.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but I've had two disappointing experiences I can't overlook. On two separate occasions, I made a reservation over the phone--once for a birthday lunch, and once for friends visiting from overseas--and both times they had no record of it. I even called the morning of the second reservation to confirm, but no one called me back. It's frustrating, especially with so few nice lunch spots in the area--and these were special occasions. To make matters worse, during the second visit, the server accidentally spilled pasta oil all over my guest's shirt and pants. They were kind about it, but only offered a free drink. For an upscale restaurant, I expected more care and accountability. I don't usually leave negative reviews, but with repeated issues and little effort to make things right, I felt it was necessary to share.

Yelp
I was excited to visit the new restaurant at Descanso Gardens after hearing it had finally opened, but I left deeply disappointed. We arrived around 11:00 AM on a Sunday. Since we didn't have a reservation, the only available seating was at the bar. (There were plenty of empty tables inside the restaurant--so why weren't any of them available?) Unfortunately, our seats were placed directly in front of the glassware station--an awkward location where the staff couldn't easily reach us. Why create seating in an area that is essentially unserviceable? The menu was very limited, with few appealing options. I ordered the albacore tuna sandwich and specifically requested it medium rare. Despite this, it took nearly 40 minutes to arrive, and when it finally did, the tuna was severely overcooked and dry--completely inedible. Is there anyone actually overseeing the entire operation? This was a frustrating and disappointing experience. I don't think I'll be returning.

Karen B.

Yelp
We had the melon salad with tajin and homemade ricotta cheese that our waiter recommended and it was the highlight of a wonderful meal. We also had the peach, prosciutto, pesto pizza that I'd seen recommended in several reviews and I can definitely add my 5 stars on that dish! Lovely place, great service, delicious food!

Yelp
We booked our reservation at OpenTable and when we got there, we were checked-in fast. We got our table ready right away. Our server greeted us and presented us with the specials for the day since it's the 4th of July. The food was good and healthy as well. The salad that we ordered did not match our taste but it's still good. The Farmhouse is spacious and it's family-friendly too. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience.

Yelp
I'm thrilled to have a restaurant like this in the area. The atmosphere, food and drinks were all amazing . The staff was very accommodating to our family . They have a kids menu for the littles as well. I'm looking forward to coming here every weekend ! We got a bunch of the small plates to share and it was a perfect lunch .

It's been a while since I've been so impressed. I went on their second day being open and the staff were friendly and a pure joy to talk to. Truly loved how they interacted with us and we were able to try their espresso martini that they were experimenting with: just fyi best espresso martini I've ever had (if you like cinnamon).

Yelp
I have been to the Farmhouse twice and both times I have wanted so much for this restaurant to succeed. Unfortunately I have nothing good to say about the food. Spending $300 for a meal for 4 and leaving dissatisfied and even disgusted has led me to leave this review. The best suggestion I can make to the chef is "less is more". Too many things on a plate with too many mushy, sauces. The use of the same ingredients on different plates is disappointing . Visually unappetizing, confusing seems to be the theme with most of the plates. A tough inedible $55 steak should be refunded. A pice of salmon swimming in a saucy barley slop and uncooked green beans that spills over the edge of the plate just made me nauseous. You should not charge people this much money when you have not worked out your menu and presentation. Worst restaurant I have ever been to.

Yelp
What a lovely new restaurant in the foothills area. We went for the first time last evening and now I can't wait to go back. My husband and I shared a pizza, beet salad and apple crispy dessert. Wow, everything was just wonderful. We are so glad this new gem has come to our area!

Yelp
The most delicious fresh fruit margarita... not sickly sweet, but full of the flavor of farm fresh peaches! The special pizza of the day.., prosciutto & peach of course... yum! I enjoyed the sunset/ as the evening falls this place is magical, mix of delightful waitstaff , very beautiful setting, stunning bar top hewn from fallen oaks in the garden... and can't wait to come back to try more items-- they all look so good. This is now my favorite local spot .. the only thing missing is a live jazz set or simple guitar in the garden..,

Yelp
I am so excited that this is finally open and I was there for late lunch with a friend. Service was fabulous and Angela was never far away and was so helpful. We started with the Provence Rose and shared the tasty asparagus. I had the wonderful mix of tastes Tuna Sandwich with "to die for" sweet potatoes and dipping sauce. My friend had the DG Burger and was truly happy with all. The menu is mouth watering with varied ingredients and I cannot wait to be back since I love Descanso Gardens. I hope they start serving brunch... right now no plans... We sat outside in the farmhouse design that is covered so cool and the inside reminded me of a vineyard... very open. All staff were welcoming. Once the awareness starts, I am sure there will be crowds. Plan ahead!

Yelp
I ordered a hot coffee. It arrived hot, but in a cup with NO HANDLE. Thus it was impossible to actually drink the coffee because THE CUP WAS TOO HOT TO HOLD . I asked for a cup with a handle and the waitress apologized and said they did not have any. She also told me this was a common request, and she gave me a napkin to wrap around the hot cup, so I could actually drink the coffee. Hmm ... note to management - there is a reason coffee cups have handles :) The waitress was nice but the food took a long time to arrive. The food was fine - better than my cooking for sure, but not exactly something to write home about either. There is one restroom inside the restaurant which is coed, all gender, however if you are uncomfortable with that there are other traditional restrooms just outside the door.

Yelp
We chose Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens for our small dinner. The table was ready when we arrived, and the waiter was very patient. Food came on time and the dessert was just amazing. Felt peaceful and special without being too fancy.

Yelp
Disappointed but Hopeful: A Mixed Experience at The Farmhouse After several delays, I was excited to finally dine at The Farmhouse. With some strong early write-ups--and a few mixed reviews--I was curious to see how it would all come together. Reservations were available for our party of eight on a recent Saturday night, and with chefs Mead and Cherney behind the concept, expectations were high, though realistic for a new opening. First impressions were promising. The space is aesthetically pleasing, and we were greeted by a friendly hostess who told us we'd be seated shortly. After about 10-15 minutes of waiting, I checked back in and was told they didn't have enough menus for our party. I offered to share menus so we could be seated, which they accepted. This hiccup seemed like an opening-week logistics issue, but one that hopefully can be avoided by simply printing more menus in line with reservation counts. We started with appetizers: the cheese board, charcuterie, PEI mussels, mushroom-braised greens, and three-cheese gratin. This is when the cracks began to show. Dishes arrived at noticeably staggered times, and we saw the first signs of a recurring theme: a lack of seasoning and flavor. The kitchen clearly uses quality ingredients, but the execution is falling short. In a restaurant led by two seasoned chefs, it's hard to justify bland, under-seasoned food--especially at premium prices. Our entrees included several orders of the enchiladas (dry, bland, and lacking sauce), the DG hamburger (ordered medium rare, served well-done), the Jidori chicken, and the peach pizza. Surprisingly, the pizza was the standout--well-executed and worth recommending. Service was another area that needs improvement. While our server was warm and personable, she was frequently absent for long stretches, leaving us to flag down others for basics like water or clearing plates. At one point, I had to go directly to the bar to order drinks. The bar itself was generally more responsive, but even there, issues surfaced. The much-hyped Peach Margarita fell flat--weak in both flavor and tequila--and a simple draft beer order took over 20 minutes due to a keg change. Would I return? Maybe, but mostly for the location and the genuinely friendly staff. Still, there's a lot that needs fixing. The kitchen needs stronger leadership, better timing, and more attention to seasoning. An expeditor could help immensely with food pacing. Service staff need more support and training. Management seems aware--one manager did come by to apologize, which I appreciated--but the overall experience felt like a restaurant still finding its footing. Here's hoping they tighten things up. The potential is there, but they need to get their act together.

Yelp
Food is very good! Ambiance is good, our server was very knowledgeable of the menu. The only reason I have to give this a low score is because the fly's are unbearable. I've been 2 times and the fly's are out of control. I just can't recommend eating here until they figure out the bugs. Maybe a fly catcher, maybe a fan or anything to just keep the fly's at bay.

Yelp
Wonderful venue, service was ok, but... I'm sorry to have to say, they need a better chef. The food looks great on the website pictures but doesn't measure up. Menu is limited which again, is ok, but the food is mediocre and very expensive. If you're going to charge that kind of money you need to present a memorable dining experience, and that means good recipes properly prepared.

Yelp
Attentive staff and delicious food! If you can, plan on eating here after your visit if you think you'll have leftovers. Very accommodating to allergies/dietary restrictions.

Yelp
The chicken was cooked extraordinary, juicy and flavorful. Drinks and desserts incredible. Lovely atmosphere. Attentive service. Will definitely patronize again!

Yelp
Pretty mediocre food. Four different dishes... and all surprisingly bland. Took 45 mins to get salads and a cheese board. Ambiance is nice, and we love the gardens. But Farmhouse will not be part of our visits moving forward.

Yelp
Had a WONDERFUL LUNCH today with my sister: delicious fingerling potatoes and mussels as appetizers, followed by the enchiladas and chopped salad! ANGELA was our wait person and she was fantastic. It was our first time at this location, and ANGELA knew her stuff and guided us to all the right choices! Don't sleep on this one!!

Yelp
I came here last weekend with my family and was very impressed with the food and service. I had one of the best drinks I've ever had from a restaurant in the area. The atmosphere was great , easy to get to and it was nice to walk around the gardens after our lunch. We will definitely be back !

Yelp
This new restaurant at the entrance to the lovely Descanso Gardens is a wonderful addition to the foothills. Service was impeccable, food delicious and the Craftsman vibe with gorgeous timbers from the garden makes for a special experience.

Yelp
As Descanso members who remember Maple, a delicious and really high end restaurant experience, Farmhouse was Super disappointing. They definitely need stronger management to coach up the wait staff and kitchen team. It took 15 minutes to get water, sweet potatoes were rubbery and not salted. No eggs on the menu even when they book reservations early in the day. We noticed the manager was careful not to approach us and ask how we were doing. Instead she spent time chatting with preferred customers. The woman behind the bar unfortunately touched her hair several times as she handled drinks. This restaurant needs a lot of time to get routines and train up the staff. We noticed two professional team members who payed attention to the customers, but it didn't make up for about 10 staff who were wandering around and looking clueless. We left hungry and without an opportunity to give feedback. It's too bad they opened before having strong leadership and time to train a professional team.

Yelp
Ate there last night, on a Thursday. Busy but not crowded; there were empty tables. Acoustics in the room are poor, making it hard to have conversation at table except with the person immediately next to you. Service was very slow, but the server was very pleasant and did fulfill our order correctly, just ve-r-r-r-r-y slowly. Not all of that was the kitchen's fault, as it doesn't take the kitchen to bring water and wine. The bread was excellent (although extra, not included), and the butter also. The food actually came pretty quickly after ordering, which makes the fact that my dish (the enchiladas) was barely warm. I ate it anyway; it was okay but nothing to write home about. People with me spoke highly of the Asian chicken salad and the pizza. The lemon tart dessert was wonderful, although the shortbread cookie it sits on is sort of ho-hum; perhaps that is deliberate to not take away from the rich flavor of the lemon. They brought us the bill; not outrageous for five people with wine and two desserts. It was when we tried to pay in cash that we were shocked to learn the restaurant does not take cash -- and it will accept only three payments so you can't hand them 5 credit cards and have them split it into equal shares. I then looked at the menu; in very very small print, difficult to read, it mentions the "three payments" thing, but nothing says "no cash." Among other things, that's the sign of an employer who does not trust its employees. I won't be going back. If you are curious about this place, it's worth checking out (be sure to take your credit card!). Once. It's not worth becoming a regular. There's better food elsewhere, even in La Canada.

Yelp
My bestie and I have been (separate family) members of Descanso for years and years. Today we went to lunch to try Farmhouse, the new restaurant there. I had been to The Farmhouse in Newport Beach, and enjoyed it. Today didn't disappoint. We asked to sit outside because the weather was great. While the restaurant may be ironing out a few kinks, we didn't see any. Our server Angela couldn't have been nicer, and recommended the pizza and short ribs. We added the Farmhouse Salad and shared everything all of which was delicious. Before the meal we had cosmopolitans, and they were well-worth the price! Manager Carol came over a few times to see how we were doing and was very kind. We asked about a kids menu and took a copy of one with us. I can see coming here for dinner with my husband regularly, to enjoy cocktail, small bites and/or a nice dinner.

Yelp
It's okay.... The food is not what I would have expected based on the Rogers Gardens relationship and fan fair. Operationally you can tell they are still getting the hang of things. I compare it to a little less than proper quality level food with a better environment.

Yelp
This is a lovely place to meet and can accommodate various sizes of groups -- not noisy! (Very important for those of us who like to talk), a wonderful staff, especially our server Jason, from NYC originally. He enlivened our experience and also made excellent recommendations re. the menu. I had the fried sweet potatoes with a spicy dip -- surprisingly good. When I go to Descanso Gardens, I'll plan to grab a drink or bite to eat at the Farmhouse.
