Yelp
First and foremost, I do love this place. Nothing is nicer than to take a lovely walk in Descanso Gardens and then cozy up to the bar here, indoors or out, for a good meal and conversation. It's a wonderful thing and I'm so grateful that Descanso decided to add a restaurant.
That said, I have to admit that this place could be better.
Each time I have a dish, I feel it's, well, good (enough) but NOT great. And why shouldn't it be great?
And the worst part is that, when I tell the staff what it is about a dish that's not to my liking, rather than appreciate my feedback and assure me that they will take it into consideration, I'm left feeling that they are annoyed that I've said something. NOT OK!
Here are some examples: I ordered Grilled Eggplant. Much as I LOVED the presentation and the sauce, the actual eggplant was "al dente" and that's not how it should be! When I mentioned it, the server asked if. wanted a sharper knife. HUH????? One shouldn't need a sharper knife for that dish - it should be prepared properly and cut quite easily!
The Asian salad we got had nice ingredients and looked good but had no flavor. It should make the tongue sing - but instead it fell flat. As they'd say on Top Chef, "not enough acid."
Both the Coiander and Cumin-spiced carrots and Cauliflower steak, again, were not cooked enough. And my first experience there, I was served very pink pork tenderloin when I'd expressly stated that I was concerned that it was cooked enough to make it safe.
Why are they not cooking things fully?
Dishes LOOK GREAT (see attached photo), but the flavors there can be much better. I can't remember which one, but either the eggplant came with no sauce or the Cauliflower so I needed the sauce from one for the other. THAT sauce, whichever it was originally on, was very tasty, but there aren't many other flavors there that I'm really dying to re-experience.
I love that the menu has a good variety including lots of veggie dishes. They are trying and giving it a good go, but still have a long way to go to be the restaurant I know they want to be. I want to LOVE LOVE LOVE this place, I want it to last forever, but they need to do better.
I can't think of anything I've had that I loved and would rush to go back for. But since it's where it is, and the waiters are cute and personable, despite not responding all that well to feedback about the food, I'll continue to be their customer. I really hope it's just growing pains, but please, people, LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS! Take us seriously. Without us, where would you be?
