I'd been seeing posts popping up on Instagram about Farrand Hall, and then I found out that a local pastry chef from GR started working with them. I was intrigued so I decided to look into a dinner there for our ten year anniversary.
As of summer 2024, they do weeknight dinners Wednesday through Friday, with special guest chef dinners on Saturdays. The weeknight dinners are five courses served family style, and I paid $90 per person. Beer and wine are available for purchase on site.
I have to say that the photos don't do this place justice. The owners, Jacob and James, bought the property as a personal weekend getaway spot from their Chicago home, but quickly realized they could do something really special with the space. They live in the house on the property and built out two "barns" - one serves as the kitchen, dining space for colder/inclement weather, retail store, and bar.
We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked in, and my jaw dropped at the decor. It's a bit dark and moody, but still welcoming. We bought a bottle of wine to share during dinner, then walked out to the pergola where a beautiful long table was set for dinner. The "white barn" serves as a lounge space, and looks straight out of an interior design magazine. The design touches are incredible, and I was so impressed by all the details.
We were able to walk around the gardens and property before dinner, and we said hi to some friendly ducks and chickens that were roaming. Then the dinner bell rang and we were welcomed to dinner, with the owners chatting about their story. Then the food started coming out! Everything is served family style, which is personally not my preference, but it does create a shared, friendly atmosphere. The servers were great about indicating how each dish should be shared amongst the table.
The menu changes seasonally and we heard from the chef, who talked about the local farms that they use to source ingredients. Everything was quite delicious and while it wasn't the absolute best meal I've ever had, it was such a fun and beautiful experience that it definitely garnered five stars from me. The coulotte pastrami steak dish was my favorite, and the lamb meatballs were a close second.
Farrand Hall is a 90 minute drive from downtown Grand Rapids, but it was totally worth it for a special occasion. I'd love to go back again someday!
