Where To Eat Around The University of Illinois - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Farren’s opened in 2000 on the outskirts of campus, and for a while maintained its hidden-gem status. These days it’s not so hidden – the secret of the simply amazing burgers is out. Our favorite is The Russell burger, packed with bacon, mushrooms, and an irresistible blue cheese sauce. If burgers aren’t you’re thing, the sandwiches and tacos are also great. Post up at the bar for a quick, easy fix." - adam glass jordan multack and jason kozin

A very nice place for having meals, drinks, hanging out with friends and family. This new location looks upscale than the previous one. The menus looks the same. Maybe they have more drinks options, I guess. The food is very tasty as usual. There is nothing changed for the price. That's good!!!. The staff here are very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very nice and comfy. This is a good restaurant!!!

Google
Love Farren's! One of.my favorite restaurants in town and Im loving the vibes of the new Farren's at the Inman! Great atmosphere and I CRAVE the steak tacos more than anything in the world...oh and the fries!!! I know i need to expand and try other things, but these 2 things are everything good in this world to me!! And really the prices are super reasonable still in this crazy expensive world. The service is great and food (that ive tried at least) DIVINE!!

Google
Tried the Italian beef, steak and cheese, and Santa Fe chicken—everything was solid. The food was flavorful and well-prepared, with portions that hit the spot. The atmosphere is welcoming, with plenty of seating, making it great for groups or just hanging out. It’s in a super central location in Champaign, so it’s really convenient for students, faculty, and visiting parents. The staff were friendly and added to the positive experience. Overall, a great spot! Definitely recommend checking it out if you’re in the area.

Google
Food very good and reasonably priced. Nice sized servings. Even had good vegetarian and a few vegan options for me of hot food - not just a salad- much appreciated. Service was slow but was the restaurant was fairly busy on a Wed night. Seemed noisy - was very hard to hear companions at table - not sure if the noise just echos in there but wasn't that busy that it should have been so noisy. Waitress very well informed on food. Those who ordered a drink received a decent pour for the cost. Will be back!

The cheese curds' breeding was exceptionally deliciously flavorful. We ordered 2 salads and both were huge in size and we could not finish them. They were great overall. The chicken was tasty. The atmosphere was great. Service by Laura was excellent! She listened, assisted with my modifications, was attentive and even recommended a local coffee shoppe after I asked for a specific drink. I wish I took pictures, but I was so hungry and it tasted so good. Thank you.

Google
We were in the mood for good burgers for lunch and heard this place had the best. They did not disappoint. I had the spicy one with the ghost pepper cheese and it was great. My wife had one with mushrooms that looked very tasty. She enjoyed it a lot. Interestingly the table next to us came in and ordered the exact same burgers, so I think we may have made the right choice! My kid loved her chicken strips as well and the cheese curds were great. Awesome food experience.

Google
Visit 2! Food still bad. Beer in a can was okay if not a tad warm. Server was super friendly and helpful. Came by for a burger. Bartender recommended a stout on draft, which I ordered along with cheese curds and the fish 'n chips special. Beer? Good. Curds and fish were clearly not freshly made. Fish was more like fish sticks? And very wet. Fries had that frozen breaded quality. Staff was lovely. Malt Vin in a beauty spray bottle was weird. Beet was good. Probably won't come back.

Google
It took over 20 minutes for anyone to acknowledge our table and take our drink orders, and another 10 minutes to get our drinks. They do not have draft beers, as the original Farren’s was known to have an impressive rotating list. The OG Farren’s used to have the best burgers in town by far. The burgers we received tonight were overcooked, dried out, and not seasoned. Our $10 fried pickle appetizer contained about 8 small soggy pickle sticks, and came out at the same time as our dinner. Very disappointing!!!

Yelp
Food Service Ambience A hidden jewel in the heart of downtown Champaign!!!

Yelp
A restaurant in an upscale hotel that serves average, if large burgers. This restaurant has a reputation for great burgers but our meal does not warrant it. We ordered a variety of items from the menu, including my mushroom burger with all the toppings. The server did not ask how we would like the burgers cooked and they all came out well done. Somehow the thick, quarter pounds of beef were dry across the board, and you could not taste much flavor from the meat as a result. The stack of toppings were mostly juicy on top of the burger but could not penetrate the dryness below. (The sautéed mushrooms were unfortunately dry. How?) Appetizers were typical American fare. The onion rings were good but not remarkably so. The fries that come as a side to the burger were delicious... but they cost five dollars to "upgrade" from store-bought tortilla chips. Why (on both counts)? No need to come back here soon. The meal was too pricey for middle of the road offerings.

Yelp
First thing to know: Farren's has some reserved parking in the lot behind the building. Around spot number 70 you'll see signs indicating which spots are theirs. That being said, Farren's has solid food, a classy atmosphere and friendly staff. I got the Spicoli burger which was pretty good. Needed salt, but I find that's the case with just about any restaurant nowadays. The fries were just okay, but then again, I'm the Fry Snob. Nothing to complain about, just not impressive. I'm sure anyone less bougie about fries will enjoy them just fine. I'd definitely come back to try other stuff from their menu.

Yelp
Farren's moved to its new location and it has such a classy high end feel to it! I had Farren's multiple times 2021-2022 and thought it was the best burgers in CU. It has been a couple of years since I last came and honestly it was just not the same. The burger was dry and it did not taste like the "best burger in CU" that I once remembered. The fries are still amazing and crispy!

Yelp
Always great food and service. The owner who was on the floor is super nice and made sure it was a good experience.

Yelp
I love this place so much. I used to frequent when I lived in Chambana 10yrs ago. I recently went back to visit for work and I HAD to get my favorite burger and cilantro feta pesto on the side. It was all still the same, just new location (for me). I miss this place so much and I'm glad I got to visit again. It won't be my last time.

Yelp
This place used to have phenomenal burgers. I would always order the green chili burger. The burgers have become more bland and dry. The service is good, it's a nice and casual sit down or you can come for a special occasion if you feel like it. But overall, I wouldn't say this place stands out in particular.

Yelp
I know their burgers are good but as a non-burger fan I still like coming here for the different chicken sandwiches, salads and specifically, that ahi tuna appetizer. Always hits the spot!

Yelp
Excellent corner bistro serving a large menu, we loved the burgers! Saturday dinner drop in with four friends to fix our appetites, found friendly service, large oddly European made atmosphere, and good brews and drinks. Enjoyed ourselves and small talk with our waitress, we ordered burgers and could not complain! I did a brisket chili made a perfect drowsy winter day side. My falafel burger was uniquely tasty, lots of going on between the party and various black olives and onions. Highly recommend and the others liked theirs too, wished we had room to try the appetizers and desserts but can see ourselves coming again.

Yelp
Had the mushroom cheeseburger. The goat cheese sauce was very good. Dont recommend the fire burger though. Only taste of jalepenos, felt bland. For people avoiding meat, the mock chicken burger was amazingggg! Hard to believe that that wasnt meat.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped into Farren' s Pub and Eatery while we were in Champaign for a wedding. I was impressed by the look of the restaurant. It's divided into two rooms, a bar area and a dining room area. I got the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries and my husband got the Spicoli burger (hamburger with bacon and caramelized onions) with fresh potato chips. The pulled pork had a great flavor without being overly sauced. The burger had a great fresh taste to it, as did the potato chips. This was a fantastic meal at a really good price. When I come back to Champaign, I will come back. I highly recommend Farren's Pub and Eatery!

Yelp
I have no idea of how I never went here in all my years of undergrad at Champaign. The large tasty menu, very reasonable prices, fun atmosphere, and personal service make this a fun place to visit. The bar is particularly nice, with cool lights and lots of bottles on display to make a cool place to hangout. However, the real standout feature is the food. The Spicoli burger is probably one of the best I've had in the Midwest. The delicious fluffy bun is hardly large enough to fit everything inside. This is why you may want lettuce, tomato, and pickles on the side so that you can enjoy the condensed mountain of flavor you'll get in the fatty bacon, earthy sauteed mushrooms, sauteed onions, and cheese. Surprisingly these don't distract from the very tasty patty itself which is seasoned nicely with a good char on the outside that helps to really seal in the delicious juices inside. Every element of this dish really helps to demonstrate the high quality ingredients from top to bottom. This goes great with their house-made chips which are perfectly crispy and bursting with flavor as well. I was also very impressed with their pulled pork sandwich which is very tender with about the perfect amount of fat and a flavorful sauce as well. This goes well with the crispy and delicious sweet potato waffle fries. Overall, they do American comfort food well and provide an elevated version of your favorite dishes that's certain to delight your palate.

Yelp
Hit or miss affair. It seems half the time, Farren's leaves us stunned with their flavor, portion size, and service; the rest of the time, they miss something in our order, leave things out, or just flat out underwhelm us. It is akin to a split-personality. We have only done take-out from Farren's, always on a Wednesday evening. Maybe they offer a better and more consistent experience if you order and eat on their premises, who knows. For example, last night we ordered the Motherlode Burger, but it was more of a childlode, as the burger did not have much flavor and hardly had any bleu cheese on it - it did not wow me like past Farren's burgers. Additionally, we had their Strawberry Chicken Salad, yet they did not give us the dressing for it, and there were just four tiny slices of a strawberry included. If they could take their take-out orders more seriously (yes, that is a pun), then we have an easy 5 stars.

Yelp
Went to this burger joint over the holiday break. Unfortunately understaffed but the ladies did a great job . Burger was great . I had the bacon cheeseburger with blue cheese. The ambiance was pretty cool I like all the plants in the dining room .

Yelp
Don't waste your money on a dirty establishment with unprofessional staff. We waited an hour for our table. FOH made us wait in line to seat, and decided to give our table away. She then threatened to throw us out when we complained that she would not wait on us. She also then finally sat us and proceeded to warn our waitress about us being a "bad group." Finally we got waited on and they weren't serving draft beer! Then, our burgers arrived and every persons burger was dry and overcooked! For $20 please just spend your money at an establishment that cares about their clintele like "The Space." Frankly, would give 0 stars if possible. Finally, the bathrooms were filthy and the trash was overflowing.

Yelp
A good American-style burger restaurant to go downtown! I went in without any waiting time this noon, guided by a very friendly server. The vibes inside made me very comfortable, with many pretty chillin songs in their song list. I remember the food I ordered was: A half order of Onion Rings, and The Spicoli Burger with sweet potato fries as the side. They were well-cooked, especially, the beef was really juicy. It cost me around 25 including tips for this meal, which I think is reasonable. Nevertheless, I still hope the taste of their food could be further developed, and wish I could see more special items on the menu in the future!

Yelp
Love the food and staff ! Been going there for years. Mushroom and spinach sandwich is my favorite

Yelp
This happened to me about couple of years ago. I wanted meet my friends for lunch, so we decided to have lunch here. I arrived first and it was busy. There were few people waiting to be seated. I understand it was lunch time, and I would have to wait. There was no sign in list, so the order was completely visual.. older lady who was in charge of seating looked at me with displeasure and then decided to pass me and proceeded to seat the people behind me. Those people pointed out to her that I was there first. I wanted to thank those people but didn't get a chance. My entire experience was already ruined by this lady. I won't go back.

Yelp
This place was great!! I loved my burger, I got The Russell Burger. The sauces were good and the bacon and burger meat was cooked perfectly. The onions rings are a decent size and are nice on the crunch! Also had a few drinks and shots! Try the pickle back!! It was great after our shot! Service was great as well! When our waitress was busy making drinks, other employees checked in on us and took our drink orders. Next time I want to sit on the bigger side! I love the ambiance and how bright it is in there.

Yelp
My son and I went here Friday night and really enjoyed it. The restaurant was busy when we got there and we added ourselves to the waiting list. It was a lovely evening in Champaign so we went for a stroll until they texted us that our table was ready. It was a good system and we only waited about 10 minutes. There were a lot of creative burgers to choose from as well as a nice array of other pub food. I ended up getting the burger with chiles and pepper jack on it; and it was a tasty burger. The sweet potato fries were decent, but I'm not sure they were worth the upgrade. The space itself was nice and it also had a massive bar with several TVs. And it was in a cool little part of downtown Champaign that features a few more bars, pubs, and restaurants. This really more of a 4.5 star review than a 4 -- if you're in the Champaign area and you want a burger that is elevated far above the typical choices, Farren's is a great option.

Yelp
Good food. Recommend the tuna and cheese balls. Service was good for the most part. I was just off put that the second we walked in and up to the hostess station, one of the servers told us to move out of the way because they also use the front door to get to their tables outside, which seems inefficient.
google avatar

Travis M.

Yelp
Seven years ago I went to their old location. The burger was great and vibe was original. I came back today for the first time to their new location. It's basic and boring. Then came the burger that I had told my family and friends how good it was. Come to find out. It was bad. They didn't even ask how I wanted it. I'd be surprised if it wasn't a frozen patty. No one in my party finished their burgers. I get restaurants are very hard to run and difficulties can arise. That being said how can this place had fallen so far. I hate to say this because I seriously hate to given in to corporate bullshit, but seriously if you want a burger go to five guys or some shit. Actually you're better off with a cast iron and your own bought beef. Beer was good but whatever.

Angela D.

Yelp
Just yum. Always good. Always friendly. Great red wine selection. Hummus appetizer was fresh and delish.

Yelp
The food was very tasty and the service was friendly. We would definitely patronize this restaurant more frequently. The atmosphere is relaxed and chill. Enjoy yourself.

Yelp
I really wanted to try this place since everyone raves about the food. I was left disappointed. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and what I got was a bland burger with NO condiments on it (do you have to ask for condiments on your burger? Am I missing something?) Thank god I ordered ranch on the side. Your $14 burger doesn't come with fries, it comes with chips. Who eats burgers with chips? They charge $2 more to sub fries. I think I'll stick to other local burger places. This place is way overpriced for what you get. The two stars is really more for the service which is excellent.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. We just finished up a few minutes ago (7:30 pm 6.6.23) The service is almost second to none. Sage was a wonderful waitress, providing exceptional service and conversation. The food? As good or better than the best options in the C-U metro. We sat outside and that didn't affect our service whatsoever. It was quick, very friendly, and they're willing to converse about other local spots. Again, Sage is a rockstar and provided some of the best service I've experienced in my 2 1/2 years in the C-U area. 10/10. Always recommend!!

Yelp
Excellent burgers unique character with an friendly atmosphere! If you haven't tried Farren's you are missing out on an experience you will not forget.

Zachary L.

Yelp
Fluxuates from the best food available downtown to passable. No business and super busy days I've received typical restaraunt quality cooked food and meh it's service done right. Mildy- to very busy days I've had incredible meals. Always professional, possibly too much for my liking, but it should be the norm.

Yelp
Farren's has been in the area for quite a few years. This was the first time I've been to the location in the old Radio Maria spot. I remembered it being ok, but people obsess about the burger. Unfortunately, I feel the place has gotten worse, especially the burger. My buddy and I came here early Friday night. We were excited to try the burgers as they have raves about. He also had a gift card from his AirBnB so double bonus! We started out with drinks that were fine, but the drinks menu was formatted really oddly. I know that sounds weird, but I was having a hard time understanding my options. We stared with cheese curds that actually were excellent and ended up being the highlight of the dinner. He went with a fish sandwich and I went with the pepper burger. The food came out a bit on the faster side, but my burger was barely warm. Since we had a movie to catch, I didn't belabor the point. Honestly, this wasn't a great burger even if it was warm. I'm not sure if I caught them on a bad night, but this is not even close to the best burger in the area. Newly opened Homegrown blows this one out of the water. My Buddy's fish sandwich was hot and he thought it was ok. With so many great options in downtown Champaign, Farren's should be much better. Instead, they have slipped down to probably the worst meal I had on the trip. We will be going elsewhere downtown. I'm glad we tried it one more time, but no more

Yelp
3.5 stars if I could. I LOVED the scenery. Very industrial modern, lots of beautiful indoor plants. Very trendy feel! Didn't feel like much of a bar at all, in the best way. We were here during covid so each sitting space had some kind of physical barrier. I appreciate the added precautions, and it didn't take away from the aesthetics. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger. I was asked about sides, and cheese, but not about doneness. I almost spoke out but figured it would be cooked to a medium as is generally standard. It was cooked well done which is my least favorite. I prefer completely rare over well done. First couple of bites were juicy and smoky as it was really fresh, but the last few bites and leftovers were not my favorite. The fries tasted really fresh which I enjoyed, and the bacon on the burger was thick cut which is always great! May try again and specify doneness.

Yelp
Went here on a Tuesday eve around 6 pm. Our server was attentive at first and then disappeared when we were ready to order. I had to go inside and find him to place our order. I ordered another drink when I placed my dinner order and after 10 min had to ask another server to find my waiter because I never got the drink. It wasn't that busy so I don't understand why he kept disappearing.

Yelp
TL/DR: Great food, friendly staff, caught some unwarranted shade from the hostess. Came in on graduation day. It's the first graduation here since Covid changed our lives, and I'd wager to say that the city is on edge. It's a crapshoot of everyone in town AND their families trying to do the same thing at the same time. We're trying to find some lunch after we take the 45 min to go the 0.5 miles to get away from the stadium. I don't know this town. Family chose the restaurant. Apparently, we have 2 outside tables being held for just a few minutes, and I get it.... We're hopping out of the car in the middle of the street, speed walking to get there, calling to make sure we got the right location. When we get there, 4 of us are seated at one table, and we hear the hostess is frustrated with us. Not knowing how to approach the situation, some of us stand by an open table while the grad's dad goes in to say we're here. 2 of us are standing there, and another 2 (aunt and grandpa) parking the car. As we are sitting down, the hostess explains that she thought we were all there (as if to express disdain). Wasn't too bad, but I guess we're not off to the best start. We apologize--even though I can see numerous empty tables inside AS WELL AS 2 tables ready for use outside. After a couple minutes, a great waiter comes out to help us. Super nice, helps us with recommendations. Matter of fact, everyone else that came to our table was really kind. Drinks came soon, food was prompt. Everything tasted great! At some point during the meal, the hostess came by and overheard some conversation about the day's events and trying to find a lunch spot. She assumed we were talking about her and said, "Please, go ahead and keep talking about me! It's fine!" I tried to explain that this was really not what was happening. Bottom line, I hope that our food was not contaminated when it came to the table. For the most part, this was a great experience. At the same time, I think any professional should work to make their client base feel comfortable. I'm just trying to have a meal with my family. That's it. Please don't make aggressive comments to my family while we're just trying to enjoy a meal at your business. We're all humans, and we have bad days. I'm not perfect. But if you're working in a college town on graduation day, try to keep it nice. We're all having a little bit of a crazy day.

Yelp
I love this restaurant! Diverse menu, friendly service, caring owner...all are exceptional!

Yelp
Unfortunately a mixed review. Love the high ceilings and overall ambiance. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. If I had eaten alone this place would have gotten 5 stars as the tuna app was very tasty with some surprising spice and the recommended Russell burger was one of the best I've ever had with delicious blue cheese sauce. Unfortunately my wife's salad was bland and below average and my some felt his chicken sandwich was the same.

Yelp
Tucked away in an alley downtown Champaign, this was a great hole in the wall burger joint. You walked down a long ramp to the dining room and begin waiting for a table. There were plenty of tables open but the 2 servers were way too busy to even greet us or tell us where they'd like us to sit. After 10-15min, a server pointed to a table but never said anything to us. A different server stopped by and asked if we were ready to order. They definitely seem way under staffed with 2 cooks, 1 busser who also looks like a cook, and 2 servers. The phone was ringing the entire meal but I never saw anyone actually answer it. The burgers were great and the fries complimented them. It was cooked perfectly and tasted very fresh. I ordered the Russell and it was fantastic. I probably would have preferred a little less sauce or even had it on the side but I loved it. Overall, a great burger joint hidden off the main roads downtown. I'll definitely be back!

Alanie N.

Yelp
Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a solid burger! There sometimes can be a bit of a wait but like most people I assume they're understaffed, the wait staff was super friendly and helpful! I would definitely visit again and would tell people visiting this is a must hit!

Yelp
So glad to be able to provide another 5 star review The blackened chicken tacos were A+! One of the best lunch spots, or dinner for that matter, in all of CU. Highest recommendation

Dianna T.

Yelp
Was in town for a meeting and stopped by here off a recommendation from a customer. Hands down, burgers were so good! The fries weren't really anything to write home about, but that's okay. One thing that's unfortunate is that we stopped in on a Tuesday night and the service was soooo slow and not that great. Fortunately, we had just gotten in town and we're starving (after flying in from Chicago). Parking is tricky if you're an out of towner like us. Be sure to download their town's parking app.

Cole E.

Yelp
Undoubtedly the best burgers in champaign. Plenty of variations and they have a decent beer selection as well. The wings here are also great!

Hunter A.

Yelp
The cheese curds were very average not bad but definitely like they came out of a frozen bag not great. Ambiance was ok also kinda small. Burger and fries were great also blue cheese sauce was awesome. Service was good nothing special but solid. If cheese curds were better would've been a 5.

Yelp
Great local casual food spot. Just moved here and this hit the spot. Love the decor/vibe and food and service were amazing.

Yelp
Ate at Farren's with a big group. Food was excellent and would strongly recommend the sweet potato fries.

Yelp
Best burgers in town - that hasn't changed since the move to the new location. But the vibe and service are just not the same. Sometimes bigger isn't better.

Yelp
Burgers galore! This place is the place to go for burgers. I had heard only good things about Farren's burgers and had high expectations. Those expectations were definitely met. I was with a group of six people and we expected a long wait, but we got lucky and were seated right away. Nice! They have a section for all sorts of burgers and they all sound really interesting. You can customize your cheese, toppings, sides, and extras. You really can order your burger the way you exactly want it. It was a busy evening and it took us a while to order, but after we ordered our food, the food came out pretty quickly. I really appreciated how all the food came out at the same time. It's always awkward when one person gets food earlier than some and their food gets cold from waiting. The burger was super juicy and the quality of meat was excellent. I substituted the chips for the fries (per a friend's recommendation) and thought the fries were mediocre. They were a bit soggy for my taste. Otherwise, everything was really good and the best part is that it's affordable! No need to dish out a lot of money for a good burger.

Yelp
Hostess was extremely rude. Would not seat us as we were missing 2 from our party of 10 (arrived 10 mins later). Tables empty throughout restaurant. Finally sit and it's a burger joint. Horrible

Yelp
This was not the place we were headed but you know those scenes out of a cartoon where the characters smell something and the little thought bubble with food pops up above their head and their nose goes up in the air and they start smelling the food? We'll that's what happened. Best change of mind ever. The waitress was great and the food was amazing.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious burger. Having been here three times, I have yet to order one that I regret. Pubs are built on their atmosphere: Farren's has one full of bustle, energy and friendliness. Sometimes it'd be so busy that the waiter would take longer than usual, but for a place so small to be flooded with customers, it's par for the course. Definitely recommend getting the Russell if it's your first time here. The bleu cheese sauce makes that burger. They have in-house ranch that goes absolutely fantastic with fries if you're the type to do that (I certainly am). Would highly recommend you try out ghost pepper cheese if you like a spicy kick in your burger as well. It's quite literally the best cheese I've had in a burger, along with the best burger I've had in the area hands down.

Yelp
I miss the old Farrens. It's not even close to the magic that once was. The food is overpriced and poor quality. The service was ok. Outside tables are nice.
