"Fat Boy Drive-In has come under new ownership; the decades-old mainstay had been on the market for a year and a half as owners Ken and Jeanne Burton planned to retire after 36 years. Mike Jerome, who co-owns Brunswick’s Portland Pie Co. and Bolos Kitchen Cantina and Candlepin, is the new owner and plans to open Fat Boy for the season any day now. As he told the Portland Press Herald, Fat Boy’s drive-in design lends itself perfectly to the current crisis and may help offer 'some normalcy and some excitement ... [to customers] sitting in the safety of their car, just like they have for 65 years.' To start, the menu will be limited in an effort to keep the kitchen staff small and properly distanced from each other, but classics like lobster rolls, frappes, and BLTs will definitely be available." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

The onion rings were outstanding. The burgers were pretty good but not great. It has a great ambiance as it’s a throwback drive up spot. The service was great as well.

Great staff and service. The clam dinner was average. The serving size for the price was below average at best. Would you pay 25$ for the food pictured?

The food is always so good and decently priced. I hadn't been in years and was in town and had to stop in. Never disappoints. Lobster roll fresh and decent price compared to most places and burger and onion rings ALWAYS amazing

Google
Good atmosphere, I love that they have kept their roots! Good burger and excellent onion rings!

Google
Great food and service the old fashioned drive in is alive and well here in Brunswick Maine and I am happy to know that. The taste and quality of the food was wonderful and I will return to experience it soon. The service was spot on and enjoyed a trip down memory lane. A must have for people who grew up in 50sthru the 70's. See you there...

We stopped by this institution to eat at a real, old-school drive in and weren't disappointed. Service was friendly, food was tasty, and the joint was old. Cool. The lobster roll was tasty, the fried scallop basket was good, and the onion rings were the star.

Google
I RARELY leave critical reviews, because frankly, I would eat just about everything. Fat Boy Drive in is the exception. Man, oh man was this gross(save for the onion rings!). FOOD: Fries were cold and undercooked. Burger was probably the worst burger I have ever had. It tasted like the what I assume was the uncleaned cook top. Service: Imagine if the Lost Boys from Neverland worked at a restaurant. Clearly a bunch of unmanaged and underpaid kids on Summer break. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs.

Google
AMAZING onion rings! Yummy lobster and crabmeat rolls! Love the car side service, and very little has changed since I was a young girl. Great food and memories!

Yelp
Always the best fast food joint in Brunswick! This is the real deal drive in restaurant, with waitstaff that come to your car to take and deliver your order. Typical drive in food, except it's Maine and you have tasty lobster rolls as part of the traditional menu. And they are very good here! Nicely toasted bun, plenty of lobs tag with a tasty mayo dressing. Burgers, shakes and fries. Oh my! They're all great and service, too!

Yelp
Unbelievable, the writing was on the wall for the fat boy ( new owners ) the parking lot told the story , but despite the obvious the owner seems to either not care or has so much money he just needs a write off . Totally disgusted, over priced food , ambience totally destroyed . I gave it one other chance last summer and I simply had to throw the food out and drive away . My 10 yr old granddaughter who absolutely loved the fat Boy before the sale couldn't even eat the high priced garbage they are trying to sell . I can't imagine the genius who bought a much loved iconic drive in restaurant since the 50s and Decided to change everything about it , except any attempt to maintain and upgrade the Bld. Or preserve the much loved reputation it had maintained for over 60 yrs . I would strongly encourage anyone from stopping, hoping for anything resembling prior memory's experience . You will be sadly disappointed and feeling disgusted at the insulting quality of food and the ridiculous prices they are asking for their downgrade in quality!

Yelp
Called ahead and the person answering the phone could not be bothered to check for food allergies because it was behind some boxes and they were busy. So we kept driving.

Miles S.

Yelp
Specializing in the classics of burgers and fries, while expanding to crab rolls and more this 50's style joint is a great stop in Brunswick. You can order from the comfort of your car if you choose which is a classic touch. The vintage sign pointing directly to the oversized kitchen with sizzling skillets will make you feel at home. Make sure you also get dessert, they have some great shake options.

Amy V.

Yelp
Fat Boy has "re-opened" again, for the summer season. Car Hop service is back! My burger was delicious as ever. They brought back the thin hand battered onion rings, but sadly took away the sweet potato fries (which are my daughters favorite!) Oh! They serve beer and wine now. Fun for the adults, just dont drive

Gigi M.

Yelp
A long time favorite, we went today and they have clearly made some changes- pretty much all for the better! Burger was tasty! Raspberry Frappe (shake) was amazing! Fries needed a little more seasoning, but we're still decent. Highly recommend!!

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Fat boys was always a tradition for us so when we were so close today we had to stop. Really hate to say this but never again! The onion rings were very thick and heavily breaded, as well as over cooked we just threw them away. The whopper burgers were on a hard dry bun and were pretty tasteless. The place is so overall rundown it is sad. There are so many other kept up places to stop in i just don't know how they keep going. I guess some traditions need to change....

Ad S.

Yelp
I ran into this place and frankly I found it very hospitable for its very respectful and polite staff and I was given a very huge and testy creamy too. I even wished that I had left some tips for them. Just try it they have pizza too!

Nancy S.

Yelp
I hate to do this but the food was just bad. Hamburgers were thin, not juicy at all and basically tasteless. I mean a bubba burger is better. Fries were ok. Milkshake was icey, not creamy. Kids working there are very nice and they hustled and are the reason for an extra star.

Jim F.

Yelp
I used to come here under the previous ownership and today, I must say, was an epic disappointment. Not only are they cutting corners with their portions, but they changed the sauce on their Whopper. It tasted bland. Significantly smaller in size than before and the onion rings were inedible in my opinion and tasted like seafood. $40 for two whoppers, two fountain drinks and one thing is onion rings is ridiculous. And I'm leaving hungry.. Unfortunately, like others have said, this place has lost its appeal. So much history and it's being ruined by new cheap owners. I will not be back.

Yelp
Fat Boy Drive In is an institution in Brunswick. It's an old fashioned drive in, lights on for service and they take your order and serve you in your car. However, there are tables for those who need to get out and stretch their legs. The food is simple American fast food done very well with a few New England signatures added on. Their fries are not my favorite (crinkle cut) but everything else I've had has been great. It's across from the old navel base and watching airplanes come in and out of the airport is fun.

Wendy J.

Yelp
The service was good. It did take a little while for the food to be brought out. I ordered a patty melt. I really wish that the hamburger had been grilled. It seemed as if it was steamed. There was really no taste and the hamburger was an all over steamed brownish grey color. The sandwich wasn't cut in half, which would have been helpful. The white bread was toasted and very buttered. I had asked for raw onions. They were chopped and kept falling off of the hamburger onto my shirt. Anyway, I just wish that the hamburger would have been grilled. The prices have really gone up and for the money, the hamburger should be tasty.

Hannah D.

Yelp
My teenage son and I love Fat Boy! I've heard and read the bad reviews but we think it's great. So far we've enjoyed the friend clams, burgers, and chicken tenders. We'll be back!

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Good burgers and fries delivered right to the car! Little on the greasy side, but we knew that going in. It was a cool treat!

Matthew L.

Yelp
I have only tried Fat Boy once before (pre-Covid times) and wasn't overly blown away so never had the urge to return until tonight. I was all set to visit Five Guys but they were very busy and with 2 small kids it isn't easy waiting for food in a restaurant so I thought, let's give Fat Boy a try. The young lady who came to take my order was wonderful and did a great job. However sadly that was the lone bright spot. I ordered a double whoper burger, onion rings, kids hot dog meal and a side of cole slaw. Let's start by saying I am not sure if it is due to corner cutting as others have mentioned or not but the burger definitely had the look and taste of a frozen Ballpark (or other generic company) patty. No meat flavor. The "special sauce", which i have heard used to be better, was barely on the bun and was not noticed at all. To say it was an utter disappointment is an understatement. The fries were super soft and soggy (ok I took my order to go and drove the 4 mins home so maybe that's on me a little) but they were either fried hours before or barely reheated when ordered. The onion rings tasted of nothing but oil, like everything was greasy. The hot dog was, a hot dog. My kids ate it, i guess that's a win?? The cole slaw was easily the least seasoned and bland slaw I have had in my 42 years alive. Service, besides the cheerful server, and her partner who brought the food out, was, in my opinion slow. I thought Fat Boys was quick but over 20 mins when not super busy seemed a little much. I gave 2 stars for the young ladies working there otherwise it would easily be 1 star. We won't be giving Fat Boy a third try.

Yelp
Headed over to Fat Boy a few days after their glorious re-opening on Memorial Day weekend! The parking lot was very crowded and a little bit confusing when we drove in. There were a lot of cars parked outside of the main space, farther back in the parking lot and a few openings right around the building. I was not sure if cars were waiting to pull into those spaces, but since nobody was moving, I pulled right in. Given the crowd, I was happy to see someone come to the car within minutes to give us menus and instruct us to turn the car lights on when we were ready to order. I turned the car lights on once we settled on a cheeseburger, onion rings and a few beverages, and our waiter was back in under a minute. Once we put our order in, she let us know that it would be about 20 minutes for the turn around, and as we were not on a tight schedule, we decided to wait. We were so happy to see our food coming toward us on that old school car window tray! Burger was solid and the onion rings were battered, they was I like them. We hung for awhile eating and then turned the lights back on to pay. Overall fun experience. I am so happy that new owners have taken over, it would have been so sad to see this local landmark fade into a rusty ghost town. Updated menu pictures posted in photos.

Yelp
I would just set your expectations pretty low. The vibe is really neat, being a drive-in straight out of the past, with the tray on your window, old school food options, etc. The servers are super friendly and helpful. The food is just meh.... but honestly, what do you expect? It's likely a summer job for teenagers and college kids that aren't training for the Culinary Institute of America. It's burgers and fries that are edible, but not amazing. On our visit, the burgers were pretty good... serviceable, I would say. Hot dog was better, fries and the thiccccc shake were the star, and take it from me, don't try to get cute and get their Canadian BLT with canadian bacon. That was more like barely warmed Taylor Ham. I'm not a big fast food guy, but I remember Five Guys burgers being far superior, just in lamer setting. If you're in the area and want to stop by to say you did, it's okay, but I had heard many stories over the years about how amazing Fat Boys was, and it's clear that ship has sailed.

Yelp
2020 opening date is Saturday, May 16th! During Covid social distancing classic drive ins are perfect. Located about 5 min / 1.5 mi from Downtown Brunswick / Bowdoin. They created their Whoper before Burger King did. Used to be cash only but new ownership this year will be accepting cards!

Charlie W.

Yelp
Food was really good and very close to original. Had the scallop basket, lobster roll and woper burger. The frappes are delicious. Service was friendly sky and fast!

Su L.

Yelp
Pretty good for a fast food place. We'd never been to a drive-in place before and enjoyed the nostalgia of it. The servings were medium sized, and decently priced. The lobster roll was served on soft brioche bread, with a generous heaping of mayo. Super delicious. The haddock nuggets were good, and deep fried well without being oily. The onion rings and vanilla frappe were mediocre- would not recommend. Service was friendly and pleasant. Would recommend a visit for the experience.

Laura K.

Yelp
Super cute place! Very friendly staff. Great bang for your buck. Stopped by on our travels up Route one. Was not disappointed!!

Yelp
Service was lovely at pickup which I appreciate. As a Brunswick native, I'm so sad about this place! The paint is moldy and peeling off the building, the inside has no organization (like a pick up counter of some kind?) and it's filthy but in a way like it needs to be gutted and renovated-no amount of cleaning will improve. You just walk into a pit of despair and sign the receipt on the filthy door, I guess that's the new improved business model. The food is trash- just like not cared about. Burger was ok but bun was watery/greasy. The fries are awful-you can get a better style or brand of French fry pretty easily. It's sad that whoever bought this place never ate here originally, and doesn't give a crap about it or the customers. It used to be the best part about summer in Brunswick and a great place for kids to make cash. There was one car in the parking lot at noon in July, so if it makes it until next year here's hoping it gets the love it deserves.

DJ L.

Yelp
Had been here years ago but never wrote a review. We were here for lunch yesterday, I had a tuna roll, onion rings and black raspberry shake, my wife had cheeseburger and fries...fries were a bit soggy but that might be because she did not take them out of the container right away. I liked my tuna roll, onion rings and shake, but DAMN, the onion rings were the best ones I have ever had anywhere!

Amanda A.

Yelp
Back in the day, I LOVED this place. So many memories. The food was never gourmet but man was it yummy! It was the place to go. Often times it was hard to find a place to park it was so good. Quite literally, this place was hopping! Over the years I would frequently travel back to Brunswick just to go to Fat Boys and have their signature grub. Well, it's been far to long since I have been able to return to this once wonderful spot and it has gone downhill so bad I will not be returning. I had no idea in 2020 the previous owners sold it to someone who has no clue how maintain its charm let alone it's quality. The building is in disrepair. Inside is dirty. Trust me. The tables have been removed and the walls have layers of grease on them. Paint everywhere is chipping, the same old signage is being used it had 30 + years ago. Which I will admit, At first I found to be kind of neat. Oh Fat Boys how I had missed you. But I soon realized as my dining experience continued this wasn't about nostalgia; this was about neglect. The food: the cheeseburger was exactly how I remember. YUM. So was the black raspberry milkshake. I guess I am grateful for that but not sure it was worth the experience. The fried scallops were tough and fried in old tasting oil. We went around 4 pm so I wouldn't consider it to be the end of a busy day's oil. Frankly everything fried we got was subpar. Our waitress delivered our food and there wasn't enough salt or sauce (there were 3 of us). So we turned on our lights for service as the sign indicates (and as has always been the case). Well, our waitress never came back. The other waitress caring for the other side of the parking lot kept caring for her 3 cars but never told our waitress our lights were on and we were in her plain sight. My friends and I were a little disheartened by the fact we had given our waitress a large tip (you pay when you get the food) yet she never even came back to see if we were ok? I went inside to explained after 40 mins of no service and asked for a return of the tip for lack of service. Immediately the waitress who was caring for the other 3 cars looked at me and started yelling at me. "I can't, I can't. She is a new waitress and I am not dealing with you". She said some other rude things I can't recall from being in shock because she was literally yelling at me. Mind you, I did not go in there guns a blaring. I was purposefully being professional and stating facts and providing feedback. This waitress then started talking to the owner who did nothing about his wait staff yelling at me. I looked at him and I looked at her and him and her again with my mouth closed as she was literally yelling at me for merely bringing to their attention my waitress never checked on me nor came to my car when my lights were on for over 40 mins. I was dumbfounded. I let her yell because what was I going to do? Start yelling back? Once she was done I did ask the owner if this is what he called customer service? He literally rolled his eyes, sighed and explained he has had a shortage of workers and asked how he could help me. He was not empathetic, he was not concerned his employee had just gone up one side of me and down another while I stood there quiet. I calmly explained the situation to him and he went hastily to the cash register and gave me the tip money back. I gave 1/2 of it back to him and told him it's not like she didn't do anything but she certainly didn't work for the percentage initially given to her. I wasn't trying to be an. And I walked out. As we left, our waitress was helping another car and as we drove by this girl literally yelled obscenities at us as we drove by. We didn't stop, I didn't bother tell the owner because obviously he didn't care. This was made clear by the way he allowed the other waitress to yell at me. I used to work customer service jobs. I can't imagine EVER treating a customer this way, let alone my manager being okay with it. Short staffed or not. I don't doubt they have have had staffing issues but there weren't more than 6 cars total in the parking lot with 2 waitresses total while we were there. I am not sure this was a valid excuse for not receiving service considering waitresses in sit down establishments actually have more customers and check on their tables way more frequently than this girl did. Of course now that I am home, I have looked up recent reviews of Fat Boys and have actually found another review of a waitress yelling at a customer. Is yelling at your customers really worth keeping your doors open? Since when is this okay? Idk what else to say. RIP Fat Boys

Sarah R.

Yelp
The quality has gone so far down hill, this was likely our last visit. Two fish fillets were served cold without cheese, tartar or lettuce. When I went to ask for toppings, I was handed two containers of ranch? Onion rings tasted old and freezer burned. Frappes had no flavor. And for $47 before tip?? No thanks. Sad times to see an institution degrade like this.

Cathy T.

Yelp
Have not been there in a very long time and we stopped in because we were headed to China Rose but they were closed. Decided to try the chicken tenders. In the past we have almost always done burgers... so... adventuresome we were... well, dissapointed... they were good white meat chicken for sure, but chopped and formed into uniform pieces. good flavor but to pay $10.99 for formed chicken fingers and fries was a bit much... at least we got 6 of them!!! I did my basket with onion rings and they were also kind of dissapointing.. kind of a floury texture.... nothing was greasy though so I will have to give credit for that!!! They do a great job of changing their oil. just wow... two chicken baskets and one shake to share was $32.00 plus tip... Geez.....

Tricia H.

Yelp
What happened to Fat Boy's? Just 2 cars in the parking lot was a clue. 12/11/20, 12:00 ordered Fish and Chips $16.00. Received two 'very very thin' square strips of fried fish and fries completed the container. Pathetic. Looking back on it, should have handed it back. This isn't acceptable serving fish like this in Maine.

Jay P.

Yelp
Pulled in on a whim during Christmas shopping and ordered by phone as instructed. Never looked at the online menu as I just wanted a couple of small cheeseburgers, fries and a Pepsi. Food came quickly brought out to me by a very pleasant and nice young lady. The food? Simply awful. Dreadful. Inedible. And $20 bucks plus a $5 tip. The cheeseburger was paper thin and had had all semblance of moisture removed. Dry. As. A. Bone. The three bites I ate were completely flavorless. Nothing. Except maybe a remnant of flavor from cardboard packaging that once held it. The fries were well and truly overdone. Hard, brittle, dry and only mildly warm. I ate one bite of one fry. I threw out all of the fries and one and three-quarters of the cheeseburgers. The Pepsi was delicious. I travel the coast of Maine for my job and eat at various roadside places throughout the state. Worst place ever. My 2 cents.

Margie H.

Yelp
This has been a favorite since I started going in the 1980's. The other day was the worst. Our waitress had a guy friend show up right next to us and they talked to each other the whole time. Then they were joined by another employee who started to smoke a cigarette right by our car as we were eating. I ended up having her take the tray and we moved out of the parking lot to eat our undercooked burgers. Not a good experience with new owners!!!

Claudio C.

Yelp
I really wanted to rate this higher. Classic car hop drive in. First timer. We each ordered a Whopper burger, we split some fries, and I got some coleslaw. Nothing stood out to me. Flat top burger...nothing fancy with the bun...and it was a bit greasy and over cooked. Fries were way over oily...a fat bomb for anyone eating close to a half serving. Service was good, staff was friendly. I thought the food was overprices for below average technique and food quality. I'm two and a half stars here. Sorry.

Erica O.

Yelp
Ordered the $8 patty melt burger. This is a photo of the burger I received. I would not recommend going here. Cheap overpriced food

Chew B.

Yelp
After loving Fat Boy for decades, then experiencing a drop in quality a few years ago, and then our horrible experience in 2020 under new ownership we swore we would never return, we gave it another shot on Saturday, 3027-2021... Our initial impression was highlighted by a totally awesome wait person and we ordered without even looking at a menu. We then debated what the cost of our meal would be and were within 5 bucks of our informal "guestimate". Yes the prices skyrocketed but so have prices on everything else and so we accepted our somewhat expensive fate without complaint. So be it. As for the food, the cheeseburgers are slightly larger than we remembered but were a bit dry and cooked not only through (safe) but a bit beyond what is necessary. However they tasted fine and were of sufficient quality for a drive in stand. The fries were what we both termed "blah", which to us means acceptable but nothing we would order again. My wife also ordered a grilled hot dog which she liked a lot and said she would order again. We had a black and white shake which was "good" and served as desert. The star of the meal were the onion rings and next time we will have a double order. The rings were as they were in former years (with the crappy exception of 2020) and were outstanding. We will return again. Kudos for fixing the problems that initially tanked in 2020 and I expect 2021 to be a far better year for the new ownership.

Matt F.

Yelp
Born and raised in Brunswick and Fat Boy Drive In is a fixture and a source of excitement when they open for the season. They closed last year and now have reopened under new ownership. As a local I was hopeful they'd keep with the same menu and traditions. So here's a breakdown of the good, bad and the ugly. Good: Menu items seem to have stayed the same. Lots of familiar staff returning and the nostalgia is like they never closed. We order frappes and they still tastes exactly the same. And you can finally pay with plastic, no more cash only. That's a bonus Bad: we all hate to see prices go up, but let's face it, it's going to happen. But with that being said the menu prices have jumped up significantly more than the usually 10%-15% we usually see when they start their new season. Ugly: if you were hoping for their famous and well know onion rings and BLTs, currently I'm sorry, you will not find it there. I received the cookie cutter, pub style, right from the freeze onion rings. And the BLT was on a seeded bun. I voiced my disappointment and was advised that currently they are unable to make their trademark, handmade onion rings because of the flour shortage during this COVID pandemic. That makes sense because I haven't been able to find flour anywhere but they should probably disclose the subpar substitution when people order them. As they work through new ownership, COVID safeguards, and other hurdles I'll revisit again in time for a another try.

DM D.

Yelp
I'm heartbroken to change this to a two star review, but I have no choice. The new ownership has changed things and not for the better. The food is not the same quality as it was. I've had the Whoper burger a couple times and the meat was bland, and rubbery both in texture and taste. The onion rings were supposed to be the old style rings and while they were prepared the same, they didn't taste the same. I think they are using different food vendors than the previous owners. There are much better local options for everything on the menu now both in terms of quality and price. The food is edible, but barely. It's a far cry from what it used to be. The food isn't great but the prices they are charging are just plain awful. Many items are at least a dollar or two more than they used to be. This would be fine if they were improved, but that's not the case here. The waitstaff are polite, patient, and helpful as they've always been. This is the only reason this review is two stars. It would be one star if it was just about the food.

Mark M.

Yelp
Felt like I was in Grease or some 1950's movie. A real old fashioned Drive-In with car hops and everything! It was pretty packed, so it took about 20 minutes for our meal. Onion rings were fantastic. Fried clams were pretty good too. Frappe was painful; too cold to drink fast but too good not to. I still feel like my brain is a bit frozen!

Gary H.

Yelp
Wow, this place has gone down hill since my last visit 12 years ago. Not much to say about this place. Service was good, but food was lacking in flavor, quality and size. My hamburger was very small. I ordered the Royal burger basket and I was expecting a large juicy burger. What I got was a small 1/8 pound burger with nothing on it but mayo and ketchup. No lettuce, tomatoes or anything. Fries were good. Drinks were so small that is would be better labeled as a kids size, not a regular. Very disappointed to say the least. It gets 3 stars as it looks the same as it used to. Cone on Fat Boys, offer a real meal here would you

Joe J.

Yelp
Woohoo, Fat Boy is back open!!!!! The menu seems to be the same for the most part, but they have added a mango veggie burger which looks awesome. They have also added some new staff as well as some familiar old faces to the team. We went there yesterday for the soft opening with my wife and kids. All the food was perfect, and our servers were super friendly and excited to be back open. So glad they have set up credit card payments this year. It makes it so much easier. Good luck team, I think you'll do a great job!

Sam D.

Yelp
This place is a family favorite. We almost always stop here on our way back from the beach. It's an old school drive up restaurant. You turn your headlights on for service. The waitress brings you a menu, you look it over, you place your order and they bring it to your car window on a rack. After you're done, you turn your headlights back on and the waitress will take the rack and garbage from you. The food is your basic burger, hot dog, fried food, and shake joint. They have a pretty large menu to choose from. Most often the service is quick and you're in and out. But our most recent visit wasn't the best. We waited 55 minutes for our food on a Friday night. Does this happen? Yes. But our waitress didn't tell us the wait would be so long. We didn't find out until we heard her tell another car. This is a seasonal place. You can choose to go into the restaurant at eat at a table. They have about 6 tables; I imagine the wait adds up quickly. This is a cash only establishment.

Diane G.

Yelp
Sucks since new ownership. Bring back old crinkle fries!!! Frappe recipe seems ok, but bring back old fries!!

Alexandra S.

Yelp
Finding this place was a cool surprise. You'll be more inclined to think this place is cool if you can actually remember when these kinds of drive-ins were regular roadside fixtures in small town USA...which without dating myself too badly I hope, I do vividly recall. This place has stood the test of time in lovely Brunswick. During our recent visit, the place was hopping so it's clearly still a popular place to grab some food. Just like in the hey-day of drive ins, you pull your car into a spot and turn on your headlights indicating you want car-side service. Out comes the car-hop! Not on roller skates like some places used to have but still out she comes right to the driver's side door. The menu is the Maine version of old school drive in items so in addition to burgers and hot dogs you can get lobster and crabmeat rolls, fish sandwiches and Maine crab cakes. We both tried the lobster rolls and the onion rings. The onion rings were hot, crisp and freshly made. The lobster rolls were good but I could have done with less mayo. The prices here are pretty retro too...very easy on the wallet. There are a few tables inside as well if that's your preference. It's a bustling beehive of activity in the open kitchen in there. It looked like all the cooks were adults and all the car-hops were teens. The inside could do with a bit of sprucing up. Retro is fun but sometimes things do need to be repaired and updated. Nevertheless, this is a fun place for a bite on a coastal Maine road trip.

Yelp
I've heard a lot about this place and was really excited to try it out. It follows the old drive-in eatery rules, where you pull up to the restaurant and turn your lights on to signal you need service. Thankfully, there was a sign to help with that direction. My waitress was delightful. She came out fairly quickly and asked if I needed a menu. I was able to pull up the menu on my phone prior to her getting there to save myself some time. I placed my order and continued to take in the scenery. Now, I understand this is suppose to give an old school vibe, but I've got to say, it could still use some touching up. My food came out in a reasonable amount of time, on a tray that attaches to your car door (once your window is rolled down). I ordered a chicken nugget basket, a small soda and a "whopper" (cheeseburger with veggies). That came to $16 and some change. To my surprise, when I handed the waitress my debit card, I learned they ONLY ACCEPT CASH! I never saw any word of this on their website or any postings of it on the property. This is a big detail to not make completely clear to costumers! After literally counting out change to complete paying my bill, I dig into the food. The chicken nuggets were delicious, but the fries and burger were just OK. The nugget basket also came with some toasted bread that appeared to be cut up hot dog rolls. Those pieces seemed out of place to me, but my 2year old liked them. Now that I know the ropes, I'd give this place another go, but I'd probably try some of the seafood baskets or the fried chicken sandwich since I enjoyed the coating on the nuggets more then the middle of the road burger.

Yelp
Sad to see they almost doubled their price of the whopper and doesn't even come with fries. We've come here for yeeears and won't be making the 45 min drive for the cheap great burgers. Sorry but this isn't "keeping the Tradition alive."

Yelp
Unfortunate that the new owners can't get the "world famous" BLT right - the new buns are an awful choice. Price increase for the same quality? Sure, that's what we had seen over time by the past owners. But the 100% increase in price for a cheeseburger, especially when it's now mostly bun, is extremely disappointing. Hire back the old staff, pay them decently, and make the food the right way.

Yelp
According to locals this is a local staple. You can stay in your car and order and the servers will come out to you, or you can sit inside at one of the few booths. The lobster is fresh and tender and mixed with the prefect amount of mayo. Onion rings are also a must! FYI it's cash only.

Yelp
FIRST TIMER!!!! I adored my experience our waitress was great even in the humidity I felt so bad. It was fast beyond yummy and great prices. My burger was just one of those I can't put down ones. Then I had a vanilla frappe it hit the spot. Felt like I was in the 60s. Great to be able to eat in my car and have the food brought out in a fun tray. This place is a must.

Yelp
In light of the recent articles in regards to Mr Jerome buying and continuing Fat Boys, my opinion is that he ruined an iconic institution...it is far from the original...I was so disappointed with the menu, the food...it is such a shame...(this is the same as how Cole Farms in Gray ME ...another iconic institution was ruined)

Yelp
Super charming place, with vintage awnings*, quick service and nice no-frills menu. My cheeseburger was OK and my Coke might have been Pepsi, but the price was right. I think I'll try the fried clams or the lobster roll next time. *Really the whole building looks like it could have been exactly the same in 1958, but it's well maintained.

Yelp
This "was" an all time Favorite now it is awful, how do you ruin a BLT, onion rings, fries, jack the prices have two flavors of Frappes, answer sell the place to a franchise owner who is clueless. Guess the new owner can operate a Portland Pie with the same menu at each location with food that is slightly above a Pizza Hut. The fried clams were over priced and absolutely horrible. Go down the street to Gurnet Trading Company, BETTER food prompt service nice local people. New owners suck and so does the food at my old favorite restaurant.

Yelp
Authentic drive-in experience, under new mgt. Service slow, weekday lunch hour. Crabmeat rolls as good as ever...maybe better. Onion rings: nice try, but still need work. Blue Mango burgers for veg aficionados. And yes, the gull is live. It's part of outdoor dining on the coast of Maine.
