This place was AMAZING! My friend and I were looking for somewhere to eat lunch on the 4th of July and we stumbled into Fat Butcher. We were not disappointed. As a Philly native, this is the best cheesesteak I’ve had in Pittsburgh so far! The service was great and we did not have to wait long at all. I will be telling my whole family and all my friends about this place for sure! (And I will be gifting some fresh meat to family from here for sure)

Google
Lawrenceville is lucky to have another great shop. The owners and employees at Fat Butcher are both knowledgeable and kind. I don’t know much about meat and this is a place where they will openly share their knowledge without being the least bit pretentious. The shop itself is clean, well organized, accessible and welcoming. Their pricing was also a lot more reasonable than anticipated, especially for the quality. And don’t let the name throw you - there are plenty of other products even if meat isn’t your thing. From gourmet condiments to house-made sides, broths, etc. And of course drinks and cheese.

Went to fat butcher today to grab some ground beef and breakfast sausage. Made some smash burgers with the 28 day aged ground beef it was fantastic. Looking forward to the breakfast sandwich in the morning! Everyone here is helpful, the meats are fresh, packed well, and it’s clean.

Google
Hands down the best butcher in the city. The staff is extremely knowledge and very helpful. The quality of the meat here is on a different level. They offer a variety of meats including dry aged beef. I’ve gotten several custom orders and have been extremely happy every time. A little on the pricey side, but absolutely worth it for the quality. Highly recommended!

Google
Quality is top-notch. Pricey, but it's a good value as you're getting what you pay for. People nowadays tend to overstate the quality of "boutique" type places - Not the case here. Its the real deal.

Google
This place is solid. My husband and I have (so far) ordered bone-in ribeyes and bone-in pork chops. Both just amazing! Hands down, the best meat we’ve eaten. There’s no need to even go to a steakhouse. :) And the knowledge of the employees is extensive. Highly recommend! Oh, and they do run out of cuts. They’re that good! Prices are somewhat higher but the value is on point! PS-the pics are of before & after of a ribeye my husband grilled. 😍

Google
No joke this is maybe the best sandwich I have ever eaten. Italian Beef. First of all the broth is otherworldly, intensely beefy, unctuous, and rich. I could live off of this and be beyond content. The bread on the sang is sturdy enough to soak up the jus and still hold its structure and not just melt away. The beef is braised just perfectly and the house made giardinera has a really nice sweetness that makes me keep going for more bites to finish this generous portion size. Absolute home run. Can’t recommend this highly enough!

Google
My wife and I love going to “high-end” steak restaurants. We also cook steak at home about twice a week from meat we purchase at the grocer store. Just got a bone-in ribeye from Fat butcher and cooked it at home on the Blackstone. We both agreed it was by far the best steak we have EVER had. Pricing is very reasonable too; you pay a little more (depending on cut), but you get an astronomically better cut of meat you’ll never find at a chain grocer . Can’t recommend enough. New favorite spot to get meat.

Yelp
My family loves the house made beef, pork, and lamb ragu from the case. I have celiac disease and have never had an issue. Which made me wonder about their other yummy options. Tried the smoked turkey lunchmeat and giardinier today and wow! I haven't had the pleasure of sliced to order lunchmeat in years. Making a sandwich at home with paper thin meat and this bright condiment made my day. They are well versed on the ingredients in the products they make in-house, and from their partner producers when it comes to gluten free. Definitely going back.

Yelp
Terrific quality, freshness and service all in one. Would highly recommend. They always have unique cuts of meat you typically can't find elsewhere.

Yelp
Fat Butcher sells meats from pasture-raised cows, lamb, pigs, chicken, and others that are sourced from local farmers in Western Pennsylvania. The business practices whole-animal, nose-to-tail butchery that respects the animals. Even bones and fat are used. My husband and I shopped here one time. On a Saturday afternoon, we drove around the neighborhood for 30 minutes before we found a paid parking spot. Other customers were inside the store, but the employees in the store served us promptly and politely. We saw cuts of beef, pork, lamb, and poultry as well as sandwiches, soups, spices, maple syrup, etcetera. We did not see as many unique meats as larger butcher shops sell. Prices were OK. We bought beef skewers and cooked them at home. We thought that the quality of the meat could have been better, but we liked the juiciness and flavors.

Yelp
Oh. My. God. Ok - I'm writing this review six days after my last one. Why? Because I wanted to give the Fat Butcher and all its staff TEN STARS for being absolutely AWESOME! This week, I decided to "practice" cooking a rack beef short ribs. They had a gorgeous 7 rib rack of ribs, and it had me at hello. (See photos...) ALL of the staff were working hard, breaking down large cuts into their respective parts. Despite being busy, they stopped what they were doing, and asked me politely how they could help (and how did my pork shoulder I got there a couple weeks ago turn out?). The quality of their meats is certainly an inspiration for adventurous amateur home chefs to try new and intricate recipes. This place is more than "just" the meats and more than "just" the people - it's the most amazing butchery I've had the good fortune of shopping in - everything is clean and organized, the cuts are super high quality, and the staff certainly know what they are doing! I will definitely be back for more!!! **If you are curious about this cook, I seasoned it with a Himalayan salt and pepper rub I like for my briskets, and added just a touch of Meat Church. Then, I left it uncovered in the refrigerator at 38F for 15 hours or so. Cooked on a Kamado ceramic grill at 275F until probe tender and internal temp was 205F. One of the tastiest things I've ever made - excited to do this again to make beef short rib / morel agnolotti in the Fall!**

Yelp
IYKYK... otherwise, stay away. This place is already too popular Yeah, yeah, yeah. Amazing meats, amazing sandwiches, amazing people. I get it, and I don't care. The prices are still good and there aren't lines out the door... yet. Please visit your local complete foods instead.

Yelp
Some of the best meat I've ever had. The sandwich was delectable. Will defiantly be back

Yelp
I live like a 5-minute walk from this place and it is heaven sent! Who doesn't want to say they have a local butcher?! Like, that is true local stuff right there. Gotta love that alone. Ambiance is a nice and clean. Small little shop with a window area to sit and eat. Seating for maybe 3-4 people. They have a bunch of random stuff to purchase that is not meat. From salts to cowboy candy! They have all the little things to add to a fun charcuterie board! Service is super friendly and informative! I went in once looking for steak and just had a whole conversation about what I was looking to cook, how I wanted to prepare it. All around super helpful and didn't shame me on not knowing what I wanted! The meat selection is absolutely phenomenal. Like have to ever looked at raw pork and said "DAAAAAMN that pork looks amazing!"? I have, in here. The butcher then told me about what type of pig it came from and the linage of it. It was crazy and fun to learn. They have a small menu of made to order things as well. Do not sleep on those! I had the breakfast sandwich and it was so delicious. The bacon was top tier. The Fresno aioli, bottle it and then pour bottle directly into my mouth. Lol. But seriously, so good. 15/10 I would recommend this place. I also recommend following them on their social media because they are super active on there, posting updates, new items and information for holiday rushes and orders! Extremely helpful to know!

Yelp
Didn't get a chance to try - apparently their kitchen hours are different from their shop hours, information which is not available on their website or anywhere else online.

Yelp
Got the smash burger with everything on it. Best burger I've ever had. No joke, the meat is perfectly seasoned with homemade thick sweet pickles some type of sauce they use I don't know what it's called but so delish! Been craving a burger for awhile & this hit the spot great price too! $11 for a huge burger, can't beat that!

Yelp
More than worthy of your business. I have gotten different items here over the course of their opening and I've never been disappointed. The sausages stand out to me but really it is everything they do. Respect for the animals they sell and it shows. It's not cheap but maybe we don't need to eat as much meat anyway? If you are eating it (and I am) buy from a purveyor you can trust. This place is dope

Yelp
Love this neighborhood butcher for so many reasons- 1. Friendly & knowledgeable staff that are willing to go above and beyond to help you make informed decisions on the best cuts for your culinary needs. 2. The most incredible selection of fresh, local meats and in house made sausages that rotates as new items are able to be sourced. 3. I didn't think I could top their delicious breakfast sandwich, until I tried the pork belly sandwich...and then the smash burger. I'm drooling while writing this just thinking of how good they all were. Do yourself a favor and stop by before 4pm to try one out.

Yelp
Went for the first time Sunday. Purchased filets, chicken breasts and quarters. I don't think we'll ever buy meat from anywhere else! Outstanding products, great service and CLEAN! Go.

Yelp
I am so glad to see a business like this in Pittsburgh. I love that they source their meat from local farms. I typically go right to farmers markets, but it's nice to know I can get local meat from a butcher shop now. We visited for the first time this week- they had a great selection of eggs, cheese, and meats. I also love that they have some hot food as well. We went with the turkey sandwich with braised kale and a breakfast sandwich with bacon. Both were so delicious! We were really impressed. I didn't buy any meat to-go this time, but I will be back soon to do so!

Yelp
You won't be disappointed by stopping in at Fat Butcher! The staff is super knowledgeable about the cuts of meat available daily. They will help you pick what is just right for your needs. The steaks are hand cut to order and not your typical "box" store cuts as they butcher a whole animal and make use of everything that they can. Absolutely love that the product is locally sourced, and they are transparent about the animals behind the products in the case.

Candice S.

Yelp
The ONLY place anyone should purchase meat from in the Pittsburgh area. The cooler section is always stocked with some great dips (smoked onion is my FAV), soups, and the like. The sandwiches are also amazingly good. And the service - so knowledgeable and always friendly. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! The staff here is so nice and they are dog friendly. I come in all the time for their smash double cheese burger which at $11 comes with a tasty potato bun and around 6 oz of beef. I'm not sure what the sauce is exactly but I have dreamt about it!! I always buy a liver snap for $1 for my pup. They also sell Twinbrook chocolate milk for when I'm feeling like a treat. Seriously though, the sandwiches **served from 12-4pm** are just the tip of the iceberg here. The quality of the meat is amazing and I love that they work with local farms. Their fridge displays are chocked full of amazing local brands (they sell De Fer coffee)! These are the types of businesses that Lawrenceville needs more of - those that life up other local brands in the area. Lastly, the shop is always super tidy and smells great.

Yelp
tl;dr: delicious and flavorful breakfast sandwiches found here! ---- I'm always on the hunt for the best breakfast sandwich in town. Heard that the new butcher had sandwiches so I knew I had to try it for myself. We ordered ahead online one morning for pickup after our morning workout. I got the breakfast sandwich and my partner got soup. We almost drove right by it bc it's a small hole in the wall but parking was easy to find nonetheless on the street. Once inside, there was a display of what looked like the freshest meats I have ever seen. Definitely not the place for folks who prefer not to see raw meat and things. The butchering wasn't on view except for some smaller cuts being made up front. I only had to wait a few minutes for my sandwich and soup pick up. The sandwich was delicious! I added Cholula to it for some hot sauce but other than that it was very tasty. The herb aioli they use adds perfect flavor to the sandwich. The soup my partner ordered was also delicious and flavorful! We were both pleasantly surprised to find such delicious meals from a butcher shop. Will definitely be back. There is a window counter for seating but overall vibes are very much takeout. Easy street parking too.

Yelp
The smash burger was incredible! As a side, I bought & thoroughly enjoyed the meaty pasta salad. Check the cooler for different meaty side salads, while waiting for your burger! I am looking to return for the corned beef or pastrami Sammie's! I found the staff friendly & accommodating. The shop is ultra clean! I highly recommend the Fat Butcher!

Harmon R.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches (especially the Pastrami) and equally amazing cuts of meat. Made a lovely dinner with their chuck eye and ranch steaks.

Yelp
I've been to this place last year when they first opened and the meats are amazing! I finally was able to try their sandwiches and they're definitely worth trying. The beef torta is so tender and the meat falls apart. I'd recommend getting this sandwich

Yelp
The cookies alone are wild. Full of complex flavors and the butterscotch is on point. The clarified butter can make any food tasty and full of rich flavor. I tried some pork meatballs made with beets and they were super fresh! I'm so glad we have FB in the neighborhood. They are a really cool group of people bringing quality meats and products to a local market.

Yelp
Nice new butcher shop in Lawrenville. The shop also has cheeses, rubs, sauces and BBQ accouterments. Deli meats and sandwiches are also available. So if you are looking for a good butcher shop, stop by.

Yelp
Best burger ive had in pgh, and that includes the Bruges brisket burger. Cow knee for making broth. Owner took the time to talk me through basting and roasting it before making the broth. Cuts are pricy but less than what i expected for the quality. Burger and sandwiches priced very reasonably.

Yelp
This place was great! Sandwiches were delicious! Staff was very pleasant. Try it! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Classic and genius old school whole animal butcher. Amazing quality. Amazing people. Great sausages, scratch-made stock, lard, tallow, etc. Fabulous sandwiches.

Bryan C.

Yelp
Had the Hot Italian sandwich. It was a bit of a grease bomb, but in the best way possible. If that's your thing (and it's definitely mine) you will not be disappointed. The flavors were rich and complex. I saw another review complaining about the prices, and I can't say I agree. Some things here will be clearly more expensive than a big-name grocery store, but we're talking about local, fresh meats. For the premium, you get a much higher quality and taste. For example, I got a tub of leaf lard, about 16 oz for $4. You'd pay half that for your standard Armour shelf-stable lard, but let's not pretend the two products are even close. Great spot for all sorts of fats, stocks, soups, and we're not even getting into the cuts behind the counter. Highly recommend, great value to quality ratio.

Ryan T.

Yelp
A very nice butcher shop in Lawerenceville. Good news! Meat that you don't have to drive to Giant Eagle or Whole Foods to get! Only problem is that it is really expensive, hence the 3 stars. Is $10/pound for ground beef too high? I think it is. Prices were much more expensive than Whole Foods. If you can afford it, it's good. But $26 a pound for ribeye? Yeesh

Sandy R.

Yelp
Place is easy to get to. Very clean. Needs a little more choices. But what they do have is amazing. All the meat cuts are cut by hand. We had the rib eye, bacon, and sausage. We also got sliced turkey and pastrami. Both were delicious. A little pricey but well worth it!!!
