Inside the World of Shag and Shots in North Myrtle Beach | Eater Carolinas

"This North Myrtle Beach institution was in full swing during the Society of Stranders [SOS] Spring Safari (April 23–May 4), an annual week-long shag dance party that fills Ocean Drive bars; as one of the host bars it stocked the makings for thousands of shooter cocktails. Its jukebox-style façade is an architectural icon; inside neon-lit rooms ramble from a front grill turning out hot dogs and fried bologna sandwiches with speed, to a main room with a dance floor, bandstand, and elevated bar that gives an easy line of sight to the action, plus a back room with more seating and another bar. Walls are covered with memorabilia and commemorative photos of the DJs Hall of Fame, making the low‑ceilinged spaces a meandering shrine to the golden era of shag. The Carolina Shag—the “swing dance of the South” that originated in North Myrtle Beach in the 1960s—still centers here, with hundreds of mostly-retiree dancers mixing, mingling, and twirling to classic beach‑music hits while a live band jams. Shooter culture dominates SOS gatherings: the venue sold hoards of multi-ingredient shots, and the bartender Derek Goodwin knows 160 recipes, from Alabama Slammer to Sex with an Alligator; to prepare mega orders he lined up mini plastic cups on cafeteria trays, free-counted ingredients in a cocktail tin, and then served batches at a time. Historian David Wondrich notes that shooters first appeared in the 1970s when bartenders combined liquors with sweet syrups and cordials and sold them under cheeky names; as Goodwin explains, “The dancers can have a drink, something quick that is sweet and lower alcohol than a traditional cocktail, and keep on dancing.” Groups ordered Kamikazes, Raspberry Lemon Drops, Redheaded Sluts, Liquid Marijuana, and plenty of Paydays. “My favorite shooter is a Payday,” said Amy Bolen of Madison, North Carolina. She added, “It tastes just like a Payday candy bar. I had it for the first time right here at [this bar] eight years ago, and it’s been my favorite ever since.” Bolen also said, “It’s just a great group of people here. Everyone knows how to have fun. And we love to have shooters every now and then. Yeah, love it.” The Payday recipe provided: 2 ounces Frangelico, 2 ounces butterscotch schnapps; add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake until chilled, strain into cups with a salted rim and serve immediately. Makes 4 shooters." - Stephanie Burt

The most unique restaurant experience we had while on Spring Break!! Free lessons on Wednesdays.

Visiting Fat Harold’s is like entering into a movie about the early 1960s (am thinking of the movie classic “Shag” made in Myrtle Beach). Good old music (not too loud) and plenty of old regulars showing you how to do the famous dance that was born here. Check it out.

Google
This place is all about the celebration of the Carolina Shag dance. I refer to it as the Mother Church or Mecca of the Carolina Shag, the dance floors are wonderful. There are two, the front and the back, each one has its own DJ at events such as the SOS Spring, Fall, and Mid-Winter gatherings. There are lessons here on the weeknights, so you can learn to dance while you're on vacation! Fun, friendly and welcoming! Just the way we like it!

Google
This place is the best. My father in law has been coming here since I was born. He passed last year so we celebrated his famous spot in his memorial. The staff was spool nice.

Came for the Shag dancing💚 People are fun & warm. I am a terrible shagger but this place makes me want to get better, or die trying. Place is a whole vibe. I left my very special Irish wool sweater there by accident, it was waiting for me in the morning. Thanks again for that to the kind staff 🙏 This video must be from my 2nd visit 12/29/23.

Google
Cross between a dive bar and a dance club. I love Fat Harolds. When we are in town, we love to go watch the regulars shag (type of dance). Parking is minimal, so we always Uber. Decent bar food. Very nice staff.

Yelp
True Score: 3.5 Stars Old School - Love the grill side If you really want to experience North Myrtle Beach and Ocean Drive, you have to go to Fat Harold's. Decorated with many relics and photos of the area and the history of the "shag" (beach music dancing), this club is large, best DJ in the area for beach music and even if you don't dance, you can spend couple of hours just watching the experts. Now, just have to comment that FH's has a grill side outside the bar area. It's like a different business. The grill was run by an older lady. She definitely was a veteran of this place. They are slinging some good grub off that grill. Don't muss out on the fried bologna sandwich. Delicious Don't miss Fat Harolds if you're in the area. A lot of history. Thanks

Yelp
I walked in and waited about 5mins by the bar. The lady never even addressed me. I ended up leaving and going else where. There were only 3 other people inside so wasn't busy at all.

Rodney B.

Yelp
An institution in OD. for over 50 yrars. Grab your best girl and your Weejuns and come shag the night away.

Yelp
My 'rents (now mid-70's) have been doing the Carolina Shag for near 30 years. While I had experienced places like Fat Harold's with them, my husband and teen son had not (though have heard about it for years). Finally had the chance to take my hubs and kid to see my father dance (mom passed a couple years ago). Not sure what they were expecting, but they were pretty shocked at the abundant crowd and great energy Fat Harold's puts out! If you're the jealous type, either leave it at the door or don't come. You and/or your date are likely to be asked to dance. Not because you're oh so sexy, but because . . . WHY NOT? If you're between 25 and 110 years old, go in with a smile and fun attitude, you'll enjoy yourself here! At the front of FH's is a diner-type place with 4 or 5 booths where you can get a pretty good burger, fries, coke, and look around at all the near-museum history pieces. Follow that up by going into the next area and ordering an adult beverage or two. Have a seat (you might have to wait a few min and be speedy, but you'll get one) and just watch. Seeing all these folks 50+ having a good time and smiling is just good for the soul. Strike up a conversation with the person next to you. "How long you been shaggin'? Where did you learn?" It sounds silly to you, but you're likely to get an earful and be asked if you'd like to learn. (Your answer should be "SURE!") But if not, go on into the back room where the dance floor and bar are less crowded, and the dancers are less experienced. Repeat steps for prior room. You'll leave North Myrtle Beach being able to do "basic" and able tell all your friends back home "I learned how to shag!" (at least vertically).

Michelle S.

Yelp
Love, Love, Love Fat Harold's!! Lots of dance lessons are offered if you don't know how to dance. The DJs are great, and the music is not too loud. Some places have music so loud it forces us to wear earplugs to protect our hearing. Not Fat Harold's! They do it right! The energy in the place is great. It is by far our favorite place to meet friends and dance!

Matthew D.

Yelp
The staff and even some of the regulars are very very rude. If you're under the age of 30 you're not welcome here. My friends and I (all 25-27) were asked repeatedly for our IDs. One of the regulars kept hounding us and told us that we can't be here bc it's 21+ and a staff member came over and asked who let us in bc it's 21+. Very unnecessary and unwelcoming.

Yelp
Ocean Drive is the Beach Music Capital of the World and Fat Harold's is the epicenter of Beach Music in OD. This place is an institution. To experience real Carolina Shag dancing, come to Fat Harolds. There is plenty of room with Two dance floors. The crowd here is older, say 50's and up. Much of the crowd appears to be local but everyone is very friendly. You feel like you're at a party rather than a dance club. I guess it's the fraternity of shaggers. Many of the shaggers are excellent dancers yet there are enough "basic" shaggers that you won't feel intimidated if you are not at competition level. Fat Harold's offers free beginners lessons on Tuesdays to encourage everyone to lean the Carolina Shag. Harold's is a little divey, but it IS the beach and you are doing a dance that was originally done on sand or sawdust so actually, this is a step up. They serve food but I do not recommend coming here for the food. If you grew up in the Carolina's you get it. If you're from somewhere else and want to experience real traditional Carolina beach nightlife, this is it.

Yelp
This place was so crowded during the winter session of S. O. S. I couldn't tell much about it. There seemed to be two bars, two dance floors and lots of shag music playing. Perhaps there's food available but really couldn't tell. This is a mecca for hardcore Shaggers.
google avatar

Yelp
went for free beginner's shag lessons. had a real fun time.

Yelp
Fat Harold's was a ball, if you don't shag that's ok Dance the night away Lots of fun to watch those who do shag

Yelp
Came down to this dance club watch some friends take line dance lessons. This is a well known locals hangout for shagging and other dance forms. Since Myrtle Beach area is apparently the Mecca of shag dancing, this is the place to be to watch the competitions. They also offer free lessons in the different styles of dance which looks like alot of fun. There are two dance floor areas with table and bar rail seating along the entire length on one side for spectators. The place is old and has the feel of a honky tonk. Lots of old pictures on the walls of , I guess, of past dance champions. My cons for the club is the food and bar. It looks like it was shoved in the lobby of main entrance as an afterthought. The drinks were ok but the food was pretty bad. Obviously frozen hamburger patties, very greasy, to match the fries. So I suggest a nice dinner someplace else, then come here to have fun watching or participating in the dancing. That's what we are going to do next. Three stars for the dance club alone!

Yelp
A real local hang out, where everyone knows your name. Very fun and friendly staff, and one of the BEST places to go if you want to learn, or watch Shag Dancing! If you've yet to check out Fat Harolds Beach Club, you really should do it next time you're in the area. It's a one of a kind gem!
google avatar

Marian H.

Yelp
Just went for a drink before going to dinner. My sister had never been there and I wanted her to see it. It was a night that was especially for locals so pretty crowded. But the locals were friendly
google avatar

Vickie B.

Yelp
This place is so fun!! Great food, friendly staff, fun DJ's playing the best Beach music in North Myrtle. Easy to get to on Main Street in the OD section. Mature crowds, that love to have fun & dance. Bring your friends... they will love it!
google avatar

Stacy W.

Yelp
My friend and I are 31. Completely sober, we tried to dance. We got kicked out for absolutely no reason. Do not go to this place if you're less than 100 years old. Ridiculous.
google avatar

Christa L.

Yelp
I think we were the youngest people in here and we are 43ish. Couldn't pass them up because I loved the name. Dancing lessons tonight
google avatar

Darlene B.

Yelp
Love the music, crowd, and people. This older crowd Always has fun. Drinks are not expensive. Good parking. Just a little drive back to Myrtle
google avatar

JP W.

Yelp
If you love Shag, you'll love the Fat Mans' House, Far Harold's. Dance till you feet hurt, laugh till your face hurts! Good friends, good music, good times. Try the margarita - back room bar! The bartender in the back is KNOWN for good ones! Have fun, y'all!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. It honestly looks like a crap hole dive that should be avoided. And it is a crap hole dive. However, the drinks are priced right, the beer is cold. When they have live entertainment it is usually excellent. Here is what earned it a 4 star over a 3. The food. I stopped in just for a few beers and the guys next to me ordered some food. I expected to see some microwave reheated junk come out. Instead they have plates with mountains of clearly fresh made food. I got a Reuben. Was excellent. Came back the next day and got a half pound of fried shrimp to eat with some beer. Amazing! The pile was so big I was worried they gave me and charged me for a pound. They didn't. From the outside it looks like a place to be either avoided or that is a run down crap joint. Inside isn't much better. But all that is what makes it even better. Seriously, stop in for a bite to eat and some beer. You will be surprised.

Yelp
What does one say about "Fat Harold's BeachClub"....well, the words awesome, fun and shagtastic come to mind. A friend and I recently visited Myrtle Beach and were determined to get the "beach music" experience. We were directed to Fat Harold's, which is located in North Myrtle Beach (roughly a $30 cab from central Myrtle Beach). Fat Harold's boasted several large dance floors, a great DJ spinning '60s beach music classics and people of all ages SHAG DANCING. I of course could only think of the hit movie, SHAG, and wondered when "Pudge" would appear with Chip for the big Shag off. You do not need to be stuck in the 60s or 60 years old to love this place. Its feel-good fun and the enthusiasm for the music and dance style is totally infectious. Didn't try the food; but the drinks were pretty standard cost/menu-wise. A tip from me to you? Don't leave without a "I got shagged at Fat Harold's" t-shirt. It is currently the anchor of my wardrobe. I think Pudge would be proud.

Trace H.

Yelp
While I wish they had more food options and they were out of most shirt sizes, I still loved the atmosphere and ambiance. I went just to watch shag dancing, and the OD Shag Club did not disappoint! It was a really fun night!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Great dancing, friendly people. This seems to be the place where good dancers come. Excellent dance floor, David the DJ plays great music and was really friendly. Live bands on weekends. Drinks are cheap, free parking, and no cover. Shag dancing lessons on Mondays and Tuesdays.
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
Was not open for lunch on Tuesday, but we shall return for the shagging in the Shaguar. ...(6 hrs later)...my kind of place inside, dimly lit and big dance floor. Turns out Tuesday nights are special, free shag lessons from 7-9 pm. First a little shag history lesson, then onto learning the steps. I've been shaggin' ever since. If you want to be as cool as me you gotta be able to shag!
google avatar

Mitch S.

Yelp
Do not take children here. Sign on the outside, no weapons inside, pretty much says all that is needed to be said.. can't review it...walked in, then out...quickly.i am sure it is a fine divey establishment. Can't rate on food..but can rate on physical review. Though lots of parking....
google avatar

Lana F.

Yelp
This was one of the highlights of our trip to North Myrtle Beach. If you are into beach music and doing the Carolina Shag then you cant pass this one by. A bit more for an older crowd of that decade rather than a younger group venue. Plenty of dance floor and friendly folks, who could as for more? If glitter and flashy lights are your thing then this is not the place but if you wanna a good time shah or swing dancing then this is your spot!
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
I would love to be able to get my hands on your T Shirt "I got shagged at Fat Harold's". I am from Australia and unfortunately am not well enough to fly over there, but Shagged does have a totally different meaning over here than there. Would love to be able to wear this to a Heart Support Group Meeting or down the mall. If there is any way I could possibly get one, I would be eternally grateful. Christine Arnott christinearnott20@gmail.com
google avatar

Annelise R.

Yelp
The DJ was a jerk when I asked him if I could make a request he said I don't know you and refused to listen to me. This was after I spent $100 on the drinks. Will never come back here.
google avatar

Monica W.

Yelp
After a horrible experience at OP Pavilion we ended up here; thank goodness! Highly recommend for a great drink with stellar service.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
If you Shag dance and have a pulse, you know that the "heartbeat" originates in North Myrtle Beach, SC ... and specifically at the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Drive. Fat Harold's is one of the "Home Clubs" to the Shag, and indeed, is often thought to be "THE Home Club". Folks over at OD's or the Pavilion might disagree ... but you haven't shagged at NMB unless you've made a pilgrimage to Fat Harold's. It has multiple bars and dance floors ... on the smallish size and often crowded ... but that's just the way Shaggers like it! Meet new friends and dance with them! Try to be in town during an SOS Migration! Fun, fun, fun!
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, cheap drinks, cold beer. Food is just so so. It's typical bar food. On Tuesday nights they teach you how to dance the shag for free from 7-9pm. It's fun to learn. This place is like a typical dive. Don't let the outdated decor fool you. It's a great place
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
We vacation in MB every year and one night a group of us decided to hit the streets. We wondered into Harold's and were surprised that everyone in the place was 65+. We were in our 20's but we stuck around to watch the Shag dancing. I am so glad we did because we had so much fun. We had people left and right teaching us to Shag and we danced the night away. The crowd at Harold's knows how to have fun. Don't let their age deceive you, give it a shot you will treasure the memories and make new friends.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
Not for the young of heart. Smelled like old balls and GOODWILL. Although, the DJ did try to cater to the younger crowd. That was appreciated. However, the old ball smell was still there, despite our complaints. They are good at what they do.

L M.

Yelp
Okay - it's probably for the 'older' generation but if you let go of any expectations that this is going to be like a movie, you will have a ball! They have Shag lessons every Monday night and everyone is welcome (with or without partner) ... it was a lot of fun ... everyone was happy and smiling and having a blast! Isn't that what vacations are supposed to be about? I'll bring my son next time ... loads of fun and really brings one back to the vintage beach experience. Loved it!
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
As far as food goes. Its 2 stars at best. Although the burger was decent, its nothing special. Its a bar, with some bar style food thats it.
google avatar

Candi G.

Yelp
The kind of place that feels like you're at home but on the beach. Pool tables, darts, reasonably priced food and drinks right on the beach. If I was local I would likely visit frequently.

Pamela W.

Yelp
Dropped in after the Beach Music Festival for a quick bite to eat. The health department needs to check this place out. They sell food because they have to and not for any other reason. Food was nasty and after sitting there and watching how my food was handled and the filth of this grill I will never be back. I want to learn to shag but it will not be here.
google avatar

Barbara Y.

Yelp
Good burgers and friendly folks. A place with a lot of history and atmosphere. Happened to be be here on a shag contest nite, so we ate at the bar.

Tyler C.

Yelp
4 stars for being an interesting place that's like a museum for "shag" dancing, a Carolina-born tradition, with cheap drinks and friendly service. Quirky design on the inside & out. Lot of stuff to look at for sure. Definitely an older crowd who were all slick dancers. Local patrons were so kind & excitedly gave us demonstrations & history of the dance. Been to a lot of establishments in my time, but never one like this.

Taylor R.

Yelp
Went on a Tuesday night and had the best night ever! So much fun to learn the shag and the locals are so friendly and willing to help! We're going back tonight! Love this place!!

John S.

Yelp
I have been going to Fat Haorlds for years. Today my wife and I went in to order food to go. The cook was so rude we almost got into a fight. He actually came out from behind the counter to challenge me. I'm 67 years old. and didn't drive 8 hrs. to have a short order cook get in my face. I will never go to Fat Harold's again.
