Fat Mao Noodles - Review - Chinatown - Vancouver - The Infatuation

"Fat Mao, Cantonese for “prosperous cat,” deals in the everyday prosperity of rich broth and chewy noodles, the kind of comfort that chefs and restaurant folk seek out on their days off. This tiny Chinatown noodle shop has long been an insider favourite, known for Thai-style soups like the khao soi, which is deeply spiced and rich without becoming heavy, more warming than spicy-hot. The lighter, smaller Thai rice soup is perfect after a day of running around the city, with a nourishing pork broth, soft rice and a finish of greens and herbs that tastes almost medicinal. You should also order a side of griddled roti, which perfectly complements the meal with its golden, slightly crisp edges and a side of rich curry for dipping. Grab a window seat if you can, where the view is all movement: elders wheeling trolleys piled with groceries, shopkeepers hosing down the sidewalk, and cardboard boxes passed from delivery van to vendors." - Michelle Sproule

Celebrating 10 years of deliciousness! From the team behind Maenam in Kits, Chef Angus An brings us a more casual, street-level take on Thai cuisine and it’s a flavour adventure every time. This was my third visit since they opened, and the menu keeps evolving! Every dish bursts with bold flavours, leaning on the spicy side, thankfully the Thai iced tea is there to cool things down. • Tom Yum Goong - cloudy hot and sour prawn soup with mushrooms, galangal, lemongrass and evaporated milk • Hot and Sour Pork Noodles - hot and sour pork soup with BBQ pork, ground pork, and Vietnamese ham, Asian celery, peanuts, and crispy shallots • Thai Iced Tea - palm sugar, evaporated milk

Tried the Tom Yum Goong noodle and the special Pork Hot Pot noodle and they are both perfect! The broth is rich and flavourful with an interesting blend of veggies & spices. These two options both have an excellent balance of savoury, sour and herbal taste.

I've been wanting to try this place for quite some time now. Am I ever glad I did. From the moment we walked in, the servers were extremely friendly and helpful to recommend beat sellers. Being a noodle shop, you don't get the smell of soup and noodles on your clothes, which is a good thing. We ordered the recommended curry chicken with Shanghai wide noodles and the boat noodle with vermicelli. If you like noodles a bit chewy, I'd recommend the Shanghai noodles. The chicken was cooked very nicely. Fall off the bone. The curry was rich and flavorful. I just wished they had given a little bit more broth. The boat noodle had beef shin, meat balls , and liquid pork blood mixed into the soup. It was very tasty, but a tad on the salty side. All in all, excellent with extremely good service.

Everything was a 10/10! As someone who lived in Thailand, the boat noodles wasn’t 100% authentic but its the only one in Vancouver (as far as i know) and its also fusion with Shanghainese cuisine so it was still amazing! the meat was super tender. it literally melts in your mouth 😭🩷 I never take soup leftovers like that esp with just the broth but it was so good im going to boil noodles at home and eat with it after! Our server was amazing as well! Food came out fast love the interior 💌

What a fantastic lunch at Fat Mao Noodles in Chinatown today! The place was absolutely bustling, but it was so worth the wait. It was my first time trying it out, though my husband had been raving about it, declaring it the "best soup noodles ever!" (I, of course, had to tease him about who he went with if it was my first time! ) Stepping through the narrow door, the restaurant might be small, but it immediately felt like being welcomed into a friend's home. We kicked things off with their delicious roti and curry--definitely a must-share starter. Then, we dove into the main event: the most incredible, fall-off-the-bone Braised Duck Noodles (duck leg in aromatic soy broth) and a rich, Spicy Boat Noodle soup (rich beef & pork broth with sliced shin & meatballs). A huge bonus? You can customize your noodle type! For my dish, I changed the noodles from Shanghai wide noodles to glass vermicelli noodles for my dietary needs. Every dish was simply so good, especially the soup broth, which was incredibly rich and flavourful. The staff were really nice, checking in on us after our food arrived to make sure everything was perfect. We'll definitely be back for more.

Fat Mao in Vancouver is a fantastic spot for comforting, flavor-packed Southeast Asian noodles. The highlight is absolutely the spicy boat noodles — rich, aromatic broth with just the right kick and unbelievably tender cuts of meat. Portions are satisfying, service is quick, and the whole place has a cozy, casual vibe. A must-visit if you love bold noodle dishes.
