Best Dishes Eater NY Editors Ate This Week: January 21 | Eater NY

"Newly opened and appealing to fans of the Montclair outpost, this polished bistro—run by longtime Daniel Boulud veterans Dominique Paulin and Chef Olivier Muller—offers a nice skyline view and reasonably sized portions. Memorable dishes include chickpea panisse ($14), octopus and lentils ($23), and coq au vin ($32), but the scene-stealer is a basket of madeleines ($12), still warm and fresh out of the oven with a dusting of powdered sugar. — Melissa McCart, lead editor, Northeast" - Eater Staff

NYC New Restaurant Openings: August 2024 | Eater NY

"A second Faubourg near the Weehawken waterfront mirroring the ambitious Montclair original, offering multiple experiences in one space — a bar menu, a plant-based menu, and an omnivore à la carte menu — with an emphasis on seasonality and classical French technique." - Eater Staff

Weehawken Adds a Fancy Brasserie With Skyline Views From Daniel Boulud Alums | Eater NY

"I learn the Weehawken outpost will occupy 5,000 square feet on the ground floor of River House 11 at 1100 Avenue at Port Imperial, near Ferry Way, a block from the ferry, and will offer partial views of the Manhattan skyline. The space will have an open kitchen, a 16-seat bar, an 84-seat dining room, a speakeasy lounge similar to the original, and 60-seat outdoor dining; Cycle Projects — the architect behind the swanky Montclair location — is designing the new spot. Olivier Muller and Dominique Paulin, both 20-year Daniel Boulud alums, are behind the brasserie, and Muller says, “People often think of French restaurants as French onion soup and steak frites. But we’ll have a lot of vegetables. We’ll follow the market. And have a range of offerings, from oysters, to vegan items — and we’re happy to accommodate dietary restrictions.”" - Melissa McCart

A disappointing experience. We went on a Wednesday evening and sat outside. The service felt stiff and rushed. We started with the avocado and beet salad, which looked nice but lacked freshness and flavor: something that unfortunately became a theme for the evening. For the main course, we ordered the beef bourguignon and the fish with ratatouille. The beef tasted slightly stale, and both dishes lacked flavor. While the presentation of the food was appealing, the taste fell far short of expectations. What made the experience even worse was the constant swarm of fruit flies and mosquitoes over our food. Between regretting our meal choices and repeatedly shooing away bugs, we just wanted to leave. When we mentioned this to our server, the response was a shrug and “it’s because of the plants.” While I understand that outdoor dining has its challenges, a restaurant at this level should make some effort, such as table fans or outdoor bug deterrents to ensure a comfortable dining experience. For a place that charges fine dining prices, the food, service, and overall experience fell well below standard. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this restaurant.

We had dinner at their restaurant on Wednesday night, and as a restaurant with a high price, we were not treated as we should be! We ordered a scallop, and there was a bone in it, which almost broke my teeth! We asked the manager, and he explained to us that it was shells, not bones! His attitude was not very friendly. He explained that it was natural for scallops to have shells, but whether it was bones or shells, as a high-cost restaurant, shouldn’t the food be cleaned before serving to the guests? And at the end, when we paid, we were automatically charged a tip, which I can understand, but no matter before or after the payment, we were not told!

2nd time here… We love everything the first time we came, so we decided to bring our friends in, turns out to be a huge disappointment. Food tastes … just bland, nothing close to the first time we were here. The fries look floppy, looks like leftover from noon. I had high hopes for the beef duo, but it just tasted significantly worse than the first time, seems like they forgot about the sauce, it lacks flavor. Idk, attaching two pictures of the same dish from the two times we were here. Well, later when we looked inside the kitchen, we found out that the chef we saw here the first time, wasn’t here — I guess that explains everything, when we asked one of the waiter how many chefs they have, he simply answered he didn’t know.. ok.. I seem to understand now why some chefs on the shows are particularly picky about things — because you can obviously tell the difference lol. My highest respect goes to the chef here. And my sincere advice is to better train your team, so that you can deliver food consistently up to your standard, even if you are absent. It’s a Friday night, everyone is going to expect a higher standard. If you value dining atmosphere and din’t care about the food, then this place is a good choice, it’s at a nice, chilled location near river. Sadly for us, we let our friends down miserably for bring them here this time.. Not to mention, the table behind us seemed to have 80% of the plates unfinished 👀, pretty sad customers I would say. If you want to succeed in this business you’ll have to do better and make some changes, good luck.

Having spent 10 years dining in Manhattan and 5 years in New Jersey, I truly appreciate the city-like dining experience Faubourg offers—but in a much more peaceful and relaxed setting. It perfectly blends that urban vibe with a calm, neighborhood-friendly atmosphere. I’m thrilled to have Faubourg as the closest restaurant to my apartment—it’s a fantastic addition to the community! The food is simply outstanding, easily ranking among my best dining experiences. Highly recommend this gem for anyone looking for great food, excellent service, and a welcoming ambiance!

Google
We count ourselves lucky to have dined at Faubourg's Montclair a number of times. The Weehawken edition brings all we enjoy about this concept: attentive and welcoming staff, beautiful surroundings, deliciously prepared food, a great wine and cocktails list, and an experience that feels curated, a casually elegant vibe. During warm weather Faubourg offers an outdoor seating area too. Our reservation on Resy was honored promptly and we were greeted by name (love that!). Plan to arrive early parking is in short supply on streets and the garage is a few blocks stroll.

This was a nice spot for dinner. The steak frite were good, but definitely better out there (ie loulou in the city). I would go back, but probably for happy hour not a full on dinner

Google
I found out about Faubourg during Hudson Restaurant Week and a friend had been to the Montclair location and said it was good. So a couple of girlfriends and I went. It was a Saturday night and the restaurant was packed. It was beautiful inside and had great mood lighting, just right. There is a beautiful bar and dining room. We all started with a cocktail. I ordered the tarte flambee and beef bourguignon. We also ordered the chickpea panisse which was visually gorgeous! I loved this starter. And the beef bourguignon was like butter so rich and yummy. I wanted a bucket of this! 😆 We accidentally ordered a very expensive bottle of wine, we could have asked them for something cheaper but we went for it and it did not disappoint. Then we got a dessert wine which was divine. I can't wait to go back to Faubourg. A friend went during the week and sat at the bar and said it was very quiet but that the food was great.

Google
Faubourg has become one of my favorite restaurants in NJ. The food and cocktails are excellent. The service is very good. My husband and I have eaten here 4 times and every dish we have tried has been good or excellent.

Yelp
This was my second time at Faubourg Weehawken. The first time was for a private party in a separate room and that was a great experience. This time I was out to dinner with friends and initially the service was lax. We waited a solid twenty minutes after being sat for someone to take our drink order. However, I flagged someone down to ask about our server and after that the service picked up. The food was excellent. Three in my party had the branzino and I had the sole and we were all happy. The appetizers were also a hit. The heirloom tomato salad was excellent as was the duck prosciutto. The server recommended an excellent red wine for the table too. And btw the drinks were pretty good too, with a nice happy hour. Overall an enjoyable experience despite the early misstep. They recovered nicely.

Yelp
Always a fan in Montclair, stop by with a business associate for happy hours. We sit in the bar order 5 appetizers, steak fries for $65 with 4 cocktails. However, the service was extremely slow because there is only one bartender with eight different customers at the bar. However, the restaurant was empty with full of waiters and the other side of the dining hall standing around. The food and drinks are fine but not impressive. I spend close to $200.00 with zero service. Put $20.00 for tip to express our feelings

Yelp
When my friend gave me a few options for a catch-up brunch, I immediately asserted that we should go to Faubourg. It had been a few months since my stellar dinner experience there, and I was eager to revisit the place, especially for different type of meal. There were several 2- or 3-hour parking spots around, making it a convenient locale. Like last time, the service was very friendly, and the food was great! We both decided to go with the prix-fixe menu, which was an excellent deal, as it included 2 courses and our choice of a juice, Bloody Mary, Elderflower Mimosa, or Lychee Mimosa, all for $39. Neither of us were in the drinking mood, however. I asked if I could substitute coffee for the cocktail, but was told that was unfortunately not an option. Instead, I just got a seltzer and ordered a coffee on the side. The brew was robust and tasty, and the staff was really generous in offering refills. For my first course, I went with the mixed fruit bowl, which included some berries, cantaloupe, pineapple, and more. The fruit was fresh, and the portion size was perfect! I opted for the Salmon & Parsnips as my main dish, because I knew the restaurant was super skilled with their seafood dishes. The salmon was cooked to perfection and was served over shaved brussels sprouts, cippolini onions, and a parsnip puree. It was also accompanied by some sliced figs. These accoutrements, which were all favorite foods of mine, added a variety of textures and flavors to the dish and all were well-executed. Lastly, we decided to share the Apple Tart as a dessert add-on. For some reason, I pictured the treat to be more like a little pie or crumble, but it was very much the embodiment of the word "tart". There was a thin, golden brown puff pastry that was topped with caramelized sliced apples and a scopp of vanilla ice cream. It was sweet enough on its own, so we were glad that we had wisely asked for the additional caramel sauce on the side. The dessert was great, but I probably would not order it again, as I am not the biggest fan of puffed pastries. Once again, I had the pleasure of dining at Faubourg, one of my most appreciated recent additions to the area!

Yelp
I have been wanting to go to their Montclair location since a long time and so glad they opened one in Weehawken! I was super excited to see their dedicated vegan menu and the variety of options they provided. We went to a friend's farewell party and we all had a blast! The cocktails are great here - we tried many of them. I loved mushroom tarts flambee and the server suggested me to order gnocchi and squash which as well I loved it. The service was great and the ambiance is trendy. I would return here to try their brunch menu once.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try the Montclair location for awhile so came here for brunch on a Saturday morning. Beautiful interior but the food was just ok. My friend and I opted for the brunch pre-fixe which gives you an option for an app and a main entree as well as a beverage. We opted for the beet & mint tzatziki as well as the duck and fig terrine. Beet and mint tzatziki was nice and refreshing but wasn't a fan of the duck and fig terrine. For our entrees we split the croque monsieur and the crab Benedict. Croque monsieur was good but extremely heavy - could only really eat a couple of bites because of how heavy it was. Crab Benedict was ok. Also ordered a lychee mimosa and elderflower mimosa - both were good.

Yelp
My husband and I had brunch here the week that it opened and were impressed with the food, ambiance, and service. The interior is posh and modern with a beautiful bar area. Our waitress was so friendly and the pacing of the meal was perfect. We started with the red berry parfait, brunch basket (the pain au chocolat was definitely the favorite) and shrimp cocktail. For my main I tried the mushroom omelette, which was packed with mushrooms and cheese! Hoping to try the dinner menu next time we are in town!

Yelp
We had a lovely dinner at this new Weehawken location. Food and drinks were excellent. The grilled octopus was so tender and delicious! I loved the beet salad and the sole fish was cooked to perfection. I will say this location has a different vibe than the Montclair location, both are great and definitely have top notch service.

Yelp
I have been wanting to go to the Montclair location since forever!! When I got to know they have opened another location to weehawkan, for sure I wasn't making any more excuses! Ordered way too much so please refer to the photos, can't write the entire menu here ;) The ambience was very elegant, the servers were polite and the food was as good as I was expecting. The octopus was really the clear winner with fig tart right next in line! The fish was super soft and it was a great evening spent with friends! Want to try the brunch menu now ;)

Yelp
Came back to also try their brunch and can also confirm it is equally good. Service was great during brunch as well which was much appreciated. The food is what keeps us coming back though. For brunch we went with the 2 course prix fixe. The main course was a crab benedict and it was delicious with great flavors. The prix fixe also came with a mimosa which was a nice little addition. Vibes were in line with our last visit - cute place and designed well. Benefit of brunch time is that you get to enjoy some natural light as well. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Decided to give this place a try during Hudson restaurant week. Made reservations ahead of time but got there 30 mins early and was seated immediately (Tuesday 5:30) Decided on the tarte (I was expecting a tart type of dish but it was almost like a flatbread but super thin) flavors were great together. Main I got the beef bourguignon and I loved it! Polenta was the best I've ever had. The beef was melt in your mouth good. They allowed us to sub the Brussels with the broccolini - and that was cooked perfect. The only negative I had was with the dessert I picked which was the opera cake - it came with coffee ice cream which I loved but the cake was ok. The restaurant had dimmed lighting and very comfy and classy seating areas. I was with another friend and they have two seater booths which I thought were super cute.

Yelp
Great place! So glad we have something even more wonderful to fill the void left by Porter! I've only been here twice, so there's not a ton of info to go on. But the food was all so delicious! The way they've renovated the place is absolutely spectacular! The style is trendy and cosy without being tacky. The service here is great! Everyone always seems to be in a very good mood. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Back at my favorite spot again. This time I visited for brunch! Exceptional food and service as usual. Definitely check out the prix fixe menu. You get a choice of elderflower or lychee mimosa, Bloody Mary, or juice. It also comes with a 2 course option. We all had the soup of the day, which was a mushroom cream soup. The egg white frittata and salmon were excellent. We ended our meal with a cappuccino and cranberry cheesecake. Simply the best!

Yelp
I miss the restaurant that used to be in this space. I'm glad Faubourg opened here. I had been to the Montclair location once. - They use Resy. - They are toddler friendly and we like the corner booth. We are more happy hour people and have never gone at a later time. The music is loud, so you don't have to worry about volume. - Their prices are reasonable and there are many options. Everything we've gotten is well executed. - Love the basket of mini madeleine dessert. - It is a darker, crammier interior, I miss the old interior but I get it. - Service is polished with no pretention.

Yelp
As good as we expected - we are huge fans of the Montclair location. Decor is on point along with the service. Food is consistently great. Look forward to visiting this location again.

Yelp
Very yummy French spot which will undoubtedly become a hotspot in the area. The reaction of my own party and tables around me was a lot of oohs and aahs as we peeked at the delicious dishes coming out. It's one of those places where you probably can't go wrong with whatever you order. They also have a vegan menu on request!

Yelp
It's rare that I find a restaurant with great food, excellent service and noteworthy ambience. Faubourg is 5 stars all around! Faubourg replaced Porters in this spot, a hard seat to fill, but they did it and better! The ambience is unpretentious, relaxed, yet sophisticated and sleek. It's the place you want to be for celebrations and romantic dates or Fridays after work to welcome in the weekend. It's the place I booked to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Service was excellent - water was replenished every time our bottle had a quarter remaining. Our plates and utensils were switched out after every course. The manager came over at least 3 times to check on us in addition to our waiter. There were 3 hostesses at the reception desk and many bus boys. The staff to customer ratio is high. The food was amazing! Every dish was tasty. Our table was served with a bottle of still water and a bottle of sparking water. We love sparkling water and every time our bottle was 3/4 done, someone came and replaced it with another! We started with Tarte flambee - absolutely delicious and the gourgeres, which were so good that we ordered a second plate. I ordered the ORECCHIETTE & LAMB RAGOUT, which was cooked perfectly al dente, with a flavorful and delicious sauce. The ragout was tender and packed full of flavor. The Beef Duo was also a huge hit. It's served with a bavette steak and oxtail. We also ordered the 32 oz dry aged rib eye steak (shared between 2 people) - I didn't try this but heard it was very good. Other dishes we ordered were the sirloin steak and coq au vin. The chicken in the coq au vin was fall off the bone tender. I didn't try the desserts but we ordered the apple tart and the choux - both good. Faubourg is pricey (we spent $100/pp) but it's a treat.

Yelp
Amazing food in a super convenient location--just down the block for me. The food is consistently good, and the service is always lovely. Definitely worth checking out! For the full experience, be sure to visit their Montclair, NJ location too.

Yelp
back for seconds. The menu is limited and has an acquired taste. I do think they may have to add more common food and they can add a twist. The area they are in is not a high falutin one. Like the previous establishment that failed. Having said that the place is pretty and if you are looking for a different experience, fine. The service is good. But not many options on a limited menu. On occassion i guess a place to go. However regulars and everyday traffic not so much. I wish them luck and hope they can make some additions to menu and wine list.

Yelp
I had been hearing about this place coming to Weehawken from Montclair for months. We had been to another restaurant that was there before and did not have a good experience, so it took me a long time to convince my husband to go. I absolutely loved it! Everything was on point. Restaurant is designed beautifully . They have 2 bar areas and dining seats as well. We started at the bar and had drinks. I forgot the bartenders name, but he was friendly and courteous and was knowledgeable about the menu. We each had a drink which we enjoyed and made our way to our dinner seats. You can also eat at the bar. We sat at a roomy seat in the corner. I chose a cold crab salad and my husband had the lentil octopus. I loved the salad, but both dishes were exquisite. My husband had an oxtail meat dish that he was not crazy for, but was good & I had the lemon sole which was delectable. We also had the brussel sprouts and mashed potato sides. Both delicious. For dessert I opted for pistachio ice cream. Everything was so good, I wanted to pick up the plate and lick it. The waitress was sweet and very accommodating. She knew the menu well and made great recommendations. Love this place! So glad it has come to the Weehawken neighborhood. I can't wait to go back and enjoy with friends!

Yelp
Came her with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and had a lovely dinner. They had a pre-fix menu option so we went with that and ordered additional items off the regular menu. I have to start off by saying service was incredible- waitress and manager frequently checked on us and the staff made sure our table was clean and we had what we needed. Ambiance is nice but not overly dim/romantic. For the food- standouts were crab salad (4.5/5)- this dish was fresh, flavorful, and unique. Also, octopus (5/5)- juicy, tender, and perfectly cooked. I really enjoyed the steak (4.5/5) as well- it was well seasoned, cooked well, and accompanied by a delicious potato hash brown. The only dish that was a let down for me was the risotto (1/5)- it wasn't creamy enough and had some sort of radicchio or lettuce that made the dish taste bitter. Drinks were good too, we ended up getting a bottle of Chianti to share after the first round of cocktails and it accompanied the meal perfectly. Overall, I would highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

Yelp
This restaurant was very much needed in the area. Food was great! Ambiance was top-tier and the drinks were so delicious. I was pleasantly surprised this restaurant had a lounge in the back. Great date night spot. Some neighbors are becoming fast regulars. I had a delicious heirloom salad, shrimp cocktail with Coq au vin.

Frank E.

Yelp
We have visited this location numerous times. The barroom to the left is nice, but the seating to the right of the entrance makes you feel like you're eating in a diner. The "lounge" is a very cool room - it is unfortunately almost never open as it seems the restaurant rarely has enough patrons to warrant staffing it. Confusing to see employees serve food in baseball hats while the bald floor manager sells steak frites for $65 ($18 more than Minetta Tavern's and $1 more than Raoul's across the river) and pretends he runs Le Bernardin. Every seafood dish we have ordered here (especially the crab) has been salted to a point that made us question its freshness. The subpar service/average food (albeit interesting) makes it difficult to justify the price-point. Pretentiousness rings loud in an empty restaurant. We gave this place more chances than it deserved and decided not to return.
google avatar

Valentina Y.

Yelp
Came in for brunch. Such a nice place. The food was delicious. Can't wait to try it for dinner! Service was courteous and so attentive! Drinks were soo good!

Yelp
Service is friendly, food is so so, price is super expensive. Speed is terrible! Not worth try.

Dina M.

Yelp
We tried the new happy hour menu tonight. The Merguez Croquettas and the Sliders were amazing, as were the drinks and the service (as usual). We enjoy the dinner menus as well but it's nice to now have a local place to stop in for a quick bite and drinks.
google avatar

LeAnne B.

Yelp
Incredible new spot in the neighborhood. Everything we ordered was superb - oysters were fresh, cheese puffs were incredibly tasty, and the salmon perfectly cooked. I ordered the coconut cocktail and was as impressed with it as I was with everything else. Plus the staff is very attentive and nice! Honestly, go here instead of going into the city!
google avatar

Savi S.

Yelp
Nice ambience, but I don't recommend their Sole Fish, doesn't taste fresh to me, there is fishy and stinky taste in it.
google avatar

Jill W.

Yelp
Fabulous all around. Great service, food and ambience. Quiet and great wine list, too!
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Great ambience, great food. And I appreciated the noise level allowed for conversation without yelling. We enjoyed the chickpea panise and shrimp cocktail apps. Also loved the filet of sole and lamb ragout pasta. Niki at the front desk was great(!) as well as all of the wait staff. We will be back.

jodi f.

Yelp
Pretty outdoor dining, nice staff and good food. We enjoyed the lamb pasta and the parfait!

Yelp
Great brunch, staff friendly and on time if everything Very modern good parking and view of the city

Adam K.

Yelp
This was our first time to this restaurant as it recently opened on our block. We were excited since we've seen a lot of good reviews about the original location and our neighborhood lacks restaurant options. The decor was nice inside, but it was quite loud with the piped in music and sound travels throughout the restaurant. The food was ok at best for brunch. The service could use some improvement as it lacked urgency, attentiveness and friendliness. We're not looking for 5-star service, but the hospitality for a new restaurant in the neighborhood was not there. This place has potential, but not sure if we would go back.

Alexandra G.

Yelp
This French food made me sad :( Lovely restaurant and impeccable service. We loved our BEET & ENDIVE appetizer and the WHITE COSMO was a beautifully balanced cocktail, plus I'm a sucker for anything with Elderflower. The rest of the meal was was just 'meh'. The EGGPLANT BABAGANOUSH appetizer was tasty (smoky and some nice heat from the sumac). The accompanying lavash crackers were a nice change from pita bread but the runny soupy texture of the babaganoush was off putting. The "COQ AU VIN" lacked the depth of flavor I expect to enjoy in this dish - I didn't taste the thyme, bay leaf or garlic. It was just very bland. It was also runny. This dish came with a side of späetzle which is a kind of Central European egg pasta (think Germany or Hungary) and not something usually found in French cookery. By nature, späetzle is bland but a great base for something very flavorful as späetzle absorbs that flavor. Not the case this time. I barely ate half of this entree and took the rest home. The next day, I heated up the coq au vin with a bay leaf and some crushed garlic. I also added some frozen pearl onions. This made a nice lunch over the left over späetzle I had warmed up with a splash of cream, some melted butter and chopped up fresh parsley, which gave the späetzle a bit of extra flavor and a little browning. However, I don't know if having to DIY a dish for which I had paid USD 34.00 is something I would want to do again. To round off our meal, we were disappointed that a French restaurant did not offer a cheese plate for dessert and gave the TAHITIAN VANILLA BEAN CHEESECAKE a try. It which had a lovely smooth texture but the red berries gelee lacked the pucker inducing sourness that would have been a wonderful contrast to the sweetness of the cheesecake. All in all, not as good as the Montclair location but it was lovely to be able to go for a stroll after our meal and enjoy the beautiful view. The restaurant interior is very welcoming and service exceptional. Would come again to try brunch.

Mark N.

Yelp
Nice setting, attentive and friendly service and very good food. First time here and will definitely be back

Kevin O.

Yelp
Welcome addition to the neighborhood. Decor is charming, food is very fresh and preparation is solid. Tried the babaganoush, branzino and coq au vin. All were solid dishes, even if none were quite "I have to have this again." The one piece that feels out of place is the music, both the selection and the volume. If they are going for a French neighborhood vibe with classic dishes they are pretty close - except for the Led Zeppelin at volume at least 50% too loud. I hope they fix it, because I'd like to be a regular.
