Former Accords Space Will Transform Into an Italian-Influenced Restaurant | Eater Montreal

"In Ottawa, the prominent restaurant Fauna is one Marion helped open, and his work there is cited as part of his experience shaping contemporary, ingredient‑forward dining." - Tim Forster

We had a lovely dinner with friends here, I walk by often and have been wanting to try it. Honestly the food could not be any more delicious and perfectly prepared! I had two small plates, scallops and soft shell crab. The scallops were the absolute BEST I have ever had! Who knew in Ottawa no less! My husband also had the soft shell crab then the duck, our friends had the endive salad and tagliatelle. All delicious. For desert we had the apple “pie” and wow!🤯 They have an extensive wine list & wonderful cocktails. Service was friendly and attentive. It is definitely quite pricey, you can’t get a bottle of wine under $100, so for us it would not be a “regular” spot, but a wonderful indulgence.

I feel like I stepped into a casual but high end, elevated, swanky NYC hot spot when I walked into Fauna. The atmosphere is cool vibes, the music was fitting... and then came the food. THE FOOD... omg the food was incredible. High end chef plates came out one after the other. We had the endive salad, mushroom bisque and softshell crab, each one perfect and I could have had seconds. Our mains blew us away. I have never tasted duck the way Fauna prepared it, smoked with a touch of sweet with all the right sides! The parpadelle with beef was excellent! Service was also on another level, always checking on us. Servers started by asking about allergies, which mean they care and are attentive - this was also appreciated. PS. They also have a great non-alcoholic menu! I would return in a heartbeat. They also have a private room, and i would have a larger gathering or party at Fauna as well. 5⭐️ on everything!

We had the soft shell crab and endive salad as appetizers. For the mains we had the spaghetti, smoked duck breast and dry aged PEI rib eye steak. I have to say it blew me away! The crab was deep fried, but still light somehow, very tender with a wonderful sauce on the side. The salad was ok in my opinion. The spaghetti was cooked in a really nice cream sauce with lots of truffles on top. The flavor combination was great. The duck was very very good, and the mushrooms it came with are like none I've ever tasted, beautiful texture, cooked to perfection. But even better was the steak. My God that steak is glorious 🤩! The cornbread it came with was perfectly moist, not dry at all with a really nice herb infused butter. Even the kale the steak came with tasted good, and kale is usually bitter..not this one. If you are visiting Ottawa, I highly reccomend Fauna as it currently sits as my best resturant in town.

Went here for a friend’s birthday dinner and had a great time! The Fauna Burger and Iberian Pork were both super tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The service was pleasant overall, and while we didn’t see our server too often, everything we needed was taken care of. We also brought in a cake for the occasion, and just a quick heads-up for anyone planning the same, there’s a $5 per person fee for outside cakes. All in all, a really nice spot for a special night out!

Google
The best steak I've ever had. I know it comes with a high price tag but what else can you expect? I don't know where they got it from or how they cooked it. All I know is I want it again. The tuna was good but I did much prefer the crab cake. The atmosphere and ambiance is spot-on and the staff were very friendly. If you have any Amex benefits, this is the place to spend them.

Food was great, and service was even better. Best service i’ve ever had in 5-7 years. The deer tartare was so good and was better than most other tartare i’ve had recently. The matcha mousse was also phenomenal. They even put my coat on for me when we left.

I wanted to share my wonderful experience with Fauna. I work in the restaurant industry, and I'm able to recognize how hard an establishment works to make the guest experience absolutely perfect. Fauna fell no short of that. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the what I can assume to be a manager, he was smiley and sat me immediately after confirming my reservation. I was then greeted by the talented and welcoming Sydney. From then on, she expertly guided me through the various and impressive wine selections. It was my birthday dinner and they brought over several tasters until I found the perfect glass of white wine. After looking over their seasonal and rotating menu, I decided on their: soft shell crab dish, fish cakes, and their truffle cacio e Pepe. Sydney got that in for me right away and in no time I was brought the first dish. Their soft shell crab was crunchy, crispy and flavourful. It had a crunchy and fresh daikon slaw. It was paired with a fish egg mayo that had such a lovely texture with the soft shell crab. The plate was practically clean. Brought out next was Thai fish cakes. The curried lobster bisque was so spicy but in such a thoughtful way. It wasn't offensive but paired nicely with the texture of the fish cakes and the subtlety of the creme fraiche. I was starting to get full after two "appetizer" plates but I couldn't say no to their cassarecce pasta. It came out and looked like it came out of a Michelin star restaurant. They did not skimp on the black truffle. You could tell the pasta was fresh. The heaviness of the Louis d'or was honestly so satisfying. I would come back just for this pasta alone. It was fulfilling and delicious. At this point I couldn't bear to think of dessert, though I really wanted to. Which means I'll have to come back for a second visit. The chefs and creative team in the kitchen know exactly what they are doing. I have heard from MANY people in the restaurant industry that Fauna is by far the best restaurant in Ottawa, for Canadian and fine dining cuisine. I was not disappointed and am proud to say I wholeheartedly agree. They were utilizing local and seasonal ingredients throughout the meal. Not only was the food fantastic but the entire ambiance of the restaurant speaks for why Fauna deserves #1. The male bartender (didn't grab his name) and Sydney made me constantly feel special and like a welcome guest in the restaurant, even on a slower Sunday evening. The personalized attention in my conversations with them both were top notch. I cannot speak enough about how truly amazing this meal was. For a first time diner, but a forever fan now, Fauna you deserve accolades beyond belief. Thank you, for the best meal, in the city that fun forgot (but it wasn't forgotten at Fauna). I spent roughly $110+ on the whole check but I would highly suggest coming with another person as I was indulgent, the two first plates could easily be shareables.

I went to fauna twice during a weeklong trip to Ottawa from Maine. I went to the restaurant in November 2019 and really enjoyed it and needed to go back. I absolutely loved it and tried various dishes. The staff were incredible—they were very relatable, friendly and easy to talk to. You could tell they really enjoyed working there and I’ll definitely go back again! Felix worked on the second night I was there and his customer service was impeccable just as the other team members were the week before. If you have the time, go to this restaurant—it won’t disappoint.

Yelp
The service here is incredible. Our host (so sorry I cannot recall his name was next level! The drinks are incredible and well crafted. Food was absolutely delicious. I cannot wait to return to this place next time I am in Ottawa

Yelp
What a cool an interesting neighborhood bar and grill. As their name suggest, they source their ingredients for their menu locally. As well, they add a spin on traditional Canadian cuisine which elevates the menu to another level. The service was fantastic. The mixed drinks were spot on. For appetizers, I had oysters and veal tartar was by far, the best I have ever had. It was fresh and well seasoned. For dinner, I had the lamb chops. Perfectly cook to temp and flavorful. I tried a couple of desserts but the tarimisou was my favorite. Creamy, not to rich, with a cookie bottom. And of course, I had to have cappuccino with it. I will definitely visit here again next time I am in town. Bon Apetit.

Yelp
I take it as a good sign when you struggle to order because too many options look killer. I experienced that at Fauna and the menu is actually pretty brief. Bonus points: they have corkage.

Yelp
We decided to make a reservation at Fauna to celebrate my wife's birthday - we had heard a lot about this place and thought it was worth giving it a try. The menu isn't huge but they had the right stuff for my mostly vegetarian wife and meatatarian me. They also had a wonderful bar stocked with great stuff so I took advantage of their gin selection. The ambiance was fantastic, not too loud, the service was absolutely wonderful and that was before we ate any food. I ordered the bison carpaccio and it was one of the best I've had - like Montreal good. My wife got the salmon that I tried (it was wonderful) but I got the Iberico pork chop and it did not disappoint. Top notch food and the service was just amazing. Really well done. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
I came here last night for the first time in over a year (we managed to fit an outdoor dining experience in during the pandemic on Frank Street!), and I was delighted. I made a reservation for a quiet Tuesday evening with a friend who was in town from Montreal, and we had a great time. We ordered the Free Solo cocktail and the cocktail with sweet vermouth (I can't remember the name), elk carpaccio, a dozen oysters and the soft shell crab. My friend is on Keto, so the menu was easy to navigate, and we had a fair amount of options. Everything was delicious! The ambience was great - there were two other couples in the restaurant, so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. We were really happy with the dining experience.

Yelp
Review long overdue... I was here before COVID hit. Delicious and amazing experience in Ottawa!!! We found this place online and it didn't disappoint. Very interesting menu and cozy place with large windows to look out from. We tried many items. Beef cheeks were so tender. The eggplant carpaccio was made in a creative way bursting with flavors. Duck breast kimchi was amazing. And omg their chocolate mousse with passion fruit was bomb.com. The oysters were also very fresh. Everything was a delight! Check it out if you're in Ottawa!

Yelp
Did the outdoor patio, which was pleasant. Service was exceptional. For the food, I had the quail meal. The presentation was beautiful and I enjoyed all the different flavours of heritage tomatoes, a seared Bok Choy, beans and duck pate. Each bite was a treat. Hubs had the burger, and, while it was good, it was a mistake to order. The fries were not worth commenting on. The meat itself was nicely cooked, but it lacked impact overall. Pick something more adventurous. They had a number of wines we had not come across, nice selection. Would I return? Yes Would I recommend? Yes

Yelp
I was eager to try this place regarding its reputation as one of top restaurants in Ottawa.. not sure why! Let's start with decor, well lovely and the ambiance is romantic it's really nice from inside... service well he was kind but an issue came up very similar to one of the elite reviewers on this place. We came in when they first opened had reservations at 5:15 (they open at 5) the gentleman sat us at a weird table right across from the door. It was cold so I asked if I can move to another table (the place is EMPTY) he said no sorry then he left. When he came back I said sorry I don't get it the place is empty I have reservations why I can't change my table? He said he needs to ask the manager? He went came back and moved me to the one right next to it!!! Yep he said he can't do more! I swear we go to desserts and we were the only people in the restaurant!!!! Yes!!! Anyways we ordered a virgin drink they made a decent one, not sure what was in it but it was nice... we had the squash soup it was great then main dishes came with disappointments! Scallops lacked flavour and the pasta was better but overloaded with mushrooms... we ordered both desserts on the menu and were less than average! Maybe this place was a hit when it first opened but now ... not sure!

Yelp
Seasonal menu, amazing cocktails, fun and trendy atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable servers- always a treat to go to fauna. We love!!

Yelp
The food was outstanding. Split the scallops and pork belly as an appetizer. Wife had the oysters and lived the duck. All outstanding. The steak was even better. One the best I've had.

Yelp
Big Drew doesn't like leaving bad reviews. But I was so disappointed last night and I had to let you know. Maybe it was an off night in the kitchen or maybe this is the new normal. I've had 2 good meals at Fauna before and so this was surprisingly bad. First - bartender - if you can't make a proper gin martini straight up, with garbage olives that didn't come from the bottom of the jar, then you need to relearn your craft. Ordered it straight, came dirty. No problem. Big Drew hates to send food or drink back, but my wife insisted, realizing it was a quick fix. It came back not dirty, but still tasting awful (bad vermouth or???). Inexplicable and inexcusable. At $18 a pop. I had a few sips of it and left it but didn't send it back again. Blowies. On to the food: Zucchini opener was tasty. Very fresh and flavourful and complex. The peppers dish was beautiful looking but just dumb. Can an appy be dumb? Yes, this one was. 40 shishito peppers which we had 5 or 10 and then was like 'ok I can't eat anymore of this'. It was not very tasty. Mains: eggplant dish had some delicious bites but half of it was totally undercooked and inedible. Super frustrating. And the cilantro was SHARP. Not sharp tasting but physically sharp in chewing and swallowing. Annoying. Burger was ok but SUPER salty and pickles way overpowered. Fries over seasoned but I ate them all. Aioli was super mild and not very flavourful. Service was excellent. Very attentive. Patio seating was fine. I've given Fauna a 4 star review so I'm not picking on them. I WILL RETURN. But you guys need to step up your game when the bill is $184 for 2 people.

Yelp
Wow. Fauna has shot up to the list as one of my all time favourite restaurants in the entire city. The food blew me away. Started off with venison tartare with puffed quinoa and taro chips and a goat cheese whip. The chips were super crisp and dry (not at all oily) and the tartare was amazing, melt in your mouth and paired perfectly with the taro chips. We then ordered the duck and the dry aged steak for two. The mushrooms and potato pave really stole the show. The steak was amazing - so good and all steak is now ruined for me, but I could not get over how delicious the mushrooms were and how cool this new way of cooking/frying potato was (they pile it with duck fat). The duck itself was good, tasted a bit like roast duck, but definitely as good as the steak. We ended it with their cookie crumb mousse eclaire, which was delicious and not too rich. Fauna also has their own line of orange wine, I wasn't a huge fan of it, as it was a very dry wine for me, but it was good. can't wait to go again!

Yelp
Surprised this made it anywhere near 2019's Canada's best restaurants list. Mediocre to average food at a hefty price point. When my cousin visited me in Ottawa, I suggested this restaurant due to the high ratings and reviews, as well as being named one of the top restaurants in Canada. However, it was a disappointing choice, and unfortunately Yelp let me down this time. We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 mains. The bison tartare ($18) was our favourite dish. It actually was a decent size, with plenty of chips to pair with the tartare. Then it went downhill from there. We like shishito peppers, so we tried the shishito relleno ($20) stuffed with lamb, recommended by the waiter. The portion was small, I think we got 4 peppers, and the flavours were nothing special and honestly an odd pairing. For mains, I got the lamb and she got the hen. We shared both, and they were $35 each. I think I slightly preferred the lamb itself, but the hen had better accompaniments. I felt like again, for both mains, the flavours were lacking, and portions were tiny. Both my cousin and I felt like we would skip having dessert here and head to Mooshu Ice cream down the street, having already spent nearly $70 a person for a mediocre dinner. I do like the ambiance, and the waiter was nice, patient, and provided recommendations. Service was fine, our waters were refilled in a timely manner. I've had much better food at similar price points and similar styles. I would not recommend going, and I will not be back.

Tuyen T.

Yelp
Cozy space, friendly staff, good taste of food. But oysters are inversely proportional to the price, $23 for half a dozen (I chose 1 dozen). But the size of oysters is too small, I don't feel suitable for the price. Cocktails was ok, not bad ! But still recommend to come here

Yelp
This was an awesome meal. Had an excellent cocktail to start. Had great service and very good wine recommendations from our server (our table split two bottles over the course of the evening). The food was delicious and included some very creative dishes and plating. Lots of fresh vegetables and delicious accompaniments. Also, a great patio - open at the sides but well-lit and lots of heaters. Taking off one star just because this was a very, very expensive meal, and I didn't quite feel it was worth the price - loved everything but just wish it was Slightly more affordable.

Yelp
I am a big foodie from Toronto, and I have to say that I am excited to come to Ottawa so I can visit Fauna. It is one of my favorite restaurants! Everything is good here, and the prices are so reasonable for what you get. I highly highly recommend it! The first time I dined at Fauna (a number of years ago) they had a dry aged steak for two on the menu - it was absolutely mind blowing and I haven't been able to find anything like it since! I hope they bring it back!

Yelp
We had no idea where to go for dinner and walked by this place after getting ice cream from Moo Shu. They feature New Canadian (or American for me) large and small plates. Since we weren't too hungry, the five of us shared 4 small plates and 1 large plate. Their portions are on the small side, so I normally would be hungry after eating at a place like this. Their menu changes, so you won't get the same thing every time you go. Great presentation and fresh ingredients, but the flavors weren't too memorable. My favorite things we ordered that day was the octopus ceviche and the beet tartare. I loved the texture of both the octopus and beets. The soft shell crab is too small. I understand it's a small plate, but 1/3 of a crab for $19 CAD (~$15 USD) is not really worth it. The duck we ordered was fine. I enjoyed the grains and shiitake mushrooms that came with it more than the duck itself. I forget what cocktail we ordered, but it was quite strong.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Great summer patio, and tables are actually distanced unlike others. Overall, the food here is a bit more on the expensive side, but the quality and presentation justifies it. The burrata appetizer was disappointing, so I would skip that one next time. The portion of burrata we were served seemed like it was 1/4 of the normal size. Everything else was great. Service also was very good.

C P.

Yelp
My first visit here upon recommendation from some Ottawa foodies. The menu was very thin on choice but quite pricey. Forget about the wine list of triply marked-up wines. My main was a "Burger: Foie torchon, morels, Brie, Dijon, fries - $39". I expected a bun with mi-cuit duck foie gras. I got a beef patty (nicely cooked) but no foie torchon. I asked the waiter to show me the foie. He couldn't and went to the chef, who told him that the torchon melts into the Brie. That does not happen! I told the waiter that the menu item did not even mention the burger containing beef. It was menues as Foie Torchon, after all. Ultimately, for my partly eaten meal I was offered a $23 reduction. I still tipped the waiter but the chef never showed up to speak with me, even though the restaurant was only 10% full. Top Canadian bistro? Not likely. I expected much better from a restaurant with its reputation. Disappointed and will never be back. Incidentally, the 80-day dry aged ribeye meal for two is now at $120. Quite a bump! 10% occupancy on a sunny Sunday summer evening tells it all. James

Yelp
This restaurant is worth all the hype and more! Hands down one of the best steaks I've ever had. Fauna blew us away. The casual atmosphere is really inviting and trendy but the food is top quality. Small plates, however we left absolutely full after the recommended portions suggested by the waiter. Staff was very friendly and knew what they were talking about.

Yelp
I had this place on my radar during my three week stay in Ottawa. Four of us had a reservation here on a Friday night, but after dining out for about 20 consecutive nights, these peeps were tired out and ready to bail. I, however, was not. I was all in regardless, and they eventually decided to follow suit. Needless to say, I don't think anyone regretted the decision. Most of us who went to dinner here that night had previously eaten at some of the best restaurants in Ottawa along the same share plate theme as Fauna. Play. Gezellig. Navarra. Town. We all left here in agreement that the meal we had at Fauna was the best we had in Ottawa. One person suggested it was the best meal she ever had. I have to say ... I left thinking the same. In fact, we loved it so much here, we cancelled our reservation for 8 people for the following evening at Beckta just to come back here. Where to begin? How about the cocktails? For $18, the sweet ash (bourbon / armagnac / bitters / cinnamon / ginger / smoked hibiscus) didn't blow me away, but I did like the gold fashioned (ungava gin / cardamom / citrus bitters / grapefruit zest) for $12 just a little better. I got to try the $13 blue sea (ungava gin / cucumber / black pepper / grapefruit / lemon) and liked that one the best of the three. On the second night, I had the Tom Collins (ginger infused ungave / lemon / vanilla / silk rose bitters / applewood / mesquite) for $14, which was by far my favortie. Great selection of biodynamic wines in addition to the regular wine list. We were fortunate enough to snag the last bottle of a 2003 Côtes du Roussillon ($70). To no surprise, the cork broke, but Alex, our sommelier, pushed it down hard and filtered out the wine for us into a decanter. Toward the end of dinner, Alex spent a solid 15 minutes with our table going over our wine options and was generous enough to let us try two different dessert wines, one of which was a 1986 (my birth year)! He also highlighted (literally) some suggestions for our reservation the following night, three of which we ended up ordering. I think we were all happiest with the 2005 biodynamic Bordeaux ($115). Appetizers: -Olive plate (not listed in the online menu) -Burrata ($18) walnut pesto / sourdough / tomatoes / olive oil / maldon -Jumbo soft shell crab ($15) tempura / smoked tomato / lemon / ginger / slaw -Lentil falafel ($16) baba ganoush / beet greens / radish / peppers / tzatziki -Horse carpaccio (not listed in the online menu) Olive plate was good, but pretty standard. The burrata was by far my favorite. The soft shell crab was a close second. Nice crunch to the falafel without being overdone. As for the horse, I could only get one person to share, which was fine by me because I ended up loving it not knowing what to expect (this was my first time trying it). Entrees: -Pork ($26) polenta / snow peas / birch syrup / beet greens / chanterelles / milk weed -Hanger steak ($21) bacon, walnut, blue cheese potato salad / mushrooms / cherry tomatoes / asparagus / smoked harissa -Halibut (not listed in the online menu) For the pork, I was expecting pork loin, but was pleasantly surprised when we got a pork chop with the bone-in. I was equally surprised by the perfect cook on the pork as well as the presentation of the polenta, which was encased squarely in bread crumbs then baked. Very interesting. The hanger steak may have been in my top 5 hanger steaks of all time. Perfect sear on the steak, just the right amount of spice, and ideally cooked medium-rare even though the table agreed on medium whereas I would have preferred rare. The halibut was nice and light and all the ingredients paired nicely. Desserts, in order of most to least favorite (we ordered all three options, because why compromise?): -Strawberry shortcake ($12) strawberry curd / custard / lavender / meringue / biscuit crumble / lemon sorbet -Japanese cheesecake ($11) rhubarb / caramelized white choc / strawberry sorbet -Chocolate and malt (not listed in the online menu) Our server Emily did great considering how busy she seemed to be on the first night. Very friendly and armed with many great suggestions. Request her if you can. We ordered just about all the same dishes on both nights. I found the food to overall be a tad better on the first night than the second, but perhaps it was just the absence of the element of surprise. I could do without the modern art, but who cares when the food and service are this good? For the quality, the experience and the value considering the reasonable prices, this is an absolute must-do in Ottawa.

Yelp
Had the meal of my life at this place a few nights ago. Get the quail with farro, peas and bok choy - you will not be disappointed. If you like kombucha, I also suggest trying the sour cider by Revel. The icing on the cake: the service was spectacular as was the overall ambiance on their patio. Easiest 5 stars I've ever given!

Vanessa L.

Yelp
They organized the space and patio very well to seat as many people as safely possible during COVID. I'm glad to see they're in business! My partner's parents recommended this place as it was in Canada top 100 restaurants. Although, I was already advised against getting dessert and certain main dishes because they didn't add up to the hype. Nonetheless, I went in to try tasty foods and experience dining in again. We were seated inside and per covid guidelines, the tables were separated with large spaces in between, all waiters wore masks and we did too until we settled down to eat. The interior was beautiful with a rustic, home-y but sophisticated feel. The waiter was very timely throughout and provided us with new dishes just as we finished our previous. Overall 10/10 on service. We ordered dealers choice which was an on-the-fly, make-shift drink that the bartender brews up. I was asked what I prefer and like and went with that. It was super tasty and I definitely recommend if you love trying cocktails! Our appetizers were 2 orders of 1/2 dozen raw oysters, halibut ceviche, and beef tartare. Overall the sauces with the oysters were delicious and so was the beef tartare (it was so creamy!). However, the halibut ceviche fell flat. The sauce was really strong to a point it was almost a little pungent with a sour taste. I was not a fan of that. Otherwise, I was very happy with the choices of raw appetizers. Looking at the menu, only the swordfish and duck breast caught our eye so we went for those. The duck was delicious but a little tough and hard to to cut through. Despite this, the sauces and ingredients mixed very very well with the overall taste. My partner's swordfish was really good as well. The swordfish was delicate and super tasty. I think I preferred the swordfish over my duck breast (even though that was already delicious!). I was very happy with the mains. These 6 dishes we ordered (4 apps, 2 mains) made us very content and full. However, I would say they do have a few dishes that are hit or misses, which I why I took a star off. I am, however, still very impressed with the restaurant as wait staff, food presentation, and atmosphere was wonderful. Albeit, it's on the pricier side but a good experience nonetheless. I recommend if you're looking to explore different foods!

Yelp
Having tried this restaurant maybe a couple of years ago, I always thought back to the yummy food and absolutely amazing cocktails, so I decided to make a visit on a weekday evening. What I tried: - To drink: strawberry fields - I usually really like their cocktails because they are strong! This one was delicious, but had quite a lot of egg white foam. I would probably try a stronger-tasting one next time! - Swordfish crudo: I thought the portion was small at 4 pieces of crudo, but the fish was very fresh. However, it was a little difficult to chew, compared to say, scallop crudo. Accompagniments were very citrusy but did not seem to add to the dish much, I preferred just having the crudo on its own! - Beef tongue pastrami: WOW. I wish I could have ordered 2 or 3 of these (to replace the other dishes I got)! I really love tongue due to the texture, and this one was perfectly tender, and sliced thinly. The accompagniments were delicious, and having the sauce au jus made it comfortingly meaty. The mustard seeds and corn mixture also went very well with each bite of tongue. :P - Eggplant pakoras: I don't really know why I was thinking of ordering an Indian dish at a Canadian restaurant; I wish I had chosen another dish! It was the most salty dish of the night, but the curry undertones were not too strong. If you don't like spicy, don't get this! - Smoked bison bavette: This was probably the second best dish, but it was much less tender than the pastrami. Next time, I will probably choose a different meat, such as duck, or the fish they had. I really like the interiors! Although it can be loud, it's not too loud, but your conversation won't be heard by other tables. I have sat at the bar previously, which is also a fun experience because the bartender is entertaining to watch when making drinks!

Yelp
Considered part of 2019's Canada's 100 Best Restaurants list, Fauna turned out to be a major disappointment. I wanted to treat my parents to this restaurant but not only did it miss the mark as one of Canada's best, I don't believe it even succeeded in being a good restaurant. We ordered 3 items: Okonomiyaki ($17), Pork Belly ($19), and 80-Day Dry Aged Rib Eye for Two ($80). The first two were the recommendation of the waitress. Perhaps a westernized interpretation, the only resemblance this okonomiyaki had to the popular Japanese street food was a soggy cabbage pancake. Gone were the distinctive tang of okonomiyaki sauce and light bonito flakes and its place were a glorified American barbecue sauce with sautéed shiitake mushrooms and pickled ginger. To add insult to injury, this $17 pancake was the size of my palm. The pork belly was similarly underwhelming. Despite the eye-catching ingredients listed on the menu (Tamarind! Maple! "Sichuan" Pork Rinds!), their flavours were muted at best and absent at worst. Sure, we don't need to be able to taste and identify every single ingredient in a dish and layers in flavouring is good. However, when all you're getting is a pan-fried piece of pork belly with a one-dimensional mole sauce you can make at home, you start wondering: 1) where are the things you're paying $19 for and 2) is this considered false advertising? The rib eye was nicely plated; however, the steak itself consisted of a-third, if not more, of pure fat. While we understand fat is required for flavour, the amount on that steak was excessive. A third of the original steak could have been rebuilt with those chunks of fat - and that's not including the amount we swallowed. Unfortunately, because we had shared the dish, we didn't realize just how much there was until we compared plates close to the end of the meal. Furthermore, the steak was so salty that the side dishes were necessary to mask it and even then, my lips stung even hours after. The service was subpar, if not mediocre. We arrived to a near empty restaurant, with one other table of two. We were told that there were reservations so we would be seated at a table where the afternoon sun was blinding. They acknowledged how bright it was but made no attempts to make us more comfortable. Furthermore, by the time we left (2 hours after), the restaurant was still empty with only 10 patrons (3 tables) in total, including us. So much for reservations. The waitress was curt and inattentive as well, refilling only 2 out of 3 glasses of water the entire time. When we raised our concerns about the steak (I'll admit, we were a bit late doing so), she was immediately defensive, saying "It's because it's dry-aged." I don't think dry-aging creates huge chunks of fat, but ok. She came back and told us the chef said, "Our beef is fatty because it's dry-aged. You need the fat for flavour [We agree but, again, that amount was excessive]. Most people like it. If you don't, you don't have to eat it [Moot point since our plates were already cleared away then. It sounded more like she was saying (or implying with her tone) we just didn't know what good steak tastes like]. Here, you can have a dessert if you're still hungry. We'll give it to you." Although the offer of a free dessert was generous, the way it was delivered made it sound like they thought we were trying to scam them. While our comment may have been ill-timed, we weren't looking to get anything out of it and didn't appreciate what her tone implied. We were too bloated from the salt and grease in our meal anyway and as such, we declined the offer. At present time, I do not believe Fauna is befit the title of one of Canada's 100 Best Restaurants. Based on their food and service, I don't think they even deserve to be called a good restaurant. The fact that they are considered one of the best does a disservice to the many other great restaurants in Ottawa (and Canada).

Yelp
I have been to Fauna a few times over the years and it never disappoints. We came this time for a birthday dinner and everything was wonderful - cocktails, wine, food and service. would highly recommend.

Yelp
I came here with a friend for dinner two weeks ago and had the steelhead trout brandade. My friend got the halibut, and for dessert we had chocolate + ginger. My dish could have come with more bread to mop up the sauce with, but it was delicious nonetheless. The dessert was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the ginger worked well. The presentation for all three dishes was very good. In general, the waitress knew the dishes pretty well, but something about her was kind of off-putting. I'm not sure if she was just super quiet or just trying to not disturb us, but every time she came to check up on us or take away our plates, she just came up to us without saying a word so it was pretty awkward. That aside, the cocktail that the waitress recommended was superb (blue sea)!! It was very unique -- spicy, tangy, sweet, and fresh-tasting (cucumbers) all in one! This was possibly the best cocktail I've ever had. It lasted me my whole meal (usually I drink my cocktails pretty fast but this one I was satisfied with taking slow sips). The ambience was pretty intimate - ideal for a date or business meeting, but would also work for a nice dinner with friends or family. It's a pretty pricy restaurant but worth it if you want to treat yourself!

Yelp
Another delicious inventive and interactive evening. The food was wonderful and very well thought out. The place was slammed but the servers and the bar staff still made us feel like we were the only ones there. They took time to talk to us about the orange wine they had on the wine list and were happy to share their knowledge and experiences with us. The food came out in a timely manner and was hot and delicious. You can really sense the servers are proud of the restaurant and really want their clients to enjoy their experience. Can't wait to go back !

Yelp
Fauna made a list of the top restaurants in Canada so we wanted to check it out on our anniversary. First of all, you should definitely have a cocktail since they take a lot of pride in mixing up some pretty nice libations. Mine called for citrus, ginger and pepper flavours that could throw it out of balance, but it was superb! For food we tried all of the available appetizers but one, the lobster bisque. Photos are attached. Every dish was artfully presented, tasty, and suitable for sharing. I would like to return in the future for more cocktails and to try the main courses.

Yelp
Simply Amazing; the service, the atmosphere and above all, the food! Went for a late snack/dinner with a friend based on a recommendation from a coworker. Our server was quick, and knowledgable about the dishes and specials. We took her recommendations for the a braised beef special and the burrata. The small plates did not disappoint! The flavours of both plates were so enjoyable we were left speechless. The drinks were also amazing, try the blue sea, you won't regret it! The only downside is that it's a little loud in there, but that's just because it's pretty busy. Be sure to make a reservation.

Yelp
Came here with my partner for dinner on a Saturday night while were in town. I heard it was one of the top restaurants in Canada and wanted to give it a try. It has an casual, but upscale, bar/restaurant vibe. We were seated quickly and the servers were efficient. I ordered the Duck Breast and enjoyed it. The breast was juicy and had a nice crispy top. It was flavourful and paired well with the small side items (kimchi, corn, shiitake mushroom, and small scallion biscuits). In terms of things that could have been improved...I thought the price was a bit high for the quantity of food, even though the quality was great! (~$43 after tax+tip) More an observation during my experience - I'm usually used to servers being conversational when I go out to eat, but the servers that night more or less spoke only when they were taking an order or answering a question, which I found different and surprising at first. Overall, the food quality was great, but it's a more expensive place to dine and the portions might not fill you up.

Yelp
This restaurant is what Ottawa has been lacking for so long. The atmosphere is great and the food is original and delicious. The seasonal menus feature interesting flavour combinations and modernist techniques. Fauna has smaller servings so it's great for sharing!

Yelp
Hipster bar at bank street the place has a nice decor and good for late night drinks. Came here around 915 and was told that tasting menu is sold out which was quiet odd so ended up settling down for ala cart. Ordered the lamb tartare- photogenic plate but bland. Lamb Taste is very faint. Love the taro chips. Ham plate - this dish was absolute comfort food. I didn't care of the truffle shavings and the peaches were too little 3 thin slices, a little more could have gone a long way. Duck- horrible dish, it was just confused in many ways. Green onion pancake was like a fried dumpling, kimchi? Just kimchi, some random corn and mushrooms, duck seared well. I felt that it was going for a Peking duck approach but it got lost IMO. Nicely plated though. Price per dish is on the higher side and portions on the smaller side as well specially the mains. Apps were fine for portions.

Yelp
We chose to do the tasting menu with a wine pairing since I had read great reviews about Fauna. The decor was nice, and the service was excellent, but that is where things ended. I was disappointed in the meal and wine pairings overall. 5 courses were served and the only dish that stood out was the 3rd serving with a decent wine pairing. The other dishes were good, but the wine pairings didn't math the food. The sweetbread was the highlight of the meal complemented perfectly by the mushrooms and fried cauliflower.

Yelp
As good as it gets. Exemplary service, nice atmosphere, and creative high-quality food. As others have noted, it's a little heavily-weighted towards the carnivorous, but it is not your standard beef and pork. We sampled octopus, cod, salmon, goose, elk, caribou, bison and more. Every mouthful was interesting - a few merely good, much more often amazing. Try it. Be delighted.

Yelp
We stopped in here for lunch and it was really nice. The restaurant was empty because of a snowstorm, but the food was delicious! The gnocchi could have had more depth but the burger we got was out of this world!

Yelp
We decided to try the tasting menu and it was excellent! 5 courses with wine pairing. Every dish was of quality, mixing well flavours, everything well though if. Salmon belly, duck hearts, cornish hen...I felt the menu was creative and carefully prepared. I also liked that overall it wasn't an excessive amount of food. My husband and I love trying the tasting menus whenever we go to a new restaurant in a new city, but quite often I feel like it is just waaaay too much food. Not tonight, it was just perfect, not the kind you leave the restaurant feeling bad from eating too much.

Yelp
We went in for our anniversary, they gave us two drinks, very strong drink too. This restaurant is very new and the menu is very creative as well. We had foam mushroom. Well... we chose to get the surprise menu, it was full of surprises.

Yelp
My mom was visiting from out of town and I decided we should go try Fauna, looking at the reviews I thought it would be a lovely place to visit. We both loved the ambiance and the food was very tasty. The service on the other hand was very miss leading, the servers seemed cold and uninviting. Nevertheless we enjoyed our drinks and food! We had ordered an appetizer but it had never arrived. My mother and I weren't too bothered by it and decided to just enjoy our drinks and entrees! When the bill arrived we checked to see if the appetizer was there, and there it was, with two other entrees that we had never ordered. Our server was a space cadet the whole night and the other servers seemed aloof. I would give it another try but the services was not up to par with the reputation that Ottawa has given it.

Yelp
Called to ask if a table was available at the last minute on a Saturday evening (yes, mea culpa). They said no table, but would hold a spot at the bar for me and my friend, if we could get there soon. We really appreciated being accommodated...it's great when a place actually wants your business. Sat at the bar. Ordered a great Beaujolais, upon bartender's reco. I don't usually like Beaujolais. The venison tartare was awesome. Brussel sprouts were crispy and savoury. Pig cheeks were a nice indulgence. The deep fried octopus was crispy but not heavy, and the sauce was delicious. We even got a free glass of beer because someone forgot to mark that they already picked it up! Had a great meal. Would definitely go back! Thanks!

Yelp
This place is lacking in the flavor department...not sure how the fruity elements made it on to plate but did not need to be there. Avoid the bison and elk carpaccio Elk would have been great but the peach puree was not needed. The salad with chicken skin was delicious really enjoyed that. The service was great but overall would avoid this place

Yelp
Absolutely great vibes in when u walk in. Lighting sets a mood. Ordered the 80 day ribeye which is hands down the best steak of my life. Every dish served was gorgeous and delish to boot. Highly recommend- will return and promote to everyone - took business cards to hand out. Dessert was clean and tasty finshied with a vermouth pineapple drink that stirred my soul like it was a heavenly nectar poured straight from a cloud in the sky above. Service was great and staff recommendations were what made it a 5 star place

Yelp
Fauna. As opposed to Flora. Yes, we're talking about animals. And we had them all - fish, fowl, wild game, farm animal. Fauna has a blind five course tasting menu for $75 per person. The offer wine pairings at $40 or $60. Not more booze, just better quality. The blind menu is not an effort by the kitchen staff to get rid of leftovers or slow moving items. Rather it is an experiment with new dishes to see what might make it to the next month's menu. We started with champagne and a Mexican inspired ceviche. It was OK, but not great. The next course was venison tartare. Again OK but not great. But the third course was a roast boar belly with roasted vegetables that was simply divine - my favourite dish of the evening. It was perfectly paired with a white wine, whose name I can't recall. Next came duck breast on spätzle and mushrooms with a mushroom mousse. It too was very good and perfectly paired with a Nero d'Avola. The last course was dessert - cake and ice cream served with a muscadet - also good, but not really special. The service was great. The room is a bit noisy once all the table are full. So, what do I really think? Fauna was picked as one of the top 100 restaurants in Canada in 2017 - #65 to be precise. Only 5 restaurants in Ottawa made the list. So I went with pretty high expectations. But while Fauna was good, I can think of several other Ottawa restaurants where I have had a better meal.

Yelp
I've been to Fauna twice but this is my first review of them. Fauna has been a welcome addition to Ottawa's growing food scene. I came here on a Thursday night with my girlfriend and we looked through the menu. She settled on the soft shell crab appetizer and the lamb for the main, and I ordered the bison carpaccio to start and the quail as a main. Our drinks came after a short while as well. They have an interesting cocktail list and a very extensive wine list as well (and for those who are into wine, Fauna's wine director interned at the famed Noma in Copenhagen). The appetizers were delicious. The soft shell crab was soft on the inside and crispy and flavourful on the outside. The carpaccio was beautifully presented and a very well put together dish. Again, the flavour was spot on. The lamb and quail arrived shortly after we finished our appetizers. The lamb came with veggies and some couscous. The quail was rubbed with peri peri spice, and served on top of some smoked buttermilk and veggies on the side as well. Both dishes were delicious. The quail was a bit spicy, the peri peri rub definitely had a kick to it, but that's where the buttermilk comes in. You add a bit of it to the quail and immediately let up the spice and made the quail very enjoyable. Again, the seasoning was spot on and the meat was juicy and tender. My girlfriend really enjoyed the lamb as well, and the few bites of it that I had were very tasty. The dessert menu came after we finished and we picked the panacotta. It was a visually appetizing dish that tasted very good as well. Great way to finish the night. Fauna is an excellent restaurant and definitely one of the best in Ottawa. (As a note, our entire meal was covered by the restaurant. On her previous visit, my girlfriend left a few comments about one of the dishes with their management and management graciously invited us back to give them another try. Even prior to last night, Fauna was and remains one of our favourite restaurants in Ottawa.)

Yelp
I went to fauna about a month ago. I was drawn in by the longtime mystery of what it was to become. For months, it sat in the space with brown paper covering the windows. What was revealed was nothing short of amazing! I will give a short summary here, but I also wrote a blog post about it here: http://www.tobakiss.ca/fauna-fauna/ Make sure to get reservations! You will need it unless you want to sit at the bar. They are a locally sourced company and that reasonated very well with me. Service was excellent. The food was done tapas style and I would coin the type of food that they serve to be Asian-fusion tapas dishes. You will certainly have to order more than one. I loved the decor too. Reminded me of a restaurant that belonged on King West in Toronto.

Yelp
This place is outstanding, the decor is cozy and cool, but the food is where it's really at. The food is foodie heaven, small plates and large plates, which is the trend now in most foodie restaurants (think TOWN on Elgin - also great by the way). The menu is small and manageable for the kitchen, ensuring that everything that comes out is solid and well executed, instead of a massive menu where there are more hits and misses. Last time I went here had the Emu Carpaccio and the ''Pork'', the carpaccio was a revelation. Amazing flavors, with all the right notes of salt, acid and crunch, all perfectly balanced. The ''Pork'' was a sous vide bone in pork chop that was outstanding, with mushrooms and other perfectly cooked sides. Can't reccommend this place enough, it's probably my top restaurant in O-Town right now, right beside Supply and Demand.

Yelp
Great food, lively/vibrant atmosphere. Had the; tuna crudo (with coconut / kaffir / chili oil / kombu / grapefruit / scallion / black sesame); tempura skewer (scallop / chorizo / basil / cilantro / sweet chili) and mushroom inari (fried rice / ginger / napa / chantrelles / edamame) All amazing! Reservations are still tough to get, but if you are willing to sit at the bar, and go early-ish you can get in. Hope you enjoy as much as we did :)

Yelp
For foodies! Great ambiance, staff super nice! So all looked so good on menu I asked server to surprise me with anything! I got the Swordfish, was just delicious, served with sea asparagus! I had heard the portion size was small there but was delighted to see the size of my meal!! Will go back again!
