Reem’s: Major Bay Area Baker Finally Returns to Oakland, California | Eater SF

"An only-in-San Francisco hybrid video store–coffee shop on 18th Street is holding its annual Cutest Pet Contest; this year is the 27th annual affair. Per an Instagram post, there’s still time to submit: send a 5-by-7-inch photo of your cat or dog to fayescutest@gmail.com with name and age by Wednesday, July 23." - Paolo Bicchieri

Nine Spicy and Creamy Chai Drinks to Keep You Cozy in San Francisco | Eater SF

"There’s Tartine on 18th Street, sure, but what Tartine has in bread, its neighbor Fayes across the street has in drinks. That includes San Francisco’s only remaining $1 coffee, but also a spicy chai that is well-worth trying. The shop uses David Rio, if that’s any indication of where else to try." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Very nice coffee shop with cute items. They also have a dvd rental space in the back! What a throwback! I was slightly disappointed that the ube latte I got had minimal to no ube taste. But service was nice otherwise

Casey A

Google
This coffee shop was very cute - I like the overall vibe. I didn’t order a pastry, but they looked very tasty and homemade. The barista with the long blonde hair was not super friendly or welcoming. Very stand-offish. My cappuccino tasted decent, but was scalding hot to the point that it burned my mouth. I think the milk was steamed a little too long.

Lynn C.

Google
This is hands down the best place for cold brew. While I can't speak for their hot drinks as I've yet to have any, it's the only place I'm willing to get ground beans and cold brew happily within the city. I regularly get ground cold brew here so I can make some at home and it comes out smooth with a perfect sumptuous mouth feel every time I make it at home. The only reason Ive yet to try the hot drinks is that every time I swing by it coincidentally is a hot day, and their cold brew hits the spot. Do your self a favor and grab an iced drink here

Molly P.

Google
Went in to see if we could sample the new horchata coffee before purchasing that was being promoted on a sign in front of this business. We were treated so rudely by Chris the barista who had a terrible/nasty attitude and horrible customer service. If he was overwhelmed, he must be very inexperienced because there were 3 people in line (us and two people behind us). The reason why he couldn’t give us a sample was because of the line (which had formed in the last 30 seconds - no one had been waiting). He could have been kind or at least pleasantly told us no, but instead was degrading and pretentious. Although, if a coffee shop is advertising a new coffee, it doesn’t feel unreasonable to want to try a sip of the drink being promoted

Hana

Google
I like their cafe au lait, it’s creamy and much cheaper than other places. I also like that they have a teeny size, sometimes I just don’t feel like having a lot of coffee so that’s convenient. They have cute collection of art, books and they play good music too.

Nanette W.

Google
Their decaf cold brew is off the charts!! I've been on a hunt for iced decaf coffee from a neighborhood cafe in the Mission that is reasonably priced, delicious, and served in a great ambience -- this place tops them all 😁 Excited to come back and be a regular!

Michelly C.

Google
A bit underwhelmed with the coffee here. The chai latte was initially spicy, but quickly evolved into flavored milk. I ordered a couple other specialty drinks and wasn't particularly fond of either. Overall, disappointing given the consistent 5 star reviews.

Morgan H.

Google
Went here everyday I could in SF. They serve the most consistently high quality latte I have ever had the privilege of consuming. It’s so well rounded and warm, even if you go for something basic. I have told everyone who looks in my general direction they have to go to Faye’s Coffee. Everyone who works there is so kind and quick, I would give 10 stars if I could!

Yelp
Delicious oat milk cappuccinos! Great service, awesome ambience and lots of goodies to buy if you're looking for a cute gift.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute coffee shop! It has a nostalgic feel with bunch of DVDs - I'm not sure if they're displays or you could buy them. You can also buy cute stationery items like post cards. They allow credit cards but you'll be charged for a credit card fee if your purchase is under a certain amount - I think it was $5. I think they prefer cash over credit card. This is an aside but it's interesting how different cities have varying flexibility in what type of money customers can use. It seems like SF and NYC have a similar degree of flexibility - they seem to have a good number of businesses that still prefer cash over credit card. On the other hand, I almost never encounter stores preferring cash in Seattle.

Yelp
This review is for their pastries - I had to catch an early flight out of SFO and Fayes was open early enough (7am on a Monday) to provide me with some breakfast pastries before I headed out. I tried their Ube Mango Scone and Ham and Cheese Croissant. Both were excellent and hit the spot for me. The Ube Mango had the right amount of coconut + mango flavor and the texture of the scone was nice and dense. The croissant was perfectly flaky and the ham and cheese provided the savory-ness I was hoping for. The coffee seemed very reasonably priced (even though I didn't order any - maybe next time?), and the staff was friendly.

Yelp
My long term nickname has been Faye, so whenever I go by Faye's I go in, get my black coffee and enjoy the inclusive atmosphere. Faye's is a mission staple, and as a runner it gives me all I need! The staff is kind, the location is prime, I love it and its inclusion!
google avatar

Shikha S.

Yelp
Their Ube latte was a sweet pick me up, and it's a fun gift shop to pass time in - definitely worth visiting in the Mission!
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
You can get coffee that's not too expensive here. It's across the street from Tartine. The staff are direct and efficient. The A-frame sign outside is funny. When I was there, it said, "Wear a mask. Rumor has it coffee tastes better with the vaccine." Too good. During late summer pandemic times, they were allowing one person/party inside at a time. I appreciate that they are taking precautions for safety. When I go back, I will browse the merchandise. It looked like they have cool things for sale, in addition to coffee.

Yelp
Love this spot! An SF institution and cornerstone if the neighborhood and community. Love the art and the coffee!

Shoham A.

Yelp
terrible place I will definitely know where I should not buy my coffee Customer services very bad route people I don't recommend to go there

Yelp
Entrance view at Faye's. My white mocha oatmilk latte was amazing! Love the homey atmosphere of this place and thought it really cool to have dvd's in the back like a mini blockbusters. service was great as well.

Yelp
I've lived next to Fayes almost twenty years, and it's such an amazing spot for drinks, videos, and unique art. I don't drink coffee but I love their tea drinks. I introduced my husband to it and he's now obsessed with their coffee and it's his fave in the city, blowing away all the other fancy coffee SF is known for. Everyone that works there is super friendly and inclusive, and they are such good community advocates for this little slice of the Mission. There are very cute greeting cards as well as good books for gifts, I went in and bought a journal and had a lovely convo with a staff member about an upcoming art show, which they have rotating throughout the year. I kept my dvd player just in case I want to peruse their movies, they have a good selection of new and classics. This gem is more than a coffee and movie joint, it's a real asset to the neighborhood. Thanks Fayes for providing such a cool space!

Isabel R.

Yelp
Great coffee and such kind people. This is my go to stop before walking over to Dolores Park. They make me feel so welcome and are non-judgemental about your coffee preferences. It feels like walking over to a friend's and having them make coffee just how you like it
google avatar

Allison J.

Yelp
So I had to work in the area yesterday and happened upon this wonderful coffee shop. The coffee was probably the best coffee I've ever had in my life. It was a mocha latte and was absolutely delicious. I also got a cranberry scone which was likewise delicious. I cannot wait to go back and try a different pastry. Yummy goodness.

Jocelyn A.

Yelp
Love Fayes!! Great coffee and great location if you're headed to Dolores Park! I great neighborhood spot.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
What a great coffee shop! They are very old school SF and great people. Plus video rental?! A gem in a city with many!
google avatar

Therese S.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop with a great iced vanilla latte! The baristas are all very nice, and they have a lot of cute things to look at around the store while you wait. It's not a sit down coffee shop and is better if you want something quick to pick up on your way elsewhere!
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
This is a cute local spot with yummy drinks and pastries. Baristas are kind and welcoming. I love that they still require everyone to wear a mask- I wish more businesses were.
google avatar

Caitlin S.

Yelp
I bet this coffee shop was such a fun place to hang out pre-COVID. It still maintains it's charm though. Only one person can be inside at a time. They have a lot of cute cards and art and of course video games. I got a vanilla latte and it was delicious with a very understated vanilla flavor. They have alternative milks and a lot of flavor options. The to-go cup was my favorite! Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Pamela B.

Yelp
Coffee with a side of friendly? More like coffee with a side of Snark. I stopped here for a couple of lattes, paying with a credit card and tipping in cash (knowing that servers wouldn't have to claim these tips on taxes.) I was rewarded with a cup emblazoned with a sharpie-written "No tips? No thanks." When I informed the baristas that I had actually tipped in cash, no one apologized. What a shitty way to treat customers
google avatar

Kate L.

Yelp
Faye's was everything I needed on a day when everything was a little off. Thank you for being so patient with my misunderstanding of your one-customer-in-the-store COVID policy as I thoughtlessly browsed while waiting for my latte. I loved the Batista's cat sweater and kind disposition, and my drink was top notch. I look forward to returning with my little girl in the future; Faye's is a wondrous place.
google avatar

Rudy H.

Yelp
Pretty solid for $3.00 huge size coffee. I like their selection of films as well with lots of Criterion Collections and important European Art films. Films by Federico Fellini, Wim Wenders, Chantal Akerman, Akira Kurozawa, Peter Weir, etc .. The place itself is cute and not pretentious although that I would completely understand if hipsters likes to come here too. I'm not a hipster and I like this coffee shop.
google avatar

Abigail S.

Yelp
I've fallen in love with a coffee shop! Faye's is perfect. I discovered it while using my "San Francisco Coffee Passport" and I'm so thankful I did! Friendly staff, affordable prices, great coffee, and the cutest merch/gifts I've ever seen! If you're in town for a weekend and want a quant local stop for a caffeine fix/ gifts for your loved ones this is the place. If you live here and you want a charming, authentic, place to enjoy your cup then this is the place to go. I'll most certainly be back!

Easy E.

Yelp
I usually love the place though I don't visit it everyday. I was in early Easter Sunday and the blonde girl working the counter was not nice to the customer before me and then was rude to me, I can't imagine what the next customers endured. I for sure will not go there if she's working anymore or even at all. It's too bad all the other people that have helped me there were extremely nice and 1 person can totally mess it up for you
google avatar

Arturo N.

Yelp
It's a coffee shop, video store, art gallery, AND they even sell special items/cards and tokens you can give to friends/family in a pinch. Fayes is truly a special space that always gets my latte right. Try to give yourself time to go to the shop so you can see the art at the gallery. If you have a pup, they have treats!

Christine G.

Yelp
I was a major coffee drinker and have recently switched to decaf coffee--yea... Hard to find a decent decaf, but the server at Faye's just made me one of the best--if not the best--iced caramel lattes I have ever had! Yum!

Omar A.

Yelp
wack cappuccino that was way too hot and thin, super uppity man at the register and $.50 charge on cards. nahhhhhhh there's better coffee pretty interesting the owner is trying to argue with me publicly instead of teaching their baristas to steam milk. if the coffee was good, then none of this would really matter to me. good luck out there

Alex J.

Yelp
Pair of baristas were rude. All I wanted was an iced coffee, and all I got was an attitude. I'm a former barista, so I get it. Showing up to work at 5am sucks, but I don't think that warrants abusive behavior to your neighbors.

Ray M.

Yelp
I love Faye's. A progressive, homey coffee shop with good values and great coffee. I love the signs outside and that they're dog friendly and have a neighborhood feel. Love this spot!
google avatar

Chloe L.

Yelp
Not open at 9:45pm tonight as it said on here. Drove all the way out here for nothing.
google avatar

Marissa F.

Yelp
Can't rave about this place enough, from the neighborhood pet contests to the cute foods to the video rental to the solid espresso drinks. We are big fans of their coffee concentrate as well. And super clutch while you're waiting in that ridiculous long line for Tartine.
google avatar

Nat Y.

Yelp
I highly recommend! They sell small tiny coffee of $1 that is brilliant!! Thank you Faye's excited to come again
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
The best part of waking up, is... the barista accosting you at your local coffee shop? Coffee: Excellent Cups: SO cute Service: Um... I've come to Faye's a handful of times and the coffee is always great and have generally had a lovely experience. Not so this morning, when I came with my partner. Due to the pandemic they are allowing one person in at a time. At my turn, I went in to order two lattes. I asked the gentleman barista if it was easier if I waited outside due to the capacity requirement, and he said 'yes.' Seconds later the woman barista is waving someone inside and I look toward the first person in line. (Wait -- is she waving at me?) I'm a bit confused since the gentleman has just said it's best for me to wait outside... The woman begins to very aggressively wave me inside and when I get there she (not joking) scolds me because she "can't have me going outside when she hasn't finished the drinks." Not kidding -- legit scolded. On the walk home, my partner and I laughed about how aggressive she was with me... but honestly though we were able to laugh it off, part of going out for a coffee walk in the morning is for the serene start to my day, so I'm not up for a pre-8am rude 'tude. I get that this pandemic has everyone on high stress and have major respect for those who are working through it, but kindness is contagious both ways.

Yelp
Fayes is the best place in the city. When I lived in SF, I lived right down the street and would stop in 4-5 times a week for a teeny coffee and a pastry. Walking to the BART and seeing the Fayes chalkboard each day was a perfect way to start the morning. Some of my favorite times in the bay area were spent sitting on the bench outside Faye's and chatting with other folks in the neighborhood, or folks just passing through. This is a treasure of a spot.
google avatar

Michelle Z.

Yelp
Great spot for coffee and super friendly staff! Love that it's so close to Dolores Park!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and pastries and they always have a treat for my dog! Love this place so much. Why wait on line for an hour at Tartine when you can go here?!
google avatar

Ayanna E.

Yelp
Since moving to the neighborhood recently Faye's has become my favorite spot. Stop by for an affordable cup of coffee, fun gifts and even explore their movie rentals for $5. I also appreciate their small pastry selection and are never disappointed by the variety of delicious scones.
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
My airbnb host put it best: video shop turned dvd shop turned coffee shop. Unique and cute neighborhood place. Everyone that came in seems to know each other. Got an iced coffee and it was pretty standard. Glad this place is walking distance from my airbnb and is a nice relaxed place if you don't want to wait in line at Tartine.
google avatar

Sharee R.

Yelp
I love this place. They always have the best social commentary on their sign. The workers here are great.
google avatar

Yelp
TL;DR - Super delightful find near Bi-Rite madness and Dolores Park! Look, sometimes you go to Dolores and you just need coffee because you drank a little, smoked a lot... Faye's has been an amazing find! It's cheap and quick. I paid $2 for a small coffee. If you're order is less than $5, there's an additional small charge for using your card. Also, they have tons of great gifts/knick-knacks like cards and pastries. They also have a movie rental program! It's pretty affordable, though I haven't rented anything yet.
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
Asked the barista to make my cappuccino extra hot and he said, "it will come out one temperature." Attitude much? Turns out that temperature was lukewarm! Aw. Hell. No. So unfortunately I was forced to talk to this dude again. He made it again with an attitude but at least it was hot! Updating my review and rating due to the owners response. Now it all makes sense! Dude had that "this is my last shift so fuck you" attitude towards other customers so I guess me asking for my cappuccino to be extra hot was just the last fair trade coffee bean to break this salty barista's back! I may checkout Faye's again when I'm in SF because I must admit once hot my cappuccino was delicious!
google avatar

Katherine M.

Yelp
My favorite hyper local coffee shop in the Mission. Smart, funny folks, who make an excellent vanilla latte
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
Order a coffee and rent a film in one transaction. Perhaps try a decaf if it's the Safdie Brothers.
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
Cool combo of a coffee shop and a video game rental store. The barista was friendly and got my espresso shot out so quick it was like he whipped it out as soon as I placed the order. Espresso was fresh and delicious - not bitter at all. They had a line building up when I came by and since it's not your typical coffee house, I think this indicates the quality and service you can expect to receive here.

Lydia W.

Yelp
Justin and Mike have an awesome team. Extraordinary coffee, good service and most importantly dog friendly!
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
I LOVE FAYE'S! Absolutely one of the best coffee places in SF. I look forward to every weekend to make it out here and treat myself to an iced latte or iced coffee. Their iced coffee is PERFECT --- not burnt, acidity or bitterness lingering (and their prices are SO affordable). Their lattes are yummy, and never disappoint~ They also sell cute trinkets, cards, and rent videos! Very enjoyable experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Upon entering this video store, I received no acknowledgement from the staff, which was mainly a guy sitting behind the counter, doing his best impression of being too cool for school. I went up and asked about signing up. He assisted me with absolutely zero expression on his face, but was polite. Given the unique organization scheme, I asked for assistance finding the three titles I wanted to rent. He assisted me grudgingly, seeming to be annoyed at being forced to leave the counter. He rang up my movies, took my money, and I was on my way... Later that night, I excitedly sat down to watch my movie marathon. The first one was awesome, so was the second. About halfway through the third, the dvd started freezing, and try as I might, I could not unfreeze it. I managed to turn off the movie, then start it a little while later in the movie...which left me missing about 20 minutes of some of the most important bits of the plot. Well, that sucks, but it's not the end of the world. I'll just see if I can find out what happened by reading the wikipedia page for the movie. It turns out the sucky part happened the next day when I returned the movie. I let the counter guy (same one as yesterday) know that the movie froze in the middle, so was probably damaged, and that it wasn't my player's fault, because the other movies had worked just fine (and I've never had a problem before or since with it!). He said, "Okay, cool, thanks for letting me know." I waited a moment, perplexed, wondering if he'd somehow forgotten to offer to refund my money for that rental which I didn't really get to enjoy. He never made that offer. In retrospect, I should've made it clear that I wanted my money back...but he'd already moved onto a conversation with someone he knew in the store. So I just left, feeling awkward and annoyed. I haven't been back since, and the next time I had the urge to rent a video, I went to Lost Weekend instead. It kind of sucks that I feel this animosity towards Faye's, but customer service makes or breaks an experience for me. If the counter guy had just refunded my money, or at least offered me another rental free for my troubles, I would've continued to give them my business, because that would've been an ethical business practice. But to take my money, give me a substandard, defective product, and then not try to make that right? Yeah, ain't got no time for that...!
google avatar

Bailey Z.

Yelp
In my prior travels, I've visited coffee shops that have amalgamated with barber shops, whiskey bars, and even a soap shop, but this has been my first coffee shop/video rental combination. Video rental specials run through the weekdays, which include $2 Mondays and 2-for-1 Wednesdays. In an age where Netflix, Hulu, and Redbox dominates the movie rental business, seeing a place like Faye's in the neighborhood makes me smile. I love seeing tangible, physical copies of DVDs, similar to opening a hardcover book versus reading a novel off a Kindle. If you have a tough time deciding on a title like I do, new releases are reviewed by the staff to help with the selection process. On to the coffee. I love that they offer an 8 oz. drip coffee for $1. Sometimes, you only want a small serving size. If you're looking for single origin beans, look elsewhere. Faye's coffee blend is a dark roast for a bigger, robust flavor. They also offer a cold brew as well as cold brew concentrate that comes in a mason jar to go. No need to stuff another stamp card in your wallet that's already busting at the seams. Use the shop's old school library-style card catalog to store your loyalty card for safe keeping. The rest of the shop is filled with cool knick-knack art pieces and ceramics.

Jose L.

Yelp
What a great place to get coffee at a great price. The staff is amazing and friendly. They will treat you right! Also, they have a nice video library in the back. Check it out!

Julie Z.

Yelp
To have a coffee first thing of your day and have a barista and staff so mean .... just 100% will ruin your day!!!! Hope you'll not have a bad day when you get your coffee here.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Very reasonable coffee prices meet nice staff and even better it's right next-door to Tartine so you can give them your business and not spend your money in an overpriced coffee shop!
google avatar

Catherine H.

Yelp
$1 coffee for a teeny tiny cup that's perfect for my consumption levels rocks my imaginary socks. Have not seen this elsewhere in SF and I really like coffee shops. And there's a sunny window (weather dependent of course) in which to perch on a stool and be glanced at by the passersby on their way to Dolores Park. Well at least it makes me feel like a local when I do this. ALSO: Cute gifts and design items. There's a video shop in back too! But in two visits I haven't even gotten to perusing it with all the entertainment in the front of the shop.
