Ultimate Destinations Around Philly for Crispy, Crunchy Fried Chicken

"The Tel Aviv fried chicken sandwich at Federal Donuts is something only Philly’s Mike Solomonov could pull off — a twice-fried chicken breast with Za’atar seasoning, schug tehina, Israeli pickles, and a slice of heirloom tomato on a potato roll. Though it’s not always on the menu, chicken tenders and donuts are, so you’ll never go hungry when stopping by this beloved local chain" - Ernest Owens

"Federal Donuts, which sells wacky-flavored handmade doughnuts, coffee, and Korean-style twice-fried chicken, is just one example of how chefs in the City of Brotherly Love are pursuing their culinary obsessions. The original Center City shop has been joined bybranches around town (including one at the baseball stadium) as well as a satellite shop in Miami: Theowners' whimsicalimpulse to pick upa doughnut machine on Craigslist in 2011 now seems less crazy and more like the firststeps of delicious empire-building."

Donuts here are freshly made. Definitely try their chicken and donut combo it is to die for. Order the traditional flavors but the specials are great as well as you can mix and match. The donut mix is just right as the textures are soft on the inside and a lil hard on the out. Don't expect a long wait here. Just order and to. My friends and I loved our donuts and will definitely be back!

They have a few locations, and we picked the one that is in more of a residential area than a busy center of the city. There was no line when we arrived shortly after 11am. But, it was still busy, it can get crowded very quickly with a very small interior. They have five counter seats, and that is about it. While we were there, most of them were there to purchase the food to go, so the seats were not in high demand. Even though this is mainly a donut shop, they also offer enticing fried chicken. We ordered their very popular Fried Chicken Sandwich, available from 11am. It was smaller than I thought it would be, but I always take quality over quantity. It was juicy, tasty, with a nice little kick to it. We really enjoyed it! We couldn’t just order chicken from a donuts shop, so we got a couple of donuts from their Hot Donuts selections. We chose Cookies & Cream and Strawberry Lavender. We both liked the strawberry one better, since it had better, stronger flavor. Cookies & Cream was good but didn't have much flavor. Definitely a place to visit if you are visiting Philly!

This was my first time enjoying Federal Donuts (besides the one at Citizens Bank Park). I ordered 1/2 dozen hot & fresh. They were perfect. I ordered 2 of each flavor. The only one I didn't get to try was the cinnamon sugar. The cookies and cream was great. The strawberry lavender was to die for. On top of that, the coffee was even good. I will certainly be going back to try some more flavors and I'd love to try the chicken one day. This place is a MUST for any foodie in the area.

Heard this was the Philly place for donuts. It didn't disappoint. The basic glazed donuts was top notch. The feel of it being a hole in the wall place added to the experience. Only drawback was there was about a 10 minute wait with only a few customers. The guy seemed to be working alone and was very nice. Go try this place!

Very good with somebamazing flavors that take you back to Childhood and then backbto an adult. The big banana pudding donut made me feel like I was 10 years old again and then the Cafe coffee donut brought me back to my love of coffee.

I heard place from a TV show and thought I'd check it out. Small place not a lot of room in it. Donuts are made to order so they are fresh. My girlfriend and I discussed which specialty donut we wanted for a few minutes and then went to order and the cashier said they were out of that donut so I tried to order a different specialty donut and she said they were all out of specialty donuts. She had to hear us debate on which one we wanted to try and could have told us they were sold out. Let's talk about the regular donuts. They had cinnamon sugar, strawberry lavender, and cookies and cream. They were pretty good. Not amazing and a must have but good. I'd the service was better I'd give another half star.
