I was expecting overhype and nostalgia bait, but was pleasantly surprised that I was proven wrong. This branch is revamped, well-ventilated, and entirely modern without the usual sticky tables or old plasticky chairs at such shophouse eateries.
There were plenty of parallel lots and even a gated car park nearby. Service was swift and uneventful, unlike many of the other reviews that I have read about the abysmal service experience, prior to visiting. The fried wanton arrived in under two minutes, and the rest of our mains and drinks followed within five, fresh and warmly prepared.
Flavors are subtle and traditional. Portions are likely the main cause of unhappiness for those who feedback about price. If you have a normal-sized mouth, expect to finish a small bowl in 3–4 bites; if you are me, maybe two. But the firmer, al dente noodles make up for it, keeping things satisfyingly firm and filling despite the size.
The wanton and dumplings would bring you back to a time when bowls of noodles were cheaper, McDonald’s fillet-o-fish was just $2 and where Singapore was a third of its current population.
All in all, a solid, old-school breakfast choice for me, just that I will order the big bowl next time or embrace the art of dieting.
