Supper Series: 5 Wanton Mee Stalls In Singapore That Open Till Late

"Most will remember this stall as one of two in the battle of wanton mee along Joo Chiat Road. Here, the unassuming bowl of wanton mee hides treasures such as fried wantons and tender slices of char siu under the plain-looking noodles. Best doused with the red chilli sauce served with the dish." - Meryl Koh

I was expecting overhype and nostalgia bait, but was pleasantly surprised that I was proven wrong. This branch is revamped, well-ventilated, and entirely modern without the usual sticky tables or old plasticky chairs at such shophouse eateries. There were plenty of parallel lots and even a gated car park nearby. Service was swift and uneventful, unlike many of the other reviews that I have read about the abysmal service experience, prior to visiting. The fried wanton arrived in under two minutes, and the rest of our mains and drinks followed within five, fresh and warmly prepared. Flavors are subtle and traditional. Portions are likely the main cause of unhappiness for those who feedback about price. If you have a normal-sized mouth, expect to finish a small bowl in 3–4 bites; if you are me, maybe two. But the firmer, al dente noodles make up for it, keeping things satisfyingly firm and filling despite the size. The wanton and dumplings would bring you back to a time when bowls of noodles were cheaper, McDonald’s fillet-o-fish was just $2 and where Singapore was a third of its current population. All in all, a solid, old-school breakfast choice for me, just that I will order the big bowl next time or embrace the art of dieting.

Prefer the standalone coffeeshop style outlet before they shift and turn the concept to a restaurant cafe bar wanton mee concept, prices definitely have increase and portion has decrease. Not as nice as before, it has kind of lost its original taste. The soup also weren't as tasty as before especially the dumpling soup which was kind of lukewarm.

Average food but it makes up for it with the efficient and friendly service. Came by to have a quick lunch. The restaurant was rather empty and the staff quickly took our order and a seat was assigned to us. The interesting thing is that there are 2 menus. One with pricing and the other one with pictures of the dishes and no pricing. I think it would greatly help customers if the menu with the pictures of the dishes does have pricing so that customers will make a more informed choice. Staff was very friendly and a conversation starter. Food was served within minutes. The noodles and wanton reminds me of the quality Eng wanton noodles but the portion was slightly bigger and the wanton is better with more ingredients. The slices of bbq meat were thin and I could not really taste the bbq flavor. I liked the soup though, it did have a slightly peppery taste. The wanton soup itself did have a substantial number of wantons and I do think it’s pretty worth the price paid. The ampang Yong tau foo was quite fresh and sauce was rather tasty. The drinks were served in a very small cup which looked big and filled to the brim with ice. It is probably more worth to just order a canned drink. I do think the food generally was rather salty/msg laden as I had to go hunt for water after the meal. The service was very good, and I was delighted to see that they were very kind to families with children, and gave the kids a balloon. I would revisit just because of the great service.

Visited this legendary wanton mee stall over the weekend and was greatly disappointed. The shop had actually moved from its original location, so I had to detour a bit to find the shop. It’s still ok, not too far off Joo Chiat Rd. The shop had been renovated and came with air conditioning, so I knew prices won’t come cheap. A big bowl here is at $8.50 (and just means more noodles to my great horror). Not sure if it’s because they let customers add their own chili sauce but it really affected the taste of the noodles. As I had a large serving, the noodles were really just starchy, and pretty bland. Not sure if they had changed the recipe but it wasn’t quite rhetorical taste I remembered they used to have. Also the wanton is really small now, not different from other stalls. On a good note, staff here is quite on the ball and polite, the beverage was actually quite good. Maybe just pop in for a drink next time? 😂😂

Saw the dumplings pictures on the menu, 1 look more while the other look lesser. So i asked the service staff if they are the same. Joel's replied they are the same but he made me sounded stupid. Ordered 1 small size wanton and 1 dumpling soup. Char Siew, vegetables n wanton were fresh. Noodles tasted flat and had the "ghee" . Dumplings were big and fresh, 4pcs in a bowl. I took 2 bites to finish 1 dumplings.

Food is nice but overpriced. Ordered 2 bowls of wanton noodles with 1 bowl dumpling soup. Dumpling soup had 4 dumplings worth $8. 2 mouthfuls and 1 is gone. That aside, I went at 1am and it was actually full house! I'd rate it 4 stars if they'd lower their pricing. For 2 pax, our meal with GST came up to nearly $30. Not worth it. Plus it's not even air conditioned. Decor was nice though.

Paid $10.19 for this, price is a little insane but the chicken cutlet is crispy, well-seasoned and juicy. Noodles are nice and old-school but I really disliked the vegetable taste. Wouldve been a 4 if not for the steep price tag.

Used to be really good and now they increased the price, it's actually quite bad. The saving grace was the noodles, old school style. Char Siew was shocking, like doggy leftovers. Tasteless and dry. Dumpling is decent. Note to self not to eat here anymore. Understand they have to increase price cos whole area is gentrified, but quality must be kept up
