The Best Mexican Food in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This locally owned multi-location taqueria is known as much for its community outreach as its small-batch, made-from-scratch Mexican cuisine and hand-squeezed key lime margaritas. Felipe’s, consistently named a top Mexican eatery in town, pays homage to traditional nachos and burritos, while also offering lighter options like the vegan veggie bowl. The make it your way option lets diners swap out proteins, sauces, and tortillas, as they please." - Beth D’Addono

These New Orleans Restaurants Are Open on Mardi Gras Day | Eater New Orleans

"Fuel up at the French Quarter location of Felipe’s with signature tacos, burritos, and potent margaritas. Order from the satellite bar for margaritas to go or take a break from the madness and dine in. Try a caramelized pork al pastor taco, bright with notes of pineapple and gaujillo chile, also available in a bowl." - Beth D’Addono

The Best Cheap and Easy Restaurants in the French Quarter | Eater New Orleans

"This causal cantina may not win any awards for traditional Mexican food but a piled plate of Felipe’s nachos sure fills the belly. Tables available or pull up a stool at the bar. Note: those suddenly finding themselves in need of umbrella drinks should head upstairs to the perennially cool and dimly lit Tiki Tolteca." - Allison Alsup

NOLA Mexican Restaurant Felipe’s Fires Multiple Employees Following ICE Audit - Eater New Orleans

"Felipe’s Taqueria, arguably New Orleans’ best Mexican food chain, has reportedly fired multiple employees across its restaurants who couldn’t provide proper legal documentation following a federal immigration investigation. After the investigations arm of ICE, Homeland Security Investigations, conducted an audit of employee files and flagged a number as potentially fraudulent, the chain allegedly gave the employees an opportunity to provide appropriate documentation, firing those unable to do so. Additionally, The Advocate reported on a text message sent out via social media alleging that Felipe’s waited until last Wednesday to alert those staffers flagged, because they thought doing so before Mardi Gras “would leave them short-handed.” The message claims the company fired 10 people and hired a “whole new batch.” In response, a restaurant spokesperson countered that some employees resigned and others later stopped reporting to work after being given five days. With locations in the French Quarter, Uptown, and Mid City, the fast-casual Felipe’s has become a popular spot for margaritas and affordable, customizable cantina food. It was co-founded by a man from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, who opened his first Felipe’s in Cambridge, Massachusetts, following up with the Uptown New Orleans location in 2006." - Clair Lorell

Google
Best chimichanga I’ve had in a long time! We came with 6 people and all of us were 100% satisfied and pleased with our food. Everything was delicious and perfectly fresh. I can’t wait to go back.

H2 T2

Google
The food is ready fast. Mildly warm so could have been out a while so not fresh. The burrito is a good size. The loaded fries were just okay but small. Very limited drink options like 4 or 5 not even Hispanic drink like horchata just regular soda. The meat had no flavor. If I wasn't starving from the airport and desperate for food I could easily recognize around here I wouldn't have gone. Now I'll never return.

Google
We love stopping here for lunch after the aquarium! Easy walk since we park in canal place garage. My kids love the children's quesadillas and the burritos are excellent. Our food is always fresh and delicious. This is a great location and the staff is incredibly friendly each time we go. A must stop if you're in the area. Will definitely be back! Thanks again!

Google

They had bar as well on the side We came for brunch so not that busy It was prime location and reasonable food with good quality

Google
This place is an absolute joke, when you order intryed to ask for carne asada fries and the dude immediately started making tacos and when I correct him to tell I wanted fries 2 of them looked at me stupid like they didn't know what I was asking until one employee told me they are out of fries? You guys have queso fries on your menu but your out of them so I said screw it ask said I'll just take the tacos the only thing they put on it was meat (which was dry and sitting there) and wanted to charge extra for the cheese and guac that I put on there. 2 tacos(street tacos that would normally cost 1.50 to 2 dollars 1 burrito and 2 drinks cost 25 bucks absolutely outrageous do not come here.

Google
This place is amazing! Great food and friendly service. I had the chicken chimi and it was a lot of food for the price. My wife got Felipe's Special which is chips with guacamole, queso, and salsa. Everything was flavorful and fresh. After all the classic New Orleans foods around town and were craving some Mexican food. I wasn't sure if they even had Mexican food around here, but I was super impressed. Felipe's does not disappoint.

Google
The reviews make it seem like a sit down restaurant but it’s not. You order at the counter then seat yourself. The chimichanga I had was delicious and I’m very happy with the portion size you get for the price 😋 very filling.

Google
Felipe’s is a well known local secret in the French Quarter. A lively and fun atmosphere and super casual. The food is served buffet style and they can quickly produce almost any Mexican dish you can imagine. The service is always great and the food is very good, simple Mexican.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant located on the edge of the French quarter & decent meals. Near everything and extremely walkable. The service from the bar is always great.

Yelp
Similar concept as chipotle but not as much salt (possibly not as much flavor). I enjoyed the lightness and freshness of my bowl, and would return in the future. GLOWS: -The menu options are expansive. There is something for everyone -I didnt try the dessert, but they have dessert options and many frozen margarita drinks. -The restaurant has a good amount of seats, which made dining in on a whim a breeze. GROWS: -The bowls are on the smaller side when dining in. I didn't feel my bowl was packed like it could have been, especially the protein

Yelp
Came here on taco Tuesday so the tacos were really cheap. Ordered queso and chips which was good (nothing fancy), got a side of rice which was a bit bland, some of the meat in the tacos was a bit dry, shrimp was decent, drinks were strong! Can't complain since it was so cheap.
google avatar

Bailey M.

Yelp
Quick Mexican food option, nice seating area. Fairly casual. Very reasonably priced, great options. I got a small chips and queso. The queso tasted like a beer white cheese to me. I enjoyed it! Then I did two make your own tacos. I like that they include guacamole. Both the Al pastor and chicken had a nice flavor/good quality. My only negative was there was a bone piece (or something hard) in my chicken taco.

Sophia M.

Yelp
Horrible "Mexican" food. Lots of workers standing around. The restaurant its self is not inviting on the inside. Feels gloomy. I wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
The best tacos! It's located right in the heart of the French Quarter and was a welcome sight when my friends and I had just landed in New Orleans and started exploring but needed some food and drinks to get us going. We serendipitously arrived at Happy Hour so there were food and drink deals but the prices were great overall anyway. I had an al pastor taco and a chicken tinga taco. The al pastor was my favorite version of an al pastor taco that I've tried anywhere. It was very cinnamon-forward which I've never seen before but it was delicious. The chicken tinga was just the right amount of spice and the bartender recommended it as her favorite. This is a fast casual restaurant where you can order at the counter from a variety of options or get full service at the bar. I think I could've eaten like 10 more tacos if I wasn't saving room as we taste our way though New Orleans. Looks like they have locations in Louisiana and Florida, but here's hoping they open a location in Indiana where I'm from.

Yelp
I really liked this quick counter service Mexican restaurant. It is a build your meal with burritos. I really liked the ground beef filling. The food, the service and the value are really great.
google avatar

Gina A.

Yelp
Food was fresh and delicious. Portions are large. Quick, easy and reasonably priced. Hits the spot when you are not looking for anything too expensive or heavy to eat. Perfect. Eat here. You can select and build your own meal. All included in price.

Yelp
I do not recommend the food is nothing special and ordering is a pain my margarita was disgusting the staff was nice and prices low but unfortunately this place is a NO

Yelp
Had no reason not to love this place! We dropped in on Fat Tuesday of Mardi Gras and found a short line and places to sit! The turnover was helpful for this. I had a super delicious quesadilla that was made to order and some horchata. Both were high quality and full of flavor. Service wise, we moved through the line quickly, and a kind woman took our plates when we were done eating. Overall, the experience was awesome and we would go back if we needed a quick bite.

Yelp
Visiting New Orleans, LA for work & tried this place one evening. The chickens tacos, guacamole, chips, beans & rice, & especially the salsa was delectable. Try it!
google avatar

Corey K.

Yelp
Oh my! Hole in the wall place that is very nice inside. It's kind of like chipotle, except far better (IMO). I messed up the order using their kiosk (I didn't see the order here sign -I know, but I was ) talked to the manager and he fixed it for me. Al Pastor was excellent, spicy chicken tings was spicy, tortillas were tasty and we got them at happy hour so very inexpensive. Tacos were $2 each and well worth it. They are small so order accordingly.
google avatar

Yelp
Yeah, this was a solid find on my last few days in New Orleans. Was able to order ahead and walk over from my hotel in the French quarter and pick up some rice bowls and tacos for my family. I was really happy with the quality and service. The food was priced well and the staff were friendly. I would 100% come here again and can't wait to eat here once more!

Yelp
The authentic Chipotle equivalent!! You order at a serving line where your food is assembled in front of you. They prep everything in small batches so it's fresh and flavorful. Their carnitas is one of the best i've had, as they actually grill it up on a flattop after slow roasting. Reasonable prices, family friendly, and there is a nice bar inside too!! I live nearby and eat here weekly. Very good salsas and pickled veggies you can top your food with. Oh, and guacamole is included as a topping option at no extra charge!!

N K.

Yelp
Orders are taken at the counter, food cooked when you order, so everything is fresh. An order of large chips is 2ct lunch size filled bags with 2ct 4oz salsa. And the salsa is excellent, along with good chips! I ordered the chimichanga and this place is set to pick your meat, rice & beans, cheese, toppings and salsa. Everything is fresh, nothing frozen and made from scratch. Seating is booths and tables with bar setting. And the drinks have a good kick and taste. The house margarita has a good mix of flavor and tequila

Yelp
On the last evening of my most recent visit to New Orleans, we had a late dinner at Felipe's. The hostess quickly gave us directions on the "cafeteria" style ordering/service that needed completed because they do not have table side service. We had no issue with this, especially since we could see the ingredients we chose four dishes, as well as watch our items be prepared and plated. The 2nd pleasant experience I had was the gentleman who prepared my burrito bowl. He quickly and expertly explained the various protein and veggie options for bowl, all the while preparing a delicious looking entree for me. My wife had the fish tacos, which our friend highly recommended. She loves jalapeños, and these didn't disappoint as she said they were fresh and added a nice flavor to the tacos. She enjoyed the tacos and said the dish was filling. My burrito bowl was simply amazing! I had the pulled pork and marinated chicken, with shredded cheese, quacamole, black beans, olives, cilantro and corn. This bowl was so filling that I had leftovers, which I enjoyed the next day for lunch! To drink, we had a soft drink and the hibiscus "lemonade" which was beyond tasty! .... Yes! I "sampled" her hibiscus drink liberally during the meal! I will definitely order this the next time we come for a meal. We arrived a bit before closing, therefore there was not a crowd. However, I look forward to returning on my next visit to enjoy margaritas and daiquiris during happy hour. I wish I remembered the names of the guys who prepared our food because they were so efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. Even though the restaurant was near closing when we arrived, our food was fresh, we were never rushed nor made to feel like we were holding them up. All of the above adds up to my positive review and recommendation. I hope you eat here on your next visit to New Orleans.

Yelp
The best margaritas in the French quarter! Highly Recommend the spicy margarita! Get the Felipe's special for fresh chips, guac, cheese and salsa. All the tacos are incredible and the bar service is always spot on! Super consistent drinks, hot and flavorful food, great bar, and a great place to cool off on a hot day if you're in the quarter! This is one of my favorites in the French Quarter! Just Go!

Barbara G.

Yelp
This place is great! The food that we ordered was absolutely delicious. The service was fast and friendly. My only complaint (if you can call it that) was on the overhead menu there was a red star next to a few food items. I asked what that meant: spicy? I never got an answer.
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
Great service, and easily best happy hour in NOLA. Sangria was amazing and margaritas delish

Mandi J.

Yelp
Good quick service place! Kid friendly and loved that everything was customizable. No upcharge for guac or queso in your items. Food was a good sized portion. Guac was delicious. Queso was a little different, tasted like maybe it had beer in it? Still delicious. My only complaint was that they didn't have napkins out and available and several customers asked me for info about the restaurant while I was running around getting drinks, silverware, napkins, food, etc. I did like that you could order at a kiosk which was nice for customizing your food.

Matthew M.

Yelp
Queso fries but where is the queso then when I asked for more cuz she was being stingy with it she said that would be extra but there is no queso bruh lol then I wanted jalapeños she then gave me 4 jalapenos for 50 cents extra not worth it at all and will only be getting drinks from here from now on and the fries were undercooked complete waste of my money and lunch break

Joseph B.

Yelp
Service was ok. Proteins were very cold and appeared to be old. They advertised $2.50 happy hour, charged us $8.00. Then, they allowed a homeless woman to come in and scream and spit on an older woman in the booth next to us. Her son got up and asked her nicely to stop. Hr asked her several times nicely and this went on for about 5 minutes as the bartender looked on and kind of just laughed. The very weak manager came by and did nothing to help the situation and then bitched at the customer for defending his mom and grandmother after they were spit on. I felt horrible for the older woman sitting next to us. So, be warned about the bait and switch and the non security at this establishment.
google avatar

Lakeisha W.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite downtown lunch spots! The service is the service! It's nothing spectacular; however, they will get your order right! The queso is by far one of my favorite items, of course the margaritas too!
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
The food is amazing ! It's authentic Mexican food. I'm from California and I'm Mexican and I was incredibly impressed.
google avatar

Yelp
Rainy day trek to the aquarium. Wanted to find a place place close, inexpensive, comfortable and not a long wait. Could not have picked better! In spite of its steam table setup the food was delicious, the people were pleasant. Just what we were looking for.
google avatar

Yelp
My friends and I came here the other night before the Drake concert and we were not disappointed! The staff were friendly, food was very fresh and delicious and quick to get. The atmosphere is very cute and perfect for a girl's night or a quick bite to eat!

Yelp
"Can somebody say, "YES!" Second day of vaca in NOLA (New Orleans). -For starters, Clean restaurant. -Friendly staff. - fast service. -Authentic food that taste very good. (Can someone say flavorful). -prices are the same like in most places. -Have the munchies, the best place to go.
google avatar

Yelp
Need to get a better system. The Chipotle system doesn't work with their menu. Food might have been better if I had time to discuss with them what I wanted. Also need to learn how to make street tacos. I was disappointed.
google avatar

Jafet C.

Yelp
I was here many in 2009 and 2012 ELCA Youth Gatherings.... They still are the best Mexican restaurant in town
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
The food was good as well as the counter service. The atmosphere was different than what I was expecting. I was looking for a sit down style restaurant where the server comes to you and takes the order. Felipe's isn't that type of restaurant. Upon walking in, you go to the counter and order, pay and carry your food to your table. They do have a bar but you have to order your drinks at the bar, no server takes the order. Overall, the food was decent and I'd go there again.
google avatar

Jainy L.

Yelp
Clean restaurant and casual atmosphere. Prices reasonable and food was fresh. Friendly service. Decent food and prices to feed your belly.

Yelp
For a little Tex-mex style restaurant, this food was so fire. My hubs and I ordered Uber Eats tonight and the speed was impeccable. My order was predicted to arrive about 19 minutes later than it actually did which is always nice. The driver even called right after picking up the food to let me know he was on the way (thanks Michael!) Holy taco salad... we got two different ones and you can basically fix them up with anything you like, similar to chipotle but better, I dare say. Will mention it didn't have much lettuce so not as healthy as you might try to be. You can do it with or without the taco bowl-I obviously got the bowl and it was delicious. The beef tacos were yummy and chocked full of meat-no silly fillers. The beef/chicken plate was super hearty with tons of food-nice southern portions! The quesadilla was a bit soft but super cheesy and so flavorful-I thoroughly enjoyed it. We also tried the hips with both queso and guacamole-super fresh and tasty. Highly recommend for. Casual spot or great takeout!!

Daniel W.

Yelp
Food is great here but the service is bad. I feel like the employees wanna attack me anytime I ask for something in the food I'm ordering. It's almost like I have to convince them to wanna work.
google avatar

Jacquelyn W.

Yelp
Californian here. After a week of wonderful NOLA food we needed a bit of familiarity. Fantastic find in Felipe's for both foot and service. I can tell it's homemade, the guacamole is on point, meats are flavorful and not fatty. My only dissatisfaction was the queso, American cheese queso is an abomination. Loved my margarita! Keep up the great work and we look forward to visiting when we are in town again.

Gladys M.

Yelp
We order food yesterday and it was good to my liking. The food did get here fast but it was cold, had a funny smell, and no extra salsa was but in the order. I know I did order extra salsa on the side but usually when I order in other Mexican places I did enough salsa. Enough about the salsa but the food i personally did like it at all I order 3 tacos al pastor, it had a smell like something had gone bad on the tacos I don't know if it was the meat or salsa. The onion and cilantro same old too not crush on onions. I had a bite of the husband super burrito and it also had a smell and I taste I didn't like again. My girls things were ok I guess but not impressed either dry meat and everything was cold I don't think I will order from this place again because I am a foodie and when something is good I will let you guys know.
google avatar

Kirsten J.

Yelp
Nice Taqueria at the beginning of the French Quarter in Nola. The place was buzzing with customers when we walked in. You order at the counter and find a table. We got a pitcher of Frozen Margarita and Taco Salad. The prices are very reasonable for this area. $20 for a pitcher margarita, $10.95 for a large taco salad. A nice place to stop by if you want to grab a quick bite to eat.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Whitest tacos I've had. Steak was dry and the Al pastor was mad oily. Queso wasn't good either. We didn't even eat half. The bartender was super cool tho and the drinks were decent.

Julie B.

Yelp
I understand the pros and cons of living in the French Quarter. I'm good with the people and the noise. I'm not okay with block parties on the worst possible days...French Quarter Fest and Cinco de Mayo. Last night someone was murdered at 8:30 pm at Bienville and Decatur. Shots were fired and people ran and plenty of people stayed. This was your party along with other businesses. What is the possible benefit of this activity when you can't ensure the safety of your guests and your neighbors?

Yelp
My daughter and I had been planning a trip to New Orleans for 15 years. Finally went March 18 of 2019. Yep, 2 days after arriving my city was pretty much shut down tight due to COVID. I was so upset cause I had not had a chance to really show her around my hometown. On the 4th day we had driven all around town, we're in the quarter, it was dinner time and we were so hungry. Had not had lunch and a very slight breakfast. Not much open and we came across Felipe's and immediately pulled over. We figured we love Mexican so why not. Went in and staff was super friendly. We got a few things and went in car to eat. It was so delicious we decided to go back in and got more. We also felt good supporting a local business. I'm about 4 years late writing this, but we forgot our info bag in the hotel and I finally found the name so wanted to share how great they were. Will be back In December so really looking forward to hitting them up again! Thanks staff!

emma c.

Yelp
Mr B is amazing he slays and I loved my quesadilla too and free salsa bar LFG awesome
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
It was good in a pinch. My friend and I were pretty hungry after walking around New Orleans all day and wanted some Mexican food. Other local places were closed. Felipe's is counter service, similar to Chipotle and you've got to keep yourself moving through line otherwise you'll get yelled at. I got a taco salad which was alright. It'll satisfy your late night cravings.
google avatar

Della L.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and wonderful food and service! We had build your own burritos, quesadillas, burritos bowl... oh so good! We couldn't stop bragging about the flavors in the fabulous food!
google avatar

Courtnie L.

Yelp
If you just want to stop in for a quick marg and taco...this is a good place. The sangria margaritas very strong. We went for happy hour so they were only $5. The tacos were a $1...as small as they were, I could see why! Even though they were small they were very good. The Baja shrimp tacos definitely had some spice to it. They were seasoned well. We sat at the bar and was assisted quickly.
google avatar

Anastasia B.

Yelp
We came here on our last day visiting NOLA, and absolutely regretted not coming sooner. We specifically came for the 2$ taco deal on Tuesday. I tried the shrimp, steak, and chicken. The shrimp was fried and a miss in my opinion - but the steak and especially the chicken where the standouts. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. We also got the trio of salsa, cheese, and guacamole. If I were to do it again I would stick to the guacamole alone. The salsa was a little bit disappointing and bland and the queso was extremely salty. The bar has some really tasty margaritas - 5$ happy hour. Great place for a quick bite!

Tom C.

Yelp
Best bang for the buck in the FQ. Tex-mex food with well cooked proteins and sides. Get the nachos. It can feed 2!
google avatar

Amber N.

Yelp
Flautas: They are missing something. Maybe not rolled correctly or filled properly but they just tasted like crispy shells. I couldn't taste the meat in the inside. Churros: The stars are for the churros. They are pretty long and came in aluminum so they stayed hot while I suffered through eating the flautas just to get to the delicious churros.
google avatar

Dilyara S.

Yelp
I love coming back to this place. Very affordable for the Quarter. Not very authentic food, but decent. Good drinks and friendly staff. They also have another branch in uptown. Both locations are worth checking out.

Sam H.

Yelp
I get the burrito and that shit hits the same everytime! The atmosphere is very cute and great for dates with an SO. The service is always very helpful and quick to answer any questions you may have. Would highly recommend to anybody!

Yelp
This place is set up kinda like a Qdoba or chipotle - assembly line process. The staff seemed super slow last night & also the first work had a cigarette behind his ear- so disgusting and hoping that doesn't get anywhere near the food. Anyways- we went here for tacos. Tacos pretty good and priced comparable for the area. Nothing too exciting to want to come back for. We also got the chips with guacamole, queso, and salsa. The queso was ok but something weird about the flavor. The guacamole was the best part. Also con of small chips portion but was suitable for 2 of us but had remaining dips without chips. Overall, not an awful restaurant but nothing too crazy to want to come back for.
