Look, we just left Felix's BBQ extremely happy customers & we ordered so much food I'm confident to tell you it was all super good & there are plenty of options, so just go right now & enjoy excellent service, a welcoming great atmosphere, incredible live music on Friday (this guy was like a mix of Odetta & Mick Hucknell from Simply Red, a real talent!!) and of course, super bomb bbq & soul food. If you don't like to read, don't bother with the rest, just click for directions & bring your hungriest self because you'll want to have room for the fresh apple pie & real peach cobbler - they're better a la mode!!
Ask for Beverly, she's a wonderful woman & the server you always want when you're out to eat- friendly, fun, efficient, quick with the sauces & refills, etc. She's a real beauty who made our visit extra enjoyable!
If you've made it this far I'll keep going & get into the details. First Beverly dropped off a basket heaping, warm, melt in your mouth corn bread that absorbed the butter on contact. As soon as that basket hit our table, I knew the food would be great, & was not disappointed!
We started with a bowl of gumbo & the butter-fly fried shrimp plate with steamed vegetables a sweet potato fries. The gumbo was zesty & tasty over a generous portion of perfectly cooked fluffy white rice. The gumbo is a total winner- topped with two big shrimp & filled with large chunks of sausage it zings & zangs in all the ways you want a gumbo to zip!!
The shrimp plate was piled with 18 perfectly cooked big shrimp & seasoned to perfection. We asked for tartar sauce which was homemade and a perfect compliment. The vegetables were steamed but still firm, not hard, mushy or over cooked & the sweet potato fries we also cooked perfectly - hot, crispy & chewy in all the right ways.
Our boys got two plates of chicken & waffles & we shared a Cobb salad & a plate of St. Louis ribs with more vegetables & Mac & cheese.
It was all fantastic with the chicken & waffles being the real standout on this second round! Big, hot, fluffy & golden brown - clearly a homemade mix that one seven year old hurt himself finishing because he said he couldn't stop eating them. Two big chicken breast's with each plate meant we knew we weee bringing home lunch tomorrow, but I was not ready for how crispy & juicy & delicious the seasoning took that chicken to a whole other level!!
The St. Louis ribs are bigger & meatier than their baby back counter part, and the portion was so generous that despite our best efforts we still had a couple ribs left over too, but it wasn't from lack of trying! Upon the first bite of the Mac & cheese Anthony remarked, "Oh, real Mac & cheese!" If you're gonna call yourselves a soul BBQ joint you better show up with an out of the park Mac & cheese & Felix cracked a walk off homer in that department.
The Cobb salad is generous & fresh, with a pile of blue cheese, whole hard boiled egg, salty sweet bacon & a nice portion of chicken.
While we we all over stuffed already & should have tapped out, the boys won their soccer match & I had to use that as an excuse to order the peach cobbler. Again, a place like this has to deliver a great cobbler with that distinctive cobbler crust smothered in great fruit filling & this cobbler is a real winner. I loved it, and the whipped cream was a tasty touch.
The apple pie is a basic dish, but with a lot of range between okay & out of sight. This apple pie is homemade, a great crust, a big portion & full of cinnamon sweet chunks of apple. Simply put, the dessert plates were finished fast even though everyone said they were too full to eat any!!! These desserts were so good & reasonably priced, I'd encourage someone who just wanted to go out for a coffee & dessert to hit Felix's spot! They were that good.
If you've made it this far, you're probably hungry. I'd suggest you head over to Felix's !!
Thank you again, Beverly!
