Bento Boxes Are a Taiwanese Train Tradition | Eater

"The hotel runs a large restaurant serving traditional chicken-leg and pork bentos in returnable metal tins (with souvenir tins available), and sits by a small outdoor market once famous for fresh wasabi and now known for high-quality wasabi salt." - Karissa Chen

Very lovely comfortable hotel indeed, right in the center of fenchichu 老街. Stayed in a western room in the 2nd wing, and whilst room is sparse, loved the wooden floor and how clean it is. The bedsheets even have that fresh smell to them! Oh yes, if you’re staying here, do go for their complimentary tours by their lovely guide. 3 tours a day (830, 1700 and 1500). I learnt so much about Fenchichu and cedar wood, and nature thanks to the tour!

We had the cheapest room which had a nice Japanese vibe. The bed was comfy although a bit hard. Best part definitely the location and the staff. Fenqihu is a very cool place if you don’t stay in Alishan park. Nice hikes and a few shops and restaurants. Staff was very helpful and they also got me a driver to take me back to fenqihu when we left Alishan late.

The accommodation was surprisingly comfortable. We stayed in a western type room vs tatami style. Hot water is only available during certain hours of the day and breakfast is a 100 ntd 7-11 voucher. The bathroom layout is the worst. The toilet is so close to the sink you can barely sit straight. Location is near the bus stop. Their claim to fame is their bento box meals in a silver bento box tin. The price is expensive in comparison to other restaurants but you get 10 ntd off if you stay at the hotel. Honestly, the bento box was more gimmicky. The flavor wasnt as good as other restaurants with cheaper bento box meals. Go elsewhere for your bento box but stay here during your visit to Fenqihu.

Iconic Bentos Supposedly the railroad workers used to eat bentos while working on the rail here. You get to choose either soy sauce chicken, braised pork, or combo. I had to get the combo to try both. Pork was super tender and flavorful. Chicken was decent as well, although not as soft as I would have liked. Served with rice, bamboo shoots, and dried squid that has been dyed fluorescent red. It was quite a hefty lunch served in a metal bento box. Grab a seat on the roof and ladle yourself some seaweed soup.

The hotel itself is nice. We got a room with beautiful view. However, the location was VERY inconvenient to go to Alishan and to come back to the hotel. There are limited local buses ( only four schedule buses) to go and from Alishan to Fengqihu but you can’t get into the buses because the bus is full 🙄. We had to hire local taxi to go back to our hotel from Alishan. The taxi fare is very expensive and you can’t really Uber. I would recommend the hotel to have shuttle buses to and from Alishan for their guests. Otherwise, I would recommend you to drive or stay at Alishan.

Decent, historic hotel staying in Japanese style Tatami mats. Breakfast is a 100TWD Seven-Eleven Voucher. Room looked a bit dated but was comfortable even though there was no aircon. Slight downside is we found a dead cockroach in the room.

Excellent Hotel in Fenqihu. Big room, tatami style. Right at the Old Street and many hiking trails nearby. Highly recommended. Car parking can be difficult during peak hours. The bento box is a must-try.

Centrally located with delicious traditional bento boxes with 7-11 in the same building. Take their free tours as the tour guide is very informative (but in Mandarin)!

Yelp
I love this hotel at the first sight. On the first floor, the famous bento box with pork chop, vegetable, dry tofu and soup, smells so good. It is amazing to enjoy the bento box at the wooden-crafted tables, sitting on the cool wooden stool. Our room is a surprising delight, as it has the Japanese style from in sleeping area, living room area and bathroom as well as the outside hallway. The services are great too. I enjoyed their guided tour services to check out different interesting sites near the hotel.
