The Bay Area’s Most Exciting New Restaurants of 2020 | Eater SF

"What makes this new sushi spot so exciting is how approachable it is: omakase options start at $25 for five nigiri (still available for takeout) featuring non-generic selections like buttery ocean trout dabbed with miso or blue shrimp topped with toasted pine nuts, while izakaya-style appetizers such as King oyster mushrooms stir-fried in miso butter are equally notable." - Luke Tsai

Google
Found this highly-rated spot and it was fantastic. It's a wonderful fusion of traditional Japanese sushi and creative modern tapas. I loved their philosophy, which is even stated on the menu: they 'do not appreciate: FANCY ROLLS.' That's when you know they're serious about quality. Everything we tried was delicious, but the absolute standout was the Mentaiko Udon. It exceeded all expectations. It was incredibly fragrant, perfectly seasoned (not too salty), and rich without being heavy at all. A must-order! Another must-try is the Iku-uni-himo appetizer, which is a perfect bite of uni (sea urchin), monkfish liver (ankimo), and ikura (salmon roe). They finish it with a drizzle of truffle oil at the table. For the nigiri, the Scallop was the best we had—so fresh and sweet. Highly recommend this place. A true gem in the city!

Google
One of the most delightful spots in SF. Given how incredible the quality of their food is, they could charge more if they wanted to, but they keep it cozy. The Toro Uni Ikura mini-don is worth flying across the country for. The nigiri omakase is massively underpriced and incredible. The tri-tip katsu is light tapas fare (instead of a huge filling portion) that tastes better than what I had in Tokyo. Strong recommend.

Google
After living in Tokyo for many years, I've struggled to find comparable Japanese food in SF... until I discovered this gem! It's the best Japanese food -- especially the nigiri omakase, miso walu, oxtail soup, flame torched saba (mackeral), and more. Wonderful service and chic izakaya ambiance. I'd give it 6 stars if I could!

Google
It was great, not many places are great at both sushi (omakase format) and Izakaya food. They pull it off, and deserves its current 4.8. If it’s not already, it should be a bib. One of the better Udons I’ve had and the nigiri had the right rice <> fish combo, the fish was excellent, and the rice was cooked right. I can get detailed and say that I think the temperature of the rice could be optimized, but then we’re talking about making something already fantastic into an even higher level. Overall, great, and good service too. Don’t always leave reviews, but def check this out. The quintessential neighborhood sushi spot with a bonified Izakaya as well.

Google
Always come here for their Oxtail Pot, highly recommended for any soup lovers! Nigiris are great but not that overwhelming. Compared to other Omakase places in the city, I feel that the rice is typically too seasoned with soy sauce so might be a little salty. Wouldn’t recommend the squid karage as it’s too greasy (from multiple experiences). Anyway still loving their warm, romantic vibe overall! Great for dates or catchup with friends.

Google
The food was amazing and the chef was engaging and fun. My friend and I both got the Omakase (as well as several other one-off orders). The fish was exceptional and the rice was perfect.

Google
Everything I had here was high quality and very fresh. My favorite was the O Toro nigiri. Buttery texture and melts in the mouth. I’d probably skip the wagyu beef, but that’s just because I’m not a fan of beef. Even the simple spicy tuna roll was very good! Excellent sushi rice. Service was fantastic as well. I absolutely will be coming back here!

Google
Had the most wonderful ikura, toro, uni don at Fennikusu the other day. They might not only specialize in sushi, but this is my favorite place to get sushi in SF at an affordable price. We also enjoyed all of the belly nigiri. Definitely check this place out.

Yelp
Amazingly delicious and fascinating place! Place can get busy, so glad we made reservations. Great mix of sushi and izakaya dishes, with many seasonal/daily specials--- really a great mix for everyone looking to quench their Japanese hunger. We ordered a ton, but still so much to look forward to for next time.. Everything we had was delicious, and fresh. Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The vibe is really artsy and cool, with tons of little signs organized on one wall. Place can hold a large group party too. Parking will be the normal "hard to find" street parking, and place is a bit far from a garage. So don't recommend driving if you can. Overall, this is probably one of my fav in the city now!

Yelp
We returned on a Thursday around 5:30pm for dinner. Got a table immediately. Restaurant was only 15% full. Friendly waitstaff. Ordered the omakase sashimi 10pcs, miso walu, anago nigiris, muki hotate 3pcs sashimi and king sake toro 3pcs sashimi to share with my partner. Sushi tasted fresh. Originally wanted anago as a 3pcs sashimi but the chef recommended it as a nigiri. I recommend not to pour any soy sauce into the dish because all the sushi was already dressed and we were reminded by the chef each time. Bill after tip came out to about $170. We had to dine elsewhere because we were not full.

Yelp
Went here for dinner on a Saturday night around 8pm. Called ahead and got a reservation for two but there were empty tables when we arrived so you may not need to do that. Staff was very friendly and the place is cute and has anime decorations. We got the five piece omakase nigiri and a selection of four nigiri and shared some tapas. To me, the tapas were the star of the show. We got the ika and uni, baked baby scallops with uni, the shishito peppers, and the miso soup. The scallops were phenomenal! It comes with two little bites on two scallop shells and since it's baked there's a delicious caramelization that blends well with the uni and scallop. Must try! They ika and uni I recommend as well. I also recommend the king sake toro (it's torched) and the o toro. Some of the nigiri like the scallop one had too much wasabi for me. Cute spot if you're in the area!

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot for authentic sushi. This is not your Americanized sushi roll experience but high quality sushi. My group tried the corn fritters, gyoza, and 8 piece omakase--it did not disappoint. The restaurant is bigger than it looks and we were able to get a last minute reservation for 5 people without a problem.

Yelp
Cute intimate spot, delicious tapas style dishes, & sashimi. We were for date night and had the most pleasant experience. Our waitress was so sweet and honest about recommending the best dishes for our $ and flavor profile. We were seated toward the back in an intimate two seat table, and next to us were to friends who seemed to be catching up on life over a meal. Loved conversing with them and sharing what items we were all ordering. Honestly - likely why I'm giving 5/5 stars as vibes were amazing. The 5 piece omakase was only $30-$35 (I think) and each piece was unique with their own flavor profiles & sauces. Such an experience with each bite. We enjoyed the idea of tapas style dishes as we got to try multiple items (not all pictured) and some were a new take! Corn Tempura--fire fire fire. We love IPA, so when we saw Matcha IPA on the menu we were so excited because we have yet to try. Such an elite combo!

Yelp
Holy hell this place was good. It was giving authentic Japanese cuisine baby, there wasn't a California roll on the menu. Fantastic Japanese tapas and everything was so Delicious. Me and my mansss enjoyed the Valentine's Day pre fix menu which came with a variety of dishes, including sashimi, omakase nigiri, hamachi crudo, udon, yuzu brussel sprouts, trip tip katsu I mean I could go on. We particularly enjoyed the thiccc and saucy enoki mushrooms. The flavor was buss down! The service was quick! The sake was flowing! I need to come back asap!

Yelp
Fenikkusu serves some interesting dishes that you wouldn't find at your typical Japanese restaurant. As the name says they serve tapas (ie small portion) dishes and specialize in sushi. The mini kaisen don is the real star of the menu and is a well thought out balance of sashimi rice, aromatics and salmon roe for some brininess. The mentaiko pasta is also a really awesome dish. I would come back here for these two dishes. I also enjoyed the corn fritters and the mackerel. I would stay away from the oxtail pot and is the main reason why I didn't give a five star rating.

Yelp
The ambience of this place is so cute and cozy. We got the matcha IPA which was so smooth. Then we got the mushroom in miso sauce, escolar, and 8pc omakase. The chef makes it in front of you if you sit at the bar and he was super sweet! Amazing service and even more amazing food.

Yelp
Cozy sushi and tapas spot in Mission. Service was great, very attentive. Food we tried were all good. We ordered- Hamachi carpaccio - 5/5 a must! $13 Mentaiko udon - 5/5 a must, chewy noodles so flavorful I would come back for these! Waygu carpaccio- $15 Unagi don - flavorful $26 5-piece Omasake nigiri - $28 this was my least favorite as somehow the fish was flavorless. Overall a great Japanese tapas place with sake.

Anthony C.

Yelp
Really nice homey place with delicious sushi and sashimi. Friendly service. All but the katsu tri tip were great.

Yelp
Amazing service and ambiance and even better food. This place serves wonderful omakase that's fresh and unique, but my favorite is the mentai udon. It's amazing and I always get this as takeout as well.

Yelp
This was an outstanding experience. I felt the quality of the fish. Every single piece was crafted by the chef, and it melted in my mouth. This is one of the best sushi I've ever had. Thank you, Tony.

Yelp
We love this neighborhood gem! The sushi is always fresh and well-prepared. They serve more traditional style nigiri and sashimi so don't come here expecting rolls. Besides their nigiri, their mentaiko udon is and eryingii mushroom stir fry are favourites. We actually like Fennikkusu a bit better than Saru! Definitely worth coming here for sushi!

Yelp
I can't believe the last time I went to Fenikkusu was all the way back in spring last year - it way too good to be missing it for so long! This time I tried: - three-piece sake nigiri - my one true fish love is salmon always and forever - it was so fresh and buttery here - mini kaizen don - had the most adorable presentation/I wish I could keep the baby wooden spoon. The fish was a good variety and again very fresh but did not include sake so I'm glad I ordered that separately! My favorite part was the uni which was SO creamy and the perfect touch of sweet. Lovely place and it seems like you can count on being able to get a table quite easily!

Yelp
Have been coming here for years now and this place has my heart. Each bite is an experience itself. Every piece is flavorful and hand crafted with not just love but deep intention. I'm so thankful to have been introduced to this beautiful place. Incredible atmosphere and a wonderful team doing what they love. Always will come back

Yelp
This place checked all the boxes of an excellent SF sushi place, especially the all-important one: fresh, delicious fish. But what really sets this place apart and makes it special is the almost three-page tapas menu, which includes light bites categorized by cuisine (seafood, veggie, or "meat," e.g., beef). For mains, I ordered the chirashi and my wife ordered the 10-piece omakase nigiri -- each was delicious, with little further explanation necessary. But the tapas, oh man. So good, and such a fun part of the dining experience here to mix it up from your everyday great sushi (not that there's anything wrong with great sushi, of course!). We ordered a variety of items from the seafood and meat tapas menus -- carpaccio, scallops, ika and uni, and smelt fillets. All were excellent, but I especially loved the smelt fillets, which came with a side of salt that made them especially flavorful. All in all, a wonderful meal, made so -- in my opinion -- because of the diverse array of tapas to complement the stellar sushi.

Yelp
Came here for an early dinner on a Thursday with some friends. I would def make a reservation if you come on a weekend or even for a later dinner. We got a couple of things to share but the dish that stood out the most was definitely this don with ikura, toro, and uni. After mixing it it was the perfect bite. The mentaiko udon was also really good as well as the hamachi carpaccio. This is such a great spot for a smaller group dinner or a cute date night. I will definitely be coming back to try out their other dishes!

Yelp
With only one full table, I knew something was amiss. The mission is usually packed with people during dinner time on a Sunday night. This place was practically empty. Waygu beef carpaccio was overcooked. Like carpaccio is supposed to be on the rare side, but I knew from looking at it that it would be a fail. Eating it only proved my point. Maguro zuke was just okay, and so was the O-toro. Had better elsewhere. My uni and Toro bowl for almost $60 was not worth it. They let you order one per table, but my table didn't even like the one we ordered. The brown rice was dry, and the uni wasn't melt in your mouth buttery. The Toro tasted like it had been sitting in the Tupperware for a while. The fried Anago was plain and boring and came with tonkatsu sauce. They should season the batter. The asparagus was horrible. It had a lot of hard edges that should have been stripped off. It's unedible if you don't strip off the hard part. Waste of $8 or so. The sushi was just okay. We thought it was overpriced and really couldn't say it was super fresh or the best we ever had. Just overall disappointed.

Yelp
This was the most delicious meal I've had in months. Fresh. Simple. Decadent. Not pictured are the curried mussels and a large Asahi, which paired perfectly for me. The service was friendly and attentive and we loved people watching from the window seat while oceanic delicacies melted in our mouths. Go here with your hedonist foodie friends to savor a uniquely ethereal eating experience.

Yelp
Wow! This place is incredible. How is it not on every recommended restaurant list. I've been to Michelin star omakase restaurants and this place is better. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
I have a lot of sushi in SF, and don't sleep on Fenikkusu! I am a huge ikura uni lover, and their Uni Ikura Toro mini don is incredible $45 is a steal for the price and portion (light dinner). Mentaiko Udon is also great (although I prefer Bon Nene - this one is a great side dish to the don) I definitely satisfied my uni craving here. It's underrated and more flavorful than a traditional sushi spot.

Yelp
A hidden gem for Japanese food. I was impressed by the experience from start to end- there's a variety of small plates that were all delicious - fun takes ranging from wagyu carpaccio, simply prepared vegetables, to baked scallops and then of course- the sushi. We opted for the omakase which was very fairly priced (our final bill came out to less than $100 per person with the small plates and drinks!). The freshness of the fish is definitely noticeable and prepared subtly to let the fish shine. Overall, everything was well-balanced and prepared with careful thought. It's one of my favorite places to grab Japanese food in the city- and one I heartily recommend to my friends from out of town!

Yelp
Deliciously fresh and inspiring food, as well as friendly service and a warm ambiance! Upon walking in, you're greeted at the door by friendly waitstaff, who immediatedly start taking care of you. For drinks, I recommend the yuzu ale for a light and fruity pairing to your meal. The hakkasain sake is stronger; more dry and fresh, but still light on the palate. Knowing this is a tapas restaurant, we opted for their sashimi omakase ($53 for 10 pieces), as well as a variety of their other small plates to make for a complete meal. I was impressed by the quality of everything! After we ordered, during our wait for our appetizers, the chef sent over a plate of their file fish jerky on the house to thank us for waiting (not even that long!). I was touched by the attention they paid their customers! The jerky was yummy; salty, umami, with a light chew, and when topped with the mayo, made for a creamy bite. What a great start to the meal! The hamachi was so fresh. The texture is soft, but still with a light chew. The dressing is lightly acidic and sour, just enough to lift the ocean brine out of the flavor. The tempura fish is a whole fish, filleted and fried! I think frying the fish whole allowed the moisture to stay inside the fish, while still getting a crispy exterior. The sauce is a nice complement to the light flavor; sweet and sour, but not overpowering. The sashimi omakase was delightful! - Tuna: slight briney flavor after eating. Fresh, tender, nice amount of pre applied wasabi. - Salmon: a little tough and drier, not as much flavor. - Hamachi: elegant smokey flavor. The texture is tougher. - Blue shrimp: flavorful, umami, a little sweet, chewy texture. - Otoro: The star of the sashimi plate. Super soft and melty and fatty! Beautiful. - Uni with salmon roe: sweet and savory, creamy, with the two parts working well together as a whole. The unagi with cucumbers is hearty! The warm, sweet and sourness melts in your mouth, and is brought higher by the crunchy freshness of the cucumber. I thought the ebi nigiri could use more flavor; the texture is kind of limp and bland, and the natural sweetness of the shrimp doesn't shine quite as much. The california roll has such creamy crab! The creaminess of the crab makes the whole bite cohesive. Lastly, the saffron mussels were a bit of a letdown. There were bits of broken shell throughout the stew, so you need to be careful. The flavor is floral from the saffron, spicy, and a little overly salty. The texture of the mussels are also a bit tough. Throughout our meal, we were given complimentary drinks thanks to it being my dining partner's birthday. At the end, the chef sent over some delicious tamago on the house! It was so fluffy and palate cleansing. I especially appreciate the hospitality by the staff here. I look forward to returning, and highly recommend this locals favorite spot!

Yelp
This place is truly such a hidden gem. I've never had anything here that wasn't excellent. From the perfectly seasoned rice to the gorgeous fresh fish and all the savory flavors in between, everything here is unique and delicious

Yelp
Grabbed dinner here with some friends on a Saturday night after hearing some good things about this place and it did not disappoint! We made a reservation so we were seated right away. They have a fairly simple menu but they definitely do everything well! We ordered the sashimi salad to share and it was the perfect way to start a meal. The fish was so fresh and the dressing they used complimented the salad perfectly! Also got the mentaiko udon and I think it's one of the best udon dishes I've ever had. Such a simple dish but there was so much flavor in the dish. Each of us also got the 8-piece omakase and every piece tasted amazing! Such fresh fish and the portions were generous as well. Highly recommend checking this place out for a dinner with friends or a date night!

Alyssa M.

Yelp
I only took one photo but the omakase nigiri here is always so incredible! I've come several times and every time the food is so yummy. Also got the Brussels with apple, miso soup, and gyoza. I recommend it all. If you're looking for delicious omakase - this is the place.

Yelp
I came here because my foodie friend who lives in the Mission called this spot a hidden gem, and she was 100% dead on! It's a great, affordable but still high-quality option when you're craving sushi but don't want to drop $200 on omakase at Robin, ju-ni, Wako, etc. It's also pretty easy to get a reservation (and I'm sure they can accommodate walk-ins too), which is another huge plus. As for the food, we shared a couple apps for the table including gyoza, maki, tuna avo, and hamachi carpaccio. I usually never order gyoza at restaurants cause I feel like it's generally not much better than the stuff you can pan fry at home, but this place's gyoza was AMAZING. Honestly the best gyoza I've ever had. We loved it so much we ordered it again. Most of us ordered nigiri of the omakase menu. Many of my friends got the 8 piece omakase nigiri. One thing to note for that is the nigiri are a bit smaller than standard-sized nigiri, so you definitely won't be satisfied just ordering that. But otherwise the sushi was great. I ordered nigiri a la carte, and my absolute favorites were the shima aji, tsuri aji, chu toro, o toro, king salmon toro, and of course the A5 wagyu. Things like o toro, fatty salmon, and wagyu you expect to be amazing, but I was particularly blown away by the shima aji. I could come back and order 8 of those and I wouldn't be upset about it! We also ordered the Wakatake Daiginjo sake which was FANTASTIC. I'm not a huge fan of sake in general, but they have very detailed descriptions of each sake's tasting notes on the alcohol menu, so I just went for the bottle that most closely matched my palette and was thoroughly impressed. The only negative thing is that they didn't have dessert when I came here :( And I'm a huge sweet tooth so that bummed me out. But you could always just head to one of the million dessert spots in the Mission afterward (which is what we did). Definitely will be coming back here and can't recommend it enough!

Yelp
We came here for my friends birthday. She and her sister got the omakase 10 piece plus some maki and other raw fish. They loved it and kept raving about the sweet shrimp and the quality of the fish. I am a non- raw fish eater but was super happy with my beet salad, miso butter mushrooms and grilled Hamachi Kama. The service was great-- everyone was so nice and the ambiance was relaxed and cozy. I also thought it was pretty neat that the back room was covered in some great old school anime posters and fan stuff.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've visited Fenikkusu and I'm honestly kicking myself for not coming back sooner. Came on a Monday night and while it was pretty empty when we first arrived around 6pm, it quickly filled up after. We ordered an assortment of tapas and nigiris and the standout dishes were definitely the mentaiko udon, geso karaage, scallop nigiri, and kamasu nigiri. The fish tasted fresh and I loved the way they treated each one - definitely no need to dip in extra soy. The mentaiko udon had a nice smoky flavor to it and was so addicting; I almost ordered a second plate! And the geso karaage had a crispy shell while still being very tender - not chewy at all! The thing I like most about Fenikkusu is the variety of items you get to choose from and so I would definitely recommend getting a smattering of items from each of the different menu sections!

Yoana S.

Yelp
A dear friend loved Fenikkusu prior to moving out of the city and we've been yearning to head to Fenikkusu. Food: The quality of the fish is truly impeccable. Wide variety of seafood options for their sashimi / nigiri. Highly recommend the marinated tuna, though everything is amazing. Service: The omakase was timed well in that we didn't feel rushed but also weren't questioning when our next piece would be served. We sat at the bar and were able to see both chefs make the sushi for us and tell us about the flavors to expect, so the experience felt personable. definitely recommend the bar for this spot Ambiance: Cozy! Great spot :) Would definitely go again!

Yelp
Came here with high spirits to celebrate Valentine's Day, omakase style! My spirit slowly diminished because of the way the service was throughout the dining, unfortunately. We had to obtain the waitress attention from the start to end. The main chef made us move a spot over to get the omakase out better to us (I thought it's for us to be become closer with the chef on the interaction thought, but no). The omakase and tapas were on point - standard, but if I'm paying for omakase and ordering up more in addition to it, I expect to have been treated better. The chef making the omakase, said to eat it quick since it doesn't taste good if we wait too long. I was taking my time taking pictures on the individual ones that were coming out that's why. What ticked my nerve the most was when I requested for a chef's special nigiri and the chef said I'm very busy for it for this evening. I don't have time right now. He straight out said to my face since I was sitting at the bar. I'm like thinking - wow you couldn't be more rude while I'm happily enjoying what you're serving out with my fiancé and you could have responded in a better way. This was for Valentine's. Nice romance nor love was in the air, but tension. They could have given us something else to substitute that tone of his, but didn't. I left bummed out and not a usual good feeling when I go for Omakase, which is horrible; to top it off, it was Valentine's. I would recommend going somewhere else in the city for omakase. There's plenty around and I went out of my way to go here. You'll be treated way better for the money that you're going to burn somewhere else. I'm never coming back here and would never suggest this spot when there's so many others that treats me better in this city.

Yelp
Every time we come to SF we come here first. Delicious sushi and unique dishes, prepared with care. The ribs were juicy and flavorful. The tomato salad was refreshing. The udon was well done. Great neighborhood spot.

Yelp
Came here for Omakase and some Japanese tapas. Overall pretty good quality food + reasonable prices! Fairly casual setting as well but for upscale food. Omakase comes with 8 pieces for around $50-60. I had to order a couple extras cos ya girl needs 20 pieces, so I do wish they had a larger Omakase option! But I think it's because there are so many tapas that they also offer. Some of my favorite bites were: - uni (no surprise) - blue shrimp (loved how they topped with with a creamy sauce + pine nuts after searing) - halibut Some tapas we ordered; - Ika + uni (very good! I love squid and it was clever to use it like noodles) - mushrooms - delicious sesame sauce and huge portions - seared wagyu - some of my friends favorites, it was tender - mussels - I didn't love the sauce, but the mussels were tender The tapas came out slowly, I thought they would be done before the Omakase but I'm wondering if they lost our order in the kitchen since I had to follow up with the servers. The mussels ended up being the last thing that came out after I asked twice about them. Service was good, there was a bit of confusion and seating in the beginning where we were asked to move and move back so that was sort of annoying, but everything was figured out in the end and the staff was apologetic. Would definitely come back :)

Yelp
Great spot for affordable omakase. Ask to be seated at the counter so you can get the pieces served one by one. I think at the tables, you just get a plate with all the pieces at once. How does this compare to higher end omakase spots? tbh I'm not a super discerning sushi eater, so it's hard for me to tell fish quality beyond a certain point, and in general I found the fish here reached that point. But I did find some pieces a bit too wasabi forward for me, and I could tell that the rice was sometimes a bit harder than ideal. Yes high end omakase will be better, but this is not a bad option for satisfying a craving. For our 8 piece omakase, we got: hirame (halibut) umi masu (ocean trout) shima aji (striped jack) bluefin tuna marinated in soy sauce king salmon toro tsuri aji (horse mackerel) ao ebi (grilled shrimp) chu toro My favorite of the pieces was the salmon belly. All of the pieces can also be ordered a la carte if you want to have more. We also ended up adding the iku-uni-himo which was quite tasty, especially if you like ikura.

Yelp
Great quality sushi, pot, tapas, not overpriced, with unique offerings like : blue shrimp, engawa, oxtail soup, usutsukuri thinly sliced hirame We made a small uphill walk from mission district to the restaurant. It is in a charming neighborhood filled with beautiful houses. The staff was nice, it was easy when we visited to find outdoor seating and walk in without reservation, but the restaurant quickly got more and more popular and full throughout the night, so reservation will help. There were a few popular items sold out on the menu, which supposedly features fish from Japan. Many sushi options offer both nigiri with rice and without rice. That's pretty helpful. The quality was quite good: the blue shrimp aoebi is super good, delicious, fresh, uniquely found in only a few sushi places in sf. Engawa torched nigiri simply melts in your mouth, it was rich and delicious. The uni, eel were good classics, nothing too surprising. The salmon was okay. Not too tasty. The usutsuki thinly sliced plate of hirame fish which often showcases chef's skills was extremely well, done, well presented. That's hard to find in sf. What I love about this place is that in addition to offer fairly good quality sushi, they also offer tapas and nabe. This is great for friends who want something warm or prefer cooked food, or something not nigiri. The oxtail soup was well receive and loved, without tasty turnips, and fall-off-the bone slow cooked oxtail. We also tried the squid tapas (in wasabi) pretty good. The outdoor seating is limited, just two tables, but enclosed in a beautiful parklet, decorated with beautiful rows of lights. Overall great place, we will be back. Our friends loved it, visiting from east coast. Only regret is we didn't try the American style rolls. There are quite a few options

Yelp
Enjoyed dinner at Fenikkusu for a birthday date, and it did not disappoint. The food was beautifully presented, the fish was expertly cut and fresh, and the ambiance was inviting, warmly-lit, and fun with references to Japanese culture and anime peppered throughout. The sake oyako don was phenomenal, and the mentaiko udon was perfection. As always in the Mission, parking can be tough so plan for transit ahead of time.

Yelp
We've been here multiple times. We have sat at a table and at the bar. I personally enjoy the table experience in the back room more as sitting at the bar is loud. The last time we were here, we sat at the bar. It was fun watching the sushi chef cut up the fish. The waitress was attentive. My favorites are the o toro, Chu toro and unagi nigiri. The fish is consistently fresh here. The spicy tuna maki is good too. I recommend this spot for reasonably priced fresh sushi.

Yelp
This spot definitely felt like a hidden gem! We search for a couple of hours for affordable sushi places that also had great ambience and great quality of food, and this was exactly that! The vibe is very relaxing and elegant and beautiful, and the food was even better! We did the Omakase and it wasso delicious, and you definitely have to try the udon noodles! This is a great spot for a day, or to celebrate a fun occasion! The staff is also fabulous, and so welcoming and kind

Yelp
Fenikkusu is located on quiet Guerrero St, away from the much louder and more trafficked Valencia with its hip vegan joints. We spent around $50 per person but I was still hungry at the end, so it can be a bit expensive, but I think the quality of the fish is there. We ordered: Ika & Uni ($12) - 5/5. Loved how fresh this dish tasted; the squid had a slight sweetness to it and there was a good amount of uni in the bowl. Karashi renkon ($8) - 4/5. This was pretty inventive, and the miso stuffed into the lotus root kind of reminded me of egg yolk powder. It was crispy and tasty, but a tad bit greasy. Una-Q ($8) - 3/5. This is basically just unagi on some pickled cucumber. The flavors were fine, but I wish we'd gotten more eel. Omakase sashimi 10 pc ($50) - 5/5. This was beautifully plated, and each piece of fish was delicious and fresh. My favorite was the ebi. Service was good at the beginning, but as the restaurant started filling up around 7pm, it was harder to get our server's attention. We also tried to order udon, but they had an issue with their stove so we ended up canceling and eating ramen at home.

Yelp
Walking by this unassuming spot for a year, we finally decided to check it out since they have resumed indoor dining. We went a little wild and ordered the cured mackerel, baby scallops, uni and squid, miso soup, and two sashimi lunch sets. The cured mackerel which is torched at the table was my absolute favorite- oily, salty, flavorful mackerel elevated through the curing and torching. The uni and squid was well balanced together, the sauce being phenomenal (we dipped everything else in it). The sashimi was fresh and well portioned. Our server was very accommodating and friendly. We will DEF be back to explore all the tapas!

Yelp
COVID-19 OUTDOOR DINING Kiji went bye bye, then Kingza. Both places I enjoyed especially Kiji but they didn't last. Then, Fenikkusu, another new sushi restaurant opens up in its place... BRAVE. Then, COVID hit a month later and they're still here....with little social media presence. They must be doing something right so I had to give them a try! At this time, Fenikkusu is open for takeout, delivery (3rd party apps), indoor dining, and outdoor dining. There's three 4-tops in their covered parklet with heat lamps. C O V I D - 1 9 S A F T E Y P R E C A U T I O N S * Server and sushi chef wore masks properly. * Server wore gloves. * Outdoor tables spaced out more than 6 feet. * Hand sanitizer available. M E N U * Soup, salads, tapas, maki rolls, sashimi, nigiri, and donburi. F O O D * Kinbinago Karaage - Fried Japanese Baby Herring ($8): https://bit.ly/2OZCkz8 Nice starter, the fried baby herring was light and crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. * Eryngii Mushroom - Stir-fried King Oyster Mushroom w/ miso butter ($10): https://bit.ly/38QzR0W Last minute add on, and I'm glad I made the decision to order this based on the yelp reviews. You can't go wrong with meaty mushrooms bathed in umami-rich miso butter. * 8 pc Omakase ($42) --Part 1: Hirame, Shima Aji, Tsuri Aji, King Salmon Toro: https://bit.ly/30RuFW7 --Part 2: Akami, Engawa (?), Ao Ebi, Ikura+Uni: https://bit.ly/2OGQF3y Edomae-style nigiri. The shari (sushi rice) is koshihikari rice seasoned with red vinegar and brown sugar that gives the sushi rice a brown hue. For the price, the 8 pc omakase nigiri was good. The sushi rice was well-seasoned with a firm, chewy bite and the proper room temperature. Each piece was seasoned and/or garnished so there wasn't need for soy sauce. But light on the wasabi so I did ask for extra on the side. Fav pieces: the buttery King Salmon Toro and Ao Ebi topped with a creamy sauce and pine nuts. * Nigiri A La Carte: Santa Barbara Uni ($8), Otoro ($9x2), and Hamachi Toro ($5): https://bit.ly/3ePJOiQ My pieces were the Uni and Otoro. The Uni was perfectly sweet and briny. I was bummed about the Otoro. The torching altered the texture to a mushy tartare. S E R V I C E Polite and prompt. Overall, Fenikkusu is a nice neighborhood sushi restaurant. I had early dinner reservations on a weeknight and we were the only customers there. Personally, I won't be comfortable with indoor dining for a long time but if you're looking to slowly ease into indoor dining, Fenikkusu may be a good option.

Yelp
Excellent food and saki. Recommend the 5 piece omakase, the ribs, and the sushi salad.

Yelp
Had 2 fantastic experiences at Fenikkusu in the past few months, and looking forward to more! We ordered the 8 piece nigiri omakase both times. This time, we also added on the wagyu and uni afterward. Uni was some of the best I've ever had. Special shout-out to Gary for explaining all the dishes to us, answering our questions, and being an awesome host in general. Was able to get a seat for 2 without a reservation at 6:30 on a Sunday. Surprised there wasn't a waitlist given the quality of the food. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
I was excited for a tapas concept for Japanese food because a lot of the food is bite sized. The staff recommended 5 tapas for four people, so we thought it would be a pretty decent portion. Although, as you may be able to tell from the photos, the portions weren't that large. We left still ravenous. I do want to note that the flavors were all great and delicious, just small portions. I highly recommend the stir fried udon and hamachi capriccio. I'd probably get omakase or some rolls if I come back so the meal is more filling. It's just that the cost does add up so expect to spend at least $40 per person for a filling meal.

Yelp
What an underrated sushi/omakase restaurant! My boyfriend and i came to fenikkusu from a friend's recommendation a couple days ago. The food was amazing and the price point is not bad at all compared to other omakase places in sf, especially with extremely generous portion sizes. My favorite dish was the Hamachi. The fish was so fresh and delicious. I've heard good things about ordering ala carte so next time I'm coming back and ordering more items like the udon!

Yelp
The staff unabashedly tried to run up our check. When we refused, they attempted to shame us for not eating "correctly." Wow. If in the mood for a bunch of sad, cash hungry fools rushing to empty your wallet for a crap attempt at Japanese food, this place is for you. If not, there are plenty of better options in this city. Just skip it.

Yelp
Fenikkusu is the quintessential neighborhood sushi restaurant in SF. It's probably on the higher end given the variety of items on its menu and it delivers a good overall dining experience. My friends and I came here for Saturday dinner and we shared several of the "tapas" (deep-fried Japanese baby herring and squid legs, ika and Uni, baby park pork ribs, eryngji mushroom), several classic rolls (Cali, Dragon, Salmon/Avocado, Soft Shell Crab), some nigiri (halibut fin and sweet shrimp), sashimi (fatty and medium-fatty tuna) and a bottle of sake. The "tapas" were great and the best plate of food that night was the stir-fried king oyster mushroom with miso butter. The sashimi we ordered (O-toro and Chu-toro) and the two specialty nigiri were excellent but the rolls were just mediocre and not at the same level as the small plates. Service was OK and with tax and tip, this was about $80 per person. It's definitely a solid neighborhood spot but next time, I'm going to load up on the "tapas" and skip the rolls.

Yelp
I love it here. The fish is so good, the rice is so good. Tasteful and perfectly lit inside. Friendly and attentive service. The omakase is yum. Also tried the udon appetizer and it was fire. This is my fav sushi resto for omakase - it's a high quality experience that doesn't leave you broke
