This Is The Best European City Break For 2025, According to Time Out

Housed in a historic harbour warehouse and opening in 2025, this new museum is set to be the world’s first to guide visitors on a tour of the world and the impact of migration through art. It has already been named as one of the best things to do in the world this year, making 2025 a brilliant time to plan a visit. - Liv Kelly

We visited the **FENIX Museum** on October 4, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. My husband and I both loved it. The museum has a fascinating history and striking modern architecture. The spiral staircase leading up to the observation deck is truly impressive. Even though it was a very windy and rainy day when we went, and I had to explore the viewing platform in the rain, it was still an amazing experience. It’s a perfect spot for panoramic photos of Rotterdam. The museum’s content is also remarkable. It’s not a traditional ethnographic museum — it’s an art museum. What I especially loved was how it explores the topic of migration through different stories and perspectives: cultural enrichment, assimilation, and deeply personal human experiences of migration. It really makes you think. We expected to go through the entire museum in about two hours, but we ended up spending all that time in just one hall — simply because there’s so much to see, read, and reflect on. The exhibits are genuinely captivating. There are also fascinating historical artifacts, like a **Nansen passport**, which was incredible to see. So I highly, *highly* recommend visiting this museum — especially if you love art and the theme of migration speaks to you.

The building itself is a total work of art. I love how the stairs are designed with multiple routes to wander. The exhibition spaces are bright and super spacious, and the immigration-themed show fits Dutch diversity. There's a cute little viewing platform on the top floor with city views.

An extraordinary experience that dives deep into the history of human immigration. The museum itself is stunning. Its metallic stair leads you all the way up to the rooftop, offering breathtaking views over the Rotterdam haven. Inside, the stories, photography, and art are beautifully curated with incredible attention to detail. The research behind the artworks and content is strong, making the whole journey not only informative but deeply emotional. It’s not something you rush through. Our visit took around 4 hours, and it was absolutely worth every moment. A powerful and moving experience that stays with you.

Don’t expect to learn much about the geopolitics or economics of migration. Here you will feel what it’s like to be a migrant. You’ll be immersed in the stories and lives of those who have been forced to migrate or simply went on an adventure. Absolutely fascinating and beautifully done.

Such a special museum in an incredible location! The exhibition on migration and immigrants feels more relevant and urgent with each passing day. The museum beautifully amplifies the voices of those often unheard or misunderstood, offering space for empathy and reflection. Beyond the exhibition, the building itself is an architectural gem. The old, industrial warehouse is combined with modern, organic features. Its striking staircase winds all the way up to a viewing platform, where you’re rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the Rotterdam skyline.

Came here to see the exhibition on migration and it was very inspiring. The art pieces and stories being told here were insightful and moving. The space itself is also very impressive with nice views over the city. Overall a very pleasant experience and would definitely recommend coming here to see the exhibition. Tickets can be bought online or at the desk.

The ‘Tornado’ staircase is absolutely fantastic and the Rotterdam skyline view even better. We went on a sunny sundaymorning. At 11 in the morning the Tornado staircase was still quiet. The staircase takes a central stage in the building and leads you to the top of the building and higher. The material is metal with a reflection like a mirror. I can’t describe it. Please see my photo’s. On top of the building the tornado staircase gives you a fantastic view on the skyscraper, Maas river and the Erasmus bridge. So beautiful. I think we stayed for an hour. Bring your camera, you can take great pictures. We bought the tickets before going on their website. We parked in the Felix I parking garage. Expensive but very convenient. We had coffee and a cinnamon bun on the first floor. It was ok. But the view is great. Fenix is a museum about migration, we also went to the photo exhibition on the ground floor. Powerful photo’s from the last 100 years showing the departure-, travel and the arrival phase of migration around the world. The photo’s are moving and insightful. Well worth a visit. Secret tip: Go for icecream at Granucci Gelato on the corner of the Fenix building (outside).
