Why So Many People Love Cougar Gold - Eater Seattle

"Cougar Gold is a white cheddar cheese made from cow’s milk sold in 30-ounce cans. Its texture changes with age, transforming from a creamy, firm cheese to one that’s crumblier the longer you wait. It continues aging in the can, and the older a can is, the more it’s prized. It’s sharp, bold, nutty, and exceptionally flavorful. It is manufactured entirely on the WSU campus by agriculture and food science students. The can helps to preserve and age the cheese without mold loss. Cougar Gold has a strong fan base, with 260,000 cans sold each year, primarily at Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe on the university campus and through online orders." - Molly Allen

Ferdinand’s is the quintessential small town creamery, however its following is anything BUT small town! Their cheese is nationally known and their OG Cougar Gold has a cult-like following! (It’s THAT good!). The store itself looks small and has not the best parking, but it does have a tasty variety of flavors on the menu and an observation room to the cheese making process. Feel free to run up to take a look or plan a field trip for something a little more formal! Friendly knowledgeable staff (love living in a college town!), please order from the store itself for cheese or else you’ll be paying way more in the surrounding stores!

Google
They make the cheese, and it’s all really good. The observation room is cool to watch them make the cheese, and the ice cream was really good. The prices were good too, and the staff was really nice. I got one that had chocolate and tiny peanut butter cups inside, which was delicious.

Best ice cream on the Eastside of Washington State. Home of the Cougs, WSU, at Pullman. This place is extremely popular in Palouse. They make ice cream and cheese from their cattle and it is run by the university food service department. Now, coming to the ice creams: they have some nice flavors and you can enjoy it as a scoop or in the waffle cones. You could also have them as a shake. The texture of the ice cream is so smooth and silky, wanting you to get another. The scoops are generous and the price very reasonable Then the next is their Cougar Gold Cheese (I know of a person who went to WSU just for Coug cheese). A little pricey but worth every bit. They also have some specialty cheese.

1st timer here! Had to get the famous cougar gold cheese. The staff was so helpful and kind. Got some cheese, ice cream, and their local honey from the WSU campus bees 🐝 🍯.

We arrived about ten minutes before closing, and I’m wondering if that’s the reason, but we received very poor service with a bad attitude. We ordered and paid for a pint but she only gave us a third of a pint.

Google
Ferdinand's is an iconic place in the Palouse. It's home to one of my favorite ice creams I've ever had. Their deciduous, perfectly creamy scoops are ginormous -- I forgot just how generous they are. Even for myself, an ice cream fanatic, I would have been content with one. Plus, the staff is always friendly and helpful with any questions.

TIPS: You need to pay for parking in their lot (see my photo for more info). I was able to pay using the website, without downloading the app. It was only 50 cents. :-) There's a single all-gender restroom inside the building to the left. They have an observation room (being cleaned when we visited) where you can sometimes watch them making cheese. No sorbet or vegan options were available. It's really nice that they run this ice cream (and cheese, and espresso drink) shop on campus. There are some tables inside, along with additional table seating outside (but without shade). Staff were super friendly and helpful with my order, except that the person trying to help me with the cheese kept telling me that it was impossible to tell me the weight of the gift box containing multiple cheese flavors, when all she needed to do was look at the label on the box, which wasn't visible from my side. But I digress.) As for the ice cream, honestly in my opinion the mouth feel is too creamy (yes there is a limit, for me anyway). Most of the flavors are fine (strawberry was very good) but some of the flavorings are overdone. For example, the apple pie flavor (I don't remember their name for it) is way too heavy on the cinnamon to the point where you can't taste the apple. BUT I didn't try any of the classic flavors, so maybe those would have been fine. We haven't tried the cheese yet, but we're looking forward to it. I ordered an espresso drink and Americano that were both excellent. This was a fun spot to visit for dessert while visiting Pullman.

Google
The ice cream here is amazing. I like how there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of options, but still enough. The peanut butter chocolate, huckleberry, and cookie dough flavors were super yummy. Also, the prices are CHEAP. It’s like almost $3 for two flavors!!

Yelp
Visiting my daughter to watch her playing club volleyball at WSU. I remembered Ferdinand's creamery on campus when I dropped her off as a freshmen and the ice cream and cheeses was still a great experience. So I texted her to buy me a pint of ice cream since the creamery is closed on weekends, except during special events. Leaving in the AM but get a late call reminding me of the ice cream she bought me! So even this late I could not pass on the opportunity and boy I was right! The ice cream is still rich & creamy and flavorful like I tasted a few years back. If you're visiting and get the opportunity to try Ferdinand's, I highly recommend it! *Hopefully I get another chance before my daughter graduates from WSU to try more flavors!

Yelp
Great little ice cream shop on campus at Washington State University. Heard about this through the grape vine and had to give a try. The ice cream operation, and it's production is done at the University. There's an observation area in the second floor where you can see the cheese manufacturing process. They sell both ice cream and cheese. It's a small shop with a half dozen tables and window seating. The service was good, quick and friendly. The ice cream was delicious! Rich and flavorful! We even bought a tin of cheese to take home. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
such a classic pullman spot! I came here when my brother graduated in December and their ice cream was delicious and so is the cheese.

Yelp
Awesome Ice cream, connected to the schools creamery. I dont have much more to say than that. It was delicious, priced well, and worth a visit if you are near campus. Parking is sparse but there is a ton of parking around the campus. Go get some delicious ice cream you will not be mad.

Yelp
Line was long but moved fast got 2 milkshakes and thought they were 10/10 coffee ice cream was great. Loved the ambiance !

Yelp
The most delicious banana shake I've ever had and pleasant service. I just wish they were open on the weekends. The theming is fun.
google avatar

Yelp
Staff here were friendly and helpful. The ice cream was delicious. A definite stop when I visit WSU Pullman'. Go with their recommendations but I am pretty sure all their ice cream are delicious.

Yelp
Cute ice cream shop located on Washington State University campus. We got there just before closing and so glad we made it. Some of the best ice cream we've ever had. Large servings and reasonably priced. Part of the proceeds go to help Food Service students at WSU.

Yelp
I went again over the weekend for graduation and it did not disappoint. This time, we got the Tin Lizzy and the blackberry. Both were delicious. The Tin Lizzy had a lot of caramel and was quite sweet due to that. The blackberry was so smooth and creamy. I don't remember it being a bright, fruity flavor (as some fruit ice creams may be), as the ice cream base really shone through instead and the blackberry complemented it. A really solid ice cream shoppe. We got cones this time and it was $2.88 each. The cones are not freshly made there. Same as last time, the servings were huge and one scoop could feed 2 people easy. Not pictured is some Viking cheese and hot pepper cheese I got. The snack packs were $9 with 7 servings according to the back of them and the big cans were $30. They had a variety of different cheeses. It almost makes me wish I lived closer or visited the area more often so I could try all the cheese and ice cream flavors.

Yelp
We always look forward to going to Ferdinand's on our visits to Pullman, WA. The staff is friendly and the ice cream is of superb quality - thick, creamy, and, in my humble opinion, better than what you would get at a high-end ice cream shop that charges 3x the price for a smaller portion. This brings up another point - the portion sizes are incredibly generous. I ordered a "single" scoop, which is the size of a softball. Ferdinand's offers an abundance of flavors - classics such as cookie dough and strawberry are scooped alongside more unique flavors like huckleberry twist and apple crisp. Regardless of the weather, I highly recommend making the trip to campus for some amazing ice cream!

Sally S.

Yelp
The ice cream was less tasty than I would have thought. The creamery in Tillamook is much better. Got 2 scoops and both of our 2nd scoops were much smaller (different people scooping). Chocolate PB was, by far, the best. Caramel cashew didn't taste like anything. Pricy curds, even though this is the source of the curds. NO FREE PARKING ANYWHERE ON CAMPUS.

Susan S.

Yelp
I wish they would extend the hours when the weather gets warm & sunny!! That's the only reason for one star- we need ICE CREAM when days get longer and temp is 60's or higher!!!

Manmir A.

Yelp
Ice cream was good. Service was prompt and ambiance was fitting. Several good ice cream spots in Pullman.

Quinn K.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The staff was very friendly, The price was really cheap, and the Vanilla Milkshake was incredible! Definitely will come back. Deserves more the 5 stars! Also try the smokey cheddar cheese which was excellent.

Yelp
My second time visiting Ferdinand's and, again, it didn't disappoint! Such yummy ice cream at fair prices. I love that they would do split scoops, and for $2.50 you will get a large serving. Will be back next time I visit the area.

Yelp
Cute lil ice cream shop hidden in the WSU campus! Has a unique retro vibe that makes you feel like you're on the set of Riverdale or Stranger Things. They have a nice selection of ice cream flavors with WSU themes (Apple Cup Crisp), the popular Huckleberry, and other classic flavors. Super reasonable prices, we got ice cream for three people for $10! Their cheese selection here is huge, too! I didn't know they had so many aside from their famous Cougar Gold (such as Sweet Basil, Dill Garlic,...). The more ya know!
google avatar

Tiegan W.

Yelp
I got the blackberry swirl ice cream and in my opinion it could use more blackberry in it since it's mixed with vanilla and that can overpower the blackberry flavor. I went around 3pm and they were experiencing a heavy rush, but the employees did their absolute best to take orders of those standing in line and get them their ice cream before they even paid. The shop was rather small with limited seating so the large rush made it hard to find a seat.
google avatar

Arnie B.

Yelp
Ice cream as delicious as the gelato I got in Italy. I got a scoop of huckleberry and a scoop of cougar tracks (chocolate swirls with peanut butter cups). Texture is very creamy, no sugary grit, and the flavors popped. Grant it, this was my breakfast, so there's that. Easy picnic tables out front. Delicious level = HIGH
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing Ice cream! This is some of the best I've cream ever. The biggest scoops and the least expensive.
google avatar

Mary E.

Yelp
Ferdinand's is a WSU staple; if you're around, you should definitely pick up some tasty Cougar Gold cheese & get a scoop of their amazing ice cream. On a hot, sunny day (or a cloudy, windy one), Ferdinand's is the perfect treat!!

Hockey M.

Yelp
Fabulous and ohhhh soooo yummy. Big scoops for reasonable price. Highly recommend!!!!!

Yelp
I finally made it to Ferdinand's during a recent trip to WSU and the ice cream was everything I had hoped it would be! Absolutely delicious! Unfortunately, my visit was spoiled by an older employee, that I believe was the manager. After scanning the menu, I approached the ice cream counter and that's where my happy mood took a dive. I won't go into detail, but the older man was rude and condescending to one of his student employees, who had done nothing to deserve being so berated. His behavior made my experience very uncomfortable. I know this is not the image WSU would want for their ice cream shop, so despite the wonderful ice cream, I am giving Ferdinand's only 3 stars. It's a clean, cute shop and the student employees were very pleasant, but the older manager spoiled it for me. He needs some training!

Yelp
Cool spot on the WSU campus for ice cream and cheese. And the price was amazing. We got two packs of cheese, two milkshakes and an ice cream sandwich, which they call a grabber, for $28. As far as the food goes, my mint chocolate chip grabber (a bunch of mint chocolate chip ice cream between two oatmeal cookies) was delicious! Would recommend and will get again. The cheeses I got were the ghost pepper cheddar and the garlic dill curd. Both of the cheese were high quality and the flavors were bold (I especially loved the garlic dill). The only thing keeping my experience from being a 5-star experience is the huckleberry milkshake. There wasn't enough huckleberry to it and the flavor fell flat. One of the people in our group who ordered a shake and, after one taste, didn't want to finish it. That said, don't let that keep you from the huckleberry ice cream. The huckleberry ice cream is really good... They should use it in the shakes... As far as the ambiance and service, it's a cool place. The style immediately reminded me of the Max from Saved By The Bell, so I very much appreciated that. They also have an observation level where you can watch them make the cheese, and I really enjoy watching cheese be made. The staff was incredible friendly and quick to help.
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
Ice cream. Cougar Gold cheese and all the other flavors. I haven't tried the drinks but I hear they are also delicious. Can't go wrong here!
google avatar

Nels B.

Yelp
The happy staff provide large, inexpensive portions. The menu has a lot of variety, beyond ice cream. As I recall, everything tastes great. If the day is hot and you'll order a cone, then plan to eat outdoors or get a bowl. The extremely large scoops may be difficult for a person to manage in a car, on a cone. The outdoor seating area and park lot are wise alternatives to redecorating an interior. Be smarter than I am, mind the schedule of open hours. I arrive at random intervals and the shoppe is open perhaps half the time. Parking is a puzzle. The CoViD protocols did not inspire confidence.
google avatar

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of the WSU campus this creamery has a wonderful selection of ice creams, shakes and the like to satisfy any sweet tooth on a hot summer day. Hot tip: They are open during home football games. Visit early before or after the game!
google avatar

Beau R.

Yelp
It was good ice cream and good cheese... but to be honest , in the years since that cheese was invented, during the last Wold Wars.. other ice cream shops in this century give ya a wooden spoon to try the ice cream out.. when I asked for a sample before my purchase ... it felt like the staff had just been dissed or something.. I thought colleges where about being progressive in the times. Not this ice cream stand.
google avatar

Adalberto R.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of Ice cream, and Ferdinand's ice cream is definitely a place for fellow ice cream lovers to visit. My favorite flavor is definitely Apple Cup Crisp, with the sweet caramel, the spice of cinnamon, and sometimes the little bits of apple that are hidden inside every scoop. They also sell official WSU cougar cheese (no it is not from cougar milk) but it might be a little too expensive for some people. They are closed on weekends so it is hard to bring family and friends who are visiting for the weekend to Ferdinand's to try the ice cream. If they opened for certain weekends like during home football game weekends that would be good. This is the place to treat yourself when you have finished a stressful exam after school and just feel happy.

Jackie C.

Yelp
You gotta try the huckleberry ice cream! The service is usually pretty fast and you get a great amount of ice cream for the price.
google avatar

Victoria G.

Yelp
Came here the day before my friend's graduation and we arrived at 3:35pm, and they close at 4:30pm. The line moved pretty quick, even though it stretched out by the street. They had so many flavors to offer and I'm a chocolate person and was debating between the Chocolate cookie dough or the Huckleberry Ripple, the flavor my friend said was soooko good. I tried a sample of the Chocolate Cookie Dough to get my chocolate fix, but decided to venture out for a different flavor. I LOVED the Huckleberry flavor!!! It was so creamy and it also had bits of huckleberry. Pros: - Lots of flavors to choose from - They also offer a variety of cheeses for purchase - line moved pretty fast - very affordable! A single scoop in a waffle cone was under $3!!! Cons: - i didn't see if they had any vegan flavors - i wish they had a menu outside the entrance in case of long lines like today

Yelp
Amazing ice cream and other dairy products! I personally love their hot pepper and original sharp cheddar. Their sharp cheddar is okay too ros famous and rightfully so. Side note, buying their cheese from the main store is tons cheaper than buying it elsewhere!
google avatar

Xichen J.

Yelp
This place is a must-visit for anyone coming to Pullman, WA. The prices are ridiculously cheap while the taste is amazingly good. This place is run by the WSU food science department so the quality of ice cream is fantastic. Be aware of their hours as the place closes early.
google avatar

Mona R.

Yelp
Anyone that goes to WSU or travels to Pullman knows that going to Ferdinand's is a must!!! When I went to school here, during summer I would walk to school and back and Ferdinand's was my stop twice a week. Their ice cream is so creamy and delicious. I've never tasted any ice cream close to theirs. So when I had to come back to Pullman for recruiting I had to stop here. I had the huckleberry ripple on a sugar cone. Just enough sweetness! Oh so good. I also bought two cans of cougar cheese because it's the best cheese ever! Of course I got the staple cougar gold and decided to give cougar fire a try too. A spicy version of cougar gold. Can't wait to make Mac and cheese with the cougar gold and some nice and spicy tuna melt with the fire one.

Mika S.

Yelp
This place is pretty bomb wish they had DoorDash or something because I would order it way more.

Shannon H.

Yelp
Love this place. Awesome ice cream!! Don't forget to get a tin of Cougar Gold cheese while you are there or maybe some sausage. Wish they had better hours so locals could support them but when you work the same hours they are open it's hard to get there. Forget going there in a Saturday game day. Once you have their ice cream you will be back for more
google avatar

Mason D.

Yelp
Easy and quick service, simply delectable ice cream made in the same building. Nice selection of ice cream, I personally ordered the chocolate cookie dough. We also purchased some cheese, but have yet to crack it open. It must be delicious though! Thanks Ferdinand's!
google avatar

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
What a great place. Homemade ice cream and cheese! Made on the WSU campus it's a delight. There is always a line but it moves fast. They sell their signature "Cougar Cheese" which comes in a large can oddly enough. The cheese is local only and a well guarded strain that has a pleasant unwieldy taste. The ice cream is smooth and they have about 20 flavors and make excellent shakes. It's a cool place to stop and bring home some cheese. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Junrui L.

Yelp
Really creamy and thick ice cream. Feeling so satisfied after getting a bowl. Their cheese is also famous. Definitely the best local store to shop dairy products:
google avatar

madison t.

Yelp
so good!!! went for the first time and loved it. you can also buy the ice cream in large containers to take back home and share!! highly recommend

Kali K.

Yelp
I've cream was really creamy and smooth. Minimal flavors but a good overall selection

Rachel B.

Yelp
I absolutely love Ferdinand's! I wish they had more flavor options maybe, but honestly I think the ones they do have are great! I am never disappointed when visiting!
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
This is a great stop if you happen to be in the Pullman area during the week or on one if the weekend days that they are open. There are about 14 flavors of ice cream and they also sell 'Grabber' ice cream sandwiches. All of the flavors we have tried are really, really good. There is a certain freshness about the ice cream that you only find in specialty ice cream shops. You can also purchase the whole array of the Cougar cheese products and at a more favorable price than what you will ever see in Spokane. This was a very busy place today and the staff couldn't have been more efficient or friendly. They worked the line quickly while still offering samples of both cheese and ice cream. Since you can't buy the ice cream in Spokane I would think that you may even consider making a day trip to Pullman. It would definitely be worth it.

Stephen L.

Yelp
Love that we have a local creamery very delicious ice cream, it is very smooth and very creamy also if you haven't tried the grabbers you gotta try them!
google avatar

Joanne K.

Yelp
The best icecream shop in Pullman! The quality is so good and the cheese they are selling is awesome! I wish they have longer operation hours for local people!
google avatar

Carl L.

Yelp
This place has great stuff. Excellent ice cream both in taste and variety. Prices are lower than other ice cream shops like Cold Stone etc. And Ferdinand's is way better. Just don't try and go within 3 hours of a football game.

Leah R.

Yelp
Super cheap and good ice cream. Definitely get the huckleberry if you get the chance. Cougar gold is also a classic
google avatar

Sheilah A.

Yelp
This place has amazing ice cream and is a must try if you are on the wsu campus! It's hidden at the end of Ferdinand lane and has meter parking right in front in case you aren't a student there.

Joan B.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever! Creamy & real ingredients. Softball size servings so I ordered 1 scoop. Try it on a waffle cone only $3.28.

Laura F.

Yelp
First stop on campus! It was very busy right before close due to move in week, but the staff was friendly and moved quickly. Plus we were shocked by how much ice cream we received for the price. Definitely would recommend stopping by and will be back to try the canned cheese.
