"NorCal is no stranger to exquisite doughnuts, but Santa Cruz has known what’s good since Ernest Ferrell opened the first Ferrell’s in 1949. This shop on Mission Street, not the first of the local outposts bearing the same name, is open 24 hours a day, meaning locals have gone to nab one of the 41 varieties before hitting the surf or the mountains for decades. Plus, a bear claw is only $3.50 — outrageous." - Dianne de Guzman, Paolo Bicchieri, Garrick Ramirez

You. Must. Have. The. Apple. Fritter..... Must! If you love donuts the way my family has for generations, then Ferrell's is our place. Open 24/7 with fresh, yummy, warm goodness that even a gluten-free foodie like myself can not resist.

We recently visited Ferrell’s Donuts on Mission Ave, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience! We tried the cronut, and it was epic—perfectly crispy on the outside with a soft, flaky interior that just melts in your mouth. We couldn't resist getting a variety of other donuts to take with us, and every single one was a hit. The donuts are not only delicious but also generously sized, making them a great value. On top of that, the service was exceptional. The staff was super friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed quickly and with a smile. This place is a gem, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone looking for top-notch donuts!

So nice! Great donuts, friendly employees, excellent location. Go here for the standard classic donuts like old fashioned and maple bars. Delicious! And open 24 hours!

Google
These donuts are really big. They're also so fresh and so good. My whole family enjoyed them! We will be back.

Do you like donuts like Homer Simpson? Come get your fill at Ferrell's Donuts!

Google
Lovely choice of tasty doughnuts at a great price. The girl behind the counter was very helpful and friendly. And their coffee tastes great as well. Easy to park up, with ample parking around the property. Rob recommends: Their maple syrup glaze doughnut

Google
Superb selection of freshly made donuts! All the flavors and they melt in your mouth, definitely a must stop when driving through. The employee working was super friendly and welcoming too.

Yelp
A fabulous array of some of the most scrumptious donuts in the gorgeous city of Santa Cruz. Jacob serving us was an absolute rockstar. Cheers!

Yelp
On the one hand, not very good donuts are still pretty good. On the other hand, stale donuts are very disappointing. That's Ferrell's: pretty good but very disappointing. Three visits over three months and none of the donuts are memorable. Twice they tasted day old. Maybe the problem is I've always showed up early afternoon and these are only fresh in the morning. Maybe. The coffee isn't good and there are five fantastic coffee shops within two blocks. They claim to have bagels but I've never seen any by early afternoon. And this location doesn't seem very clean. So what's good? The people. Everyone I've interacted with has been nice and a little apologetic.

Yelp
We came back from a beautiful walk along shark fin cove and were hungry for a quick snack and there it was Ferrells Donuts! We quickly pulled over since the vibrant neon sign caught our eye and was so inviting! We walked in and loved the pink and white colors paving our path! As soon as we walked in the employee was instantly soooooo friendly with a great big smile! Our food restrictions were a non issue as they quickly accommodated to our needs! We were eyeing all the donuts & the old fashioned donut immediately felt like the right choice! we saw chocolate and glazed and quickly the employee offered us maple old fashioned donut fresh from the kitchen! my mouth is literally watering as i write this! i took a beautiful glorious bite if the aromatic maple donut and was instantly transported to paradise by the beach! That donut was delectable and so peaceful and comforting! Should i just go back and get more? I will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
Homer Simpson, who i consider to be the king of donuts would not be able to change my mind about Ferrell's as it's probably the worst donuts I've ever had in my life. The inside of the bakery reminds me of a bathroom from the 50s when people were using tacky covered tiles for flooring giving it an old diner look and feel. Service was great, the cashier made some recommendations and was so patient and informative while i was ordering. I understand that this place is open 24/7. However, that is no excuse to serve stale old donuts to a customer. I aas so eager and excited to try this place out as they had Cronuts on the menu. I've had cronuts from places like Paris Baguette, which were phenomenal from the taste to texture. No clue who's making the cronuts for Mr. Ferrell. Because the Cronuts here are absolutely a nightmare. One bite and all i got was a chewy dry texture of an old croissant that needs to be put in the toaster to rejuvenate its original texture. Dry, chewy, and had Homer Simpson crying. The raised donuts are again, dry, chewy, and I'm pretty sure they were worst than the donuts at 7/11.... And that says something and which has me so confused on how this business remains operating.

Yelp
The perfect little donut shop was exactly what we hoped it would be, Amazing! Sweet Lady helped us pick some of our favorites. Adorable, cozy beach shop that seems almost of yesteryear. Best news, the donuts were perfect. Even hours later when we ate the remaining ones, they were still yummy.

Celie H.

Yelp
Get the traditional glazed donut! Delicious! We also tried the old fashioned, but the OG glaze was so fresh and fluffy.

Rachel H.

Yelp
Donuts are good - not like designer donuts but a step up from chains like Dunkin and Krispy Kreme. Service was friendly and helpful. Ambiance is definitely not it, so if you're looking somewhere to sit, I'd maybe go elsewhere.

Jeanine C.

Yelp
The owners are amazing, generous, and kind. I worked with them to host an event in honor of my nephew. Out of the goodness of their hearts, they donated the donuts. On top of that, the donuts here are excellent. And the staff are super friendly and efficient. Please support them.

Kelly G.

Yelp
Best donuts in town. These are your classic pink box kinda donuts done right. They're fresh and exactly what you want in a donut. I go for a classic sprinkled donut or sometimes their blueberry donut. They also have ham and cheese croissants that taste just like the ones I'd get in Newport during my college years. They have wifi and plenty of seating as well. I believe they have a $5 minimum to use a credit card and given how cheap their donuts are you might want to bring cash!

Christopher K.

Yelp
I saw this place on the edge of town coming into Santa Cruz from the north. I drove past it but drove back from our hotel a day later and I'm glad I did. The donuts here are larger than what you'll normally find at most donut shops. But don't think they're only making than huge to get you to buy them. The quality and taste of these are on par with the best I ever had and I would like to think of myself as a donut connoisseur. The donuts here are classic. Don't expect to find ones that you see at some of those shops that claim to have gourmet donuts with all sorts of flavored colorful toppings but on a cookie cutter mediocre donut. This place doesn't do that crap. Ferrell's does it right. I recommend this place to anyone visiting Santa Cruz. They're one of the best food places in the whole city.

Brian R.

Yelp
I love donuts. These were some good donuts. Really big fan of maple. I kinda wish I had some more now.

Jacquelyn M.

Yelp
Thought they tasted stale. Definitely not good at all. The only good one that was good was a blueberry one, and that was the only fresh one they had available.

L C.

Yelp
We love coming here! It has been our go-to donut shop for years. The donuts are HUDGE and always super fresh and yummy. There is a wide variety of flavors to choose from so there is a little something for everyone. On top of this, the people working behind the counter are always super friendly and go above and beyond with their service. You can tell that this is a family operated store. I very much recommend people make a stop here for a sweet treat. You will not be disappointed, and the prices are very reasonable (which can be increasingly hard to find in a tourist area like Santa Cruz). Must stop place to visit for sure!

Jacob T.

Yelp
Really good Solid Donut spot! Was staying at the Mission Inn across the street. Walked here in the morning to have donuts with my morning coffee. Donuts were solid! Had the Chocolate Old Fashioned, and Glazed Cronut! Forgot to photo the Glazed Cronut. Nothing over the top, just good, old school donuts! Clutch spot!

Daniel Z.

Yelp
Just popped in here the other day and was a very happy customer. The cronut is good but too sweet (like a krispy Kreme, so if you like that you'll LOVE this.). My test of a good donut place is their apple fritter. These were perfect. Fluffy and moist inside with a crispy glazed exterior. I also had the glazed old fashioned which was pleasantly enormous and very satisfying. With only 4 donuts (all MASSIVE) I took a LOT home for the wife.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Donuts lack a bit of taste. They are good size donut but lack in topping/taste. Server was kind and helpful. Older donut shop with a little ant problem this time of year. For it being the go to dont shop I'd disagree as only one side of the shop was in service.

John Y.

Yelp
Sorry new Ferrell's for the two star, but even though the logo, the ambience, and the service are nice, the donuts (the star of the show) just aren't the same. I just had the classic glazed donut and I was disappointed because even though the glaze is the same, the donut doesn't rise back up after each bite anymore. After two bites, the donut compresses into a dense, chewy mass. The cronut, despite being made differently, had the same mouth-feel as the glazed. It just wasn't bouncy and crispy like it used to be. Just like the glazed: after a couple bites it gets dense and chewy. I hope the other Ferrell's still has the original, good stuff :(

Yesenia G.

Yelp
I loved this donut shop! The selection was huge! Any donut you could possibly crave they had! The service was great, staff was so nice and we had the longest conversation with them, very welcoming people! The ambiance was nice, lots of seating. We will most definitely be returning!

Sam R.

Yelp
Under new ownership and different bakers. Toys along the top are gone and the walls painted white. New menus going to be installed soon. The old fashion and glazed raise are good.

Mercy B.

Yelp
Late night after a attending a performance at Moe's Alley, we had a craving for ice cream. Previous reviews said that they had Marianne's Ice Cream - NOT. We drove up to the storefront and noticed that there were few cars in the parking lot, but there were customers inside. Three giggly, loud girls were choosing donuts from the case and their shrill laughter was deafening. The counter person was trying to hold his composure as he attended to these girls and thankfully, they purchased their donuts and left. We noticed that only half the cases were filled with donuts. When we asked about the ice cream - the counter person was very apologetic as he explained that they were under new ownership and the new owners decided to no longer offer ice cream. We were very disappointed. So, we ordered a few donuts to take home. On the bright side, they did have cronuts (croissant donuts). We had the maple covered cronuts and they were pretty yummy and satisfied our sugar craving...but damn, a scoop of ice cream would have been nice.

Yelp
Ferrell's is one of those Westside SC places that you hope never changes. Friendly staff behind the counter, lots of choices and some new varieties.

Greg H.

Yelp
I went to pick up breakfast for Shana and myself from a donut place we saw coming in and the reviews were very good. There was a line but it went fast, seems everyone there besides myself were regulars as the lady working knew them and she them. The donut options are many including donut holes and the donuts are large and they have bagels as well. Shana got an old fashioned and an eclair that the filled at the time of order with whip cream or custard. That was amazing. They had coffee you could make there, no refills though. They were fast, friendly, and very good. I don't eat at many donut places but this is in top 3 easy.

Christine H.

Yelp
My favorite doughnut place of all time. Legit, the best doughnuts I've had. It might be a little more expensive than a normal Safeway doughnut, but trust me the price is worth it

Kali R.

Yelp
I come to Ferrell's every time I'm visiting Santa Cruz! Donuts are fresh and yummy, everything is super reasonably priced, and everyone is so friendly!

Tom K.

Yelp
Health hazard!! This place is gross and dirty. There is a sewer issue. Used to love this place...it's different now. There has been a puddle in the parking lot for weeks. It smells pretty gross. I saw an employee use his hands to handle food. The doughnuts were not fresh. One or maybe 2 days old.. I asked if they were made in the morning I was told yes! I then saw that same employee pull doughnuts off a rack that had the previous days date on it. When I asked if he was selling me day old doughnuts at full price he was snotty and said "we've never been busier and if I don't like it...go somewhere else" I am writing this because I pay a premium to support local businesses and this place was gross. The doughnuts that were fresh were heavy. They were kinds tasty (mostly just sweet) but, my experience was really bad and I'm considering calling the health department. I plan on taking the advice of this lousy employee and going somewhere else.

Memo M.

Yelp
Great donuts and coffee plus they are open until I think 2 am in the morning.

Rachel M.

Yelp
Ferrell's was the best 24 hour donut/ice cream spot that would usually save me and my fellow UCSC bananaslugs from hangovers. I was always so grateful they were always open at any hour. The key is to ask upon arrival is which donuts were just made. Luckily, when we visited, the donut holes were really . I love love love donut holes and can eat them forever. My friend and I ordered a dozen each and my hand was already in the bag before paying. I also enjoy the powdered, glazed, chocolate and blueberry donuts. The server is usually super nice another must-do for SC treats!

Cody D.

Yelp
I love this place best donuts ever! I have gone here my whole life and my parents also went there for there whole life.

Yelp
Devin is the best 10/10 we traveled from NJ and came across this lovely shop. Devin was amazing help and hard worker. If I was his boss I would get him a raise!!!!!!! The Food was amazing 10/10

Jane V.

Yelp
We kept passing by this place as we made our way around Santa Cruz. On our way home we stopped for gas and ice cream... originally we were headed to Marianne's on Ocean Street but noticed Ferrell's sold Marianne's Ice Cream. They don't sell Ube but they DO sell Macapuno or baby coconut ice cream. My friend had that while I had Banana Almond Fudge. Both were YUMMY!! Fun fact: Ferrell's has a flavor called "1020" and the address to Marianne's is 1020 Ocean.

Glenmarie J.

Yelp
1st of all THANK YOU FOR BEING OPEN DURING THIS PANDEMIC. I came in around 1030pm, but before heading over to this location I did call before going because almost 90% of all places have special hours due to Covid. On yelp this place is 24/7 but they do close at 11pm. Place had PLENTY of parking, street and lot. They did have have MASK REQUIREMENTS for both guest and employees. Prices were exceptional. But this place NEEDS TO GET A DEEP CLEANING. There were gnats EVERYWHERE. The tables were dusty (they were put up due to no dine in). Their ice cream case/ display, YUCKKKKK! I couldn't take a picture since my phone was in the car but it was disgusting.

Elaine L.

Yelp
This business has been in Santa Cruz for many many years. The beauty of Ferrell's,is that you get the same quality as always. You can count the donuts as being fresh and wonderful. The staff there, are very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. Good going, all.

Christopher E.

Yelp
Told my girl about this amazing donut place for weeks. We drive 3 hours to go grab a few donuts. We pull up to a 24 hour donut place an ln it was closed. l was completely devastated. Never have I heard of a 24 hour place closing without posting not only on their site or anywhere. I was so disappointed with the whole day after this happen. I would like to make sure this place post if they are closing early in the future. We had a car full of people expecting to have some amazing donuts. I'm only rating it 2 stars due to the fact of false advertising an having to travels so far to get an empty trip.! ...

Dylan S.

Yelp
Came in after a day at the beach. Great assortment of beautiful, HUGE donuts. I mean - these are big donuts. Bigger than in any bakery I've been to (NYC, SF, etc.), and everything looked great. We got the chocolate custard, apple cinnamon, and a bag of donut holes. Everything was great. One star off just because the booths needed a bit of cleaning. We just ate in the car as we drove home. Perhaps they had a big rush before us - not sure. We enjoyed the donuts a lot and the lady at the counter was very nice.

Stacie K.

Yelp
I am admittedly quite snobby when it comes to donuts. These check ALL the boxes. Crunch on the outside and moist on the inside (try the buttermilk maple glazed!), lots is filling (try the apple bear claw - huge, and the Bismarck- custard filled). Didn't get to try the crumb but she says it is one of their best sellers. EASY 5 star!!!!

Kevin K.

Yelp
Was getting ready to drive back to The City from our Boardwalk weekend and decided to get some ice cream before hitting the road. I saw that Ferrells was open 24 hrs and had decent reviews. We wandered in and looked at the offerings of Marianne's ice cream flavors. All the flavors were good and we each got a waffle cone to boot. The thing that I noticed most was the size of the scoops along with the waffle cone versus the extremely reasonable price. I know that the scoop size is YMMV but the price including waffle cone was really refreshing especially in a small mom n pop-type store. It's very important that the public supports these types of establishments over the the chains, especially since things have lightened up some pandemic-wise. When i return to the area I will make it a point to go back for ice cream, if not a donut. You should too.

Andy L.

Yelp
The Ferrell's Donuts here is better than the other one. Lucy, the worker was very friendly. The half dozen glazed donuts weren't sticky and was good. The chocolate donut was way bigger than I thought and definitely worth it. This place is a nice place for a quick stop by.

noah a.

Yelp
Open until 9pm weekdays and 10pm weekends right now. Donuts are $1.50-2.50, ice cream $4-6 Kinda dive bar ambiance, wish they had some outdoor seating. But can't go wrong with the food

Wyatt D.

Yelp
i love this place, since i was a little kid and my parents were a little kid they will go down to Ferrals to get the best quality donughts you can find in Californa. Never had a better donught anywhere else in the whole world than here. i will recomond the "Vanilla french culler."

Peter B.

Yelp
In the early 70's my roomate and I would walk up from Erret Circle through the silent neighborhood to Ferrell's Donuts in the middle of the night / early morning and Mr. Ferrell would tell us a nun joke. He made no secret of what kind of food he offered. Fat, starch, and sugar--it is what it is. Always good, and fresh, at 4 am. at the near empty wrap-around bar under the fluorescent lights. Many great memories. Close friends and places long gone.

Brian H.

Yelp
I RARELY give one star. Bums having some kind of sword fighting tournament in the parking lot. Walk inside and they have like one or two trays of donuts. A homeless person emerges from the back and asks us "Hi, can I help you?" YOU FUCKING WORK HERE BRO? Dude looked like a straight bum. Plus my custard filled donut was stale as fuck and tasted like Copenhagen.

Kien N.

Yelp
Best donuts in town !!! Update phone number for ordering 831-457-2760, Now Open 24/7,

Spire S.

Yelp
If you like sweet doughnuts, this is your place. The dough is too sweet for me. I like my sugar and fillings to be sweet. They shouldn't have to compete with the dough itself. The textures were fluffy and dense at the same time. I'll keep looking for a doughnut place that makes them more to my taste.

Anivesh B.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday evening en route to Davenport beach. Donuts were pretty good, not the best I've had but enough to satisfy my sugar cravings. They could've been a little softer, although the glazing was slick. There was a bit of a wait but nothing too bad. 7/10 would go back again!

Robert B.

Yelp
I'm a donut snob. Or maybe a connoisseur. Either way, I know good donuts. I've had some of the best in the country. They are my kryptonite. Ferrell's is awesome. Not the best I've ever had. But seriously solid. Their cinnamon rolls are huge, the glazed are fluffy, and the best claws are the size of a Kodiak grizzly's paw (big). Everything is fresh and delicious. But one of the best (and quite unique to the area) are the buttermilk bars. Wow! These are kind of like an only fashioned, craggy and crispy, but with a unique, rich taste that is heavenly. And the glazed coating is perfect. The staff is always friendly and the service is lightning fast. Definitely my go to place when I'm in town!

Jeremy D.

Yelp
We were on the hunt for the ultimate doughnut for National Doughnut Day (first Friday in June). In our journeys we had stopped at 2 doughnut shops in Santa Cruz only to find they had really sad looking doughnuts and...they had no idea that it was national doughnut day. We quickly found Ferrell's on Mission St and found ourselves surrounded by like minded doughnut lovers. The manager had prepared and there were 4 extra racks of doughnuts in the back ready to go. The National Doughnut Day disaster of 2017 was averted. This place was money! Doughnuts were super fluffy and tasted fresh. The selection was huge, seriously, they had all the flavors. We filled our bags with treats...mission complete!

Sam K.

Yelp
What can I say, cheap donuts that are super good! Definitely recommend if you're picking up for a dozen for a office birthday or for breakfast quickly on the way to work. A PLETHORA of donut variety's that all looked delicious as well as some croissant sandwiches that looked good. Really nice staff too even early in the AM.

C R.

Yelp
Wow amazing donuts. So fresh and big. I would definitely recommend them. They look super fresh, large and tasty. Very high quality. A+

Kate E.

Yelp
The best donuts ever. I have yet to find a place as good as Ferrell's. Wish they could still be open 24hrs!

Sunil R.

Yelp
I love Ferrell's which is a locally owned chain. They serve great old fashioned Donuts and are open 24 hrs just in case you get a case of the munchies in the middle of the night. This time I got the buttermilk bar and got some ice cream too. Don't judge me!
