Yelp
My wife and I spent four days in Los Olivos starting Valentine's Day. We had been looking forward to coming to Los Olivos and staying at the Fess Parker Inn for quite some time. Fess Parker is a great winery, and his family's resort is top notch.
Here are my thoughts:
1. The Rooms: Quite beautiful and elegant. Very luxurious and well appointed. Evening turn down service, a complimentary bottle of wine in your room at check-in. The rooms are top notch, and they have great wi-fi throughout the property. Each room has a fireplace (or at least I'm pretty sure each room does, you'd better double check), and a Blu-Ray DVD player. The front desk has a pretty good collection of free borrowing DVDs for you to watch while unwinding after a fun day.
2. The Restaurant: The in-house restaurant is the Bear and Star. The food at this restaurant is excellent. It is an elegant modern ranch style restaurant, with two fireplaces, and of course an excellent wine list. During your stay at the Fess Parker, you will enjoy that your breakfast is included here each day as part of your stay. This is not your typical business hotel continental breakfast spread, but rather, a gourmet made to order breakfast that is truly excellent. Their Huevos Rancheros were excellent, as well as the Wagyu hash, and the salmon toast. The breakfast dining staff are superb (We miss you, Suze!). HOT TIP: The restaurant has a couple of long tables that look like natural lumber. They are attractive tables, but the tables are way too low for comfortable dining. We sat at one of these tables, before asking to be moved to a normal table. For four days we watched other diners struggle at these tables. Don't make that mistake. These tables are fine for sitting and having drinks and appetizers, but the wrong choice for dining.
3. The Service. We did run into a couple of problems during our stay. This is not a criticism, because mistakes can happen whenever and where ever you travel. The reason for mentioning it is because I would like to point out that the hotel management was quite responsive to our concerns, and they worked to make things right as much as possible. The front desk manager (Sandra) is very personable and helpful, and frankly, so are all of the staff at the hotel. Speaking with them, we found that a number of them have been with the hotel for years, a few since they were in their mid-teens. This says a lot about the hotel, i.e., that they value their staff as people, which in turn results in staff who take pride in their hotel and service.
4. The Town: Los Olivos is a really great place to visit for a few days' getaway. Its proximity to Los Angeles makes it a really easy place to escape the madness. Let's face it, if you come to Los Olivos, you are probably coming for the wine tasting. So one last thing, and it is not a small thing. When we checked in, we received certificates for free tastings at the Fess Parker Winery (a short drive away), and the Epiphany tasting room (right in Los Olivos). This is about a $40 value per person, and they both have great wines, as well as a great vibe. When you visit Epiphany, ask for Latoya, who is a delightful and knowledgeable tasting hostess. Also while in town, check out Tessa Marie's tasting room. She is a really neat young lady (a Fess Parker granddaughter) with a great Sangiovese. Also stop in for a tasting at Ka'ena for a great Grenache, where the wine maker is a really friendly local boy from Hawaii.
5. Summary: Definitely put Los Olivos on your list for your next mini-vacation. And when you make that happen, definitely choose Fess Parker Inn as your headquarters. It's a romantic and elegant place with a great restaurant, great rooms, and great people. We had no regrets, and we will certainly return.
