The Best Restaurants Along California’s Central Coast, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Field Day Coffee made excellent use of a former auto repair shop. The owners turned one garage into a bright and cheery cafe while the adjacent wine bar, Field Day Bottle Shop, operates throughout the day. Seating is plentiful, flavorful beans are used for hearty lattes and cappuccinos, baked goods are solid, and it remains one of SLO’s coolest hangouts. Check the bottle shop’s Instagram page to see if any food pop-ups are on the schedule." - Mona Holmes

Great spot for a coffee and pastry to start your day. Bright and airy space. In nice weather the garage doors open up to let in fresh air. Staff were friendly.

Checked out Field Day Coffee with a friend today. Space was utilized well as a coffee shop. Open and airy throughout the inside portion of the coffee shop. Ample outdoor seat which was a bonus, and just as the sun came out on our visit. Coffee was delicious and made to order correctly on the first time. I shared a Brown Butter cookie with my friend and it was Delicious. Pricing is fare and coffee tasted much better than other big brand coffee chains. Definitely recommend field day coffee if your visiting SLO. 👍

As a flight attendant, I love to explore coffee spots all over the world, and I absolutely love the San Luis Obispo layover. This was my first visit, and I’ll definitely be coming back—it’s already a favorite. The California charm and vibe are unbeatable, and I really appreciate the overall aesthetic. There's something special about sipping coffee from a real mug and taking the time to sit and enjoy it. My cappuccino was fantastic—perfectly crafted.

Google
Great coffee spot here in SLO. Cool building that is very hippie where plants are actually finding their way to burrow through the walls. Staff was friendly, but a little slow for a busy work day. Coffee was tasty, so I will be back.

Google
Atmosphere was awesome! Totally would come back if the coffee was good. They do make their own syrups, but my latte was a cup of milk. Barely drank half of it. Girl taking my order was extremely rude and cold after I asked a few questions. In other reviews, her attitude and lack of kindness has been described as well. Seems to be a reoccurring issue. Not thrilled and disappointed I spent $ here.

Google
Paper cups are never my preference when having coffee inside a coffee shop. I prefer real mugs & requested it. 1 was made in a real mug (thank you) and the other drink in a plastic to-go cup. Limited seating today & very limited electrical outlets for a laptop or cell phone. Hard wood seats = drink up & go. Friendly staff.

Google
The cutest coffee shop in SLO , next to a thrift store and wine bar. The seating and outdoor space is lovely - very California coastal and casual vibes. Latte art is on point, pastries look delicious and overall love the aesthetics. We stopped by the wine bar next door and went shopping at the thrift store which was a perfect way to spending our Sunday morning.

Google
So excited for a very coffee forward shop here!! I'm originally from SLO but live out of state now and have been in coffee for 15 years. While they don't roast they bring in amazing roasters from all over and present the coffee in a beautiful manner by showcasing it and paying beautiful homage to it. Definitely one of the best cappuccino's I've ever had, great service, cute atmosphere and decor. Will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
One of our favorite coffee spots all of SLO proper, bar none. Their homemade smoked sea salt maple syrup is one of the better latte syrups I've had We also love heading here for their once a week Bagel Sundays (they're incredible and significantly better than HoBags - get there early) and for the nice selection of pastries they carry. Field Day is right up there with Scout/Tiny Cafe/Twenty South/Lucy's as one of the very best coffee shops in the county. While they make great coffee - the location is a bit closer to CP campus than I'd ideally prefer which can make parking and spacing within their location a bit tricky. Not a coffee shop that's as conducive to working at like Nautical Bean, Kruzeberg, and Coastal Peaks are. Still a gem in this county and a solid 5 stars for the amazing coffee and bites. They also have a general store + bottle shop by the same owners to the left and right of this parcel.

Yelp
One of my favorites in slo! I love the garage aesthetic of Field Day and the coffee is delicious as well! There are tables inside to do work and chat with friends. I usually go early in the morning so it's not too busy. I enjoy their mocha latte but I hear the maple latte is also great. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their coffees but I find the matcha not as great. Can't wait to try more of their drinks!

Yelp
I love how open this cafe is and the vibes! The baristas and all the staff are so cool and friendly! The array of pastries and drinks is amazing. It all looks absolutely delicious! We tried the iced latte with Oatmilk & honey cinnamon syrup and it was to die for. The matcha is perfect and not super sweet. I love it! A must stop cafe in SLO!

Yelp
Great customer service. Inside and outside ambiance is welcoming and fun. Especially on a warm summer day. I'm a huge fan of cappuccinos and field day has one of the best in SLO. Have not tried any food items yet but the drinks are fantastic.

Yelp
This spot is a really nice space. Chai latte here is nice and spicy, but for some reason tastes a bit watery to me despite using regular milk. Croissants are really good - flaky and crisp.

Yelp
coffee is fine, atmosphere really shines. it comes across as "friendly scandinavian" with a warm version of an otherwise cold type of design. perfect to work a little when the sun is out.

Yelp
Local coffee roasters, bakery and wine shop. Our first stop at SLO~ COFFEE! Very cute cafe with modern vibes. Simple decor with plenty of space to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. There's seating inside and outside. They have their own merchandise too! We got quite a few coffees for the whole family. Service was quick and friendly. I am very picky about my coffee and their coffee is solid. Enjoyed my cup of coffee before heading to Lure for lunch :)

Yelp
Very cute coffee shop in SLO but the parking lot is a nightmare. I would honestly park further and just walk. I got an iced latte sweetened with simple syrup 1/2 sweet and coffee was WAY sweet. Felt more like 150% sweetness. Coffee was mediocre in my opinion. I could have definitely used an extra shot of espresso. Though the ambiance is very chill and slow, the service was also on the chill side. Expect a bit of a wait even with no line. Overall, nothing special and won't go out of my way to visit.

Yelp
In a cool college town, this is one of the best coffee spots around. Its got a cool open setting with plenty of seating inside and out. The line moves quick and drinks come out relatively fast. I got a mocha and it was bomb, just the right amount of chocolate and espresso flavor. I also tried the coffee cake and a spinach/feta/sundried tomato scone. I would go back just for that coffee cake! Its a good spot to meet up with friends or just start your day in downtown SLO. Located at the top of Monterey St., it is walking distance to all of the shops and stops in downtown SLO. As a Cal Poly alum, I wish this place was there when I was in school!

Yelp
Went here for the first time today and it was so cute! Tried the iced honey cinnamon latte and it was scrumptious, will definitely be going back (was even better w/ 2 added stevias!) The workers are also super sweet, made my drink super quick, and i loved the open seating layout of the place

Yelp
Best coffee shop in the central coast?? Good vibes, good space, good drinks, good service, cool shop attached, good outdoor & indoor space... We were just visiting SLO for a few days, and we ended up coming by here a few times because we loved it. I had a drip coffee one day and an espresso another time. Drip coffee definitely got the job done. My wife got a matcha & it was great. Good place to get work done or play cards or hang with a friend. Also, the shop next door has great clothes & very kind+friendly service!

Yelp
First time here and got a pour over with their in house roasted beans and it was one of the best pour overs I've had. Straight fire. Talking to the owner, they only recently started brewing their own beans. I will be coming back for more.

Yelp
Stopped by to get coffee, and a croissant. The Cortado was excellent - hot, flavorful, and served with tasteful art. Staff came across as friendly, efficient and paying attention to details, which I definitely appreciated. The place is unique in its set up, and rather convenient as well - lots of parking right in front of the cafe, lots of seating as well. Well done, Field Day, will definitely return. Hope you all enjoy this spot.

Yelp
Such a beautiful location to stop by if you're in SLO or passing through like we were. It's an open garage concept with a bar top and seats inside to work from. Lots of beautiful natural light which is amazing. Pretty cool that there was a vintage clothing shop next door as well. They had cute stationary and home goods you could purchase in the coffee shop as well. Enjoyed my coffee very much! Perfect sweetness for me but if you like things on the more sweet end, you can always ask to adjust. The staff did so super easily and were really nice about it for my friend.

Yelp
I visited Field Day Coffee for the first time this morning around 9am. It has a lot of seating options for inside or outside. It is dog friendly. The design of this cafe has a very open feel. It was busy this morning, but we beat the crowd. It was very busy around 9:30am and there was a line to order drinks and food. The menu offers a variety of coffee drinks and some pasties. They also had avocado toast, yogurt with granola, and a few sandwiches. We decided to order hot mochas, a plain bagel with cream cheese, the savory scone, and the cinnamon coffee cake. The mocha was exactly how I like my mochas. It was chocolately but not overly sweet so that I could still taste the coffee. I recommend getting the coffee to stay because their latte art is beautiful! This mocha was 5/5 for me. The bagel was soft on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside. It comes with plenty of cream cheese and was great. The savory scone had great flavor with the feta cheese, spinach and sun dried tomatoes. It was a little dry, but typical for a scone. My favorite food item that we ate was the cinnamon coffee cake. The cake was not dry. The cinnamon sugar crumble on top added a nice flavor and texture to the cake. I would get this cinnamon coffee cake again. This coffee shop is cute and has great coffee and food. I would recommend coming here and look forward to visiting again!

Yelp
I was visiting from out of town and stopped by this cute little coffee shop for an afternoon pick me up. The drinks were quickly made! I had an iced matcha with almond milk and sweetened with vanilla that hit the spot and tried my friend's latte as well. Both were great. I was hoping to try some baked goods but they only had 2 choices left by the time we got there so make sure to head there earlier in the day if you want a bigger selection. Definitely will be back next time I'm visiting!

Yelp
Got delicious coffee and excellent, friendly service at this cafe over the weekend. The woman who took my order was so kind and welcoming, and everything came out perfect and delicious! The space is also super cute with seemingly plenty of seating. Definitely recommend

Yelp
Such a cute vibe with great matcha! I love their honey cinnamon syrup with the matcha, I had asked if it was ceremonial grade and they said yes so i recommend trying it with that syrup.

Yelp
Good coffee, service and the baked goods looked amazing!Have to try those next time!Short 5 minute walk from our hotel(Quality Suites downtown SLO)

Yelp
Love the ambiance of this place but I definitely don't come here for the drinks. Food 5/5: I love the prosciutto sandwich they have and it is a must if you are looking for a quick bite. It's sweet and savory with brie and apricot jam I believe! They also make a mean chocolate chip cookie :) Drinks 2/5: As a matcha enthusiast, I was quite disappointed. Even after asking for extra honey, my matcha was insanely flavorless and powdery. I've tried the matcha on two different visits and had the same results. Ambience 4/5: Love the seats they have but sometimes it gets extremely windy. I was studying here for a few hours once and one of the workers decided to open the other garage door. Everyone around me immediately put on their jackets and started to have their papers flying. Wish they would maybe ask around or read the room a little better. The staff are extremely nice though other than the fact! Wish they also had more outlets since this is such a popular space for college students to study. Overall will continue to come here but will continue to explore their other drinks!

Yelp
Back again for breakfast before we head out of town. Fantastic experience once again. The baristas are super nice, drinks are perfect and the avocado toast was superb! The rosemary blueberry scone was also so good! I'm convinced that you can't go wrong with anything here. Love the ambiance as well with the open floor plan.

Yelp
Very cool and modern coffee place. There's about 15 tables inside and a handful outside (all were taken at 10:30 am on a Tuesday). Service was fast and friendly. The coffee menu is fairly traditional, so don't expect a wide variety of options; we had an iced latte and iced mocha, nothing really stood out from any other coffee places we've tried. The olive oil loaf was good, very moist and flavorful. If you're looking for coffee options (like a lavender latte or any sugar free syrups) this place is not for you.

Francis B.

Yelp
Phenomenal expresso - Brazilian med roast last week!! Try a Macchiato, traditional, not Starbucks!! Great espresso, taste it straight- outstanding.

Yelp
My mind was blown away by the food and the chai latte I had here. The avocado toast is to die for, especially the freshly made and toasted bread that comes with it. My chai latte was so delish, hard to match some of the places back home in LA. On our way out of SLO, I stopped in to grab some of their bagels to take back and we ate them the next day and I couldn't believe how good they were!! I wish I had purchased more to bring home - these bagels are definitely something to seek out if you're in the area. The staff here are plenty and very kind/accommodating which is such a nice change from the attitudes I see regularly in places like this back home. I wish the seating was a little more cozy but its practical and it works. Anytime I am passing through or stopping in SLO, I have to come here to grab some goodies and drinks. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
They were busy when we came on a Friday morning. Luckily, we were able to find a spot in the parking lot right out front. There was a short line to order as well as a 10 minute wait to get my coffee. I got the vanilla latte with oat milk. It was slightly on the sweeter side for my preference but a nice morning treat to start the weekend. Overall, a great coffee shop to catch up with friends for a while or grab and go. I'll be back when I'm in the area!

Yelp
What a horrible experience, high school girls gossiping burnt my shot and burnt my milk. What a shame. and they have the audacity to charge me $17. What a joke.
google avatar

Yelp
This cafe was super cute!! we got the orange olive oil loaf (so moist and delicious) same with the vegan banana bread i couldn't even tell it was vegan!! got an iced matcha latte add vanilla and it was really good!!

Yelp
Returning to Field Day Coffee after relocating from San Luis Obispo was a delightful experience. The coffee and staff, as always, were fantastic--engaging and knowledgeable. The variety of offerings for both drinks and beans caught my attention, and I thoroughly enjoyed a delicious cappuccino featuring their single origin espresso. I couldn't resist taking home a bag of beans to try in my own coffee bar. The atmosphere remains warm and inviting, ensuring I'll eagerly return whenever I'm in the area.

Yelp
Awesome, fun place with really good food, as well as coffee. Try the granola yogurt bowl with fresh fruit.

Yelp
I've been driving up the 101 semi-regularly and recently found Field Day. It's a great coffee shop that makes very good drinks :) So far, I've had the Espresso (served w/ soda water), a Flat White & Iced Latte and all of them have been excellent! This is a nice sized shop with big roll up doors and plenty of seating inside. I think the building used to be a garage or mechanics shop. But my favorite spot is the patio seating in front, it's so peaceful and makes a great place for a pit stop if you're driving thru town. I just really enjoy it so much in the morning or afternoon :) The baristas are friendly and very talented making great drinks quickly. Inside and out they are very clean with a minimalist style that matches the building. They are located close to the 101 so it's a perfect place for a quick caffeine fix if you are driving by. There is a parking lot and nearby free street parking.

Yelp
Good coffee and matcha. The sandwiches were pretty good but basic. The lemon olive oil cake was KILLER. It was the star of breakfast by a long shot. It was quick and friendly. There were lots of (well behaved) dogs. It's all outside but covered.
google avatar

Yelp
Service and ambiance! The perfect spot to do some work or just hang out with some friends! The staff was really nice!

Yelp
My fav coffee spot. Always friendly service! Lattes are top notch! Vibe is great with students and locals just hangin out.

Yelp
The service and all that was great! The coffee was okay. I couldn't really taste the maple!
google avatar

Yelp
This is our absolute favorite coffee and tea destination. They make their own Chai tea from their own special recipe. The other amazing drink is their Hojicha Latte. Hojicha is a robust roasted green tea that has deeper tones, for the tea aficionados. We had their Blueberry Coffee Cake, Maple Chai bar and a cookie, all made in house. I love the ambiance, the high ceilings and open multi-level seating areas. They also have their own parking lot! So convenient.
google avatar

Sanjeet S.

Yelp
The vibes were a good time. Spacious, and decent amount of seating. The hojicha latte and matcha latte tasted like sweet milk. Scout's matcha items also tasted like sweet milk but a little bit more flavor then field day's. The coffee is delicious though, I am just not a personal fan of any of their matcha items I have tried here, would just give it an ok/could be better rating for those specific items. Also tried matcha lemonade, its fine. It was pretty to look at before it was mixed. I think would cater to others maybe. But it very much tasted like two separate flavors of matcha and lemonade. I think the lemonade tasted good on its own, the matcha just took away from it personally.

Yelp
LOVE! this place has been so much fun to see grow. As just a stand alone cart to now a fun cafe. The milk temp is always spot on and we love the ambiance of the seating here
google avatar

Ruby O.

Yelp
Interesting place for coffee. Roll up doors allow lots of light and an airy feel. Very relaxed setting. So relaxed I didn't realize my drink was ready. No one called out my drink or my name. Once I realized it I grabbed and tasted my Matcha Latte with Almond milk it was tasty nice and cold too. The scone was a bit hard. My husband iced coffee was good. All in all I would come again.
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
The simple aesthetic of FDC drew me in and the offerings made it a fave. The vegan banana bread is the best ....along with their iced latte is a great start to the day
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to bring kids. Love the deck area for them to play at. Cool to see options from other roasters on the coast Dune was one of them. Had great coffees and morning buns. Can't go wrong with a good coffee here. It has good ambiance and decor.
google avatar

Conner M.

Yelp
Incredible coffee shop in SLO! Drip coffee was served at the perfect temp in the perfect mug. Matcha latte was almost as pretty as her. Friendly all female staff. Beautiful interior. Only better coffee shop is Sally Loo's Wholesome Cafe!
google avatar

Elaine M.

Yelp
Two cappuccinos and a coconut and coffee muffin. Both delicious. Coffee was perfectly foamed. Muffin was light ang flavorful.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my new favorite coffee spots in SLO! Latte and pastries were so yummy!! Love the space to study and get some work done! Baristas were super welcoming and would highly recommend!

Yelp
Not sure how many espresso shots their iced lattes contain (there is only one size) but we couldn't really taste the coffee. I liked the cinnamon in mine but if it wasn't for that- it was flavorless. Location is nice with simple decor and plenty of seating...just wished the coffee had more of a presence in our drinks. Service was straightforward- no complaints but also nothing to rave about.

Benjamin C.

Yelp
Ciara behind the bar made me a bomb ass Gibraltar and Brooke brought me an amazing bagel and it made my morning. Everyone is very kind and the atmosphere is always vibrant with good tunes. No doubt my favorite third location and coffee joint in SLO!
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Found this spot while visiting SLO and it was about a 10 min walk from our hotel. Super cute decor with indoor/outdoor feeling due to their garage wall that allows you to get all that fresh air. This looks like the place to study too. A fair amount of people had their laptops out and were working. I think they could have more seating but the both times we went, it wasn't filled at capacity. We tried their matcha lemonade and their special winter latte. Both were delicious. The matcha latte was a refreshing combo. Not too bitter from the matcha and not too sour from the lemonade. Great beverage to take on a walk. The next morning we got the winter latte with oat milk. It was very similar to a dirty chai but had a more earthy taste from the tea. In the morning they had some pastries which also looked yummy. They have a parking lot right in front which makes parking a breeze. They ask if you want your drink here or to go when you order as well. The service was great. Everyone is so kind and efficient.

Yelp
Great coffee and lovely staff! The vanilla latte with oak milk was tasty and it came with a perfect heart art work.

Yelp
Exploring more through the SLO coffee shops and gaining a regular feel for the places...Field Day remains consistent in their service, drinks and pastries. After more exploration, I place them at number one! Drinks: they are amazing no matter the weather or beverage mood you are in. The matcha lemonade was fabulous, no artificial taste, and potent matcha. Was unsure about tasting it, but once I did, I was glad I did. This will remain a top drink for me now. Iced tea with lemonade was refreshing on a hot day and great choice when wasn't feeling a milk option. Plus took my own mason jar and they were generous in their portion size. Also, the good ole hot latte with raw sugar on top so simple and delectable. Last but not least, the chai is one of the best locally. I have high chai expectations because of Field Day Environment: Their WiFi is dependable and easy to use their charging plugs. SLO coffee shops and their WiFi routers struggle so much, but Field Day will have working WiFi. Service: without a doubt, will always receive great service! Compare: Field Day is superior to Skippers, Downtown Scouts, Kin and Kreuzberg. If you are on this side of town go to Field Day. Scouts on Foothill is the next best choice.
