10 Best Houston Bars & Restaurants for Mexican Food & Margaritas | Eater

"If you want a place that sticks with the standards and does them all well, Fiesta en Guadalajara fits the bill. Don’t expect much beyond well-done, classic Tex-Mex cuisine here. You can get your fill of enchiladas, chips and salsa (try the salsa verde), fajitas, and more, all served in giant portions. The potent margaritas are worth a visit alone. (Best of all: If you want to add Margarita Mondays to your calendar, Fiesta en Guadalajara serves up mini versions of the drink for just $2 — talk about starting the week off right.)" - Marcy Franklin

This was a cool little spot just north of Downtown. There's plenty of parking when you arrive. The staff welcomed us immediately. They were nice. The food was decent but a bit salty. It took a long time for the food to arrive, but we did have a large group. We might come back to see if we get a different waiter. Our waiter was terrible. Drinks were never refilled. Dirty plates weren't taken away. It was a mess.

Google
Great experience all around. I would just maybe suggest adding security in the parking lot even on slow days. Food, atmosphere, and service were great!

Kim Santibanez

Google
It was a very cool and vibrant restaurant, food came out quick and delicious! Highly recommend for a family dinner or brunch with the girls.

First time: We got a table in the party room. The DJ was playing good music, a little bit of everything. The food was very tasty and delicious. The shrimp in the cocktail was fresh. It did not taste like frozen shrimp . I ordered a piña colada but it was too sweet for me. The service was good, our waiter was always on the go. We kept calling me back to our but it was a busy night.

Google
Fiesta en Guadalajara is our to go to for Mexican Food. Hands down, the best Mexican food in Houston, and also very affordable. The portions are a bit excessive, the food is sooo tasty and the the chips and salsa just keep on coming! The breakfast, on the other hand, needs a little help and also variety, but it’s very tasty. I’ve attached photos of breakfast.

Getting a table was fast. Waiting on a server was slow. Their margaritas are good. The food is okay. Nachos come with melted cheese that seemed to go in the microwave before they bring it out. Salsa was bland. Their green salsa is horrible. Fajitas mixed plate needed more seasoning. The rice and beans were good. Flour tortillas were decent.

Google
It was good not so bad as some reviews say. It Is pricey, they charge for green salsa. Drinks are really good. The server didn't care much for my husband's birthday. We there to celebrate and like she didn't care. But as soon as you walk in the older lady's are really nice I wish one of them were our server. Very welcoming and even said thank you our server didn't. Short lady, not so skinny. But anyway next time we will not be seating we're she's working. Margaritas 🍹 are really good and strong.

Google
What a very cool and sprawling restaurant. Kinda hard to find over on the East side but plenty of parking. The Tampiquena ,a reference dish, was fabulous. The fajita was tender, well spiced, no gristle. But the real revelation was the sopapillas, going back for those. Mille feuille thick and dusted with cinnamon they were the best I've ever had.

Yelp
I feel like this is what a Mexican restaurant should be! The salsa was hot and freshly made with big chunks of onion, chips were hot and fresh as well. We ordered the large guacamole and it also had fresh ingredients. We split the ribeye fajitas (served whole like a typical ribeye, or sliced like Fajitas) with the bacon wrapped shrimp and Both were yummy! Huge patio, will be coming back
google avatar

Haley L.

Yelp
Delicious WITH an oasis of a patio?! Inside expect a fun and loud atmosphere but outside is relaxing and so nice during good weather with all the pretty plants growing and getting to listen to the water fountain while sipping on a margarita (loved the skinny!) Service was extremely welcoming and made us feel right at home and comfortable. We usually get to bring home leftovers after a Tex-mex dinner but this was so yummy it was the exception and not a bite was left!
google avatar

Yelp
Walked in to have dinner and left the place deaf, thanks to the loud-ass mariachis, not sure why Mexican restaurants think that they have to blast Mexican music all night long. Theotihuican is the place to eat on Irvington!!!
google avatar

Jazmin M.

Yelp
Location: Irvington Staff: friendly and always helpful Price:average Seating: indoor and outdoor Payment: both cash and plastic Parking: lots This has been a place I have been coming for several year and people are always super nice and helpful. Food is always good and so are drinks .

Yelp
We always come here on the weekends for the soup or for special occasions. We have been coming here over 25 years and we love it.

Joana S.

Yelp
Place wasn't busy and we waited over 30 minutes for someone to come to our table after being sat. Checked with the hostess after 15 mins, she assured someone would come but never did.

Yelp
This evening me and my family came to eat. As we were sitting there, a table next to us got scared and we looked to see what was going on, there was a RAT RUNNING through the restaurant! We told the waiter what we all had seen. She did not seem bothered or concerned about it , it was like if it was normal for this to happen ... management ever came over to apologize, NOTHING. We definitely will not be coming back here again.

Kain R.

Yelp
Well mi first time here ! And is good tho I mean as a Mexican I tried many enchiladas verdes ! But this one are good ! And the service is ok! It looks like she don't want to speak Spanish with me lol and she talk Spanish with her coworkers it make me feel like ugh? But anyway ! Ambiences it ok calm and quiet!

Yelp
After an unpleasant visit several years ago we have avoided this restaurant. Last week we decided to give it another try, but won't bother to return again. Certainly the most disappointing Mexican food we have been served in any Houston restaurant. No complaints about service which was pleasant, but this place is in desperate need of a solid cook/chef/kitchen supervisor. Salsa has the consistency of water with some onions & chili floating in it. Refried beans are a soupy mush that require a spoon to eat & have nothing in common with the refritos served by other restaurants. Nachos arrived on a platter that was "floating" in 1/4 inch of liquid that we had to pour off into a saucer. The kitchen obviously fails to drain the liquid from the ground meat & tomatoes that are dumped on top of the sloppy & unappetizing mess. Would be hard pressed to believe the guacamole isn't squeezed from a plastic bag & the ground meat in all 4 entree dishes was basically flavorless. No one in our group could taste any tequila in the house margaritas so we asked the server to find out what tequila was being used in their margaritas? We could see the server ask the bartender, but he merely shrugged his shoulders as if he had zero clue which pretty much underscored the lack of tequila taste. Asked 3 times about pricing of the "Happy Hour" margaritas that are listed on the restaurant's website, printed on the menus & appear in a sign above the bar, but was told there was NO Happy Hour margaritas at 4:00PM on a Wednesday. Really? Pricing at this place remains some of the very highest we have encountered at a neighborhood Mexican restaurant, which may be why there were only 5 other cars in their huge parking lot on the day we visited.

Yelp
This place is as so much fun! I was there on a Friday night, they had a live band. The food was really good and the drinks were delicious. The cantarito is a must try. The service was a little slow but it was understanding as they were extremely busy. I got there at 8pm and had to pay $10 to park

James S.

Yelp
The service and quality of food and drinks here are top tier. Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Houston. Huge parking lot to handle large crowds. Fun atmosphere with live music and at home feel. Will definitely be back and will recommend to friends of family. Mmm mmm mmm can't wait to be back!

Guido R.

Yelp
Great food. Great service! This place always makes sure you get the best service. Food comes out hot, variety of dishes! Always make sure to get the Margaritta as they are one of the best in Houston

Travis C.

Yelp
This place is great!! We had great service and it has some fantastic authentic Mexican food!!

Ginger M.

Yelp
I love it the place is just wonderful the people there are wonderful the food is wonderful you don't have to wait a long time you're in and out the drinks are wonderful it is just a good place I would eat there every day if I could
google avatar

Jan M.

Yelp
Slow service and the food is average. I ordered the fish tacos and the fish was way too crispy and didn't get any type of sauce to go with it.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Highly recommend this become a regular spot like it has been for us!! My mother is from Mexico and I grew up eating Authentic home cooked food so I love discovering restaurants that make us feel close to home. Every dish has been delicious and the service truly wonderful.

Ittybitty 1.

Yelp
Basic food for the price spent $200 and the service was slow the restaurant was not even busy will not go back for the simple food and price. Spanish flower which is right down the street is way better with reasonable prices you get your money's worth for sure.

John M.

Yelp
Been there several times, recently with a large group. The restaurant has a good ambiance , the wait staff was kind enough to drop a screen and project the Astros game. Food is always good however a friend ordered the shrimp with corn and potato....I would not recommend their shrimp
google avatar

Eloy A.

Yelp
Food was not good at all. Very basic white washed Mexican food. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
google avatar

Hector T.

Yelp
Food is great , but waitress are just plain slow and don't care for customer service.
google avatar

Phil T.

Yelp
Let's start with the positives. There are lots of parking spots, the margaritas are tasty and not too sweet, and he chips and salsa is quality. I don't eat meat so my options were limited and I made the mistake of getting the Spinach and Mushroom enchiladas. DO NOT make this same mistake. They were gross. It wasn't that they just weren't good, I can deal with mediocre. These spinach and mushroom enchiladas were disgusting. I'll go back to give them another shot. But I will not be ordering the spinach and mushroom enchiladas, and I suggest you avoid them as well.
google avatar

Joseline G.

Yelp
The food and the ambiance here is pretty awesome, however, the parking situation here is a nightmare and when the parking lot is full you have to pay for Valet which I believe is unfair. I was able to find parking after a while, but this was a frustrating experience. My family and I went on a Friday night and sat in the area where live music and DJ plays and it was pretty cool, we dance and had such a fun time. The parrillada was pretty amazing, it had a mixture of beef, chicken and shrimp fajitas. The beef fajita was cooked perfectly to a medium temperature and it was very tender. I definitely recommend this place if you want to have fun birthday dinner or family gathering.

Yelp
Started with drinks and queso flameado Saturday night. They were busy but service was great. The queso flameado comes out plated just like every other restaurant, but then they prepare it tableside. They turn it into these amazing little cheese tacos wrapped in warm flour tortillas from heaven. Highly recommended. The fresh diced tomatoes and lettuce helps balance out the cheese. Ask for the salsa verde, it's amazing. The regular salsa that comes with the chips is good too. I was with a group and they ordered parrillas to share, I'm not sure of the names. One of them came with grilled chicken, fajita, shrimp, and quail, all of which was delicious. Cooked just right, not tough, seasoned well. The other had sliced steak of some kind (a little tough but still good), bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp with cheese and jalapeños, AMAZING, might have been more on there too, I don't remember. The rice and beans were good. FYI they have valet parking and a private event area of some sort or club area to one of the sides when you walk in. Not 100% sure what it was.

Maria Z.

Yelp
My husband and I recently discovered this place. We have tried many different meals and they have all been delicious, staff is very welcoming and you get great service.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
I have been coming here since I was a teenager and service has always been good up until tonight. They sat us in the palapa side and we waited for a good 15 min and no one ever came to get our order or even address that we were there. No waters, no chips and salsa, NADA! The food and drinks are good BUT the service sucked tonight.

Texas J.

Yelp
Fresh tasty food with great service! I ordered late for my mother and they filled the request with care as they would if this was dine-in.

Emily P.

Yelp
First time here, they give you chips and red salsa which is actually pretty good however if you want green salsa it's $2. I got the Shrimp Botana & I didn't like it at all. The shrimp are big but the seasoning they put on it smells/tastes gross. My mom got a fajita Cobb salad & she enjoyed it.
google avatar

Paula T.

Yelp
We recently moved into the area and wanted to find our weekly Mexican spot and this place is it! The food is delicious, the service is great and we haven't been disappointed once. We bring our friends and family here all the time. Highly recommend!

Juan B.

Yelp
Friendly service, food is very good and they do have good skinny margaritas. I had a huge quesadilla and chiles toreados and that quesadilla was really stuffed with cheese. The atmosphere is good too.
google avatar

Nora M.

Yelp
Parking sucks! They have valid parking & they take up half of the parking spaces. If they want valid parking they should park the valid cars arcoss the street. The parking lot should be for customers that do NOT want valid parking. CRAZY valid parking in North Side...really STUPID!!!!! Valid parking is ONLY on Friday & Saturday . Once again the PARKING SUCKS!!!!! Another thing the Karaoke guy must be deaf. The music is so LOUD you can't even hear each other talking. Food is great BUT valid parking SUCKS!
google avatar

Luna Q.

Yelp
Had a great tome with friends. We were on the music side of place. Our waiter was awesome! We only had drinks. We wanted to enjoy the music. We had a great time. Music was great and drinks are great. Must try Paloma. It's delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has some good food. There are a few restaurants in the area that serve decent Mexican dishes and this is my second favorite. We stopped by for a late lunch. They were not that busy, but seemed to be a little unorganized. Our food came fairly fast, but we had to ask for drink refills a few times.

John F.

Yelp
Very disappointing. Food was mediocre (wife's Fish Tacos were Tasteless and my Cheeses Enchiladas were coolish). But the absolutely WORST thing was the Totally Abysmal Service. We kept looking for our waitress to order more bean dip, extra napkins and some limes. Nada, zip, zilch. Talking about a lazy waitress! I would avoid this place.
google avatar

Yadira B.

Yelp
I have been going here for years (15+ years) and never had any issues. Until recently that I went with my family of 4. The waiter was super rude and very lazy. He messed up or drinks and our orders. Not to mention that when it was time to pay he took the tab with the card for way longer than usual and I got charged twice. I didn't think to check my bank account until the next day. The moment I found out I took screen shots. Knowing after working in the bank industry for many years I waitied until during the week to make sure the charge wasn't processed however it never fell off my account and ended up processing. I then decided to call and speak to someone and the guy that answered was extremely rude and Instead of putting me on hold like any normal person. He just held the phone next to him and told his manager "esta vieja dice que según le cobramos de más" for this if you who don't know what that means, he is basically saying in a very tacky u professional manner that this women is claiming we dog les charged insinuating that I'm lying. I was like excuse me I'm still on the phone and I need to talk to your manager. And he said "cálmate no es para tanto" aka chill don't make a big deal. I then spoke to the manager and she asked me to wait a few days. So I mention I have waited a whole week by now. So I told her that I had already and explained who helped me and she says oh yeah we fired him we knew he was no good I'll look Into it. She says in their end there wasn't a double charge but on mine there was. She said I could come back and she would give me $75. I was so disappointed that I will never ever step foot there. I felt so disrespected in all aspects. I hate writing reviews like these but just be aware.

Yelp
This incident happened 5 years ago and it's still bothers me till this day so I thought it worth sharing. If not but the only place where I felt directly discriminated. According to the waitress this was the policy, so I don't know if it has changed since. I wanted to treat my self to a drink. Asked to be seated on the patio. They allow me to sit in the patio. I place put my drink order with the waitress. She then says she has to take my ID and have it held and once my bill was paid it would be returned. I was really confused. I asked is this just for alcohol beverages? She said no. I handed over my ID. At this point I'm still very confused, as I have never been to a establishment that had this policy. She brings my beverage and I'm just still uncomfortable. There were to parties as well who were also outside. I felt the need to ask them they had their ID taken. They replied "no, mijo but i think it's because we look older" which still contradicts the waitress statement. At this point I feel like I'm being discriminated. I had to look at the clothes that i had just to make sure I didn't like some sort of bum. I was well dressed in casual clothing. If you are Black or Afro Latino take your business elsewhere or do not go by yourself. This is not to throw the race card just to simply to share my experience and hope this doesn't continue at this establishment. I have been several times before but never by myself. Unfortunately that was the last time I went I have not take my money or referred any other of my friends to Fiesta Guadalajara. I hope they have change their policy since. Again this was a shock and disappoint to me, I never thought I would ever feel directly discriminated.

Yelp
Our Uber driver suggested this place while visiting Houston & let me tell you !!! The food was amazing b ! Bet authentic tasting Mexican food ! The drinks were strong & so tasty. I will definitely be coming back for more

Yelp
Guadalajara, Guadalajara! I will love you past manana! For many years I have come here as a child and now as mother I still come here with children of my own. My kids love their spicy salsa, creamy queso, sizzling fajitas as mommy has a good ol' margarita. Weekday nights are so much fun, they have a separate place with a dance floor which is perfect for parents and kids to go and dance with the cool Latin beats! (However children are technically not allowed, but they are willing to make exceptions). The service is always great, servers are on top of us making sure that we have all our needs full filled. Yes this place is a little pricier than most restaurants near the area but it is all worth it, the food is always great, the ambiance is fun, and they have valet parking on weekends too!
google avatar

Jon B.

Yelp
I've been eating at this Northside Tex Mex restaurant for many years and it is definitely an intriguing place which makes it sooo Northside and therefore unique. I give them a 4 star based on their food, location, and ambiance. Food is very decent, location excellent, price somewhat high. The parking is a "forced valet" as I like to say especially at peak times. They are usually very packed on weekend evenings. It's strangely a nice place to go on a date to drink & eat & people watch. Plus they have a nice, big menu. There are sports on the TV's and the Bar is usually very active and there are always big groups. Sometimes there are party groups that stay to the "club side" of the restaurant that keep the place pumping. The service is usually so-so to good.

Yelp
Great place. Good food. Service was great our server was awesome, didnt get her name but she had green eyes. Recommended. Will definitely be back. The flan was delicious. Didnt get to see the mariachis hopefully next time.

Kimberly P.

Yelp
Drinks aren't that great and a bit overpriced considering how they taste. Food is very mediocre. You can find a way better spot in Houston for tex mex food.

diana c.

Yelp
this place is magical, really feels like you are in mexico, busy, bustling, awesome wait staff, legendary mango margarita, only regret it was a dreary day and we weren't able to sit on patio. i got beef enchiladas with chili gravy and my companion got beef tacos with amazing beans and avacado salad. it was just perfect, can't wait to go again. they are also all prepped for valentine's day. warm salsa, great chips, most likely made there.

Alicia M.

Yelp
Dropped food. Got our order wrong. Chips tasted nasty and stale. Wouldn't recommend at all!
google avatar

Ant-knee R.

Yelp
Great food. Ordered the Ixtapa Mixta (chicken, beef, shrimp) fajita. Miguel Q. was a very good server with beautiful eyes. The sights of the diners tonight very interesting. Go for the food, stay for the people watching value.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
A must try! This isn't a Tex-Mex! It's actually Mexican! Pros: food, drinks, fresh tortilla (corn&flour) and parking. Cons: none
google avatar

Marjorie M.

Yelp
This place is good Mexican food - come hecho en casa. Mmmmmm. The brown enchiladas are amazing. Fresh lime juice margaritas are not sugary. The roasted chicken is one of the best in town. I see come comments here about over priced - totally disagree. A half roasted chicken for $13. Come on. This is one-of my regular spots.

Don M.

Yelp
Found that they were open and being one our favorite food places, we came to see if they were open and they had just opened at noon today/ Tuesday! Special mention to the Wait staff and management! Our waiter was an ex staff member but came out to help their friends and past employer! Now the five star mention! The full menu was available and their was the same great consistency in quality of food and same friendly wait staff. Thanks so much for the extra mile!

Yelp
This place is a Houston Icon, a must if you are in the Houston area, the Margaritas are hard and strong, service is super, I had the #45 is the Texas Combo. Double thumbs up!!
google avatar

C. M.

Yelp
It was super loud while I was trying to eat my dinner, my order was not what I ordered, the waitress gave me someone else's tab & argued with me about my order even though she wrote my order down. I specifically S-P-E-L-L-E-D my name out to her & she still managed to pronounce my name wrong!!! Really? You speak Spanish!!! But of course, will no lights on, how could she see her chicken scratches on her notepad!!! Then, when my order finally arrived (1/2 an hour later) I asked " SHREDDED CHICKEN FLAUTAS?", and she said " YES". WRONG!!! They weren't shredded chicken flautas, they were fajita chicken flautas. HUGE difference! FINALLY, it was time to pay! Good! I was finally getting reading to get out of there, and my card didn't go through because their system doesn't have a machine for cards with chips in it. To top things off, she took forever to bring my card back. They dimmed the lights, to the extent that I couldn't see what I was eating. It was the most horrible restaurant experience of my life, I'm never going back & I'm making sure everyone know not to go either.

Yelp
It had been years since I've visited this establishment and was deeply saddened by the quality of food and change in menu items. Chips and salsa: Aguas Frescas: How can you identify as a Mexican restaurant and not have aguas frescas? Not even horchata!? Although the presentation of the food was good, the taste was not. Met a group of 18 on a Sunday at 1pm. We made reservations and were seated in the live music room (none while we were there) but were told we had to be out by 3pm. WTF? Drink orders were placed, along with "appetizers" We ordered what USED to be one of our favorites, "Camarón Botana" as a starter and wow, it was gross. I immediately smelt something off, but thought it was probably the sauce the shrimp were soaked in. The size of the shrimp in comparison to my previous plates, were T I N Y. They were overcooked as well. As others tried the shrimps, they said the same thing... They were fishy. Leaving us wondering if they served us rancid shrimp. We also ordered a parrillada for two (more like 1) and the food wasn't even sizzling hot. The quail were overcooked as well. Others in the party has flautas, enchiladas and salad. This restaurant was once so vibrant and full of entertainment and now, it's as sad as a grey sky. They have deals and specials on certain days and I'm wondering if it's to bring a crowd back. Needless to say, I would not be one of those.
