The 15 Best Wineries in the Texas Hill Country - Eater Austin

"Conveniently located in downtown Fredericksburg, this is a great stop for those spending a weekend in town. The rustic, relaxed patio space is great for those looking for less pomp and circumstance, and the wines are consistently well-made and enjoyable. There are both regular tastings and food and wine pairings available, and the winery hosts live music most long weekends." - Tom Thornton

Love!!! The lady who took care of us was a gem! I tried the Home Sweet Home & it was beautiful!!! She let us try a few others and I did like some of those as well, but they didn’t reel me in like the Home Sweet Home bottle did! Big thanks to the lady for helping me find a wine I finally love. I am so so picky and she definitely helped so much! She gave us this booklet & it shows you all the wines they have, she’ll mark off what you try as you can pay for tastings if you go past the three free tastings, and all of the wines have descriptions of their flavorings & tastes! If you go, definitely try the Southern Sparkle!! It’s one of their popular sparkling wines & it is so dang good! I almost bought it that very day!

Abigail at Fiesta Winery was most personable and professional. It’s obvious she enjoys and loves her job. She made our visit so much fun. Thank you, Abigail. You’re the BEST.

Coryn Blanton

Google
Abigail was awesome! She made our tasting experience so easy and amazing. She brought upbeat vibes and made such good conversation! The wine selection here is fantastic and you can’t go wrong with a sweet wine. I will definitely be back here next time I’m in town!

Google
Abigail was amazing! Very engaging and knowledgeable regarding the wines. We enjoyed her company so much that we went 3 times in 1 day!!! Definitely will go in to see her on our next trip. Thank you, Kathy Bates (lol)

Google
Went with my hobbies and enjoyed this lovely spot! Abigail was absolutely amazing, loved our conversations and definitely informative on her wines. Recommend for every to stop by and check out this lovely place! Thanks Fiesta Winery for an excellent experience! We'll be back!!

Google
The wine was good however the service was OK. The lady seemed very unenthusiastic to serve us, however there is no one else in the winery to be served so it just left a bad taste in our mouths. Recommend the wine not so much the service

Google
Went there for a wine tasting as we heard it had some great wines. Our server was Glena Alise. She was fantastic, knew her wines and made the wine tasting an exciting experience. I will definitely go there the next time I go to Fredericksburg. All of the wines were really good and priced reasonable. We went on a Thursday, so we were pretty much the only one's wine tasting so that was really great.

Google
Loved the girls here! We all did a wine tasting and definitely purchased a few bottles. I completely forgot their names, but they were so friendly and informative, we did enjoy them Being interactive! We also purchased some frozen drinks to go for our walk.

Yelp
Walk in here already and ask for Abigail who rolls out the red carpet with smiles and pours and stories. Abigail works magic with her one-person show extravaganza. Ask for a sip tasting and then the pour happens. Bring friends. Chill and relax and share stories and laughs. "Let the wild rumpus start!" says you. The sweet to dry wines and bubbles are all great. ¡Salud!

Yelp
Stopped in during our stroll on Main Street and they have alot of little knickknacks. There is a store in the back that had some clothing, jewelry, and hair accessories. We didn't do any tastings here but I definitely left with some stickers. The store is very open and bright also took some good pictures with the different signage. The service was good for the short amount of time we were there.

Yelp
Stopped in at Fiesta winery after the teal/Tiffany blue (everything) lured me in (lol). It is my favorite color afterall. There was a bit of a crowd so I browsed around! Right when you walk in there's the wine tasting area and winery merch but way in the back there's also a super cute boutique! If you've never been to Fredericksburg, you will learn when you visit that they have the best shops/shopping experience! Fritztown is wine country but I come mostly for the shopping lol Anyhow, I scored on a few things, one being; the cutest German shepherd sticker for my hubby since he loves them so much! I'm glad I stopped in! Staff is so nice and helpful!

Yelp
10 out of 10! The lady who assisted us was very helpful! She asked us what we liked and what she recommended to each of us. Loved the experience. Cousin bought a lot of bottles. I got 2 hehe There is a variety of sweet, dry and semi sweet. The vibe was perfect for us!
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
The atmosphere here is nice and there is a boutique in the back. It is right in the middle of Main Street so easy to pop in for a visit. The wines were not my favorite as they all seemed to be a little too sweet for my taste. It was still overall a good experience just not sure if I personally would go back but if you like sweet wines this is the place for you!

Yelp
Five stars for a downtown tasting room? Yes. Why? Wide open, dog friendly, and had a full selection of their wines for tastings, glasses, bottles or cold slushes. We shared a tasting of six wines, the dogs got to cool off (and they had dog treats!), and we got pointers for their winery on 290 for later. Bonus: 100% Texas-grown grapes.
google avatar

Maryesther D.

Yelp
Yes, absolutely a winery to visit. The little town of Fredericksburg has many wineries to visit.

Yelp
Nice for a quick girls day out! We didn't have any food so I can't help with that, however this place allowed us to gather and have a few giggles together as we taste good wine. I wish we would've had a chance to hear the live music, but maybe perhaps we were there too early Hopefully, we'll get to experience that next ...
google avatar

Angela N.

Yelp
Abigail is a girls's girl!!! She helped me decide on what drinks to purchase, she gave recommendations for food, and helped us with questions we had as tourists! The winery itself had a long list of choices including 2 types of frozen margaritas. The wines are displayed along the back wall. The bar is open and clean. Abigail gave the best customer service! I would definitely stop in and have a drink!
google avatar

Aimee G.

Yelp
The vibe was cute and I loved the outdoor feel! Service was great! Maybe I'll go back if I'm sober because I think I made the mistake of ordering a mimosa here when I had been drinking wine all morning.

Yelp
I came to this location a few weekends ago with a friend. We stopped in our way out of this quaint little town. I walked in and went to the counter and was greeted by a staff member who I ordered a glass of vino to go from. We exchanged witty banter about the fact that we both lived in tourist towns. I also purchased a snapback because er'body who knows me knows I love a good snapback. The vino was light and freshening and I was pleased with the legs of the vino. #supportlocal

Yelp
The wines were very good. I wasn't impressed with the lady who was helping me. She wasn't exactly friendly. I'd like to go to the actual winery next time.

Mahala A.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this winery. Unfortunately, I was unable to get into the winery but an extremely kind employee came outside with me and helped me enjoy the winery outside. I bought 3 bottles of fantastic wine! I am definitely going to be a return customer due to the kindness of the lady who took the time to help me enjoy the winery experience!

Yelp
Very disappointed in this location! We have had great experiences in Marble Falls & the 290 locations. The lack of having a restroom available to paying customers definitely cost them our business last weekend. Along with probably having a new customer. We were actually bringing a friend in to share your wines with since we're already club members. We couldn't believe a place that serves wine would not have a restroom. Luckily it wasn't for myself at the time, as I probably couldn't have made the walk down to the public RR much less even find it.
google avatar

Samantha R.

Yelp
I absolutely love this winery we went to the one on 290. Let's start with the way they greeted you has you entered, It was like they were waiting for you, so off to a wine tasting section we went. Our wine goddess ( what else do you call someone who brings you wine and pours it) was great and really knew the wines . I am a red wine girl and the hubby prefers dessert and port. Well o tasted a lot , feeling pretty good right now. Hubby did the dessert wines and ended up buying a few has did I. I bought a few bottles myself and got a glass of the rhinestone cowgirl. Which is a Malbec and pinot Grigio. It was sweet but not overly sweet. So I went to buy another glass why we sat in the court yard listening to music and ended up says oh well buy the bottle. I will say the staff made this memorable for me. They had fun with the wine tasting the genuine love of the job showed through.
google avatar

Josh R.

Yelp
Came here for a wine tasting. My tasting associate, Gay, was amazing!!! The wines are really good, but the Happy Trails peach wine was my favorite! You get a free wine glass when you do a tasting, and they have this great deal where the tasting is free if you end up purchasing 3 or more bottles of wine.

Taylor Alexis S.

Yelp
Me & my girl group came in to celebrate for a birthday and the staff denied us at the door. No reason to. We were high energy but nothing out of the ordinary. For a bartender myself, I was pretty shocked to be treated as such.

Yelp
I have to say I was a little disappointed with the service. The lady seemed rushed, when I tried engaging her to tell me more about the wine she was short. I even asked why they named it FW as usually wineries tend to have a story and so you fall in love with the wine and the roots. She actually said "I don't know", k?!?! I asked for military discount and she said she didn't know and so eventually came back and said no on the tasting. I had a 15% on Yelp for checking in which I asked her to use, again just on the merchandise. Ugh?!? Okay well fine. Very impersonal, my least favorite wine stop.

Robin S.

Yelp
Dropped in by friends recommendation. Charles helped us find and select the best wines for our flavor profile and suggested pairings for everything and was well versed in all the wines. Really enjoyed our tasting experience and will be recommending to others.

Yelp
Quint little wooden building. Gals inside couldn't have been more friendly. Wine tasting is $10 for 5 pours and includes a cute stemless FWF wine glass. Also, live music every Saturday from 2-5pm. All of their wines are inherently on the sweet side. I was told it is a direct intention of the husband and wife owners. I have to be honest and say they weren't my favorite. Perhaps they are more suited for people who are just starting to drink wine. On a side note, Chocolat in Fredericksburg makes special wine filled, sugar coated candies specially for FWF. Sounds a bit strange, but they are amazing! The chocolates pair perfectly with the wineries sweet wines. They can only be purchased at the winery, so be sure to buy a box for yourself and maybe one for a gift...just try not to eat both before you have a chance to give one away. :) Wine=3 stars. 1 extra star for the fantastic service (some of the best out of all the wineries), live music, chocolates, and all around laid back atmosphere!

Yelp
It is a cute little tasting room, but they are in desperate need of staff. We went on a weekday when the weather was terrible (40s and rain), so it was definitely "off season," yet the place was crowded. There were two people working, but for a long stretch only the man behind the counter was helping any of the customers. We suspected the woman working didn't have authority to pour, but she ended up pouring for two ladies that came in next to us. They got perfect, attentive service, as she only served them, despite there being roughly 20 people up and down the bar, the other 18 under the care of the single other salesman, who looked visibly overworked and taxed. He was friendly enough, but it was clear he was just giving his typical speech before he sped on to someone else. The customer service (or lack thereof) definitely took something away from the experience. I got very little time with the man pouring, so it was hard to ask questions. Then, there were long pauses between pours. All in all, they need to work on their staffing. The wines range across the board, from dry to sweet, but I noticed that even the "semi-sweet" wine I tried was pretty sweet for a wine. (I can't imagine the far end of the spectrum.) The sauvignon blanc was described to taste like a pina colada, which it kind of did... more like a melted pina colada slushie. I think it was very hit or miss. That said, there was one wine that knocked my socks off - their merlot is incredible! It is a bit on the pricier end, but it is a really delicious merlot with a cherry nose and finish, which was really pleasant to drink. They offer a free glass with your tasting, which is nice, but contrary to every wine tasting I've done (and I confess to have done a lot in several states and even internationally), they only waive the tasting fee with the purchase of THREE bottles! So, if you want just one bottle and a tasting, that could run you $50 with the tip added in. The merlot maybe deserved that, but not when combined with everything else going on, unfortunately. Also, take heed they do not have bathrooms, even for patrons. I know that upset some people.

Yelp
Had the best time here when on vacation on SATX. we're went on a weekday so it was super quiet and not busy. The man pouring our tasting was very thorough and personable. He explained everything wonderfully. The wine was so amazing that I can't stop thinking about it. Can't ship to me in CT but I might have to have some shipped to my parents in NY. A lovely place- can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Delicious winery with impeccable customer service. GayNell was the server for our visit and we absolutely loved her. She was very welcoming, extremely informative and able to answer all of our questions with ease. GayNell was an absolute pleasure and she made our tasting visit a memorable experience for our entire group. Thanks to Fiesta Winery for a fun experience and a special "Thank you" to GayNell for making our visit so special. I would highly recommend this winery and be sure ask for GayNell if you really want to have a great time!!!

Yelp
Excellent wine tasting room on Fredericksburg's main street. As of January 2017, it's $12 for a 6-sample tasting flight, and it's a great value when one considers that you also get to keep the glass. (It's a non-stem glass, but I think those are great for drinkers who may be a little on the tipsy side.) Service was fast, friendly, and knowledgeable. Also, I like their setup: they split the wine list into two suggested grouping: white (and generally sweet), as well as red (and generally dry). Sweetness increases as you work from top to bottom. If you're not sure how sweet you like your wine, pick something from the middle, for example the Roussanne for the white, Cabernet for the red. Depending on your reaction, work 'up' or 'down' the list from there. Alas, when we visited the famous 'Lime in the Coconut' was out, but all the whites we tried ran the gamut from 'pretty good' to 'outstanding'. Of special merit was the 'Happy Trails' Chardonnay, which has such a magnificent peach bouquet that one could practically smell the fuzz! Definitely worth a visit here if you can't make it to their winery on 290 on the way to F'burg.

Yelp
If you're looking for an affordable winery with great membership perks, fiesta is the place for you. The wait can be long so put your name down and visit 6 shortest while you wait. Once you are stationed, you will experience a personal experience from one of the staff members. The wines are great and the atmosphere is friendly to anyone whether you are an amateur or expert. I recommend the back porch sweet red to start off.

Gadiel R.

Yelp
Really fun experience! Service was great and very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed ourselves and even bought a bottle for our wedding !
google avatar

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of Fredericksburg is a quaint little winery that will welcome you as one of their own. Great presentation as well as refreshing Peach Wine. Get the bottle. $17 as compared to two glasses of $14 total. Visit the back room. Especially for the ladies. I'm sure you will find something you will need.

Judy D.

Yelp
Very disappointed, the older lady with short blonde hair, she was very rude, she wasn't interesting in us being there for the $20 wine tasting. We were sitting in the middle at the bar, she passed us up frequently to wait on the people to the left & right of us. Unless you have an hour to spend on 6 wine tasting, just move along, there are other wine tasting down the street.
google avatar

Aaron B.

Yelp
Wife and I used to be members. Fiesta would mail wine to our house and we loved the wine. However, we moved and had a lot going on. We did have our address changed at the post office and all mail should have been forwarded to the new address. However, come time I got an email stating our wine had been delivered I called Fiesta winery and they searched for the wine. Their delivery driver delivered the wine without signature at our old address. Left alcohol at someone else's house. In which Fiesta winery said he wasn't supposed to do. And instead of trying to make it right with us as a member, they said it was on me to locate it and change my address. It should have been returned to sender and then contact me by email or phone I feel. Well they lost a member and paying customers. We loved the wine but is what it is. Hate it but Plenty of other choices.
google avatar

Ashley I.

Yelp
If you like "authentic" winery experiences, this isn't your place. If you want a more laid-back wine tasting experience, this is the place for you. The wines are decent, but the employees made no effort to sit and talk with us about the wine. Instead, the two young employees texted and ate lunch meat out of a ziplock bag the entire time we were there for our tasting. I actually felt like we were inconveniencing them by being there, to tell the truth.
google avatar

Joby M.

Yelp
Great wine and friendly staff! If your not a "wine drinker" I suggest you try the Texas Well Water. It will turn a beer drinker to a wine drinker. All the wines are easy drinkers. They do not have that awful burn/vinegar taste at the end. You won't be disappointed you stopped in!
google avatar

Korey A.

Yelp
Lindey was super kind and helpful! I loved the wines here. Lots of choices. Got the Back Porch Sittin and the canned Lime in the Coconut. 6 tastings for $12.
google avatar

Gabriella C.

Yelp
Love the back porch sittin red wine and my husband ordered more for me on the web site
google avatar

Travis W.

Yelp
Extremely disappointing wine selection accompanied by the lack of a restroom for patrons. There's nothing like an establishment that serves alcohol that can't accommodate basic human needs.

Mallery B.

Yelp
One of the less memorable places in Fredericksburg. The wines were lacking; the dry wines were boring and the sweet wines tasted like wines out of a kit. They were more like wine coolers than anything. The bartender basically just reiterated what the menu said about each wine as she poured, rather than actually giving any information about them. The atmosphere is simple and majority of our conversation with another patron was about other wineries in the area that served better wine. All in all, we'd likely not come back. This was a rather simple winery with not much going on and bad tasting wine.
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
I typically avoid the overly sweet wines, but Fiesta's Lime in the Coconut wine is DELICIOUS. My friends and I stopped by during a weekend in Fredericksburg, and chose to go for the tasting (6 tastes). The employees there are friendly and happy to provide recommendations on wines to try as well the order to sample them in. I enjoyed all of the ones I tried, but the Lime in the Coconut stuck out of to me for its summery, pina-colada-esque feel. My main regret is not buying a bottle of it at the time. But I know what I'm buying when I return.
google avatar

Jeffndonna M.

Yelp
Brought the wife here for vacation and she enjoyed ! Wine was great along with the atmosphere! 15 dollars for 6 tastings and you get the glass of course. Downside was they were understaffed and had the poor ladies behind the counter running circles but they did their best to keep up with the crowds
google avatar

Kelley L.

Yelp
Great staff - fun and interactive! Many wines made from TX only grapes. Large tasting room makes for an easier time during busy weekends. Awesome shaded courtyard for hot summer days. Be sure to add to your list of places to stop!
google avatar

Roshanda C.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I really enjoyed this tasting room. They allow you to taste any 6 wines that they have on their menu as part of the tasting. Taylor, who helped us was very knowledgeable about each and every wine. Also once she understood more of what I liked, her suggestions were perfect.
google avatar

Cheyenne L.

Yelp
This place is alright. The wine is fairly good and Garret was nice to me...but my friends weren't impressed. Tastings are more expensive than other places around the area but they have frozen wine which is pretty cool. They refuse to let you use the restroom (unlike every other place in the area that broadcast no public restrooms) so they had to go down a star. Otherwise, come here...unless you have to pee...
google avatar

Ami P.

Yelp
Such a fun time! We stood at the bar and got the wine tasting ($20) which includes 6 wines. They have a selection of white wine, reds, red blends, rose, and dessert wines. I liked all of them especially the dessert one that had a caramel taste. I'd recommend this tasting room.
google avatar

Robin T.

Yelp
Love the winery and would definitely go back. It's also the last stop on the tour so makes every wine taste amazing. I definitely bought more wines there then any other stop. Plus the atmosphere is laid back and definitely more my style. Would highly recommend.
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
Garrett, our server, was great. We had a great time chatting and tasting. They have a great variety of dry and sweet options.

Reina A.

Yelp
Emonnie was so great. She was very helpful in assisting us in picking the perfect wine! This place is very clean and cute too.
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place, I really did... However, in a winery rich environment like Fredericksburg OK wine and crabby employees just isn't going to cut it. I tried 6 wines, and would only consider 1. 18% isn't going to cut it. If the lady pouring would have taken the time to talk to us about what we were trying I would have added a star, but she lost it. Keep walking down the street.

Chad K.

Yelp
Good time...its just fred prices;) Town aint cheap bit we love it! I would really lile to retire in Fredericksburg but I better hit the lottery

Megan H.

Yelp
Kiki was our server and she was not very enthusiastic. Many questions we asked were swept under the rug, no details about any of the wine samples we had, and no thank you's at the end of service. After visiting multiple wineries today, ending at Fiesta was a buzz kill. Do not recommend.
google avatar

Janet D.

Yelp
What a fun spot! Being from California, I tend to like bolder wines, but as kk (the woman behind the bar) explained to me, the name Fiesta describes the wine - they are fun, bright partying wines made for a float trip down the river or a barbeque out back. The tasting room has a fun, bright, party atmosphere and beautiful views of the countryside. She and the other woman there (Sarah) helped me to realize that when you drink a Texas wine, don't be expecting a California taste. The Fiesta wines were a little bit sweet for me, but oh- so drinkable. I could picture sitting outside on a sunny afternoon sipping their Chenin Blanc with a bunch of friends and having a grand ol' time. I ended up buying a bottle of their Decadencia to give as a gift. It is a perfect after dinner treat full of cherries and chocolate. One small glass of it is better than a slice of chocolate cake... Just remember, when you go to a TexMex restaurant you don't expect California Cuisine and when you go to a Fiesta you don't drink Opus 1!
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
I started my wine trip on a Sunday...which most wineries are closed until noon. Fiesta opened at 11, which was nice. I enjoyed the atmosphere, as they have shopping in the tasting room. The bartenders were very nice and offered us chocolates with the sweeter wines. I tried sweet reds and reds. I didn't like 1/2 of the wines I tried...very sour. Complimentary non-stem wine glasses were a very nice change from the stemmed glasses.
