Los Angeles Is Now America's No. 1 City for Coffee

"An imaginative Hollywood coffee bar created by Royce Rollins that channels Black futurist influences, street fashion, and Asian café culture; the menu includes Japanese black sugar lattes served in striking vessels and even a playful “secret menu” displayed on an original Macintosh with a touchscreen interface." - Julie Wolfson

I’m so grateful to live in the neighborhood and be able to walk over to this cozy little coffee shop. As someone who loathes corporate-style coffee chains, this place truly checks all the boxes. It has a unique and inviting atmosphere, the staff is friendly (no L.A. attitude) and the coffee is delicious! I find it very pleasant to bring my laptop and get some work done here. I highly recommend the iced mocha — the chocolate they use is vegan :) It feels good to support a small local business that just gets it right. ☕️❤️

Google
Just walked in for morning coffee and it was a great experience. The outdoor seating is perfect for soaking up the sun while enjoying your coffee. The inside vibe is calm and designed, with wood and greenery it felt really relaxed but still lively. As a coffee person I should say that the coffee flavor were smooth and rich, and they nailed the latte art too.

Google
Great menu. Really delicious espresso, the flavor continues to develop as you drink it and it’s a treat. It’s a bit minimalistic/dim inside, but plenty of seating if you want to work/study. Very friendly service too!

Malik

Google
An absolutely soothing and pleasureful experience. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, great music (not too loud), great natural light. The coffee is incredibly delicious, and the entire shop concept is stellar. The origin story and interactive desktop on the bar is fun. By far one of my favorites in the city. Highly recommend sitting and enjoying your drink. Royce, the owner, is incredibly passionate and thoughtful. Ask him about the shop concept and origin story, super creative.

Google
So glad to have discovered my new favorite coffee shop in LA! Staff were super friendly & one informed me and my friend about all the drink options, and gave us the best recommendation — the Japanese Black Sugar Latte w/ Cream Top (no extra charge!). Bonus points for a very nice aesthetic inside. So so so good, will definitely be coming back.

Google
my usual order - iced flat white with oat milk - 10/10 taste from 1st sip. not a huge fan of califia oat milk, but it still tastes great in the finished drink.

Elizario Garcia

Google
I had the iced vanilla latte. Cinnamon coffee cake donut. Overall 7/10 I love the overall idea of the vibe, but when I went it seemed liked that area was closed.

Google
I'd heard tell of this wackadoo hollywood coffee spot from my gfriends minions (her office is down the street), stopped by on my once monthly drive to my beverly hills office from nela. This place is like if the severance creative team started a third wave la coffee spot, tons of ferns and old mac computers, the visual aeshetic being based on the mac iconography circa the early 90s/late 80s. The coffee was great, the pastries are from the same spot that all these places uses (the tip off is the ham and cheese croissant with the cornichon speared on top. Anyway, it was adorable.

Yelp
Dropped off my dog for grooming at Healthy Spot next door and decided to pick up coffee. The cafe is unique with mismatched furnitures and plastic filing cabinets as tables and benches. Service is standard. I ordered the JBS latte with cream top and wow! As a coffee snob, I legit felt happiness from how good this tasted lol. It was a well-made drink. I think I'm OK with the $8 price tag only when I bring my dogs in for grooming.

Yelp
There are few things in life that make me feel truly alive: fresh sheets, a good hair day, and the cream top on my JBS latte from File Systems of Coffee. I don't know what kind of magic is happening behind that bar, but this cream top is seductive. Silky, velvety, a little cold, a little sweet--it kisses the top of the espresso like it knows exactly what it's doing. I take one sip and suddenly I'm blushing. It's giving foreplay. And just when you think it can't get better... there's Royce, the owner. Warm smile, soft voice, and the kind of energy that makes you want to tell him your whole life story before your order's even ready. He's the reason this place doesn't feel like just a coffee shop--it feels like a little pocket of peace. Like your favorite secret. The shop itself is cozy and unpretentious, just the way I like it. No corporate coldness, no fake smiles--just great coffee, real people, and cream tops that should probably come with a warning label. I only let myself go on weekends, which honestly feels like I'm rationing joy. But that's what makes it special. It's my reward, my ritual, my little indulgent affair down the street. If File Systems ever discontinues the cream top, I will spiral. Until then... I'll be here. Sipping. Swooning. Alive

Yelp
Really hip coffee spot on Melrose that I first discovered on TikTok. It's got a cool interior and decor (old Apple monitors, lots of plants, and shoes cast in resin). It was a nice place to catch up with some friends on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered the Hojicha latte, which was delicious. Would like to try the matcha next time.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
A nice little interesting coffee shop. The interior is very minimal with plants everywhere, and hints of old computer and cubicle accessories. It's small, but intentional. Seating is a little uncomfortable. Parking is street parking, it can be difficult depending on the time. It is on Melrose so it can get busy at times. Every time I've come here there's been some commotion going on outside. That is of no fault of the establishment but it is this mismatch in environment from outside to inside. AC is always on so I like to bring a sweater with me. I enjoyed an iced matcha latte. It was pretty good. I do think their drinks are smaller in size. I don't know officially, but I do feel like I get through my drink faster than I'm used to. Maybe it's just that good that I don't realize how fast I'm consuming? Either way, I do enjoy coming here for a pick me up drink.

Yelp
Really liked how there was no additional charge to oat milk or a cream top, which is really rare these days. Service was super fast and baristas were kind. Ambiance was great, nice to do work although there isn't an abundance of seats. I went on a hot day and felt like the ac inside wasn't working great but I still really enjoyed my experience! Would come back again!

Yelp
File Systems of Coffee is a cute spot on Melrose with eclectic design and a unique concept. I frequented this place quite a bit when they first opened because I thought their matcha was unique. Served with Japanese black sugar, the molasses gave it a great taste. I also appreciated that there was no additional charge for plant based milk. They also had a pretty good chai latte. I visited again recently, and was impressed with the decor changes implemented. There was more seating space and decorations and an expanded menu. Service was also really speedy. They also now offer a cream top for their drinks at no additional cost. The only ding was I felt that their matcha wasn't as good as it used to be. I'm not sure if they had to change cultivars because of the matcha shortage or they're making them differently now, but it tasted far more bitter and generic than I remember. Still decent, but no longer special, which I thought was a shame. Still a cute spot to hit up if you're in the area though.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with an administrative theme--they did a great job decorating and I tried the matcha and the black sugar latte. The matcha was delicious and the black sugar was also quite tasty! The seating is pretty uncomfortable but that's the expectation with trendy coffee shops these days.

Yelp
This truly is the epitome of a unique coffee shop. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised when you step inside this unassuming coffee shop. It's a unique blend of analog and digital vibes, with an inviting space adorned with lush greenery and bathed in natural light. I had their hibiscus Yuzu Tonic, which was delicious. I'm inspired to be more adventurous with my espresso drinks in the future. The service was OK. Perhaps I caught them on a cold day. I intend to return without fail. Non-metered street parking was plenty.

Yelp
This coffee shop carries that name for a reason and I'm totally impressed by the peculiar concept they're trying to offer. Decorated the venue with bunch of old Apple monitors, probably some of the earliest generations, which look like still able to be used. Plenty of seats available, with most of them come with low coffee table, as it's gonna say that the place is more created for casual hangouts than people sit and work or study. They offer handful selection of pastries, which will still be complete if you come relatively early or at least before noon. I went for their Miso butterscotch cookie, which again was uncommon here in LA. I love the overall taste and the cookie came in right gooeyness level, but I wouldn't call it my fave. Besides, I could taste more of white chocolate than either butterscotch or miso. Not complaining though! The highlight was doubtlessly their Japanese Black Sugar a.k.a JBL Latte. Precise level of sweetness with bold coffee flavor. I loved the aroma as well as the taste, perfectly suited my coffee preference. My friend had their Mocha and she said one of her most fave in town!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this café shop! It does have a very relaxed vibe to it! Parking is a little difficult! This place is definitely a hidden gem for sure! I ordered the Matcha latte and they did not have option for coconut milk, but just for the regular milk and it was delicious! They do have a little cute pop-up shop in the back! The service is great people are there are very friendly!
google avatar

Celine K.

Yelp
cute coffee shop, with decent seating and street parking. i recommend sticking w the coffee over the matcha. no additional charge for cream tops/alternative milks!

Yelp
File Systems of Coffee is a cafe located in Melrose. The interior is very aesthetic with lots of greenery and office detailing as decor. There's a decent amount of seating inside with a few spots outside and some outlets. It's a great place for studying. The staff was great and they make the drinks right in front of you. They answered some questions I had and gave us all a sample of another drink. Drinks We ordered the Matcha JBS for $8. You can change the milk at no extra charge and it's recommended to try the matcha with oat milk. The drink was very honey-flavored and it kind of took a little bit away from the matcha flavor. It's a really good drink but just a little unexpected. It's very smooth as well with no powder feel. They also gave us a sample of the Vanilla which goes for $7.25. It's another great choice to try here. Overall | 4.5 The ambiance + service: 5/5 The drinks: 4/5 The price: $$
google avatar

Yuri J.

Yelp
A cool and vibey coffee shop in Melrose, the baristas were so kind and fun to chat with! I wish they offered more pastries, but they are from Sugarbloom bakery which is one of my favs. For coffee, they have JBS - Japanese black sugar , latte , matcha or hojicha. The latte was recommend with whole milk which was smooth and a perfect level of sweetness.
google avatar

Yossi G.

Yelp
Place has a cool and different design, but I don't see a reason to pay 8-9 dollars for a cup of coffee. There are a lot of coffee shops within this price range but I will never justify these kind of prices.. maybe it's just me but I think it makes coffee so expensive for almost no reason. Staff was friendly and nice and matcha tasted great.
google avatar

Dom K.

Yelp
Vibes are sooooo on point. Each seating area provides a different experience, a different function. The decor comes together so well, especially with how each area in the space has something unique to offer. For food and drinks, we had a hojicha JBS, a mocha, and a matcha donut. The hojicha was good but the mocha was gross. Too acidic with no mocha flavor to it. The matcha donut was tasty. It's not a normal donut; it's spongy and a tiny bit dense at the center.

Adam A.

Yelp
The coffee cups are small, and the prices are way too high. The employees are nice, but the furniture doesn't allow for a comfortable visit. It's unfortunate because it's nestled in my neighborhood, but I won't be a regular visitor for the reasons mentioned above.
google avatar

Ariana C.

Yelp
We got the Hojicha (9/10) and JBS Latte (8/10). The Hojicha had a smooth flavor and perfect sweetness. The latte didn't stick out as much in flavor, but it was nice. High quality across the board. Cool and intentional concept cafe which makes it unique. Generous seating for a small place. Baristas are really friendly and were willing to help despite us coming in the last 30 minutes! I'll be back to try more. :)
google avatar

Denny K.

Yelp
Unassuming and brilliant. The Coffee JBS and Matcha JBS (Japanese Brown Sugar) were perfectly balanced and made with care. The tech-analog decor is cute without being over the top. A must-visit if you're in the area.
google avatar

Tushita H.

Yelp
Amazing drinks. The hojicha latte with almond milk and cream top is DIVINE. Perfect flavors, perfect sweetness. The design-aesthetics of this spot are nice too. I wish I lived closer!
google avatar

Deni B.

Yelp
Accidentally discovered one of the best matchas in LA! Very impressed with the overall style, taste, and attention to detail at File Systems of Coffee. All that and a nice staff. I was just passing by, but definitely want to come by and stay awhile.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Cute place to catch up with a friend over a fun bevy. I ordered the hojicha JPS (with light sweetness and the recommended oat milk!) YUM. Def a fan of this spot and the hojicha was perfectly balanced - sweet, nutty, creamy, and light. It hit the spot and the decor of the old computers gave my friend and I some serious nostalgia as we discussed floppy disks, computer consoles, and everything in-between! Street parking wasn't too bad on an early Sunday afternoon. There were some folks in there working on their laptops and some just hanging out. Adding this to my rotational list if I'm in the area or passing by. (However, not sure if I would get the matcha as I prefer hand-whisked!) See y'all again soon xo
google avatar

Yelp
Only good thoughts and zero complaints...except the prices. This is a very peaceful, stripped-down place whose earthy minimalism is just right. And what's not to like about a joint whose name is so random it's adorable. The counter folks are genuinely friendly and hospitable too. But a 12 oz brewed beverage is $8 before tip. That's one steep steep.
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
Coffee was great. The baristas were amazing. The location I had such a unique decor and feel to the place. Using Brandywine coffee and Sey were great choices. Will need to come back to taste more of their menu. Just had one Americano to start. They care about quality here. This is the best coffee I've had in the Melrose area. Great choice

Yelp
I came in late on a weekday morning and didn't have my computer with me otherwise I would have stayed all afternoon. Such a cool concept with simple/ functional space to work + chill in. Both the baristas working greeted me and service was super precise. The entire transaction kind felt like it was designed for efficiency and enjoyment kinda like the quote on the pastry bag. "That part where artistry and engineering are inseparable" The almond filling in this pastry was like caramel and gooey creamy and the outside was super flakey and crunchy! The Mocha (with oat milk) was powerfully caffeinated and tasted like lightly salted dark chocolate! You can get whatever milk substitute you want and they don't charge extra! Can't wait to come back
google avatar

Christa C.

Yelp
Such beautiful decor! I love the tech/plant aesthetic inside. The JBS was good, though a little pricey. Overall, such a peaceful and pretty place to get some work done in the week!

Kiara M.

Yelp
Super cute! The staff are very nice and my matcha with the cream top was pretty good. I didn't go for work but I did see a lot of people working so I'm assuming they have free WiFi. Gender neutral bathroom. Very cute outdoor patio

Yelp
While driving into West Hollywood we needed some caffeine so we looked up something on the way to our destination and found this place. Ample street parking (not metered) on a Friday morning. We walked in and saw several people sitting with their beverages on their devices/laptops. It was a very quiet coffee shop, I felt bad we were talking with the barista while we waited for our order and interrupting that silence. The barista, Daniel, was friendly and instantly greeted us and waited patiently while we looked at the menu. We got the mocha coffee and chai tea. Both were so good. The chai was very different from other chai I've had but soo good. Even the mocha was better than other mocha I've had that I drank more coffee than I normally do. Now I know where to stop if I'm in Hollywood and need caffeine :)
google avatar

Yelp
I can't edit so I have to update just to say, get in on this brioche cinnamon roll. Get it toasted. The frosting has a tangy twist to it with the cream cheese. Very dog-friendly spot and service is bomb still since I came last week. I will support any 90s throwback business as a rule.
google avatar

Yelp
been dreaming of going here ever since i've seen it on social media. the aesthetics and everything were AMAZING. tbh usually when i come to LA cafes i don't usually expect amazing service however when i came here the cashier was soo nice and welcoming. i especially loved how they do not charge extra for alternative milks. we got one matcha jbs and a hojicha both with cream. it was DELICIOUSSS. parking can be tough i luckily found parking on the side on a mid sunday afternoon but definitely would come back just because it was so nice and relaxing inside
google avatar

Emma G.

Yelp
The aesthetic in here is definitely one of the best parts, it's super cool! I did like my matcha but it didn't really stand out to me, and with the prices so high, I don't know if I'll come back over the other amazing matcha options in LA. The staff were super sweet and quick!
google avatar

April C.

Yelp
This is a wonderful, clean space with plenty of indoor & outdoor seating. JBS latte was amazing and service was great. There is street parking in the surrounding area.
google avatar

Mika C.

Yelp
What a lovely cafe!! I was welcomed in by a friendly staff who walked me through their tea menu breaking down each drink and allowing me to smell each of the loose leaf teas. TOP TIER CUSTOMER SERVICE. I chose the Matcha latte with the matcha from Kyoto and the Japanese black sugar from Okinawa. Absolutely delicious. One of the best in LA. The WiFi here is fast, there are several outlets, seating options inside and outside, and GREAT MUSIC ON AUX. Another shoutout to the playlist because it was that good. I wish I had more wfh days but the next time I do I plan to be back here
google avatar

Chloe R.

Yelp
it's another one of those coffee shops i hesitate to review because i know it'll be flooded by the public, but file systems is way too good to gatekeep another pocket LA gem, amazing and airy interior with beautiful greenery & futuristic decor. the baristas were beyond exceptional, free wifi and outlets. loved their japanese black sugar latte series, got the matcha (4/5), espresso (5/5) and hojicha (4/5) lattes!

Isaiah R.

Yelp
Easily the best coffee shop in LA. Koatji milk is yum along with their JBS. Highly recommend. Service is always excellent and they're really the best dressed cafe. Interior is great as well!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I am a firm believer of their JBS (Japanese Black Sugar) matcha latte with oat milk. (+1 point because alternative milks do not cause extra!) I enjoy and appreciate the set-up of the barista bar, the projector art on the walls, and the overall thoughtful and decorative design of the space. Workers kindly check in on you throughout your time + there are outlets available!
google avatar

Owen M.

Yelp
Excellent coffee. Everything a coffee shop should be. Top tier LA people watching terrain.
google avatar

Makaela M.

Yelp
Refreshing cafe/coffee. This quality is insane y'all, the whole spot is relaxing and open but good lord this was the best latte I've ever had. It was my first time but a first of future many's. Service was kind and patient, I got such good flavor recommendations and suggestions regarding pairings. New morning stop for sure
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
Cool place! Great coffee selection and super friendly staff. I purchased the Gesha for $13 and it was a bit underwhelming... it tasted like it was under extracted. The barista told me that was normal although I'm skeptical...
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
Very yummy drinks and great service! Baristas brought out our drinks to as us we were looking around, great service and great drinks will definitely be coming back :)
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee is of the highest quality. The ambiance is rad. I hardly ever encounter a line. It's one of my favorite coffee shops in the city. Please spread the word and support a small business!

Yelp

Tiffany L.

Yelp
I went around 1pm and it was pretty empty so there was lots of space to study. Parking was extremely hard to find though because street cleaning so happened to be on the day we went. I got the hojicha jbs ($8) and liked how you could change the milk without additional cost. The baristas were super nice and overall I liked the vibes except that the music was too loud
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
I've wanted to try this place since it opened. Finally got the chance to do some work here a few days ago. It's a nice open space with some chill RnB and hip hop music. I decided to have a latte while working here. The latte was very smooth which is something I look for when trying a good coffee. The owners seem very nice and I like the fact that they check in on you while you're enjoying your coffee. It is a bit pricey for what you get. My only complaint is I wish they had more options for pastries but I take it the focus here is specifically the coffee. Either way I will be back!
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
What a gem. Edwin and the owner welcomed us in. Love the concept - unique interior and great coffee. Got the JBS (japanese black sugar) and it was pretty good. Subtle sweetness with the japanese black sugar they made into a syrup. Also tried a special matcha tonic (not on the menu, but coming soon) thanks to the owner and that was splendid! 5 stars for the service, vibe, and pretty solid drinks

Emma B.

Yelp
File Systems is one of my favorite coffee shops of all time. The JBS matcha latte is my favorite drink and the gluten free matcha donut is my favorite pastry. The staff is friendly, skilled, and professional. It's peaceful and calm enough to work but also a great place to sit and chat. Can't recommend highly enough!
google avatar

Jeshua F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite coffee shops in la. The vanilla latte has the perfect amount of milk to espresso ratio. I also like their vanilla flavor you can see it has some for. of vanilla bean. It's not an artificial flavor as far as i can tell. The cortado was not my drink but my friend said it was pretty good just needed a little more milk. I love the ambiance and the workers are really nice. I would recommend their almond croissant it has a strawberry paste that was amazing!
google avatar

Marilyn P.

Yelp
Upon arriving at this cafe, you will have to find street parking (that's LA for you). The interior is really cool and aesthetic. Has a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating. The service was good and quick. I got the JBS, however it didn't suit my taste. It had an off putting taste at the start of each sip that I wasn't into. Overall, it was a nice experience!
google avatar

Shayna E.

Yelp
GREAT matcha, friendly service, and unique takes on classic items. I loved their Japanese Black Sugar matcha latte even though I typically prefer an unsweetened matcha. Super friendly barista explained the process of making Japanese Black Sugar and made sure I understood what I was ordering. There's some seating inside and outside too if you want to hang out. Overall a five star experience!
google avatar

Steph L.

Yelp
Food - got the JBS (Japanese Black Sugar) Latte and Vanilla latte. The JBS it's definitely unique. The vanilla latte is pretty good. I'll definitely go back to try some of the pastries. Service - super friendly staff. I (think he might have been one of the owners) was there chatting with a customer about their beans and sounded very knowledgeable about where they come from and how they picked roasters. Ambience - it's definitely a vibe. Love that there seems to be lots of table space both inside and out and they aren't crammed too close together. You can easily pass this spot without even realizing it. There's no private lot so be on the lookout for street parking.
