Yelp
Of the Asian foods available in the H, I think Filipino food is the most slept on. When my crew gets together, they want Sushi, Sichuan, Korean BBQ, ...Vietnamese. Nobody ever has a hankering for some Kare Kare. As a result, most of the Filipino food i've had has come via somebody's Mom being hella generous.
So what would happen if I stepped into the wild side? There are 2 Pinoy spots on Bissonnett, this one is right across the street from my job.
Close By?
And it's a buffet?
Weekday with a Coke is 10 bucks and some change?
"Once again it's on" (c) Ice Cube.
Decor/Ambiance - This is the sort of spot you bring your true love, not a first date. It's bare bones with some tables, and they run Karaoke videos.
Service - It's seat your self, grab a plate, pay when you're done. That wasn't obvious to me, but they were all nice.
Authenticity factor? - I'm not from the Philippines, so I couldn't tell you. There might be some underground spots that keep it really real. But for the first 30 minutes I was there, I was the only non-Asian. Some African dudes did come through and represented. (one dude was in his full regalia actually)
Now I had a hankering for some Lechon, but I don't recall there being any. There were a ton of dishes there that I wasn't familiar with. A bit of Adobo, some Kare Kare, and then they went through all of the Filipino Classics. I rocked some of the Dinuguan (Stew made with Pig's Blood and Innards), kaldereta, some Pancit Bichon?, and a couple of other joints. I should have taken more pictures of the food and the descriptions, but I didn't want to be that guy. Don't even think about doing any real work after a heavy meal like this one.
But da peace day resistaunce? (pronounce it phonetically, or like Lil Kim would say it)
Dessert.
Now it's a well known fact that Pinoy's know how to party. Some of the best dj's, best b-boys, and most boisterous B-ball fans known to man. But i'd been sleeping on the desserts.
The Filipino sticky rice game is unfadeable.
One joint was your standard sticky rice, the next jawn (Biko I believe) looked to be carmelized with some brown sugar perhaps? And the ultra combo? Sticky Rice, Corn, and Coconut. I can't even begin to describe how something so off the wall for a Western Palate is so good.
As I roll up to pay, young lady @ the register was super nice. I mention that I really wanted to try Sisig but didn't see any, cause that's the one dish I hear the most about. She grabbed a to-go cup for me, and found some Sisig and hooked me up. Their version involved pork, something sour, some green onions, some peppers...it was like a better version of the Jamaican Classic Codfish.
Definite Fan.
