Where to Book Beautiful Private Dining Rooms at Portland Restaurants

"The exposed brick walls and hardwood floors of this Woodlawn restaurant’s private dining room make for a homey but still elegant setting, complementing dinners of pizza and fresh pasta. The room seats 40, with meals starting at $30 per person for a buffet-style event. Menu highlights include whole roasted trout with salsa verde, coal-roasted rib-eyes, and Bolognese. Learn more on the restaurant’s website." - Rebecca Roland, Brooke Jackson-Glidden

On the Grid : Firehouse Restaurant

"In case pizza had you thinking of slices and casual vibes, let’s set the record straight. We think it’s safe to say that Firehouse is one of — if not the only — fine dining establishment in Woodlawn. Housed in a historically rich building (yes, an old firehouse), it is a restaurant with an air of class and menu rich with southern Italian fare. It’s the perfect place for date night, good conversation, or just a dependably quality meal." - Matthew Anderson

Restaurants Where You Can Host Your Wedding in Portland

"This beautiful Woodlawn restaurant sets a romantic scene indoors, sporting charming brick walls and wood-fired oven that make for an exceedingly cozy urban wedding. Guests can snack on pizzettes, burrata, roasted vegetables, and handcrafted pastas, with desserts like tiramisu for those skipping the tiered wedding cake. The restaurant is home to a second-floor private room that can accommodate 60 standing, but couples can also buy out the full restaurant for larger celebrations of up to 150 guests, including the patio. Those interested can also just rent out the string-light-lit patio, which seats 40 comfortably; for summer weddings, this is the ideal spot for a ceremony." - Jenni Moore, Eater Staff

Thank you Firehouse team for making our wedding day go perfectly! We booked out the entire restaurant for the day, so we were able to decorate and get ready starting at 11am. With our 42 guests, we held the ceremony in the patio out front, then had dinner upstairs and the dance party downstairs. The food was incredible and we heard so many compliments about it from our guests. Working with the events manager (Alec) was great with his quick responses, flexibility, suggestions, day-of coordination, and DJ-ing!!

Google
My friendive down the street from here so we stopped by for a casual dinner one night. The beets and cauliflower appetizers were very good, but carrots were a bit too salty for my liking. The pasta was also great, and the mushroom pizza looked good but I didn't have a chance to try it! The vibes were a little weird that evening, and the restaurant was very smoky, so not sure what was going on but we still enjoyed our visit.

Fireside is a warm and delicious embrace. Our recent family dinner at Fireside was an absolute delight! From the moment we stepped inside, the restaurant's historic charm enveloped us, creating a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere. It felt special, yet comfortable – a perfect setting for a memorable evening. We embarked on a culinary adventure, sampling a wide array of their offerings, and each dish was a testament to freshness and thoughtful seasoning. The two pizzas we tried were distinct and delicious, boasting vibrant toppings on perfectly crisp crusts. The beet salad was a refreshing burst of color and flavor, while the roasted cauliflower offered a delightful nuttiness and crispy yet tender texture. The bruschetta was an elegant starter, highlighting the quality of the ingredients. For our main courses, the lamb was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful. The steak was equally impressive, expertly prepared and seasoned. The cacio e pepe was a creamy and satisfying classic, and the baked pasta was a comforting and rich indulgence. What truly stood out across the board were the complex flavors and interesting textures present in every dish – a sign of a kitchen that pays close attention to detail. Adding to the wonderful experience was our server, who was incredibly kind and courteous. Their attentiveness enhanced the already enjoyable ambiance. Overall, Fireside exceeded our expectations. The delicious and thoughtfully prepared food, combined with the historic building's fancy vibe and the exceptional service, makes it a restaurant we wholeheartedly recommend. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

Google
Best Portland restaurant I've been to in a long time!! The roasted carrots are phenomenal! Well seasoned and perfect texture! The cauliflower with lemon crema is mouth watering! The carbonara was rich and decadent and the flavor profile worked so well. The dinner was light, rather than heavy!

Google
This place has a great vibe, and the food is amazing. I love those varied the menu is, as I can always bring picky eaters and everyone will find something they like. The standout is the wood fired pizza, with the “five alarm” being my favorite.

Google
Friendly, fast service. Seating indoor and outdoor with tables and a bar seating area. They have a tasty selection of offerings such as pizza, pastas, salads and entree items. I started with the focaccia which was cut and toasted and served with an herbed butter. The halibut as my entree was a small portion for the price but it was cooked wonderfully, crispy and well seasoned on the outside while flaky and juicy on the inside. For dessert I ordered the lemon ricotta cake with blueberries and whipped cream, plated beautifully, the cake was decadent.

Our server Brynn was so kind and too such good care of us. Every menu item was BURSTING with flavor. We live out of town and I’m just really bummed I can’t eat here every night! 🤣

Google
I’m going to say, 3 1/2 stars. The food is stellar. One of the best pizzas I’ve had in Portland, hands down (sausage, red sauce, and mama li’ls), perfect crust. Excellent. The rotisserie chicken is an amazing dish. Beet salad was VERY GOOD. The service is pretty lackluster, and that is why I give 3 1/2, instead of 4. I do recommend this place, plus it’s a cool building.

Yelp
I think the small plates section of the menu could be skipped and would just focus on the pizza. I can't recommend the coal roasted carrots, they simply tasted of smoke and coal and were undercooked. Unfortunately the steak also had that powerful coal flavor. The pizza was the best thing we ordered, the crust was quality.

Yelp
Excellent food and wonderful staff! Pizza is a amazing as with the entire menu! Highly recommend the firehouse!

Yelp
Firestone is my neighborhood go-to spot for an easy elevated meal. Pasta is made fresh, and pizza is delicious, salads and infused butter for the focaccia are delectable. Never go wrong with a stop at Firestone for date night or casual meal at their cozy bar.

Yelp
Told their new GM I was a neighbor and lived next to the restaurant and he said my house looked like it's full of guns? (I'm black if that paints the picture). I only went in because I broke my foot and am on crutches but getting surface level home insults along with my $100 2 drink 2 app order wasn't really what I was going for lol guess I'll go back to every other restaurant on this block until they replace him and/or put the old cauliflower back on the menu

Yelp
Great sandwich and friendly service ! We entered the place it was clean and smelled great ! My wife and I each had a sandwich and this is WAY better than their competitors !

Yelp
Went here for a Friday date night with my fiancee. We ordered a Margherita Pizza, a burrata salad and garlic bread with pesto aioli. The salad was delightful. It had a citrus vinaigrette and candied walnuts. Yum. The pizza was good, it did have a rather watery base which made it hard to pick up a slice without all the toppings and cheese fall off. The tiramisu was okay. I think I am more drawn to traditional tiramisu, the one here is served in a glass cup. Overall it wasn't a bad an experience. The pizza is cooked in a firewood oven and gives it a nice Smokey flavor. We sat outside since it was so nice out. It did take awhile to get seated despite it not being very busy but there was only one hostess and one waitress so I get it.

Yelp
Solid every time. The food, the staff, the drinks and all of it in a cool historical building.

Yelp
Wonderful converted firehouse atomosphere.. Very pleasant staff , but staff was abit overwhelm with our party of 30.. Family style platters of Food was served but very slow with only 2 servers... The food was good and well flavord but abit too much salt for me.; especially the veggies were way too salty. The italian ricotta cake was very delcious.

Yelp
Had such a nice dinner here with my family last night. We had the carrots, cauliflower, two salads, Trout, Carbonara and pizza and all were really good. The restaurant is small and feels cozy and intimate (but not too intimate). The menu isn't massive, but right sized and intentional which is much better in my opinion and the staff was lovely. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
My family arranged an 80th birthday party for me here and it was a total success! Family was allowed to go early to decorate, even though on this Saturday, they were not open until 5 pm. We had the whole area upstairs, which was spacious and well lit. There was a restroom off the main room. The food was absolutely delicious, whether it was the mushroom pizza or the roasted carrots and the cauliflower (my personal favorite). They all loved the rigatoni, both the vegetarian and the regular. The young man in charge absolutely Brock his neck to make sure that we were all happy and had what we needed. I absolu would recommend this restaurant/pub and thank them for a wonderful time!

Yelp
We used to eat here all the time... at least two times a week.... Then the original owner/chef sold it to the present day operation. At the transition time they promised that they would not be making any changes... a difficult promise to make but one the customers whom built the receipts up to the sale value accepted with hope. We went back a few times and the good started to taste different, not long after. So when Compana across the street opened up, we found a new place to eat! Today we thought we would try Firehouse again, we looked at the menu and immediately noticed that the Arancini and the Pot de Crème were missing from the menu but the Clam Pizza caught our eye! We got the clam pizza, marinated beets and the cauliflower. Here's what we experienced: -pizza; the crust recipe has changed onto a chewy rather than crisp cracker style crust (more like some common pizza chain). Puzza was also nearly half the size they used to be and the sauce offered little flavor other than garlic. I love garlic but was hoping for a nice clam flavor with a garlic infused taste. -beets also tasted of little but garlic and a reduced portion of goat cheese pana cota and a very altered recipe. -cauliflower is only good when you top it with enough of the lemon crème fraiche sauce to mask the cauliflower. However the sauce was slightly drizzled with a sauce that offered no detectable lemon flavor at all. All in all it was a disappointment to say the least! Unfortunately did not see the nearly $50 price tag!

Yelp
**note only reservations We were a walk in luckily they took us which we were a party of four. Greeted upon entering and were friendly. Seated by the bar, given a drink menu and food menu. The fried cauliflower is a must, and the drinks. The chicken and white chili was okay the combination of the foods together was throwing my palate off. The beef and broccoli was decent but I wouldn't order it again. Overall the food was okay, I don't think I would comeback again. Maybe I should've tried the pizza.

Yelp
Soggy crust pizza! Usually when you pick up a slice you expect to be able to eat it pointy end to fat crust end. Not here. Our three pizzas were as limp as a wet noodle. Ended up trying to eat with a fork. Asked the hostess about it because we couldn't get our waiters attention. She said " that's just how they are". Arg!! I've had much better pizza in Portland. The beer was good, but we didn't come to drink. Doubt we will return.

Yelp
We booked Firehouse for a private event in the upstairs dining room and were so impressed by the quality of the food and service we received. All the food was delicious and the signature cocktails were spot-on to what we had requested. The menu packages had a good variety of options and the planning process was very flexible. The final costs came in right at what we were expecting. I highly recommend Firehouse for a private event.

Rod V.

Yelp
There is a reason you can always find a table at Firehouse. Don't be shy about just walking in, if you dare eat there at all. Firehouse was a great pizza restaurant pre-pandemic. Now it's just plain middle of the road. Poor service. Slow and at times non-existent. Boring menu. They do offer "specials", but don't do the word "special" any justice. And the food they do offer is often not up to par. Correction, very often not up to par. My pizza cooked in a real wood oven was underdone on the bottom and burnt on the crust. There is a fine set to making pizza in a wood oven. The cooks at firehouse have yet to master that set. I will be taking my hard earned dollars elsewhere.

Korina K.

Yelp
Firehouse is a great little spot in the Dekum neighborhood. The wood fire pizza is delicious. It is a very laid back cozy little place.
google avatar

Yelp
Best hidden gem in town. Shhh, don't tell anyone so we can always get a table. Wood fired Yums. It's all good from the pizza to the steak or fish. Cute ambiance. Wood smoke cozy aromas. Yes, you should also get the radicchio salad to start. It's not even a question. If you can do the chefs table, do it. Beg for the prawns, delicious.

Gary S.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places, with friendly staff, creative food made from scratch and extensive outdoor seating under a tented area. (This has been well-heated with propane towers, but that may change with new regulations enacted in Portland requiring electric heating.) They have excellent wood-fired pizza and will use the same oven for other dishes, such as cauliflower that gets a creamy texture under those high temperatures. They regularly list specials and will modify their dishes for dietary needs. Everything's good, from salads to side dishes, pasta, pizza and desserts. They have good wine selections by the glass. There's plenty of safe, nearby street parking. And the location is very convenient if you're coming from Vancouver. Occasionally they'll host private parties, so call ahead to make sure that they're open to the public that night.

Yelp
I enjoyed a fine meal here with great friends! The food, radicchio salad, mushroom pizza and Margherita pizza were delicious! The service was very warm and attentive, and the restaurant itself has a refined rugged charm.

Yelp
The food here is top notch and so is the staff. I have been coming here for years for casual dinner or date night. The setting is beautiful and my wife and I got married here. The wedding was PERFECT in every category. The staff is CAN DO, professional and helpful in every category. I would recommend this place for an event, dinner or casual night. You will always be happy with the outcome.

Yelp
OMG *Carrots* are amazingly delicious! As well as Cauliflower. The fireside smells hit you when you walk in. Cozy, tasty, reasonably priced. We are 60+ year old gals giving this place a 5-star review.
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
Amazing place! Owner Miles has hired a delightful staff who treat customers like gold. Their food is high quality and inventive, and their menu is quite small so guests don't have the spend all their time reading the menu and more time drinking an Old Fashioned made by Miles himself. They have a ton of weddings there too and you can even rent the upper room. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
The Raddichio was to die for. The pizza were superb. We'll be back to try their pasta and margherita pizza.

Diana T.

Yelp
There was a slight wait for a table for us, but well worth it. Service was exceptional and the food delightful. Ambiance certainly matched the wonderful service as well. We would recommend this place to anyone wanting a great experience in dining Oregon style.

Ashley A.

Yelp
Good food! Good service. The menu is easy casual Italian. It is a cozy neighborhood restaurant that caters to the locals.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a few months... It's clean, professional, warm and romantic. My cousin and I shared a couple personally scissor-cut pies and a salad of delicious lemon-based dressing radicchio. When it appeared the 'za might take longer than expected due to how busy it was on this Friday evening, Firehouse blessed us with (recommended!) fried cauliflower. The meal was as wood-fire oven novelty as it was tasty. My hunger doubled upon entering and smelling this fine aroma. The service was prompt. Microbrew possessed Heater Allen and Pfriem. Well-balanced ingredients. Cloth napkins. Water aplenty. And foil wrap to-go. Enjoy the high ceilings, mature crowd, full bar, and nearly-elegant ambiance in this special over hundred-year-old-firehouse.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
This food was some of the best Italian food I've had yet! Service was wonderful as well!

Yelp
Stopped in on a Saturday evening. Our party of three was greeted and seated immediately. We ordered the arancini appetizer, it was small (3 arancini) but oh so good. Perfectly crispy on the outside with just enough sauce on the plate. Two of of shared the Margherita pizza while our teenage son ordered a burger with fries. Everything was fresh and tasted like it was made with quality ingredients. For dessert my son and I shared a chocolate pot de creme, a light creamy chocolate creme topped with toasted marshmallow and graham cracker crumbs.

Suzanne G.

Yelp
One of my favorite Portland restaurants. It has a great atmosphere and the food is always delicious. Like most restaurants it has gotten pretty expensive so I can't afford to go much anymore, but I dream of the wood fired mussels.

Yelp
So I want to really start with what is good about this place. The building itself it really cool. I love the red Firehouse building. The patio area is really cute and really nice to sit and enjoy the weather in the summer time. The staff. From the cheery hostess to the waiters, everyone was just so nice. Great team and they made me like this place. The food. Ok so not all of the food was great but what was good was pretty tasty. So now the bad. The food that was tasty was really over priced and seemed to be lacking....like perhaps spaghetti to go with the meatballs? As a matter of fact, there was only one dish that included pasta and it was the Cavatelli dish. My older daughter had that as she was craving pasta and that was actually the reason why we searched for Italian and found this place. I just didn't feel like it was worth it for $17. Nor did I feel like $17 was a good price for some meatballs that didn't even come with pasta. So that is a personal financial matter of preference as maybe someone else doesn't mind. Now my last issue is very similar to another review I read. The pizza.....oh the pizza. We had the Fennel Sausage pizza and when it arrived, it was about personal sized and I'm not certain why there was a pool of liquid in the middle of it. Some of the other photos here on yelp didn't have that and I see that the ones that posted photos of their pizza seemed to brag that it was so spot on, but not ours. The outside of this creation was slightly charred, but the inside was a puddle and when we cut it, I was left holding a charred crust while the rest of the slice just lay there with the contents sliding right off. So although all of those other things were nice about the Firehouse, at the end of the night....the food just didn't cut it for me. Maybe it will for you?

Yelp
It was our first time at the Firehouse and it won't be the last. This is our new favorite pizza place! The location is really cool, the service was very friendly and we enjoyed the food and the drinks very much. We ordered the cheese plate, the mushroom pizza, pepperoni pizza, the margherita and the pizza special coming out fresh and crispy out of the wood fired pizza oven. There are many other Italian inspired dishes to choose from. Make sure to reserve a table through their website! We'll be back for sure.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
This rating would be much lower if it were based on atmosphere alone. Too many tiny tables crammed into a tight space so you can be bumped into at least a few times during your meal. No place to set things like your purse down and you feel as if staff is really close to you all the time if you're seated near the counter. About the only decent place to sit is in the back corner. But then there's the service. It goes up for the friendly, prompt, and attentive servers here. They definitely make a difference. Then of course the food is amazing, bringing us up even more. They have several signature cocktails, beers, and wine to choose from. They also have house made soda. Can't say it had much of a peach flavor, but it was still a really delicious beverage. Night and light. We were contemplating meatballs for an appetizer, and then I saw some so the decision was made. 3 large meatballs in plenty of sauce with lots of gooey cheese on top. Great way to start a meal. We opted for a couple of wood fired pizzas. They offer some unique flavor combinations. We got the butternut squash, and potato and bacon. It was hard deciding which one we liked more. My partner has never cut pizza with scissors and he found that kind of fun. Crust was soft and tasty. The pizza reheats again at home just fine too. They have a beautiful patio area that would be really nice during better weather. It's been a really long time since I've been here and I'm glad we returned.

Yelp
I have been here enough times where a review is needed. We went there Wednesday night and we usually enjoy the food but the service can be off putting at times. Not so this night. After being under new ownership the bar counter was open,as most times before you couldn't ever sit there. The bar counter is my favorite spot to sit at, as you usually get great conversation, and a lot of times you have an eye into the kitchen, which I'm keen on. Miles was our man this night. He provided the best service we have had here. We had the our usual caesar salad, fried cauliflower, and this time a margherita pizza. We topped it off with the ricotta doughnuts, chocolate ice cream with caramel sauce. As I mentioned before the food has always been good and now tonight the service matched and even exceeded the food. Thank you Firehouse and Miles. Good eating.

Yelp
Came here (our second attempt after restaurant week) on a weekday right at 5 to catch happy hour. We each enjoyed a glass of wine, and the cauliflower- my god please try this simple but perfect dish. Also tried the margarita pizza- literally the perfect true Italian style pizza. So content with our meal, and a great value for happy hour.

Yelp
The good: I love the atmosphere of this place. It's a really lovely, cozy space to hang out and eat dinner. Also, the service was good as was dessert. I find that Portland doesn't have a lot of restaurants with great desserts, but my friend and I were very happy with the dessert that we shared. The OK: Both of us thought our entrees were decent, and the fries that were served on the side were pretty tasty and perfectly crispy. The bad: The cauliflower was so over salted. It would have been delicious had they toned down the salt a little. Then, we ordered bread and butter, and both my friend and I thought the butter smelled and tasted like goat cheese. We asked, and we were told that it was just whipped cow's milk butter with a little added salt (and again extremely salty). I am having a hard time believing that it was cow's milk. Regular butter is delicious, and this was just...not...

S M.

Yelp
EVERYTHING was on point. Beets and cauliflower apps were fantastic. Pizza and pasta delicious and excellent drinks with a "birthday pour" (very generous in size). We will be back often.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
OMG, the family meatloaf dinner is fantastic! And plenty of it, too. Nice people at the order window who seem super excited about what they are doing. Online ordering is simple enough. Pay close attention to the ordering rules. As of today they have a 4p cutoff for same-day pickup.

V M.

Yelp
Food was amazing, we've been coming here for years.. the service on the other hand was messy, rude and rushed and just felt like we were putting her out. She wasn't friendly and more like a disgruntled robot. Customer service doesn't suit some people I get that but sadly for our special family gathering she made it rushed and uncomfortable and didn't get the orders right. It's not that hard to be kind and genuine.
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
One of the best places to get pizza in town. Really good red sauce and great service
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
This is a nice cozy restaurant in Winter and big overhead doors and patio are welcoming on nice Summer evenings. This truly is an old Firehouse built at the turn of the century when pumper rigs still may have been pulled by horses. Food is very well prepared and nice selection of pizzas and other non Italian entries. I had an amazing Trout entre' with a aioli pesto that was really delicious. My wife had the Porkchop with caramelized onion. Both generous portions and served hot and delicious. Its tough to say I'll be back soon with so many choices in our neighborhood.. But glad I made it this time!!
google avatar

Yelp
Without knowing much about the history of this Italiano Pizzeria, we stumbled into this red bricked restaurant on a weekday evening in search of a good dinner. Upon arriving I noticed the outside patio area which was really cute and surrounded by mini string lights. You could smell the aroma of pizza as soon as you walked in. The lighting inside was dim and the ambiance was peaceful. Perfect for a date night. As for the food, I would say I was just a tad bit disappointed with my choice. There were several options on the menu, but the description on some of the plates on the menu were a bit confusing. Our waitress was friendly, and seemed to be knowledgeable so it was no fault of hers, or the restaurant. I should've just asked more questions. I chose to go with the Firehouse Meatballs with Tomato and Basil Braised Green Beans which the waitress said was a good choice. When it arrived in front my face it was just a heap of big Meatballs on a plate with a side of bread. For the price, I think I was expecting more to the dish. The meatballs were just okay. Next time, if there is a next time, I will try the pizza. The couple next to us ordered pizza and it looked very appetizing. Overall, Firehouse is worth checking out if you are ever in the area.

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant. Life firewood pizza and their happy hour is fantastic!

Yelp
When I pass this place on my way for drinks and dinner elsewhere, I look longingly at it but can't bring myself to try round 2 of the lake of oil pizza that is their signature dish. I love the building--I just wished the food and the experience matched it. As for the lake of olive oil pizza, I've never had anything like it--and it's a deliberate move on the kitchen's part. If there were such thing as pizza aversion therapy, I'm certain it would involve this restaurant and lots of olive oil. There are other things on the menu, of course. The small plates of veggies are wonderful--the fried cauliflower was pitch perfect. And I really like the wine selection, but I sincerely shudder at the thought of their oily pizza. Judging from the reviews, I'm not alone in my Lake o' Oil consternation, but it may be someone else's version of outstanding pizza. Meanwhile, I'll admire the historic building as I walk toward Tamale Boy or any place without a heavy hand for oil.

Yelp
Came here on a recommendation from a friend when we needed a kid friendly casual dining option in Portland that was still completely delicious. Firehouse restaurant totally fits that bill. The location was very easy to get to right off the freeway. Parking was super easy too and the location is in a super adorable area of Portland where it is totally walkable and family friendly. The ambience of Firehouse is casual and warm and inviting. The menu had fantastic choices, something for everyone. We ordered three pizzas with both girls getting the margarita pizza, one with basil and one without. Both were cooked to perfection, with a delightful wood fire crispness and excellent flavor. I ordered and enjoyed a butternut squash with balsamic vinegar and goat cheese pizza. It was one of the best pizzas I have ever enjoyed. The only recommendation I would add is that I would have preferred a bit more garlic, but that's because I love garlic probably more than the average. The prices were very fair as well. I would absolutely return here on a later trip to Portland.

Yelp
Went for a later weeknight dinner with two friends and we all chose the "let the kitchen choose" option, which was absolutely fantastic. I was the only vegetarian in the group, but the spread was very veg-friendly and also allowed my meat-eating friends to enjoy some of the other non-veg options. We had a ton of delicious starters- notably, the fried cauliflower and beet salad were fantastic. The entrees included pasta, pizza, and steak, all of which were delicious. The server was incredibly nice and friendly, checking on us the perfect amount but also allowing us to enjoy our evening on the patio. She mentioned they had just added the "let the kitchen choose" option to the menu, so they're still figuring out the best proportion levels, and honestly we probably got a little more than we needed (which we told them), but it was all delicious. Ended with an olive oil cake that was a perfect, light end to the night. The patio had such a lovely ambiance, too. I'd definitely go back!

Yelp
Everything we had was exceptional. Drinks: Negroni, coat and tails, dirty martini, and old fashioned. All were fantastic Sides, roasted corn, and roasted beans the corn was a take on the classic Mexican street corn and AMAZING. The beans were roasted to perfection. The pizza: we had the fennel sausage pizza and to go with it we had the Cerasuelo di Vittoria. Top that off with the lovely staff and you have a wonderful evening. Thanks Firehouse 28

Yelp
I've heard of how good Firehouse is for a long time. I finally was able to go the first day of Portland Dining Month this year. They have 2 types - $25 if you have pizza as your main entree, or $29 if it's non-pizza. While I chose the latter, a few of my friends picked the pizza option and we bartered throughout the meal. Every starter that I tried (cauliflower & brocolli in particular) were excellent. The winter salad was a decent salad, nothing spectacular. My hangar steak entree was also okay. The major negative was the pizza (and I thought they're famous for their pizza). All 3 types of pizza I tried was soggy in the middle. Slightly chewy crust and just not good. The toppings were good though (fennel sausage in particular). In all, I'm disappointed with the pizza - but looking at the many 5 stars reviews, perhaps it was an off night. If it were just for food, I would rate it a 3 stars. But the service was very good, I'm bumping it to a 4.

Yelp
Words cannot describe the food that comes out of the kitchen at Firehouse. This review is over. I'm kidding of course. I will try to use words to describe the food that comes out of the kitchen at Firehouse. Why else would I be on Yelp? A friend (also from the east coast and who lives here) told me about this place many many moons ago. She swore by the pizza here. Said it was the best she had in Portland. Before we left to come here yesterday I asked her again about the pizza and how it compares to a place like Apizza Scholls. She stepped back a bit and said they were number 1 and number 2 in her book of pizza in Portland. We had a 7p reservation (thank you www.opentable.com) and were seated within a few minutes of 7p. I was actually surprised the place wasn't more packed on a Saturday night from some of the other reviews I read. It isn't a big space so reservations are the smart way to go. Within a few minutes of sitting the woman who sat us welcomed us and told us who our server would be. Very friendly people here. An extra star for that, but I can only give 5. There were 4 of us in our party and at first we thought about getting two pies and splitting them along with a few salads. Discussing it a bit more, the friend who recommended this place and I ended up getting a small plate, a salad and a pie and splitting that between us. I was worried it wouldn't be enough food, but it was fine. The portions aren't huge, but definitely not small. Course 1: Small plate-beets with salsa verde and pistachio ($5). If you like beets you should do yourself a favor and get over here for these beets. They give you 4 nice sized beets and they were just about perfect. There really isn't anything more I can say about these beets. Course 2: Salad-unfortunately their online menu doesn't have the salad we had listed. I'll try to go by memory. It was a shaved asparagus salad with lettuce and bread with a citrus inspired dressing ($8). I don't know why I went with the word inspired, but I felt it and I'm sticking by it. Course 3: Pizza-the course I was waiting for. With sopressata, olives, fresh mozzarella and chili flake ($15). These pizzas are small enough to eat on ones own if you have a large appetite, but easy enough to share with someone if you have a few more dishes. The pizza comes out whole, so you have to cut it yourself. If you do the job correctly, you should get 6 slices out of it. It is on the par of more boutique pizza and less like a NY slice of pizza like Apizza Scholls gives you. The crust on this pizza reminded me of Naan. Very light and airy. You can tell that a lot of hard works goes into the construction of this pie. Thumbs up. I was speechless after the meal. With a beer and tip, my half of the bill (I owed my friend some money so I just paid for her meal) came out to $40 on the nose. Not a bad price to pay for top quality ingredients and a meal that I will speak fondly of until the next time I make it back.

Yelp
Firehouse knows how to feed a party. Reminiscing about our 5-course meal, I can't help but be reminded of the light, yet rich Bittersweet Deep Chocolate Torte. Let's not rush to dessert quite so soon... Our first course consisted of Warmed olives and Terre del Sole Aged Sheep's Milk Cheese on top Rosemary Crackers with Oregon Honey and Spanish Marcona Almonds. It was perfectly balanced; sweet, salty, crispy and crunch. Also arriving on the table was Roasted Beets with Walnuts and Bufala Ricotta Salata. The Bufala Ricotta was finely diced and mixed with the slightly sweet Roasted Beets. Firehouse did an excellent job in making this ordinary root vegetable shine. Tomato Braised Cannellini Beans and Toasted Bread Salsa rounded off the first course. Our second course began with a bountiful pile of Fennel Fritto and a side of House Cured Sardines. The Fennel Fritto was unique and the sardines were quite fishy. However, the winner of those course went to the Wood Oven Iron Skillet Mussels with Drawn Butter. Seafood and butter, do I need to say more? Our third course, pizza and more pizza, came in two forms, Spicy House Fennel Sausage, Onion and Fresh Mozzarella and Margherita. The tender sausage paired well with the slightly crunchy onion and melted fresh mozzarella. The sauce was very good and the crust was tangy. Unfortunately, both pizzas were soggy and difficult to hold. This might be circumvented in the future, if the pizzas were served on something other than a ceramic or porcelain plate. Romaine Hearts with Lemon-Anchovie Vinaigrette and Shaved Pecorino accompanied the pizzas. The Romaine salad was simple and enjoyed, as it was completely devoured. The fourth course came with House made Meatballs Braised with Tomato, Rosemary and Lacinato Kale and Rotisserie Chicken with Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes and Arugula Salad. I preferred the Chicken, as it was juicy and very flavorful. The arugula on top the mashed potatoes were a nice touch. Lastly, fifth course takes it us back to the beginning of this review. Arriving for the final course consisted of Bittersweet Deep Chocolate Torte and Warm Bartlett Pear Crostata. The chocolate torte was by far the winner. I tend to prefer the fruit choice whenever dessert comes around, but this time the Chocolate Torte was the winner. It came off as very light, but the flavor was very rich. The service was very good for a party of 30. We were closely seated in a room upstairs that got to be very warm by the end of the night. Firehouse is in a beautiful building with a spacious patio for outdoor dining. I recommend the Rotisserie Chicken and Chocolate Torte. Avoid the pizza, unless it can be guaranteed soggy-less.
