The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"In 2005, Raymond Hou started cooking cumin-spiced lamb skewers at the Chinatown Night Markets with just a barbecue stove and a friend for help. Over the years, he’s charred thousands of skewers and gained a following via the Firepop food truck that he operates with partner Alina Van. In early 2024, the couple opened a permanent Firepop site in Newtown. The original lamb dish is still on the menu, levelled up by two decades of preparation, alongside dishes that showcase Australian producers (and waste-minimizing invention). One great example: the signature panna cotta formed from leftover buttermilk, flavored with strawberries pickled in white balsamic brine and blanketed with Rio Vista Olives’ acclaimed Hardy’s Mammoth extra virgin olive oil from South Australia. Vibe check: The award-winning restaurant evokes a sleek, upscale Tokyo yakitori joint." - Lee Tran Lam

I visited Firepop for an early birthday dinner and general celebration of all things with my son. Our reservation at a chef’s table was an enthralling window into the expert preparation of our Classic Set Menu. What an entry for my son into fine dining! The service was impeccable: friendly, attentive and unobtrusive. The menu was exquisite, and each dish perfectly presented and balanced. Our tastebuds were singing with every bite. The servings were more than ample. We had very full bellies part way through service. The atmosphere was wonderful, with ambient lighting and Latin beats. The set menu was incredibly good value for the quality and quantity of food paired with wonderful service. P.S. thank you so much the delicious birthday pop! Highly recommended!

Nice dining experience with very good service and great selection of wines. For me the food did not cut it. The course was too fatty and overly charcoal flavour on most of the meat. This spot was hyped up so much to me but the food did not live up to the hype. Decent place, nothing special

Put this one on the List. What a menu, what choice and where to stop. Had the Classic Menu $80 and added other incredible dishes such as the scallops and the pork belly. The staff were knowledgeable and knew what they were serving and extremely polite. Have to give a mention to the Red Snapper from NZ not to miss.

My partner and I recently enjoyed a delightful Thursday evening at Firepop in Enmore. The staff were exceptional—warm, friendly, and impressively knowledgeable about every aspect of the menu. The menu showcased a variety of dishes cooked over fire, each presented with care and precision. The pacing of the courses was spot-on. Overall, our visit to Firepop was thoroughly enjoyable. The combination of excellent food, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere made for a memorable evening. We look forward to returning soon and exploring more of what Firepop has to offer.

Highly recommend! I wasn’t sure how many options there would be as a pescatarian, but Firepop had plenty to choose from — a good mix of vegetarian dishes, fish, and even fresh oysters (which I pre-ordered). The ambience was wonderful, the food excellent, and the service overall very good. Our server was a young man who seemed a little new and nervous, but he genuinely tried his best and was attentive. I really enjoyed the experience and will definitely be going back.

The food is good but for what it is it’s expensive. The corn rib entree was packed with flavour for sure. I had the pork belly, lamb and the octopus skewers and they were all packed with flavour and cooked well. The iceberg lettuce salad added a nice freshness. Absolutely zero vibe in the upstairs area. I was seated all by myself and told the downstairs was booked although when walking through it was empty and when I left all the tables were empty except for three seats at the bar. When I mentioned it, a while later I was told a place at the chefs table opened up. But once people are settled, what’s the point in moving and trudging up and down step stairs that are super sketchy? I feel like this needs to be mentioned on the booking or the website especially for people that may be a little older or have difficulty navigating stairs. The whole seating was just weird the areas are mismatched - bar area and walkway is slick modern, the seating and tables are a mix of modern and French country bistro. And the carpet just makes the place feel run down and worn, the whole aesthetic is all over the place. Overall it’s the food is good but pricey. The service was fine, server was sweet but a bit pushy, over checking if I wanted to order more food or drinks. The vibe is low upstairs, seats are uncomfortable (maybe the booth / bench is better). Music a bit too loud. Downstairs and the bar section looked much more slick and cool. I feel like this is a one and done situ as no matter how tasty the food is, if the atmosphere is lacking it’s hard to justify a repeat visit.

Spent a wonderful time celebrating my husband’s birthday here, just the two of us. A big thank you to the restaurant for preparing the snowflake beef cake for him—it was delicious and had a great sense of ceremony! The staff were very friendly, though there’s still room for improvement in customer coordination and attention to detail. Overall, the food was amazing, and we’ll definitely be back! A fantastic restaurant—keep up the great work, we’re rooting for you!
