Got a poke bowl for 13.99 and was disappointed there was no avocado or ginger, the label said it had it but there wasn’t any. I left for work so i don’t know if they would’ve made it right. So disappointed. I also couldn’t see into the bowl because there were lots of water droplets. I could make out the tuna, lettuce, cucumber and cabbage. Also no Tobiko, mango or wasabi or seaweed!!!! I went from 4 stars to 3 to 2 just now as I noticed. Now I’m super upset. 13.99 with a false label?! It was delicious tuna and well cooked rice. I like this store. Newly dislike the lies on the label of my poke bowl! Wish I noticed sooner! How upsetting! And I tried to look into all the bowls! They all looked the same with the water droplets thickly underneath the plastic top.

First Alternative | Natural Foods Co-op South Store is always a treat to visit! Their prices are very affordable, and the quality of their foods and ingredients is outstanding. I especially love their sandwiches, hot/salad bar, and sushi station–it’s always fresh and delicious. The produce selection is top-notch, and you can really tell the care that goes into sourcing. On top of that, the employees are consistently friendly, welcoming, and incredibly helpful. For anyone living in Corvallis or the surrounding area–or for anyone who is health-conscious and values supporting local–this place is a gem. Highly recommend!

I love to support local when I can, especially fresh foods. Im just glad I found a place that has these delicious foods! Sandwiches, pasta, salads, fresh sushi... there's something new to try every day

This is a weekly stop for us. We miss the convenience of shopping into our own bag however, we understand the reasoning. We are glad they added another flavor of So Delicious yogurt to the shelves, love that they have Ezekiel bread, and appreciate the amount of Field Day items they carry. The staff is great, we’ve never once had an issue with any staff! We enjoy the familiar faces.

Certainly do NOT recommend this location. Upon entering I was approached (still where the carts are, I wasn't even in the store) by a heavier woman with braided hair, who asked if my animal is a service animal. Obviously, I said yes, and she side -eyes me and goes "Okaaay." Very condescending and unprofessional. No customer service whatsoever. I wasn't asked if I needed help finding anything, or even greeted. I left feeling awkward and kind of pissed off, especially since I heard her mention the interaction to a co worker. Act your wage my dear, and try to treat all people with respect, especially if you have reason to believe they're disabled. Thank you. 0 stars. Terrible "service".

Good quality food. Organic. Local. Good prices. Bulk spices and tea. U-grind nut butters. Wonderful selection of wines, both local and from far away. Gluten free IPA ! Seasonal and imported fruit and local veggies. Hot sandwich bar at lunch & dinner. Salad bar with tempeh and other vegan options! Nice selection of alcohol free drinks.

You can always find great food & beverages here. We recently re-newed our co-op membership. As a local MR you can recycle big styrafoam for a modest fee at the store & they take cork from wine bottles. Also convenient location S. town to recycle many items at the adjacent recycling center.

One of the best natural foods stores Ive been to!!! Their hot bar and salad bar foods are fresh, the baked goods are incredibly delicious, the store has a lot of variety of products, and they have a cold by-the-pound area that includes beautiful red miso!!!!

The food is fresh, local, and delicious. It is a little expensive. But that is to be expected considering the organic nature. It has a very "hippy" vibe so if you don't quite fall into that "category" you may feel just a bit out of place. Still, I became a member as soon as I moved to Corvallis. It's an awesome place to get local groceries, and fresh, healthy, and delicious hot meals.

Great staff, and an incredible bulk section! I look forward to this stop everyone I'm in town. Definitely shop here and join in on the vitality being offered.

First Alternative Natural Foods Co-op in Corvallis is one of the finest natural food stores, grocery stores, and Food Co-ops on the planet. I have been vegan 15 years and lived in CO, OR, CA, and now OR again. Davis has a great Co-op and Rainbow Grocery is great in San Francisco, but right here in Corvallis the Co-op sets the bar for every other place! I went here yesterday w/ my friend from out of town and in her rental car from my abode in Eugene. If I had a car I would frequent this place every week from Eugene and still plan to go here at least a month. The bulk section is giant. They have three kinds of hummus in bulk, vegenaise in bulk, and even daiya in bulk. Raw almond butter, several kinds of miso, and heaps of other amazing things in bulk. While Sundance in Eugene has a better hot and cold bar than here I feel that First Alternative sets the bar high from giving customers a bean to donate to 5 different local charities to using grey water to having amazing local organic sweet potatoes to 5 lbs of organic local potatoes to heaps of greens. This Co-op was featured in vegan body builder Robert Cheeke's documentary w/ Vega founder Brendan Brazier and performance artist Tonya Kay. This co-op kicked off in 1970 with Oregon State university students and Corvallis locals helps to show case eveything that is wonderful about the Willamette Valley. I still remember it from my childhood as a hippy hangout with Mom & Dad buying organic bulk grain, fruit and vegetables. These days the hippies are now well heeled smart consumers that have continued to grow and expand the place into the heart of the community. Strong focus on locally grown produce and goods. The Wine section is the best I've ever seen at a Co-op with lots of local Pinot Noirs and other organically grown choices. The cheese case showcases some of Oregon's best dairy farms and practices. Oregon was one of the first to have Organic Tilth labelling laws that are now recognized as some of the best in the nation. If you care about what you eat, and you like to eat locally then Corvallis First Alternative Co-op is worth checking out. They have 2 locations, but the original is just South of downtown.

My mom took me to this co-op when I was eight-years old, and I've loved it ever since, through all of its changes and growing pains. It remains my favorite coop, decades later. It's one of my favorite places in Corvallis partly because this place strives to educate as well as provide quality alternative products. Having grown up with this coop is one of the reasons I'm careful about what I eat and how I clean my home and tend my yard. I only travel to Corvallis 2-3 times a year now, but I always stop at First Alternative Co-op when I'm in town. It feels like home.

Great selection of cheeses and love their fresh made hummus!! Great hot and cold bar for the meal on the go too.

Their tiki masala is impeccable. Such rich flavor and creamy texture. A perfect balance of spices. I am in awe. This is my go to meal and has yet to disappoint me. I always pair it with a yellow rice to compliment. I highly reccomend.

I was a co-op owner for ten years, but I cashed in my membership at the end of 2010. Why? Because the co-op board spent far too much time writing about why "good" Corvallis residents would never shop at Trader Joe's or Market of Choice, instead of addressing those areas where the competition might have an edge. The co-op has had problems for years with poor customer service, and their selection of certain items isn't great. In addition, after a nearly tied vote on whether to permit co-op customers to order items not carried by the store, items offered by distributors but not carried in store, they decided NOT to do so, spouting off about conscience. I'd rather not have to go to several different stores to do my shopping, so if I can't order things from the co-op, I'll just go to Market of Choice for anything I can't get at the farmers' market.

I really want to like this place, but I just can't. I just moved to town and live close to here and I gave it many chances, but I just always end up leaving in a bad mood. Here's the thing: it's pretentious. I know what you're thinking: I don't understand the world of natural foods and that they come at a higher cost. Not true. I have been a member for years at a co-op in the town I moved from. For its large size, somehow it just always manages to not have what I need (this week I wanted basic salt crystals, not black Hawaiian foofoo crystals at $40/lb-- you'd think they'd have that). The staff is ridiculously apathetic that I feel like I'm bothering them and I'm lucky if I get one second of eye contact at the register. The organization if the products is just awful, too. It just really leaves something to be desired. It's not the friendly, neighborhood grocery destination you'd want it to be. A place like Corvallis could do much better.

It's like Subway, but with a staff that doesn't listen and a wait bordering on starvation. It's a grocery store and I'm not reviewing that here, only the deli where you can pick and choose to have a sandwich made for you. When you have a sandwich made they give you a little card and you mark off the things you want on it then hand it to the deli staff. From that moment, the handoff, to a cold sandwich, had to be twenty minutes. And all wrong. And awful. Veggies I hadn't checked off (carrots, sprouts) appeared on the sandwich. Veggies I had (Tomatoes) didn't make a guest appearance. I assume the card is right there with the sandwich lady, I handed it to her. I checked things off. It doesn't seem like something that can be screwed up without some effort. She wasn't helping anyone else, only me, so I know I didn't get someone else's sandwich. To add insult to injury, my sandwich was slathered with spicy mustard, which I requested, but so much as to make it soggy and overly spicy. It was, for all intents and purposes, inedible. I don't know who would ever in their right mind think that much mustard was a good idea. It was so potent...I...I can't even describe it. I don't even know if you'd believe me if I told you how the thing swam in spicy mustard. Insane. (Yes, I bucked up and ate it. And, my God, EVERY. BITE. HURT.) I'm really bummed. Their other location has some food, but not a fresh sandwich deli. So I was stoked. Too bad the execution was all off. I'm sure this is solely on who made my sandwich and not indicative of quality on every visit...right? So, what did I learn? I don't like people being mad at me, so I don't complain. I'd rather eat a sandwich that causes physical pain than return it.

This review is in regards to the deli section known as Feast Alternative. Unless you're a real hard core "local business supporter" and are really into organic foods and such, I would not recommend ordering sandwiches from the deli. I mean, the staff was very friendly and knowledgable, but OMG, I just paid $8 for something I could have easily made at home. Seriously, the sandwich was ordinary sized bread, with lots (and I mean LOTS) of veggie filler, and a smattering of meat and cheese. The pickle had an odd, bitter taste, and the chips were bland. It didn't even come with a drink. The salad bar looked fresh, and the hot dishes and soup looked very interesting, but again, high prices for small portions. They do offer free samples and the pad thai salad I tried was very tastey. If I could give a half star this would be a 1.5 and not a 2. Seems like you're paying a lot just to feel good about yourself, rather than walk away with a good, full feeling.

It's tough for me to review the co-op since it's the only place I shop. The bulk section is ridiculous... very good compared to other co-ops I've been to, from Florida to Hawaii. Same with produce. The grocery and non-foods stuff is about what you'd expect. They have lots of disc golf stuff, though! Unfortunately, as others have noted, the deli section is lacking. Unless you want cheese, because oh man, do they have a lot of cheese! But for grab-and-go stuff, it's not good. In fact, it's the worst of any co-op I've been to, including smaller ones. The recipes are uninspired, and it's not that tasty. One star off for the deli, and I'd take another off for the management... It's... not good. At all. Cronyism and the like. But since customers don't have to deal with it, I can't possibly take another star off. Bottom line: There's no reason to shop anywhere else in Corvallis if you want to support local businesses and farmers.

NOTE: I am reviewing this place as an out-of-towner. Please consider my comments in that light. I'm a reviewer for people who might swing through, but won't become members. I like this grocery store. The produce section is definitely my favorite. Corvallis has an exceptional number of organic farms for a town of its size, and many seem to be represented here. The help is also good, particularly at check-out. I must confess, though, there don't seem to be many people available for assistance on the floor. The pantry, health, and beauty sections leave something to be desired. Selection is about 75% of what I'm used to in stores of this type, prices are about 125% of what I expect. I'm also surprised at the overall lack of meat/seafood and bread, especially on my last two stops. Something to keep in mind if you're passing through town and hoping to buy something to cook for dinner.

This is the best little co-op in Oregon. After my second visit, I bought into ownership. They have the best produce in town, and a fine selection of local meats and cheeses. Their deli and hot bar is delicious, and I can always find a bottle of wine here. I live in Eugene now, and I wish they would expand down south. I miss this place.

So much love. So many mixed feelings. I like the first guy's review of this because its pure sentiment. That's what co-ops are good at. They not only appeal to your savvy tastes but also make you feel better about consuming. Example: First Alternative Co-op spends a good amount of time on finding if chocolates in products and bars are pooled from slave-beans. I'm a pretty progressive dude, but much of this reminds me of the "smug" episode(s) of South Park. That said, I detect some waffling on important issues - particularly on meat. They have amazing, local grass-finished beef alongside commercial bacon you can buy at Fred Mayer. If it was me running the place I'd worry less about commodity abuses and more about the meat from (or not from) my backyard. But the bulk section alone makes this place irreplaceable. Most everything you come across is pretty fresh, high turnover, deep and diverse stock of spices, beans, grains, etc. You'll find things that will elude you, but nothing too bad. I love the bulk mozzarella. Nibs! Service in Western Oregon is particularly bad (noone can really figure out why) and this place follows. I consider a good visit one I deem cutesy - you make some yuppie smalltalk, get your things, on your way. Other times they screw things up (pot smokers working at the Co-op? Not possible) or are just lazy and refuse to do things that would easily fall under their job titles. Service is poor, but overall this place is worth it for some stuff you'll have to look high and low for elsewhere. Beware of terrible service, and don't trust most employee's answers. Also prepare yourself for that all-knowing, "you're an idiot" condescension we all know so well out here. Don't get roped into the "owner" program - you pay money, get no real discount to speak of, and they put the money back in the business instead of paying dividends. Good business principle. Bad "cooperative" mentality.

First Alternative is the place to go for organic, gluten free, etc. Its a bit pricy, but the bulk and sales help keep things reasonable. They really do well keeping things local too. My favorite at the southtown location is the deli. The sweet potato quesadillas, the hot food, and the cheeses and meats are really good. Love the deli selection and being able to pick up something good and healthy on the way home for a quick dinner. #corvsmb Oh, the kids play area is great as well. Go check it out and don't forget your bags!

First Alternative is THE local organic grocery chain. While it's great to belong to a local co-op, this one has plenty for the casual visitor, or OSU student, etc. They have a great assortment of organic products, especially with locally grown fruits&vegetables. It's a friendly place. South Corvallis tends to be a sketchier part of town, but First Alternative uplifts the atmosphere. This is the place to go for difficult to find vegan/vegetarian products, one can even find vegetarian Pemmican, Tiger's Milk bars, that kind of thing.

I have never had a problem with this store. The people are helpful and friendly and they have an amazing selection, considering the size of the building. The prices are totally within the normal range expected for organic food. Don't complain to the store. Complain to Congress for subsidizing conventionally sprayed "food." This is how a grocery store should be, and I am glad they did not go out of business when Market of Choice moved in.

Great spot to stock up on your groceries for the week, a bottle of wine or a six-pack of local beer, or grab a quick snack or dinner to go. They have a salad bar and a good selection of pre-made dinner items (quinoa salad, tempeh, baked & sliced chicken breast, etc) along with some hot foods. There's also a nice bulk foods section. Staff was quite nice. The lady at the register humored me as I attempted to get their card reader to accept Apple Pay (they do accept Apple Pay). Also, this store is the best kind of grocery store--a coop. 5 stars.

Great store! The place is clean and well-organized. The produce looks amazing, and I like that they have locally produced items for sale as well. Unlike a lot of natural foods groceries, First Alternative had very reasonable pricing. Too bad they aren't located in more places, but then it would probably ruin the concept.

First alternative is so cool. I wish you'd open up in Lebanon. I had shopped here for many years cause it was so close to my old house. One day I was talking to the vitamin helper wondering why they didn't carry my favorite protein drink in the chocolate flavor. He explained that it wasn't fair trade. OMG. I had no Idea someone was doing all that research for us. You're the best.

En route to the coast, our caravan stopped at First Alternative Co-Op to pick up essentials such as Newman-O's, Tempeh Bang Bang, and a "party pig." Said "Party Pig" is a mini keg shaped like a pig, full of local beer, and has a $20 refundable deposit. Tempeh Bang Bang was new to me, and ohhh what an incredible dish! You can find it in the salad bar, it's like a spicy tempeh picnic salad of sorts. Another great dish from the deli is the Thai salad: cold noodles with a peanut sauce, tofu, and veggies. Yum! Retail rrices were steeper than I'm used to at my own local co-ops, so I'm docking a star. It's hard telling when I'll return considering it's ~2 hours away, but I really enjoyed the deli food, so any excuse to drive South will do.

I prefer the north store which has more selections for eating in. This store has it all, but traffic is horrendous getting in and out, especially during rush hour.

Member for eight years, and I just love this place. If all hippies were this competent, the world would actually be a better place. Pear tarts are awesome... Everything they make is awesome. The store is clean and well maintained. You can recycle just about anything. The employees are great, and it's a co-op. I didn't know I could have a favorite grocery store until this place.

This is a very special place with an awesome selection of LOCAL produce and products, as well as organic and natural foods. I love the small feel of the stores, (and now dread going in a big box store for when I need other items of goods.) It is friendly, people talk, food is shared, and the deli food and treats are delicioso! I feel really lucky to have a store like this in my town, and better, a Co-op. And if you like sales, they always have specials and sales going on, so for all those who say they are expensive seem to be looking at the "assumed perception" of a natural food store rather than the actual products... Yay for Co-ops and awesome people!

The store itself has a great variety in products and friendly staff. However, I sampled three of the vegan deli items and none of them were up to par. We bought the pad thai, which I would not recommend. The cilantro was too powerful. Just was not good. Also tried the cheesy pasta and tofu bites, both not worth purchasing. They did have one redeeming in house product: the vegan peach Marion berry pie. Still a nice place to support.

Got some great food to go en route from the coast to Bend: vegetarian enchiladas and pork chile verde. Delicioso! Nice folks, great food, clean bathrooms. Definitely will stop here every time I'm passing through!

Overpriced and quickly becoming irrelevant. With Trader Joe's now in town half of the reasons why I would come here have now disappeared. Unless you have a specific need, i'd wait for the weekend and get it at the Farmer's Market or find it somewhere else.

Stopped in this health food store recently. It is very big and has lots of bulk items. Breads are from local bakers, large cheese section, milk from local dairy, and great produce selection. Definitely worth the stop. Prices were good for sale and some other items (other prices similar to whole foods) and the price marked is what everyone pays (the same for members/non members). Members get a dividend at the end of the year. Cost is $70 for a lifetime membership and is refundable..

Love this store! Haven't had the food at the little restaurant inside, but the store is awesome! Love the bulk section, local food choices, and organic offerings.

Excellent! Their deli selection made us very happy for both dinner and breakfast. Divine bakery treats (non-dairy, non-gluten). Great selection of local wines. Fun non-food items like locally made jewelry, clothes and major disc golf discs for sale. Had 2 different tempeh salads; both great (and I am an avid meat eater). Any time we swing back through this town, we'll stop here!

A great selection of healthy foods, local organic vegetables, wines, and an excellent deli. The salad and hot food bar always have good vegan options (as well as meat and dairy dishes) and is my go-to when I'm in town. Love this store!

They have a great selection of all the hippie food a person could ever need. They also donate a lot to charity, and let "owners" (patrons) vote on where the money goes. I would like to see them work on lowering prices. Good real food is a great goal, but allowing access to all working families is even better. Unfortunately, like most hippie stores, they sell a wide range of "homeopathic medicine" which is really of course, just very expensive sips of water.

It's a co-op. It has a wide selection of organic, local, delicious produce at better prices for organic than at other stores. It's got a bulk section. There are free wine tastings every Thursday. It's not quite The North Coast Co-op I used to take for granted down in Arcata, but it's damn good.

Bigger selection than their other location in some departments, about the same in others. I suppose I would be more likely to return to this one because of the variety, they were also having a free wine tasting tonight, which I guess they do on Fridays from 5-7. They had Spanish wines, along with cheese and salami to sample. Gotta love the freebies!

As a recent transplant from Alabama, I must admit that I love the First Alternative Natural Foods Co-Op (in fact, I fucking love Oregon all together). I shop here at least a few times a week as it's super close to my house and I'm never disappointed. For breakfast, I enjoy their fresh brewed coffee and a pastry. The ginger scones and peanut butter cookies are my favorite! For lunch, I love grabbing an egg salad sandwich from their fresh-made cooler options. They have a great salad bar and a warm food bar. They also have freshly made-to-order sandwich options at the deli bar, made by friendly ladies and gentleman. It can be a bit pricey, but you really get what you pay for.

had lunch here last weekend. delicious, unique, hot soups in deli section. I recommend the egg salad (made with tofu instead of eggs). I also enjoyed the quinoa, mint, parsley, cranberry salad. by bringing your own bag, you get a bean at checkout. You can put the bean in a bin supporting your favorite charity. nice seating area.

Pricey but good. They have products that you can't find everywhere. Store was clean and customer service was nice. This was my first visit. I went to grab a cold drink and a gift certificate for my sister. I live 20 miles away, so would not shop here all the time. I don't think I would even if I lived closer. I'm a deal seeker. . .. no real deals here. But don't get me wrong, nice place, nice store.

Whereas some of the items in this store are one-of-a-kind and cannot be found anywhere else in this town, you must watch out for the "pull dates" on edible items. Sometimes I have found out of date items on the shelf - I now watch for this as in the past, I have purchased moldy or deteriorated food before I realized it was out of date. I have notified staff of this problem, and was told to please let them know so they can pull it off the shelf. They say volunteers stock the shelves, so they can't always be sure they are doing the right thing. This being said, I have shopped here for years and most of the time, the products are of good quality, albeit expensive. I do like their policy of providing as much local product as possible and offering the origin of the product, especially chocolate which in other stores, comes from slave labor. The co-op only sells chocolate that has been certified, so you don't have to worry that slaves made it.

Thank goodness we have a place in town to buy decent milk in, in returnable glass bottles. A place to get good eggs, and only as many as we need. A place to get great, fresh, local produce at a VERY fair price (equivalent organic produce a Fred Meyer and Market of Choice is usually more expensive). A place to get bulk tea and herbs for much cheaper than the pre-packaged, stale stuff on other grocery stores' shelves. Most of all, thank goodness we have a place in town that does their homework! The co-op doesn't just rely on labels like "organic", "gluten free, and "fair trade" to justify charging more/ a fair price for the quality product. Since becoming a member in 2004, I have watched many popular items leave the shelves. For example- they quit carrying Rogue Chocolate Stout at least half a decade ago. The beer guy thoroughly explained that when the Co-op found out the farmers in Africa who provided the chocolate to Rogue were being taken advantage of, the co-op requested that Rogue change its supplier. When the brewery did not make the change, the co-op pulled the product (though they still carry other tasty Rogue beers). Ben and Jerrys ice cream lost it's place on the Co-op's shelves in a similar manner... and that one was surely a big money maker! While I often base my buying decisions on price, flavor, and habit, I truly respect the Co-op's purchasing decisions, and keep their ideals and research in the back of my mind when shopping, no matter which store I'm at. First Alternative may be an imperfect business, but it is worth supporting because it is truly a steward of change... not just for the bottom line like most local grocery stores, but for the better of the world and our local community!

They do virtually everything right. I trust them, too, which is huge in this untrustworthy world. They carry 95% of everything I need and they are always smiling. I can't possibly tell you how many times they've gone out of their way for me. And I use their great 10% discount every month. No, everyone won't love them. They aren't flashy, huge, glittery, packed with googa and hooha doodads. They're honest, real, and spectacularly original. They re my neighbors and friends. And their carrot cake is death-by-yummmmm.

Good people working as a community to bring the spirit of those Oregon pioneers alive through cooperation, community spirit, sustainability, sharing, creativity, and goodwill. Comments: food provided is the best available, including Organics, earth friendly, sustainable, ecology minded, recycling encouragement, low impact on the environment suggested, supporter of like minded organizations & community programs, and inspiration to children and an example of what society could look like -- is what the First Alternative Natural Foods Co-Op represents to society. They have also won many awards for there excellence as a food provider and community member. It is amazing what human beings can do if they are working together in a cooperative spirit for the common good.

I thought my local co-op would be in trouble when Market of Choice moved into town, but they still reign king when it comes to baked goods, healthy hot lunches, and sustainable business practices. Eat your heart out MOC!

We were visiting Corvallis. This is a great place to stop for breakfast or lunch. They have prepared breakfast and lunch items with a good selection for vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. The breakfast wraps are not made to order but the breakfast specific items along with yogurt and smoothies from the main store make for a very good meal. They have seating in the store and provide metal ware and cloth napkins for those eating in to reduce waste. We stayed in Corvallis for a week and ate here several times. Friendly people good food.

The Co-op is great for some things but they are way overpriced. Much better fruit and vegetables, at very reasonable prices, are available at the twice-weekly Farmer's Market that runs from April to November (as well as the Winter Market from January through March).
