Alison Roman’s Store in Upstate New York Curates the Cookbook Author’s Brand Into Something Buyable | Eater

"A small, carefully curated pantry shop in Bloomville, NY opened by Alison Roman in the lowest level of a building that previously housed a beloved local restaurant. The shop mixes local produce — potatoes and onions from Lucky Dog Farms, garlic from Star Route Farm, flowers from Roses Brook Blooms, and marrow beans from Buttermilk Bean — with international and trend-forward pantry items like Yun Hai Amber River soy sauce, Eden soba noodles, Swedish gingersnaps, conservas (including Minnow cod liver) and Cantabrian anchovies. It also sells homemade goods made by the owner, such as semolina lemon-fennel cake, chicken and pork broths, and fresh tomato sauce with Calabrian chile, plus a private-label sherry vinegar sourced from a friend. Presentation is intimate and playful — a large wooden table with flowers greets customers, handwritten labels and witty signs riff on the owner’s voice, a bowl of Ferrero Rocher is sold for 75 cents apiece, and sticker proceeds benefit the Delaware County Food Bank — creating a warm, parasocial, brand-driven experience. Prices skew accessible (many pantry items under $10, e.g., De Cecco pasta $4, Rancho beans $6) though some specialty items are pricy (Cantabrian anchovies $72), which helps draw both local residents and visitors from nearby cities and colleges. The shop’s opening drew scarce parking and a steady mix of Bard students, Brooklyn transplants, and longtime locals; patrons and neighbors say it feels like a tangible, hopeful boost for a small hamlet that has struggled to retain businesses and residents, and the owner plans to expand offerings (linens and more) as the store evolves." - Callie Hitchcock

First Bloom, a Store by Alison Roman, Is Opening ‘Soon’ | Eater NY

"Opening in the former home of a pizzeria with upstairs guest rooms (Table on Ten) in Bloomville, New York, Alison Roman is launching her first corner store and provisions shop with a team-set launch date in September. Since her controversial exit from the New York Times she’s been focused on her Substack, “A Newsletter,” and her YouTube cooking series “Home Movies,” and Roman fans have already flocked — the shop reportedly has nearly 13,000 followers before opening. The website lists hours as Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m." - Emma Orlow

Love this place— loved all of the curated items for sale and the tinned sardine and anchovy selection was really cool. We also had fresh biscuits and jam. Highly recommend if you’re swinging through the area

Jane greeted us when we came in on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon, it’s an absolutely beautifully done shop. The selection seemed very artisanal and thoughtfully chosen. Local produce, a lot of dry goods, and snacks.

Proximity to this store was a highlight of my month in the Catskills. Such joy every time I walk in, it’s really hard to resist buying one of everything but here’s a plan: go Saturday or Sunday shortly after 10am for Alison Roman’s fresh baked biscuits with jam & butter. While you’re munching, stroll & contemplate your meal plan using her recipes. I’m usually getting fresh greens & herbs & produce, some kind of fancy pasta and tinned fish, crushed tomatoes, the best dozen eggs you can find up here (and that’s a high bar), Old Chatham cheese and maybe brothy beans. I can’t go alone because at that point I need someone to cut me off, but you’ll have meal options for days!

The shop looks cute but why stock a brand of coconut milk that’s been linked to monkey abuse?

I was excited to stop by this place upon our first trip in the Bloomville area and remembered how sweet and helpful Dylan had been. So the second time my boyfriend and I were visiting we had to return for more goodies and warm conversation. Those biscuits with jam and butter, a show stopper. The baguette with ham and mustard was the perfect lunch for our last day in Bloomville. I’ve been a fan of Alison Roman for a while now and love the assortment and intention behind everything offered at First Bloom. If you’ve never been do yourself a favor and stop by! Whether for sardines, biscuits, baguettes or beans! They’ve got it all! Again so much love to Dylan!

I spent 15$ on a single tomato here and the girl at the register told me that “good produce shouldn’t be accessible”

Yelp
Stopped in to get some snacks for a hike on the Catskills Scenic Trail. The trail may have been muggy and full of bugs but the snacks were excellent. They make the sour cherry trail mix in house and it was exceptional. No annoying "filler nuts" - perfect trail mix. I also got some really good sesame spelt crackers that were made in the area at middle brook mill. We also got some real Swedish raspberry swedish fish which were fantastic. Everything was great and wonderfully curated.
