Best Restaurants in Hastings and St Leonards: East Sussex Travel Guide | Eater London

"True to its name — more affectionately known as the FILO — this lively pub, behind East Hill in Hastings, is far enough from the ocean that most tourists don’t seem to bother with it. The restaurant has six house ales —brewed in a green-doored cottage down the street — from pale to dark, among which the ginger-infused Old Town Tom particularly stands out. The Sunday roast is proper, but it’s the not-as-proper Thursday night Indian thali that’s worth skipping work on Friday for. The garam masala is made from scratch, which adds a lot of flair to the vegetable or Nilgiri korma, Kerala fish molee, or Parsee red chicken curry, surrounded by the usual suspects: basmati rice, raita, poppadum." - Nikkitha Bakshani

I just cannot stop thinking about this pub and the roast of a lifetime I had here. Me and my friends fancied a lil jaunt down to the seaside to escape our busy London life and this pub was highly recommended through friends of friends. Walking to the pub, you pass by so many enchanting houses and antiques galore. Once you enter you are met with a delightful ambience. The service was welcoming and kind always making sure we had everything we needed. We ordered four roasts - I had the beef and it was just exceptional. Perfect portion - delicious taste and the vegetables were all perfect! Special shoutout to the cauliflower cheese…and obviously I had to get a desert..so shoutout the sticky toffee pudding - a classic but wowe this one I still dream about. Highly recommend First In Last Out, and hope to visit again with a pale ale and a roast. Also dog-friendly!! Every pooch was on their best behaviour so only good bois’ can be served I suppose. Thank you First In Last Out

Definitely a favourite in Hastings, huge advantage is if you love real ale, these guys make it themselves just up the road. They usually have 4 of their own ales on hand pump. The food is absolutely fantastic too, with a regularly changing menu and also food theme nights. At the time of writing it's Thai on Mondays and Thali on Thursdays. Food service is 12-3pm and 6-9pm and they take card payments. We opted for pan fried sea bass on a bed of crushed potatoes in a lemon caper sauce and a lovely fish pie. This was followed by an excellent sticky toffee pudding. Highly recommend booking for evening dinner as it gets very busy, but that's just because it's so good!

This is one of our favourite pubs in the old town and we love coming here for the great atmosphere, their own brewed beers, and the food. In winter time, a cast iron fire pit place in the middle of the pub provides for a cozy setting and one barely wants to leave. On this visit I had the FILO Fish Pie for mains and a Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert. Both were amazing and very enjoyable. The FILO holds a few themed food nights through out the week and features live music sessions throughout the year.

The staff at this restaurant were incredibly friendly. We arrived around 5 PM and learned that food wasn't available yet, but they warmly welcomed us to wait until 6 PM to order. Since our children were a bit tired and hungry from walking, the staff thoughtfully introduced various snacks and drinks to them, helping them find their favorites. Dinner was excellent—the food quality was outstanding! 👍🏻 Other customers were also very kind and friendly toward the children, creating a truly welcoming atmosphere. This meal was the perfect way to conclude our day's journey.

The staff here were extremely friendly and helpful. We went there two nights in a row and they remembered what we drank the night before. I had a couple of tasty pints of Harvey's and my mates had some other local beers. Overall, FILO is a great example of a traditional English pub.

Beautiful pub with superb staff and interiors. The Indian food served on Thursdays makes my mouth water just to think of it! And they serve Leffe on tap! Paradise...

I liked FILO so much - I picked FILO randomly on the day I was visiting Hastings and had Sunday roast lunch there. The stuff was so friendly, warm and welcoming. I was accommodated well even I didn’t have the booking on a busy Sunday. The food (Sunday roast) was very tasty and OMG, the toffee pudding dessert 🍮! Do me a favor - you have to try it! It was served warm with all the sweet delightness! If you like to feel the local old town vibe, enjoy a lovely meal and hospitality in Hastings. This is a great place to go! 🪵🔥🍺🍷🍮🍽️🍖🤎

Yelp
Went for a Sunday roast here yesterday. They brought our meat and potatoes on a plate each, then a small dish of vegetables which I would have gauged adequate for one person, but we were expected to share it. Very, very small portion sizes, particularly considering the £12.50 per head cost. Just about got two broccoli florets and quarters of a small stick of carrot each. The beef was a little tough too, and only two small slices. There was definitely room for pudding, but looking at their sweet board, with an extra charge of £5.50 each, we decided rather than pay an extra £11 for inadequate portions we would go and buy a ginger cake for £1 at the nearby supermarket and make some custard at home. Overpriced. My advice would be to get in the car and go to the nearest Toby carvery.

Yelp
My favourite pub in Hastings. Quite old fashioned - i.e. no music, cocktails or pool tables. But it has it's own micro brewary with great beers plus an open fire in the winter.

Yelp
My favourite pub of Hastings set in the heart of the old town. Good old fashioned vibe with great food and real ale. I like the fact that you can actually hear what your mates have to say as there's a no music policy here. The seating arrangement is good too adding to the old fashioned feel with some lovely old wooden church like pews that make for an intimate cosy enviroment. Staff are friendly and approachable and the locals are a but above the usual rabble found in the town centre pubs.

Yelp
A real pub with real ale and real food! There's a smart restaurant room for evening meals and simpler food at lunchtime in the bar area. Prices for food are higher than much of the local competition, but are justified by the quality. I am not a real ale expert but have enjoyed several of the different beers that they brew nearby.
