Best Restaurants in Hastings and St Leonards: East Sussex Travel Guide | Eater London

"True to its name — more affectionately known as the FILO — this lively pub, behind East Hill in Hastings, is far enough from the ocean that most tourists don’t seem to bother with it. The restaurant has six house ales —brewed in a green-doored cottage down the street — from pale to dark, among which the ginger-infused Old Town Tom particularly stands out. The Sunday roast is proper, but it’s the not-as-proper Thursday night Indian thali that’s worth skipping work on Friday for. The garam masala is made from scratch, which adds a lot of flair to the vegetable or Nilgiri korma, Kerala fish molee, or Parsee red chicken curry, surrounded by the usual suspects: basmati rice, raita, poppadum." - Nikkitha Bakshani

The staff at this restaurant were incredibly friendly. We arrived around 5 PM and learned that food wasn't available yet, but they warmly welcomed us to wait until 6 PM to order. Since our children were a bit tired and hungry from walking, the staff thoughtfully introduced various snacks and drinks to them, helping them find their favorites. Dinner was excellent—the food quality was outstanding! 👍🏻 Other customers were also very kind and friendly toward the children, creating a truly welcoming atmosphere. This meal was the perfect way to conclude our day's journey.

One of the very best pubs in Hastings. Top notch food, ale options, great atmosphere and service. Sunday roast to die for. If you haven't visited you're missing out!

I liked FILO so much - I picked FILO randomly on the day I was visiting Hastings and had Sunday roast lunch there. The stuff was so friendly, warm and welcoming. I was accommodated well even I didn’t have the booking on a busy Sunday. The food (Sunday roast) was very tasty and OMG, the toffee pudding dessert 🍮! Do me a favor - you have to try it! It was served warm with all the sweet delightness! If you like to feel the local old town vibe, enjoy a lovely meal and hospitality in Hastings. This is a great place to go! 🪵🔥🍺🍷🍮🍽️🍖🤎

Went for a group lunch on a Saturday. Very nice atmosphere, fire was on. Had the salt beef sandwich! Was well put together, reminded me of a brick lane Biegel. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Thank you. 🙏 🙌

A warm welcome from the staff and a very well presented Sunday roast. I will definitely go back to try Aoythip’s Thai cuisine. The journey back was well worth it. Aoythip and Pat cooking skills are the stuff off legions

A stunning little pub found in the historic old town of Hastings. This place welcome you to an old style wooden tavern with a large fire in the centre. Staff are very friendly and there’s a quieter dinning area located at the rear. A good choice of drinks are available and the menu provides popular choices. Prices are pretty reasonable and food was tasty, arrived quickly and full of taste. A great place to visit for couples or small groups. Worth a visit

Well we had a fantastic lunch at this pub today. Food was great, beer was great. The team is very friendly and very welcoming. Doggie friendly too! I can honestly say one of the best lunches we have had in a few years. We both had mains and dessert - Gert Lush!

Very popular traditional pub in Hastings old town, serves very decent food, and beers from its own brewery. I had the turkey Xmas dinner, generous portion, and top quality. Staff attentive and friendly. Can recommend.

Yelp
Went for a Sunday roast here yesterday. They brought our meat and potatoes on a plate each, then a small dish of vegetables which I would have gauged adequate for one person, but we were expected to share it. Very, very small portion sizes, particularly considering the £12.50 per head cost. Just about got two broccoli florets and quarters of a small stick of carrot each. The beef was a little tough too, and only two small slices. There was definitely room for pudding, but looking at their sweet board, with an extra charge of £5.50 each, we decided rather than pay an extra £11 for inadequate portions we would go and buy a ginger cake for £1 at the nearby supermarket and make some custard at home. Overpriced. My advice would be to get in the car and go to the nearest Toby carvery.

Yelp
My favourite pub in Hastings. Quite old fashioned - i.e. no music, cocktails or pool tables. But it has it's own micro brewary with great beers plus an open fire in the winter.

Yelp
My favourite pub of Hastings set in the heart of the old town. Good old fashioned vibe with great food and real ale. I like the fact that you can actually hear what your mates have to say as there's a no music policy here. The seating arrangement is good too adding to the old fashioned feel with some lovely old wooden church like pews that make for an intimate cosy enviroment. Staff are friendly and approachable and the locals are a but above the usual rabble found in the town centre pubs.

Yelp
A real pub with real ale and real food! There's a smart restaurant room for evening meals and simpler food at lunchtime in the bar area. Prices for food are higher than much of the local competition, but are justified by the quality. I am not a real ale expert but have enjoyed several of the different beers that they brew nearby.
