Best Restaurants in Hastings and St Leonards: East Sussex Travel Guide - Eater London

"True to its name — more affectionately known as the FILO — this lively pub, behind East Hill in Hastings, is far enough from the ocean that most tourists don’t seem to bother with it. The restaurant has six house ales —brewed in a green-doored cottage down the street — from pale to dark, among which the ginger-infused Old Town Tom particularly stands out. The Sunday roast is proper, but it’s the not-as-proper Thursday night Indian thali that’s worth skipping work on Friday for. The garam masala is made from scratch, which adds a lot of flair to the vegetable or Nilgiri korma, Kerala fish molee, or Parsee red chicken curry, surrounded by the usual suspects: basmati rice, raita, poppadum." - Nikkitha Bakshani

Fabulous dog friendly pub restaurant in Hastings Old Town with delicious food and amazingly friendly service. FILO is a bit out past the Old Town but is well worth the extra walk. The bar which was cozy with an open wood fire was packed but thankfully the restaurant was nice and quiet. The lady who served us was amazingly attentive and a real credit to the place. Food was fresh and really good quality. I had the calamari followed by the roasted duck. Vegan options were a bit limited tho but overall definitely a place to check out.

Had a gorgeous roast at this lovely, tucked away, pub. Super friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

A pub a bit away from the crowded seafront of Old Town Hastings, its large choice of craft ales - especially those coming from their own brewery - are really worth the little walk up there. Feel free to visit the place, you won't regret it. Thanks

Visited today (Tuesday) for lunch and was surprised to see it was v. busy. Tables had been reserved in the front bar, so we went out the back, with the dog. The food was very good, one had fried cod (they had run out of plaice) and chips served with mint pea sauce (mushy peas?) with salad. Another had pan fried sea bass served with a potato & onion mash with a mustard dill sauce and green beans wrapped in courgette slice i.e. v. well presented (see photos). We had time for coffees served with a biscuit each. Time was limited as we had parked earlier, gone for a walk up East Cliff then returned for a quick lunch. We returned to the car with seconds to spare thanks to Adam and his team.

It's nice place, a bit isolated from the old town, we were nearby quite a lot, but it was our first visit, we have tried several local beer, which were delicious, we will back again for sure

Best Roast dinner ,we have had out 👌🏻🥰 such great flavours, Red cabbage ,(full of orange , caraway seeds with the lovely fennel Aniseed flavour ) Cauliflower cheese ( tastes of a good cheese & &ooh so crispy top ) that’s included in the price presented beautifully ( great attention to detail ). Great wine to complement food. Wonderful desserts . Would 100% recommend

A wonderful pub with a great selection of ales and an atmosphere that money can't buy. Down to earth, lively, unspoilt and full of great characters. Hastings is blessed with many really great pubs and this is up there with the best.

I was there with a friend, we ordered some prawns for a starter and a beef burger for dinner. Everything was delicious and very large portions which the two of us could not eat, even though it was delicious 🙈😋. The waiters were very nice and asked often enough if we needed anything more.👍 I highly recommend it and I will definitely come there with my friends.😁 The great advantage of this pub is the fireplace in the middle of the room.🤩

Yelp
Went for a Sunday roast here yesterday. They brought our meat and potatoes on a plate each, then a small dish of vegetables which I would have gauged adequate for one person, but we were expected to share it. Very, very small portion sizes, particularly considering the £12.50 per head cost. Just about got two broccoli florets and quarters of a small stick of carrot each. The beef was a little tough too, and only two small slices. There was definitely room for pudding, but looking at their sweet board, with an extra charge of £5.50 each, we decided rather than pay an extra £11 for inadequate portions we would go and buy a ginger cake for £1 at the nearby supermarket and make some custard at home. Overpriced. My advice would be to get in the car and go to the nearest Toby carvery.

Yelp
My favourite pub in Hastings. Quite old fashioned - i.e. no music, cocktails or pool tables. But it has it's own micro brewary with great beers plus an open fire in the winter.

Yelp
My favourite pub of Hastings set in the heart of the old town. Good old fashioned vibe with great food and real ale. I like the fact that you can actually hear what your mates have to say as there's a no music policy here. The seating arrangement is good too adding to the old fashioned feel with some lovely old wooden church like pews that make for an intimate cosy enviroment. Staff are friendly and approachable and the locals are a but above the usual rabble found in the town centre pubs.

Yelp
A real pub with real ale and real food! There's a smart restaurant room for evening meals and simpler food at lunchtime in the bar area. Prices for food are higher than much of the local competition, but are justified by the quality. I am not a real ale expert but have enjoyed several of the different beers that they brew nearby.
