Visited First Magnitude Brewing Company on Saturday night. Ordered 6oz pours of Nightfall Coffee Stout, American Barleywine, Peach For America, Devil's Red Eye, and Saltwater Intrusion.
Quality
My experience at First Magnitude Brewing Company was extremely poor, but it had nothing to do with the beer. We ended up trying five beers and each was solid. The board with beers was a little confusing in terms of determining what if any beers were guest taps, but I believe we stuck with all brews from in-house. We tried Nightfall Coffee Stout, American Barleywine, Peach For America, Devil's Red Eye, and Saltwater Intrusion. Saltwater Intrusion was the top for me. An orange cran-razz gose, it was sour yet sweet. A very refreshing beer I could imagine enjoying all summer. The Nightfall Coffee Stout was also excellent. A classic combination, but just done very well. The only beer I was not crazy about was Devil's Red Eye, a double IPA with coffee. I just did not understand it at all. It seemed to be missing the hop flavor I expect of an IPA, but I also did not get coffee flavor. I am almost convinced they gave me the wrong beer as the profile did not seem to fit the description. In the end though I wish I got to try more, but the atmosphere was just miserable and we packed up early.
Quantity
The first round we ordered came in a small glass, which did not seem like a 6oz pour. The next round was served in plastic cups that seemed more accurate in size. Then the last order was a half pour in a full size plastic cup. I did not understand the madness, just took my beer and tried to escape the chaos.
Value
The 6oz pours ranged from $2.50 to $4, which were perfectly fine. Drafts meanwhile fell between $5 and $8.
Ambiance
First Magnitude Brewing Company is a massive space in Gainesville. In a giant warehouse, they occupy an outdoor beer garden, an indoor tasting room, a hollowed out garage, and a second smaller outdoor patio. In the beer garden they had a small bar set up as well as blaring loud live music. The tasting room was small and packed. They had televisions here and many folks had camped out to watch the football game. In the garage area they had a fundraiser and recruiting for the circus. Then the small outdoor patio, where we set up shop, was the quietest space, but still invaded by marauding children. This section was also close to several food trucks and art tents. There was just too much activity and as such, chaos everywhere. I personally couldn't deal with it and despite wanting to try more beers, decided it wasn't worth the energy.
Crowd
The crowd is the major problem with First Magnitude Brewing Company. Despite not being dog friendly, they are kid friendly to a fault. At one point we had a child jump onto and over our table as a massive game of tag ensued. Screaming, yelling, and eventually crying. Minimal supervision and no one working seemed to care. And yet a dog on a leash cannot visit.
Service
The staff was friendly, but uncoordinated. They had no system set up and each time I ordered a 6oz pour I got a different container, first glass, then small plastic, then half pour of large plastic. They also seemed unconcerned or unwilling to deal with the wild horde of children running rampant.
Parking
Parking is a disaster. They have two small lots, which were not nearly enough to support the crowd. Customers were parked every which way and several cars ended up blocked in as a result.
Extra
The issue with First Magnitude Brewing Company is not the beer, the beer is actually pretty good. It is the horrendous atmosphere. I think of breweries as a relaxing place to enjoy a good beer, this was not that. It was closer to a Chuck E. Cheese birthday party. Maybe great for parents, but not for me.
