I really, really wanted to like Fisch & Flore more than I did dining here last night. I first set foot in Cafe Flore in 1984, I was all of 17 and this was when it was only coffee and pastries. I spent all of my 20's and 30's here, almost on the daily and watched it transition from being exclusively a coffee-house cafe, to a full fledged and wildly popular restaurant that served incredible salads, pastas, chicken and burgers, not super high end but very approachable and home-y feeling generously sized meals. You did NOT need reservations then, you could simply stop in for either coffee or a meal or both. You saw all the regulars (at one time Spin magazine referred to it at Cafe Hairdo) It also had great bread and great fries, it was a hit and everyone I knew in the neighborhood went there often. While I'm pleased that Serhat Zorlu went to all the effort of updating the interior and opening a new restaurant in the space so that its no longer and empty sad tombstone in the Castro, the new Fisch & Flore feels too precious. Gone are all the interior elements that made this place funky and approachable and comfortable, in its place, upscale brasseri meets quansat hut, but not in a good way. All the hard surfaces are still there making it deafeningly loud inside, some sound baffling in the ceiling might have helped but it's still a corrugated metal ceiling and glass walls. It just doesn't suit the architecture of the building. Staff were very friendly, but the attempts at 'coursing' dishes that felt more family style were not necessary. The food was fine, maybe even sort-of good, but nothing that will bring me back. The Caesar salad was warm, which was not good, I seek cold crunchy Romain or if you must, little gem, but got slightly wilted little gem in too much dressing and wayyy too many anchovies. The calamari was a bright spot for me, cooked well, not oily, perfect tartar sauce that seemed very fresh with relish and the tang that you want in a good tarter sauce, good portion and tasty. The Humus was good. I would like to have tried the seafood linguine as that looked appetizing. I absolutely could not wrap my head around 'Baked Clams - lime, pistachio, orange, vanilla beans, cardamom, tarragon vinegar ' - Clams with Vanilla essence?? Why? Please Fisch & Flore, take it down several notches, we really don't need a fancy seafood only focused restaurant in that spot. Open up that menu, make it a little more approachable and casual, there are a lot of us still around who would love to start coming back to Flore, but not when the place is too austere, highly priced and precious. You want a regular local crowd? Switch up that menu a bit and bring it back down to earth, you'll definitely be packed, the neighborhood needs it to be an anchor again!
