On the Grid : Café Flore

"Back in the day the neighborhood fondly referred to this garden cafe, bar, restaurant, community space and sometimes nightclub as "Cafe Hairdo". Established in 1973, it was the original place to be seen, under a tin roof, surrounded by vintage Finnish decor or outside within the wraparound patio. The abundance of windows, skylights and plants make it the cafe with a greenhouse feel — a coolhouse with a disco ball and fanciful gigantic double doors." - pixelstud

All Four of Amazon Go Stores in Downtown San Francisco Are Closing - Eater SF

"Cafe Flore, known for its triangular Market Street location and abundant outdoor space, has been closed since 2019. But the San Francisco Chronicle reports former server and new owner Serhat Zorlu plans to take the business in a new direction as seafood restaurant Fisch and Flore in the coming months. Zorlu wants to honor the restaurant’s 50-year history and will continue to serve coffee in a casual atmosphere throughout the day, while shifting the menu to plant-based seafood and vegetarian fare, too." - Paolo Bicchieri

This has rapidly become my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. At a time when other restaurants are decreasing foods quality to save costs, it's a real pleasure to see the care with which the chef prepares the food here, and how willing he is to make adjustments for gluten sensitivity. The service here is also very good - people seem to genuinely enjoy working here, which makes a huge difference.

We were pleasantly surprised to discover this little gem. The menu is seasonal and although we were hoping to try their fish and chips the salmon and the sea bass did not disappoint. They had 3 white wine options and the server patiently gave little taste so that I picked the right one. Worked out well because the 3rd time was the charm and one of my dining companions also ordered the same. The breading on the calamari was really light and you can really taste the calamari. Although I’ve never been, my friend described it as reminiscent of the calamari that they serve in Greece. It was really cold when we came here but it would be great to come back on a sunny day to enjoy the patio or sit outside by the fire sipping a cocktail.

I'm sure some of you guys remember the good old cafe Flore and the various memories it held. It was certainly the place to see and be seen but it was also a cozy place where one could just enjoy a cup of coffee alone. So seeing this place reopening with much of the same layout and roof structure is certainly a joy. The decor fits and gives a nice combo of trendy and stylish without being over bearing. As the new owner held onto the old metal roof structure, the place does get super noisy. Sounds from every table bounces off and u better be ready to raise your voice which adds to the problem. If you decide to eat at this place also make sure you are not close to the door. Cold San Francisco evenings can have a chilling effect on the dinning experience and if you are like me I don't like to eat dinner while wearing a coat nor do I like to freeze while doing so. Now to the food We ordered the smelt, octopus and seafood pasta. The octopus was outstanding, crisp yet tender perfectly cooked and the couscous rounded out the sweet potato puree. The seafood pasta al Dante and shrimp and squid a nice blend to the bisque flavor they used to quickly blanch the pasta and add some extra flavors. The smelt needs work, it was not crispy enough and a bit too much on the fishy side and it didn't bring out that distinct smell texture..... Food quality is good, portion size to price is a bit on the small/high side as three to four dishes per person are recommend and that will run up a bill....

Lovely ambience of a little urban greenhouse. Solid brunch spot that has been featured on KQED. Got the Dungeness crab and cilbir — a Turkish dish of poached eggs and yogurt sauce. Dipping the sourdough bread in these eggs was just *chef's kiss*. The tomato & eggs was also pretty fresh. Great presentation overall and it's a relaxing spot to talk and chill. The drinks menu is quite extensive - not just the brunch mimosas but also cocktails. The espresso martini had a thick foam top. Service took a bit long despite being off peak hours but I guess skillets take a while to warm up!

Vibrant and clean place. Went for brunch and sat on the really nice patio. This place has tons of atmosphere and the service was friendly and professional. Lattes were excellent. The crab croque-madame was delightful and the potato hash was nice but a bit dry and was lacking some acidity. Mostly, both dishes could be elevated with a few pieces of fresh fruit on the side to contrast with their richness. Small details like that would make those dishes 5 stars and support the high price. Overall, this place has a lot of potential and we will be back.

This location is phenomenal! Right on the corner, you have a beautiful view of the Castro district, making you realize how beautiful and unique this location is! The food was incredible, the mix of frying calamari was extraordinary! Very crispy, light and tasty! I also had the opportunity to taste the pasta and it was incredible! It felt as I was back in Italy again! I recommend anyone to come and enjoy this beautiful location, with amazing food and fantastic staff! Will be back soon!

Google
Such a cute neighborhood spot! Great for a spendy date night. The vibe / decor is romantic with a dope outdoor patio section. The food is delicious, but small portions. The service was generally good, but we had to ask for napkins three times and twice for cutlery after they took ours 😅 Cocktails were good We got: - burrata - salmon tartare - oysters (our fav, and I don’t even like oysters) - octopus (this was ok) - calamari

Yelp
We're a couple of Castro locals who had been eagerly awaiting the opening of Fisch and Flor, and I am so happy to report that it does not disappoint. Came with my husband, small human and her best guncle to sit on the patio and had an absolutely delightful Saturday brunch. First off, it was easy to make a reservation on Resy and when I emailed them a question about dietary restrictions, they were super responsive. The renovation is beautiful and i cannot wait to sit by the little fire pit outside in the evening. We basically ordered everything and there were many standouts. Fair warning, almost everything on the menu contains fish or shellfish and some form so if you're not a fan, this might not be the place for you. Table faves were: -raw scallops -clam chowder -melon (was a perfect palate cleanser) -calamari -grilled oysters Should you also have a weird fancy 5 year old, they might enjoy: -raw scallop -melon -all of the avocado from the ceviche -clam chowder -calamari -70% of the salmon from the salmon salad Only negatives were the hot fishes on top of the lettuces in the salad dishes made for some wilted soggy salad and that for the amount of food you need to get full from smaller portions, it's on the pricier side. My next visit will likely be a cocktail and app around happy hour since I'm presently on a budget, but we definitely want to return. Service was warm and attentive even in the restaurant's early days where folks were still getting the hang of it all. Highly recommend this Castro gem.

Yelp
I want to love this place. But I don't think they understand the neighborhood or what people want & more importantly, what they can afford. I don't want to spend a lot of time on this review. So I encourage you to try this new Flor. The first time I went, the hostess was rude & not fun. The oysters Rockefeller were good, they call them baked oysters & she wanted to argue about that. But that is it. Way over-priced cocktails. So I returned. Another $16 cocktail that was okay & I ordered the only lunch item less than $17 mussels & pasta. 40 minutes go by. I had to go back to work. I strongly suggest that the owners meet with the Owners of Kitchen Story. Every time someone buys Port Deli, aka Tangerine aka Kitchen Story & they don't do brunch They Fail.

Yelp
As a longtime front of house professional, with a seasoned pallete and fine-dining attention to detail, I can not recommend this new SF gem more! The staff is so warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable, the timing of every step of service was perfect, the food is delicious, authentic Mediterranean / Californian, but approachable. It shows that whoever crafted this concept really hit all of the marks, stayed true to Cafe Flore, but also elevated exponentially. The menu is well designed, with bespoke cocktails and intentionally sourced esoteric wines to pair with the food, all at a more than agreeable price point. For those looking for upscale-casual dining, this is a very welcomed addition to the Castro!

Yelp
Fisch and Flore in the Castro is a gem! The prime location and beautiful patio create the perfect dining atmosphere. The seafood platter is a must-try - fresh and flavorful, paired perfectly with their crispy fries. Their cocktails are top-notch, adding to the overall great experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking for excellent food and drinks in a vibrant setting!

Yelp
Super friendly service, great location, and loved the atmosphere. I never have luck going to restaurants when they first open, but knowing there would be some issues, I was pleasantly surprised about how on top of it everyone was. My husband and I were first seated at an awkward spot between a pole, they were happy to accommodate our request for a new seat at the bar. The fries and mayo were pretty salty, and overpriced, but they were delicious, so much so that I didn't get a picture. The oysters were nice and fresh. I wish the shells were cleaned a bit more so I wasn't pulling shells out of my mouth, but with so few good spots in the castro offering oysters, I was still a happy camper! The burrata was absolutely delicious, eventhough it may have been canned slices of grapefruit it was as still something I'd get again, without a doubt. The cocktails were also really good. I had the Fisch martini which was really tasty, and made me wish I got a second. I forgot what my husband got, but all the drinks were top notch. The one downer was the lack of knowledge around gluten free options. This is something I can imagine will come with time, but being celiac, I am always over the moon when staff can tell me their recs for gluten free options, or even better, if allergens were listed on the menu. With all that said, I'm so happy this spot opened. With the fire pit, outdoor seating on market, and a lively atmosphere, a few minor menu adjustments or price decreases will have this place being a goto spot in SF.

Yelp
We had my sister's birthday dinner celebration at this aesthetically beautiful restaurant during their opening weekend today. This restaurant went above and beyond in all aspects. First, the food was amazing!! Some of our favorites were: the shrimp kiremet, zucchini blossoms, the octopus with carrot mousseline, and the burrata with seasonal citrus. Our server, Frederick was so welcoming, hospitable and so efficient. As busy as the restaurant was, we felt so welcomed by Chef Tim, Chef Efe and the entire warm staff. This place is already so busy and will definitely be booked in the coming days and months ahead, so book your reservations quickly for a magical dining experience!

Yelp
What a great spot with great food, awesome cocktails and incredible service. Had been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to try the new restaurant taking over the Cafe Flore space. I was not disappointed. The ambience was amazing, We had the ceviche , tuna tartare and the corvina. All great sized portions and very intelligently priced. We also had 2 cocktails, sorry forgot the names but they were awesome. They make their syrups in-house for a unique flavor. Highly recommended and definitely going back.

Yelp
Welcome to comedy brunch hour, where the joke is on you! I hope you're on a diet, because you're not getting full here! We only serve pas-amuse-bouche. I mean seriously, one perfect egg for $18? Skip the caviar and make it 3, or bigger, or with awesome hollandaise made to order, or something! A barely dressed and slightly warmed "baked" oyster for $5, ok, thank god it's fresh but have you heard of oysters Rockefeller? Look it up, it's in The Joy of Cooking. Three precious, over-salted crab cakes in tahini, oooh we can't possibly finish it! We're STUFFED. I miss the old flore, which had small portions but at least wasn't completely insulting. Gay people are too smart to come here. The End.

Yelp
I really, really wanted to like Fisch & Flore more than I did dining here last night. I first set foot in Cafe Flore in 1984, I was all of 17 and this was when it was only coffee and pastries. I spent all of my 20's and 30's here, almost on the daily and watched it transition from being exclusively a coffee-house cafe, to a full fledged and wildly popular restaurant that served incredible salads, pastas, chicken and burgers, not super high end but very approachable and home-y feeling generously sized meals. You did NOT need reservations then, you could simply stop in for either coffee or a meal or both. You saw all the regulars (at one time Spin magazine referred to it at Cafe Hairdo) It also had great bread and great fries, it was a hit and everyone I knew in the neighborhood went there often. While I'm pleased that Serhat Zorlu went to all the effort of updating the interior and opening a new restaurant in the space so that its no longer and empty sad tombstone in the Castro, the new Fisch & Flore feels too precious. Gone are all the interior elements that made this place funky and approachable and comfortable, in its place, upscale brasseri meets quansat hut, but not in a good way. All the hard surfaces are still there making it deafeningly loud inside, some sound baffling in the ceiling might have helped but it's still a corrugated metal ceiling and glass walls. It just doesn't suit the architecture of the building. Staff were very friendly, but the attempts at 'coursing' dishes that felt more family style were not necessary. The food was fine, maybe even sort-of good, but nothing that will bring me back. The Caesar salad was warm, which was not good, I seek cold crunchy Romain or if you must, little gem, but got slightly wilted little gem in too much dressing and wayyy too many anchovies. The calamari was a bright spot for me, cooked well, not oily, perfect tartar sauce that seemed very fresh with relish and the tang that you want in a good tarter sauce, good portion and tasty. The Humus was good. I would like to have tried the seafood linguine as that looked appetizing. I absolutely could not wrap my head around 'Baked Clams - lime, pistachio, orange, vanilla beans, cardamom, tarragon vinegar ' - Clams with Vanilla essence?? Why? Please Fisch & Flore, take it down several notches, we really don't need a fancy seafood only focused restaurant in that spot. Open up that menu, make it a little more approachable and casual, there are a lot of us still around who would love to start coming back to Flore, but not when the place is too austere, highly priced and precious. You want a regular local crowd? Switch up that menu a bit and bring it back down to earth, you'll definitely be packed, the neighborhood needs it to be an anchor again!

Yelp
So utterly disappointing. We were so excited to try this place as it has been vacant for years. We went yesterday for brunch and the first red flag was it was more than half empty. We ordered a few items and waited and waited and waited for the food . The server was nice but it was absurdly slow given how few people were even eating there. We were still optimistic but the food was very underwhelming . Think generic food fare you could pretty get anywhere. For a seafood place nothing was local or wild . I really don't see this place lasting more than 6 months. The space looks like it would be better utilized as a coffee or wine space as well .

Yelp
Fisch & Flore caters perfectly to pescatarians and seafood lovers -- enjoyed the Fried Smelt, Shrimp, Octopus, and Zucchini Blossoms. The waiters were friendly and helpful, and even offered us a celebratory splash for the restaurant's second opening weekend. The outside patio offers a fire pit and a nice view of Castro's bustling vibe, though it did get chilly once the sun goes down. Looking forward to returning on a warmer day for some high quality cocktails and seafood favorites!

Yelp
Kevin A. left a review a few days ago in which he articulated well how you really want to keep this place a secret once you find it; that's the way I felt when dining yesterday. It was more than I expected it to be - so much more. The decor is lovely, crisp white floor tiling, smart solid walnut tables and great art. Drinks first. We asked for a Manhattan each, and we received. They were perfect! The food is glorious. To address one quick thing, another reviewer commented negatively on the prices, I'd say they are exactly where they should be for the quality. You get what you pay for in life (generally speaking) and Fische and Flore delivers. The octopus, oh boy-oh-boy, the octopus was sublime. No tough and rubbery cephalopod, it was a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth dish. I've eaten a lot of Octopus in restaurants, but this is by far the best I've tasted in America. The bread crumbed Grilled Oysters were truly divine. Already added the to my favorites list. We will be back, regularly! Well done Fische and Flore and welcome (back?) to the neighborhood.

Erika O.

Yelp
This place is a whole lot of YES. Excellent service, ambiance, food, wine list, and prices are decent. Z was my waiter and a total sweetheart - on top of it and super lovely. I think they are open for brunch now on weekends. What's not to love?

Yelp
Great to see this location back. Amazing cocktails, and fantastic food. Special mention did the hummus and fries.

Yelp
Sometimes you really hate to review a restaurant! You really want to keep this one a secret! BUT... you want them to be wildly successful!! Don't think it will really matter what I say because when you go there you will notice the reason they will be successful for a very long time.. so far two meals 9 dishes and not one was less then perfect. What is perfect? Perfect is when the chef or the mixologist.combine the right things together and give you better than what you thought you might get! So since you are still reading this you must want to know.. so far my favorite is the octopus followed up by the ceviche... okay you will have to let your tastebuds say the rest!! If your tastebuds tell you anything but perfection.. get new tastebuds!! Oh the drinks ... the one I like so far because it was so good don't really want to move on yet!! Ask for the wife's special!! She must be amazing!! I stopped giving reviews and when I do I no longer give 5 stars... well I have to break that rule. 5 stars! If you don't agree once again.. tastebuds have to be off!! Ambiance shooed have been selected as well.. not sure what's up .. yelp!!

Mia S.

Yelp
Gorgeous re-invention of the old Cafe Flore. Lovely renovation inside and out. Outstanding inventive cocktails. The mussels soaked up with fresh bao- succulent, sweet and inspired! The lacy squid paired with that amazing coconutty tartar sauce! And the incredible octopus, smoky, deep and soooo tender- far and away the best I've had anywhere! Viva The Fisch & Flore!!!

Carlos O.

Yelp
Decided to try this new place out since I work close to it. The food is pretty pricy and the portions are small. The flavor wasn't bad but I left feeling hungry. Service was good, the waitress was very friendly. It has a nice vibe to it but I don't think it's worth the price. I ended up going to get more food after somewhere else.

Yelp
So glad this favorite spot is open again - with upgrades! Enjoyed friendly service from Zamir and Dato!

Johnny D.

Yelp
Great food, drinks, and ambiance. There's no other place like this in the Castro! Highly recommend the octopus, tuna, calamari, and french fries

Morgan M.

Yelp
First off, the food is good. We had the ceviche, stuffed oysters, shrimp, octopus, corvina, and a side of fries. All of it was well done. Be warned, however, that the portions tend to be quite small. Additionally, they charge $8 for a soda.

Thom H.

Yelp
Portions tiny, prices HUGE, selection very limited. Good luck, but I'm not the only one who missed the old cafe Flore.

Michael S.

Yelp
Was really excited to see a new place open in the Castro with a great wine list and excellent food. Have gone several times now and highly recommend it. The staff goes above and beyond and solicits input from customers to make it the best experience for everyone. Best place in the Castro right now for sure. The atmosphere is fantastic and the all glass structure gives you a great indoor/outdoor experience. Can't wait till they open for lunch as well coming week to sit outside. Cafe Floor was a fun place and one of my favorites for years, the new owner took it up a notch and created a new more upscale restaurant while honoring the original layout,

Cathy L.

Yelp
I hesitate to write this glowing review because I would prefer that they remain a hidden neighborhood gem, but it was truly wonderful! Everything we ordered was delicious, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. We were expecting some hiccups as they just opened, but it was running smoothly. All the staff we interacted with were excellent and professional. Enjoy it on occasion so they don't get overly busy.

R. Howard S.

Yelp
Great location, service was welcoming and attentive, and ambiance was wonderful. I'm so glad flore has finally come back to life. That being said, the food was kind of a joke. At first the prices seemed high, though not unexpected. But for what we ultimately got they were ridiculous. Everyone at our table was quite surprised at how incredibly small the portions were. When we saw that the $19 shrimp plate came with just five pieces of shrimp and a piece of bread to soak up the relatively uninteresting oil they were served in, there was a feeling of sadness and our stomachs continued to rumble. The flavor was good but unspectacular and did not linger. The hummus appetizer was more like a hummus shooter, not at all appropriate for sharing. We asked about the size of the fries order and were pointed in the direction of a relatively large bowl on a nearby table. When our bowl arrived, it was half occupied by the dipping sauce container so the bowl was not actually representative of the serving size - another disappointment. The zucchini blossoms were good, but also seemed to be lacking flavor and the serving was scant for $21. Along with other plates, we thought we ordered enough for dinner but all of us left hungry and ended up getting more food elsewhere. I really hope the portions can be beefed up and flavors get some extra spice because this space is wonderful and our neighborhood needs it to survive.
