"At this long-established restaurant, Alain Koenig serves up dishes that are pleasingly down-to-earth and packed with flavour. Fish takes centre stage, but there are also a few meat and vegetarian options. You can dine à la carte or opt for one of two set menus: "Complet" (four courses) and "Degustation" (three to six courses). The tasteful decor is classically elegant in style, the service attentive and friendly. Decent wine list. Tip: For private dining or celebrations, book the historical vaulted cellar." - Michelin Inspector

The food was very tasty and the waiter was very friendly and explained to us the brewing process (which happens behind the restaurant). This meant we had really nice beer and were even given a tasting of the beers they brew locally. The only thing I can complain about is the price, but the costs are very transparent even on the menu at the door.

Started with the Buffalo mozzarella. Definitely a winner! For meals, we had a pretzel burger and the prime rib. Both were outstanding! Wait staff were all friendly and attentive. Added bonus of a marching band playing down the street and then showing up in front of this place. Away from the "touristy" areas. Highly recommend!

Hidden gem on a side street just off the Rhine. Old Swiss tavern style without being too overdone. Modern bar with plenty of schnapps, good wine, and tasty draft beer. Had several of their beers, including a seasonal stout that was surprisingly really good. Food was phenomenal, especially the seasonal asparagus cream soup. Stellar experience.

Google
Scrummy food in a Swiss Beiz- helpful friendly and convivial service - cosy atmosphere and quite the place to eat delicious food after a hike or a long day. The local Swiss delicacy of pork cheeks is one to certainly try -

A rather mediocre and underwhelming experience with decent but bland food. The restaurant staff was very friendly, but seemed rather overwhelmed and not in control of the situation, sometimes not even responding to us asking for a refill. They forgot about our table reservation and offered it up to a spontaneous walk-in group, while leaving us with the choice of splitting up or squeezing in tight. The food was decent, but way to overpriced for what it was and felt rather bland (Might be my personal preference though, cause I enjoy good seasoning). Meat wasn’t medium and instead done and on some parts randomly rare, while the herb butter was a frozen chunk. Portions were adequate, but some of the plates we received were dirty. All in all not a bad experience but I will not go again and definitely not recommend it to any of my friends.

Google
35 Franks for this. What kind of standard of food is this for the price. It doesn't even come with a side. A bowl of melted butter. This is one of the poorest standards of a dish we have experienced in Switzerland and when we complained NOTHING was done. Recommendation for this Bar. Come for a drink and don’t order the food. Very expensive and I think the picture says the rest..The Beer is good you should stick to that.

Super nice place! We had dinner here and i ordered the vegetarian tartar. Within minutes they asked how it was. I said it was not how i expected it to be. They offered a new dish immediately. Great service, fast and kind. We will come back for sure.

Google
A week in Basel and this was my best dining experience. Friendly staff, lovely outdoor dining, great beer, beautifully plated meals, extremely delicious sauces and homemade spatzle offerings. A must do restaurant!

Yelp
Great customer service, food and atmosphere. No reservation needed if you go early. Kind and caring owner and employees.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service, and refreshing beer - a worthwhile stop for anyone looking for a hearty dinner in Basel. My husband and I split the pork cheeks w/ spatzel and really enjoyed it. The cheeks were in a dark beer sauce which was rich without being overwhelmingly heavy, and the spatzel was the right amount of salty to go with it. We also really enjoyed the beers at Fischerstube - my husband got the sampler/flight with 4 of their most popular beers (and of course enjoyed them all) and I went with a classic lager style beer. The prices here are also really fair because the portion sizes are huge! We saw several people who had ordered schnitzel and boy oh boy you better come with a big appetite if you plan to finish that dish off!

Yelp
We just got into Basil from Zurich ... from a fast Boeing 788 ... from America, and wanted a nice authentic meal with a little down time, before we started our trip on the Rhine. We got seated in the back garden and the super attentive handsome waiter took our bier and salad orders. I got the Buffalo Mozzarella and Tomato salad - gosh it was so fresh and delish. Our Kellner delivered the refreshing bier as well, so we were off to the races enjoying the people and the atmosphere. While enjoying the pre-meal, a group of fellas (~12 men) from work stopped by and took one of the tables in the lower garden. It seems they just got off work and were having an evening gathering together. They looked smart, just like tech developers in teams that I used to work with. They were having a blast and enjoying their biers and company, and it brought back such good memories of my gang. We then ordered the meal. We decided to split the Brazed Pork Cheeks with Spätzle dish, the one we observed on Yelp. The meal showed up somewhat timely, with extra plates all prepared for us to split. The cooks and waiters were so thoughtful. And so we began the main course, ready to satisfy our hunger after much international traveling. We took a bite, paused, and looked at each other, with only endearing sounds of "yum" emanating from our beings. We looked again and then I said - babe, we scored! Pam said, "who knew pork cheeks could be so tasty!" I agreed. We were happy. Well, the whole dinner was such a treat. I want to thank the wait staff and cooks for a great meal and charming time. We'll be coming back hopefully sometime soon all the way from Colorado, USA.

Yelp
Loved the schnitzel! Fun atmosphere on a lovely warm weekend. Was quickly seated and served in a snap.

Yelp
We had the best dining experience here - food was out standing! Beer is brewed on site and it was very tasty as well! We were lucky to get a table so make sure you make reservations! We plan to go back.

Yelp
I ate here upon recommendation from some work colleagues. The restaurant is full of decor of a joker/jester theme that is tied to a Basel area tradition. I ate the pork knuckle with a pretzel and fries. The food was OK and there is a good beer selection here. The place was busy but we had friendly service. 3.5 stars!

Yelp
Good restaurant with good service. Best thing is that they open on Sunday afternoons. If you love beers with good food, then this is it. Ordered the veal chef special that comes with mushrooms, beets and sweet potatoes. Everything is cooked perfectly. House meatball is quite good as well, very savory and taste. Love the fact that they serve it on a butcher knife Plate. Overall a very good and solid restaurant, their food is a bit pricey but I would recommend it!

Yelp
Highly recommended!! Amazingly wonderful Swiss food in a laid back, neighborhood-feel setting. Located on a non-fancy pedestrian street, in a quiet non-touristy neighborhood. Very friendly and efficient service, English speaking (half the customers seemed to be Americans) and English menu available. The only negative: It took bizarrely long to get our check so we could leave-- but gladly not in a hurry.

Yelp
We called later to learn they are only open for dinner so we made a reservation for the evening and were not disappointed. We were seated in a beautiful garden and enjoyed the best Vienna schnitzel and salad with shrimp. Definitely worth a visit and maybe in future they will open for lunch too!

Greg Z.

Yelp
Service was very slow (-1 star) but that pork knuckle was crazy delicious! The sides were ok but adding some roasted apples or a cranberry sauce would have put it over the top.

Yelp
Came early before kitchen opened at 6-had drinks while waiting. Beer is excellent and fairly cheap. Service was good--lots of locals here as noted. A beautiful night in Basel. The food was excellent. Apps: toasted pretzel with ham and cheese and meatballs very good but the Wiener schnitzel and pork knuckle outstanding. Prices not bad for Switzerland.

Yelp
This is my go to. Favorite dishes are the pork knuckles and the pork cheeks. Both are packed with flavor. I've had both probably 10 times each! This place is also a brewery so your always getting fresh beer. They have a terrace in the back when the weather is right. And the staff is great. Altogether, I can't recommend this place enough! Enjoy.

Yelp
Pretty cool restaurant/bar. They brew their own beer and you can drink in a great variety. If you go as a group i'd suggest the "fässli" (picture in the review). the food is very good too! if you want to show something typical-basel to a tourist or if you like beer; this is the place you go!

Yelp
Fantastic Biergarten in the back (wander through the restaurant, go out the back door and upstairs) with nothing but locals. My boyfriend and I went here for a late-ish dinner on a Saturday night and it was perfect. Amazing Wienerschnitzel and awesome traditional Swiss/German appetizer (The Jubilee Plate) of various sausages, Gruyere, brown bread, small salad of greens and onions and a warm pretzel. Their salads are also great--dressed with a mustard vinaigrette over really fresh bib lettuce. The beer here is amazing--really. They have Ueli Weizen, Lager and Reverenz on tap and it's some of the best I've had in the area. Great food, great atmosphere--only complaint--our waitress was really pokey--but it made it enjoyable because we were in no hurry. Total cost for an appetizer (big enough for a few people to share), a salad (I couldn't finish it), Wienerschnitzel with fries, and 4 beers was just around 100 CHF--which in Switzerland is really not bad at all.

Yelp
This review is only for the drinks. Stopped in for a beer while walking around Basel. It's very nicely decorated and the staff were very attentive. They are also a brewery and you can view the beer making in the back of the restaurant. Stop in sometime!

Yelp
Don't pass this up for dinner- it's not inexpensive but the food is exceptional and authentic. The upper terrace gets very dark at sunset so don't eat up there because you can't see your food. Staff is friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Brauerei Fischerstube. When all other restaurants and bars were closing down for the day, Brauerei Fischerstube saved the day and let a few weary American travelers inside for a last minute meal and a brewski. After drinking and eating a fair amount all day, I figured I'd lighten things up and get a pumpkin soup and a "salad". I couldn't say no, however, to one of the tasty beers they make in house. I opted for the hefeweizen and my travel buddy got the weiss beer. As for the menu, they had typical local delights like sausage, spatzle, schnitzel and so on. For something different, I chose the Brewmaster Salad, which turned out to be the most unhealthy (yet delicious) salad I would ever eat. Picture a sparse bed of butter bib lettuce piled high with the greasiest collaboration of stir-fried meats and a few mushrooms - mostly smoked sausage and hunks of bacon. No dressing necessary. I ate as much as I could, but it was not for the casual meat lover. The pumpkin soup was creamy and delicious. I used about a whole loaf of bread to sop up all the pumpkin oil and bits of pumpkin seed. The beer cut through all the flavors and washed it all down. Sadly it was late so we could not continue to drink and check out the beer garden in the back of the restaurant, nor did we get to try their homemade schnapps. If I ever find myself in Basel again (fingers crossed), I would definitely head back to Brauerei Fischerstube for a frosty Swiss beverage and some local fare.

Yelp
A cozy bistro with very good food. And lots of kinds of brewing beer for diifferent choice.

Yelp
I had the Wienerschnitzel with a glass of their dark beer and their weizen beer. The beer and the schnitzel were very tasty. The decor is very plane, but what they care about is the food and beer. If it is crowded, then you may have to share a table. This is what happened when I was there for dinner.

Gina A.

Yelp
Nice little place for snacking and dinner. (Limited snacks until the kitchen opens at 6:00.) Nice wine list (multiple countries) very reasonably priced for the quality. Friendly service, no matter which language you speak. English menus if needed.

Yelp
One of those serendipitous moments where tooling around a foreign city and hunger converge at the right place at the right time. Walking Basel we came across this very local, cozy restaurant, what a find! Props for the English menu, much appreciated. The smoked sausage, sauerkraut and spätzle just like Momma used to make, yummy Weinerschnitzel, crafted beers on site were so good!, Friendly service and lots of fun with my fractured German and server's fractured English. We felt very welcome, ate well and left with warm and fuzzies for the place

Karen H.

Yelp
The food here was so good. I had the sausage salad it was a perfect mix of meat a cheese some pickled vegetables. Service was fast and friendly I would go there again.

Rusty S.

Yelp
As a non-German-speaking foreigner dining alone, the friendly service made me feel right at home. Beer was fresh and clean and the food was excellent. Crowd was mostly locals, which gave it an authentic vibe.

Dany C.

Yelp
Arriving without a reservation, we got seats at a communal table with an amicable vibe. We had beer and two different kinds of sausages, and everything was simply excellent, including the friendly service.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Good food, very traditional. Good beer along with friendly service. Ate the bar, had the pork with spatzle instead of mash. Very good. All In all I'd come back!

Darrin F.

Yelp
This is the best Swiss restaurant I've found. I found here the wonderful Swiss foods I've heard about but could never find that tasted as good as they were said to be. I'm butchering the spellings, but the dishes I LOVED were rosti, spatzle and apple strudel.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great spot. Micro brewery with good beers and a nice simple clean decor. Outdoor seating too. Mixed crowd. Don't miss out, if you're visiting town or actually live here, it's worth a visit - not a pub as such, but typically you'll find groups of friends socialising.

D C.

Yelp
This is not fine dining, but for what it is (basic Swiss food at a reasonable price) I think it merits a 5. I got 2 entrees (beef liver "sour", and pork cheeks) and both were excellent. The apple strudel was very good. Service was very good. Lots of locals (a good sign, since I'm a tourist). I would return.

Yelp
The food and beer are excellent. The outdoor seating is pleasant. Unfortunately, the service is abysmal. I have visited the Fischer Stube three times and have yet to receive anything resembling fast or friendly service. It's a shame, really.

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
The blonde pilsner + wienerschnitzel + spatzle was amazing. It will likely be crowded when you go, and yes, you have to share a table but that's what they do. Expect it. It's a mix of Pharma businessmen and everyone else who lives in Basel. I can't imagine any of the food is bad and the service is very fast, even for American standards.

Adrian F.

Yelp
Fantastic brewery in an old neighborhood of Basel. The beer is great and the food is good as well. It can get quite load with locals and the service is sometimes a bit saucy. Prices are moderate for Switzerland...

Ron P.

Yelp
busy, authentic, loud, charming and delicious. go.
