The Evolving Allure of Puerto Escondido on Oaxaca’s Coast

"Out of the water, I grabbed an early dinner at the Fish Shack La Punta, a hopping little joint set in a narrow alley near the beach, shaded by swooping palms. The smoked fish dip with avocado, griddled fish sandwich slathered in serrano chile tartare sauce, and spicy margarita were my first introduction to the area's evolving culinary scene, which has brought foodie panache to humble surf grub."

Solid tacos. We went twice during our stay. We ordered a few different taco options, some tostadas and the fries. Tacos pastor was good but not exceptional. Staff were all friendly and the food came quickly. We waited roughly 20 mins for a table both times, but we'll worth the wait.

Solid place and worth the wait. We went twice during our stay. The fried calamari with honey Sriracha sauce was my favorite. We also had ceviche tropical, fish tacos, guacamole, coconut shrimp basket, and fish al pastor tacos. All were really good. The drinks take forever and the name system instead of table numbers is a little chaotic. But, definitely somewhere you should go!

This spot came highly recommended with lots of good reviews, so we were excited to try it. The vibe is great—laid-back, hippie-style shack with house music and a really cool atmosphere. The food presentation is beautiful: colorful, fresh, and eye-catching. That said, the ceviche, while pretty, lacked the spice and brightness you’d expect from a traditional one. The tacos were fine, but not the most memorable in Puerto. Overall, a fun spot with good energy and presentation, though the flavors could use a bit more punch to live up to the vibe.

Probably the best fish taco/calamari of the trip, definitely worth the queue. We had the coconut shrimp taco which was amazing. The cocktails were also delicious. Not the cheapest tacos but not unusual for the area and they were worth it.

I’m always a bit wary of the popular tourist joints, but Fish Shack deserves its reputation! Amazing fish and shrimp tacos, especially the coco fried ones which were so good I returned the next day for more! I’ve heard some describe the coco fried as being a bit sweet, but I loved it regardless. Also, while the 80 peso price per taco may sound high if you’re considering three, they’re much larger than most places, so two will be similar to three traditional tacos in quantity. Great service too, and if you want to avoid the evening crowds, just go at lunch time!

We were in Puerto Escondido 4 days and came to Fish Shack 6 times during our stay. We tried everything from the tacos, to mezcal, to burgers and everything was absolutely delicious. 3 tacos for 150$ is super reasonable and the vibes were just chill. Honestly fish shack would be one reason why I would come back to Puerto.

Incredible fish tacos, right by the beach and great value! I didn’t love the friend fish taco but loved the fish one so much and they had veggie options. One of the best from our trip!

Tucked down a beachside street, this humble fish shack was quite possibly the best food I ate in all of Mexico. The coconut fried shrimp is out of this world, likewise for the pork fried fish. Highly recommend, actually ended up going back twice it was that good.
