Popular Chinese Sauerkraut Fish Chain Fish With You Just Opened in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"A Beijing-based, fast-casual chain with over 2,000 locations has opened in San Diego's Convoy District; the new outpost joins existing U.S. locations in Rowland Heights and Flushing, New York, and replaces Shentan BBQ after being in development since the summer of 2024. The restaurant specializes in suan cai yu, a sauerkraut and white fish stew cooked with Sichuan peppercorns, resulting in a sour-and-spicy flavor; its signature dish is hot-boiled fish with pickled cabbage and chiles, which, once served, resembles a hot pot. The stew is available with two options of whitefish — basa fish and snakehead — and other soup options include a classic spicy fish and a vinegar-pepper version. For non-fish stews, try the tomato beef or crispy pork and hot oil. Add-ins are available for each stew, including tofu, wide sweet potato vermicelli noodles, baby cabbage, and lettuce. The rest of the menu features Taiwanese sausage, chicken skewers, and a sweet brown sugar glutinous rice cake for dessert; make sure to try the complimentary Wuchang rice, which is imported from China. Expansion into San Diego is led by Vicky Hua, who also opened YinTang Spicy Hot Pot and Zhengxin Chicken Steak; Hua said, "I wanted to open this type of Chinese fish restaurant in San Diego because the area doesn’t have something of this kind," (told Eater San Diego in 2014), and she is already thinking about a second Southern California location." - Rebecca Roland

Google
I ordered a single portion of pickled fish with mustard greens and a single portion of spicy blood tofu stew in chili oil—perfect for two people. The dishes arrived quickly, were full of flavor, and went really well with rice. I also got a grilled squid, though unfortunately the size was quite small and I wish it were bigger. The restaurant's decor is crisp and clean, and the staff were warm and attentive. Overall, it offered good value for the price!

I had a lovely dinner at this restaurant! The food was quite good — flavorful and well-prepared. The finish on the dish was especially impressive; the meat was tender and cooked just right. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was attentive without being intrusive.

Google
We ordered the crispy pork, brown sugar rice cakes, and scallion and pickled mustard soup with basa fish with lettuce stem and napa cabbage as the side topping. Food was very fresh, establishment is clean, and service was great and quick. We ordered the small size soup and it was enough for two people. The broth was very flavorful and fish soft and delicious. Will definitely be coming back! Plenty of parking at 3 pm on a Saturday, rare for this area.

Google
A new location by a very large chain restaurant selling fish and beef soups at reasonable prices. Once you are seated, they bring you room-temperature water without a paper menu. You use the QR code to order from the fairly limited choices. Most are between $15 to $20 a person, with free steamed rice. The green Sichuan pepper and cuancai (sour preserved veggie) saba fish soup was not hot but plenty numbing. The fish was tender and good. The tomato saba fish soup was a little too sweet but again the fish was good. The tomato beef soup was slightly more sour and came with thinly sliced fatty beef similar to Chinese hotpot’s. The portions were good, definitely enough for an adult, but the bowels looked humongous because they had a very tall bottom that take away much of the volume. I would have given them 4 stars instead of 3, given the overall experience. However, I really feel that it’s unfair to use a free soda to buy people’s 5 star ratings.

We had the classic sour fish and fried pork. The soup was quite sour. The fish was tender but the fried pork tasted pretty pre-cooked. Not that fresh. Overall, it is worth trying.

Google
This is my 3rd time having Fish With You and it still doesn’t disappoint. I got the Signature Hot-oil pot with crispy pork for appetizer and it’s still consistent as always. The meat was tender and the soup was tasteful. Would definitely recommend.

Google
These broths go hard—super warm to the T and packed with interesting flavors you don’t find just anywhere. • Laotian Suan Cai: Absolute banger. Tangy, savory, and addictive. Suan cai brings deep fermented flavor, and the dried chilis add aroma without wrecking you. • Szechuan Spicy Hot Pot: Numbing, spicy, and loaded with texture—tripe, tofu skin, wood ear. Bold but balanced. • Golden Soup Beef: Smooth, savory, and a little tangy. Cozy, with tender beef and cabbage soaking it all up. Service was a little slow but nothing wild. 100% worth it for the flavors alone.

Google
If you write a 5 stars review for them, you will get a free drink. The truth is their food were pre-prepared which is nothing but unhealthy and full of chemicals.

Yelp
Very yummy! Tomato broth is good for nonspicy options. We also had the signature fish and it was very tender. Would def recommend for people who enjoy fish!

Yelp
Met up with a girlfriend for a midweek lunch, and there was no wait and plenty of open seating. The restaurant decor reflected the modernity and efficiency of the service - we ordered via QR code and each dish was brought to us as it was ready. The Regular portion of the #1 bestseller Laotan Suancai Soup - we upgraded the standard Basa fish to Snakehead - was enough for both of us to share, especially since the kind staff preemptively gave us 2 bowls of rice on the side rather than just the 1 that's officially included with the Regular option. We chose tofu and mushrooms as our mix-ins, and had nothing but praise for this signature Sichuan dish. The Yummy Crispy Pork was exactly as the title would indicate, and the Brown Sugar Glutinous Rice Cake served as a not-overly-sweet dessert option. Bang-on flavors plus bang for your buck!

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place after a friend hyped it up and the Yelp reviews looked good. But wow... what a letdown! I ordered the Signature Suancai & Fish (Large Side) and the mild crispy pork. The pork was okay, probably the only halfway decent part of the meal, and even that wasn't worth writing home about. But the Signature Suancai & Fish? HELLA SALTY. It was so aggressively over-salted I could barely eat it. The potato glass noodles in it were also undercooked; still stiff and chewy, I spat it out. The food came out in literally less than 5 minutes. That's not fast service, that's bare minimum effort. I wanted to try the glutinous rice balls, but at that point I figured the "bad chef" must've been working that day and didn't want to risk another disappointment. Don't think I'll be coming back.

Yelp
The soups are on point, not overly amazing but comforting. Unlimited rice and fells like a cafeteria chow hall. how can you leave hungry with unlimited rice? I honestly like the vibes to be honest. It seems a lot more lax of an atmosphere and no complaints about the food. tons of diff soup options here for the soup lover which I am. I'm gonna put this place in rotation. 1/6 places that in eat at in san diego. if you're picky or a food snob, this might not be for you. This is for the commonfolk who just want a good filling meal at an honest price point.

Yelp
I actually ordered delivery from them and was not disappointed. We got the crispy pork and I had the spicy beef which was so delicious! Perfect in spice for me, I added a side of noodles and some quail eggs and it was definitely a big portion. My roommate had the Triple delight which had a really nice flavor and not too spicy but a little bit more spicy than the spicy beef. I can't wait to dine inside and try other things, everything was so flavorful! Will do an update once I dine in

Yelp
Fish loaded with flavor! This is the most flavorful fish dish I've ever had and it was the perfect combo of spicy and tangy. They have a lot of different types of flavors to pick from with various spice levels and you get to pick from a few options what veggies/toppings to get with the fish. Rice is included with the fish dishes. We also got the crispy pork on the side which was well fried and helped take the edge off of the spice. It was really busy when we went, all the tables were full but we didn't have to wait long for one. Very efficient service here. Once we sat down our order was taken very fast and our food came out very fast. I saw a lot of people coming in to pickup orders as well. The inside almost feels like a food court but bro necessarily in a bad way. Casual spot with delicious food, the price was also good considering this was enough to feed 2 people. I saw a lot of tables of 2-4 people sharing the larger portion size!

Yelp
We ordered the crispy pork, signature fish, and green peppercorn Szechuan fish dishes. The bowls are large but fairly shallow, so the portions aren't quite as big as they appear. The group's favorite was the green peppercorn fish--flavorful and well-balanced. The signature fish was decent as well, just a bit more mild in comparison. Service was friendly and efficient.

Yelp
Arrived when they just opened and there was already a steady amount of people coming in for lunch time! Ordered the Green Sichuan Pepper Suancai & Basa Fish Large. You are able to add 4 extra sides to it. We got the wood ear mushroom, tofu, bean curd and Napa cabbage. For the large portion it comes with 2 bowls of free rice. The flavor was delicious and the peppercorns provided that numbing flavor. I would definitely come back to try the other flavors!

Yelp
Deliciously tender sauerkraut fish! We ordered the original which came in a huge bowl (portions very generous) as well as the laotan bowl which had a little more of a sour taste. Loved both of them. Very easy to order via an app and food came out quickly. Felt healthy eating fish and veggies in a soup and not too heavy of a meal. Next time would love to try the green pepper. We came on a Tuesday evening time and there was no wait.

Yelp
All the workers there were nice! The broth was rich and the flavors were all there. We had to get the crispy pork as well because when you have broth you need something crunchy to pair! It was a great pairing and we cant wait to go back. Highly recommend the tomato broth.

Yelp
Wow this place was packed! I came here on a cloudy, chilly day and was craving for some soup. And ohhhh, it was such a great choice coming here. I got the Laotan Suancai soup, Crispy Pork, and the Brown Sugar Glutinous Rice Cakes. Yo, the soup was DELISH. It was seasoned perfectly, had the right amount of everything, and wasn't too spicy! The fish was super fresh, was velvet-like, & super easy to eat and digest. It was a huuuuge portion and could easily feed 3-4. They serve the rice for you when the main entree comes out. The crispy pork was okay, but the Brown Sugar Rice Cakes were finger-licking GOOD! I'm still thinking about it while writing this. It doesn't keep well for leftovers since I couldn't scarf it down in one sitting but gawrsh, I wish I could eat it all day. The staff were extremely nice and got us everything we needed super quick and was easy for us to pay the bill. Come here if you want a super cozy meal and amaaaazing fish soup!

Yelp
These soups are so flavorful and tasty! I love their rice too! We got the yummy crispy pork, signature suan cai, Laotan suancai basa, Szechuan boiled beef, chicken tenders, tiger prawn roll, and brown sugar rice cake. You order at the table on a device and then when the food is ready, they bring it to your table. The spice level was perfect and service was friendly. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
YUMMMM I've been to Fish With You about 5 times now and I'd come back 5 more. It's nothing super fancy, but the flavors hit like home, especially the sauerkraut soups. My go to is the Signature bowl with basa or Green pepper. The tomato base is solid too, but once you've had the signature, it's hard to go back. The portions are huge. One pot easily feeds 2-3 (even 4 if you're light eaters), and the unlimited rice is great for the carb loaders, though we usually only get through one bowl. Only miss for me was the fried pork. Everyone hypes it up, but the "tomato sauce" is basically ketchup, and the pork was way too oily for my taste. Would skip that next time. Overall, great spot to share a cozy meal with friends, service is quick, very little English. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't been!

Yelp
If the fish soups weren't soooo spicy I would give this 6 stars. I could only handle so much and asked repeatedly to have them not put in any hot peppers or chili's but they said they couldn't accommodate me. After a few bites my mouth was on fire and couldn't continue, but what I was able to taste was their version of sauerkraut which was really invented in China anyway. Would love to come back and try other dishes without any fire breathing peppers. LOL

Yelp
Had dinner at Fish With You and I'm really glad I gave it a try. This place specializes in fish dishes and it was my first time trying something like this. We got the signature suancai & fish, the spicy mix, and the brown sugar rice cake. The fish soup was amazing! super tender fish with a slightly tangy broth from the pickled cabbage (suancai). There's szechuan peppercorns in there too, so just a heads up if you're not into that numbing, peppery flavor. I didn't mind it, but I made sure to avoid chewing them directly. The spicy mix was like a dry noodle dish with veggies and mushrooms, pretty good, but we definitely liked the soup more. Portion-wise, we got the small size and it was actually enough for the two of us. The brown sugar rice cake at the end was a nice little dessert, soft, chewy, and sweet. Overall, solid spot for a casual dinner. I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
This is the place to be for sauerkraut fish soup! Authentic Asian food, esp since menus are in Chinese too, haha. All the soups are very flavorful. Great to eat with a bowl of rice, which comes with 1pp. Portions are large, so it's perfect for sharing family style. Best believe I'll be back, if ever craving a warm comforting soup. Yum!

Yelp
The restaurant has a fun vibe and is clean. The service staff was quick and very accommodating. I got the golden soup fish and it was quite tasty. I appreciate the free rice that comes with it. Parking was easy as it's located in a plaza. However, I'm docking off a star for the small serving size. The bowl that they serve the soup in looks big, but it's actually shallow so it wasn't a lot of food. You're only getting half the amount of food you think you're getting.

Yelp
I came with a couple other friends and was seriously surprised by how good the signature suan cai fish soup was?? It was so hearty and comforting!! The default topping it came with was fine but I'd def wanna add cabbage or other stuff next time! The smaller pot size already HUGE and is enough for 2 people to share... We thought the golden beef soup was alright and lokey tasted like pizza LOL idk!! I think the bell peppers was kinda overpowering? We enjoyed the appetizers though!
google avatar

Bea P.

Yelp
I came on a Sunday during lunch and it wasn't too busy. I was interested in their take on fish and decided to give it a shot. I ordered a golden soup suncai and fish with vermicelli and bean curd. The lady who took my order said it was less sour but more spicy than their recommended laotan suncai and fish. It comes with unlimited rice which is nice. The dish came out looking real good and seemed a lot. It did not taste sour but the peppercorns can get ya. The bass fish tasted ok and was not too fishy. I got down to have the bowl and noticed that the food actually starts midway of the bowl which is why it looks more than it really is. I guess presentation is key! Unfortunately, my stomach did not feel good for the rest of the day and had to frequent the restroom often.

Yelp
This has been on my list for the longest time and I finally had the chance to go today. It did not disappoint! I got the signature suancai and fish with mild spicy and it was the perfect amount of spiciness. I got the large size and it fed two people and we still had some extra leftovers for the next day. I loved the potato starch noodles (they called it vermicelli) which comes with the meal as well as the lettuce and pickled veggies. I loved the peppercorns in the soup although we picked out some of the chilis so that it wouldn't make the broth too spicy once it was settled. If you get the large it also comes with two bowls of rice! I am curious to try the super beef with golden soup (they ran out today). I cannot wait to come back!
google avatar

Sam V.

Yelp
Menu was a bit confusing how it all works. Signature Suancai and the Laotan Suancai have the same broth, but for the latter you can choose which sides you want. The signature has a bunch of dried chilis, and preset potato noodles and lettuce. Loved the flavour of the soup with the pickled vegetables. Also enjoyed the golden beef. Different soup, but still great.

Yelp
I kept seeing this restaurant in my Yelp feed as a Hot and New restaurant, so I decided to check it out! Nestled in Convoy is this new Sichuan restaurant with an amazing flavor! I loved the fish at the front and inside there are signs everywhere featuring their soups. First of all you order from a barcode on the table and then they bring out your food. Staff were friendly and were open to answering any questions you may have. Signature Suancai & Fish - Large is good for 2-3 ppl! This bowl was huge! At a spice level 2, this was the def was my max tolerance . This soup was so flavorful & fish was so tender! This comes with two free rice but make sure to order it so that you get it with your soup. Brown Sugar Rice Cake - This was lightly crisp on the outside & chewy on the inside. Nice palate cleanser. Definitely a must return! Love this place. Parking can be a challenge and I was lucky to snag a spot. It wasn't too busy when I came, I arrived around 6pm on a weekday.

Yelp
For the pickled cabbage fish lovers, there is no other spot to go to! The flavors are rich and the spice has an authentic kick. I love pickled vegetable dishes and can say this is a niche type of cuisine that they do very well. I also ordered the sausage and crispy fried pork which was fairly typical in terms of taste and flavor. The interior felt vibrant and the staff were very attentive. I would definitely recommend a try!
google avatar

Yelp
Came in for Saturday dinner at 5PM and the restaurant was 40% capacity, by the time we left an hour later it was full with just a couple parties waiting outside. A decent amount of people swing by for pick up. The parking lot can be troublesome if you come past 6PM but there's always been open spots outside of peak meal hours. Food: - Golden Soup: Great. Exactly what I was looking for. Tender fish. Large portions. Balanced flavor of broth. Free rice! - Crispy Squid: They ran out of crispy pork so we chose these and they were good, not too salty/oily. - Taiwan sausage: Haven't had too many of these, but they were pretty good and similar to what I've had in Taiwan Service: Service was very okay which is why I can't give this place 5 stars, but it's probably because the staff and kitchen get really busy with pick up orders.

Yelp
It's always exciting to see a new concept debut in the Convoy District where there are so many duplicate styles. Fish With You opened in early March as part of the 2000+ store chain that originated in Beijing. The suite it took over was a notorious carousel of Asian eateries ranging from hot pot to BBQ skewers. The interior was modernized and brightened up with seating for well over 50 customers. The initial demand was high so much so that the promotions offered during the soft opening period were terminated early (e.g. 12% discount off the total bill). The specialty of the menu was suan cai yu. This was a sauerkraut and white fish stew cooked with Sichuan peppercorns and served like a hot pot. Two kinds of fish were available, basa and snakehead. If a sour and spicy flavor profile doesn't fit your palate, then a couple of alternatives were available like tomato or even a beef stew if fish is not your thing. Assorted fried small bites and appetizers could also be ordered. A regular portion was for one diner while a large portion was sufficient for two people. I selected a regular serving of Royal Tomato Fish with basa, tofu, enoki mushrooms, and dried soy skin as the components for my bowl. White rice with unlimited refills came with the order. What wasn't clear to me was how many types of rice were offered from the multiple cookers that were operating on a counter to the right of the register. My meal started with an appetizer of Crispy Squid. The fried squid had a light batter that was dusted with a chile pepper powder. There were about a dozen pieces in the dish. The bowl for the Royal Tomato Fish was rather shallow, however the amount of food for the price was adequate. The tomato broth was mild while the tofu and mushrooms provided a counter to the light flaky basa. For a fast-casual spot on Convoy Street, the value for the food quality was above average.

Yelp
It's a great place to get my spicy and sour fish fix and best way to clear my sinus I liked the orange and white color and the ambience. The fish statue in the store front is very cute. We picked a table and scanned the QR code to order. I tried Green Szechuan Pepper Suancai Fish (large was big enough for two to share). I added in vermicelli, bean curd, cabbage and tofu (you get 4 for free and additional sides are available). It was the right amount of spice and good flavor. The dish came with rice (you need it!). I also ordered brown sugar glutinous rice cake for dessert. It got busy by the time we were done with lunch. Get there early to find parking and get a table. It's worth the trip.

Yelp
There's not too many places with this type of food even on Convoy, so it's always exciting to try something new. The fish is cooked in this tangy and spicy broth and you get to pick which extras you want inside. The spicy mix is an upgraded version of instant noodles with all the toppings. It is much spicier than the fish dish so make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. I like the crispy chickpeas on top for that added crunch. It can get pretty loud, but it matches the vibe of the place since it's a chain restaurant. Ordering is fast since you just scan the QR code. If you go earlier in the evening, there's not much of a wait, but parking is still difficult in the plaza.

Yelp
really delicious! you get to pick which soup you want along with 3 toppings to go into the soup. it was just the right amount of spicy especially with the rice. we also got some fried coconut lava balls. it was perfectly fried and had a taro coconut sago inside. would definitely come again! came on a weekend and parking was really hard to find. but we were seated right away and the food came fast!

Yelp
Fish With You There was a cable show called River Monsters, the host Jeremy Wade, would be delighted to know I was brave enough to eat a snakehead fish! This restaurant opened over two months ago, and I had trepidation, because these are foods I don't typically eat and flashes of River Monsters season 2, episode 2 on the aggressive invasive, amphibious Snakehead fish still haunts me. But I eventually got the courage to venture to this restaurant and give it a try. - [ ] I ordered Fish With You's signature dish is the Suancai and Fish which includes snakehead fish, sauerkraut(fermented pickled vegetables) peppercorns, broth and red chilies. Additionally, the crispy squid, coconut lava balls and a Chinese green tea drink. The crispy quid were similar tasting to fried calamari but with Chinese seasoning salts were good. The coconut lava balls were crispy on the outside and filled with gooey coconut creamy white lava, not too sugary sweet, also good. Finally, the main attraction fish soup was presented , although I ordered a small, it was a hugh bowl, as big a birth bath or small fountain...and it could have fed four!! Served with bottomless steamed white rice. Although diners can eat unlimited rice, you have to ask the servers to fetch it for you. Diners were not allowed to help themselves with the rice. Servers were were often too busy to catch their attention was not good. The broth was aromatic, tasted like a version of spicy hot and sour soup with small slivers of fish, which included the variegated skin had the texture and taste similar to flounder. The assorted pickled vegetables, mostly cabbage, whole pepper corns and loaded with floating red chili peppers which had a lagged spicy effect. The flavor and taste of the veggies was too overpowering with vinegar to eat alone, but the rice helps neutralize the strong bitter pungent taste of the sauerkraut pickled veggies. I savored enough of the broth as I can but not the bitter veggies. I don't want to eat too much rice just to eat this. Despite its popularity, I will have to PASS on this and never reorder it, it's just NOT for Me. I asked the server for togo packing. The restaurant was clean, furnishings and decor was simplistic. The staff were helpful and tried to be accommodating despite the obvious language barrier issue, which is why they instruct customers to scan the menu sticker on the table, order and Epay. The food will be served by the staffers to your table. The restaurant filled quickly during lunchtime and only two staff servers, affected service, I had to flag down for attention. Most of the diners were Asians. A very chatty female sat a few tables from Me and her annoying voice was caught in one of my posted vidi, my advanced apologies. It's the #1 sauerkraut fish store, with over 2500 stores in 360 cities worldwide. Glad I had a chance to try this version of this dish. I've visited many areas of China and had versions of this dish, some swimming in chili oil and some in broth like this one. I don't eat this dish frequently but I do recall having had better edible versions in Beijing and Xi'An in China. No need to jet off to Asia to try this dish, as still it's worth a try, especially if you like spicy hot and sour soup. I would only revisit if they serve the bowl of soup with the snakehead fish's head and jaws of sharp teeth showing floating in the broth ;) would really make it a spectacular dining experience, an awesome content post River Monster. Yelp
I went with a friend and we ordered their signature Suancai & Fish for $26.95. I didn't expect it to be this big. Honestly, it can feed 3-4 people. The restaurant is new, very clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. This was my first time trying this style of food, and I loved it. The sourness was just right for me, and my favorite part is that I even have enough leftovers for my next lunch :)

Yelp
Found this place when going out to another restaurant. We ventured inside and were glad we did. The parking lot has plenty of spots for your car. The inside is very clean and has plenty of tables. I've never had to wait long. You order on your phone. Food was absolutely delicious. Recommend their special spicy sour fish!

Yelp
I'm obsessed!!! So glad I tried this place even though I originally felt overwhelmed. I've never had sauerkraut fish before and wasn't quite sure how everything worked. For a weekend lunch, we put our name down on the list outside and after a short 5-10 min wait, we were greeted and gestured to a table. There was a QR code on each table to order and the menu was available in both Chinese and English. Step 1) Pick the flavor. They are known for their sauerkraut fish which comes in a few different flavors - we opted for the Laotan flavor which is one of the most popular options and only 1 chili symbol. Other options include the signature oil, peppercorn, tomato soup, etc. Step 2) Select the size. You can select small or large portion, roughly translating to a 1 or 2 person portion size. The small size was good enough for 2 people since we also got an appetizer. Step 3) Select the type of fish. The basa fish is the regular type and you can upgrade to snakehead fish for an extra $3. Step 4) Select 2 add-ins. I highly recommend the tofu (they give you quite a bit and it's great as an extra protein and the broth is soaked into the tofu!) The cabbage was tasty too in the broth. I think the term "sauerkraut fish" doesn't truly line up with what the dish actually is - it is nothing like the German / typical sauerkraut but more like a pickled veggie you find in Chinese noodle soups. I don't like German sauerkraut but loved the taste of the broth and fish here! The sour taste is not too overpowering and very appetizing. They also have non-fish items on the menu like an assortment of beef pots, fried pork appetizer (delicious), and more. I also love how white rice is free with unlimited refills!! If your budget is tight, a small sauerkraut fish with the tofu add-on and unlimited white rice is only $15 (plus tax) for 2 people and absolutely the way to go!!! The service is friendly and they are patient in explaining the menu to first timers as well. They can get overwhelmed during busy hours and we found it a little challenging to wave someone down, but it was worth the wait. We've already been back another time in less than a week. Can't wait to revisit and try more flavors!

Yelp
Newly remodeled from the previous place that was here (shentan). Everything is a lot more bright and clean compared to before, deco offers a fast casual chain feel. You order through the QR code on the table, and everything came out at a reasonable speed. I had some questions on the fish and the waiters were good at helping to explain. Rice is free and unlimited. Fried starch sausage : 3/5 It's exactly what is described, too soft and starchy for my liking. Prefer the kind that's a mix of starch and meat Crispy pork: 4/5 Came out piping hot and fresh. Cut of the pork was a little too fatty but the flavor was good. Green Sichuan pepper suancai fish: 5/5 We chose the tofu and enoki as the two included add ons which I highly recommend. We got the small portion and it was enough for 2 to share. It tastes just like the ones I've had in China. The fish was tender and had no bones. Sauerkraut was very flavorful and spicy. The soup was flavorful, you can taste the addition of the green peppercorn. The firmness of the tofu was also perfect for the soup and the enoki soaked up all that delicious broth flavor. The price is really great given the portion of the fish and we were very happy with everything that we had.

Yelp
Very unique flavor and heartwarming kind of food. We ordered for takeout and got the signature suancai and fish, the green Szechuan pepper suancai and fish and the royal tomato fish. We added sides of enoiki mushrooms, black fungus, vermicelli and bean curd. All large size since we had 8 people and that ended up being the perfect amount. The flavor of each of the three is distinctive from each other so it was nice to get to try all of them. The tomato one was non spicy and a little on the sweeter side but had such a rich tomato flavor. The signature had a nice sour but not too sour taste and I loved the veggies in it. The green one had less sour flavor to me but still had a good richness. For takeout the soups come in large plastic bowls and they gave us 5 small portions of rice. We were able to pick it up shortly after ordering. It was my first time trying but I'd definitely go back and try it again.

Yelp
Tried the newly opened Fish with You with my family. The menu is simple, featuring fish, beef, and spicy mix bowls. We had the Green Pepper Sauerkraut Fish (black fish), Spicy Boiled Beef, and Molten Coconut Ball. The fish was tender, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with spice and tang--highly recommend! The beef was rich and spicy, great for sharing. Free unlimited rice is a nice touch. Prices are reasonable, about $20 per person. The place feels like a modern Chinese casual eatery--fast, affordable, and no-fuss. The owner even gifted my son an adorable mascot plush--so sweet! Will be back to try more flavors!

Yelp
I have been transported to China! This chain just soft opened and it's already jammed pack. They specialize in sauerkraut fish with different kinds of broth (from non spicy to very spicy/numb). Large portion is enough to feed two people and you get to pick four side dishes. There's two fish choices and I definitely recommend the snake head one. Has a nice bite and no bones. Large portion also comes with two bowl of rice. All this for 26.95 is such a great deal. Will definitely be back to try their other broths! Small restaurant but pretty decent in the amount of people/tables it fits. Parking is a bit tough, so come early to avoid crowds.

Yelp
I ordered a single portion of pickled fish with mustard greens and a single portion of spicy blood tofu stew in chili oil--perfect for two people. The dishes arrived quickly, were full of flavor, and went really well with rice. I also got a grilled squid, though unfortunately the size was quite small and I wish it were bigger. The restaurant's decor is crisp and clean, and the staff were warm and attentive. Overall, it offered good value for the price!

Yelp
Solid sour pickled fish. The large is enough for 2, but if you're really hungry you might want to add a few things to put in the soup.

Yelp
I LOVE sauerkraut fish soup and I've been bombarded by this place on my friends' IG stories and random reels, so I knew I had to give it a try. Parking was rough, I actually could not find parking despite circling for quite some time. I guess that is to be expected of weekend Convoy plaza parking. Regardless, once I stepped foot in the restaurant, I was charmed by the adorable fish mascot, punny name (in Chinese), and spacious, clean restaurant. Service was prompt and friendly. Personally, I am always more enthused by a Chinese restaurant that assumes from the get-go that I can speak Mandarin. To order, there is a QR code at every table, similar to ShanXi Magic Kitchen. I was in a party of 3 and we decided to order the large Signature fish, which includes two bowls of rice, and then order a third bowl. We also got the fried coconut balls as a sweet treat. I think they fry them in batches because ours came out early, along with the fried things that another table ordered. I had thought the balls were like glutinous sesame balls but they were actually rolled in tempura (?) bits instead of sesame. The coconut inside was like LAVA but in a good way; just be careful when biting into them. They also had bits of coconut meat and maybe sago as well. The crispy shell and creamy, not-too-sweet interior were so satisfying together! After we had devoured our coconut balls, it was time for the main event. The large size is MASSIVE and looks a bit scary, covered with dried chilis. However, despite its appearance (and two chili pepper rating on the menu) it is not that spicy, but rather a bit numbing from the szechuan peppercorn inside. There is plenty of pickled vegetables and they use Snakehead fish fillet, which is my preference over other white fish fillets for this dish. When we placed the order, I saw that the dish comes with vermicelli and lettuce. I was expecting thin vermicelli and lettuce leaves, but it was actually A choy lettuce stem and the really thick, chewy hotpot-style glass noodle. Both really carried the flavor of the broth and were just perfect with this dish. In all my years of loving lettuce stem I have never thought to throw it into soup, but I will absolutely start doing this going forward, as it gets so perfectly tender but not mushy. For about $40 this was a complete meal for the 3 of us, and we left the restaurant satisfied and slightly over-full. I saw folks order the small size fish and that alone looks adequate for two people. I will definitely come back here to try their other dishes, and to order more of those ridiculously good coconut balls!

Yelp
Came here with a friend to try their poplar sauerkraut fish soup. It was very tasty and had a spicy, numbing flavor as well. There are 2 sizes you can order, small for 1 person or large for 2 people. Small comes with a complimentary bowl of rice and large comes with 2 bowls. We also ordered the fried pork which was decent. We barely made a dent in the soup and I had another meal the next day. Service was fast and the interior was clean. Recommend checking it out!

Yelp
We showed up on an empty Monday night and try something we normally don't have in San Diego. I am coming in with virtually no info on this entree. They're known for one dish, so most people coming in probably know what to expect (like going to a pho restaurant - there's only one dish). My family grew up eating pickled veggies on the side, so I figured this isn't too far off in the experience. For a large bowl, you get unlimited rice portions for two people, but you'd have to flag down a staff member to refill it. The soup presentation was nice, but we don't really know if there's a suggested way to eat this. I found picking at the fish and the veggies is a good complement to the rice. Drinking the soup was too sour by itself - more tart than a hot and sour soup or a Thai soup. The wide glass noodles included in the soup seemed out of place, just more random goodies to enjoy? The crispy pork was average, it tasted more like under seasoned popcorn chicken. I figure this place would be good for those seeking a nice hot soup on a cold day, like today. It's nice to have variety in convoy. But I kind of wish there is more of an introduction to this style of food. Also, most people are rating 5 stars to get their free drink, so take these reviews with a grain of salt.

Yelp
Disappointing. Ok fish soup with vegetables -suan cai yu. Split large signature fish soup and a side of crispy oyster rolls with a friend . Dislikes: 1. No explanation of anything, even when you ask! They just direct you with hand gestures to scan the code on the table and order online. 2. You can't choose which fish you want via online ordering. We were forced to have the snakefish which was average mild white fish strips with strips of skin on. I wanted Basa but was told I could only have snakefish with the signature large soup that I ordered online. 3. You cannot choose spice level if you order online. Our soup came out mild- I would've preferred more spice. 4. You cannot choose your sides. The reviews I read said they chose their sides to add to the soup but when we ordered, we were not allowed to choose any options! No explanation given. We got only lettuce stem, glass noodles, pickled cabbage. 5. Condiments included only salt, sugar, soy sauce, black vinegar. But you have to grab the caddy yourself from the register area, they don't leave it on the tables. When I asked for dipping sauce for the oyster rolls, I was given the option of spicy or sweet. I chose spicy and they brought out dry chili powder?! I was expecting a sauce. The chili powder wasn't flavorful at all. 5. Pitchers of water on the table are not cold enough. The single use plastic cups have a rim which is uncomfortable to drink from. 6. The oyster rolls didn't have much oyster flavor. At least they were crispy Will not be back. I have had much better suan cai yu. I don't understand how there are more than 200 branches of this place or how it is successful?!

Yelp
This place is so delicious! My bf and I came here after a long day and had the green pepper sauerkraut fish soup. The broth was sour and very flavorful. Highly recommend if you're looking for something new and filling. Price wise it is pretty affordable and portion sizes are large for two people even. Service is prompt and servers are friendly. Will be coming back again!

Yelp
I liked the food here. We ordered through the QR code and the food came fairly quickly. Service was average. A bottle of water is placed on the table so aside from serving us our dishes we were pretty self sufficient. We ordered the Laotan sauerkraut bowl which came with 4 sides to add into the soup, super beef series, and a fried pork soup. These soups are very hearty and consists of potato noodles, pickled veggies and spices. They gave us each a bowl of rice as well. We were stuffed. These dishes are spicy so make sure you're aware of the spicy levels. The beef soup was the only one that wasn't spicy . Also although thr fried pork soup was tasty it was on the salty side. I enjoyed the Sichuan flavors .

Yelp

Yelp
The wife and I came here to try it out based on the rave reviews. Although it wasn't a 5 star experience for us, we were not disappointed and we will definitely be back. The short of it: I ordered a small Laotan Suancai w/ Snakehead fish (minus the numbing peppercorns), while the wife ordered a small Green Szechuan Pepper with Basa fish. Both meals were really tasty and really filling (we each ended up taking leftovers home). It was a little confusing on what to order the first time there, but the service provided was great for us newbies. If you want more detail, read on... :) TLDR: When the wife and I came in we were the only non-Asians there, and I think this fact led the cashier, after she seated us, to explain the menu to us and the ordering process. Being newbies to this place we appreciated this customer service: she explained the difference between the Basa fish (which she said most Americans order) v the Snakehead fish (which is more popular with Asians). She also informed us that we order from our phone via the QR Code on the table (which has the table number built into it), and said that if we didn't want the numbing/tingling spice in our soups that under the "Options" for each soup we could click on "No Sichaun peppercorn". She recommended ordering two of the small soups (one each) so that we could try each others. I got the small Laotan Suancai with the Snakehead fish (a $3 upgrade option on the menu after selecting Laotan Suncai Basa). I got it with Enoki Mushrooms and Black Fungus, and I said "No Sichaun peppercorn". My wife got the small Green Szechuan Pepper with Basa; she kept the numbing peppercorns; she also opted for the Mushrooms and Fungus. Both soups came with a complimentary bowl of white rice; they didn't come out with the soup, but rather when a fresh batch of hot rice had finished cooking they brought the bowls to all the tables. The kitchen confused our orders (the snakefish soup was loaded with peppercorns, while the basa soup had no peppercorns). We informed them of this and they took them back to the kitchen and made us new orders from scratch. Be warned: THE SOUP COMES OUT REALLY REALLY HOT. Next time around I will patiently wait 5 minutes or so before taking my first spoonful so that I don't burn my tongue again. Somehow a few numbing peppercorns made it into my soup... most of meal was numb-free, but halfway through a couple of bites definitely had Sichaun peppercorns in them because my mouth got that tingly sensation for a little while, but then it went away. My wife's soup was loaded with those peppercorns...maybe a few hopped from her bowl to mine on the way to the table. Our meals were really filling: despite really liking our orders, at the end of the meal we both ended up requesting a to-go container to take our leftovers home. We were too stuffed at that point to try any dessert. No doubt that we'll be back; and next time I'll save some room to try those Brown Sugar Rice Cakes for dessert. :)

Yelp
The food was delicious and reminded my friend of home. Service was quick and they were attentive to when we needed more rice. I like the clean white and orange feeling of the restaurant too. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu!
