An Illustrated Guide to Texas Gulf Coast Seafood | Eater Houston

"A Galveston mainstay where daily catches are common — expect to see spring sport fish like sheepshead show up as a catch-of-the-day — and enjoy delicate preparations such as a panko-breaded flounder filet served with angel-hair pasta, garlic, tomatoes, and fresh basil." - Amy McCarthy

Nice seafood spot by the port. Our view included the nearby cruise ship along with other marina boats. This restaurant is a two-story and spread out space with inside and outside dining options as well as private party. I appreciated the simple menu focused on classics and their use of fresh ingredients. It seems a little pricey to charge $21 for a single crab cake appetizer but otherwise their prices were fair.

Google
We had the grilled seafood platter, grilled redfish and the seafood pasta dish. The redfish and seafood pasta were very good. The platter was very good except for the crab cakes, they were very salty and under cooked. The green salad was average. The red sangria was excellent! We enjoyed the outdoor dining, great view of the battleship USS Texas. They give you 3 hours of free parking, this place is very close to the Strand.

Google
1st time here, very friendly staff. We were sat right away, greeted by Amber our server within minutes. We split the Wharf seafood platter with additional side of onion strings! So much food! Everything was cooked perfectly. And THEN, then we had the Root Beer bread pudding! So delicious, save room you want to have the bread pudding!

Fisherman’s Wharf Galveston, TX. One of the best seafood restaurants in Galveston, Fisherman’s Wharf is renowned for the freshest fish and seafood specialties. signature seafood combination platters, savory chicken dishes, pastas and perfectly prepared steaks. Ideally situated next to the Historic Strand District. Located about 50 miles southeast of Houston, it's a popular resort city with attractions like The Strand Historic District, Moody Gardens, and Schlitterbahn Waterpark, and holds significance as the birthplace of Juneteenth. A major cruise port and popular destination with millions of visitors annually.

When we come to Galveston we always stop at The Fisherman’s Ward Seafood Grill. We love watching cruise ships, dolphins, and birds from the outside seating. Consistently good it’s always a good time. I had the Greek salad with grilled shrimp. While the shrimp were perfectly prepared the salad left a bit to be desired. It was heavy on feta and dressing and sparse on olives, cucumbers and tomatoes. My husband had the fish and chips, along with a bowl of gumbo. Both were excellent.

Google
Birds came to bug us outside. One even stole something off my plate. Good Shrimp kisses!! My drink was weak, I had Malibu and pineapple. Didn't even get a slight buzz and I'm not a regular drinker. They did give me a sundae for my birthday. Thank you! Port was fun to watch. We saw some dolphins surfacing in the channel.

We came to Fisherman’s Wharf as part of our experience at the Dickens on the Strand Victorian themed festival. Due to a miscommunication one half of our reservation was late by a significant amount. The first half of us sat and ate and waited for the other half. The staff were extremely polite and professional. Very welcoming. The inside was beachy themed bht really nice classy kind of place. Outside was ideal seating to see the water and harbor and comings and going’s there. It was nice and quiet at the time we went (not loud restaurant music or large groups of people) The bathrooms were clean. The food was very tasty. The season their fries nicely, I had fried shrimp and my husband had a mixed platter with steaks and such and it was all good. For kids menus they had hamburgers, grilled cheese, chicken strips, shrimp, fish or chicken and fish plates. They may change the menu but it seemed good typical kid options. Pricing was good, to be expected for a sit down place. A little more expensive than fast food but not overpriced in my opinion. If you sit outside you can see the Elissa which is a really great rare historical tall ship to pay to go on to see. But don’t leave your food too long in case a hungry gull or crow flies by. It does say to please not feed the birds because it will draw more attention for all the birds and make outdoor eating more difficult for the guests and owners. We did make reservations due to the festival but it seemed unnecessary. However, please do what you think is best for your circumstances. I did not bring our stroller inside but probably could have for some of the seating areas if it was a small stroller. I don’t think it was necessary to bring. The outdoor chairs were a large plastic chair at a good height for adults and kids. Lovely experience!

Google
The place is very beautiful and has a nice atmosphere, but the food isn’t really good. The dishes lack seasoning and the flavors don’t stand out. It’s a shame because the place has great visual appeal, but the quality of the food doesn’t match.

Harry L.

Yelp
Our waitress Katie took special care of us. We did not have to wait for anything. Water glasses were always filled and made sure we had everything. We got ready for desert and found out it was my wife's birthday and brought out an ice cream sundae for her and I had the best bread pudding in a long time. We don't live in Galveston but if we did this would be one of our go to places.

Yelp
Other than a short wait, our service was impeccable! We chose to sit indoors because it was warm outdoors. They sat us upstairs in a room overlooking the harbor and it was really nice. The food was delectable! I cannot say enough about my platter!! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
First time coming here on a surprise 3 1/2 hour trip I took my gf on to come out to dinner and get out of town. She thought we were going to Lake Charles (we are from Lafayette, La) , which is an hour away from Lafayette . Our spontaneous dinner date couldn't have been any better with our pick of Fishermans's Wharf. Our server Tiffany kicked some a** and kept us laughing the whole time and was beyond knowledgeable of the menu. That is by far the biggest fish dish I have I ever ordered. It wouldn't die, no matter how dead it already was, I just couldn't totally kill it. Not to mention that Flounder was incredible. Will definitely be back here. Props to both Tiffany and the Manager Dakota who made our awesome date night that much better. Till next time Fisherman's Wharf, happy Saturday.

Yelp
I stopped by here last night with my family for dinner. I had been out with the twins at the beach, and when I came back my wife said she wanted to order from Fisherman's Wharf. She pulled up a menu and placed the order by phone. When we arrived, I jumped out to get the food, which was ready and sitting at the corner of the bar. The inside of this place looked a little swankier than most of the restaurants I had been to in Galveston, and all three bartenders were super busy making drinks for the Friday night crowd. Eventually one came over to help me, and I was quickly on my way. For dinner that evening, I went with the fried flounder sandwich while both my wife and mother-in-law chose the lobster and crawfish pasta. My entrée was described as coming with lettuce, tomato, red onion, coleslaw, pickles, and tartar sauce, while my wife's was described as Maine lobster, crawfish tails, penne pasta, sweet lobster cream sauce, parmesan, and mozzarella cheese. The fish on my sandwich was fried nicely, and while I couldn't really tell what fish it was (can you ever, really?) it tasted good enough. The bun was toasted, and the coleslaw and tartar sauce added some nice flavors and moisture to the sandwich. The fries were well seasoned and tasted good, even if they were a little soggy by the time I got to them. Both my wife and mother-in-law enjoyed their pastas, and they both appreciated the amount of lobster. The bottom line for me is that I might stop by here again in the future. Our food was solid, though a bit on the expensive side, and while I'd certainly eat here again in the restaurant, I don't know that I'd do takeout again.

Yelp
Seafood story follow up :) Service and atmosphere: Another visit another great experience. Service was excellent! Atmosphere was very good in this clean and well located restaurant. Food and drinks: Kudos to our server who brought us warm bread with butter to snack on even though we didn't order it. That was a very nice gesture! Tasty food and good drinks all around after that. Food was well presented and well cooked. The flavours and seasonings were spot on. Pricing: $$/$ - dinner for two with drinks (no appetiser nor dessert) came to $100.

Yelp
We stopped to eat dinner here after doing the Galveston Naval Museum (also recommend) and it hit the spot! Our server, JJ, was amazing and very attentive! Food was excellent as well. The restaurant was quick to seat us and was not a long wait for food. Place was clean including the bathrooms. We would definitely visit again!

Yelp
Stopped in for a late lunch while spending the weekend in Galveston. Had nice water views from our table. Our server was great. The food was good too. The key lime pie is a must try. I would definitely stop in again!
google avatar

Sharon C.

Yelp
Loved the shrimp kisses!! But was disappointed in the fried seafood, it was just not very good-tried the fried platter so had fish, shrimp, oysters, crab cakes and luckily 2 more shrimp kisses. I would only return for shrimp kisses. However, loved water view and waitress was good.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Really lovely place right on the water. Plenty of outside seating. Really well priced happy hour menu, during the week, but you have to sit in the bar area to take advantage of that. The fish tacos were disappointing. Flour tortillas, not crisped up or warmed up. Just not a lot of flavor. On the other hand, the shrimp kisses (bacon wrapped) were fabulous, as was the shrimp nachos. Highly recommend both.
google avatar

Sunny C.

Yelp
Most of the food was just okay. The clam chowder was really good though. The outdoor seating was pretty neat, you can see the water and the ships in the distance. The service was a bit sub par. Our server seemed like she rushed our order and got our drinks wrong. And both times the drinks came pretty slow. But could have been a 4th of July rush. There is 3 hr parking validation which is nice.
google avatar

Ariadna S.

Yelp
The food and the local beer we got were pretty good. The front staff were really nice. We got our parking validated as we arrived. The outside space was really nice, it was pleasant to see some boats passing. Not too loud, just a right amount of noise to comfortably have a conversation. The service at the table left a lot to be desired though. Our server did not know her beers and then brought two tea based drinks instead of the beers we ordered (the names of the beverages were similar, but I wouldn't hurt to double check if in doubt). We had to ask another server for the correct drinks because we couldn't find our server. Overall not very attentive. We were not offered a dessert when we finished the entree, just the check.

Yelp
Oh my. How disappointing tonight's dinner was. The only saving grace was our waitress, Andrea, who was exceptionally attentive. Shrimp cocktail had small shrimps, lobster bisque was broken (ie coddled, not smooth) and nearly every bit of crab was tasteless and had pieces of shell. The crab cake was more bread, onion and celery than crab. Def not lump crab. It was topped with more crab, which would have been ok but again filled with shells and no seasoning. The side of potatoes was so heavily seasoned and salted that it irritated my tongue! The snapper was properly cooked. The Elissa sauce was ok but again, the crab had shells and the artichoke hearts were chewy. If you must dine on the harbor, there are many better choices, including Willie G's next door. It's owned by Landry's as well, but they seem to execute much better. Despite a nice view and dog friendly patio, we won't be back.

Yelp
The Best clam chowder, Oysters and we tried the oysters Rockefeller. Excellent. Thank you for the great service Melissa!

Yelp
Loved sitting outside and enjoying the scenery while we enjoyed our meal! Great food and service

Yelp
This place has the best view, we sat on the water and watched d The sun set, our server was so accommodating and friendly, the food was outstanding. Love coming here, really enjoyed our 4 year anniversary:)
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant was extremely good but also very expensive the shrimp was too small in the kids meal

Yelp
Love this place. The Judge, and I would go often on his boat. I miss it great place if you have a boat. although you can get there by car on the other side, food was great. Service and ambience beautiful

Yelp
My wife and I came to Fisherman's Wharf for a date night, and overall, it was a great experience! The location is perfect -- right by the water, with a nice view of the harbor and some big ships passing by. It gave the evening a relaxed, coastal vibe that we both really enjoyed. We started with the shrimp queso that was a definite win -- full of flavor and just the right amount of spice. For our mains, I had the fish, crab cake and shrimp kisses and my wife got the tenderloins, crab cake with brussel sprouts. Both dishes were fresh and well-cooked, and the sides were awesome. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We never felt rushed, which made the evening feel more personal and unrushed. We'll definitely be back, maybe for a later sunset meal on the patio next time!
google avatar

Adryn I.

Yelp
Service was 10/10. Mia was great and very accommodating. Vibes were awesome, love the decor. Would've sat outside but I sweat too much. But it looked great out there! We loved the appetizer as well, we got the shrimp queso dip. My wife's dish was lovely, she got the chicken elissa. Everything about it was great, the presentation, portions and flavor! I got the flounder sandwich and I did enjoy it, but unfortunately the bread was quite soggy and fries were a bit underwhelming and cold. Didn't get a pic of the cheesecake because we ate it so fast. So. Good. Overall, we really enjoyed it and will definitely come back! Also random thing I loved: glass ketchup bottles!

Yelp
We had a very late lunch, so came here for happy hour drinks and dessert. Happy hour is a decent bargain. We sat outside and had Becky as our server. She was fun and attentive and a blast to have wait on us. She made our table have even more fun (and we do pretty good on our own!). And, the Key Lime Pie was to die for!

Yelp
The middle of November 2024 we were in Galveston to leave on our weeklong cruise. We arrived the day before so we could make sure we could be at the ship on time. We decided to go out and explore a bit and have dinner. We decided on Fisherman's Wharf since it was one of the few places we were able to find parking. Parking in the Strand area of Galveston is very challenging. Probably the easiest thing to use is a ride-share. We were greeted warmly. The restaurant is massive and has so much "eye candy" to take it. Everywhere you look there is something so interesting. We were seated in the covered outdoors area. Next to us the Elissa is docked. The Elissa, built in 1877, is a floating National Historic Landmark. It is a beautiful ship. As we were sitting there, I searched for the ship and saw pictures of the restoration. We were told they take the ship out in Galveston harbor once a year. OK, back to the menu. It was late and we didn't want too much but ordered WAY too much anyway. My wife ordered a strawberry daiquiri, and I ordered one of their special margaritas. To round out our meal, I ordered a dozen oysters on the half-shell, a side salad, lobster bisque and an order of fried pickles to share. WAY TOO much but it was too late to change. The ambiance of sitting outside by the ship and listening to the water sloshing on the sides of the pier area was so relaxing. Both of our drinks were very good. The oysters, bisque, salad and pickles were so delicious. The best part was being able to relax and have a nice dinner before heading back to our hotel.

Yelp
We went for lunch during the week recently. I was very disappointed they did not have a lunch menu unless you eat in the bar. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside. The only item on the menu affordable for lunch was the Flounder Sandwich. Do better for those wanting to have lunch during the week and sit outside, not in the bar.
google avatar

Yelp
We ALWAYS have stopped here to eat when we come to Galveston. It's on the water with good views-there is a tall ship docked next door and you can see the USS TEXAS a WW II Battleship in restoration mode across the Port of Galveston. We didn't see any dolphins this time but we have in the past -so 5 stars for ambiance. The service was very good and we tipped accordingly. Our main server was attentive and helpful. The gentleman that assigned us our table (waterside) must have (or should have) known the 4-top would have the slowly setting sun shining on us no matter which seats. It became so hot I was pouring sweat down my face and my clothes became saturated. It was uncomfortable for both of us but at that time there weren't other open options. =3 stars. We have always ordered fish & seafood here and this time was no exception. I also ordered a Mango Mule which didn't taste like mango or a mule..... We felt the food just wasn't up to par based on our other experiences here. The heat didn't help.... But we will try another restaurant next time. Kind of sad since it was a place we both looked forward to. Stars for food= 2. In conclusion we have Fisherman's Wharf a total of 3.2 STARS.
google avatar

Phillip W.

Yelp
This place was packed! It is right on the water and has some beautiful views. The prices seem kind of high and the atmosphere is very touristy. I was in the mood for some fish and chips so I ordered the captains platter which came with fried fish, shrimp, fries, coleslaw and bread. The meal was very average. The fries and the shrimp were good, but the rest of the plate was a disappointment. The fish was undercooked and just fell apart. The breading was very bland and had no seasoning. The whole meal was just so so. I only saw the server who took my order twice once when she took my order and once when she brought me the check. This left me very dissatisfied with my lunch. I think their main clientele, are tourists that will only go to the restaurant once.
google avatar

Lisa K ..

Yelp
We came in by phone reservations. The service and ambiance were excellent, the food didn't meet our expectations, especially given the high Yelp ratings. Overcooked shrimp and mussels, misleading portions, and unexpected spice levels can certainly be disappointing, particularly on a first visit. Highlighting both the positives--like the attentive service and convenient location. Hopefully, it was just an off day, and our next visit will be more enjoyable!

Keri S.

Yelp
The service was wonderful Marcus was our server and did a wonderful job! The food was fresh and amazing. Will defiantly be back again!

Miranda D.

Yelp
Place is amazing! Food is amazing! Staff is amazing! We went here a couple of times when on vacation &' got something different every time! This place is somewhere I would go a lot if I lived here!

Susan E.

Yelp
Josh was an amazing server!! The service was fast and friendly! We ordered fried shrimp, fish & chips, and tuna tacos. It was all good, but the tuna tacos were exceptional! We had a window table with a view of the Tall Ship, Elyssa. We definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Tara H.

Yelp
Waited an hour to get in and 45 mins to be served my meal only to be disappointed. Fresh redfish was pretty dry and flavorless. Whole meal lacked flavor. Crab topping seemed emptied from a can on top with zero seasoning. Outdoor seating seemed nice but very humid and sweaty outside even at night. Boats coming and going expel fumes at you. Not romantic or comfortable.
google avatar

Monica V.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent! Thank you to our server Ennis for a great experience! 10/10
google avatar

Angel H.

Yelp
Ambiance is great. Patio is nice if it's not too hot out there. Service was good . Food was ok. Nothing special but definitely enjoyed the patio by the ocean.
google avatar

HsiaoCheng W.

Yelp
The fried and grilled fish filets were basa. Tender and cooked just right. The smash burger was nice sized. Service was pretty good and staff was nice. Just park in the lot that has the 3 hours validation sign (the one right in front of the restaurant does) and give the restaurant your license plate number. There are cameras at the exit of the gated parking that will scan your license plate and let you out without the need for a ticket which is so old school these days apparently.
google avatar

Matthew F.

Yelp
We enjoy eating here prior to our cruises (the food is good here!) but on Oct 26th we got hustled a little bit. We ordered a beer and food to go at the bar. I paid $42.72 with a credit card (I still have the receipt) and gave a cash tip. Today, Nov 8th after returning home, I found I was charged an extra $10 NOT ON THE RECEIPT. So just beware and double check you charges. The receipt says the server was Echo but it was Michael that received the tip and handled the transaction.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
Happy hour is served in the lounge from 11-6 M-F. Lots of bar seating, high top tables, and a few regular tables as well with view of the water. I ordered the fish and chips for $8, which also came with their house bread and butter as well. The food came quickly and the batter on the fish was super crispy. There were only two pieces of fish but they were a decent size for a quick happy hour bite. Actually, the house bread was a surprising favorite! Did not take a picture but there were three small French style rolls which were delightfully fluffy.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
The portions are huge! Went to one of the restaurants at Galveston's most popular strip to taste some American food and it was sort of a miss. Starting off with the bread, it is definitely one I would skip. Even though it was free, the bread was dry, stale, and tasted sour and the butter did not help it. I got one of their Seafood Platters that consisted of oysters, crab cake, shrimp stuffed crab mix, etc. Although it sounded appealing, each one of them ending up tasting the same, even the crab wasn't anything special. The Shrimp Pasta dish was decent. I like how big the shrimp were but the flavor was lacking and just tasted like noodles and sauce, I had to add salt and pepper to it. But I liked the boat piratey interior, it really adds to the name and the service was great! Overall, 6/10.

Emily F.

Yelp
Chrissy was a wonderful waitress!! Nine adults and ten children! Wow!! She got everyone's order and delivered it all with a smile!
google avatar

Samettria B.

Yelp
This place has potential maybe I need to try something else. We ordered the fish sandwich based off of looks. It was very disappointing. The fish was Panko breaded which is a disservice to this fish sandwich. Secondly the bread was stale. Third the fried jalapeno's were mushy in texture. The location is nice. We sat on the water. The wait staf nice as well. Maybe if we decide to go back we will try the baked foods. Because this fried fish was not it.
google avatar

Deidra B.

Yelp
We have not been here in a while! I was very pleasantly surprised with the happy hour. Met some friends out and we all had a great time. Had some shrimp queso, calamari and HH fish and chips: Everyone loved their food, our server was so sweet and pleasant and on point!!! We had a few tables of about 8 people for a retirement HH. Can't wait to go back we had not been in a long time but it was great. Give it a try!
google avatar

Alicia K.

Yelp
Nice view of the Battleship Texas renovations while we had a fried seafood fest. The crab cakes were a little bready and the fries were unremarkable, but over all our food was tasty, our server was very pleasant and everything was clean and quiet.
google avatar

Korey W.

Yelp
Oh man, where to start. Ordered the catfish dinner, but blackened with fries. It was served on a bed of fries. Idk about anyone else, but I don't want my fries to taste like fish. The catfish was very slimy and I could only stomach 4 bites that were masked by loads of tartar sauce. A buddy ordered the same thing and also only ate a few bites. This was the worst experience. For $150 for two people you would think that you'd be in for a treat. The wife's mahi mahi was bland as hell. We have much better establishments in Iowa.
google avatar

Nancy A W.

Yelp
This was my first time here and I enjoyed the experience. I loved that the restaurant was next to a museum and could see some boats in the area. I had the fried seafood platter and I loved the shrimp kisses, crab cakes and fish fillet. It was tough to recognize what the items were since it was fried but once I had it I liked it. I will say I did not enjoy the fried oyster but it was my first time eating one so I'm sure it was good for those who enjoy oysters. Other than that, I enjoyed my time there.

Kristina G.

Yelp
We opted to sit outdoors, nice evening out and nice breeze from the water. Water view and old ships...lovely. Served warm bread and butter, very good. We ordered the crab cakes for appetizers, and they were delicious. Nice crunch, sauce was tasty...serving was four. We ordered the grilled shrimp, served over rice and grilled veggies. Side salad. Very good, shrimp were flavorful, veggies perfectly cooked. Lobster tails were delicious...that butter sauce was fire! Honestly though, the lobster tails didn't really need it but they did at the same time just because it's butter and delicious! Baked potato was cooked perfectly, skin salty and crispy which I love. We did it...had to order the rootbeer bread pudding! Who wouldn't want a rootbeer and bread pudding baby. It was very good, served warm over ice cream...surprisingly not too too sweet. Service was great...waitress was very attentive, prompt, and made some good suggestions. Lovely evening and great food...definitely our favorite place thus far in downtown district. Will definitely be back to try some other yummy dishes.

Yelp
The food was not that great. I had the fried cod and it was standard fair and did not blow me away. The gumbo had a nice taste but could be a bigger portion. The view is standard boats and gulf. Fun for what it is but nothing spectacular. The service is great, you will have a very good waiter or waitress most likely.
google avatar

Diana R.

Yelp
Number one reason I wanted to leave a review was because the staff was absolutely lovely, from the hostess, to the woman walking us to our table and our server everyone was so kind and helpful. I got the fried shrimp, very good solid 8/10 personally the starter bread lacked a little flavor but it was a nice place to eat especially outside. The view is wonderful.

Yelp
Popped into Fisherman's Warf on a Saturday with no reservations and requested a table outside. We were informed there would be a wait so we hung out at the bar and were quickly greeted and taken care of, before we could even finish our drinks our table was ready after all! Our server, Summer, was so friendly and made a point to ask about food allergies and ask if we had any questions. Between the service and the ambiance being on the water, I thought it couldn't get much better- and then the food came! The crab legs were an absolute favorite and well worth the price tag, as were the oysters and crab stuffed Tilapia. From start to finish we had a great time and enjoyed great food! One tip: be prepared to park in the paid lot outside, but don't worry, your parking will be validated inside!
google avatar

Bob P.

Yelp
This is a tough review for me. What's not to like about a place right on the water with great views. It has an old restaurant feel (in a good way), and the ambiance has that wharf feel to it. Downsides were the happy hour menu was minimal and didn't reflect that Galveston seafood flare. Where's the charbroiled oysters? Where's the gumbo?? Also, the service was adequate, but didn't have that friendly feel like we got everywhere else. Worth giving it a try. Hopefully they'll make some improvements to make this stop a 'WOW' like it should be.

Simeko O.

Yelp
Fisherman's Wharf was a great spot! I had the Pier 22 margarita--it was tasty and strong. I ordered the shrimp combo plate, and my hubby got the stuffed tilapia. Both were cooked just right. We also shared the shrimp queso, which was really good. Overall, a fun meal! Four stars.
google avatar

Tamika C.

Yelp
Nice location, on the water near cruise port terminals. Staff was nice and friendly. Service was great. They accept reservations, our party of 8 was set immediately. We came in Memorial Day at 6pm, and didn't have a long wait for food and our server was nice.

Yelp
Fisherman's Wharf was a great meal to end the trip in Galveston! We got there before sunset so got to experience that and watch the dolphins. I ordered the market sampler with the shrimp kisses being my favorite. The fish filet and crab cakes were also good, and get the shrimp skewer as blackened shrimp. I ordered the Pier 22 drink without the melon liqueur which is the way to go. Enjoyable evening here!!
