The Best Fish and Chips on the Oregon Coast | Eater Portland

"There are lots of spots in Oregon to eat near the water, but fewer where you can eat on the water. Located just under the Coos Bay Boardwalk, Fishermen’s Seafood Market is a floating market and eatery serving lightly breaded fish and chips, cranberry-studded coleslaw, and clam chowder made with Coos Bay butter clams. Guests can enjoy their meals in the enclosed floating dockside seating area on tables decorated with photos of dory boats, soaking in views of the bay and the bustling harbor activity." - Emily Teel

Google
Great fish and chips restaurant. Highly recommend if you are passing through Coos Bay. You won't regret trying their freshly caught seafood. The rockfish taste was awesome. The couple are extremely nice and lovely. The restaurant is literally on the water which makes the experience even better

Google
We had a great meal of halibut fish & chips and my husband had a cup of clam chowder. Generous portions with great taste. Lightly breaded and not greasy. Tasty coleslaw came with it. Service was very friendly. You do have to go down a steep ramp to the dock. Best for couples or up to four in your group, as the seating is limited. Would highly recommend. It was a fun experience.

This place is my favorite place for fish and chips in Coos Bay! I'm not from the area and the coleslaw with cranberries was a first for me and was absolutely fantastic! I try to eat here at least once a week!

Google
Love this restaurant! I go to the place so much I feel like I own it. The chowder is made with a bunch of love. The chef they brought in from Colorado is a pretty funny guy. And the new owner is quite the gentleman himself. Really can't go wrong if you want to eat fish and chips while floating on the water. They have all done their best to uphold the previous owners standard for excellence and might I say they are close to that mark. No notes great fish and excellent chowder!

Google
This unique little joint on the water in Coos Bay was a perfect spot to satisfy our craving for fresh, perfectly cooked fish and chips. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Everything tasted super fresh—from the crispy fish (we also really enjoyed the prawns and oysters) to the house-made clam chowder. It’s the kind of local spot we’d want to come back to again and again.

Google
Wow. Best fish and chips on the coast. And we have tried them all . The clam chowder is full of clams with lots of clam flavor. Really friendly people here and fun on the water dining area. If you are fish and chips people, don't pass up this quiet and delicious eatery .

Google
Family owned business great food, friendly and great service. I highly recommend trying them out when you drive across Coos Bay off of the 101 highway.

Google
Owner was very welcoming and showed us the fresh fish along with the other seafood they use. I got the combo and it was all cooked perfectly and tasted great! The chowder had great flavor and right amount of potatoes, clams and bacon. It’s a good thing we aren’t from here cause this place would be a regular for us… you are actually eating right over the water so that’s a bonus!

Yelp
They have the best clam chowder ever!! They told me the recipe is over 100 years old. Loved it. Also got the fried oysters + fish n chips and they were so delicious. The batter was so light (not like your traditional thick batter) and fried perfectly crispy. Cool small spot floating on the water, a lot of old fishing pictures and funny signs. The service was great and had cool conversations with the guys working. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Best clam chowder in a bread bowl! Owner has his heart and soul in this little gem. The chowder is truly homemade and can be served in a sourdough bread bowl if you like. The bread is fresh and oh so good! Enjoy your food while floating on the water. A great inside or outside seating.

Yelp
We came upon here looking for a spot to stop in coos bay. I like the idea of the floating restaurant. It's pretty cute. I also like the customized nautical playlist. They use a panko instead of a batter. Personally I prefer the latter. My wife was a big fan of what we got. The fish was fresh and the breading was just the right amount and consistency. I got the prawns. I like that they don't have tails but in my opinion butterflying and frying dries it out and makes it tough. The chowder was nothing special. All the requisite parts of a chowder. Nice and thick but not a lot of stuff in it. Very friendly staff and fun spot. I'd be back.

Yelp
We were wanting fish and chips and Fisherman's had great reviews. The staff were super friendly as they told us about the menu. We were first impressed that they were using locally caught rock fish. The they shared that the coleslaw and clam chowder was made fresh daily. We were sold! It was fun to eat on top of the water in the floating dining room that swayed and rocked slightly with the waves. I don't like coleslaw, but I ate every bit. The one thing I will share is if you don't know where to park, it can be challenging. But know you can park along the one way road and easily get to the restaurant.

Yelp
The Mrs & I worked up an appetite walking thru the Farmers Market, checking out the shops in the area & went here for an early lunch. What a unique place. Right on the water, you feel the flooring rise & fall with the waves as they hit the shore. We placed our order & went to their exterior covered patio. Gives you a nice view while you enjoy your meal. We asked for a cup of chowder each. You really have to try the clam chowder everywhere you go. Every restaurant boosts of " Award Winning Chowder." We decided we'd spilt the fish (salmon) & chips. The salmon was just delicious. A crispy coating fried to perfection, covered the firm, pink flesh that only salmon has. The clam chowder was very good, but honestly, we've had better. A cup of Cole slaw came with the meal that was fresh & had a great crunch, with a good balance of sweetness & savory. The fries were tasty & the meal came out piping hot. We really liked this place & I'm sure we'll return.

Yelp
Service was A1 - amazing! Ambiance was on point! I love how you are right on the water. Food was delicious. We got the clam chowder, fish, shrimp and chips. Fish and shrimp were cooked to perfection and so fresh. Clam chowder was tasty with yummy fresh clams and bits of bacon. YUM! My mouth is watering just writing about it & I'm writing this just right after eating here lol. Portion size is perfect! Also, I love the side of complimentary coleslaw. So refreshingly good. Why are you still reading? Run don't walk over there! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! (Even wrote a request to Triple D to visit here lol I hope he gets to visit and try their amazing food)

Yelp
SLOOOOOOOOOW!!!! We waited 50 minutes for an order of fish and chips and a combo basket!! No, the place was not that busy. There were 4 tables in the back with people waiting, two with people eating. If fried fish and French fries is all you do, it should not take anywhere near that long. People were standing around that had been waiting longer than us and visible ( and audibly) irritated. The food was pretty mediocre but edible ( probably because we're were starving when it finally came out) when we got it except the fries were cold, limp and just kinda frozen crinkle cut fries, no big deal. Portions were ok but probably not really worth the price or the wait. Clam strips were actually just basically clam crumbs no bigger than about an inch long and smaller from there. ( clam flavored breading) The two jumbo prawns were butterflied to about 1/4 inch thick which kinda defeats the purpose of having a jumbo prawns. Two nuggets of fried rock fish about two inches long ( basically the tilapia of the sea) The fried oysters were good though. Glad we tried, won't be back.

Yelp
Delicious food on a cute floating restaurant. I had prawns and chips. My wife had the clam chowder bread bowl. Both were very good. We'll return for more next time we are in Coos Bay. One thing I appreciated was how they removed the shrimp tails before breading and frying the shrimp (prawns). Service was quick, and the staff are friendly. You go inside and order at the counter, and then find a table. There's just a few seats inside. The rest are in an enclosed outdoor floating dock. We had dogs with us and got a table on the outdoor dock. They are dog friendly. It only took minutes before our food was brought to our table. The sign at the counter says everything is fresh and wild-caught. I believe it. Everything was great!

Yelp
I'm not one to order seafood through a delivery service. Too many things could go wrong. But we took a chance here. Reviews were high - even higher on Door Dash. And we wanted chowder. I didn't want to drive so it was worth the risk. We were not disappointed. Bread bowls and chowder were amazing. Thick chunky chowder. Bread was warm - soft where it was supposed to be and hard on the outside. Chowder was just really good tasting. Got the prawns to go with our meal and those too were excellent. Fat prawns. No tails. YES!! Panko breading. Genuinely good. Despite the online order and delivery, the food was a good temperature and didn't last long! We inhaled it! I'd definitely go back here.

Yelp
the food is great, the fish is fresh, it's locally owned, you get to eat on the water, and it's got a fun vibe, and on top of all that food usually comes out in like five minutes. the people who work here are always nice, and sometimes they'll let you spray pigeons with their squirt gun too. solid 10/10.

Yelp
Stopped here while driving through Coos Bay to satisfy our fish and chips craving. Nice, relaxed atmosphere right on the water and great food. We had fish and chips and salmon fish and chips, both great. The owner (Rob) was super friendly and checked on us multiple times. Highly recommend for a good relaxed meal.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way to the airport after a visit in Bandon. What a treat! The FRESHEST fish and BEST service. This is a small, quaint place where you can tell that they really care! I had one of three specials - the the fish and clams. Perfectly fried - no oily taste. The clams were so fresh and delicious!! It was a colder day and I asked for hot tea. They don't normally serve this but had just brewed tea for iced tea and accommodated my request. This is the real deal. I highly recommend.

Yelp
The perfectly fried (huge) prawns & fish & chips dinner combo was great. The service was really good. Hubby and I ate outside on the floating dock, it was pretty windy, but well worth it. We will be going back.

Kyle P.

Yelp
Take the "clam chowder" OFF YOUR MENU....PLEASE. Just waisted our money on that. Didn't eat it because it was a thick snotty tasteless slime...sorry just being truthful. The atmosphere was nice on the outside patio and we never tried any other items on the menu... with so many positive reviews something must be good

Yelp
While passing through Coos Bay we found this seafood gem! Not only was the owner welcoming. He had a great knowledge of his fresh fish! Come to find out, both grew up in the same town in California. My husband was hungry for fish and chips and usually this is something I can't enjoy because I have celiac disease and have no choice but to eat only gluten free. However, the owner surprise me that they are able to accommodate me by dusting my fish with Bob's Red Mill! Let me tell you this guy made my day... I've probably have not had fish and chips in 13 years, and it did not disappoint! This little hole in the wall was so sweet! The outside dining area was basically a floating barge, and since we live on the water at home, this was a real treat! Do not pass this up as you're passing through! I give it more stars if I could!!!

Yelp
What a find! Thanks to the ladies at the Coos Bay Welcome Center who suggested at my asking, to get clam chowder here. It's cute and a great novelty to the Coos Bay area, it is too bad, the owners are selling the restaurant. Secretly, I'm hoping the new owners will keep the place a restaurant and not change it. It's just too cute! A boat converted into a seafood restaurant, its such a cool idea, for this little fisherman's town. (I don't really know for sure if Coos Bay is a fisherman's town, I didn't actually see any one fishing, but the area feels like it could be, so I called it that). The clam chowder was perfect, served quickly, the back patio seating area was peaceful and calming, there wasn't too much action going on with the waves in the bay, so movement on the backend of the boat was minimal. The overall atmosphere, was enjoyable! And I went on a day where it wasn't very busy, which made the experience even easier to take in. I can just imagine what it would be like on a rainy day. Probably even more peaceful, with the pitter patter of the rain hitting the patio covering. The current owners were pleasant and patient and I found the clam chowder soup to be yummy and reasonably priced, especially since it's made fresh daily! It really was a pleasant afternoon, and experiencing this quaint novelty just made the day even better.

Yelp
best sourdough bread bowl I've had, and clam chowder. so good that my husband decided he wanted one to go after he just ate a combo fish n chips.

Yelp
Loved the food here. The owner clearly has a passion for his craft which ya love to see. This was the best clam chowder I've ever had. And definitely the best meal we had while visiting Oregon. The vibes? Immaculate. Fresh fish. Great environment. Wish I had one back home.

Yelp
Super cute seafood shanty in coos bay right in the water (actually in the water ) typical friend seafood offerings . The chowder was really good as was the fish and shrimp .

Yelp
Best service!!! The gentleman at the register is so kind and helpful. Amazing place to stop. Food is top notch. Highly recommend.

Yelp
GREAT QUALITY SEAFOOD AND CHOWDER DONE RIGHT Once you walk in you're greeted with a friendly "Hello! Welcome in." I was on a mission to find the best fish and chips in Coos Bay. After being disappointed a few times at local breweries I was finally eating AMAZINGLY good and fresh fish and chips at Fishermen's Seafood Market. The clam chowder was great and it's made fresh daily. The owner tells me the recipe is over 150yrs old! They keep it simple and let great fresh ingredients and the passion for what they do speak for them. Prepared to perfection, generous portions and made to order. Not premade or frozen. Eat here and you'll be more than satisfied. Fisherman's Seafood Market indeed has the best fish n chips in Coos Bay!

Yelp
This is a cute little restaurant at the boardwalk. They have a table and 2 booths inside and 1 table for 2 outside. Ordering process seemed easy. You order, they give you a number and wait to be called. We ordered 2 fish and chips and 2 bowls of clam chowder. Although only one table was occupied we opted to wait outside because it was just too beautiful a day to be indoor. When our number finally got called, my husband went in with another couple that got called as well. He was in there a lot longer than we expected it. It turned out that they handed our second order to the other couple who came after us. They casually told him they will have to cook another batch for him because they gave one of our orders to the other couple. No apologies, which is kind of annoying. In case you're wondering, it was not busy when we went either. Anyway, food wise the fish was fresh, nothing special, a little on the salty side. The highly anticipated clam chowder was disappointing, it had the he consistency of paste. It would have been good if it was not so thick. Was it worth the experience? Yes. Worth going back to? No.

Yelp
Hands done one of the worst seafood restaurants I have EVER been to!! The clam chowder was really a bacon chowder, we found two clams. The "fried clams", were maybe an inch long and were chewy as if they had been frozen. The prawns had been cooked to death and were also disappointing. However the thing that absolutely destroyed the experience was that we were charged for water, not bottled water....a freaking glass of water! I do not recommend wasting your money here, the prices are ridiculous for the horrible quality of food! I had to add a little more to my review; I honestly am so frustrated, Can extend an offer as an avid fisherman and chef to come help train your staff? You have people paying $100.00's for what can be better found at Long John Silver! I go clamming personally, pull those razors clams out of the sand myself and make a pretty damn good chowder, one that actually has clams! I'm just astonished at the ratings on Yelp....are you posting these reviews yourself? I

Kristine H.

Yelp
We ran across this place as we were driving through Coos Bay and saw their sign reading "Fish and Chips on the water". We pulled over right away because it was a beautiful day, and why not?:). We ate fried fish/shrimp & chips, Wow, the fish and shrimp were out of this world...just the right amount of batter and fried perfectly! Super fresh! They used fresh local rock fish and it was moist and oh so tasty! The shrimp were butterflied and also cooked to perfection. Everything tasted very fresh and it became obvious to us that they were using fresh oil... This is very much appreciated! All three of us agreed that it's some of the best fish/shrimp and chips we've ever had... Oh, and the fries are crinkle cut, which I love because they are crispy and great for holding sauces. I can't wait for our next visit to Coos Bay, so I can eat this again!

Yelp
Small, not what you'd think of as a seafood restaurant if you're from the city, but pretty normal if you come from a coastal town just about anywhere. We enjoyed it. Location: well, it is on the water in a floating house with no outdoor seating but there is some nearby. Beware of Coasties. Facility: Well, it has three tables inside, so that is better than none. We got there early so no problem and we had a great time. A lot to to-go orders here. Covid restrictions enforced and it was very clean considering location. Menu: enough to choose from no doubt, pretty standard Oregon coast food, not super healthy just good. They also had fresh fish to pick up. We had fish and chips and shrimp, DFF but not too greasy. Food: Well prepared and served like it should be, no fancy platting here. Price: It was not cheap, but it was fun and for sure someplace we may return to when in the area. Value: for sure it is a value if you consider the experience. We live in a tourist town so it is nice to escape and become a touron and explore.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Having lived on the southern East Coast, finding good seafood is always a challenge.
google avatar

Yelp
Best clam chowder by my standards ... Chunks of clams and not all potato! The fish and chips was delicious and the breading just perfect .. felt like panko instead of heavy batter . The coleslaw was very good too. We drove through town and saw their open sign.. didn't know what to expect . Just 2nd day open and looks like owner may be creating outdoor seating in the back. Wish I could have bought more chowder to take home but our road trip was another 3 days So had to control myself. It's take out food and I definitely recommend.

Cat A.

Yelp
We had fish & chips, and the bread bowl clam chowder. Both were amazing! The enclosed back patio was so cute and perfect because it was raining outside! I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in town! Awesome service as well!

Martha Y.

Yelp
Food was great as was the service. We will definitely be back! The owner was friendly and waited on us. Ate inside since it was a little chilly on the deck.

Kim T.

Yelp
Stopped here last winter on a cold, rainy day and had the best coastal lunch ever. Seafood was fresh and cooked to perfection. Owner was friendly. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Don't pass this gem by! Quality fish; Very good fish & chips. Quaint restaurant - can sit on the water deck or inside - great service! Highly recommend

Wayland R.

Yelp
I stop here anytime I come out here to Coos Bay, and I've been coming out here for more than a decade now. I always get my food to go and walk up here to the boardwalk and enjoy the view. It can be pretty cold up here on the boardwalk, so make sure you have your jacket candy.
google avatar

Lexi C.

Yelp
Kind and fast service! Only stopped in to try the clam chowder but no complaints here. The outside patio is cute and on a floating dock - can get a little rocky so don't recommend sitting here if you get seasick.
google avatar

Crystal N.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best fish and chips I've ever had. My husband agreed too. Crispy coating, I'm guessing Panko crusted, I much prefer this to the thicker beer batter style. Fries were crispy. Tarter and cocktail sauce were great. Fun experience eating on the floating dock dining area.
google avatar

Dustin T.

Yelp
As good as it gets with fish and chips with truly incredible chowder Very cool setup on the dock too

Margaret P.

Yelp
Stopped by on our way through heading back to Salem from Bandon. Best meal of our south coast trip! We ordered the combo plate: Butterflied fried local prawns, local oysters, local clams and local rockfish! This platter was served with perfectly cooked crinkle cut fries, coleslaw and really good tartar and cocktail sauce. Everything was fresh, light, crispy and moist! The chowder is made from scratch daily and was also delicious! The combo plate was large enough to split. The service was extremely friendly from the moment we walked in. They have a cozy little interior with a few tables and a great floating seating area with a lot of tables. Do yourself a favor- stop by before it's too late!
google avatar

Wendy K.

Yelp
Super friendly and helpful staff. Loved the presentation of the fresh fish and shrimp. Attentive service. Great atmosphere. And the fish and chips were amazing as promised.

Kenna M.

Yelp
Best fish and chips I've ever had. Coleslaw is sweet, fresh, and homemade--as is the chowder. Right on the dock. Good vibes

Yelp
How can I talk highly enough of this place? Long road trip from Boise to Redwoods, four college students. We pulled over on a whim because we got hungry and saw the sign. The minute we walked in, friendly service. The woman behind the counter was very helpful in placing our order. Next, we sat ourselves on the enclosed area. Nice and warm, though it was chilly that day, but bring a light sweater! We were the only people there since it was the first day they'd been open for the season. The food came out quickly. I cannot express how much you will regret it if you don't come here. I ordered the clam chowder, rockfish, oysters, and chips. My friends ordered the halibut and chips. Literally (not figuratively literally but LITERALLY literally) the best fish and chips I've ever had. I didn't even really remember what drink I got or how I felt about the chowder (a little thick for my taste, if I recall correctly) because I was busy having the best. Fish and chips. I've ever had. I'm from the PNW so I've had my fair share. The breading was perfect, the fish was fresh and cut to ideal sizes, and the meal wasn't too greasy, which are typically my qualms with fish and chips. The fish didn't fall apart in the tartar sauce (which, by the way, was perfectly seasoned). The coleslaw was TO DIE FOR. The fries were exactly the right amount of crispy, salty, and golden-brown. Table was well-stocked with condiments. On the way out, we were given another friendly goodbye and a request to review on Yelp, thanks for coming in. We've got you, lady. Can't wait to come back!

Marylea S.

Yelp
We arrived and the owner showed us the wild caught and fresh options. I'm celiac and he prepared the fish perfectly for me. Both my husband and I enjoyed the meal and the outdoor dining on the water was an added experience. We Definitely will be going back. An added bonus for my husband? He's allergic to fish and there were other options for him.
google avatar

Stewart T.

Yelp
Excellent fish and chips. Clam chowder was a little thick for me, but still good. Service was very good, ate in their patio area on the water. Its wind protected.
google avatar

Jordann C.

Yelp
Went here for the first time yesterday. Everyone was extremely nice and welcoming. Super cute outside dining, right on the water. Unfortunately that is the last good experience I had. I got the half fish half fried clams and a cup of chowder. The chowder has bacon in it(which I should have asked but was not listed on the menu) and was very gummy and mostly tasted of bacon. The fish was cut into nuggets and fried and was okay. The clams were flavorless and over cooked. The French fries were frozen crinkle cut. All of it gave me a very bad upset stomach with stomach pains all night. Good coleslaw slaw though.
google avatar

Mona V.

Yelp
Fresh and previously frozen fish selections have yet to disappoint and I have came here several times :))
google avatar

Stefanie C.

Yelp
I had the rock fish and chips and my husband had the halibut fish and chips. We shared a bowl of the clam chowder. We both really enjoyed our food. Even the fries were salted just right. They both had panko breading which was really a nice change from tempera. The 'patio' was warm even on a windy day. Quite nice. We will be back.

JonTukaGam3 H.

Yelp
If you want real fresh fish, seafood, and fresh clam chowder made daily... this is the place to go. Don't settle for the frozen fish and seafood. This is the place to go, don't miss it. One of the hidden GEMS in coos bay. Get your "FISH ON" right here.
google avatar

Erin E.

Yelp
Such a good hole-in-the-wall find. We were driving up the coast and stumbled upon this gem. I thought it was only a fish market but glad my husband pointed out the sign for fish & chips. We ordered a daily special basket and were not disappointed. It was 1/2 cod and 1/2 prawns. I wish we had ordered 20 of them. So good. It came with fries and coleslaw. Such a good surprise. Also, the gentleman at the front is so sweet. Thanks for a delicious meal.

Eric S.

Yelp
The best fried fish I've ever had. Fresh and crisp. Definitely recommend. That's all I really have to say but Yelp isn't letting me post anything less than 85 words so....

Yelp
No frills and freshest of the fresh. Lacking pretense and abundant in authenticity, this is a must stop for seafood on the coast. Kind staff, simple menu, delicious food. The oysters are to die for.

Jonathan W.

Yelp
AMAZING place with delicious, crave-worthy fresh seafood and fantastic, friendly service that makes you feel right at home. My wife and I really enjoyed the unique, boat setting (you can actually eat on the water). Fantastic experience. Go here!
