Fitzgerald’s Cocktail Bar Opens With Sporty Vibes and Shared Plates Next to 1789 in Georgetown | Eater DC

"Debuting next door to 1789 on Saturday, June 26, the two-level Fitzgerald’s (1232 36th Street NW) is a new sibling cocktail bar from Clyde’s Restaurant Group that focuses on classic drinks, rare Japanese whisky pours, and elegant drinking snacks served in a preppy, tweed-filled setting. The space underwent a 19-month renovation that breathes new life into the room where art-deco nightclub F. Scott’s opened in the 1960s, and the 70-seat makeover covers tired grey walls in a handsome dark blue, dresses leather banquettes with tweed pillows, and lines a mahogany bar with 12 mix-and-match stools upholstered in preppy plaids and hunting-lodge velvet; designer Pam Farrell kept pigskin-brown banquettes and framed ephemera like old-timey football helmets and a painting of Sammy Baugh to invoke an old Georgetown feel. Chef Kyoo Eom — the new 1789 chef who recently received a winning Washington Post review — designed a playful menu that ranges from herbed truffle fries, tempura calamari with Grand Marnier aioli, Korean chicken wings, and a vibrant tuna tataki on a glassy turquoise plate to a plump Peking duck burger made of foie gras, wagyu beef fat, and duck with caramelized onions and a fried egg on a sweet potato bun; a shareable “for the table” section leads into mains such as ricotta gnocchi, soy-honey glazed halibut, and grilled wagyu short ribs. Pastry chef Erin Garcia contributes a chocolate pot de crème in a glass coupe dotted with black sesame ganache, a fruit Charlotte, and assorted ice creams and sorbets. Longtime 1789 bar director and general manager Brian Zipin is running the drinks program, offering a summery strawberry-infused pisco sour, a brown butter–washed Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned, barrel-aged Sazerac and Hemingway daiquiri classics, an in-vogue espresso martini, and generous 1.5-ounce pours of Japanese whiskies from 12-year Yamazaki to Ohishi rice whisky aged in brandy casks." - Tierney Plumb

A bit of a mixed bag. Love the dimly lit, but warm and cozy atmosphere with the spacious corner booths. Liked the food overall though nothing spectacular. Definitely did not like the service which entailed a waitress that clearly had better things to do than wait on customers, and we felt that vibe from the beginning. We sampled a few cocktails and they were the best part of the mail, demonstrating why they consider themselves a bar-centric restaurant. The Blood & Sand was a bit sweet but otherwise quite good. They make a great Manhattan as well. As for the food, all pretty solid but just nothing to memorable. The burger is solid, the chicken sandwich could have used something to differentiate itself a bit, and the short rib was tender if not particularly bursting with flavor. The Korean chicken wings were delicious, as were their duck fat fries.

Google
Fitzgerald’s has incredible service. From the moment you enter until the time you leave, you’re treated with great hospitality. The food is also quite good & reasonably priced. The tuna tartar is a personal favorite of mine. The decor is very cozy, & they also have two mocktail options worth checking out.

Google
Simply magnificent. We were visiting from Canada and were elated to find Best Lobster Rolls in town; here. We were welcomed by the pleasant staff and the gastronomic options really elevated the entire experience. Thank you for your hospitality and service; we can't wait to come back!

Google
Was here with a couple of friends for drinks and dinner. Service was great. The cocktails were good, too. I had the happy hour Manhattan ($10). We shared some appetizers. The truffle fries is a must. I also enjoyed the steak tartare. Overall, a great time.

Google
Had a great experience here for restaurant week. Food was delicious and atmosphere was cozy; loved the wagyu tartare and tuna crudo. Would return! Our reservation was not ready when we arrived and we had to wait 30+ minutes, but we got our cocktails on the house to compensate.

Google
This was a really cool sport themed spot! Food was fantastic. It was quiet and very cozy. It is right next to 1789. The server allowed me to order an item off that menu which I really appreciated. Will definitely return.

Google
The food was phenomenal!!!! Best rotisserie chicken I've ever had!! The staff was friendly and made it a great evening for all of us. Sarah made us feel right at home.

Yelp
We stopped by Fitzgerald's for drinks before our dinner reservation during happy hour on a Thursday. The ambiance was elegant, and since the place was nearly empty, we had the bar to ourselves, which was great. I ordered the Blood Orange & Lavender Margarita. At first, I hesitated, thinking it might be too citrusy or sweet, but it turned out to be neither. The cocktail was incredibly refreshing with just the right hint of lavender. I definitely recommend it!

Yelp
We went here on a date night during DC restaurant week. The staff was incredible, especially our bartender. We sat at the bar for a drink before we sat for dinner. She went out of her way to make our special occasion even more special. The food was really good. We probably didn't need to order the brussels sprouts on top of the prefix menu, but we were worried the portions wouldn't be enough. We were so wrong! The portion sizes were excellent. We ended up taking some food home. My complaint is how close together all of the tables are. We heard the entire conversation conversation other people next to us and it was not a topic we cared to hear about, but we didn't really have a choice due to how close the tables were. Definitely suggest going during happy hour they have a number of classic cocktails, a few glasses of wine for $10. The draft beer is also five dollars happy hour.

Yelp
The service here was absolutely fantastic. Our food and drinks were also delicious. Every course from the wagyu tartare to the key lime cremeux was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. Portions are fair as well, great all around food experience, but the staff here really make Fitzgerald's stand out. This space has great, intimate ambiance and would be perfect for a date night. The bar by the entrance is gorgeous and the drinks are well-made, not too sweet and well-crafted.

Yelp
Came here for dinner with a friend and vibes couldn't be beat. Quiet and dark would make it great for a dark night, but the sporty vintage Ralph Lauren style decor and few large tables would make for a great friends cocktail hour. It was surprisingly empty for a Friday night, perhaps because it's off the beaten path of typical Georgetown. Huge shoutout to the hostess, who was so friendly and nice, and extremely accommodating when we needed to shift our reservation. Our server was fine... she seemed carry an air of confusion the entire meal, but our food came out perfectly so hard to really complain. And the food was delicious. The appetizers had nice portion sizes, and the crudo and grilled octopus were delicious. While the peach upside down cake caught our eye originally, the chocolate dessert ended up being the winner of the bunch, with the peach cake being just okay. A great espresso martini to end the night (although, despite being on the menu online, it wasn't on the menu in the restaurant, but they were still happy to oblige). Overall, would recommend! If only it were more conveniently located.

Yelp
I just had an AMAZING experience at Fitzgerald's. We went for Restaurant Week because the menu really caught my eye. Did not disappoint!! Our waitress was so personable, checked on us the right amount, and the courses were timed perfectly. We are doing dry January but the cocktails around us looked amazing. A run down: Complimentary bread and butter: this is where I knew we were in for a good time. The bread was warm, soft, and salty and the butter was the right temp. I am a sucker for a good bread and butter sitch, so this was a great start Tuna crudo: probably my favorite of the night. So fresh, bursting with flavor, a mix of textures. Beautifully done. Waygu beef tartare: I loved the flavor on this and it was also really fresh. The chips that came with it added a salty crunch, but they weren't super sturdy. My fiancé thought the tartare could have had more flavor, but I really enjoyed it. Branzino bouillabaisse: I'm allergic but my fiancé said the branzino was cooked so perfectly. The tiger prawn was huge, and he said the flavors were really great. Waygu short rib: melted in my mouth!!! Really flavorful and perfectly cooked. The accompaniments really added something too. Pomme rösti: the crunch with the harissa aioli was chef's kiss. My only wish is that each piece was smaller so they'd be crispier but to each their own! Warm fudge brownie: nothing to really write home about but very solid! Key lime crémeux: SO crisp and fresh!!! A really great way to end the meal The atmosphere was sooo cozy and the decor was classy while still being simple. Every table was taken, but it wasn't too loud. A wide array of ages. Will definitely come back! A perfect restaurant week choice!

Yelp
This is a great area for a nice date night. The vibe is very intimate and clean. The bartenders will also make you a drink just the way you like it or you can try some specialty cocktails. They also have a whiskey flight option that is popular!
google avatar

Lizzy O.

Yelp
I like the vibes here. I feel like this is where rich grandpas talk about golf and drink whiskey on a Sunday afternoon. That being said I am neither a rich grandpa nor do I drink whiskey. Anyways, we got the truffle fries, beef tartare, chicken wings, and chocolate donut for dessert. Loved every dish and it's details.

Yelp
I just discovered this spot recently after having lived in the area for almost 10 years. I went with a friend for happy hour and was really delighted by the experience. First, we were able to make a reservation for a table before hand- which took the pressure off navigating the "happy hour rush" on a week night. The hostess was friendly and warm, as was our waitress. The vibe inside was really great -- low lighting but not too dark. I love the artwork on the walls and the "tucked away" feeling it provided once you head to the back. While we only ordered a few drinks and fries -- take note: THE FRIES WERE THE ABSOLUTE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. Insanely crispy, and seasoned to perfection. If you get nothing else? Get the fries! Will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
After dining at 1789 Restaurant, my wife and I sat at Fitzgerald's bar and ordered the blood orange margarita and their take on a negroni. The bartender was personable and very knowledgeable. It made for the perfect end of our date night!

Yelp
Overall I liked the atmosphere of this restaurant but the food and cocktails didn't particularly stand out to me even though everything was decent. I enjoyed the brown butter old fashioned and the duck burger. The calamari and steak tartare were ok. I would come here mostly for the vibe.

Yelp
This is not a true Irish Pub. There is no draft beers, Guinness or harp or anything on tap. We did not go there to eat, just wanted an Irish pub and was very disappointed. Struggled to find something to drink and was so dead we just had one and were gone. The five star review must have something to do with food, not sure but just because it has an Irish name, do not be fooled, in my opinion this is NOT an Irish pub.

Yelp
I consider myself a very harsh critic. This place nails it! Waitstaff, excellent. Lightning and ambiance, excellent. Cocktails, excellent and worth the money. Live music is fun and not overbearing.

Yelp
I have to say that this was one of the best "restaurant week" meals I have had - in any city. Great food at a great price ($40 for three courses). Factor in the happy hour $10 cocktails and it was an incredible experience at a very good price. My only quibble was that they refused to serve my happy hour Old Fashioned on a big rock even though I offered to pay an up charge for it. Other than that the food, ambiance, and service were all great!

Dee H.

Yelp
The crowd was immaculate. The best part of the night was the smooth-ness of the drinks made by arguably the greatest bartender.

Yelp
As soon as I stepped through the doors, I was greeted and promptly seated. First impression of the inside was that it's elegant but also cozy. Ordered the fries and some drinks. I can't remember all the drink names off the top of my head, but I can say the lavender drink was good. They also have some happy hour drinks, so that's the perfect time to go. Aside from the drinks, the fries were delicious! Extra crispy and flavorful. What my bf and I liked the most was the server and how knowledgeable he was about the drinks. Definitely a place to visit again when I'm in DC.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely. This place is a sort of upscaled preppy sports place - think Brooks Brothers meets a pub, or something like that. It's really quite lovely, and feels very elegant. The drinks here are superb. The cocktail menu is extensive, but there's also a really nice list of Japanese whiskies on offer, which I really appreciated. All cocktails I tried were quite pleasant and well-made. I could see going here often, particularly if I lived in the area.

Yelp
Excellent happy hour on a SATURDAY...my wife and I enjoyed time together on our anniversary...found this little spot and had one of the best nights of our lives together...we started at the bar and ended the night with a dinner in the upstairs area...great atmosphere and ambiance...the staff was absolutely great from top to bottom and helpful selecting drinks, food, and also pairings overall...ask for Simón at the bar and prepare yourselves for an experience, Brian is the manager and was great as well (but busy)...GREAT TIMES...thankful for the celebration and evening...Janae was the best and helpful throughout and the absolutely best server...ask for her and Simón...you won't be disappointed...

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants in Georgetown. They have a very good menu and the ambiance is perfect for dinner or just a night out with friends for cocktails and fun. Janae our server is the BEST. She's very attentive, nice and professional. She goes out of her way for what customers need for a pleasant dining experience. We appreciate your service. See you all soon. Dane was also such a professional staff member.

Yelp
I loved the decor of Fitzgerald's. It's definitely a sports-themed spot, but with a modern twist and clean liners. A couple of tables appeared to be on dates and that was so refreshing to see dresses and blazers being worn. This would be a great date night or post dinner cocktail spot. Speaking of cocktails, I really enjoyed the blood Orange margarita and the Hemingway daiquiri. My boyfriend marveled at the large selection of Japanese whiskeys on the menu and partook in a few new ones. The Korean fried chicken was a must try since I'd read about it in an article for new hot spots in DC. Goodness, they were good! Crunchy, well seasoned, and a great balance of salty, sweet, and spicy. The Pekíng duck burger was exceptionally well prepared. The patty was both Juicy and tender. The addition of the fried egg added just the right amount of umami. The grilled wagyu short rib was very good.

Yelp
This place is a total vibe. I was hoping for a loungey type place where'd I'd be able to hear my date with ease and that's what I got. The veal was to die for. Lighting was perfect. Attentive staff with great suggestions. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Terry M.

Yelp
This place is 5 star for drink options, dessert, decor, and customer service. The first time I went, I felt like I was in a 1950s sports club for maybe an alumni of a prestigious Ivy League. I enjoyed the classy ambiance, the music, the drinks and dessert we're outstanding. It was warm and broody and everything I want when I'm sipping scotch. This latest visit was for date night. There's not too many places that have nice dress codes anymore so it was such a treat to see other patrons dressed nicely. There were plenty of tables around yet we were seated in between couples, which is annoying considering the number of cases DC experiences each day is growing. The tables are beautiful and are weighed down by beautiful iron, sturdy. No wobbling here. The Korean wings were sensational. Great crunch and flavor. The gnocchi was good but could have used more snow peas. The tenderloin was a little gamey but the sauce was excellent. Half of an extra serving of spinach and purée would have been appreciated for the price point. The cocktails were again amazing and the service good. My only real complaint was the music. The first visit it was nice lounge background music. Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughn... listening to TLC's "creep" really took me out of the mood . Felt like I was in an Outback Steakhouse. Other than that, hopefully they continue to succeed. It's a nice place.

Yelp
This gem of a neighborhood restaurant has INCREDIBLE service. These folks make you feel like family. They are warm, helpful, consistently welcoming. I hope this place becomes another staple. Decor is great too. Cozy, dark, good accoustics. Would go back anytime
google avatar

Yelp
Georgetown needs ten more places like this. I'm hesitant to write this review because I don't want to get crowded out! A little gem.

Yelp
The drinks, fries and wings were on point. Ivan at the bar is the best- keeps things fun and entertaining. Helpful tip - ask for aioli with your fries. It takes them to the next level.

Yelp
Great cocktails and and fantastic atmosphere! Very relaxing place to sit and sip. Will definitely return.

Vanessa W.

Yelp
I absolutely loved the vibe in the place! Great people and the best 2023 New Years Eve Party!

Yelp
Horrible. Our server was outstanding! However, the manager yelled at her in the middle of the restaurant for "being too social"? What kind of management is that?? Never coming back, can't support this establishment.

Wenqing Z.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Georgetown, drink is very good from cocktail Japanese whiskey. Food is nice too but with limited options.
