The Best Restaurants in Newark, New Jersey | Eater NY

"While Italian food is not unusual for Newark, it’s not as common in the Iberian/South American haven that is the Ironbound. But in this striking corner space, Kreshnik Berisha, a Rutgers-Newark graduate and resident, along with his business partner, hospitality professional David Khabuliani, serves a classic Italian menu. Expect seafood risotto and chicken marsala, and a cocktail list with obvious touches of neighborhood influence, like the Jersey Devil, a blend of cachaca, chile, lime, Campari, and agave. Berisha and Khabuliani also operate two other businesses in Newark: Sihana Café and most recently, Sihana Bistro; the menu at the latter is adapted from Khabuliani’s native Georgia, bringing khachapuri to Newark." - Hank Zona

This is one of the best restaurants we been to! We felt stupid for sounding like we didn't eat for a long time because we kept complementing the food and drinks and the restaurant itself. It has those European vibes. The menu is select and they definitely specialize in what they offer. Our first time trying the octopus and it was delicious. They made their own version of Porn Star drink with tequila and it was much better than the original. We got like 5! For such good dishes they came out quick and they were so attentive. We felt nice and relaxed and we are already trying to find another opportunity to go there soon. Did I mention they got Pavlova?and that Affogato....! Brunch will probably will be interesting there... Might try that!

Chose this place based on the menu one Sunday when a friend and I decided to meet last minute, and I'm very happy that I did. The inside is nice and bright & very cozy. The staff are wonderfully attentive and pleasant. The Lemon curd pancakes were scrumptious- even my 10-months-old daughter loved them. The Challah bread French Toast was delicious. Both dishes are shareable, and I'll do that next time. I will definitely be back! Of course the parking is precarious because of the restaurant's location but it's worth it.

Excellent time here with Friends! The Servers were friendly and made great suggestions. Drinks and Food were Great and prices were reasonable in my opinion. Parking is a little tricky, but the ambiance in the Restaurant is wonderful. Make sure you try out their Sister Restaurants as well!

Five Corners in the Ironbound section of Newark delivers a polished, satisfying dining experience. The Fritto Misto arrived crisp and golden, with a clean, light batter that let the seafood shine. The Oyster Mushroom Tagliatelle was solid— house-made pasta coated in a rich, earthy sauce that balanced creaminess with the depth of the mushrooms. The Seafood Risotto was equally well executed, featuring tender shellfish and perfectly cooked rice, infused with a delicate seafood and tomato based stock. Service was warm/attentive, and the atmosphere struck a balance between upscale and comfortable. Altogether, a thoughtful and well-composed meal that makes a strong case for a return visit.

Came here for a cute dinner date. Reservations were made for 7pm on a Thursday and we were seated right away. This restaurant is cute and chic. The restaurant is located in a busy area with very limited parking. The food was pretty tasty. My favorite dish was the Arancini which is in the appetizer section. The service was great and everyone was friendly.

Google
Best service and pasta I’ve ever had! Issac(server) and Jose(bartender) were extremely attentive and friendly! Food was so good and the service provided made us feel very welcomed. We are from Michigan and if we could return more often we would!! Highly recommend!

Google
5 Corners genuinely surprised me. The pasta and chicken dishes that we ate were some of the best that we’ve had. You can tell that they genuinely care about the food they are serving. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were a group of five and we paid less than $150 (which I thought was a steal for such a nice fine dining establishment). The only down side is trying to find street parking, but I promise you that it is well worth it. This will definitely be our go to pasta spot from now on. Thank you!

Google
12/10 🔥 best muscles I’ve had by far !! The food is well seasoned and well presented. The ambience is great..wish I took a pic when I looked in, very aesthetically pleasing. Would come back…love love the pasta choices

Yelp
I mean...WOW So it's Newark Restaurant Week... I'm not big on Italian food and I have a high cream/dairy intolerance but I couldn't stop eating the Abruzzo con Asparagi(which my friend ordered, so I spent our lunch reaching over to her plate). Finished off with a Tiramisu. I mean wow. Again.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by some business associates while traveling in NJ for business. I had a flight to catch at 8pm so we stopped in at 530pm for an early dinner. We were seated immediately in a cozy booth. The restaurant is lovely inside with chic textured tile walls, a swanky bar, and classy tablescapes. The menu is on the smaller side, but filled with all the best sounding options. Warm focaccia was delivered to our table with fresh olives, olive oil and balsamic. It was super delicious! We then shared the seared scallop appetizer which was also phenomenal - pro tip: save your bread to dip in the divine sauce that comes with the scallops! For the main I ordered the Carbonara which had a lovely presentation with the soft yolk on top. It wasn't the best carbonara I've had, but it was tasty all the same. Service was excellent.

Yelp
Cool new restaurant in Newark! The place is very modern and nicely decorated. They have cool and yummy cocktails. I love the plates that they use to serve the food. The food was kind of a miss for me. The bread was too dense. The pasta was too chewy and the flavor didn't mesh well together.

Yelp
My dining experience at Five Corners Restaurant was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment I walked in, Nicholas, the amazing and cute server/bartender, made me feel right at home. His friendly demeanor and attentive service truly enhanced the evening. I started with the panzanella salad, which was a delightful mix of fresh, vibrant flavors that left me wanting more. The highlight of the meal, however, was the chicken Milanese - hands down the best I've ever had. Perfectly breaded and cooked to perfection, it was a dish to remember. The cocktails at Five Corners were incredible, each crafted with care and bursting with flavor. Whether you're a local or just passing through Newark, this spot is a must-visit. I can't wait to return and enjoy more of their delicious offerings and exceptional service. Thank you, Nicholas, for making my last day in Jersey so special!

Yelp
I always like to dine somewhere nice before a show or concert. With stellar reviews and photos, this was a no brainer. The interior is modern chic. The colors were eye-pleasing and I loved all the natural light. We were greeted warmly. Our waiter was extremely attentive throughout our entire meal here. Service was a 10/10. Here is what we ordered: - Ginger & Hibiscus Sour (Mocktail) - Pear & Prosciutto Salad (App) - Grilled Salmon & Vegetables - Spaghetti Fruitti Di Mare - Panna Cotta w/Berries (Free w/Yelp Checkin) Every dish was delish and perfectly seasoned. I appreciate the portions too. Our waiter bought over a silver tray of complimentary Limoncello served in beautiful crystal shot glasses with our checks. It felt so fancy. Lol. I had this for the first time on my Italy trip this past May. It's served icy cold, refreshing with a lemony taste. Nice way to end the meal as it aids in digestion. Parking is a bit tricky. Just make sure you give yourself enough time.

Yelp
We came in for a quick lunch before our flight back home. The service was great. The food was so delicious & fresh. When I say fresh, it was hot right off out kitchen. Everything was cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend. My husband found this place from a tik tok video.

Yelp
I met up with a friend at five corners restaurant to catch up and it was conveniently in Ironbound area of Newark. Parking was not too difficult as I was able to catch a free spot right next to the restaurant. I'm glad we went during the day during lunchtime, because the restaurant was not busy at all when we walked in. We were greeted by a young man who was like the Jack of all trades. Nicolas was our server, the host and the bartender. Nicolas was friendly and helpful when we couldn't decide on beverages. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with wonderful neutral tones, green plants, plenty of natural lighting and the music was also on point. We felt very comfortable there and could sit and people watch if we had no where to go. We were the only ones in the restaurant for the majority of our lunch, so we are glad that it didn't take a long time for the bread (no olives) to come out, and the rest of our food came out in good time. The food was good not amazing. We did enjoy most of what we ordered. We ordered the salmon tartare and it did not come with anything, no crackers, bread or chips, which we thought that was different so we requested bread with it. What we didn't like was we noticed that the avocado that came with the salmon tartare was Brown/dark olive, which we expected to be bright green as fresh avocados are green. I didn't care for the salmon tartare especially since it didn't look appealing. We ordered the Chicken Marsala and the Chicken Milanese and both were good. The chicken Marsala came with mashed potatoes and was better than the chicken Milanese. Since I checked in on Yelp, we were able to taste one of their desserts! We chose the tiramisu... and it was okay. We probably should have tried something different. Hopefully next time. We also ordered two of the spritzers, I had the blueberry one and it was refreshing... but I couldn't pick up on the blueberry flavor. Overall it was a good experience, Would I come back? Yes, I would probably come back for dinner to try a different dish.

Yelp
Came for dinner recently with the team. The restaurant was quite small and empty which was perfect for our weeknight work dinner. The place had good food, good portions, good drinks. If you order the arancini be warned it is the size of a baseball. Imagine our surprise when we ordered 2 orders which came with 6 large baseball sized arancini's for the table. Safe to say we were extremely full that night! This place is cute for a date night or dinner.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch after seeing all of the positive reviews and was not disappointed! The frito misto had the perfect crunch and I am obsessed with the sauce of the mussels. The entrees came out after a good break in between the appetizers, didnt feel rushed at all. The espresso martini wasn't too bitter and the house made lemonade the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Happy we chose to stop while visiting from out of town. If you do order an uber use the address on the website because uber has somewhere else listed if you request by name.

Yelp
As a lifelong native of the Ironbound section of Newark, I can attest that we have been missing a true Italian restaurant here, and this place did not disappoint! It is a very chic, hip place and so different from what we already have in the area. The service is also spot on and the waiter is extremely attentive. Now on to the important stuff, the food! The first thing they brought out for us was the bread and olives. Bread was warm and we definitely dipped it in the olive oil /balsamic vinegar mixture they poured right in front of us. Great way to start off indeed. Three different olives accompanied this intro before our appetizer arrived and my favorite was the red olives. The arancini was to die for! Once you open up this risotto ball its like an explosion of cheese in your mouth. The creamy walnut sauce was great as well. Our mains were the spicy vodka cavatelli and spaghetti bolognese, and I was not able to pick a favorite! The spicy cavatelli was unlike any cavatelli I've had, and extremely flavorful. Pastas are definitely homemade without a doubt. The bolognese, although usually considered boring, was anything but that. Although they are not serving alcohol until December of this year, they do offer mocktails and I thoroughly enjoyed my cucumber drink. Crisp and refreshing. Last but not least we ordered the chocolate walnut brownie with vanilla ice cream and boy it was the perfect ending to a great dinner. I think this dessert hit every note... sweet, warm, cold, crunchy and tart (from the raspberries). Next time I'll try their Panna cotta as it's also highly recommended.

Yelp
I came here for dinner on a Sunday night. It was pretty empty inside with 2 other people sitting at the bar. While we were dining, 2 other people came to dine in. I ordered the aviation cocktail, which I enjoyed. I also ordered the arancini and the porcini mushroom tagliatelle. They served us some bread and assorted olives while we waiting for our food. The bread was nice and soft and tasted even yummier when dipped in the olive oil/balsamic mix. I was not a fan of the arancini AT ALL! The cheese in the middle was an overkill and actually made me very nauseous. I did like the walnut sauce that it sat on top of. The tagliatelle with black truffle was pretty good. I really enjoyed the flavors of the porcini mushrooms and would order it again.

Shira E.

Yelp
Food was fresh and delicious! We had the burrata salad, lamb chops, carbonara, chicken piccata, and skirt steak. Would reorder everything but the chicken again. It wasn't lemony enough for my liking. Tiramisu was excellent. Service was good. Attentive, but not overbearing. Ambience was nice, but it was a Sunday so it was empty...I could see it being loud when busy. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Adorably small and delicious. Will need reservation's. Cute Italian joint ran by a small team of 3 who are on top of things. Ordered the chicken vodka with no chicken and you can tell this was not BOXED NOODLES. Ha. The pasta was fresh and homemade. The sauce was rich and flavorful. Portions size was grande. I'm glad we skipped appetizers. The warm bread and olives was the right amount of food before the main. I was very content with everything. I'll definitely be back to try the desserts and other menu items. Highly recommend 10/10.

Yelp
Edit: Huge Compliments to the Management. They reached out to me with sincere apologies. That pumped up their customer service from a 9 to a 15. That is very rare to get follow up so soon after a review, if ever!!! They took ownership and were above and beyond sincere in their apologies. I assured them I understood that sometimes mistakes happen in the kitchen...(Lord knows I've ruined my share of appetizers in my time). I will definitely be back for that pasta. OMG THAT PASTA WAS AMAZING!!! I ordered three items. Spicy Vodka Cavatelli : OUTSTANDING Calamari: burned beyond recognition Tiramisu: was dusted with 14 year old, stale, dusty chocolate powder. Their customer service was stellar, and I was EXTREMELY impressed with the pasta. The flavor was absolutely amazing. Like, holy crap!!! This is frigging AMAZINGLY delicious. Then I opened the calamari... it was devastating. The calamari wasn't abused. It was tortured. I took a bite, anyway, for the adventure. I wish I hadn't. It was the Poseidon Adventure of calamari. But, that pasta was on point. OMG!!! That pasta saved my dinner. I'd give the pasta 7 stars and their customer service 9. But that calamari was so burned, and the chocolate powder on the tiramisu was so stale, it just killed this review. I'd definitely order that pasta, AGAIN, though!!!

Yelp
My partner and I had the best dining experience at Five Corners Ristorante. The service is top notch, the food was sublime and our cocktails were on point. The ambiance is simply fabulous, there's literally no other restaurant in the area that looks like this one. I love that the playlist was inviting and befitting for the feel of the establishment. We ordered the Arancini as a starter and we both ordered pastas: Porcini mushrooms tagliatelle and scallop tagliatelle. The risotto balls were fried to perfection and the cheese pull was insane! Our pastas were also delicious. The portions were pretty big, and we were kind of full from the warm focaccia. So we just took the rest of it to go! Lastly, the owner suggested that we try one of the desserts. We obliged and ordered the tiramisu. It was rich and flavorful! My partner and I finished it within two minutes. It was THAT GOOD! Huge thank you to the owner, Gabe, for providing a standout dining experience and curating a vibe. We will absolutely be back, soon!

Yelp
Oh baby, welcome to Newark! This restaurant is fabulous I must say. For one, the attention to detail is off the hook. The restaurant sits between, literally 5 corners . Even the bar was in the shape of a corner. The ambiance here isn't like most restaurants in the ironbound area but to me, that's a great thing. This is what Newark needs and I'm so happy it's here. Okay, so now on to the food. One word, delicious! My partner and I started with the mozzarella rice balls which were great in flavor. Might I add the walnut sauce wasn't needed but I can understand why they would add for the nuttiness of the dish. We opted for pastas as our main dishes, which were amazing. The scallop tagliatelle was soooo flavorful omg. The mushroom pasta was great but not as flavorful; it needed more truffle. However, still tasty. The cocktails were great as well! Definitely get one or two, or three ahaha. The espresso martini you can't go wrong with. We ended the night with their decadent tiramisu. It was such a sweet end to the pleasant experience we had here. Shout out the owner Gabe who is so pleasant and hospitable. I know this restaurant is going to go far just by how warm and charming he is. Hats off to another great restaurant in the city of Newark.

Matt W.

Yelp
Very impressive especially for the area. Modern look, excellent food: the octopus & scallops were fresh and had a charbroiled taste. Owner was friendly and conscientious. Go during daylight and allow time for parking.

Yelp
Superior Italian gourmet dining with fresh ingredients, upscale ambiance, and courteous service. The arancini and salmon tartare were impeccably plated. The chicken pesto pasta and marsala dishes were divine. The drinks were expertly crafted with locally sourced spirits from the All Points West Distillery in Newark.
google avatar

Yelp
A little gem in ironbound that's bringing something different in a delicious way. Great food in a small but welcoming place. Great service.. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Needed a place to eat close to the Newark Museum. We were in the mood for Italian. We loved the picture and the reviews, so we decided to stop by in hopes that we could be seated. The ambiance pictures do not lie. The place is comfy and simplistically decorated. We did not have a reservation, and the restaurant was at capacity, but the host found a way to accommodate us. We ordered drinks at the bar, and were seated before our drinks were ready. I LOVE a small and simple menu. 5 corners offers Italian staples and delivered!!! The food was delicious and the service was attentive without being overbearing. When in Newark, 5 Corners is a must visit. We will be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
I would give that restaurant a 5 stars for service , decor , ambiance and drinks And 4 stars for the food Went there on a Wednesday night the place was pretty empty ( I hope they can get their clientele up so they don't have to shut down because it's really nice to have nice restaurants closed by ) The place is immaculate clear fresh minimalist decor but still chic The service deserved a 10/10 the staff was professional , well dressed , friendly but not over friendly and not overbearing The drink was nice and well made try the blueberry lemon drop The food was clean fresh , you can taste that they used fresh ingredients and everything is homemade I had the scallops ( cook to perfection my only complaint was the tarragon taste of the sauce overpowered the scallops ) Then I had the ravioli who where amazing the sauce was to die for I highly recommend that little corner of heaven in the middle of Newark / I am looking forward to trying their brunch menu I was told it's perfect

Chris G.

Yelp
Tried the burrata, carbonara, and pappardalle truffle pasta. Burrata was excellent. Pappardalle was good. Service was excellent. Ambiance was amazing. Carbonara uses bacon (not guancisle) and not an egg sauce but more like a gricia with an egg yolk on top and not pecorino.
google avatar

Selena M.

Yelp
Love their pasta, service is always quick and they are always so friendly and kind. It's also nicely decorated. I feel like I'm in an nyc restaurant here. The drinks are always great. I would recommend trying this place. It's a hidden treasure.

Yelp
New restaurant in Ironbound!! Final new cuisine in town rather than more of the same. Italian food is different for the area. Ambiance if restaurant made me feel like I was in a SoHo restaurant in NYC.. moody lighting and chill loungey music. Decor is modern. Mixed material walls.... Cool slick leather booth seating... Mid century ceiling lamps. We need more of this in Ironbound. We ordered chicken piccata with mash potatoes and the spicy vodka cavatelli; dessert tiramisu. Chicken piccata was very flavorful and bright. Mashed potatoes needed more butter or cream.. It was missing a bit of each. Spicy vodka cavatelli was superb.. the sauce made the dish and the pasta tasted freshly made. Highlight of the whole meal was the tiramisu; must order it again. Truly a perfect ending of a great dinner. Service was perfect. Very attentive and friendly. One thing to change is.. they served olives instead of bread.. I wished the olives didn't have pits; it was kind of awkward spitting out a pit . Not cute if you're out with a hot date. Lol they were tasty though.

Joao P.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots here in the Newark. The Carbonara is one of my favorite dishes here in the city of Newark. The drink menu is also super creative and tasty. The GM and the ownership are extremely wonderful people. I 100% recommend this spot for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
This restaurant is stunning and has the food to match. The inside of this restaurant is great. Amazing textures, finishes and music give it a great vibe and ambiance. Service was awesome. We were greeted with smiles and taken great care of. Food was really outstanding. Highly recommend five corners and can't wait to go back. 5 Stars for 5 Corners!!

Tara T.

Yelp
Highly recommend checking out Five Corners! This dinner was to celebrate my friend closing on a home. I choose Five Corners because I knew it would give him some decor inspo for his new home, the restaurant is absolutely beautiful! My friend is pescatarian, so we shared the arancini, shrimp & garlic, Porcini Mushroom Tagliatelle and Broccolini. With the exception of the tagliatelle, all were 10/10! The tagliatelle wasn't as fresh and flavorful as the other dishes to us. But this definitely didn't dissuade me from wanting to return to Five Corners to try other entrees. I was impressed with the presentation of our food and drinks and the attentive service we received. The complimentary focaccia bread and marinated olives were also a nice touch.
google avatar

Bryan B.

Yelp
Went to Five Corners for Sunday brunch. The burger was so flavorful, smoky and tender. The spicy Italian sausage was cool take on sausage and peppers by adding a fried egg and bread for dipping in the read sauce. The carbonara was rich & cheesy and the egg yolk served on top when mixed into the pasta helped to form a creamy, cheesy sauce. Oh...and bottomless mimosas! The decor is modern yet inviting. I can't wait to come back to taste the full menu.

Yelp
Nice location, friendly service, limited menu and currently working on obtaining liquor license as of October 2023. Clean simple and modern ambiance. Nice for date night.

Yelp
Want to feel like you're on the Upper West Side in Newark? Boy is this the place for you! Attentive service, beautiful and delicious food. There are 6 corners at this intersection, I counted.

Yelp
This restaurant is gorgeous, the service was amazing (they were attentive and accommodating to all dietary restrictions), and the food! Well, if you like pasta, you'll love this place. Try it. You won't regret you did.

Yelp
This is my second time at Five Corners and I can't stress what a great addition this restaurant is to the Ironbound. To begin, the service was wonderful with a very attentive staff that is always available. The ambience is modern but with a touch of mid century, which provides us with a clean and hip environment for dining. I've experienced both dinner and brunch, and each menu is diverse and has unique offerings. Of course the home made bread and pasta will always be such wonderful touches. The desserts are to die for, and are all made from scratch. Will come back many more times!

J R.

Yelp
Really fabulous little place in the old Ironbound neighborhood in Newark. Just stumbled across it. Food was fabulous. Staff was wonderful. Atmosphere was terrific. Just a great meal all the way around.

Yelp
We're from out of town and found this looking for a high rated restaurant. It did not disappoint! Excellent food and service,

Yelp
Was staying overnite near Newark airport and tried Five Corners due to high rating. We were not disappointed. Excellent service and all four of us loved our meals. Great restaurant.

Yelp
We were stranded in Newark due to weather and decided to venture out: this place was exactly what we needed. Only 8 minutes from the airport, Five Corners brought their A game. We had the calamari, the burrata, the lemon shrimp tagliatelle, and the spaghetti bolognese. All were incredibly well seasoned and prepared. Big thumbs up for the service and the ambiance as well. Please check them out.

Yelp
Slightly pretentious. Hostess is a bit slack. But the rest of staff and food/drinks were delicious! Very nice ambiance.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant Five Corners Ristorante By a fluke as we had to return our rental car back . Amazingly was surprised with food.. was not sure when we drove up it looked too quite but took our chances and went in. We were greeted by a very nice gentleman!!! We had spaghetti bolognese, and vodka sauce with tagaatella pasta. Borge selection were excellent!! Finished our meal with panacotta with berry compote.. excellent!!! Nut chocolate brown with chocolate n and ice cream was so sweet!! Didn't enjoy it. Overall very good with live entertainment!!

Thomas K.

Yelp
OMG! Where do I even start? Looking for an AMAZING place to eat in Newark? The food is absolutely delicious, and is reasonably priced. I had the chicken pesto pasta and it was to die for. The service was super attentive and they were happy to answer any questions we had about the menu. We had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners who was bar tending and he was super nice. The environment of the restaurant is super nice and intimate. It is super nice with a setting that looks good both when there is light and darkness. Stop your search for a place to eat, eat at five corners! I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
A unique experience in the ironbound. For a neighborhood full of diverse food from South America and Spain and Portugal, this restaurant was a welcome Italian addition. This is not your red sauce, huge portions joint - for that you gotta go elsewhere (google red sauce Italian or if you're lazy, go to olive garden for the ridiculous portions). The ambiance is impeccable, minimalist decor with sleek leather booths and tables. The bar serves strong drinks and is fully stocked. Here, you can a great bottle of wine (TIP: go ahead and get the Montepulciano wine and impress your date). Get some tender octopus, the bresaola, and some calamari. You can't go wrong with experimentation here - everything is top notch quality. The spicy vodka Cavatelli gives Carbone a run for its money. The emphasis here is quality over quantity - which tells you everything you need to know when ordering here. Just as their related Cafe (Sihana) revolutionized the café scene in the Ironbound, Five Corners Ristorante will surely revolutionize the restaurant scene in the Ironbound. If I were other restaurants in the Ironbound and elsewhere, I would take notice of the quality, service and ambiance of this ristorante. 5 stars.
